Kid Friendly Modern Bathroom

Here it is, all the details of How to How to Design a Kid Friendly Modern Bathroom! This DIY was a two step process. The photos below show 2020 vs 2018 vs 2016 (which really could also say 1989.) While this bathroom didn’t need a full remodel like the master, it was sparking zero joy! I broke down some major changes and spent less than $1K, because done is better than perfect. When purchased in 2016 the house needed.some.work!

Initial Kid Friendly Modern Bathroom in 2017

This was my FIRST ever DIY! I figured I would start with the smallest room in the house. The vanity was the first thing I painted with cabinet paint, this is the one I used, however this is now the one I would recommend. When I took down the giant mirror, the wall was not textured (I later learned how to texture.) At the time, putting shiplap up seemed like the best option.

Second Bathroom Refresh in 2020

Then of course, 2020 hit, my style evolved and I was ready to take the bathroom to the next level without doing an entire remodel. While I was content with most of the changes we made in 2017, but was ready to really make things more modern. I still wanted to Design a Kid Friendly Modern Bathroom. I spray painted the light fixture and the shelf hardware matte black. Finally installed towel hooks and a toilet paper holder and said sayonara to the faucet. Of course, everyone’s fav, added SUPER dramatic Floor Pops by @wallpops.

I also upgraded our towels to all white and added some art to the top shelf!

Here it is, all the details of How to How to Design a Modern Master Bathroom Refresh! This DIY was a two step process. The photos below show 2020 vs 2018 vs 2016 (which really could also say 1989.) Naturally the master bath ended up being the last on the to do list both times.

In 2018 to start our Modern Master Bathroom Refresh, we started by removing the 1980’s mirror, light fixture and I installed my first shower door all by myself. As well as painted the vanity with leftover paint from the kitchen. The previous owners attempted to refinish the bathroom vanity, it was originally oak.

I spray painted the light fixture and the shelf hardware matte black. Finally installed towel hooks and a toilet paper holder and said sayonara to the faucets. Ditched the medicine cabinet for a DIY built in and of course, everyone’s fav, added SUPER dramatic Floor Pops by @wallpops.

Winter Onederland Themed Birthday: The Vision of Onederland

Are you looking for the BEST theme for your Winter baby who is about to turn one?! A Winter Onederland Themed Birthday Party is for you! But before we begin, Wow, what a year! I never would have guessed what 2020 would have been like. It started so innocent! January of 2020 I celebrated my daughter’s first birthday, with nothing other than The Best Winter Onederland Themed Birthday Party! We had the most beautiful tree from King of Christmas. It is a white flocked tree, with zero lights and turned out to be the perfect decor for our Winter Onederland!

Having a January baby, I wanted to make her birthday feel special, but still cozy, like a Winter Onederland. I was SOOO thankful that our King of Christmas Tree was able to bring in all the winter vibes, without feeling like Christmas leftovers.

Winter Onederland Decor

For our Winter Onederland Themed Birthday Party, I started with a ballon arch, they have become a birthday tradition in our household. They are super easy and fun to make, plus they give your decor that wow factor! We used these balloons from amazon, I wanted to warm up the Winter with gold tones. I used this balloon arch kit (I did not use the stickers) and then blew the balloons up in multiple sizes. Alternating through all of the color options.

Another tradition that we started when my son was 1, was numerical balloons. (Had no idea they would be so trendy in 2017 LOL!) I also love incorporating our Stendig Wall Art.

Gluten Free Cake

I wanted to keep the cake topper very simple and elegant, continuing with the warm gold. Her cake is Gluten Free of course, our favorite chocolate gluten free cake is from Simple Mills. Their Organic Vanilla Frosting is to die for! I used these tassels for around the high chair. However, I did not use the gold ones, they looked cheap and the gold clashed with everything else I had going on.

This Winter Onederland sign was one of my favorite parts (and so necessary, because not everyone will get the joke without it being right there.) As I mentioned early, we used our large King of Christmas Tree and then I left out a few of our smaller flocked trees from Target! I tried to keep everything as low and at Blake’s level as possible!

I always take family photos on a different day of the party and I highly recommend it! The photos turn out so much better with out the pressure of your guests. Or Grandparents who are trying to help and are just making the situation worse!

I think my daughter is the only One year old to not completely smash her cake and make a mess!

