It's decision day for Canadian high school hoops phenom Andrew Wiggins. Who has the best shot of landing him next fall?

The post Smith on Wiggins: Where will he go? appeared first on Sportsnet.ca.

Where will Andrew Wiggins go?

That’s the question many basketball fans around Canada and the U.S. are asking today.

Here are the Top 5 choices by all accounts (in no order):

Kansas

Kentucky

North Carolina

Florida State

Wichita State

As I tweeted earlier, I’m predicting that this phenom — born in Toronto and raised in Thornhill — will choose Florida State. His father, Mitchell, played for the Seminoles and his mother, Marita Payne Wiggins, ran track there as well.

Add to the fact that the Seminoles would give Wiggins his own team to ‘star’ on; a program that would be truly built (re-built) around the youngster, and I think that’s why he goes to Tallahassee. It also doesn’t hurt that his high school teammate, friend and fellow Canadian, Xavier Rathan-Mayes has already signed-on with the ‘Noles as well.

But a case can certainly be made that Wiggins would be better served to head to a bigger, more-established program. The Canadian star shouldn’t have to worry about flaming out — his talent is legit. He’s not a flash in the pan. The kid is a star-in-the-making if he hasn’t reached that elite status already.

Wiggins will be featured on nationally-televised games in the U.S. (and Canada) every week, and barring a major setback, he’ll be the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft as well. Plus, he will get a ton of international exposure with Team Canada. However, being in the spotlight all of the time can expose his warts as well.

If anyone is waiting to find faults or flaws to Wiggins’ game, they could easily be magnified that much more at a ‘smaller’ basketball program like FSU. Wiggins could ‘hide’ a little more at some of the bigger schools mentioned above.

Kentucky is stacked. Wiggins would only add to their vast talent. They’re, arguably, already the leading contenders for the 2014 NCAA Championship and adding Wiggins would vault them even closer to the top.

North Carolina has a rich tradition that cannot be denied. Wiggins’ presence may make them the top team in the ACC. But keep in mind the fact that the conference is changing this year and becoming a lot more competitive. Will it be harder to win when facing massive competition from Syracuse, Notre Dame and others?

Kansas has lost (or is about to lose) a ton of talent to the NBA Draft. They’ll be depleted but Wiggins would keep them relevant and in contention.

The Wichita State Shockers are a sentimental long shot given that Wiggins’ brother, Nick, plays there. I’d be shocked (pardon the pun) if this was the ultimate choice though.

The decision will be announced around 12 – 1215 p.m. ET today. Keep it tuned to Sportsnet.ca and Sportsnet 590 the FAN for the latest.

Though Bryan Colangelo acknowledged that he’ll be meeting with the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment board of governors in “two-to-three weeks,” it seems pretty clear that he’ll be back for another season with the Raptors. And if that truly is the case, with the organization likely picking up his option year and perhaps adding a new option too, Colangelo has now publicly stated that his head coach in 2013-14 will be Dwane Casey. He was emphatic in saying that.

So where does Toronto go from here?

For the first time in franchise history, the Raptors are sitting on the outside of the playoffs for a fifth-straight year. Prior to this season Toronto’s longest drought was four years — not that five total appearances in 18 years is anything to write home about.

At the risk of venturing down the path of revisionist history, Chris Bosh and company should have been in the post-season during Bosh’s final season in T.O. That team, on paper, was better than it performed and Bosh’s absence in key games down the stretch hurt the Raptors. Not winning at home in a late-season ‘win-and-you’re-in’ game against the Bulls didn’t help either; Toronto wasted a huge opportunity there.

Had the Raptors made it into the playoffs that season, would Bosh have stayed instead of bolting for Miami? No, but it would have given young players like DeMar DeRozan, Andrea Bargnani and Amir Johnson some valuable experience going forward. It also could have sent a message to the rest of the league that Toronto, in spite of the pending departure of Bosh, is a team that may be heading in the right direction; a playoff team, period.

Again, with hindsight being 20/20, folks can argue all day about whether or not Colangelo should have traded Bosh at the deadline that season; at a time when the Raptors had a franchise high in wins at the All-Star break and were looking to possibly run down the Celtics for the top spot in the Atlantic Division. The president and general manager rolled the dice, in a sense, on retaining Bosh at season’s end and the gamble did not pay off. Dwyane Wade welcomed Bosh and LeBron James to South Beach and the Raptors were left hitting the reset button.

