Priorities ...

These last few months have been crazy to say the least for me. Some totally out of my control, which always makes things harder. A few weeks ago I took a moment for myself (which always revolves shopping of some form for my shop) and went on a girls buying trip to Brimfield Mass. Last year I decided that if Brimfield was going to be in my future at all, it would ONLY be for buying so, as I would say "I divorced Brimfield"... but went back for a buying trip with my picker pal Maureen.

We stopped and shopped along our 5 hour drive from her house to Brimfield and came along some awesome shopping stops ... Mo called it our "WARM UP"

Brimfield is a breed of it's own and even tho I have attended Brimfield more times than I can count, it still is never one of my favorite things to do. The logistics of Brimfield are just HARD. Shows open and close all in the same day, parking is limited, picking up your purchases is NOT easy and sometimes it costs extra when you need to hire a porter, the people are NOT Southern and there is a ton of walking! We went on a girls only excursion, so we had to fight the logistics on our own.

The stranger the better...here I am in a crazy funny store with a crazy funny owner that we visit every Brimfield. I didn't buy this large paper head, but now I wish I would have!

We found this amazing hat & purse vendor in the back of one of those crazy bad fields ... his booth was fantastic and nearly SOLD OUT! Amazing what you can find in the field full of crap ... a DIAMOND!

The town is beautiful and the weather was in FULL SPRING~ Lilacs and trees blooming and blue skies~ Perfect shopping weather!

As we drove back to Maureen's house I was welcomed by a martini and a comfy bedroom filled with sweet smelling lilacs and vintage goodness and before I knew it the short girls vaca had come to and end and I was back on the plane headed home.

As I reflected on our trip, I did buy some things but not as much as I had hoped for....but I was glad I went, all the same! The weather was great and even tho it was in the 80's for two straight days, I wondered why sooooo many East Coast Men find it necessary to remove their shirts in public ??? Strange!

Just wrong on so many levels~

We laughed a lot, we ate food that we shouldn't and put some "you can't make this shit up" stories in our book of memories that no one will ever be able to take away!

Now would typically be gearing up for a Summer round of shows, this year we have cut back some and so we have eliminated our Summer Show Schedule. Maybe not forever, but at least this year. I won't be showing in Rhinebeck NY this year for the Country Living Fair, but don't count we out...I'll be back.

Life is precious and sometimes you just have to take a step back and take inventory of your priorities and give yourself a little time to take a deep breath.

Where Has The Time Gone...

Well, I wish I could give a simple explanation of where I have been since my last blog post, but sadly it is not a single paragraph answer. I will say that over the past 45 days my life has been in a whirl-wind roller coaster ride of ups and downs. As the social media world has changed over the years since I started my blog, I find myself doing more Facebook post than blog post, but I don't want to throw in the towel of my blogging quite yet. But if you want to follow me on my Personal Facebook page, please do so...I will warn you, I post a LOT about my cute pooch Lil Bit :-) *ADVANCE WARNING*

Due to some health issues with my Mom, I missed seeing my regular customers in Round Top this Spring. Luckily Jerry took control of my desk and greeted customers and wrote tickets and sold things for me while I had to be away with her. I missed seeing all of my customers and enjoying the show, it is one of my favorite shows to do and it keeps me going back year after year. I tell newbies to Round Top, "you just have to go, it is like nothing else and until you experience it for yourself, you really can't explain it".

As with anyone else, life goes on outside of my shows... I wear multiple hats... Wife, Mom of my cute little dog Lil Bit, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, Shop Owner, Blogger, Social Media Manager, Creative Soul and above all of that, I am just ONE PERSON! Please know that I do not do this business alone, I couldn't do it nor would I want to, alone. I have a great support crew back at my shop and they are the reason I keep going at the pace that I do. Some of you may have noticed that over the past year my show schedule has decreased from previous years, and this year is no exception. Because life sometimes gets in the way! I have updated my show schedule on the website and have concluded our show schedule until this Fall. I will be missing a few of my regular shows this year but I hope to pick them up when life gets back to a more normal pace....Normal? What is normal? I am totally unaware what that is anymore.

