First things first - check if your Merlin remote's battery needs to be replaced. Remote Signal

Check there is nothing obstructing your Merlin garage door opener's aerial which usually looks like a small wire hanging down from your garage door opener's motor.  Sometimes adjusting the direction or position of the aerial can help improve your handheld remote/s performance & range.

Garage Door Opener power source

Your Garage Door Opener motor power source could have been turned off or disrupted. You'll need to make sure the Garage Door Opener Motor unit is plugged in to the power. You may require an electrician to inspect the circuit breaker, fuse or GFCI.

Garage Door Opener Motor malfunction

Sometimes it can just be a simple restart of the Garage Motor unit (Turn the Motor off at the power source, leave for 30 secs before switching on again) that can restore things back to normal function.

Garage Remote/s reset

In the event of a power cut or malfunction your Remote can be disrupted & need to be reprogrammed in order to restore transmission of signal between Remote & Garage Door.  If your Remote is new, check through the instructions that came with it or contact the company you purchased from for their instruction guide.  You can also find reprogramming instructions in your original Merlin Garage Door Motor booklet.

Wall Button Switch

If you have a hard wired Wall Button Switch you will need to check it still opens & closes your Garage Door.  This will isolate if it is just a problem with your Garage Remote or if the problem is with your Garage Door Motor.

Other Garage Door Remotes

If you have other Merlin Garage Remotes operating the same Garage Door you will need to check if it is just the one Remote or all of the Remotes that have stopped working. If all Remotes have stopped working then it is most likely a problem with your Garage Door Opener's Motor & you will need to contact a local garage door serviceman in your area to come & take a look at the receiver board inside your motor. If it is just one Remote not working this points towards the Remote being the problem & you could safely look at replacing just that remote control with a new one which should fix the problem.

The Beginning - Fixed Code / DIP Switches (earliest technology 1980's to mid 1990's)

The earliest Garage Door Remote's operated on anywhere between 27MHz to 339MHz & had a set of either 8, 10 or 12 tiny DIP Switches inside the back arranged in an up/down or up/middle/down pattern that matched the same sequence of DIP Switches found inside your Garage Door Opener Motor.  This technology was known as 'fixed' code due to the code shared between your remote control & your Garage door opener's receiver always being the same. The key to programming these is to ensure any new remotes have their DIP Switch pattern set to match the same pattern inside your existing remote/s & your garage door opener. Its such a simple effective method that some industrial & commercial brands of Garage, Gate, parking complexes & buildings still use this dipswitch matching technology in their remote controls today. It means tenants & employees don't have to access the motor/control board which is often locked inside an enclosure or situated up high in the roof to programme any new remotes.  

The Middle - Rolling Code Technology (late 1990's to now)

The next phase in garage remote control technology was called 'Rolling Code' or 'Code Hopping' as the code generated by & shared between the remote & your garage opener's receiver changes each time you press the button to open your garage door hence the 'Rolling' name. Programming these remotes is done by accessing the Garage door opener's control panel where there will be a dedicated programming button you press to enter programming mode & then you will press the button on your new remote once (sometimes twice depending on the brand + model) that you want to open & close your garage door which saves it into your opener's memory.  The programming button is sometimes labelled 'LRN', 'Learn', 'Code Set', 'Set', 'PGM' or 'PGRM' depending on the brand & model of garage door opener you have. With so many different brands & models developed over the years there are variances in where the programme button is situated, the sequence, method & timeframe in which you have to enter & exit the programming mode on your garage door opener's control panel & the number of times you need to press the button on your remote to programme it. So it is best to consult your specific opener's manual or the instructions that come with your new garage door remote control to ensure you follow the correct method.

Recently - Code Copying Technology (Remote to Remote)

As an alternative to the older fixed code & the current rolling code remote programming methods, code copying remotes were developed.  Also known as Universal Remotes, Auto Scanning & Face to Face remotes, these remotes require an existing working remote that is already programmed in to your Garage Door Opener's memory to copy the code from.  The method differs slightly amongst different brands in the market but in general involves placing the original remote & the new code copying remote nose to nose / face to face (where the signal emits from each remote), pressing a button on the code copying remote to enter it into copying mode & then holding that button down & also a button that opens & closes your garage door on your original remote down in order for it to emit a signal for the code copying remote to collect & save.  Once done the new code copying remote will now operate your garage door opener if your original remote was an old fixed code type.  If your old remote was a rolling code style you may need to follow a short additional procedure to save it directly to your garage door opener's receiver also.

