You will need 9, 4-Patch blocks

Cut 36 squares - 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"

Sew together to form 4-patch blocks

Lay them out and like color placement.

Cut 6 Dark - 4 1/2" x 1 1/2"

Sew into 3 Rows

Cut 4 - 2 1/2"x 1 1/2"

Cut 6 - 2 1/2"x 4 1/2

Sew into 2 Rows

Sew all Rows together to form center of quilt

Cut 2 Dark - 2 1/2" x 16 1/2"

Cut 2 Red - 2 1/2 x 16 1/2"

Sew to the sides

Cut 2 Red - 2 1/2" x 22 1/2

Sew to the top and bottom

Cut binding 88" x 2 1/4"

I'm going to TRY and do machine quilting on this, it's gong to be my TRY !

Hamburger Pie, Quilt Ladies Kitchen

To me this dish is home and I'm in need of some comfort food today.
Long ago it would have been made with homemade mashed potatoes on top.
But, not anymore, I'm trying to get my waist back

Hamburger Pie
1 1/2 lb. Lean Hamburger,
1 medium onion, chopped
Brown, Cook and ground, drain any fat off.

Add
1 can tomato soup,
1 can whole kernel corn, drained
1 can french green beans, drained

Mix well, add
2 teaspoons garlic powder,
1 teaspoon chili powder
Salt and Pepper

Spray with vegetable oil, I use a round 9" baking dish.

Top with 10 ground up saltine crackers, I use wheat crackers.
Or if you like top with mashed pototoes !

Bake for 30 minutes at 350 F

Served with corn bread and fresh peaches.

Heart Quilt with Applique

Don't you love it when love is in the air?

Thinking about someone that's special. Remembering, someone from long ago or moments from your past with someone, who you are planning on spending this Valentines with.

I Love, Love

I love applique and I spent many a day on a bleacher or in the car waiting for the boys to finish a practice appliqueing. This is one for the first, hand appliqued and hand quilted ones.

Hearts are the first things I learned to applique.

Didn't Think It Could Get Better

Our last trip to Florida was a true vacation, with lots of day trips,
eating out and shopping.

One day was the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, FL - their site

This is one of the many room Mr Ringling purchased the walls and ceilings.

The First thing that I saw was this fireplace, I just stood there for quite a bit and then

turning to my right, and it got even better.
Unbelievable

One of the ceiling moldings ! In this same room.

I will never think of crown molding the same again. What a wonderful day !

Pineapple UpSide Down Quilt Ladies Kitchen

Quick, Make and Bake dessert.

Pineapple Upside Down Cake

1 can crushed Pineapple, juice drained.

10-12 marchino cherries, cut in half, no juice

In a 9 inch round cake pan, spray with vegetable spray.

Spread pineapple and cherries in the bottom of the pan.

1 box of Yellow cake mix, small box. 9 oz.
Make and bake as shown on box.

Let cool for 5 minutes and turn upside down.

Served here with vanilla ice cream.

Bold Quilt Colors Quilts Around my House

This is my First try with the bold colors of solids.

And the first time I understood what I call "Quilting for Meaning".

This is a table runner, simple colors work, but what makes it is the quilting.
Measures about 25 " x 40"

It's machine pieced and

hand quilted with very simple hearts. I used a red colored thread
and a thin batting that is just enough to hold the stitches.

If, I was to quilt this today, it would have much more hand quilting, and with that would probably loose the simple feel it has..

Super Bowl Pizza Quilt Ladies Kitchen

Grilled Pizza

This is so fun and easy to serve

2 packages of Pizza Crust mix I use our store brand (1 package per pizza)

Make as directed on package.

Spread out each crush on a grill cookie sheet. sprayed with vegetable oil.

Cook on grill at 350 for 10 minutes NO TOPPINGS on.
Do this early, if you do it early, cool, cover, put in frig, pull out when ready to use.

Time to eat, Add you favorite toppings,
if guests, chop things up and let them add.

Put back on hot grill 350- 400 F and cook for about 15-20 minutes , watch and get the cheese just right.

Cut and serve, the crust is wonderful !

Chicken Enchiladas

I usually make this dish first thing in the morning, don't bake, cover put in Frig. Pull out and bake

2 Cups Cooked Chicken

1 8 oz. Cream Cheese softened

1 Cup 8oz. Sour Cream

1 Cup Salsa, (I use hot) use what you like

8 Flour Tortillas 8inches

2 Cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese

1 Can 2.5 Sliced Black Olives drained

Cut up Tomatoes and Shredded Lettuce

Combine Chicken and Cream Cheese in a bowl

Spoon ¼ Cup of mixture into the center of each tortillas

Lay Seam down in a greased 9” x 13” pan

Mix Sour Cream, salsa and spread over the top of the tortillas

Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes uncovered

Sprinkle with Cheese and Olives

Bake for 10-15 minutes more

Serve with Lettuce and Tomatoes

4 Servings with Chips and Salsa

This is one of our favorite for a football Sunday. This year it's just us and FOOD ! and I'm excited about that !

Onion Tart

1 Large Onion, thinly sliced
8 Slices bacon, chopped ( I used 4 slices)
1 ready-to-use refrigerated pie crust, use one crust
1 pkg, (8oz) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened ( I used about 5-6 oz's)
1/4 cup sour cream (used greek yogurt)
1/2 cup shredded swiss cheese ( Optional, I don't add)

.COOK onions and bacon in skillet for 10-12 minutes, until onions are tender, stir as they cook
HEAT oven 400 F. unroll pie crust on baking sheet, mix cream cheese and sour cream. Spread on crust. Top with onion mixture. Leave a 2" border. Add cheese to top, (optional)
Fold over edge, leaving the center open, fold crust as needed
BAKE for 12-15 minutes - Cool a bit.

