An “Aspire” middle school in Los Angeles is now able to deliver the DLF’s Quiet Time program to more than 90 at-risk students, thanks to a generous donation from the Aileen Getty Foundation. Several of the students struggle with learning disabilities and even symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

The Getty Foundation donation also enabled DLF to continue its ongoing partnerships with New Village Charter High School, an innovative school offering personalized education for girls in a small class setting; Children of the Night, an internationally-respected teen shelter offering rehabilitation and high school education to victims of human-trafficking; and an LA-based charter school offering over 500 indigenous students a rigorous course of study and knowledge of their native cultural values.

1. RENEWABLE ENERGY: Proposal to link the nation's grid sparks a debate(ClimateWire, 02/03/2010)

The Tres Amigas transmission project in New Mexico, which seeks to link the nation's three power grids to share wind power across the United States, has attracted both eager allies and some determined foes.

Scandia Wind Southwest LLC, a venture led by Norwegian wind power developers, has proposed to build an initial 2,250 megawatts of wind power in the Texas Panhandle, with a potential capacity of 10,000 MW. That amount of power, the equivalent of 10 large nuclear power plants, could move into the Eastern and Western grid interconnections, and to Texas' independent grid, over the Tres Amigas transmission linkage.

The Tres Amigas project would operate three power switching hubs connected by several miles of superconducting direct-current lines, on a 22.5-square-mile section near Clovis, N.M., adjoining Texas and Oklahoma. The hubs would direct power flows in and out of the three regions, whose electrical systems are not synchronized, creating bridges for electric power to flow across the entire country, wherever transmission capacity permitted.

Tres Amigas has strong support from New Mexico's Democratic Governor, Bill Richardson. The American Wind Energy Association and the Solar Energy Industries Association support the concept of uniting the three non-synchronized grids. Landowners in the Panhandle area -- such as Crosby County Wind Farm LLC, a Dallas-based company with 100 landowners and 30,000 available acres -- are behind the project. A subsidiary of ITC Holdings, the Michigan-based independent transmission company, is interested in building lines to the Tres Amigas project.

No one, perhaps, is more enthusiastic than Harald Dirdal, a partner with Havgul Clean Energy, a Norwegian company that is developing several thousand megawatts of onshore and offshore wind power projects in its country. Dirdal said that he and his partners were prospecting for wind power opportunities in the United States when they learned last year about the Tres Amigas venture, led by Phillip Harris, former head of the PJM Interconnection, the grid operator in much of the mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes regions.

"We thought if we could do a big development in the Texas Panhandle, a really big development, we could interconnect into the three national grids ourselves," Dirdal said. "We had no clue about Tres Amigas' existence whatsoever. So literally I was jumping up and down in Oslo when I heard about, for about half an hour, in pure joy."

But lined up against Tres Amigas are units of Occidental Petroleum, the fourth-largest U.S. oil and gas company, whose sales totaled $24 billion in 2008 and $15 billion last year. Through its subsidiaries, Occidental is a major purchaser of power for its chemicals, hydrocarbon and manufacturing businesses, and a marketer of electricity, as well.

A transmission 'game changer' collides with 1930s law

As Harris has said, Tres Amigas is a "game changer," a facility that could move large amounts of power in any direction among the three grids, with potentially big impacts on prices and profits that existing generators now receive, as well as consumers' electricity costs. Tres Amigas' financial plan depends on selling its transmission access to generators and power marketers who would take advantage of the connection to buy cheaper power in one of the grids and sell it in another when prices are higher. That makes it a competitive outsider in parts of the established markets.

Occidental is the most vocal opponent of Tres Amigas' requests for two rulings from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that it says are essential. The project is seeking FERC approval to charge negotiated transmission rates for access to its network.

And it asks FERC to disclaim jurisdiction over any Texas transmission line owners that connect with Tres Amigas, a crucial procedural step that would maintain the independence of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which runs the grid in three-quarters of the state. Texas created its own grid in the New Deal to keep from being regulated by Washington's new Federal Power Commission, FERC's predecessor.

Occidental has filed several 50-page-plus broadsides with FERC against the Tres Amigas plan, and has brought forward an expert witness to challenge Harris' technical arguments on why his project's engineering design would keep Texas' electrons from "intermingling" with outside grids. Keeping the electrons separate means that the Texas system would not be linked to its neighbors as a policy matter, keeping it clear of FERC's jurisdiction over interstate wholesale electricity markets, Harris argues.

