The Redskin Rant

Redskins vs Broncos

2013-10-26T04:08:00.001-07:00

The Washington Redskins have a 2-4 record heading into Denver to take on the 6-1 Broncos. Peyton Manning in his second season back from a neck injury that sidelined him for all of the 2011 season, is on pace to become the most prolific scoring QB in the history of the NFL! Meanwhile Redskins 2012 QB Rookie of the Year RG3 has struggled to regain his form after coming back from reconstructive knee surgury. Last week RG3 showed flashes of last years form as he threw for 289 yards and rushed for an additional 87 yards on route to a 45-41 shootout victory over the Chicago Bears. This game will be Redskins Head coach Mike Shanahan's first game against the Broncos since being fired by them in 2008. All Shanahan did as the Broncos head coach was win two Super Bowls (1997-1998) and compile a Hall of Fame caliber record of 138-87.Now that the Redskin offense has begun to pick up steam,it is the defense that remains a big question mark. After knocking starting QB Jay Cutler out early, Bears backup Josh McCown led the Bears offense on three scoring drives in the second half.

The Skins defense ,particularly the play of the safeties and cornerbacks has every NFL offense salivating at the thought of playing the Redskins porous secondary.

Often injured safety Brandon Merriweather is serving a one game suspension for his spearing of receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jefrey. Both resulted in penalties on the field that led to scores.I love the Washington Redskins, but Brandon Merriweather is a jackass that needs to go! He has now been involved in three incidents this year of launching himself like a missile at opposing players. In week two he knocked Eddy Lacy unconscious, and then knocked himself out with another head launching shot. I don't think Merriweather's tackling style can be fixed, because he uses that technique as an attempt to make up for his lack of speed and talent. On the positive side Redskins rookie TE Jordan Reed looks like a future perenial Pro Bowler! Targeted

nine times last week ,Reed had nine catches for 134 yards and a touchdown.

Alfred Morris's 472 yards rushing from scrimmage is ninth in the NFL, however Morris's 5.2 yds per carry are better than the nine guys ahead of him on the list.

If the Redskins can keep from getting in big holes early they can best utilize Morris .RG3's 1746 passing yards from scrimmage is eleventh on the 2013 NFL stat list, but RGR 291 yds per game ave passing yards is currently sixth best in the

NFL. Rg3 is on pace to throw for 4,656 yds which would smash Jay Shroeder's team record 4109 passing yards.this further bolsters my point that the Redskin defense needs to step up.

The Washington Redskins ( the name manufactured controversy)

2013-06-30T10:04:00.001-07:00

The Boston Braves owner George Preston Marshall changed the name of the team to the Boston Redskins in honor of their coach Lone Star Dietz.

No ill will here, it's a little scary watching

multiple stories with an agenda that is attempting to vilify and force the team to change it's name. Let everyone stand up and challenge real racism in this country

where there is an intent. Cases like this just diminish the focus on real injustices.

The name was changed in the early 1930's and was granted a trademark in 1967. Was there an intent of disparaging Native Americans, honestly...no.

Meet College Free Agent OT Tevita Stevens

Posted by Chris Herting

Meet undrafted college free agent offensive tackle Tevita Stevens. The 6’3” 300 pound product was born in Hemet, Calif. He attended the University of Utah where he starred as a four-year starter at both guard and center.

As a senior, the honorable mention All-Pac-12 recipient started all 12 games and played every snap (746 in total for those counting).

Beyond the field, Stevens excelled in the classroom earning recognition as a four-time academic all-conference player and first-team Academic All-Pac-12 in 2011 and 2012.

However, it might be his journey to the NFL that is the more intriguing story.

You see, Stevens was no ordinary kid growing up in California. He was the son of Ron and Telekaki Stevens.

His father Ron played tennis at USC.

Stevens has four brothers, two of which had collegiate football careers – his brother Hamani plays center for the Oregon Ducks and his brother Chris played linebacker at BYU.

How’d he end up at Utah?

