So, the previously mentioned first date went well. Although I had a major brain fart in planning the date, which is a funny story. Ask me if you see me. I don't post everything on my blog :p

We're on date five, which is tonight. Meet the friends. I'll admit, it's a little intimidating, but I'm still excited.

Still struggling with the time management thing. Dislike. I committed to a weekend retreat (helping not being a candidate) and now I wish I had waited till spring. Fall is just so insanely busy, committing three weekends hurts (two training weekends and then the retreat itself). But, I committed to it, and I won't back out now.

Well, I would go on, but there are issues at work. Off I go!

No Promises

I find it incredibly humorous that the last time I posted (2 years ago), I had a sinus infection, and have one now as well. Note to self: requiring further research, could blog posting be related to sinus infections?

Anyway, no promises on the longevity of this posting streak, but I had the urge to post again. This is probably due to the fact that several of my friends have blogs, some of them quite successful, considering none of them are celebrities.

Since it's been 2 years since I've written, I'll use this post as a state of the union address. It'll just be a summation since, as mentioned earlier, I have a sinus infection, therefore my head feels like a bowl of thick soup.

I bought a house in July. Crazy. I'm officially a grownup. I'm debating if this is a good thing (just kidding). I'm also back to dating online after a year's break. This was partially self-imposed and partially what I felt God was telling me to do. But I feel good now, and actually already have a date tonight. So, there's that. I'm also fighting with time management, but that's nothing new. I'm just trying to figure out what is worth spending my time on, and what isn't. I have the urge to be a gaming geek sometimes, but then question the usefulness of that kind of thing. Another side effect of previously mentioned grownup status.

The drugs are making me tired, so I'm going to call it a post. More to come...?

Re-energized

...not about blogging. Same energy level there. I had an idea recently about my fitness goals. I reached my goal weight a few months ago, but still haven't been completely happy with where I am. I didn't want to lose more weight though... I'd be a twig. Well, not that bad.

So, I needed some way to quantify a new goal. Last week I had a though. Body fat percentage. I ordered a body fat caliper and got my measurements. I currently have 18.67% body fat. That falls in the low end of the average range and 1.67% away from the high end of "fit". That's good... but I want better.

I'm looking to get to 14%, which is the low end of fit, 1% away from "athletic". That means 4.67% body fat to lose. My goal is to lose it in 3 months. That will be a challenge, because I tend not to push the envelope very hard when I'm working out/dieting. So this will be a challenge. But, I'm excited. I bought some new, heavier resistance bands, and now that I am over a sinus infection, started working out using a more intense program than I followed before. I also want to cut out Quizno's subs for the 3 month period. Not sure if that will happen, but it's good to have goals :)

So much for good habits

Well, I haven't done so well keeping up with things I wanted to do this week. Obviously I've neglected the blog. I also missed 2 days of workouts. Oh well, baby steps.

I did, however, rejoin eHarmony. I created a new profile and found that my personality assessment came back quite different the second time. Evidence I've grown in four years? Hopefully, this round of online dating goes better than last time. Although, I did get a funny story out of it.

Currently, I'm emailing a beautiful blond I was matched with who lives in Jacksonville named Michelle. I'm probably out of my league again (Eric has said my taste in women is too good), but as my pastor says, life is spelled R-I-S-K. Anyway, we'll see how it goes.

My relationship with God has been better this past week. I've been able to spend some time in prayer and reading the Bible. It has led to my having a better mind set in general, and led to having amazing worship times Sunday and Tuesday. I really want to be in a good place with God before my life gets more complicated (youth group in May). The last thing I want is to try and lead youth from my own abilities. My hope is that I will be able to hear and see where God is moving so that I can follow along.

Just in time...

...with one hour to go before midnight, I get a second post in. There is not much to report since two o'clock. I worked out when I got home from work, and watched some more news on the economy. I won't go into that right now, because I will start preaching. But to sum it up, the current administration appears to be putting up a smoke screen to avoid blame for mismanaging the supposed bail out funds. They are now taxing the bonuses that AIG gave their employees, which is in their contracts, and Congress knew existed before they passed the bill. Sad.

Anyway, I gave in and played World of Warcraft for three hours. I haven't played since Sunday, which is an impressive length of time away from the game for me. I'm definetly looking forward to the weekend when I can relax and get some reading done. I'm also thinking of reading Common Sense by Thomas Paine. I did not post anything yesterday. Partly because I spent my entire lunch break out of the office, and partly because of LOST night, and I spent an hour watching TV when I got home from work instead of writing. So, this will be my catch up post and then I'll post more tonight, hopefully.