That’s where Toronto now stands. Three years removed from their franchise player leaving, with little coming back to the team in return. Call it a build or a rebuild — call it what you want — the reality is the organization had to start over in many ways. And three seasons into a redo is not a lot of time. You can’t hit the reset button and expect instant gratification.

Season 1, post-Bosh, the team was not going anywhere and few (if any) fans would say otherwise or claim they had higher expectations. But following their struggles the club made a bold move in the drafting of a player, Jonas Valanciunas, who had no plans to play in North America the following season.

Season 2, post-Bosh, Toronto was hoping to catch lightning in a bottle in a lockout-shortened season with a new coach in town too. But few believed the team was a playoff contender. And the Raps patiently waited on Valanciunas.

Season 3, post-Bosh, the plan was for Toronto to build on the defensive philosophies that Casey had instilled while finally welcoming Valanciunas to the line-up along with a new point guard (Kyle Lowry) and a top-10 draft pick (Terrence Ross). There was chatter of staying in the hunt for the post-season and wanting to make some noise but, again, the playoffs were likely a reach (NOTE: I said prior to the year and maintained it all year, the Raptors had to play “all-world” to have a shot for seventh … might battle for eighth … but in the end probably fall somewhere in the nine-11 range).

The team finished four games out of the final seed in the Eastern Conference, finishing 10th overall after losing the tie-breaker to the ninth-seeded Sixers. Toronto’s 4-19 start to the 2012-13 campaign was followed by a 30-29 finish over the final 59 games. But the club took a step back defensively and blew far too many leads in the fourth quarter, late in the game, and the injury bug played a role in stunting things too (Lowry, Andrea Bargnani, Valanciunas, and Landry Fields all missed major chunks of games).

As folks look ahead to Season 4, post-Bosh, are the Raptors in position to finally get back to the dance?

With the chemistry and continuity intact with the GM and coach returning, could this line-up — now featuring a dynamic (though highly-paid) scorer in Rudy Gay too — contend for the post-season? Is a starting five (well, at least four-fifths of it) of Lowry, Gay, DeRozan and Valanciunas (along with Johnson, Fields and Ross) good enough to snag the eighth seed, or higher, in the East?

It should be.

Experience may be Toronto’s biggest deterrent. Of those players listed above, few have post-season experience and only Gay can truly be considered a “veteran” of the game. The Raptors are young. They need a voice on the floor and in the locker room. but they do have talent.

It’s now up to Casey to maximize what he has and it’s up to Colangelo to arm his coach with even more weapons — admittedly, with little financial flexibility — going forward (dealing the enigmatic Bargnani would be a start).

With the Maple Leafs ending their nine-year slide and expectations high for the Blue Jays as well (in spite of their slow start) it’s time for the Raptors to be relevant again and rise from their second-season slumber.

There cannot be an easier award to vote for this season than Rookie of the Year.

Even though LeBron James will take home the Most Valuable Player honors, small cases could be made for Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant and a few others. But among the rookies, one youngster stands out more than anyone else and his path to this prestigious award is sure to be wide open in what should be a unanimous, land-slide victory.

His name is Damian Lillard.

Lillard has had a spectacular season for the Blazers; reigniting a fan base that was still bothered by the loss of Brandon Roy from the long-term plans (and projected success) in Portland.

Though the 2012-13 campaign in the Pacific Northwest is coming to a horrific end (via an 11-game losing streak), there have been plenty of reasons to be optimistic about a team once known in many basketball circles as the Jail Blazers.

Lillard is at the root of everything and everyone that is now right in Portland. He is the athletic, scoring guard that every team wants in today’s NBA. He’s durable, deceptive, and dangerous — and decent on defense too.

After going sixth overall in the 2012 draft, the Weber State product has exceeded all expectations — especially considering the fact that he’s running the point, in the West, at such a young age. He has won the Rookie of the Month honors in his Conference every month this season and he could be well on his way to a clean sweep with April’s award as well.

Lillard appeared in all of Portland’s 82 games and has given the Blazers coaching staff and management team plenty to be excited about as you gloss over his stats:

2012-13 averages: 19 PPG, 6.5 APG, 3.1 RPG, 42.9% FG, 36.8% 3PT, 84.4% FT.