After graduating high school with a 4.1 GPA and receiving the history award and President’s academic award, the big offensive linemen was only offered one scholarship to play college football at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP).

However, he felt something was missing in his life.

According to a phone interview conducted by Brian Skinnell from The Skinny On Sports (read the full article here), Stevens had this to say:

“Following high school, I served a mission in New York City. I helped spread the word of the gospel to the people there. I learned Spanish and mainly spread the word to the people that spoke Spanish in New York,” said Stevens.

Following his mission trip, Stevens enrolled at Utah and earned a tryout with the football team. The rest is history.

He earned a spot on the team and his first year at Utah was definitely a year to remember. The freshman played in all 13 games at right guard with 10 starts and enjoyed an undefeated season which culminated in a rather convincing 31-17 victory versus the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2009 BCS Sugar Bowl.

Although the team was unable to replicate the almost unimaginable success of the 2008 undefeated season, Stevens continued to use it as motivation and improve on his own individual success. In fact, if you ask him, he’ll tell you that he’s more than ready to compete on the NFL level.

But why? Well, maybe because of his competition day in and day out at practice. Every day he went head to head with first-round pick and former teammate Star Lotulelei who made Stevens the player he is today.

“Star and I went against each other every day in practice and he is definitely the best defensive lineman I have ever gone against. He was definitely worth the first round selection. Going against him made me such a better player in many different ways,” said Stevens.

Whether Stevens ever plays a snap in the burgundy or gold or whether or not he makes the 53-man roster remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure and that is that he’s extremely excited to be in the Nation’s Capital.

Stevens concluded the interview saying, “I’m excited to be a Redskin and to be a part of the whole legacy of the organization. The winning tradition, the success, and the history is amazing.”

