Inch by inch, row by row. We laid a grid out over the whole city. Each square was inspected by our volunteers. Any item found, whether or not it appeared noteworthy, was extracted and cataloged for future study. They worked with their fingers and sometimes toothbrushes, no hard or sharp tools for fear of accidentally destroying something desirable. Examining the findings will take years. We may not live to learn exactly what it is we found.

I want to tell you about the Lugbara sky-father. The Lugbara are people, mostly subsistence farmers, who live around the upper reaches of the White Nile in Uganda and the DRC. They have a sky god like everyone else (see also: Zeus, Yahweh, et. al.), and he goes by Adroa. But he’s only half the story. He’s actually only half a guy. He’s white and short and lives in the sky and created everything and is pretty much completely removed from earthly things entirely. His other half goes by Adro. Adro is black and tall and hops around the watery parts in and around the Albert Nile causing a ruckus for everyone. (He really hops: each half is half a man, split vertically so each has one leg and one arm.)

Now, Uganda has wildlife reserves just like its East African neighbors in Kenya, Tanzania, &c. Trouble is that Uganda has has more than its share of trouble in the past couple decades with social and state turmoil. As such, the preserves are not quite as well policed as those in Kenya that benefit from stability and more safari tourists.

The modern day Lugbara and their fellow Ugandans have to handle the lions and elephants and antelope and whatever other large majestic beasts roam the parks that directly abut their spread. They have no truck for messing around with conservation, so they hunt and eat the animals who live in the parks. The other option, I guess, is watching the lions eat their children and/or starving while they wait for the Ugandan economy to modernize to the point that they they can get Stop n Plop.

To get the bushmeat (What a silly term! Is it bushmeat when the Motor City Madman crossbows an elk?), they of course have to get into the really wild places. You’d think that gorillas and leopards would be enough danger, but they also have to look out for the adroanzi. These tricky dudes are Adro’s kids, and remember, Adro is the bad half. They follow behind you in the forest. That feeling that you get that makes you look behind you to see if someone’s there? That’s them. At least in Uganda it is. But oops, if you turn around they eat you. It’s even tougher out there than you thought.

Mount Taurus is modernized from Bull Hill, so called because a wild bull was once chased by the indignant inhabitants across to the other mountain, where he fell and broke his neck. This one adventure named two mountains, but the moderns have not yet applied the Latinized name for a broken neck to the farther hill. … The Storm King rises fifteen hundred and twenty-nine feet high, and Mount Taurus fifteen hundred and eighty-six feet high, certainly most grand portals for the gate of the Highlands. There are frequent caves in these mountain-sides, and in one of them Captain Kidd is said to have buried his treasures,–a habit he had at a good many places, judging from tradition.1

Saturday, August 11, 2012. Ten friends old and new took for the summit. Two of the oldest friends (paradoxically the most modern of the blokes present) sang an improvised dithyramb at the peak. The final few minutes are missing from the recording. The bull wanted his share, perhaps.

S01E12 "Necessary Ghosts"

(In which our intrepid hero attempts to join the ranks of amateur paranormal investigators and Internet conspiracy theorists, with predictably mixed results.)

Check out the web site the Rev. Fr. Gary P. Dudley, B.S., M.A. created a website to promote his book, The Legend of Dudley Town. Note the questionable use of ellipses, the excessive CAPS LOCK, the stuck in 1998 design. All this from a man so many times decorated by authorities that one can barely find his name amidst the honorifics? Something doesn’t add up.

He’s trying to sell us on his book, purported to be a refutation of the ghost stories surrounding Connecticut’s very own ghost town: Dudley Town, in Cornwall, deep in the heart of CT’s predominantly rural Quiet Corner. Presumably alerted to the legend by his sharing a name with the town and its accursed founders, Dudley travelled all the way from Texas to get his debunk on. You can read about the curse and why it’s all a bunch of codswallop at the site. He does a reasonably good job of knocking down the origin myth, but his explanation of the subsequent hauntings and the constant shroud of secrecy leaves something to be desired in my mind.

I have more questions, and my own theories as to the truth of Dudley Town. Assuming the town’s connections to the historic Dudleys are not strong enough to pass a curse, couldn’t the curse exist in some other form around the town? Who says the official story has to be the real cause of the supernatural happenings around town? Why does Dudley so glibly categorize the stories of madness, disappearance, and suicide as normal? Why the dogged insistence on the part of the land’s current owners to keep a worthless old ruin secret and off-limits to he public? What are they be hiding?

