type='text'>The end of suburbia?

i have recently ventured into understanding the house purchasing process. if you are there and want to understand mortgages http://www.mortgagecalculator.com/ is a very useful resource and quite simplistic. if you need a real estate agent in the greenville nc area, mattporterproperties@yahoo.com is a great real estate agent in the area.

very round numbers, a 100k home will cost you 280k to actually buy over 30 years with 5.75% apr, which is a very good apr. this is a fixed rate mortgage. that's ignoring the fact that you will have to pay for utilities, etc.

that puts a house at not being an investment, but a money pit. over 30 years, you will do some 25k in repairs more than likely, a heat pump or two, appliances... etc.

is a house the american dream? why? its crippling debt. i will sell you anything for 2.8x its original purchase price.

and thats a much cheaper home than you want to buy in greenville honestly.

suburban sprall lends itself to my commute. i recently spent as much as 400 a month in gas to drive 35 miles both ways to work. before suburbia, there weren't 3 cars per family. no one drove 15k per year.

if i lived in the same block as i worked. could take public transpo or walk to work, then that would cut my oil/gas consumption by 1/15th. i wouldn't on average spend 350 bucks a month on a car payment. i would take a train, or a bus, which per capita uses much less non renewable resources.

will suburbia die? what would it look like? if it did, housing prices will either go dramatically up and be an elite only thing, or they will go down very quickly because of lack of demand and half vacant neighborhoods.

a little excitement

leaving my girlfriends new place there was a truck running next to my vehicle, it leaves moments before im in my car and takes the long way out, i passed it coming out of the neighborhood and it pulled in behind me. it was a 97ish f150, that blueish navy color. i paid very little attention to it. when i pull in my neighborhood, that same color for is behind me, tailgating. get to the end of the road and dodge left instead of right. they follow. drive down a ways and they pull into a driveway. i turn around and they pull back out of the driveway its an expedition, not an f150... not the same guy from my girlfriends place. i know the family that lives there, this is not their car. i take a left and head out of the neighborhood as they follow. i turn into the next nieghborhood and go silent. then i realize my car has running lights that are always on and decide to turn the headlights back on.

i give it a few seconds, i can see the second entrance to the neighborhood and they don't pull in too.

so i hit the main road again. speed up a little and find the culprit.

the expedition had 3ish stickers on it. the liscence plate was mostly 6s and 8s. i think two of each. should have put on my glasses... you know how excitement goes.

pull up beside them, and its at least two people, the driver is a late 30s/40s latio woman. they pull into a neighborhood off firetower near that bank mid firetower and i uturn.

hmm...

end of the excitement.

the flying beast behind me

so.

i hear a helicopter. and its in the room with me.

the room is dark, and i just see the silouette of something flying thats the size of a small bird... bigger than a hummingbird. honest. its in the room with me. and making lots of noise.

i duck. its near the ceiling. and its dark.

i turn on the light. nothing. bah. the switch is turned off above, and the beast is between me and it.

i turn on the kitchen light, realize that it will come AT me now. so i run around, there are two doors to the living room, and sneak up behind the unseen bastard flying moster of doom and destruction, and turn on the light, then, shut the doors behind me, and walk about around through the kitchen and the other door behind me.

a this point, it is attracted by the light, and i cannot tell what it is. its too big to be a bug. too noisy to be a bird... who knows. i just know its after my life at this point, and its making way too much noise.

the fan is slowly beginning to spin. i go to grab the flyswatter, which is grossely undersized may i add.

its a bug. and its MASSIVE.

i go to fight with it, then realize it might just eat me.

so... i play defense. i have the swatter in hand, and let the fan spool up.

pass one towards the light, and it over shoots.

pass two.

pass three and it flys too high!

Score. TKO by whirlling fan blade. its on its back, trying to tuck in its wings, but nothing more. not leg shaking nothing.

im gonna use the word scarabe. thats a good word. too big for a beetle. but it was a little horned wood beetle or something. but why is it in my house.

while he was unconcious, i picked up a cup, and dropped it over him, and hes now in the garage.

but.

i wanted to relay my brush with death.
