The RAY TYE MEDICAL AID FOUNDATION is honored to have been a part of this.

In Guatemala, when Esteban was 3yrs old, he wandered into a room where his aunt was completing a science project for school. With his toddler curiosity he couldn’t resist sampling one of the bottles and moments later his mother heard screams. He was rushed to the local emergency room where he was stabilized but nothing could be done for his esophagus which was now severely scarred.

The CareWays Collaborative Team traveled to Guatemala to provide life changing surgery for Esteban who is now 6 years old.

Esteban’s operation was a major one, an 11-hour surgery with 13-hours of anesthesia. Before this procedure, he had been unable to eat, drink, or even swallow his own saliva for nearly three years. The surgery was very complex and it simply would not have been possible in Guatemala without the specialized equipment that The Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation helped provide.

The following was in an email from a member of the CareWays Collaborative team:

“Because of your generosity, two extraordinary surgeons were able to come together, equipped with the right tools, to give Esteban a real chance at a future where he can eat, grow, and live without the constant limitations he has known for so long. He is now recovering, doing well, and surrounded by hope, something his family has been holding onto for years.”

Marique was born in Antigua with Down’s Syndrome and with 2 holes in her heart. The following is a beautiful message from her mom:

When I first met with the doctors in Antigua and they told me World Pediatrics may be able to help my baby with the surgery she needed, I was extremely happy about the news and the possibility of surgery. I was also extremely fearful of the complication of this type of surgery
and Marique’s diagnosis. But as a Mother, knew this was an opportunity that I had to take for my baby girl.

Throughout the journey of being in the United States, before and the day of the surgery, I felt even more scared. I didn’t know what could happen, the possibilities or outcomes of this procedure. Having the reassurance of the doctors helped, but the unknown is a scary thing.
When I saw her after surgery, I was very emotional. I would have never imagined seeing my baby, my daughter hooked up to the many tubes and machines, but day after day I had this sense of “Marique needs me” and I need to be brave for my baby.

So, I put my fears to the back burner and moved forward with encouraging her – speaking positively, distracting her, making her smile. It was mostly for her, but I think also for myself. And that’s what I did, and this is where we are now. My baby is healthy, happy, moving and
growing. I am at ease knowing she is well and healthy, and it would not have been made possible without the help of the Ray Tye Foundation … so thank you thank you.

He was finally diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor the size of an orange. Everyone was shocked at the size of his tumor when he arrived for treatment.

Surgery was necessary to prevent further impact on his brain and to lessen or end his seizures. The surgeon laid out the risks associated with removing the tumor, such as paralysis of his leg, arm and side of his face. When the nurse asked mom how she was feeling about the surgery Martisa said “The Good Lord will guide the surgeon’s hands”.

The doctors were able to successfully remove the entire tumor and his mom was immediately relieved when he woke up and could move all of his extremities. His last seizure was when he was boarding the plane to come to the U.S. and since the surgery he has been seizure free.

Together with World Pediatrics, The Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation finally gave this child and mother the hope they had been waiting for.

Thank you, Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation, for giving this boy the opportunity of a lifetime. His mother and father and two sisters could not be more grateful for your kindness and generosity.

Her mom shared that as an infant Ginelly had urology issues and had been in and out of the hospital several times. The doctors at the clinics she attended didn’t have any other help to offer aside from giving her antibiotics for her multiple urinary tract infections. Due to continuous pain and fevers, she eventually had to stop going to school.

Ginelly’s mother spent sleepless nights watching her daughter’s condition worsen and praying for help
Fortunately, someone in her village told her about World Pediatrics and their global network and was able to guide her family into obtaining the tests needed to diagnose her condition. After several tests and an MRI, it was confirmed that Ginelly was in dire need of surgery. Without help she would be at risk of irreversible damage to her kidneys. The surgery necessitated highly specialized equipment and the experience of a pediatric urologist only available at a private hospital at an unaffordable cost to the family.

Ginelly’s dad also had five other children to support. Hiss salary as a truck driver could never cover the high cost of the specialized care needed.

Thankfully, with the financial support of the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation, Ginelly had her life-changing surgery, relieving the obstruction to her kidneys and her pain. She is back to school and back to being a carefree kid again!