Ginger Cookies and Book Find

I'm always looking for old books and I happened upon this one at Goodwill.
It takes you through each holiday, with all the information needed for any good housewife, in 1960.

From Sunday evening dinner, children parties, showers and more.

Table settings and recipes too.

From page 290
Christmas Ginger Stars

2 1/2 Cups Flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ginger
1 cup molasses
1/2 cup shortening (I used butter)

Mix all ingredients, mix well.

In the recipe they rolled them out and used cookie cutters, I just rolled them into rolls about quarter size, rolled in white sugar, placed on ungreased sheet, Bake at 350 F for 8-10 minutes. Remove from cookie sheet and cool. As I made them, I had just over 3 dozen cookies.

My First Quilt Quilts Around my House

This is my first quilt

In the early 80's we moved to Burlington, Iowa, it's in the southeastern corner of the state on the Mississippi River and yes, I learned how to spell Mississippi.

I had done some blocks, some pillows and then I saw in the paper a class being hosted by the local quilt group. I remember it being expensive and how I agonized over it for days. but, finally signed up.

The teacher was "Liz Porter" at the time she worked for one of the magazines, Better Homes maybe, but is was a wonderful day and I learned so much.

It was a color class which meant nothing to me at the time, looking at the quilt today I didn't get the whole idea. Liz brought letters to add to each quilt to identify, I used my initials.

Hand quilting was so relaxing to me, I had no frame, just a dining room table, pinned it very well and quilted. I checked out library books on how to do everything. The quality of books we have now is crazy different from then.

I was approached to join the quilt group after the class. I think I was a rarity in the group a "new" member. I remember being laughed at when they saw my round corners on the quilt. I love these corners.This is my quilt, I curl up under it daily, it's washed all the time and it's just over 25 years old. It's never looked better to me.

Well, I FINALLY did it

After months of looking, comparing and reading most of the manuals on line.

I made a purchase.

I was surprise to see a manual in print, but thank goodness I have it.

After threading the machine, which took me a bit. My first stitches.

The plan was to drop the feed dogs and quilt,

Fish Taco's Quilt Ladies Kitchen

When Husband brings home a recipe from work.....

Well, after he talked it up, way too much. I tried it.

Fish Taco's

1/2 Cup Greek Yogurt

1/2 cup light Mayonnaise

1/4 cup chopped Fresh cilantro

1 oz package of taco seasoning mix

1 pound Tilapia, or other firm fish cut in chucks

2 Tbs. olive oil

2 Tbs. of lemon juice, bottle or fresh

1 package whole grain taco shells.

Mix together, sour cream, mayonnaise, cilantro and 1 1/2 tablespoons of the seasoning in a small bowl.

Combine tilapia, olive oil, lemon juice and rest of seasoning mix,

Coat fish with seasoning

Cook, stir over medium heat for 4 to 5 minutes per side. or until fish flakes with fork.

Fill taco shells with fish mixture,

Top with, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream mixture

Or as I like it. Salad, chips and fish.

Log Cabin Free Pattern #1

For the next few month's I'm going to be sharing a Log Cabin Quilt that I started over the New Years weekend. This is my way of saying, "Thank you to you all !"
2011 was a year of unbelievable growth for my little company, at

So, this is my way of saying again,
"Thank you for helping me make
my Dream a Reality."

I've been collecting fabric's over the past bit, picking up things that I just like.

I've been on a bit on over drive about things lately, so I decided to cut strips and just start.

Cut a random number of strips 1 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" wide

Sewed like width together and then cut them into strips, both 1 1/2" wide and 2 1/2 " wide.

Of course, I had to turn them into patterns after doing 3 or 4. So, here I go.

I'll be sharing them ! Every couple of weeks.

Log Cabin Fun each block measures 10" x 10"

for the entire set of 16

Cut 2 Pink – 2 ½” x 2 ½”

Cut 2 White – 2 ½” x 2 ½”

Make center 4 -patch

Cut 2 Blue – 4 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to the top and bottom

Cut 2 Yellow – 6 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to the sides

Cut 7Pink – 2 ½” x 1 ½”

Cut 7 Gray – 2 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew as shown, top and bottom

Add sides

Cut 2 Blue – 8 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to the top and bottom

Cut 2 Blue 10 ½” x 1 ½”

Sew to the sides.

Chili Recipe Quilt Ladies Kitchen

I'm always looking for wonderful store's and this is one.

If you've heard of Penzey's Spices you will understand my thrill be see they have a retail store in
Sarasota, FL at 1516 Main Street.
Here is their website and their catalog is GREAT ! Recipes and all kinds of ideas.

I always ask to take photo's inside any one's store, after phone calls, they said, "Sure" and that it was the first time any one had asked.

I had a ball going through all the spices and the ladies helping answer all my questions.

Back home is Nebraska with my purchases, I tried my Chili Spice first, on my tradition chili.

1 Medium Onion
1 lb. Lean Hamburger
2 Gloves of Garlic, sliced thin
1/2 Medium Green Pepper

Brown hamburger and cook all above, drain any fat from the pan.

Add 1, 46 oz. of V-8 Spicy Hot
1 Can 15oz. Chili Style Beans (2 cans if you like)
2 tablespoons Chili Powder, (Or to taste, we like it hot here!)
1 tablespoon Ground Cumin
Salt and Pepper to taste
Simmer for at least 20 minutes,
I do this in the morning, let it cool, refrigerate and re-heat at meal time.

Serving for 4 with bread and salad.