Harris stated that intermingling does not occur because the alternating-current energy flowing into the Tres Amigas "superstation" would be converted to direct current at each of the project's three hubs linked with the three grids. "Nothing is mixed," Harris said.

Occidental's expert, Songhoon Yang, with the consulting firm Bates White LLC in Washington, D.C., argued in a FERC filing that it is obvious that electric power will be moving among the grids through the Tres Amigas facility, so Harris' argument that the project's engineering interrupts the flow is not valid.

FERC has not ruled yet on either of the Tres Amigas petitions. Several of the parties that have commented in the commission's two dockets, ER10-396 and EL10-22, are urging the commission to take its time, because of the project's uniqueness and the difficulty of assessing its impact.

The Electric Power Supply Association, representing merchant power producers, said it took no position on the fate of the Tres Amigas project but urged FERC to move with care.

Is Texas wind power being undermined or efficiently shared?

The Public Utility Commission of Texas noted that it is in the midst of ruling on new transmission projects that would connect 18 gigawatts of wind power to the state's urban areas -- the result of lengthy renewable energy planning. It wants to see a stronger legal case made at FERC to ensure that it stays independent. Texas Industrial Energy Consumers, another Tres Amigas opponent, says the massive transmission investment Texas is planning to bring its wind resources to market could be undermined by Tres Amigas.

The American Public Power Association said that while it appreciates Tres Amigas' "bold vision," FERC needs to conduct its own analysis of the project's impact on electricity prices. "It should not simply rely on Tres Amigas's assertions that it 'cannot cause prices to rise above competitive levels' because power buyers would go elsewhere," the association said.

Three Occidental companies and Texas Industrial Energy Consumers have asked FERC to order discovery and hold a "contested evidentiary hearing" on the Tres Amigas project -- a lengthy process that advantages the side with the deepest pockets, attorneys note.

However FERC rules on Tres Amigas' two requests, the project may still face hurdles unless new policies are forthcoming from Congress or FERC to support the siting and financing of transmission projects for renewable power, energy experts say.

Dirdal, who has spent much of the past year traveling to potential wind power sites in the United States, has been in that field since 1995 but said he is still learning about U.S. energy politics.

He argued that linking the grids would permit the greatest possible sharing of wind power originating in different time zones and different climate regions, substantially smoothing out the effects of wind's variability and intermittency. The result would be a stronger wind energy network less in need of expensive backup generation, he said. But the venture does challenge the existing order on the grid, and that is evidently a force to be reckoned with, he said.

Wells Fargo shut their doors early Tuesday afternoon when twenty to thirty protesters from the Oakland Education Association (OEA) and ACCE protested outside Wells Fargo’s Fruitvale branch chanting “Bail Out Schools, Not Banks”

The Oakland Education Association is outraged that across the country, public education and other programs are suffering devastating cuts while billionaire bankers receive trillion dollar bailouts from the federal government.
Bob Mandell, Executive Board Member of the OEA says that Oakland Education Association decided to get involved as a change agent five years ago when the State took over Oakland schools. “One of the first things administrators announced was that everyone would have to take pay cuts, which motivated us to investigate why. We discovered that Oakland was not a poor city! Oakland has the 18th largest gross domestic product in the U.S. and the motor that drives this city is the Port of Oakland. Running a respectable second is downtown commercial development. Forbes rated Oakland the 8th most desirable city for commercial development and redevelopment.
The next thing we discovered was that Shorenstein Properties owns major property in downtown Oakland as well as other major cities yet what corporate Oakland pays the city is a joke! The Port [of Oakland] does $30 billion dollars a year and charges zero rent to international shippers. We (the OEA) approached Golden West and other corporate entities in Oakland and told them as major employers that they have a responsibility to prepare Oakland youth so they are job ready. International Working Group on Services in HealthCare, Environment, Energy and Transportation

In the coming years, we anticipate a diverse and rich set of technologies and service systems that can sense and respond to the needs of the society in areas such as HealthCare, Environment, Energy, Transportation, Green Cars and others. We envision that such service systems will not only transform the way we live, but also dramatically change the underlying services economy.

This working group will ask a fundamental question: What does it take to design reliable, cost-efficient and manageable large service systems that can address the complex needs of the society. Examples of large service systems include healthcare service systems (e.g. remote home monitoring and tele-health), global supply chains, large environmental sensor systems (e.g. water management services), road traffic systems and large enterprises.

