Today is day 3 of our rose a day for the month of June and I am including a photo of Birmingham socialite Susie Kissel with her blooms of "Betty Prior" at the Birmingham Rose Show.

Susie Kissel with 'Betty Prior' Floribunda

This summer, I want to challenge you to take pictures of people with roses.
It doesn't matter if they are in the garden, at a rose show, at an event or just holding a handful of blooms. This weekend we toured a members garden. I call it a hillside rose garden. This type of activity helps me to see someone else's gardening practices in action and I always come away with some good ideas and a list of roses I just gotta have! This garden was filled with beautiful roses and some spectacular climbing roses. A delicious meal was served by our hostess and a good time was had by all in attendance.

Stunning garden rose

Guests viewing the gardens

Beautiful white Lily

'Fouth of July' Climbing Rose

Another beautiful climber!

All are floribundas.
These roses were chosen by my wife. She loves lots of color in the garden.

Notice the excellent root structure of this specimen. Here I find the beauty and serenity of my garden as it was meant to be. I walk along ,camera in one hand a cup of coffee in another soaking in all that it has to offer. I often pray on these walks. Something about being alone with God's creation takes puts me in an attitude of gratitude and so I thank God for all he's doing in my life and in the lives of my friends and acquaintances. Since I planted my first rose, I have always been able to take comfort here. Blessings to you this day...

People have been buzzing about it on Facebook, Twitter, the office... I even saw a roadside rug salesman holding a sign that said "doomsday sale". I guess I just took a tongue and cheek stance and made some very flippant comments about the whole issue, some of whom looked at me as if to say, "your a minister, go do something". As a Christian, I have no fear of the end of time. For those that do, and those who know me, know I am always available to share what I believe. I have always believed that in God's own time and in His own way, God will bring about the end of time and will do so in such a manner that there will be no mistaking from whence it came. It's not something I worry about, ever.... The scripture is pretty clear on this matter. Below is the text of Mark 13. Read it for yourself. It speaks to many signs that will point to His triumphant return and what you can expect. But as to a precise date and time, well.. I'll let you read it for yourself.....

Mark 13 - NIV Version

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times
1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!”
2 “Do you see all these great buildings?” replied Jesus. “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”

3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”

5 Jesus said to them: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 6 Many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and will deceive many. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them. 10 And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. 11 Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.

12 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 13 Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

14 “When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’[a] standing where it[b] does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16 Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18 Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19 because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now—and never to be equaled again.

20 “If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23 So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.

24 “But in those days, following that distress,

“‘the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light;
25 the stars will fall from the sky,
and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[c]

26 “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.

28 “Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[d] is near, right at the door. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The Day and Hour Unknown
32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert[e]! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”

I think sometimes folks get the impression that in interest in roses is for people of a "certain age". I hope this week's post will serve to dispell that notion.

Whether you grow roses, help construct landscape for those who do or love to take pictures of roses; there is a place for you in the rose growing community.

Get involved in a local Rose Society and see a whole new world open up to you!

K. It was in the upper 80's and low 90's last week! Now, this week we are seeing lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's. A perfect recipe for powdery mildew on my roses. Several of my bushes have suffered with it this Spring. I had to completely defoliate two of my roses and start again. That happens sometimes. You just gotta roll with it! Enjoy these beauties:

"Scentimental" Floribunda
Beautiful "peppermint" colored blooms on nicely forming shrubs.

"Lavaglut" or LavaFlow"
Floribunda
Deep Red coloring and form make this rose a winner in my garden!
The shrubs have been a little slow to start, but are putting out a few new canes.

These babies are still settling in to our garden.
I look forward to many years of blooms from them.

Bren @ http://www.bggarden.com/ is the host of GardenChat and she graciously asked me to be her guest host. After all, the topic was about ROSES!

It's quite an honor to sit in the same hosting chair as some of her previous guest hosts: Michael Nolan, The Garden Rockstar, the folks at MSLiving, Costa Farms, Stark Brothers & The SeedKeeper Co.

The #GardenChat format is casual and free flowing. Tweets fly by faster than lightening. It's hard to keep up, but you always learn so much. Luckily there is always a posted transcript. You can check out last night's transcript HERE.

Below are a few tips on selecting roses for your garden Twitter style (remember twitter, only allows messages of 140 characters or less):

Start with good soil! It is the foundatation for all things growing.

If you have good soil, you'll have good roses!

My Rose Soil Mix:
Equal Parts, top soil, composted manure, mini bark nuggets, mushroom compost.

Soil Ph balance should be in the 6.0 - 6.9 range for all nutrients to be availabe to the plant.

Rose hate wet feet. If area in which you want to plant stands in water, move to higher ground... I built raised beds!

Roses need about 1" of water per week. Basically, if God doesn't water them for you that week, you need to!

Try to water roses at the base of the plant, helps keep disease to a minimum.

A good 2-3" layer of mulch helps keep weeds out!