I’m not really sure how I am going to top this for her second Birthday! But we will all find out soon! So if you are looking for the BEST theme for your Winter baby who is about to turn one?! How to Create a Simple Gallery Wall

I have been SOOOO excited to show you all this quick little project. Below you will see what this area looked like before. Let’s just say it stopped sparking joy shortly after it was put up. However, until I split the great room into both a play room and a living room, I didn’t have a vision for this area to change it. Finally, I decided a simple gallery wall was what this room needed.

This area was an eye sore for me for TWO YEARS! I was craving something more modern and knew that I definitely wanted to do a simple gallery wall. Earlier in the year, I started purchasing prints on Etsy and then would get the printed at Mpix! Put them into an IKEA RIBBA frame and I was saving myself hundreds of dollars on frames prints.

You might be asking, Where do I start?!

You will want to start on Etsy! Search terms that go with your decor style. I searched things like, terra cotta digital prints, abstract beige (make sure the word digital print is in there.) Once you find the prints you like, purchase and download!

Then you will want to find the frames that you want to use! Be sure that it is a size the Mpix prints (which most likely will be.) Once you know what size your prints needs to be, upload that scale of photo from your Etsy downloads. Most artists will send you 4-5 scales of the piece, to ensure they are super high quality when printed.

What else can I add to a gallery wall?!

This is the best part! Anything! We used the Ikea Photo Ledge, they are about 3 inches wide. I found some fun shaped vases at IKEA, and painted them to match the art. Don’t forget to decorate all the way to the floor! I moved our entry bench over for these photos, but just put this one, together today!

Transitioning Your Simple Gallery Wall Through the Seasons

This is going to be one of my favorite parts of this area, so versatile! I have prints from Mpix for Christmas and then a new set for 2021 The best part, is you can store additional prints inside the frames, so you don’t have to worry about storing them for next year.

If you have been wondering how to refresh your laundry room?! You have come to the right place! I had so much fun sharing the progress with everyone on Instagram this morning. You can catch the highlight here.

Backstory:

We have been in our home for 4.5 years and one of the first things I did after I gave birth to Liam was take down anything in our home that was an eye sore. The cabinets in our laundry room was one! The other thing that I did, was take out the door that opened into the laundry room. (Or should we call it a hallway with a washer and dryer.) This “room” leads to the garage and the door to the garage also opened inward. SUPER fun to try and get into the house with a baby on your hip, diaper bag and a bag of groceries.

I know you are dying to see that before.. so here it is!

The previous owners painted the cupboard mint green, while leaving the walls and floor tan. Not only were these cupboards horrific, the average person could not reach anything inside of them without a step latter. Plus being a minimalist, there wasn’t much in there anyway!

Let’s Refresh my Laundry Room!

This is what our Laundry Room looked like for 3 years. Our laundry room worked for us, it was great, it was functional, easy to keep clean. But after being home so much in 2020, I decided I want to do something FUN! We enjoyed using the removable wall paper so much for Blake’s room, that I was dying to find another space in the house to design.

I truly can not get enough of this peel and stick wall paper from Rocky Mountain Decals. If you watched my stories on Instagram you saw how easy it was to instal! I did 365 degrees of wall paper and IT. IS. SEAMLESS.

The Laundry Room Refresh Details:

On the three walls around the washer and dryer, I used 6 feet of wall paper, and painted the bottom portion. Partly to save $$$ but also time! I ended up painting the base boards too and it really made for a dramatic touch. This is the barn door I lived without for three years, it is from Costco for about $280 I have seen in for two years in a row now in their wear house only during spring and early summer.

This wooden wall mount from Amazon is less than $60, I used a hard wax to stain it! I used the same hard wax when I made these shelves. These white baskets are from Ikea, there are also some similar ones from target, here.

I highly, HIGHLY, recommend that you refresh you laundry room and I highly, HIGHLY recommend that you incorporate Rocky Mountain Decals, they have SOOO many beautifully designed decals and wall paper!

Removable Wallpaper:

The focal point of her room is definitely the Aztec Wall Paper from Rocky Mountain Decals. We went with a simple, modern and gender neutral wall paper. I was wanting something that could grow with our style and family over time. Plus I was going for a Nursery that Transitions into a Toddler Room!

Nursery that Transitions into a Toddler Room Design Inspo:

What started the Desert Theme in her room (other than my deep love for Plam Springs/Plam Desert and Arizona) were these two prints! They originally had been in the “guest room”. I always try to purchase decor that can easily be moved from room to room.