This working group will keep a focus on real world case-studies and examine the applicability of principles from nature and markets to design large service systems. The working group will bring together enthusiastic participants from business and academia willing to engage in an open discussion on design and challenges in large service systems. The output of this working-group in the short-term will include the following:

Deviant, aka David Christopher, began playing his tripped-out blend of deep progressive house in 1998 at venues throughout New York City, including Vinyl, Limelight, Roxy, and Cheetah. As a DJ, Deviant's late-night sound has been the perfect finish during closing sets for Sean Cusick, Steve Porter, Hybrid, John Howard, Jerry Bonham, Mazi, Randall Jones, Habersham, and Thomas Penton, helping him twice earn the Cleveland Music Award for Best DJ. He has also proven his ability to warm up the dance floor, opening for Sandra Collins, BT, Max Graham, Jondi & Spesh, Tim Skinner, Trendroid, Austin Leeds, Micro, Noel Sanger, Three, Steve Gerrard, John Howard, George Acosta, and Pete Moss. Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants (Latin: nanos gigantium humeris insidentes) is a Western metaphor meaning "One who develops future intellectual pursuits by understanding the research and works created by notable thinkers of the past"; a contemporary interpretation. However, the metaphor was first recorded in the twelfth century and attributed to Bernard of Chartres. It was famously uttered by seventeenth-century scientist Isaac Newton (see below). The picture is derived from the Greek mythology where the blind giant Orion carried his servant Cedalion on his shoulders.

The attribution to Bernard is due to John of Salisbury. In 1159, John wrote in his Metalogicon:^[1]

"Bernard of Chartres used to say that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size."

("Dicebat Bernardus Carnotensis nos esse quasi nanos, gigantium humeris insidentes, ut possimus plura eis et remotiora videre, non utique proprii visus acumine, aut eminentia corporis, sed quia in altum subvenimur et extollimur magnitudine gigantea")

According to medieval historian Richard Southern, Bernard is comparing the modern scholar (12th century) to the ancient scholars of Greece and Rome:^[2]

[The phrase] sums up the quality of the cathedral schools in the history of learning, and indeed characterizes the age which opened withGerbert (950-1003) and Fulbert (960-1028) and closed in the first quarter of the 12th century with Peter Abelard. [The phrase] is not a great claim; neither, however, is it an example of abasement before the shrine of antiquity. It is a very shrewd and just remark, and the important and original point was the dwarf could see a little further than the giant. That this was possible was above all due to the cathedral schools with their lack of a well-rooted tradition and their freedom from a clearly defined routine of study.

The phrase also appears in the works of the Jewish tosaphist Isaiah di Trani (c. 1180 – c. 1250):^[3]

"Should Joshua the son of Nun endorse a mistaken position, I would reject it out of hand, I do not hesitate to express my opinion, regarding such matters in accordance with the modicum of intelligence alloted to me. I was never arrogant claiming "My Wisdom served me well". Instead I applied to myself the parable of the philosophers. For I heard the following from the philosophers, The wisest of the philosophers asked: "We admit that our predecessors were wiser than we. At the same time we criticize their comments, often rejecting them and claiming that the truth rests with us. How is this possible?" The wise philosopher responded: "Who sees further a dwarf or a giant? Surely a giant for his eyes are situated at a higher level than those of the dwarf. But if the dwarf is placed on the shoulders of the giant who sees further? ... So too we are dwarfs astride the shoulders of giants. We master their wisdom and move beyond it. Due to their wisdom we grow wise and are able to say all that we say, but not because we are greater than they."

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, in The Friend (1828), wrote:

"The dwarf sees farther than the giant, when he has the giant's shoulder to mount on."

Against this notion, Friedrich Nietzsche argues that a dwarf (the academic scholar) brings even the most sublime heights down to his level of understanding. In the section of Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1882) entitled "On the Vision and the Riddle", Zarathustra climbs to great heights with a dwarf on his shoulders to show him his greatest thought. Once there however, the dwarf fails to understand the profundity of the vision and Zarathustra reproaches him for "making things too easy on [him]self." If there is to be anything resembling "progress" in the history of philosophy, Nietzsche elsewhere^[specify] writes, it can only come from those rare giants among men, shouting out to one another across the annals of time.

