By: Rachael Pisarcik - Rebels at work!

By: Rachael Pisarcik

In high school, we try and balance our homework with sports and other extracurricular activities. Adding on a job to our already busy schedule is sometimes a wrong choice. For many people, however, that’s not the case. Many parents are always nagging their children to get a job the day they turn 16.Although other times their child is ready for independence and wants to be “making their own money.” Some need to realize that earning money comes responsibility.
Studies at The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics have shown that approximately 8.1 million people ages sixteen to nineteen, or about half of the population that age are employed or looking for work, and as the years go on that number has gotten higher. For most boys ages sixteen to eighteen the most popular jobs they chose are as cashiers or as cooks. Girls the same age seem to also work as cashiers, at food counters, in retail sales, and in restaurants.
If you’re trying to find a job and are struggling, don’t feel so alone. We’ve all been there once or twice. My advice to you is to start now. Turn in your application and be confident. Show some energy! If you don’t get a call within a week, I suggest calling them. The job you’re applying to will most likely applaud your efforts of being bold and eager for a position. Also, being nervous is common- but don’t let those nerves get the best of you. When you go for an interview look professional, but most of all act professional. Remember that a job interview is when you can highlight gratifying details about yourself, such as being an honor-roll student, being involved in extracurricular activities, and stressing about your experience that could help their business.
Having a part time job in high school is a great decision. It shows you how to manage your time and gaining the experience will help you become more successful as you begin to take on and accomplish your own career. Don’t be lazy and stop depending on mommy and daddy; it’s time to become an independent and responsible adult.
Many kids at Seton – La Salle exemplify being independent and earning their own money. Some of the students interviewed have had previous experience and give details about what a “good” or “bad” job for high school students entail. For those of you who are unemployed and are searching for a job- here are some ideas that could best suit you, as they did for the following people.

Throughout the last few years, the Rebels boys basketball team has struggled to reach the playoffs. Seasons have gone by with losing records and frustrating results. The Rebels have not won a section title since 2000 and a PIAA championship since 1988.

Somehow, the Rebels have managed to turn it around and show why they are a playoff worthy team this 2011-2012 season. The Rebels finished with an overall record of 14-7 and a modest 3rd spot in their section. A stand-out performance this season was the Rebel’s big win on senior night against Brentwood to secure their spot in the playoffs. Seniors Matt Onorato, Ben Miller, Kevin Hart, and Tim Plansinis have not reached the playoffs since we have been at Seton- LaSalle, until this year.

In the preliminary round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs, the Rebels beat Neshannock in a stunning 71-25 victory at Chartiers Valley High School last Saturday. This win was quite an accomplishment considering the previous seasons, but the Rebels plan to go far in this year’s playoffs.

You can see the Rebels in action and watch them continue their playoff run on Wednesday, February 22. They will be playing against Quaker Valley at West Allegheny High School at 8pm.

By: Sara Wagner - moviegoers thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and most couples were truly inspired by Kim and Krickitt’s real life story.

There have been many mixed reviews about the new movie The Vow that came out last Friday. We have all seen the heart wrenching movies of forgotten love such as Dear John and The Notebook written by Nicholas Sparks. Although, many people have thought that The Vow was written by Nicholas Sparks, it is actually inspired by a true life story and book by Kim and Krickitt Carpenter. The couple was interviewed about what they thought about the movie by Fox411.com. They said “The movie doesn’t talk about faith significantly. It would have been nice to see more of it, the first book we wrote was extremely embedded in our faith, but I think the movie does depict the inspiration of the battle to hang in there. I think the audience realizes we are a people of faith.” So, if the movie is leaving out the spiritual view of the story, what else are they leaving out? There are a few things that movie has done to change up the story. In the movie, Leo, who is played by Channing Tatum and Paige, who is played by Rachel McAdams, get a divorce after the accident that causes Paige to forget everything about her marriage with Leo. Leo proceeds to win back Paige’s heart and shows her that he still loves and is committed to her. In the real life story, the couple always vowed that they would never do that. The real couple of Kim and Krickitt trusted in their faith in Jesus and stayed true to their wedding vows, hence the title of the novel and film. Overall, most moviegoers thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and most couples were truly inspired by Kim and Krickitt’s real life story.

By: Jillian Lesaca - dance was cancelled due to water main break. Bummer!?!?.

By:Jillian Lesaca
In the hum-drum of daily school life, one thing that seems to really bring people together is a school dance. People either gather together a group of friends or go with one special person. On Saturday, February 11, here at Seton-La Salle the tables will have turned. The girls will have asked the guys to go with them. This tradition is known as the Sadie Hawkins dance. Most people don’t know that the dance idea and theme actually originated from a comic strip! Popular 1930′s comic strip, L’il Abner, had a few cartoons dedicated to character Sadie Hawkins. She was described as “the homeliest gal in all the hills” and didn’t have any male suitors. Her father created Sadie Hawkins Day where all the unmatched girls would pair up with bachelors of the town and be wed. This simple comic strip inspired a nationwide event that took place in high schools and colleges everywhere. The feminist movement took it upon their shoulders in the late 1930s to institute this in schools to show female empowerment.
A popular campus event of the 1950s had the women asking out the men.
So who is Sadie Hawkins?
• Sadie Hawkins is a fictional comic strip character created by Al Capp in his famous comic, Li’l Abner (1937)
• Sadie Hawkins Day first appeared in November 1937. Spinster Sadie married the Dogpatch man she caught in a footrace
• By 1939, LIFE magazine reported that over 200 colleges participated in the event that year
• Not only did the girls ask the boys to the dance, they also dressed up as characters from Li’l Abner
The idea of Sadie Hawkins proved to be so popular that it was held nearly every year in high schoolsa nd colleges across the country. During the 1950s, a week of contests and related activities took place, including competitions for the students who most resembled the comic strip characters Li’l Abner and Daisy Mae.
Nowadays, the tradition is still going strong. The dance can be any type of dress: formal, semi-formal, or informal. One popular dance theme is to have couples dress in matching outfits. Whether you go with or without someone, the idea is always just to have an enjoyable time. For all you girls out there, if there is that one certain person you’ve had your eye on for awhile, this is the perfect opportunity to pack up the courage and just go for it. Go get ‘em girls!

Some of the money from the ticket sales will go to Invisible Children. Tickets can be bought for $10. The dance will be held in the Seton-La Salle cafeteria on Saturday, February 11 from 7:30 PM to 10 PM.
