Okay, here we go. For the next 3 Friday's, we'll be sharing some ideas and photos on the "Moms in the Big O" blog! If you didn't make the deadline, send your unique photo to RealMomsofOwensboro@hotmail.com and your photo may be added to this blog post.
Do you have an Elf in your house?

The idea is that the Elf flies back to the North Pole each night to tell Santa how the little boys and girls in your house behaved that day. If they're naughty, he stays put. If they're nice, he flies to Santa, then back in time to find a cool hiding spot for the kiddos to find each morning. He's magic...if you touch him he just may lose those magical powers!
If you're on Pinterest, you have probably seen some unique ideas to come up with as to wear the Elf hides each night. Below are some of the ideas we've found from Real Mom's.
For safetly, we've decided to omit the owner's of these Elves since the photos are taken inside of homes in the Owensboro area. If you would like your name next to your idea, just send us an email and we'll be glad to give credit where credit is due!

These ideas are great and I hope everyone is having fun thinking of new ways to make their kiddos smile each morning! Here are some additional ideas:

-white powdered doughnuts (snow covered) that the Elf brings for breakfast
-wrap your Christmas tree in toilet paper and allow for Elf to hold the cardboard roll as "evidence"
-place the Elf in the driver's seat with the seatbelt on (move car to an unusual spot too if you can swing it!)
-write a note from Santa using this stationary from Celebrations at Home

Party On, Monday is BACK! We have several parties to feature and we're always looking for more to share!
Monica submitted this AWESOME party idea: An Army Party! She used Paint on her computer to find these PERFECT invitations:

As you can see, the party took place at Yellow Creek Park in Owensboro. She says, "The kids loved running around the pioneer village in the back and we had an obstacle course and search & destroy game(find the hidden water balloons and bust them). Each kid had to sign in to report for duty and grab their dog tags and goody bag filled with Army supplies. We did the activities then the kids got to eat their MRE's(lunchables), Red Army Bullets(BBQ smokies), Melon Bombs(Watermelon balls), Army Rations(Veggie Tray), Swamp Water(Colored Water & Tea), Tank cake, and Camouflage cupcakes."

Way to go Monica!!!

Monica visited the Army recruiting office on Southtown Blvd. to see if they had any materials they weren'tusing (or that she could borrow). She left with boxes of items to use as party decor and favors.

Party On, Monday: Baseball "Sprinkle"

This week, we have a Baby Sprinkle. My Baby Sprinkle.
What's a Sprinkle?
Well, it's a "small" baby shower. It's PERFECT for Mom's who have had a baby before!
My friend ~~Martha Stewart~~ Taryn told me the day I was having baby #2 that she was going to have a "Sprinkle" for me. When I texted her from the ultrasound room that it was another BOY, I'm pretty sure she started planning this Baseball shin-dig immediately.
I'm ashamed that this is al the pictures I can find at this time, however you can see the details and maybe get some ideas for inspiration!
Baseball food goes with baseball, so she grilled hot dogs and we decorated them with an assortment of toppings. We had other baseball themed foods such as cracker jacks and popcorn too. She really knows how to make a friend feel good!

Review: My Smart Hands...They LOVE to sign!

I think communication is so important and finding ways to express oneself in a positive way is key. A few weeks ago while my little man, John Burton, and I were working at the BEST gift shop in town (shameless plug)...The Crowne Gifts and Events, a downtown friend of ours stopped in to get a few gifts and check up on “the Manager”.

While we were discussing how fast John Burton is growing, he’s the big 0-N-E now, I mentioned the fun activities he was involved in including baby sign language. Now, this friend is a bit older than me (meaning her children are my age), so she was very polite when I told her about sign language, but I think she could only contain herself so long before she nicely and skeptically (this can happen at the same time) asked me, “Why?” This was a valid question. Her children had never had the opportunity for baby sign language and they turned out great, so she wanted to know why I would add this extra-curricular to John Burton’s schedule.

