Wood Bead Challenge Accepted!

I am really good at accepting all of the challenges I throw my own way. 😂

This one involves large wood macramé beads that I have in my stash and copious amounts of origami paper that has been floating around my "collections" for probably 25-30 years. Which is ridiculous, really. I have a thing for pretty papers. In addition to origami paper (my career as a professional paper folder lasted an afternoon), I also have tons of scrapbook paper (when I have never scrapbooked a day in my life). It's time to use up some of these fire hazards, as my husband refers to all paper and/or cardboard.

I selected seven sheets of this beautiful paper and sliced it into thin strips with my paper cutter. Believe it or not... and I can't believe I am admitting this... my arm was sore the next day. Long story short: I highly recommend the paper-cutting exercise regime for getting your guns in fighting shape. 💪

It turns out that seven small pieces of origami paper sliced up is a hell of a lot of sliced up origami paper. More than I needed for this little project, so I'll have to get creative with the remainder. (Did I just give myself another challenge? 👀)

These wood macramé beads measure 1 3/4" in length, so I was thinking that they'd make a great focal bead or possibly earrings. My original thought was that I'd sell them just as beads for other jewelry makers to play around with, but after consulting my OG jewelry buddy, Lorelei, I decided that I wanted to embellish them a bit more.

This (above) is what they looked like before I embellished them. I adhered the paper strips and then applied several layers of UV/water resistant sealant. You'll have to wait for part two to see what I ended up doing to them. I may have gone too far, as I am wont to do. Then again... I do enjoy going too far.

What Do You Do With a Drunken Sailor?... OR... Wood Earrings Challenge Accepted!

Yeah, there's no drunken sailor... but I made you look! (That song has been stuck in my head for days, so now it's stuck in yours. You're welcome.)

I have 4 different jewelry projects going on at once. When I have a new idea I drop everything to make it. It's a problem. It drives me crazy. It's who I am. This project, however, is one that I COMPLETED!

I have a big old pile of these (above) wood earring blanks, so I've created a challenge for myself: See how many completely different styles of earrings I can create using the same wooden blanks. I accept my own challenge!

For this set of 6 earrings I started by staining the backs a nice warm color. I don't want to mask the fact that these earrings are wood, I want to highlight it.

Once again I am using monoprints that I made several years ago. I have a huge stack of beautiful prints that do such a great job of providing pops of color so why not plaster them on EVERYTHING?

I've had the idea to use pure copper foil as an overlay for a while and this seemed like the perfect project to try it out. I am over the moon with the results. 😍

Once the foil was in place I added some depth and more color with colored pencils and painted the edges. 4 coats of satin polyurethane sealed the deal. Literally.

For years I have made all my earwires from sterling silver wire but with the outrageous cost of silver these days I am putting a hold on my silver purchases. I simply cannot justify that expense and there's no way I'm passing that cost on to customers. Especially when I can make awesome things for a FRACTION of the cost without sacrificing one damn bit of artistic wowness (new word alert!). So, I made these earwires from silver plated, nickel free wire and blinged them up with a cute little metal enameled bead.

The result is a beautiful batch of lightweight, colorful earrings! I'm thrilled with the copper and will definitely be trying this technique on other things. My creative juices are FLOWING. I was going to put them in my online shop (this one) but ran into a few snags that I just don't have the bandwidth to deal with right now. It's been a while since I paid any attention to my shop and in the meantime they have changed a few things so I need to relearn how to list things and tweak a few settings. UGH. I hate technology. Gadget and Tool Favorites - Mini Desktop Vacuum Edition

Hello, my name is Nancy and I am a gadget and tool freak. Anything that makes a job easier while also looking adorable is right up my cluttered alley. From time to time I will be sharing some of my favorite tools and this week is one of my newest discoveries - the mini desktop vacuum.