This should be a land-slide win for Lillard, but for the purpose of filling out your ballots and giving at least a little bit of love to the rookies that have turned in terrific seasons too:

Anthony Davis, New Orleans Hornets

2012-13 averages: 13.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1.2 APG, 1.8 blocks. 51.6% FG and 75.1% FT.

His frail frame has held up for the most part and he’s going to have a spectacular career. Davis’ defence may have made the biggest impression on folks around the NBA.

Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards

2012-13 averages: 13.9 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 2.4 APG, 41.0% FG, 38.6% 3PT, and 78.6% FT.

Injuries have prevented Beal from playing more than 56 games, and he’s on the shelf right now with a stress fracture in his leg. A long-term 1-2 punch of Beal and John Wall is reason to be optimistic in D.C. though.

Dion Waiters, Cleveland Cavaliers

2012-13 averages: 14.7 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 3 assists, 1 steals, 45.4% FG, and 74.5 FT%.

Like Beal, injuries have prevented Waiters from truly being in serious consideration for this award but he has proven to be a quality scorer at this level. That said, when teammate Kyrie Irving was out of the Cavaliers line-up, Waiters’ scoring and his ability to run the point kept Cleveland afloat.

Other notable rookies in 2012-13: Jonas Valanciunas, Toronto Raptors; Harrison Barnes, Golden State Warriors; and Andre Drummond, Detroit Pistons.

You can’t blame Mike D’Antoni.

Sure, you can point your finger at him for a lot of things this season; especially his inability or unwillingness to adapt his style and his coaching philosophies to the personnel he has on the Los Angeles Lakers. But you can’t pin the Kobe Bryant injury on him.

Kobe answers to one man and one man only: Kobe.

Prior to his left Achilles injury late in yesterday’s fourth quarter against the Golden State Warriors, Bryant had already been hobbled earlier in the half. In fact, it looked as though he might have to come out of the game. But he persevered. He battled through the pain and vaulted Los Angeles into a much-needed comeback against Golden State. He wanted to be on the floor and there was nothing that D’Antoni or the Lakers well-respected training staff could do about it.

Thus, it’s fate or fluke, not fault, that is responsible for the five-time champion being on the sidelines now; with many questioning the impact this injury could have on his career.

Heading into Friday’s game, Bryant had played over 41 minutes in six-straight games. He actually logged 47 or more minutes (including a full 48-minute effort against the Portland Trail Blazers on April 10) in four of those six games. But it wasn’t over-use by D’Antoni or the Lakers. Kobe played because he was needed. Period. And though former MVP, now 34 years old, has logged more minutes than any other Laker, his 38.6 per-game average is only slightly higher than what he turned in last season and it’s the seventh time in the last nine years that the ‘Black Mamba’ played 38 or more:

2004-05: 40.7 min (played 66 of 82 games)
2005-06: 41.0 min (played 80 of 82 games)
2006-07: 40.8 min (played 77 of 82 games)
2007-08: 38.9 min (played 82 of 82 games)
2008-09: 36.1 min (played 82 of 82 games)
2009-10: 38.8 min (played 73 of 82 games)
2010-11: 33.9 min (played 82 of 82 games)
2011-12: 38.5 min (played 58 of 66 games)
2012-13: 38.6 min (played 78 of 80 games — and will now miss the final two games and the playoffs if LA makes it))

Bryant has been durable and resilient for 17 years, missing only 102 games over nearly two decades of dominant play in the NBA. And it’s that strength, determination, focus and fire-power that will surely spur him on in his rehabilitation and comeback. The critics and cynics will be eating their words based on what Bryant posted on his Facebook page following Friday’s injury:

This is such BS! All the training and sacrifice just flew out the window with one step that I’ve done millions of times! The frustration is unbearable. The anger is rage. Why the hell did this happen ?!? Makes no damn sense. Now I’m supposed to come back from this and be the same player Or better at 35?!? How in the world am I supposed to do that??
I have NO CLUE. Do I have the consistent will to overcome this thing? Maybe I should break out the rocking chair and reminisce on the career that
was. Maybe this is how my book ends. Maybe Father Time has defeated me…Then again maybe not! It’s 3:30am, my foot feels like dead weight, my head is spinning from the pain meds and I’m wide awake. Forgive my Venting but what’s the purpose of social media if I won’t bring it to you Real No Image?? Feels good to vent, let it out. To feel as if THIS is the WORST thing EVER! Because After ALL the venting, a real perspective sets in. There are far greater issues/challenges in the world then a torn achilles. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, find the silver lining and get to work with the same belief, same drive and same conviction as ever.
One day, the beginning of a new career journey will commence. Today is NOT that day.
“If you see me in a fight with a bear, prey for the bear”. I’ve always loved that quote. That’s “mamba mentality” we don’t quit, we don’t cower, we don’t run. We endure and conquer.
I know it’s a long post but I’m Facebook Venting LOL. Maybe now I can actually get some sleep and be excited for surgery tomorrow. First step of a new challenge.
Guess I will be Coach Vino the rest of this season. I have faith in my teammates. They will come thru.
Thank you for all your prayers and support. Much Love Always.
Mamba Out

When conversations pop up about the greatest point guards to ever play the game, you’ll hear names like John Stockton, Magic Johnson, Steve Nash, Bob Cousy, Isaiah Thomas and Oscar Robertson. But on that list as well, amongst those greats, is a trash-talking, defensive stud who could burn you on either end of the floor.

His name is Gary Payton. On Monday morning, the nine-time NBA All Star was elected to the Hall of Fame.

It should come as no surprise that Payton made it to the Hall in his first year of eligibility. The long time Supersonic is the only point guard to ever win the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award (1996) and he made the league’s All-Defensive First Team a whopping nine times as well. Payton also won a championship with the Miami Heat in 2006 after stints with the Celtics, Lakers and Bucks. He also claimed a pair of gold medals with Team USA at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.

But it was his time in Seattle — 12.5 years — where Payton made his mark on the game and entrenched his spot in the history books.

“He’s one of the toughest guys, mentally and physically, that I’ve ever been around”, said Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey who served as an assistant coach to George Karl in Seattle from 1994-2005, Payton’s prime years with the Sonics. “Everybody talks about Kobe (Bryant) being a winner and a competitor, well being around Gary every day was unbelievable as far as how competitive he was.”

Over the 10-year span “The Glove” and Casey were together, Payton only missed a mind-boggling four games. That’s it.

“He was there every night; injured, hurt, or bad ankle. Whatever it was,” Casey said. “Gary was a competitor and back in his prime he was one of the best defenders – one-on-one — I’ve ever been around.”

During his 17 years in the Association, Payton missed only 27 games. His durability and will to win was simply incredible according to Casey.

“He was wiry strong and tough-minded,” he said. “Most of all, he was a winner. I think we average about 50 wins per year during our time in Seattle. He would compete and play hurt. He would play through (it all).”

Payton averaged 16.3 points, 6.7 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals over the course of his career, totals that were nearly matched in very category during his 15 years in the post-season as well. The Oakland, Calif. native scored over 21,000 points and tallied just under 9000 assists too, and when he retired in 2007, he was the only point guard in NBA history to tally 20,000 points, 8000 assists, 5000 rebounds, and 2000 steals in a career.

“He wasn’t a great shooter,” Casey said. “He was a scorer more-so than a shooter. He was left-handed but he shot with his right hand. He got a lot of left-handed scoop lay-ups because become forgot that he was left-handed. And he would get a lot of points off his defence. In pick-and-roll situations he would get to the rim and get to the basket and became a better shooter the older he got.”

He also became more of a leader as he got older — and he mellowed out a bit too. He was still brash and could jaw-jack with the best of them, but the image of the trash-talking, cocky kid that came into the league was replaced with one of the talkative, experienced veteran.

“Gary had a way of getting on guys,” Casey said. “We would tell young players to not listen to how he says it and the cuss words he uses around it. Listen to the content of what he’s saying because the message is very important.”

Payton, along with the rest of the Class of 2013, will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Face during a ceremony on Sept. 8.

The NCAA tournament is about to tip off and with that in mind, here are Eric’s Elite Eight:

1. How big is this tournament for Kelly Olynyk? Either way, the Canadian big man is getting drafted in the first round but with a solid showing (and there’s no reason to think he and Gonzaga won’t do well) he should easily vault himself into “Top 10″ conversations. His stock could only rise higher when the pre-draft workouts begin with teams around the NBA in May and June.

2. A possible showdown between Tom Izzo and Coach K is in the crosshairs in the Midwest Region. If that goes down, call it a tournament. Michigan State against Duke, in the Hoosier State, may as well be the Final.