The main selling point of the code copying remotes are their ability to combine a few different remotes onto one remote, so for example your Garage Door Remote & your Gate Remote have the potential to be reduced & combined onto 1 Remote Control with a code copying remote. However it is important to note that not all remotes created are capable of being copied - there are limitations. There is no single code copying remote that exists that has the the latest up to date & retro fit capacity to copy every single remote control brand & model ever created around the world from the beginning of time to the very latest models today & also Patents mean legally some remotes cannot be copied also. Your Car Brand - Ensure you are looking at replacement shell options that are for your particular brand of car only. The model & year can sometimes help narrow it down but with so many variables within certain years it is best to keep it simple by looking firstly at replacement cases & shells listed under your car's brand & not worrying too much about the model & year. If you have a car alarm installed you will need to be looking for replacement remote case options for the brand of car alarm system you have rather than the brand/make of car you have.

The key blade style on your original car key - Lastly if you are looking for a replacement car key shell rather than a replacement remote case you will need to ensure you select the replacement key shell that has the same blade type as your original key. How do I fit my new replacement car remote case or car key shell?

Fitting the new replacement case or shell is relatively simple. Most car remotes & car keys simply unclip or unscrew to come apart & you can remove the circuit board & chip (if you have a chip) & insert them into the new case or shell & clip or screw the new one back together. Look for any small screws or grooves or indents along the edges of your old remote or car key case to open it & use a flathead screwdriver to gently unclip it. As you are just moving the circuit board over there is no need to reprogram your remote so it will work exactly as it did before you replaced the case.

What T-Handle do I need:

There a few things to consider when looking to replace an existing T-Handle or adding a new one & this can seem daunting when faced with the selection on offer, so we've broken it down into the 3 main points to think about prior to purchasing:

1. Material: Remote Warehouse stocks 2 brands, our metal (solid diecast zinc alloy) T-Handles from Lock Focus which are Australian designed & manufactured & our black (super strong fibre reinforced plastic) T-Handles from Heller which are designed & manufactured right here in New Zealand. 

2. Fixing Style: Once you've decided what material you want, your next decision is to decide if you want a front fixing tee handle or a rear fixing tee handle.

Front fix (also known as Through fix) T-Handles styles are attached & fitted through the front of your door into the front of the T-Handle. The simplest method to install & replace but less secure due to the fixings being visible from the outside if security is of the utmost importance.

Rear fix (also known as Concealed fix) T-Handles are attached & fitted through the rear of your door into the back of the T-Handle. This method is slightly more difficult to attach but offers a higher level of security as the handle cannot be unscrewed & removed from the front & a more aesthetically pleasing look with the fixings being hidden.

3. Key Measurements: When retro-fitting / replacing an existing T-Handle you will need to remove it & check the spindle length & bolt hole distance measurements (shown below). These are the 2 main measurements you will need to look for & match when purchasing you're new replacement T-Handle. If installing a brand new T-Handle you have more flexibility & the T-Handle you select will be dependent on things such as the door width. The Beginning - Dipswitches (earliest technology 1980's to mid 1990's)

Merlin's earliest remote's shown below operated on 303MHz or 339MHz & had a set of either 8 or 12 tiny dipswitches inside the back which was how you programmed them to operate your Merlin Garage Door Opener.  Some even incorporated a small side switch that could be either up or down. Due to the obscure combination of frequencies with number of dipswitches (which varied according to the button colour of your Merlin remote) there is no longer a direct genuine Merlin replacement or an off the shelf compatible/aftermarket remote available for these & most companies will recommend updating to a brand new Garage Door Opener Motor.

Remote Warehouse understands this can be expensive & frustrating especially when your Merlin Garage Door Opener itself is still performing well.  So we are pleased to say there are a couple of solutions we have up our sleeve to help you:

- If you still have an original Merlin Remote we can create a new modern Smooth Operator Remote for you that matches your old remote's settings (shown below)

Merlin Blue - Legacy Range Dipswitches (1996 - 2001)

The next generation of remotes from Merlin standardised a set frequency (40MHz) & set of 12 dipswitches.  The good news Merlin still supports this era with the Genuine M802 blue button Sun Visor style remote still in production today & available to purchase Here (All other styles in this range have been discontinued).

Programming is very simple & a matter of removing the battery cover or back cover from your old remote & your new remote to expose the set of 12 tiny dipswitches in each.  Simply match the pattern the dipswitches in your old remote are arranged in (up or down) on your new remote & it will work instantly.  If you don't have any old original remotes remaining you can find the same set of 8 tiny dipswitches on the outside of your Garage Door Opener's motor & simply match that pattern onto your new remote. Super simple!!

Merlin Green - Legacy Range Rolling Code (2001 - 2007)

The end of dipswitches & beginning of rolling code technology. Merlin's very popular legacy green range shown below is still supported by Merlin with the Genuine M842 2 button key ring style remote still available for purchase Here (all other styles in this range have been discontinued). 