Ten years ago at age 39 my world unexpectedly changed course. During a physical exam for a job that I was applying for I learned that a heart defect I was born with would most likely shorten my life expectancy to about age 47.

Prior to that day I had enjoyed a full life in Manchester, New Hampshire. I fished, went boating, and rode motorcycles. I was surrounded by loving family and great friends.

I did not get the job due to my condition and with no health insurance I had nowhere to turn for help. Tufts Medical Center in Boston suggested the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation. I had to have my application in Wednesday by 3:30 (I still don’t know why), and by Thursday afternoon the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation had responded and agreed to pay for the heart surgery PLUS a pacemaker that saved my life! I remember the joy of getting that lifesaving phone call. IT’S A BLESSING!

Since then I have lived a full and meaningful life. I’ve been with the same woman for 8 years. I work 40 hours a week at a job that I enjoy and I still do all my activities that I love!

I am forever grateful to the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation for the financial support and to Tufts New England Medical Center and the gifted doctors I’ve met along the way. I look forward to a long and healthy life.

Doug has done amazingly well over the years. I was involved with his care at Tufts, and remain involved at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center!

Doug continues to lead an active, prosperous, wonderful life since his surgery. Thanks to the Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation, Doug has benefited greatly.”

Freddy is our miracle boy and The Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation made our miracle in Boston possible.

Freddy suffered cardiac arrest when he was just 4 months old. We took him to a leading cardiac center in the UK but they had not seen his condition before. Freddy was diagnosed with a cardiac tumor, a huge left ventricular fibroma, so rare there were only 200 cases reported worldwide. He was placed in an induced coma and they said we should prepare ourselves—he was unlikely to survive. We were told that if he did wake up he wouldn’t be the baby we once knew

As our hearts were breaking our first miracle happened. After 3 days Freddy woke up and smiled. Our baby was fighting back! We took Freddy home since there was no clear treatment path, but within weeks we were back in hospital after further life-threatening heart rhythms. we agreed to have an internal Defibrillator placed in Freddy’s abdomen to keep him safe. Freddy started taking medication 6 times a day to try and stop any further arrhythmias. By May of 2017 many other medications were tried but nothing worked. We were out of options; we had to find a way to treat the cause, not just the symptoms. We knew we had to seek treatment outside of the UK.

We found Boston Children’s Hospital and Dr. Del Nido. Boston Children’s is the only center in the world that has a cardiac tumor programme with a 100% success rate for babies with Freddy’s condition.

Dr. Del Nido reviewed Freddy’s data and told us he could help. When the closing line of his letter said “this treatment has a high probability to be a cure for this child”, we knew we had to get Freddy to Boston.

Our next Miracle came in the shape of The Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation. We found each other, out there in the universe over 3,000 miles apart, and they told us they would help save our darling boy.

In January 2018 we travelled to Boston for Freddy’s life-saving surgery. After 6 weeks in the city of miracles our boy was cured. Dr. Del Nido and his team removed the tumor and the internal defibrillator. The impossible was performed and our miracle son is healthy.

Who knows what the future may have held for Freddy, if he had a future at all. The UK could only offer us a heart transplant, a life-limiting treatment path at best. But the love and support of The Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation brought us a lifetime with Freddy, for which we are eternally grateful. We are part of the Ray Tye family now—XXX.

Children are the gems of their families everywhere in the world!

Like so many children, Carolina and Ana Sophia were born with life-threatening medical conditions and no access to adequate care in their home country. Thanks to your donation, we are able to help children like them gain access to life-saving care. These patients’ journeys to care are not only life-saving but also life-changing for the people surrounding them. Children get a second chance at life and parents get a second chance at parenthood. As they go through these stressful changes, these children share their joy and kindness with all those around them. As we get to know each of the patients and their families whom you have helped and whose journey you have shared, they become a blessing in our lives.

You, together with the WPP family of pediatric specialists, partner hospitals, medical supply companies and many others, help Carolina and Ana Sophia, along with thousands of other children with critical medical conditions, regain the opportunity for full, productive lives. Because of the life-changing, and often life-saving nature of medical care, this journey becomes personal for all involved.

Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation family – you are now forever a part of Carolina and Ana Sophia’s lives, as well as their healing journeys. We thank you for your generosity and welcome you to the World Pediatric Project family.