Magical Season

2013-01-01T06:49:00.001-08:00

The Washington Redskins just ended the 2012 regular season with an awesome win
over their arch nemesis Dallas Cowboys. The win secured the NFC East
title and a first round home playoff game.
This season has been a magical one for
the Redskins, RG3, Alfred Morris, the Shanahans, Jim Hazlett, and the long suffering Redskin fans. This story is so great, with so much drama and so many plot twists, just making the playoffs is an
incredible achievement. I can't help
imagining more from this team. This is
the same Redskins team that had one of ,if not the worst defense in the NFL against the pass.Half way through the season the Skins were on pace to give up more passing yards than any team in NFL history. This is the same
Redskins team that lost two of its best
defensive players at the beginning of the season, Orakpo and Carriker. This is the same Redskins team that lost starting safeties Brandon Merriweather with a knee injury, and Tannard Jackson suspended
Indefinitely for violating league substance
abuse policy. This is the same Redskins team that has lost Cedric Griffin for the last four weeks due to testing positive for adderal, Griffiin has been an important member of the Redskins secondary.
This is the same Redskins team that was
a unanimous pre season last place NFC East team. ESPN the Magazine reported
data from sports betting site AccuScore computer predicting just two wins for the Skins in 2012. Sports Illustrated's Chris
Burke had the Skins at 6-10, and SI NFL
guru Peter King also had the Skins at 6-10. Who could blame these guys? This is the same Redskins team that lost their
number one running back Roy Helu in the offseason due to injury. Through nine games this year it appeared the prognosticators would be right, the Redskins at the bye week were 3-6 and
had just lost to the 1-6 Carolina Panthers.
After the loss the team voted RG3 as team captain. Since the bye the Redskins
have won seven straight rightly viewing each game as an elimination game. The
team responded to the pressure and became a diamond. After the bye the Skins beat the Eagles at Fed Ex 31-6
behind stellar Quarterback play by RG3
with four touchdown passes and a perfect QB rating.Just four days later on Thanksgiving the Skins
went into Dallas and RG3 became the first rookie to ever throw 4 touchdowns in back to back games. The Skins won 38-31. Next up the Skins third division game in a row the reigning Super Bowl Champion Giants on the biggest stage
Monday Night Football. Skins win 17-16
at Fed Ex ,RG3 sets single season rookie rushing record for a QB. In the win RG3 becomes the second rookie quarterback to win on Monday Night Football next to Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw. The Redskins then upset the Ravens in a 31-28 overtime victory that is truly amazing
with about a minute to go Redskins down by 8 ,RG3 moving the team down the field
he injures his knee on a hit by Haloti Ngata . Shanahan who took considerable
criticism for drafting a second quarterback
after drafting RG3, now looks like a soothsayer mystic. At the time Shanahan
cryptically stated that "We have to have depth to win. Hopefully an injury( to Griffin
doesn't happen) but you have to be prepared. I thought it was a steal for us at the position." Cousins with under 20 seconds remaining threw for the winning
score, and ran for the two point conversion to put the game in overtime.
In overtime Kai Forbath who was brought in to replace Billy Cundiff in October kicked a 34 yard field goal to win the game. This was made possible due to another Skins rookie Richard Crawford
who set up the Skins with a 64 yard punt return. Forbath who kicked the game winner also made two other field goals of 48 and 49 yards in the game. All Forbath did this year was set the NFL record by kicking 17 straight field goals to start a career. The next week the Skins travelled to Cleveland for their fith straight must win. With RG3 out with a sprained lcl Cousins was called on again, all he did was throw for 329 yards two touchdowns
and win rookie of the week. Skins won 38-21. RG3 returned the next week as the Skins travelled to Philly to take on the Eagles who started the game with a touchdown after going for it on fourth down successfully three times on the drive. Although RG3 was clearly hobbled by his injury the Skins won their sixth straight 27-21. This set up the season ending game with the Cowboys to decide the NFC East Title at Fed Ex Field in Landover Md. For the seventh straight win
the Skins swept their most hated rival
Cowboys for the season in a 28-18 victory. After RG3 torched Dallas secondary on Thanksgiving, Dallas decided with a less than 100 per cent RG3 they would take away the pass and make the Skins run to victory. In shocking fashion the Redskins sixth round draft
pick from 2012, from unheralded 1-11 Florida Atlantic Alfred Morris culminated
the season by becoming the first running back to gain 200 yards and score three
touchdowns on the Cowboys. Morris shattered the Redskins rushing record
passing Clinton Portis's 1516 yards by 97yards for 1613 yards. How great was Morris, third greatest rookie season in
NFL history behind Eric Dickerson 1808 yards and George Rogers 1674 yards!
RG3's magical mojo seems to be contagious like a Midas touch of good fortune. RG3 has had arguably the best rookie season of all time. RG3 has broken the NFL record for jerseys sold with the year not over until March. The Redskins regular season finale had an overnight rating of 18.3 the highest rating ever for a regular season game on NBC.The Skins have been money for gamblers at 11-5 against the spread, and on every metric imaginable, this year has been already been a huge success,
but with RG3 as the leader there is no telling what this team could achieve.
RG3 has won rookie of the week 7 times,
Alfred Morris, and Kirk Cousins one each,
with Morris a lock to win the last rookie of the week award. RG3 is only the second rookie quarterback next to Marino to be chosen to the Pro Bowl. The Redskins will be Vegas underdogs as host to the Seahawks in the 4:30 pm game Sunday.
The Skins can win this game with a strong team performance ,and more magic from
RG3.

RG3 to be named to Pro Bowl .