Programming any of the below remotes became a bit more advanced but a lot less involved - no fiddly opening up remotes & setting tiny switches. Instead programming was done via a 'LEARN' button found on the Garage Door Opener's motor. The 'LEARN' button can be found hidden underneath a Green strip on your Garage Door Opener's motor (Hint: sometimes you will need to remove the white light cover on your Garage Door Opener to find the Green Strip that hides the 'LEARN' Button). Once you've found the 'LEARN' button press it once for 1-2 seconds & release, then on your remote press the button you wish to programme for 1 second, release & then press it again for 1 second to confirm & that is it your Remote is programmed. 

Merlin Security+ Technology

All remotes from this era are easily identified by having a Merlin+ logo on the front. Be careful not to confuse this range with the very similar but later Merlin+ 2.0 range as they are not compatible with each other (remotes will have Merlin+ 2.0 written on the front). The entire Security+ range from Merlin has been recently discontinued & replaced with the latest dual technology Merlin Premium+ Range. Programming the Security+ range of remotes is done via the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel.  On some Merlin Door Opener's the control panel will be hidden underneath the motor's light cover.  The 'LEARN' button will be marked 'LEARN' or 'LRN' & is usually a square Orange or Purple coloured button. Simply take the your Merlin remote & hold down the button you wish to programme & at the same time press & release the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel, then release the button you have been holding down on your remote.  Programming complete!     

Merlin Security+ 2.0 Technology

All remotes from the Merlin Security+ 2.0 range are identified by having Merlin+ 2.0 on the front.  They are not compatible with the previous & very similar Merlin Security+ Range which are distinguished from each other by having either Merlin+ or Merlin+ 2.0 printed on the front of the remote.  This entire range is also in the process of being phased out by Merlin & replaced with the latest Merlin Premium+ Range which combines the technology from both Security+ & Security+ 2.0 ranges.  You can shop Here for the remaining stock we have of the Security+ 2.0 Range & also the latest updated options to replace your discontinued Security+ 2.0 remotes.

Programming the Security+ 2.0 range of remotes is done via the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel.  On some Merlin Door Opener's the control panel will be hidden underneath the motor's light cover.  The 'LEARN' button will be marked 'LEARN' or 'LRN' & is usually a square Orange or Purple coloured button. Simply take the your Merlin remote & hold down the button you wish to programme & at the same time press & release the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel, then release the button you have been holding down on your remote.  Easy peasy! 

Today - Merlin Premium+ Technology

Merlin’s latest Premium+ technology combines both the previous Security+ & Security+ 2.0 Technologies onto one remote. So the entire range (shown below) is backwards compatible with both previous Merlin Security+ & Security+ 2.0 ranges. This is great for those that have 2 or more garage doors or a garage door & gate that are each currently operated by Merlin motors/receivers but from differing Merlin eras that until now had 2 different remotes to operate them (Security+ & Security+ 2.0 eras only) You can learn more & shop Here for the latest Merlin Premium+ range.

The programming method with these is fairly straight forward & just the same as the 2 previous generations where you will need to find the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's motor & follow the same method of holding down the remote button & pressing & releasing the 'LEARN' button. The only difference on these latest Merlin Remotes is because they are dual technology you may need to perform a simple procedure on the remote first to switch it between the two programming modes (Security+ or Security+ 2.0).  By default new remotes arrive in Security+ 2.0 mode. By holding down the left & right buttons of the remote until the Remote's LED stays on you switch it over to the older Security+ mode. Once you have set the remote to the correct era to match your Merlin Garage Door Opener you can proceed to programme it into your Garage Door Opener's motor.

Original Remotes

For some older remotes the original is still in production which is amazing & means you can replace your original remote with exactly the same remote!

A good example that springs to mind is the Merlin M802 (Shown below on our website) which began life in 1996 & is still being manufactured today almost 30 years on.

Updated Genuine Branded Remotes

For the majority of remote models around 5-10 years old, the original manufacturer has updated it with a newer model which may look very different from the remote in your hand. On the one hand this is a good thing that the manufacturer is still supporting their old remote’s & systems but on the other hand it poses a problem when you are scouring the internet for the remote you have which has since been discontinued. To make your search easier, we at Remote Warehouse provide active product listings for all old/obsolete/discontinued remote models so you can still easily find the remote that looks like your original one. Once in that product listing it will clearly show & tell you what your new updated remote will look like & you can directly order through that to receive the correct updated remote model.

A great example of this is the ATA TX5 (Shown below on our website) which has now been replaced with the updated & completely different looking ATA PTX-4. 