The Coziest Nursery Corner:

This corner is definitely as cozy as it looks! This rocking chair was found on Craig’s List in 2015 when I was pregnant with my son. I truly loved being able to use it twice! To make the wooden chair a little more cozy, we placed a genuine sheep skin over it. I was really able to channel all of the gender neutral desert vibes with this Copper Pearl Reversible Quilt. We kept the round STOENSE Ikea Rug that had been in the room from when it was my son’s, at $59 this is one of my favorite rugs. Plus being round, it really complements all of the other shapes we have going on in the room.

Close Up:

Giving you a close up of this little corner, one of my absolute favorite pieces to use throughout the house is the FLÅDIS Basket from Ikea! At $9.99 you really cant beat such a versatile piece. We use the FLADIS basket for swaddles (pictured above) shoes, toys etc. In her room we store extra swaddles to help soften up the room. Plus let’s get real, that basket is totally hiding the cord from the salt lamp and floor lamp. All three of the cacti are from Target! I have linked a few that are similar here, here and here. The salt lamp of course is from Evolution Salt Co, and the table is GLADOM from Ikea, at $19.99 you are getting style, function and not breaking the bank. Last but not least, the floor lamp is from Target as well.

Nursery to Toddler Room, Function meets Fashion:

This corner is another favorite, we started with $4.99 Ikea BEKVÄM spice racks, and I actually flipped the hardware on the back of one of them in order to turn it into a shelf to hang. Another Ikea fav is the KUBBIS Rack with 7 hooks, I think we have a total of 4 of them throughout our house. They are super heavy duty and when properly secured to the wall, can hold multiple full backpacks and bags. We also used the Ikea HEMNES 3 drawer chest in white and I substituted these gorgeous Amerock Golden Champaign Knobs. Of course this corner is not complete without a few of our favorites, a custom mobile from Baby Jives, Baby Tula Backpack, and all of the Slumberkins!

This gold mirror from Target has become a staple in our house, I believe we have three! It looks amazing with the knobs that we put on the dressers and the circular shape really contrasts with all of the sharp corners between the wall paper and shelves.

Last but not least, we can’t forget where she sleeps! If you have been around the blog or Instagram for the last 4 years, you know that we have always skipped the crib. We use the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib with a Dock a Tot Grand inside. This set up makes it easy for her to sleep virtually anywhere, because it is what she is use to! Not pictured, is our favorite Lollipop baby monitor!

Okay, my daughter’s room is finally DONE and we used the best peel and stick wallpaper to make it happen! I have been a Mother for over 3 years now and this is the first “baby’s room” we have ever done. Which, let’s get real my style has changed so much since I had my son in 2016, so I am glad we waited! HECK my style has even changed since I was pregnant with my daughte in 2018. I can’t wait to share with you Rocky Mountain Decals Easy to Install Wallpaper! (Don’t worry, it’s even removable, but that won’t be happening anytime soon, because I. AM. IN. LOVE.)

Where to begin!?

There are sooooo many styles to choose from when looking at the best peel and stick wallpaper. A few of my favorites being, Vintage Cactus, Moon Phase, Tarina, Rainbow, and of course Aztec!

After choosing your design, you will want to measure! You can always send your measurements over to Rocky Mountain Decals customer service to ensure you are ordering the proper size and quantity.

What is Peel and Stick Wallpaper install REALLY like?!

Installation was very simple, the first panel was definitely the most difficult. But let’s get real, removing the first brownie from the warm pan is also difficult! Once I got the first panel up, the rest went very smoothly, which is why I call it the best peel and stick wallpaper!

The panels are numbered, so that you know which order that they go in, and everything lines up perfectly! Rocky Mountain Decals also sends you everything that you need, including a tool to help smooth out the paper.

As per the instructions, you start at the top of the wall and make your way down. It is also best to start smoothing in the middle and go to the outside.

If I was to do anything over again, I would have removed/smoothed over the knock down texture on our walls. However, I think they still look great and I will probably be the only one to notice! Rocky Mountain Decals is also very happy to send you a sample, to test on your textured wall if you are concerned.

Ready for your close up?!

Here is a close up of the wall paper! You can tell that when applied properly, it is truly seamless!

We were also impressed with how durable the paper is, as we had to remove and reapply a few times at the beginning.

I was also impressed with how easy it is to wipe off the wall paper to clean!