This is the tool I never knew I needed and now I can't imagine functioning without it. It is perfect for quickly sucking up any dust or debris in seconds and making your work space clean and ready for some kick-ass creating. It's more powerful than I expected it to be and it holds a charge (it comes with a

USB charging cable) for a very long time.

Elevated Popsicle Stick Bracelets

My friend Jen recently told me about a t-shirt purchase she made. She kept referring to the shirts as "elevated t-shirts." What the hell is an elevated t-shirt? I thought it must be some new brand I'm completely ignorant of, or a new style that, again, I am completely ignorant of. When I finally asked her it turned out to be nothing more than a regular t-shirt that had been altered for a more fitted shape. Is this a new way of speaking? Is this how all the kids are describing things these days? Am I now at the age where I am easily confounded by new language usage? Am I now Grampa from the Simpsons?

Fraid so.

The only reason I tell that story is because when I first attempted to make some popsicle stick bracelets I quickly realized that they would be too flimsy for real-world wear. It's a great craft to do with kids and the resulting bracelet is great...for kids. I knew that if I wanted them to be functional for hardcore jewelry rough riders I'd have to beef them up. I'd have to ELEVATE them. So here we are with the Elevated Popsicle Stick Bracelets.

This is my first project in my new era of using what supplies I already have (see my last post). I have popsicle sticks (these are actually called craft sticks - much wider and much longer than regular popsicle sticks) and I have piles of monoprints (see the first photo) that I obsessively made several years ago. I've used my prints to make earrings, which I love, so it seemed only logical to make some bracelets as well.

Without boring you too much with the details on how to actually form these bracelets just know that it involves boiling and soaking the sticks in water and gently bending them into shape, putting them into a form, such as a glass, and letting them dry completely. The result of all that is a pretty flimsy, bendy bracelet situation. So I glued two together. Problem solved.

Staining and polyurethaning the inside gives them a nice smooth feel and, say it with me.... an ELEVATED look. Fancy, you might say.

My favorite part of this entire project is selecting the areas of my prints to cut out and adhere to the bracelets. It's amazing how different a print looks when viewed in snippets. I used an archival UV resistant paper glue followed by many layers of polyurethane. These bracelets are water resistant, but not waterproof. No wearing in the pool.

I have, of course, over simplified the description of the construction of these bracelets. Because I have, of course, made the construction of these bracelets ridiculously complicated and labor intensive. I probably don't need to wood-fill and sand and sand and sand and paint and layer and layer and agonize over every aspect... but I do and I will. And I'm not done yet because I'm not in love with the way the ends overlap and how that looks. So stayed tuned for part 2 and let's see if I improve things or end up overworking them into oblivion. It could go either way. 😑

Dusting Off the Old Blog

It only took me 30 minutes to figure out how to sign into this blog. Not too shabby considering it's been 9(!) years since I last wrote. I started this blog 18 years ago which is a thought that completely astounds me. What a different place this internet thingy was back then. I often think it was a better place. Kinder. Safer. Smaller. It was easier to be seen. Easier to feel like you were part of a community. The jewelry making community, that is. Etsy was fairly new and suddenly it felt like everyone and their neighbor was getting in touch with their creative sides and trying to make a go of being an "artist." I had been working as an artist for a while at that time and the world of online promotion was a whole new animal that had to be tamed if I wanted to succeed. I was fairly computer illiterate then and not much has changed. At least I'm consistent. So here I am, dusting off the old blog, wondering if anyone still reads these things while not really caring too much if they do. I miss writing and talking about my creative process so even if I'm writing into the abyss... that's a-okay with me.

As the new year gets underway, I, like so many others, wonder what direction I'm heading in creatively. If you know me or have followed my business, Round Rabbit, over the years you may know I'm a bit all over the place when it comes to my work. I'm a dabbler and I want to do and make EVERYTHING. I want to learn every medium, change my mind every other day, work really hard on something until I master it and then abandon it for a few years until something random reminds of it and I pull it back into view. Some may find that entertaining but it drives me insane. I've always been very hard on myself for lacking focus and stick-to-itiveness. And then I'm hard on myself for being hard on myself. Good lord, it's all so exhausting! So my plan for this year is simple: Do what I want. My only requirements are to be consistent and to USE WHAT I ALREADY HAVE.