I don't have anything terribly exciting to report about yesterday. I spent a good bit of the TV hour watching CNN and Fox News. President Obama was holding a "Town Hall Meeting" in Orange County California. The main topic being the economy and AIG's use of the bail out money. It's frustrating because it is nice to see a president addressing the people so often, but I also have a hard time believing anything he says. Not because he is a democrat, but because he is a politician. I don't believe any politicians, republican or democrat. Everything they say is not said to reveal the truth to the American people, but rather to manipulate. I just want to know the facts. As Abraham Lincoln once said, "I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts".

Reading John Adam's biography and the historic times we are living in at the moment (the worst recession in 100 years) have caused me to take a greater interest in learning about politics. I'm not sure what I can do as it feels like there is very little that an individual can contribute to such a massive issue. This isn't just the United States, but rather a global recession. I don't agree with a lot of what Congress is doing at the moment, with all of their excess spending. I don't agree with some of Obama's stances on issues either. But I hope and pray that we come out of this with a stronger economic foundation and maybe a less federalist government. Here's hoping.

Challenged

I have felt challenged recently to change some things in my life. One being that I have read many books, but they have been predominantly fiction. After hearing from many sources that successful people read some number of non-fiction books a year, I finally decided to yield to the peer pressure.

About a month ago, I started reading a biography of John Adams. I had not intended to study Adams, and was actually reading through reviews on biographies of George Washington, as I had a desire to study our founding fathers, Washington being the most commonly referenced. The reviews were conflicted and pointed to a lack of written correspondence left behind by Washington as one of the reasons less was known of his private life. Apparently, Martha Washington burned all of their letters when her husband died. Since I was specifically interested in their private lives, to get an idea of their character, I became discouraged.

I then read in one of the reviews where the reviewer stated he would like to see David McCullough write a biography of Washington. Intrigued to find out what McCullough had written, I found a biography of John Adams by McCullough. The reviews told that letters between Adams and his wife Abigail were referenced often in the book and were plentiful. So, I ordered the book immediately.

Having only read a quarter of the book so far, I am again challenged; this time to start journaling. Adams not only wrote many letters to members of Congress and his family, but also kept an extensive journal. It is one of the tools McCullough uses to give us a glimpse of the character of Adams. So, while I am not a member of congress, nor a foreign diplomat, nor do I intend to be President some day, I have decided journaling would be a good discipline to have. Hopefully, this is but the first of many entries.

The Return

Honestly, I'm not sure why this was on my NetFlix list. I had spent a couple of months not maintaining it, and when I returned (no pun intended) to see what was next, I saw this. It has Sarah Michelle Geller, so I said, "Eh, why not?"

Unfortunately, by the end, I could answer that question. The why not is the fact that this is one of those movies that tries too hard to be clever. Not clever like Momento, but rather clever like Stay. The whole movie was spent wondering what the hell was going on, rather than wondering why it was happening. Sarah spends the whole movie being stalked by various men and fending them off without knowing why they were attacking in the first place. The effect was to make you feel like she was living someone else's life. But it didn't work.

Finally, at the end of the movie we learn the why. But instead of feeling a sense of "Oh, I get it!" I was left with an "Ummmm..... okay".

The acting was pretty good, and there was at least some resolution at the end, so I won't give it a ranking of Stay, but I do give it a D. For those of you unfamiliar with the process of brewing beer, the wort is the liquid mixture you create by steeping the grain and adding the malt. This is all done at a temperature of approximately 160 degrees.

Once the wort is finished (takes about 2 hours), you have to cool the wort down to the temperature needed to pitch the yeast. This is typically 70 degrees for the yeast I use. The tricky part is that you have to cool it as fast as possible because the temperatures between 150 and 90 degrees are the ideal temperatures for bacteria to grow. They are not dangerous bacteria, but they will spoil the flavor of the beer. In the past it has taken me 2 hours to cool the beer by setting the 4 gallon pot in an ice water mixture. Not very effective. It hasn't hurt the beer, but I still wanted to improve. So, last night I bought 50 ft of copper tubing, some acrylic tubing, and got to work on my wort chiller.

There are two types of wort chillers; immersion and counterflow. The immersion chiller is placed in the wort and then cold water flows through the copper tubing to cool the wort. With the counterflow chiller, the wort actually passes through the tubing and the tubing is placed in ice water. It cools faster than the immersion chiller, but is harder to clean. And cleanliness is THE MOST important part of brewing.

So, I built an immersion chiller. No blueprints, just the general principles of how it works. It worked beautifully. I got 3 gallons of water down from 150 degrees to 80 degrees in 15 minutes as opposed to 2 hours. Next step, test it in an actual wort. I'll be doing that this weekend. Wish me luck :)

You're not the biggest loser... goodbye!

I'm addicted. The Biggest Loser somehow manages to draw me in every week. It's great seeing people put that much effort into losing weight. There's nothing that frustrates me more than seeing obese people not trying to change. I've never been obese, but I have been 40 pounds overweight. I'm actually about 15 pounds overweight at the moment. I'm on a moderate diet and am now working out 3 times a week warming up to working out with weights again. So, I sympathize.

