Thu 11 Mar – Mon 10 May 2010

Exhibition Opening Reception:

Thu 11 Mar, 6 – 8pm All Welcome

The Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year (IWPOY) 2009 returns to the Café Wall, displaying a breath-taking 50 shortlisted images from last years entries. This years theme; ‘It’s a small world’ is fairly open and includes; macros, close-ups, travel landscapes and locations (small world distances), small objects, flowers, animals or anything that a photographer would consider relates to this theme.

Once again, the many hundreds of entries have allowed IWPOY to view the diverse range of both amateur and professional photographers we have here on the Isle of Wight. Wildlife TV Presenter Chris Packham and former Fleet Street photographer and freelance writer Bob Aylott kindly agreed to assist with the judging.

Three winning entries selected by the judges in November 2009 were; David Vennings from Wellow scooping the Isle of Wight Photographer of the Year 2009 Award with ‘Hey Good Looking’. Second place went to Ian Scovell with ‘Solitude in a small world’ and third place secured by Jason Swain with ‘Rise Above Plastics – it all ends up somewhere’.

There were some great wildlife-themed prizes up for grabs kindly donated by the National Trust, Wildlife Trust and Gift to Nature. The winners received large Canvas Prints of their winning images. In addition, the overall winner received a copy of Bob Aylott’s new book “Six Days That Rocked the World” – a story in photographs of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival.

Following the success of previous IWPOY Competitions, the Isle of Wight Biodiversity Partnership this year came on-board to support an extra competition category encouraging budding photographers to get intimate with wildlife and bring the natural world that little bit closer to home. The theme was ‘It’s a very small world – Go Wild on Wight’ which aimed to inspire photographers to get out and about across the Isle of Wight, the emphasis being to know your home patch.

The ‘It’s a very small world – Go Wild on Wight’ category winner was Gay Farmer for her exquisite study of a ‘Drangonfly’. This was closely followed by Stuart Shore with ‘Red Squirrel’ and Paul Blackley with ‘Male Barn Owl’.

Along with these winning images, all of the fifty shortlisted entries from the main IWPOY category and Go Wild on Wight winners will be exhibited at Quay Arts and touring to other venues throughout 2010. This will further enable more people to recognise the quality and the skills of Island Photographers.

IWPOY 2009 – It’s A Small World runs from: Thu 11 Mar – Mon 10 May,

Café Wall, Quay Arts, Sea Street, Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight PO30 5BD

As part of World Book Day on Thursday 4 March, mums and dads as well as carers can join their children at one of three specially arranged ‘Family Learning Breakfasts’.

Isle of Wight Council has successfully secured three of only 15 national family breakfasts which will take place at Sandham Middle School, Oakfield Primary School and West Wight Youth and Community Centre.

The breakfasts are organised by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) and its aim is to provide opportunities for families to take part in activities that could lead to further interest in reading and learning as a family.

As well as breakfast being on offer, each day will also provide ‘quick read’ books. Quick reads are short, sharp shots of entertainment, in simple terms they are bite-sized books by bestselling writers and celebrities.

Now celebrating its fifth anniversary, the Quick Reads initiative is a major collaboration between many individuals and organisations including leading authors, publishers, government departments, education bodies, the Arts Council, libraries and many more.

The books have been widely used in Skills for Life lessons and for people learning English as a second language at colleges and community centres, libraries, prisons and workplaces across the country.

They’ve also been used in many other areas including hospitals, stroke recovery units, dyslexia centres, care homes and even Army and RAF bases.

Each event begins at 0800 and runs until 0845.

World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe

Carisbrooke Castle’s four-legged ‘famous five’ – donkeys, Jack, Jill, Jimbob, Joseph and Jigsaw – are eagerly waiting to welcoming Easter Visitors to their home. Families can visit them in their stables to find out a bit about their pampered life and also in the castle’s equally famous well-house, where for just few minutes a day, they love to demonstrate how the waterwheel once worked to supply the castle with its water.

With mighty battlements to march and a keep to climb, Carisbrooke truly is a storybook castle, just perfect for a day out with children. An introductory film narrated by comedian Phill Jupitus, brings the castle characters to life and explains the history of the site in a fun, informative way.

Youngsters can dress up as soldiers, enjoy interactive displays, and even fire a medieval cannon or crossbow. Families can pick up a set of bowls and play on the Bowling Green as castle resident King Charles I did to relieve the boredom during his imprisonment.

The castle’s museum houses a fascinating exhibition packed with memorabilia and information about the Isle of Wight and the new light and airy shop is brimming with themed souvenirs and gifts to take home.

Carisbrooke Castle is open from 10am to 5pm daily. Admission is £7.00 for adults; £6.00 for concessions and £3.50 for children, family ticket £17.50. Free for English Heritage members. Carisbrooke Castle (PO30 1XY) is 1½ miles SW of Newport.