What exactly does that mean? As a serial accumulator I have a lot of stuff. I have art supplies out the ying-yang. I have beads and beautiful papers, paints and polished gemstones, fabrics, fibers and yarns, books upon books filled with inspiration and a studio in which to do my work. It's an embarrassment of riches, in all honesty, even though I am a person of modest means. Over my life I have accumulated more than I have used and I have kept it. All of it.

My goals are to use what I have. The only things I am allowed to purchase are tools and things such as adhesives, flux, tape, thread, polyurethane... things that run out and are necessary to create something new. Some things will be jewelry or beads (yes, if you are someone who has asked me if I will ever make beads again, I will. They won't be ceramic at this time, but never say never.), some things will be sewn or woven... whatever I feel like doing, I will do it. Follow my journey, if you like, as I attempt to use what I have to make beautiful things. I hope to write at least once a week with pictures and thoughts about my creations. 😊

Hello Everyone!

I've been a busy little rabbit and doing something I haven't done in quite a while. Sewing! Way back in the days of old (we're talking 20+ years ago) I was an avid and prolific sewist. I made a great deal of my own clothing and was especially fond of quilting. As I became more interested in other crafts my sewing took a back seat. It's been about 9 years since I last sat down to sew anything more than a repair here and there. Last month an Instagram friend hosted a sew-a-long and it inspired me to get out the old machine and see if I remembered how to do anything. Turns out it's a bit like riding a bike. It all came back to me and I was instantly reminded why I loved to sew all those years ago. So I made a dress and a few skirts and then I looked at my fabric scraps and thought, "I should really do something with them!"

I am determined NOT to rebuild a fabric stash. I say rebuild because I recently unloaded boxes and boxes of fabric (enough to open a shop, for real) that I had hoarded for years. These days I like to limit my hoarding to yarn so I really don't want to accumulate any fabric. So I started making some fun little items that allow me to use up scraps and bits and make me incredibly happy in the process.

These (and in the first photo at the top) are Crazy Quilted Cuffs! Not only do these snazzy cuffs use up little bits of fabric but I've used scraps of yarn as embellishment as well.

The wedge style shown here can be sized to any measurement. I have not attached the second part of the pearl snap so all you have to do is tell me your wrist size and I can make it fit you.

The other fun, scrappy item I've been making is these handy quilted needle keepers. What a great way to store all kinds of needles and to keep them in one place!

As you can see, my love of color doesn't end with my ceramic work. More color! More color!

And lastly, there are three of my ceramic and needle felted wool pin cushions available in the shop. I am working on some new pieces soon, so more colors to come!

Having a blast making new things!

Hello one and all! It's been a little while since I made my announcement that I would no longer be making beads and jewelry components. Since then I've had many people asking just what I am going to be making. Well, the answer is simple: Whatever strikes my little fancy!

Fist of all, I got some sassy new business cards.

And I've been knitting away on some swatches to use as photo backgrounds for my buttons. Niffy idea, right?

And speaking of buttons, I have just placed in the shop (the first of many-to-come) what I am calling Glazed To Order Buttons. The idea is that you can choose as many or as few as you want, in the colors you want and they will be glazed to order. The photo above shows one design that is available now.

And this is another design that is available. There will be many more to come as I will be adding them weekly. They can be found in the shop HERE.

I've also made new packaging for my buttons and I'm really pleased with it! (The bunny buttons are in the SHOP.)

Today I just unveiled my new porcelain and wood shawl pins. I make every inch of them myself, including cutting, staining and waxing the birch dowels. I couldn't be happier with the way they came out. Six of them have been listed in the SHOP and the rest will go in on Monday of next week. They also make great hair sticks!