Eating dinner around a table at a decent hour? Sleeping in your own bed? Working in my yard? Not living out of a suit case? WHAT IS THAT?

I'll try to do better at blogging and look forward to adapting to being as normal as I can over the next few months!

For those of you who have been praying for my mom and keeping up with our family thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Round Top...it's a State OF MIND, it's a FEELING!

I have logged yet another Round Top under my belt and I am so very sorry that you are just now hearing about it.

Life has just been crazy and I hate it that I have left y'all out on a limb...

It was a great show and there is only one thing I can say about Round Top ... It's my favorite show! EVER!

It dawned on me just this week, while we were cleaning out old records from our basement at the shop to take to the shredder that... this Month, 10 years ago, we opened our shop. CRAZY....it hit me like a TON of BRICKS. Over the past few days I have thought back to the beginning, the good the bad, the ups and downs thru the years and I have reflected A BUNCH!

10 years is a milestone and should be celebrated...but not sure what to do....as it is kind of an after thought since I had no plans for a celebration. 1st let me say that in this economy and in this day in age of BIG BOX STORES, ONLINE MARKET PLACES and REPRODUCTIONS, it is not easy for small antique shops to survive. SO with that being said, I am thankful for every day that we have been able to keep our doors open.

At the end of 2013 I started making plans for my 2014 year which I have named "my year to work SMARTER not HARDER" ... maybe in the back of my mind I knew we had a milestone year approaching (but I can't take credit for that, it honestly didn't even dawn on me). Sad I know, but I think when you are a small business owner/shop owner sometimes the focus goes to other things...like PAPERWORK and boring stuff like that. There is only so many hours in the day and time seems to slip by so fast.

I look back at the people that have come into my life in those 10 years, employees, customer, clients, other dealers...it is amazing the relationships that are formed thru the love of antiques & vintage. Speaking of things that have come into my life...what about the INVENTORY. OMG, if I could only get some of those things back! Just think if I could just get back ALL the things I thought were AWESOME that I have sold over the last 10 years and I could look at all of them again as a group, would I still LOVE them today? Hmmm...I wonder. People change, I've changed I know. It's hard not to. Lessons learned force you to change. I hope I have changed for the better....I am pretty sure I have grown wiser. But on a lighter note...Maybe the funnier question would be how many items in my inventory are 10 yrs old? That makes me wanna laugh!

As I worked the counter at my shop today, I will say that small business owners work harder than most consumers ever dream. However, one of my opinions will never change, and that is that we are not a shop necessities, and that most of the time, people come to our shop because they want to, not because they have to....so it makes a happier shopping experience. It's not like going to the grocery store because you don't want to starve. With that being said, when the economy is bad and times get tough, necessities takes priority over ANTIQUES.

I always dreamed of having this neat little shop, organized, always like the picture from a magazine....but I never graduated to that...over the years it has seemed as tho my style has evolved so I buy differently. But in reflecting, sometimes I wish I could just go back to the beginning when things were simpler and maybe as part of my year of working smarter not harder, I should go back to the basics and start buying like a used to? Dance with who brought you to the dance....you know getting back to basics. If there was a simple answer and we all had access to it, we would all be millionaires and we wouldn't be working so hard.

10 years...it seems like such a long time, but it really isn't! Where will I be in 10 more years? LORD ONLY KNOWS. Times change and you have to change along with it. But in closing let me say that if I was to become a millionaire, I wouldn't change what I was doing, it would just make what I was doing so damn much more fun!

In March 2008 I started blogging...now this is my 700th post! Amazing....I mean honestly, I realize that I have the gift of gab...but I never dreamed it would ever become this.

I didn't become a superstar blogger, but it gave me an outlet...an outlet for my creative writing. I am no professional writer, but I never started my blog to claim I was one.

With the edition of Facebook and Twitter, I have found myself blogging LESS, but I am not willing to give it up. It always amazes me when I am out at a show or event and someone comes up to me and says...."I read your blog", it ALWAYS makes me SMILE. I never ever thought anyone would want to read me....but it appears I do have some loyal followers.

I can remember how long it took me to get everything started and being a rookie at blogging it wasn't easy. It consumed a lot of my time and I was always thrilled with someone left me a comment. Like I said, I still don't have a TON of followers, but I appreciate EVERYONE who reads my updates and keeps up with what we are doing.