The only thing that bothers me about The Biggest Loser is how they throw in those "reality show twists". I think it would be more fair if they simply eliminated the person who lost the lowest percentage of body weight that week. Forcing people who work hard together to lose weight to vote each other off is not fair. Every week people are in tears over the decisions they have to make. TV yesterday to see what would be on and saw the State of the Union was on after American Gladiators. I decided to be a good citizen and watch both :)

Well, I tried to watch the SotU. To begin with, it took about ten minutes for the Pres to even make it to the podium. Then every freaking thirty seconds, there was a legnthy pause for applause. I tried to withstand the pep-rally-ness, but one thing finally made me give up and go back to watching Enterprise on Sci-Fi. The content.

I understand the Pres can't go into great detail on everything purposed, but it just sounded like more politician fluff. Cut taxes but increase spending. Now, I'm all in favor of cutting taxes, but come on. And with no specifics to explain how all of these wonderful changes will be accomplished (I'm sure some other vital areas they don't want to mention will get budget cuts), it did not encourage me at all. Not even with all of the Hoorah, At a Boy, We Rock talk filling in the gaps where some details could have been placed.

I'm just tired of politicians in general. I'm starting to think the Federal government needs to be cut WAY back and we should go back to the states having more power. It just seems like a central government is too susceptible to corruption. I just don't believe any of them anymore.

I want to see clearly written white papers detailing how budgets are being balanced, or how these new programs will be paid for. But I think the Federal government is just too big for that to ever happen. /whine

Dane Cook

Last night I watched most of a stand up marathon on Comedy Central. It was all leading up to a Dane Cook special. The marathon was great, with some exceptions. The best comedians I saw were Frank Caliendo and Jeff Dunham.

Frank does some great impersonations, and is able to do them back to back. So you end up with John Madden talking to George W talking to Robin Williams. Good stuff.

Then Jeff Dunham had me in tears. He has several puppets and is amazing with his vantriloquism. I remember him from a long time ago using Peanut and Jose the Jalapeno on a Stick. He has improved alot.

But what totally ruined it for me was watching what little I could stand of the Dane Cook special afterward. I sometimes listen to Lex and Terry on the radio in the morning on Rock 104 and remembered them talking about how bad he was. Well, I had to see if he really was that bad. He is.

I sat through about 20 minutes and didn't laugh once. What was amazing was that he had a packed stadium laughing at his jokes. If you can call them that. Really, he just tells stories that are not at all funny. He's kind of like that pot smoking friend who tells incoherant stories (except Dane wasn't high), and they're only funny if you've had a little too much to drink. So, the only explanation I have is that they were all drunk.

Lex and Terry, you were right. Well, Claudia didn't headline, but no other names are of any note. I was excited because I enjoyed the fantasy-esk feel of Chronicles of Riddick. Plus, I figured Pitch Black came first and we all know sequels are rarely better than the first movie. Very, very wrong.

The general plot, a group of colonists stranded on a foreign planet, trying to survive, is the standard generic action flick plot. But they fail miserably in creating a believable setting. The planet appears totally barren except for a small abandoned human settlement. The colonists have to use technology to find water. Then you have the antagonists, hordes and hordes of raptor-like predators. What irked me was, they're the only living things on the planet, but there is NOTHING to eat or drink. Nada. Zip. What?

Then you have the three suns orbiting a planet in between them. Huh? I have confuse. My favorite though is the rain scene towards the end. A cloudless rain on a desert planet. I mean, I know this is Sci-Fi, but the lack of believability killed the experience.

If the characters were interesting at all, I may have let all of that slide. But the were as one dimensional (is there a .5 dimension?) as any disposable action characters.

Actually the first time I tried to watch it, I fell asleep. I tried to blame it on a long day at work, but... not so much. Critique movies. We'll see how it goes.

I saw We Were Soldiers all the way through for the first time last night. It's about a battle of the Vietnam War that took place in what came to be called The Valley of Death. It stars Mel Gibson, Madeleine Stowe, Greg Kinnear, and Sam Elliott.

Not a bad war flick. It was one of the most brutal battles in American history, so the battle scenes are pretty intense, although I think Saving Private Ryan was more so. The movie seems to be written to get you to care for Mel's character and his family, but I didn't find myself getting attached to any of the other characters. So when the other characters start dying off, I don't find myself caring as much, aside from a general sympathy and appreciation for what all soldiers must go through in war.

Another part of the movie that falls short is an attempt, toward the end, to make you connect with the Vietnamese soldiers. It's too little too late. You've already spent most of the movie watching them throw themselves at the American troops, who even if we weren't American, we care for more because that's what the story focused on at the beginning. So, seeing a Vietnamese soldier looking at a picture of his girlfriend/wife in a journal before he heads off to battle isn't going to get us to sympathize very much.