And why the constant mention of owls on Dudley’s site? Why are the only images owls?

Clearly, the Rev. Fr. is some sort of necromancer or wizard. Owls often choose to live and work with practicioners of the dark arts, and sometimes they are pressed into service as demonic familiars. It is also said that owls are the only creatures that can live in haunted places. One can only become aquatinted with the hidden world of magick by carefully following cryptic clues left behind by forebears. Dudley wants to protect his secrets from the laity, but he can’t resist leaving a trail for potential initiates.

He is in league with the diabolical current owners (nameless, faceless: yes; ageless, formless, soulless: could be!) to keep the curious out of Dudley Town to hide some secret. The supposed curse on the Dudley family is a red herring meant to divert attention away from Gary’s true work in the town. There is a presence in Dudley Town that is not of this world. Perhaps Dudley, et al. are protecting a group of unfortunate souls trapped between the world. Perhaps they are experimenting with contacting creatures from beyond (demons, the dead, the undead, etc.). Perhaps there’s an inter-dimensional portal (or “hellmouth”) patrolled tirelessly by a teenage vampire slayer and her goofy friends.

The trouble is, CT’s brave population of goth teens are kept from researching the area under penalty of arrest. Uh oh. Are the local police in on it too? How high up does this go?? I may have said too much already. I there’s no podcast next week, you’ll know why! Tell my wife and child I love them! Seek the Truth!!

We can watch as they stalk the poor weakened riff, separate it from the herd and slay it. Even now you can see carcasses dotting the landscape of songs that never reached maturity, their rhythmic entrails torn across the plains by scavenging hyenas. Perhaps, if we’re lucky, we’ll witness their grotesque and violent mating ritual. The terrible spectacle of young men aspiring to a bold and probably misguided notion of beauty.

"NATO held its first nuclear exercise in June 1955. In this so-called Operation Carte Blanche, the planes of eleven NATO members simulated the use of nuclear weapons in the area between Hamburg and Munich. When it was over, the referees estimated that 1,700,000 Germans had been killed and 3,500,000 wounded.“1

There’s something oddly quaint about the fear of nuclear holocaust that pervaded the second half of the last century. I was born during the Reagan administrastion and can’t really remember the fall of the Berlin Wall, so the threat of Mutually Assured Destruction never weighed heavily on my mind. For those who lived through the Cold War it seems as though it was at least as scary as the modern threat of terrorism. The two kinds of senseless destruction feel different, though.

The fear of nuclear war only comes up nowadays during the ramp up to another war in Asia, and even then it’s more of a diplomatic gambit than a thing that bears down on the culture. We seem to have lost some of that desparation that the threat of nuclear winter seemed have on people. The thought of the total destruction of the species made some people take things super seriously, and probably for good reason.

Now our fears are of things that are completely random and pointless, things like like terrorist attacks and climate change powered natural disasters. They lack the sense of grandeur that is bundled with the fear of the end of civilization. Now it seems that civilization won’t end with a dramatic bang, but rather a gradual weakening of compassion and empathy until it’s just not worth it to try anymore. I wonder if that difference has informed the feeling of insouciance I often get from my generation. We’re no afraid of Soviets anymore; we’re afraid of humans.

Fearless.

Making big, serious, life-changing decisions is emotionally taxing. Making what you know to be the right choice with another person, a partner or friend or spouse, feels wonderful. Speaking that definitive “yes” and watching your companion light up with agreement. It’s grand.

This is the high point of the rollercoaster. Then the two of you plunge into despair at the prospect of actually having to go through with the life change. Couldn’t everything just stay exactly the same forever? Well hold on, because next comes the rush of actually taking the first steps. Then the fear that you’ve made a terrible mistake. Then the high of seeing the thing come to fruition. Then down, up, down, up forever because the effects of our biggest decisions reverberate through our entire lives. We can always wonder what our lives would be like if we went the other way.

But damn, what a feeling it is. And how much sweeter it is with someone to share it.

PROGRAMMING NOTE: Curious that the one I do the most singing on comes out days after I get my jaw wired shut. I fractured my jaw and my arm in the same dumb bicycle accident. Typing with one hand is not my thing, so don’t expect a long esoteric piece of writing this time around.

I should have enough of a backlog of tapes in the archive (read: box of tapes in the basement) to maintain the every-two-weeks pace until I can return to recording new material. Don’t be alarmed if some of them come out without announcements. It’s just because I can’t talk. Maybe I should try spitting through the wire.