WOW....6 YEARS! That's a LOT of CHATTER!

As we welcome in 2014 with open arms, we also sweep out the 2013 dust from under our rugs and begin ANEW!

We have some exciting news coming in 2014 and it starts with working on our 2014 SHOW SCHEDULE.

Today was my 1st day back to the shop in the new year and let me tell you my brain is overflowing with ideas. After a much needed show break, we have made some hard choices in what is to come for 2014 and we have decided to work SMARTER instead of HARDER so without further ado...

2014 Winter Show Schedule / JAN-FEB, 2014:

NONE. I have decided to divorce Nashville and that whole scene. After years and years of trying and spinning my wheels, I have come to the conclusion that it is just not profitable for me and there was no consistency in my performance there. It always seemed to me that it was so close to home for me that I should be able to make that work...but in the light of a new year and my new phrase...I'm gonna work SMARTER instead of HARDER, I scratched it off my show list.

2014 Spring Show Schedule / MAR-APR, 2014:

ONLY 1. Yes, you read this correctly. ONLY 1. Round Top, Texas...and having said that, ONLY 1 VENUE. YEP. Saving the best merchandise for the best show in Round Top...The Original Round Top Antiques Fair, The Big Red Barn...will be my ONLY venue in Round Top this Spring. All my eggs in one basket, all my efforts in one place, sounds drastic I know, but It is my work SMARTER instead of HARDER plan of attack and I am excited about my decision.

Obviously, that isn't my entire year, but it gives you a sense of what has been on my mind since closing my show season in November 2013. These decisions did not come lightly, and did not happen overnight in a knee jerk reaction, it has been on the back burner in my mind for a year.

Stay tuned to the blog, Facebook and Twitter for more exciting changes to be announced in the 1st quarter of 2014. It's going to be a fantastic year and we are looking forward to it!

I have not put up a Christmas tree in years! Maybe 10 yrs! But this year the spirit moved me and when my pal and awesome photographer Maureen came to town for the weekend....We went for it!

And what says Christmas more than a coastal blue VW convertible with a tree sticking out of the back!

Untraditional Christmas...

The last few years we have forced ourselves to have a non-traditional family Christmas....and NO I am not afraid to say Christmas....that Happy Holidays crap is for the birds! I have almost quit buying cards just because they don't say Merry Christmas!

About 15 years ago, my parents bought a place in Florida, where they started to go as snow birds for the winter months. At first, they started leaving the day after Christmas so that they could partake in the festivities. Each year they snow birded they left a little earlier and stayed a little longer, the first time they left before Christmas, it almost KILLED ME! I couldn't believe that they were leaving their children and grandchildren behind to go spend Christmas by themselves in Florida where it doesn't even feel like Christmas with a bunch of strangers! After I got over myself and realized that we were all adults here, and Mom and Day for many years made all of our Christmas's so special, it was time they started doing what made them happy....for pete's sake, they deserve it!

Anyway, our family had spent several Christmas's not being together. My Brother was full time military and for a lot of years he was either over-seas or just toooo far away. My Mom and Dad had 4 grand children....my sisters two girls and my brothers daughter and son....and by this time they were getting old enough that Christmas wasn't just what it used to be. After Mom and Dad started spending Christmas in Florida my Sister always planned her vacation around it and her and her family would go to Florida for Christmas and it was really thrilling to the girls....what a Christmas for kids right!!!!

My Dad is 78 but very active.....even has had a part time job at Disney's Animal Kingdom....so a few years we all went to the Animal Kingdom on Christmas Day....pretty non-traditional. AND another year we had a day at Epcot.

As far as Jerry's children and grandchildren....we wait until after Santa Claus visits them at their house....and then after the "rush" of the season is over, we hit them all with another big sleigh of "Santa left all of these goodies at the lake for you..." Christmas Load and...the festivities continue for the little ones a little longer....and they love it!