Overall, it was a good experience. The acting was great, and so was the dialogue. Of course, I may be slightly biased since I enjoy most movies with Mel and Sam.

Rating: B

Wii Weekend or MLK Day for Geeks

Wii weekend was lots of fun. We had the Wii with it's sports package and played most of the weekend. It includes bowling, tennis, baseball, golf, and boxing. Bowling and golf were my favorites, probably because I was able to put up some good numbers. Tennis and boxing were good fun, I just wasn't very good at them. Baseball. Baseball was just as exciting on the Wii as it is in real life. Not at all.

I also got to see and play some of Playstation's Assassin's Creed. Much goodness. The graphics were ridiculously good to the point where someone walking by would think we were watching a movie. The gameplay is pretty clever, but the combat is rather one dimensional. There are very few attacks, although there are several animations for the same move, and all quite brutal.

I also got to see National Treasure 2 Saturday. It was an attempt to set me up with a girl who works with my friend. She was beautiful and sweet, but very shy. And the fact that it was a group outing to a movie did not make it very condusive to getting to know one another. Once we started talking, after our other friends "had to go get snacks", it wasn't long before the annoying pre-previews started and made conversation difficult. I asked her to watch The New York Football Giants with us Sunday, but she had a friend come in town and bailed. I don't blaim her; hang out with an old friend from out of state, or hang out with a guy you just met and talked to for 15 minutes : )

All in all, a great break from the everyday grind, and much needed. By the way, National Treasure 2 was good fun. (Incoming SPOILER!!!) Although a vague cliffhanger at the end which did nothing more than say "Hey, we're making a third one too" was rather weak, but whatever. I didn't want to be one of those blog whiners. So, I'll sum it up and move on. Work sucked, I had to sit outside at Starbucks to work on my book, I got writer's block, and then had to walk my dad through setting up his new motherboard, over the phone, which would not recognize his hard drive. Crappy day.

But, on a good note, I took Monday off (MLK day) and am going to Jacksonville to visit a friend of mine. There will be lots of WII (that's the console, not the war) and lots of football. I should also be able to get some writing done, since I don't seem to be able to get much done at home; distractions and what not.

Well, back to work. I wish it were that easy. I started writing the book mentioned previously, and have found the process to be quite daunting. I started with a basic idea of a fantasy story line, created a few characters, and started writing. A few things happened once I put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard; actually, more like stylus to PDA).

I cannot seem to turn of my inner critic and simply let my writer write. I'll stop after a paragraph, reread what I finished, and then decide it's not quite right.

Another problem I found, due to reading some hints from actual authors and podcasts from seminars, is that you can't write a book as if it were a movie. I thought that was my ace in the hole. I've seen tons of movies, particularly in fantasy. This is actually the downfall of alot of first time authors. While movies are great story telling devices, they do not get inside the head of a character as well as books. So my first few pages were flitting between some outside observer and my main character of the moment. I didn't realize how distracting this can be to a reader.

So, all in all, I'm still writing. But I have definetly realized just how challenging the whole process really is.

If I had a dollar for every book I didn't write...

So, I've always wanted to write a book. Problem is, I have little patience to write the details of the story and am much better at overall concepts and plot lines. My brother however is very good at the details. He mainly writes poems because he doesn't have the patience to develop plot lines. Funny, huh?

Well, a few years ago, Eric told me he thought we should write a book. The idea lasted about a week, maybe two before we both lost interest. Recently, mainly due to my lack of gaming, my watching such great movies as the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Pirates of the Carribean, I feel inspired to try again. Over Christmas, I mentioned that we should co-write something. He latched on to the idea and so far, a week later, we are still going.

I'm outlining the story and the character details. He has been acting as my editor and sounding board so far. It's pretty exciting, although, as a realist, I am tempering my enthusiasm with the reality that not everyone can can be J.R.R. Tolkein and few even get published. But so far, I'm letting myself dream lofty dreams. : )

Intro/Update on Life

So, this is my first blog. Hopefully my writing style will improve as I blog. For now, you'll have to bear with me. Or not.

I am a recovering WoW (World of Warcraft) -aholic. For those of you living under a virtual rock, that is a very popular online role playing game that sucks the real life out of you. I have an excuse though. I have several real life friends (including my brother) who played also, and that was our place to hang out and talk.

Actually, now that I don't play, I don't get to talk to them as much (not much of a phone guy). I have however, decided to pursue an interest in video game level design (as a hobby). Warcraft 3 (damn you Blizzard for making such addictive games) has a game editor that allows fans to create their own levels. So far I'm having a blast. Although I find that I am a bit of a perfectionist. There was a period of about 3 weeks where I stopped editing because I couldn't get one of the features to work the way I want :)

Anyway, I'm going to go walk a few miles then eat me some sheppard's pie that I made.