Question to ask yourself: What will you expect from your roses? Long stems, garden color, self maintainence?

Many people buy rose on impulse and are disappointed with the results... I used to be one of them!!

Be wary roses packaged in a "bag" type sleeve. Most will be dried out and have a wax coating. Typically very stressed plants.

Potted & Bare root roses should have at least 3 good canes and a full root system.

The knockout rose revolutionized the rose industry.

Earth Kind Roses - http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/earthkind/roses/cultivars/ Check these out!

Earth Kind Roses - Once planted, they need little care. Keep em watered for the first 30 days and then watch them grow without harmful sprays & chemicals!

Earth Kind Rose I grow: "Mutabilis" beautiful China Rose

Attn all bloggers! June is national ROSE month! Please dedicate one blog post in June to your favorite rose!

I want to encourage everyone reading this to plant 1 rose this year!

Great way to learn about roses is to join a local Rose Society. Check out http://www.ars.org/ for more info

The posts go on and on.... I think I blurted out a year's worth of blog posts in just over an hour.... It was great fun and I hope to do it again one day!

In fairness, my earliest memories of the delicate beauties were in North Carolina while I was following behind my paternal grandmother as she sprayed her prized rose bushes with a dishwashing liquid concoction that she swore by. A few days later a cloud of Sevindust was in the air, the residual of which I am not entirely sure has nothing to do with my particular eccentricities.

It would be years later before I even gave roses much more thought when creating a garden space for my ailing maternal grandmother here in Alabama. Knowing that her time with us was waning I wanted to give her the best gift I could think of by reclaiming the garden beds that she had tended so carefully when she was able. A newly added arbor needed the perfect accent and I just couldn't find anything that worked until I confronted my own apprehensions head on.

White was the perfect complement to the rest of the space. I knew that much but the specific form it would take still eluded me until I came across the John F. Kennedy Heirloom tea rose. Without a second thought I purchased the two perfect specimens and installed them carefully at the base of the arbor. A few weeks later granny was having a particularly good day just as the blooms began to show themselves.

As she took my arm and we made our way to the side yard, the light in her eyes told me that I'd made the right choice.

"My own private rose garden!" she said, only half in jest.

"I beg your pardon, I never promised you a rose garden…" I sang out.

Her laughter resonated in my soul as she tenderly touched the emerging blooms with her tiny fingertips. This month marks four years since she left us, but those precious moments will make it all worth it.

Michael Nolan, The Garden Rockstar is an author, blogger and speaker on gardening, sustainability, food ethics and homesteading. It was great to see everyone out in force to enjoy the roses on display. The Dunn Formal Rose Garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens was in bloom and many also enjoyed a stroll through the gardens with their mothers. Bringing your mother to the Botanical Gardens is a Mother's Day Tradition for many Birmingham families.

As many of you know, I do not "Grow to Show" my roses. I grow for other reasons. I do, however think that it's important to display and show roses to heighten the interest of those who might want to grow roses. It is also important to me to display our "National Floral Emblem" for all to see. So many people think your roses have to be picture perfect to enter them in a show. If you are vying for "Queen" of show, that may be true. Most people just want to help display the many different types of roses that are grown in our area. I guess I fall into that category. Whatever the reason, growing and showing roses kinda go hand in hand. Whether on the show tables or on your dining room table. We all show our roses! I want to encourage everyone reading this post to at least attend one rose show in your lifetime.... You'll meet some great people and enjoy some awesome roses!

When I arrived at 6:30 a.m. to help with the early morning preparations of the show, I had about 8 or 9 blooms from my garden. In between making a table arrangement and helping register entries for the Photography division, I prepped and set my blooms on the entry table for placement in the show. I was clerk to the photography judges this year and it was interesting to walk the exhibit hall with the judges as they judged the photographs. The role of the clerk is to assist the judges and place any ribbons on the photos. Best of Section winners received the prestigious "Award Of Photographic Excellence" ribbon. One thing you NEVER do when clerking at a rose show is voice your opinion to the judges during the judging. If you know me personally, you know that this task is somewhat difficult for me....HA! They openly critique the roses, arrangements and photos, some of which might be your own! I love doing this job, you really learn quite a bit from the judges.

We had some good crowds this year. People had lots of questions about the roses on the show tables, as well as questions about the care of roses in their own gardens. A couple of people even brought in blooms from their gardens in the hopes that someone could help identify the rose for them.

Below are my results:

1st Place - Blue Ribbon
Best Miniature Open Bloom
ARS Certificate & Trophy
"Tiddly Winks"

2nd Place
Floribunda Spray
"Julia Child"

2nd Place
Rose "n" Crystal
Open Bloom - Miniature
"Tiddly Winks"

1st Place - Blue Ribbon
Award of Photographic Excellence
Miniature Rose
"Heartbreaker"

2nd Place
Rose "n" Crystal
Hybrid Tea
"Veteran's Honor"

2nd Place
Functional Table Setting
"Caldwell Pink" & "The Fairy"
