"Did Christ Descend into hell?"

2008-06-26T11:22:00.000-07:00

This question was brought up in class last Sunday and it was something that I recall knowing but could not validate it with any biblical scripture. So I decided to look into it and after talking to some people, reading the bible, and reading Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology book this is what I found.

The phrase "he descended into hell" is not found in the Bible but is found in the Apostles Creed. The Apostles Creed was a Creed that took shape from A.D. 200 to 750 but this phrase was not included explicitly until A.D. 650. This phrase at that time didn't have the same meaning that we would think of it having today. At that time it meant that Christ was "buried" or in another way "he descended into the grave." (The Greek form has hades, which can mean just "grave", not geenna, "hell", place of punishment.")

There are verses that are used to support the phrase "he descended into hell," primarily Acts 2:27, Romans 10:6-7, Ephesian 4:8-9, 1 Peter 3:18-20, and 1 Peter 4:6. After reading these, none of them seem to support this phrase. Other interpretations seem to reflect more accurately the meaning of each passage rather than the idea that Jesus descended into hell after his death. One clear biblical verse that contradicts this idea of Jesus descending into hell is Luke 23:43 when Jesus is talking to the thief on the cross and says "Today you will be with me in Paradise." Jesus implies in this verse that his soul (spirit) will immediately go to be with the Father. This would mean that Jesus was not going to hell but to the Father.

Please comment or chat with me on this if you have a questions. If there are question I will be sure to look into them and try and provide an answer for the class.

Verse Memorization

2007-10-24T08:35:00.001-07:00

This week's winner for the memory verse was SHELLI GAGE!

Memory Verse Winner is...

2007-10-08T13:21:00.001-07:00

Laura Groff is this weeks winner of the Memory Verse.

The Winner for this week is...

2007-10-01T15:47:00.001-07:00

MIKE MORTER won a copy of "A Sinner's Guide to Holiness" by John Chapman and a gift card to Cold Stone Creamery.

A note from Pastor Steve...

2007-09-24T10:12:00.001-07:00

Since the verses this week are a little more unfamiliar, and probably a little more difficult to memorize, here is an EXTRA INCENTIVE to memorize Titus 2:11-13. I am not going to say what it is, but those who memorize this week's verses will have the opportunity to win a SPECIAL PRIZE in addition to the book, A Sinner's Guide to Holiness by John Chapman. This extra prize is NOT a book.

Hopefully, this will sweeten the deal sufficiently to encourage more people in the class to take the challenge to hide God's word in their hearts. If this proves to be an effective inducement, we will probably do it again. Not every week, but on occasion.

One other thing; I MUST have the names of those who will commit to memorizing the verses and be entered in the drawing BEFORE Sunday morning. So, email me or call me or see me in person to let me know ahead of time.

Pastor Steve

P.S. Class, one more thing. Here is a really special inducement to get more class members to accept the challenge to memorize Scripture. For the last four weeks of our study in "Just for Starters," here is a special challenge with a special prize. IF there are at least five class members who memorize the weekly Scripture each week, there will be a chance for someone to win an extra extra prize at the end of the study. Again, IF there are at least five class members who memorize the verse(s) for that week, then at the end of the study everyone who memorized all the verses for the last four studies will have their names placed in the drawing for an extra special prize. I'm not going to tell you what the prize is, but I believe it will be worth the effort of memorizing these verses. SO, IS THIS CLASS UP TO THE CHALLENGE?

Current Book Winners...

2007-09-24T10:00:00.000-07:00

The book for memorizing Romans 5:8-9 is The Cross of Christ By John R. W. Stott. The winner of the drawing was....SARAH ROLSTON.

The book for memorizing Ephesians 2:8-9 is Transforming Grace by Jerry Bridges. The winner of the drawing was....JUSTIN ROLSTON.