MAGICAL ECO EASTER EGG TRAILS

MOTTISTONE MANOR GARDEN: EASTER SUNDAY, 11am – 4pm

Normal admission prices apply (National Trust members free) plus £1.50 for each trail sheet / participating child.

Families looking to get outdoors and celebrate Easter 2010 in the fresh air, in a traditional and magical style, should look no further than any one of 250 National Trust properties across the UK. Building on the success of 2008 and 2009, Cadbury has joined forces again with the National Trust to host their national Easter Egg Trails, and the 2010 events will offer even more fun, activity and education for the whole family.

On the Island egg Hunters at Mottistone Manor Garden and the Needles Old Battery will follow a trail map around the property visiting trail points and collecting clues. Just like last year, the UK’s favourite confectionery company is giving parents special eco-packaged ‘Egghead’ Easter eggs to hand out to every child who completes the trail. Eggheads are specially made with minimum packaging, to save waste and help the environment.

All participants will also get to take part in the ‘Face on your Egg’ competition: the hunt for talented youngsters to help design the next generation of Eggheads. The winner could see their ‘face on an egg’ instore in 2010, as well as receiving an all expenses paid trip to Cadbury World. The 2009 winner’s design will appear instore from February 2010.

Cadbury’s support of the National Trust Easter Egg Trail is part of the company’s ‘Purple goes Green’ initiative, a programme to reduce its impact on the environment. In 2010 Cadbury has reduced the packaging of its Big Gesture Eggs by 35% on average and removed plastic from the range. By reducing its packaging, Cadbury is reducing the number of lorry loads needed to transport it whole Easter range Eggs by 2,298, reducing CO2 emissions by 460 tonnes.

Cadbury is also making a significant contribution to the National Trust Countryside Sites conservation programme as part of the Easter Egg Trail activity and its commitment to the environment.

I work with children who have speech and language difficulties. Sometimes people confuse me with elocution teachers but this is different.

Do you have a child who has any of the following difficulties?

Unclear speech, .g. says “gog” instead of”dog”, has a lisp on their ’s’, can’t say words beginning with ’sh’ or ‘ch’, misses the ends of words, can’t pronounce ‘f’, ’s’, or blends.

Not producing enough words for their age. For a rough guide:

~1 year olds should be producing single words

~18 months- 2 years should be putting 2 words together

~2-3 years should be putting 3-4 words together

~3 + should be making complex sentences

~ 4+ should be having complicated conversations and using various question forms

Have auditory memory difficulties

Have difficulties with understanding what is being said to them. Often parents will say their child understands everything but it is amazing how many clues we give them when we speak e.g. pointing , gestures , eye-pointing/gazing, routines and even tone of voice.

Stammering ~ I have recently seen a little girl who was teased at her dance class because she couldn’t say her name without stammering. Can you imagine how demoralising that is for a 3 year old? After her treatment, her mother wrote:

“ Thank you so much for everything you have done for Mya over the last few months. It’s amazing to see her speech improve so dramatically. She really enjoyed all the sessions with you as well which really helped.”

Pragmatics difficulties ~ a child may have difficulties understanding or using body language ; misinterpreting or failing to pick up on ‘clues’ in social situations ; confused by humour and jokes ; difficulties with seeing things from a different point of view ; getting the ‘wrong end of the stick’.

Selective Mutism ~ do you have a child who can speak comfortably in some situations but is persistently silent in others (less familiar situations) ?

Verbal dyspraxia ~ a child with this condition finds it difficult to make quick, accurate movements with the mouth that are needed to speak clearly. They may also find it difficult to remember all the words in a long sentence.

Autistic Spectrum disorders ~ Children with this developmental disorder differ greatly in severity. They all present with pragmatic difficulties and often experience speech, language and processing difficulties.

Does your child have reading and/or writing difficulties? This is an area that we are able to assess and assist in now as my assistant has vast experience in this field.

Beverley Jessup has worked with children like the ones above since 1990 after qualifying as a Speech & Language Therapist from De Montfort University, Leicester.

Beverley founded Speech Train in 2005 and she treats each child as an individual and meets them at their communication need, advising and supporting parents in the treatment plan.

Recently, Beverley took on an assistant called Diane Etherton who has worked in schools with children with a range of speech, language , literacy and numeracy needs. She has completed accredited training provided by Beverley and is very experienced. This allows parents who are financially restricted , to have access to speech & language therapy for as little as £10 per half hour every week from Diane, following an assessment and report provided by Beverley.

If you are concerned about your child and feel that their needs are not currently recognised or met, then please get in touch with Beverley who will be able to advise, diagnose , provide a written programme and report and let know know what your child needs. During February and March 2010, all assessments and reports will cost 25% cheaper.

So don’t suffer in silence and most of all if your child is suffering in silence….get professional help.