3. With anywhere from 10-15 teams having a legit shot at winning the whole thing, there’s probably been no better year to invoke the Lisa Simpson game-selection process: Badgers mauling Cardinals and Hurricanes sweeping away Buffaloes and the like.

4. Is this the year — as my Raptors broadcast partner, Paul Jones, says all the time – when the players across the nation finally flip the script on the NCAA and walk out? I doubt it. But it would be great to see one day; kids getting their due after years of the collegiate association — and the schools themselves — making money off the athletes without the players seeing a cent of the profits.

5. Side note: if I could change one rule about the NCAA (aside from those related to the issue I just addressed above) it would be to place bigger restrictions on coaches moving from team to team and school to school. If a player has to redshirt to switch programs, perhaps a coach should have to sit out a year too.

6. The song One Shining Moment has had one too many moments. It’s time to do away with that tune and move in a new direction. Just make sure it’s not One Direction.

7. I wanted to take VCU all the way to the Final Four but, assuming there were no upsets, I just couldn’t see Sherman Hamilton’s alma mater getting through Michigan, Kansas, and Florida to make it that far.

8. If anybody at your office or in your group of friends tries to tell you that they knew how the bracket would unfold — they try to act like a genius when two or three of their Final Four predictions actually come to fruition — feel free to walk away and ignore the idiocy. The human element of sports trumps any and all experts … ESPECIALLY in a one-and-done tournament like March Madness. No margin for error.

And just for good measure, here are eight more quick hits:

1.	First No. 1 seed to fall: Gonzaga
2.	Biggest upset(s): All three are 11 vs. 6. Belmont over Arizona. Bucknell over Bulter. Minnesota over UCLA.
3.	Best conference in the tournament: Big Ten.
4.	Toughest region: South.
5.	Barack-etology: President Obama has Indiana winning it all.
6.	Prime Picks: I haven’t heard who Prime Minister Harper is going with; I think he’s still trying to find the Naismith Cup for future Raptors/Grizzlies battles. So I’ll fill in for the Right Honourable one and go with: Indiana over Wisconsin.
7.	The other Canadian: Olynyk may be stealing the headlines but UNLV’s Anthony Bennett is an NBA top-10 pick too.
8.	Raptor Rights: Bragging rights in T.O. include: Kyle Lowry (Villanova), Linas Kleiza (Missouri), John Lucas (Oklahoma State), Alan Anderson (Michigan State) and Aaron Gray (Pittsburgh).

Has Miami Heat forward LeBron James legitimately entered the discussion over who is the greatest NBA player of all time?

The post Smith on NBA: James vs. Jordan appeared first on Sportsnet.ca.

Questions like the one I am about to ask don’t really have a right or wrong answer. Debates and discussions are born from questions like these but resolutions never follow; only more opinion and chatter.

Who is the greatest of all time?

Gretzky, Orr, Lemieux or Howe?
Montana, Payton, Brown or Rice?
Mays, Ruth, Bonds or Aaron?
Russell, Johnson. Jordan or James?

Yes, James — as in LeBron James — is already on that best-of-the-best list. In fact, the argument can be made that he has surpassed nearly everyone who has come before him.

Fresh off his first championship title last June, James is blistering the NBA this season with some mindboggling numbers. He is averaging 27 points-per-game on a whopping 56.2 percent from the floor. It’s his fourth-straight season of 50+ per cent shooting. Throw in a career-best 8.1 rebounds per game to go with 6.9 assists a contest and your head starts spinning.

He is currently on a run of five-straight games with 30 or more points and over his last four games he is shooting 73.7 per cent from the field.

Just how good is this guy?

“If there are (any flaws), they’re not apparent,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey recently told me. “We’ve tried every defence in the world (in Dallas and Toronto) on him. He exposes you. You double-team him; he exposes you. With his size, strength, and quickness, he’s one of the best athletes in the NBA. He’s the best player in the NBA today and (the best) going back over the years to Michael Jordan.”

Casey is right in every way.

There are no flaws. LeBron, arguably, can play all five positions on the floor. He has the passing skills and decision-making of a point guard, the speed, ball-handling, mid-range (and perimeter), and explosiveness of a wing, and the size, strength, rebounding and post-presence of a top-line big man.