Christmas for me is just not the same as it once was, and as I have gotten older I realize that it is a special day....but all of the hype that gets put onto Christmas....I feel like it has just taken all of the meaning out of it! The gift giving is just blown out of proportion and I am just well "over it!" When people exchange gift cards for Christmas....I mean come on people.....just go out and buy whatever you need when you need it. I do buy gifts for special people, but sometimes my gifts come in July and not on Christmas day....by this I mean, when I find something that I think that person will love, I buy it and give it, I don't wait for one day in December. For Example...a few years ago in May I found a retractable awning that my parents would love on their back porch at the Florida house....so I bought it and gave it to them.....and then Jerry installed it..... :-)

Christmas is not about a DAY...to me it is about a meaning and more importantly a FEELING. It is always nice to give and receive gifts, but the true meaning of Christmas should never be forgotten.

People change their demenor during the season....why can't it feel like Christmas everyday? This question remains unanswered....

Don't forget the TURKEY....I know Thanksgiving comes 1st....and we are all very THANKFUL!

One Year Ago...

One year ago today we opened our hearts & lives to this little rescue

Not knowing that this scared little baby was going to fill our hearts with so much love!

She was so terrified...the first few days were touch and go, even the vet wasn't sure she would be ok. At around 14wks she had never seen the outside. So we just kept loving her!

She is so curious! Everything is NEW!

She has came such a long way and now is adjusted 100%. But she has led an exciting year!

She's lost her puppy hair.

Traveled to multiple states!

Grew out of her 1st collar.

Now loves being outside!

Goes on boat rides!

Leaned how to make the most of all the miles we are in the van!

Loves her house .... When the wipers freak her out!

Makes friends easily!

Knows how to relax...

But loves to play !

Steals the show when I'm on the road working !

Is the official greeter at the shop,

And works for donuts in the office!

She cheers for her team....

Gives good poochie smooches...

And sleeps under my covers !

Sometimes she's confused about all this travel'n....

But she is always ready to GO again!

I never thought I could love another dog as much as I did my Sadie Girl, but I was wrong!

It's not her birthday, but it might as well be....because one year ago today we rescued her, OR maybe she rescued us!

Either way she won the doggie lottery one year ago today!

I love you Lil Bit <3

It goes without saying that the Country Living Fairs are a WHOLE LOTTA FUN~

So I will just post some pictures to share the JOY...

Lil Bit on her perch as we headed out down the road when the truck began to have some issues...

After several hours in the repair shop and hundreds of dollars later, we were back on the road to head towards Atlanta.

I had been plagued with some sore throat and other items and couldn't wait to get into BED.

The morning we arrived to get in the vendor line at the fair it was BEAUTIFUL~

We waiting in the box truck because it was it was a little chilly!

As my sickness got the best of me, I had to break down and call the Dr for reinforcements.

But we press on and hit it again the next day for a full day of SET UP.

At the end of that...it was clean the dirt off your boots, put on your fav flannel PJ's and lather your chapped lips with blistex and get ready to go again for the next day.

Friday was my day to be ON STAGE...On the Main Stage that is !

As I approached back stage, I had to pinch myself that this was really happening!

Just beyond the curtain was where I was going...

Then it was show time!

All my photos in my slide show were out of order, but I just decided to brush off the nerves and I just WUNG IT!

Sunday I had to stop for a DONUT, my 1st donut in almost 3 months.

It was hard saying good bye to some of my PALS...

As we loaded the truck...I wondered how in the world I sold anything...the truck was just as full as when it came!

Another day of dust covered boots!

As we loaded the last things and turned off the lights and buttoned up the truck, I closed my show season for 2013 and I can say yet again that we SURVIVED.

As we drove home ... we were all a little tired.

It seems like I just got home. Long enough to get used to sleeping in my own bed and we are off once again. This time to Atlanta for our last show of the year!

I managed to cram the truck full yet again and head off on our 6hr drive to set up and do it one more time!

I only had room for one bag, because the box truck was so full of stuff, so I had to leave a few pairs of cowboy boots at home :(

I did manage to pack some warm weather gear....cuz it usually is cold in the mornings!

Can't wait to try out my iPhone compatible gloves!

We did a little work at the shop yesterday while it was sunny and spruced up the area by the front porch....

This morning Lil Bit was perched in her seat ready to roll and we are officially Atlanta bound!