First of all, we (my husband John and I) love to give John Burton all of the advantages in life that we can afford. I had heard such great things about sign language and even how it helps boys be less aggressive because they can communicate when they haven’t learned the words to speak. In researching baby sign language benefits, I found many websites including www.babies-and-sign-language.com that listed some key benefits:

1. Baby Sign Language increases the speed of the development of

verbal language.

2. Baby signing increases vocabulary.

3. Baby signing reinforces the use of verbal language.

4. Baby Sign Language promotes language learning through concept.

5. Baby Signing reinforces a child’s communication attempts.

6. Baby Sign Language promotes early literacy.

7. Baby Sign Language increases interests in books.

8. Baby Signing promotes the early use of complex sentences.

Of course sites that promote baby sign language are more than likely going to promote the benefits of signing, but if these things were possible and all I had to do was take John Burton to learn some signs, I was on board!

Through the power of facebook, we heard about Simply Speaking and their baby sign language, My Smart Hands. The girls with Simply Speaking (Trina and Jill) are WONDERFUL and very accommodating with our crazy schedule. Since we own Gambrinus, our weekends are Sunday and Monday. They worked out a Monday night class that was perfect.

Now, if there was a hidden camera at Simply Speaking I’m sure it would look hilarious to an outsider. You would see four to six parents sitting on the floor in a circle signing and singing about letters, feelings, wet diapers, airplanes, and snacks while four little ones are playing with toys and taking breaks to join their ‘silly’ parents as they make movements with their hands and dance to the music. When you are actually in the class though, it is very fun, informative, and relaxed. John Burton’s two good buddies,

Dominic and Miles, are from our class and John and I have even become great friends with their parents!

After our first class, my husband and I (who have both never learned any sign language) had learned a TON! The lessons are presented with music which makes the connection of signing better for memory. The songs are fun and catchy too! Basically anyone who knows John Burton knows the “Milk and Cookie” song (officially known as Snack Rap) and as silly as it sounds, it helps them learn a few signs too. My mom told me she was driving home and the song worm in her ear was “Milk and Cookies, Milk, Milk, and Cookies...You’ll have to go to class to learn the rest). I have even noticed that people love to try new signs with John Burton as a way to communicate more with him. I mean, what would we give to know what our little ones are thinking before they can actually verbalize?!

So, back to John Burton’s signing... after our first class and how much we had learned, we knew John Burton loved the music, but we decided we would not put too much pressure on whether he really learned signs because at least he was getting to interact with other babies. Some of our ‘homework’ was to pick a few words to use with John Burton daily and sign to him whether he signed back or not. It didn’t take long and our little ‘genius’ was signing “finished”. We were so excited! We continued to go to class and sign daily. It wasn’t hard, anytime we told him something that we knew a sign for we would sign.

Now, after My Smart Hands Level One and halfway through Level Two, John Burton is successful at signing: finished, Papa/Grandpa-(his FAVORITE sign), eat, more, please, bath, bye, thank you, airplane, and stop. Those signs he signs consistently, but he recognizes even more when we sign to him. He loves the music from the class so much that I have added it on my phone to play in the car when we drive. It is like he remembers how much he loves going to class and the ‘warm fuzzies’ from that make him so mellow and happy when he’s listening. We can even catch him moving his hands to the songs like he knows there is a sign that he should be doing:)

At only thirteen months old, he is also starting to say words all of the time. He can say: high chair, hat, Batman (his favorite), chair, bye bye, eat, yes, apple, and push. John Burton also loves books and words. There are many books out there that have words we have used in class, like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, so we can read and sign.

I think that his exposure to sign language has aided in his language development and I can’t wait to see how much more he progresses!

So, yes, we grew up not taking baby sign language and we are fine, but how much more advanced could we be? How many more languages could we have learned and learned easier because sign language helped to unlock that portion of our brains? It will be an adventure to see how much John Burton’s sign language grows to help him communicate with us while expanding his verbal vocabulary and we owe it to the wonderful girls at Simply Speaking! I highly recommend you take your kiddos, whether under one or even four or five or more and take advantage of this quick and effective course in sign language.