Another super fun thing that I am really excited about are my new PINCUSHIONS!! How cute is this?! They are hand-built from porcelain and I needle felt the cushions from wool. I've had this idea for a while and it's really rewarding to see them coming to life.

Here is another version. I have a few more made as well and they will all be going in the shop on Monday.

And finally, I am still making my own jewelry and have been able to get some new pairs of earrings in the shop. I haven't made the style above in quite a while. It's nice to see them again.

It has been a true joy to be working in my studio these days and I feel like I made the best possible choice in the direction my work will take. Big Round Rabbit news!

There are some big changes in store for Round Rabbit. As of right now I will no longer be making art beads and jewelry components. The bottom line is that I am burned out. I am uninspired. I am tired of beads and components. My heart is not in the jewelry world right now. So in an effort to revive my muse and help me to enjoy my job I am making some changes.

First to go is all the beads and components. Right now in the shop I have marked down all of them and have added quite a few. As I clean out my studio and prepare to move (new house, new studio...soon!) I will occasionally be listing more bargain beads and components but for now this is what I have. If you see something you like I recommend that you get it because I will not be making any of it again.

What will I be making? Lots of other things!! I have big plans for many things, some of them aimed at the fiber world. As some of you know for several years my love of all things wool, yarn and knitting has occupied my heart and time. So I will be expanding my button production (think glazed-to-order) and making some knitting and spinning related products. I am also itching to make some functional pottery once again. It has been years since I have made anything bigger than a quarter and that needs to change. There will be cups and mugs and shot glasses in the future. There will be fun things like coasters and magnets and small pots for succulents. Lots and lots of things. And guess what? I am going to ENJOY making them!

What will stay? My finished jewelry. I have no plans to stop making beads and components for my own use and I look forward to getting back into more jewelry design, which is where I started in the first place.

Thank you, thank you to those of you who have stuck with me all these years! Some of you have been purchasing beads from me from the very first moment I started making them and proceeded to purchase from me pretty much every single update. That is amazing and I can't thank you enough. I hope I can continue to make things that will inspire and bring joy not only for myself but for all of you as well. :)

Happy Spring everyone! I have some lovely springy inspired pieces for this week's update!

First up shown above about some stoneware butterfly pendants. They are glazed in earthy, rustic glazes on a brown stoneware clay body.

I'm a bit into long and lean pendants lately. I love this patterned stoneware version.

Super fun double sided porcelain beads.

Earthy and rustic brown stoneware button sets. These would make a great bracelet focal or an accent on a nice hand knit hat.

And lastly I have some pretty layered pendants all dressed up in happy spring colors.

Everything will start to go in the shop at noon tomorrow. I have been listing everything at once lately but keep in mind that it takes quite a while to make all the listings live, usually around 10-15 minutes.

Thanks so much for all the dead-kiln-support! It is still not quite fixed but it's on its way. The problem I thought it had turned out be an incorrect diagnosis so more new parts are on the way. But in the meantime my brilliant handy husband manged to get it working to get through one more firing.

This week I made some customer requests. First up there are two different bird pendants. Lots of colors for all your bird pendant needs.

Several people were unable to get the few two piece lace-up hearts that I made last time so I made some more!

It's that time of year once again! Time for hearts!!! I could make hearts all the time, actually, I love them that much.

First up I have some shank buttons sets shown above.

Heart Flower earring sets.

Printed heart pendants with rock crystal beads.

Kiss Me bracelet focals.

Two piece lace-up heart pendants.

Charm holder heart pendants.

I've been having a ton of fun making some felted wool bangles and cuffs the past few weeks. Anyone who knows me knows of my obsession with knitting and yarn for the past several years and I am always trying to think of ways to incorporate that into my work. These bangles were first knit and then felted down to size.

They are super soft and, of course, warm!

I've also been playing around with needle felting and have made some really fun cuffs!

Hopefully you all will enjoy these as much as I do!