Alfred Morris 46 is the Redskins 426 Hemi

2012-12-16T21:10:00.001-08:00

Alfred Morris that's right...number 46 ,is like a
426 Hemi in the Redskins muscle car of an offense. RG3 at QB is like adding jet fuel and some nitrous to the mix. Today in
a trap road game, Morris churned out tough yards with the Redskins other rookie QB Kirk Cousins at the helm.
Cousins rebounded from an early interception, with a phenomenal first
start posting big time numbers. Cousins
had a 70.3 completion percentage, completing 26 of 37 for 329 yds and a QB rating of 104.4. The Browns game plan was to stack against the run and make
Cousins beat them with the throw. This game really showed the growth of the Redskins as a team. The Redskins made offensive and defensive adjustments as the game went on. For example when Cleveland keyed on the run Kyle called up
the right throws and Kirk executed. On defense, when Trent Richardson had early success the Redskins defense absolutely stymied him. Richardson ended up with 11 rushes for 28 yards, although he scored two touchdowns he was effectively neutralized. Leonard Hankerson , Josh Morgan, Pierre Garçon,
and the wily Santana Moss, along with the speedster Aldrick Robinson have become
a dangerous receiving core. The defense
led by London Fletcher who had his fourth interception today, have continued to improve. Jim Haslett deserves a lot of credit for a defense that has suffered huge injuries, penalties, and suspensions. The Redskins have been able to adjust, especially after halftime this is a stark contrast from last year. The much maligned Shanahans, both head coach Mike and his son offensive coordinator Kyle have made many early season detractors look
foolish. Many if not all pre season prognosticators
picked the Redskins to finish last in the division. Some high profile experts had the Redskins winning but three games this season. The Shanahans have changed the culture, and the attitude and have built through the draft. Even while taking considerable criticism from the self avowed know it all media cesspool that
rules the beltway. Hail Redskins! A new era of Redskins football, RG3 triple option pistol mixed with Shanahan's west coast
has fans ready to get back on "the bandwagon".With two weeks left in the season the Redskins have the lead in the NFC East, the highest rated QB in football, and the number 1 rookie running back in the NFL "the Hemi", Alfred Morris.

Alfred Morris closes on Redskins Record

2012-12-13T16:01:00.001-08:00

With just three games to play Alfred Morris is closing on the Redskins single season rushing record of 1516 yards, set
by Clinton Portis. Morris currently has
1228 rushing yards in thirteen games averaging 94 yards per game. Morris
is on pace to rush for 1511 yards at his
season average. Since the bye week Morris has averaged 109 yds a game,
if Morris performs at this level he will
smash the Redskins single season rushing
record.

RG3 achieved the milestone mark with fellow rookie rb Alfred Morris in
an electrifying performance on Monday
Night Football, over the reigning Super Bowl Champion NY Giants. The suddenly
surging Redskins led by RG3 have in succession beaten division rivals Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants. The stunning turnaround has the Redskins just a game behind the Giants, but with a tiebreaker edge should the Giants stumble.

Alfred Morris 1106 yds tied for third in NFL!

RG3 Feasts on Dallas!

2012-11-23T10:10:00.001-08:00

RG3's rookie records are piling up
so fast, it is hard to keep track of all
his rookie accomplishments. Just four days after beating the Philadelphia Eagles
31-6 ,the Redskins marched into Dallas
and did what they never had done on Thanksgiving, beat Dallas 38-28! RG3 threw 4 touchdowns with a perfect QB rating of158.3 (first time a rookie had a perfect rating)to beat the Philadelphia Eagles.
Four days later the Redskin Rookie
threw four more touchdowns, first time
a rookie had thrown 4 touchdowns in
back to back games. At halftime of the
Redskins game on Thanksgiving against
the Dallas Cowboys, the Redskins led
28-3. Jimmy Johnson former two time Super Bowl Champion coach of the Cowboys and member of the Fox NFL Sunday Crew, called RG3 "most valuable player in the National Football League."
Some RG3 stat categories to note are:
completion percentage 67.5 tied for third,
QB rating 104.6 fourth in NFL, yards per pass attempt NFL number 1 at 8.2, passes completed over 25 yards NFL
number one with 10, interception percentage second lowest 1.3 percent,
and total offense sixth with 2979! This is but a sampling but the eyeball test is much more impressive than the numbers.
His electrifying play has many fans and former players alike touting the rookie phenom as a possible league MVP.