The Year of Creation, 5508, and the Golden Section

In 46 B.C. the supreme Priest Julius Caesar by his decision carried out calendar reform. Introduced by Caesar, the calendar is still called Julian, though its elaboration was made by a group of Alexandria astronomers at the head of Sosigenes. The year with the length of 365.25 days was made the basis of the new calendar. Three Julian years out of every four have 365 days each (non leap years) and one � 366 days (leap year). Caesar decided to start counting of days of the new calendar from the New Moon, happened on Januarius 1, 45 B.C., thus moving the beginning of the year from Martius 1. The first year of the Julian calendar was a leap year.

In gratitude for the calendar reform and taking into account outstanding merits in the state and military spheres, the Senate decided to rename the month of Quintilis, when Caesar was born, into the month of Julius. The Julian calendar is the solar calendar. Its basic is the tropical year, and its months are in no way coordinated with the Moon. But the length of the year of 365.25 days, which is its basis, does not coincide with the length of the tropical year of 365.242 days, and there is no mechanism in the calendar's algorithm to correct this inaccuracy. As a result, every 128 years and 68 days one more divergence of one day is added, and the Julian year does not coincide more and more with the tropical year.

"This calls for wisdom. If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is a man's number. His number is 666."

Dear Friends,

The Responsible Endowments Coalition believes that a more equitable and just world is possible, and that colleges and universities, as institutions dedicated to educating young people to live in the world, should be acting on the values that they try to instill in their students and create on campus - citizenship, sustainability and respect.

Institutions of higher education are leaders in many of these respects on campus, and vocally promote diversity and environmental sustainability - they can also be leaders in changing the way that money flows to influence their students and the world around them.

A commitment to changing their universities for the better brought more than 80 students from schools across the country to New York for REC's 7th Annual National Conference, Harnessing the Power of Our Universities' Money, held this past weekend at Columbia University. Read on to learn more about the about the content, the speakers and the campaigns currently underway at our schools!

This is also why it is both so exciting and angering to see an article like the one published in the New York Times at the end of September on the University of California's poor proxy voting record. REC students on campus have successfully made this a major issue for the UC system, but the investment office still holds that their job, pure and simple, is to make as much money as possible. Money First. What kind of message does that send to the world from a school that has changed perceptions about public education by bringing higher education to a much wider range of people?

At REC, we are working to change how universities understand their finances, bring stakeholders into the process and oversight into the investment offices of the impacts that their investments are having.

In this isue, you'll read about our 7th Annual National Conference, new blog posts including one about the UC system and an interview where Steve Schueth of First Affirmative Financial Networks shares a message with students about responsible and sustainable investment.

Merton gained recognition on chat room site, ChatRoulette.com, which allows people to connect at random with other users via videocam.

The comic pianist was approached to play at Gatwick by T-Mobile, the mobile phone provider behind the series of flash-mob ad campaigns launched throughout London.

Despite his new found popularity, Merton says he plans to keep his true identity under wraps and that if his celebrity ever becomes bigger than his act, the gig is up.

(Reuters Life!) - New York City's cabdrivers will be subject to a new dress code, the Taxi and Limousine Commission said on Friday.
The regulations will instructing cabbies to "present a professional appearance," said David Yassky, TLC commissioner.
An older dress code for taxi drivers has been on the books since 1987, when complaints about bedraggled and badly groomed drivers prompted the TLC to ban certain clothing, such as sleeveless shirts, short shorts and open-toed shoes.
Those rules were later relaxed and are rarely enforced.
The TLC head said the new rule is designed to be easier to follow.
"It will also have the positive effect of reminding drivers that, in a customer service-oriented industry, there are professional standards that have to be met," Yassky said.
The new rule gives no definition of what constitutes a professional appearance.
Representatives of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, which represents some 11,000 taxi drivers, were not available for comment.
The new rule is to be discussed at a public hearing in December.

Cal beats Stanford as band blocks field

On November 20, 1982, the Cal football team wins an improbable last-second victory over Stanford when they complete five lateral passes around members of the Cardinals’ marching band, who had wandered onto the field a bit early to celebrate the upset they were sure their team had won, and score a touchdown. After catching the last pass of the series, Cal’s Kevin Moen careened through the confused horn section and made it safely to the end zone. Then he slammed into trombone player Gary Tyrell. (A photograph from the Oakland Tribune of the jubilant Moen and the terrified Tyrell in the moment just before the collision is still displayed triumphantly all over Berkeley.)