It Works!
It really does!
I lost 2 inches this week--2 inches from just one of my "target zones". My waist.
And, for those of you who attended Mom's Night Out at Gambrinus on Tuesday night, you got to find out how! If you missed it, here's your chance to redeem yourself!
This is what intrigued me:

Pictures. What can I say. I like proof. These pictures...they're proof to me!
Jasmin Embers actually wrapped me on Tuesday night. Yes, I was wrapped in the restroom of Gambrinus!
She measured me with a tape measurer so I could have my "proof", and then she placed the patch on my tummy. She talked me through the entire process and showed me everything she was doing so that in the future I can wrap myself. If I wouldn't have shown people (or told them that I was all wrapped up), this could easily have been a secret. This little magic wrap felt like Icy Hot on my stomach. It actually felt good!
45 mintues later, the wrap came off. Jasmin measured me again and...I lost OVER 1 inch.
She told me the wrap would work for an additional 72 hours. What??? You don't have to wear it for 72 hours, it just continues to work!
I was obsessed with the string I had been given to measure myself last week. I carried it in my purse actually. And, I lost 2 INCHES at the end of my 72 hours. 2 INCHES!!!
And, I even waited an additional 48 hours to see if those 2 inches came back and they haven't!
So, I emailed Jasmin some more questions...

Baby Sign Language: My Smart Hands Classes

Baby sign language is signed English taken from American Sign Language. Simple, easy, practical and fun! You probably have heard of baby sign language from one of your friends.

Taking a class to learn some new signs, singing songs and meeting new moms is the new and hip thing that parents are doing today with their hearing babies. But why teach babies to sign? The main reason baby sign language has become so popular is because it decreases baby’s frustration and alleviates temper tantrums as they are able to communicate his/ her wants before using their spoken language. Instead of playing a guessing game and building your frustration level, imagine teaching your wee-one the signs for milk, more, finished, or sleep. Sign language is a fun gift you can give your child.
Does sign language affect my baby’s language development? This is often the first asked question of curious parents. 100% absolutely not, studies have shown that sign language will only accelerate the development of a child’s language. When signing with your baby make sure to continue talking to them so that they maintain a decent exposure to both the verbal and signed languages. Teaching baby’s sign language will help bridge the gap of communication until they are able to talk and provide them with a more extensive vocabulary. It is best to teach babies to sign between the ages of 6-12 months. Many babies are seen producing their first sign before their first birthday. Today, many day-cares and preschools are taking on this fun way of communicating in their daily schedule because they are seeing the benefits from its use. Toddlers pick it up extremely fast, and they love singing their favorite songs with a few signs sprinkled throughout.
With the magic of sign language, you’re bound to hear less tears, see less food fly across the room, understand when you’re child is tired and learn something new along the way. What could be better than that?

The banner was going to be on a string like a real banner but transporting it to U-Bounce was going to cause all kinds of havoc I didn't want to deal with. So, I cut the letters but saved time and didn't punch the slots for ribbon. We used Mavius Tape to tape the letters created by Dimpleprints.

Ace Man had a rough first 1/2 of the party. He is getting his top AND bottom molars in. He was diagnosed with his 12th ear infection 2 days before the party too (ENT appt. Scheduled for next week...it's tube time for Acey). So, until he was fed popcorn and cake, he looked like this:

To say he was not happy would be an understatement. He was miserable. I forgot teething med's (bad Mom, I know...) and tylenol (kind of preoccupied with party stuff, geeez). But after we were able to cool down in the party room he was fine. He was content. All was right in the world because he had...POPCORN!
It couldn't have came at a better time. Ace Man LOVES popcorn.

We found the way to his pe-piken' heart. Puffcorn. Just shove it in there and he's a happy camper! Hat by Goldenshop.

(You can see them in each of our pictures) They all were the Superman Logo with our names in them because we're all Super. I mean really, it takes a village to raise a child and we couldn't it without them! These were from IMCreations.

U-Bounce was THE PERFECT place to celebrate our little Ace Man. They served (and even cut) the cake and other foods we served (Superman Ice Cream, duh!), veggies trays, puff-corn popcorn, and PIZZA!