RG3 Sets Record QB Rating

2012-11-19T13:06:00.001-08:00

RG3's single game QB perfect rating of
158.3 is best ever for a rookie, and can never be broken. This NFL week 11 performance was another stellar performance for the rookie, and should put him ahead in rookie of the year consideration .

End of Andy Reid?

2012-11-18T14:27:00.001-08:00

RG3 and the Washington Redskins may
have just ended Andy Reid's tenure
in Philly with 31-6 victory! RG3 had
a Redskin record QB rating of 158.3,
throwing four touchdowns. RG3 led
the Skins in rushing on 12 attempts for
84 yards averaging seven yards a carry.
One of RG3's touchdown receptions was
a 61 yard bomb to Santana Moss, which
Was his seventh touchdown of the
season. This pass was RG3's third touchdown pass of 60 yards or more,
the most since Mark Rypien's 4 of 60 yards or more in a season (1991). In addition Moss now has 7 touchdowns of 60+ yards besting Gary Clark's 6. With
this effort RG3 improved his QB rating
from 93.9 to 100, and his completion
percentage from 65.6 to 68.3 which puts him ahead of Rothlisberger's rookie record 66 percent. RG3's only incompletion of the day came on a
deflection.

Semi-Pro Golfer Tony Romo Misses Cut Against Giants

2012-10-28T14:35:00.001-07:00

Tony Romo threw for 437 yards and four interceptions in a loss Sunday to the New York Giants at Cowboys Stadium. Tony Romo now leads all quarterbacks for interceptions with 13 through week 8. This game was a perfect microcosm of Romo's career with the Cowboys and the team itself as a whole. Romo and the Cowboys have flashed brilliance on many occasions, but they have come up short time and again in the big moment. After falling behind by 23-0 the Cowboys fought back to lead by one 24-23 in the fourth quarter. Eli and the Giants took back the lead with a field goal to make it 26-23 Giants. With the game on the line, Romo forced a pass into a tight window while being pursued by three Giants. Romo's pass was intercepted by Safety Stevie Brown, this should have been the end for the Cowboys, however the Cowboys D got a stop with less than a minute to go, to give Romo one more shot .With a circus catch by Dez Bryant that was called out of bounds by an inch the Cowboys lost 29-24.Why does this Cowboy team fail? To properly assess the Dallas Cowboys and why they fail in an epic way, one has to look no further than owner and GM Jerry Jones. Jones and his Joker-like mask of a face-lift serve as a reminder of his bad judgement, and hilarious" Phyllis Diller"moniker (slapped on him by Jimmy Johnson). His team has become a reflection of himself, with a Quarterback who seems more worried about celebrities and being in celebrity golf events than doing the hard offseason work it takes to be a champion. This behavior of Romo's is reminiscent me of Jones and his incredible narcissism. This guy who owns the most valuable sports team in the United States valued at 2.1 billion dollars, has to constantly insert his Joker face on numerous tv commercials. Jones has assembled many talented pieces, but many are flashy stat mongers who, like Jones selfishly work for their own glory.
Jones fired the architect of the great Cowboy team that won three Super Bowls in the nineties Jimmy Johnson,
basically because Jones could not get
full controll and credit with Johnson
running the show.In retrospect maybe this was one of the reasons Jones fired one of the most beloved coaches ever Tom Landry when he took ownership of the team. Landry was a gentleman and a professional the antithesis of Darth Jones he had class. If you don't think character matters, you go after guys like Dez Bryant , Pac Man Jones, and Terrell Owens. Bryant was given a security detail and special rules this season to keep him out of strip clubs and trouble with the police. Former Cowboy Pac Man Jones entourage was responsible for paralyzing a bouncer at a "Gentlemen's Club"
after an incident where Jones became angry at a stripper who he punched in the face.
With Jerry Jones appearing in numerous tv commercials and series such as HBO's Entourage, Diet Pepsi Max, Papa John's, and ESPN's Monday Night Football just to name a few. It's very clear Jones wants to be the face of the franchise, maybe he should rename the Cowboys the Joneses.