Simply put, James has it all and he has the ring now too … finally winning one in his third career Finals appearance.

Granted, Jordan needs both hands to show off his jewelry, but James isn’t done yet. He’s only 28 years old. The Heat star could conceivably be playing in the Association for well over another decade and some believe he is just now entering his prime.

He is, physically, a freak of nature: 6’8″, 250-pounds; agile and aggressive … fluid and forceful. He battles double- and triple-teams on a consistent basis while facing the best defenders and most physical play the opposition can throw out at him every single night. He’s been doing so for 10 years, yet, James has never missed more than seven games in a season.

“Don’t take it for granted,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra recently told reporters in Miami. “He’s making greatness look easy.”

Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell — as great as they were — were men among boys. Without taking a single thing away from their accomplishments, their dominance was skewed to some degree. James is a monster among men. In a league — in a world — where everything and everyone is bigger, faster, and stronger, King James rules the court.

“He’s playing at a level rarely seen,” Lakers guard Steve Nash told ESPN.

During his seven years in Cleveland, James built the Cavaliers into contenders with very little help. He was a Broadway headliner with off-Broadway cast-mates. Now, in Miami, LBJ has his Scottie Pippen (Dwyane Wade). He has his Toni Kukoc or Dennis Rodman or Horace Grant too (Chris Bosh). James has all of the weapons that Jordan did — and more. It’s all about the rings now.

There’s no doubt, as the column (and numbers) state, LeBron is in the conversation. He is already one of the best ever but there’s also no doubt — as the following chart clearly shows — that Jordan has him beat (for now) big time.

One man's take on who should be representing the Eastern and Western Conferences at the NBA all-star game.

The NBA will announce its All-Star reserves (as chosen by the coaches) at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday night.

In advance of the announcement, here are my selections:

Western Conference

James Harden, Houston Rockets — He’s not only an All-Star but an MVP candidate as well. He has risen to the challenge of becoming a ‘franchise guy’.

Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder — Do I need to explain?

Marc Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies — This was a toss-up. I could have easily gone with teammate Zach Randolph but Gasol is the best defensive center in the NBA.

Tim Duncan, San Antonio Spurs — A complete no-brainer. He has found the fountain of youth and looks as good as he ever has.

David Lee, Golden State Warriors — Raise your hand if you saw the Warriors being this good this year? Lee is a massive reason for Golden State’s stellar season.

Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors – See above.

Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs — Though not as old as Duncan, the same adage applies; as he ages he only gets better. He may get lost in the hype of some of the younger guards but Parker is still one of the elite point guards in the NBA.

Snubs — LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland Trail Blazaers; Serge Ibaka, Oklahoma City Thunder; Al Jefferson, Utah Jazz; Damian Lillard, Portland Trail Blazers; Zach Randolph, Memphis Grizzlies.

Eastern Conference

Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers — It’s rare for me to totally ignore a team’s record and solely look at the individual but in this case I have to. Irving is so dynamic and special. The Cavs have a superstar-in-the-making.

Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia 76ers — Considering where Philly is (still in the post-season hunt) without a single game from Andrew Bynum, Holiday deserves to put in the showcase.

Tyson Chandler, New York Knicks — He should be starting.

Brook Lopez, Brooklyn Nets — The biggest reason for the Nets turn-around; more-so than P.J. Carlesimo vs. Avery Johnson, or Deron Williams or Joe Johnson.

Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls — Another toss-up: Noah or his teammate, Carlos Boozer? One of them has to make it considering how well the Bulls have played without Derrick Rose. Noah, to me, does more on both ends.

Paul George, Indiana Pacers — He may have been an All-Star even if Danny Granger hadn’t gone down with injury. George’s star was already rising. But with few options in Indy, the youngster stepped up and carried this team (along with Roy Hibbert and David West) to a highly-successful first half of the season.

Chris Bosh, Miami Heat — Bosh is my bubble pick. The list of ‘snubs’ below made CB’s selection very difficult but it is hard to ignore the impact he has on the Heat; his still-solid contributions get lost in the shadows of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

Snubs — Paul Pierce, Boston Celtics; Deron Williams, Brooklyn Nets; Joe Johnson, Brooklyn Nets; David West, Indiana Pacers; Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee Bucks; Al Horford, Atlanta Hawks; Carlos Boozer, Chicago Bulls.