I am THRILLED with the way my daughter’s room turned out and I can’t imagine loving it nearly as much without our Aztec Rocky Mountain Wall Paper!

Last month we created a Montessori Toddler room for Liam to transition into. You can find that post here. What I did not do, was go into detail on in that post. Including how to create a Montessori Toddler Room!

What is Montessori?

Here is a GREAT explanation of what Montessori is. The simple explanation, is a style of learning that fosters independence. Montessori at home consists of setting your child up to do things on their own. Such as having books and toys at their level. Low furniture, such as their bed that they can get in and out of on their own. Easily accessible hooks for clothing etc.

The Montessori Bed

Yes, Liam does have a King Sized bed. We were gifted a mattress from Purple.com last year. Honestly I went with a King Size bed, off chance I liked it more than our Avocado Mattress. However, having a King size bed has been great for those nights when Liam needs someone to fall asleep with him. I love that it is low enough to the ground that he can climb in and out on his own. I can’t stand those UGLY toddler rails.

We added these great book shelves from Ikea, they are actually a “photo ledge”. His Lollipop Baby Camera is mounted high enough that we can see his entire room. Don’t forget the personalized touch from Shop Love Found.

Shop Love Found was created by a mama who was wanting a minimal and modern birth stat print for her daughter. They have definitely achieved the perfect birth stat and baby name print!

Lighting, Art and Toy Storage

His light fixtures are from Amazon, I loved how simple and modern they are. While they can be turned on and off from the cord, the way Liam’s room is set up, he is able to reach the light switch by the door.

This super fun Highland Cow Print is from Target, I was excited when I was able to find it in store!

Last but not least, don’t forget our favorite SWOOP BAGS! We are able to keep toys out of site and out of mind when we rotate them between being stored in his room and out in our new play room!

Okay! Here is our mini nursery in our master bedroom! Our goal was to create a cute, functional mini nursery that fit perfectly into our master bedroom.

We strive to live as intentional as possible! Our nursery set up is actually a “mini nursery” in our master bedroom! We had a very similar set up for my son, who was in our room until the eve of his first birthday and it worked out perfectly for us!

Why we held off on a traditional nursery:

Instead of setting my daughter up with a room (remember we waited to find out if we were having a boy or a girl, you can read about her birth story here,) that would not be used half year or more, we have incorporated the must have’s of a nursery into our master bedroom.

The Details:

The master bedroom is minimal, modern, but still very cozy! I can’t wait to climb into bed at night. I LOVE house plants, I believe we have a total of 8 in the master bedroom alone. Everything is very simple and calming, either white, gray or made of wood. Gold accents can be found via picture frames, wall hangs and of course our Baby Jives Mobile!

We have a gorgeous handmade Moses basket in a cradle next to our bed. My daughter slept in her Dock a Tot in our bed for the first few months and once she started napping (read more about our nap struggle here) regularly we moved her to the Moses Basket. She is six months old and is still using her Moses Basket.

Here is a breakdown of what you will find:

A large white dresser will be used as a changing table, plus house all of the babies diapers, clothing, moccs, pacifiers, swaddles, and carriers. On top of the dresser, you will find a snake plant (did you know snake plants turn co2 into oxygen at night?!) A salt lamp, essential oil diffuser and of course an organic changing pad & cover.

A 7 peg coat rack to hang our Baby Jives Mobile, rings slings, diapers bags etc

A letter board, well for anything! Right now it says “Oh Baby” LOL

And last but not least a small round mirror, for those middle of the night feeding pep talks. Like “you’ve got this!”

We have been loving our Mini Modern Nursery set up! While I am starting to brain storm her room, I am SOOOOO happy we did a Mini Nursery in our master bedroom!

I have always felt like I get wayyyyyy more sleep than the average mom and since we have had the same set up with both kids, I can’t help but attribute it to our set up!

Now, if you have been around for a couple years, you know I can be as much of a night owl as any other mom. Heck, in 2017 I remodeled my kitchen between the hours of 11pm and 2am. My day would start whenever my son decided it would, and that was just how things were! They were busy but never productive.

I was constantly busy, but never feeling like I got anything done. Sometimes I look back, and my son’s first and even second year of life is a blur.

I decided it was time to make a change, and started waking up for my child, instead of to him, at least most days.

If you are wanting to make a change to better yourself as mother, start getting up early!

You might be thinking, so what will happen if I do this?! Won’t I be MORE tired?! Eh, you might be the first day or two. But you will make it.

I found that when I got the most pressing things done, first thing in the morning, the rest of the day was full of fun and energy!

Whether you working mom or a SHAM, have a side hustle, or work from home. There is a LIST of things you want to get done each day.

It may be a new blog post or client proposal. A basket or two of clean laundry, meal prep, exercise etc. You name it, it’s never too early in the day to get it out of the way!

Because life will come up, your kids will pull you in 1,000 directions. By the end of the day, you cannot always count on getting them done.

Now, I’m not saying go to bed with toys all over your living room and dirty dishes in the sink. Tidying up at the end of the day, will actually be part of the equation for making your morning more successful!

I want to encourage you to hit the sack by 9-10pm. This will still give you 6-8 hours of sleep. With plenty of time to rise before your kiddos do.

I’m typically in bed between 9-10pm, and I’m up anytime between 430-6am. Somedays I will get up before 5am, simply because my mind is up and running or I’m hungry.

Personally, I prefer to not set an alarm. I find it much easier to rise when my sleep cycle is allowing me. Instead of waking up and spiking my cortisol levels (stress hormone) first thing in the morning.

It will take sometime to get use to, the first day will be HARD. But after seeing how beneficial it is to rise well before your kids, you will be ‘uper motivated to do so.

Are you feeling like you need to take your day by the horns?! Wanting to add more discipline to your life, but not sure where to start?!

You have come to the right place, hang tight, I’m going to walk you through it!

The first thing I do, obs, is make coffee! We do not have a coffee pot (yuck!) so I boil water and get my pour over ready.

Actually JK the first thing I do is brush my teeth! this prevents the bacteria in your mouth from sleeping to head back into your body and damage your gut health. 

While the water boils,  the second thing I do is, set the scene. (This is when you will be VERY thankful that your living room is tidy and there are no dirty dishes in the sink.) I turn on a lamp, fill my essential oil diffuser, crank up the heater and arrange where I want to sit. I typically like to sit on the floor and support my back with a pouf or the couch.

Third, after my coffee is ready, I fill my 40oz hydroflask with water and a few ice cubes (my goal is to drink 40oz by the time my son is awake.) I grab a notebook, pen, my beverages and ground myself on the floor. (If I wake up hungry, I will have a piece of fruit or a bowl of instant oatmeal to get me by until I make breakfast.) 

Next, (for those of you counting, fourth)  I take a few deep breathes, really enjoy the first few sips of my coffee and close my eyes.

Typically while my eyes are closed and I am deep breathing, a few words or a phrase will pop into my head. Typically it is something uplifting, or something that coincides with how I’m feeling at the moment.

I continue to meditate on those words or that phrase. If I feel led, I will write them down in the note book or even pray about them.

After a few moments of meditation and a few more sips of coffee, I open the notebook, and write down anything and everything that I am thinking about.

NOW, you might be thinking, that is NOT something I would do! I thought the same thing, I was like “There is no way I will do this more than once!”

I was so wrong, it has been so therapeutic for me to write down what I’m thinking about, get it out and begin to move on with my day!

Last but not least,  I make a to-do list of the things I want to get done before my son wakes up.

I typically start this to-do list in my phone before I go to bed. I find it helps me to fall asleep faster, and not feel the need to stay up because “I might forget tomorrow.”

So I glance over that list, and decide what needs to be tackled before everyone is up and at ’em and I have at it!

What have I found that comes out of this morning routine?

I am more present. After the kids wake up,  I wrap up what I am doing and start on breakfast. After breakfast, we are able to get up and moving, walking the dog, out the door to the chiropractor etc.

I am able to get on the floor with him and play, because my mind is not on the basket of laundry that needs to be folded or the dishes that need to be washed.

I am less stressed. Because I tackled the most pressing thing first. Whether it is a blog post, a client proposal, editing photos or a social media schedule, I am less stressed because it is taken care of.

I have more grace. For a while, I was taking it very personal that the work that I do was not being viewed as “work” by people in my life. I was getting upset because I felt like no one understood. No one understood why I needed them to take my son for a few hours so that I could finish up something before a deadline. I was upset because no one understood how crucial nap time was for me (my former working hour(s)). Why we would have to leave family functions or show up late because he would still be sleeping.

Now that my most pressing tasks are getting done before 8-9am, I am able to let it go and have grace that sometimes people just don’t get it!