Compatible Aftermarket Remotes

With many of the really old remotes you will find technology has moved on & the original manufacturer has chosen to no longer support or provide an updated replacement option or the company itself is no longer in operation. In these instances we will recommend a Compatible or Aftermarket Remote option for you.  The terms Compatible & Aftermarket simply mean the remote is not a Genuine Branded item. It has been made by a different manufacturer to suit or act as an alternative replacement for your original branded Remote. Quality varies amongst Compatible & Aftermarket Remotes & this dictates the price you pay but a general rule is they will always be priced more competitively than the Original Genuine Branded remote control.

One of the best examples of this is the Tilt-A-Matic (Shown below on our website) which has now been replaced with Remote Warehouse's Tilt-A-Matic Compatible Aftermarket Remote.

Code Copying Remotes

Another option we may suggest is a code copying remote. Often known as a Face To Face Remote or a Universal Remote these remote’s come in varying degrees of quality & reliability. AHI & Tiltamatic branded Garage Door Openers were originally manufactured from the late 1980's to the mid 1990's & made to a very high standard which is why they have lasted so long.  The accompanying Tiltamatic & AHI TRV-300 Tilt-A-Matic branded Garage Door Remotes for these openers (shown above) were rather large handheld devices which included a removeable sun visor attachment (which you may or may not still have attached) & used the at the time revolutionary dipswitch system to programme the remote to the Garage Door Opener.

It can be a real pain when your garage door remote stops working suddenly or has been slowly & steadily fading in performance & range. Below we take you through some possible causes & provide some solutions for what can seem like a real mystery at times.

Remote Battery

Remote Signal

Check there is nothing obstructing your garage door opener's aerial which usually looks like a small wire hanging down from your garage door opener's motor.  Sometimes adjusting the direction or position of the aerial can help improve your handheld remote/s performance & range./span>

Garage Door Opener power source

Your Garage Door Opener motor power source could have been turned off or disrupted. You'll need to make sure the Garage Door Opener Motor unit is plugged in to the power. You may require an electrician to inspect the circuit breaker, fuse or GFCI.

Garage Door Opener Motor malfunction

Sometimes it can just be a simple restart of the Garage Motor unit (Turn the Motor off at the power source, leave for 30 secs before switching on again) that can restore things back to normal function.

Garage Remote/s reset

In the event of a power cut or malfunction your Remote can be disrupted & need to be reprogrammed in order to restore transmission of signal between Remote & Garage Door.  If your Remote is new, check through the instructions that came with it or contact the company you purchased from for their instruction guide.  You can also find reprogramming instructions in your original Garage Door Motor booklet or sometimes printed on the Garage Door Motor itself.

Wall Button Switch

If you have a hard wired Wall Button Switch you will need to check it still opens & closes your Garage Door.  This will isolate if it is just a problem with your Garage Remote or if the problem is with your Garage Door Motor.

Other Garage Door Remotes

If you have other Garage Remotes operating the same Garage Door you will need to check if it is just the one Remote or all of the Remotes that have stopped working. If all Remotes have stopped working then it is most likely a problem with your Garage Door Opener's Motor & you will need to contact a local garage door serviceman in your area to come & take a look at the receiver board inside your motor. If it is just one Remote not working this points towards the Remote being the problem & you could safely look at replacing just that remote control with a new one which should fix the problem.

Brand:  

The easiest way to search & find your replacement Remote is if you know the brand of your current Remote or Garage Door Opener.  Some Remotes will have their brand emblazoned on the front which keeps your search easy but if not have a look on the back of it as it will sometimes be printed there too.  Otherwise have a look at your Garage Door Opener – usually the back or one of the side panels of your Garage Door Opener will have the Brand & possibly a model number printed on it.  To help we've added an example of how to Search By Brand on our website: 

A) Here is our example Remote we are going to search for on the website. We have identified the Brand is ATA (Automatic Technology Australia) found on the front & back of the Remote shown below:

B) We go to The Remote Warehouse home page & along the main menu at the top of the page we find 'Shop By Brand' & scroll through the list of brands to find 'ATA Automatic Technology' section & click on it to go to the ATA Collection of remotes. The below examples show the method to find & search by brand on our website on your computer. 

C) Now we can look through the ATA remotes & search for a remote that looks similar to our existing one. We find the ATA remote we think is a match & click on it: 

 D) Which takes us to its product listing below: 

E) We see there are further photos in the product listing & click on one of them to enlarge it so we can compare our remote in hand to the one in the product listing & it matches exactly. So this is the correct remote we need to purchase.

F) You can also find at the bottom of the product listing an area called 'Compatible with' which shows other compatible options for this remote which include accessories such as sun visor clips, replacement cases & also compatible remote option/s (if there are any).  For the Genuine ATA PTX-4 remote, we see in the example below, there is a cheaper alternative Compatible Aftermarket remote (Aftermarket meaning it is not made by ATA but will operate & work alongside your existing ATA PTX-4 remotes to open & close your garage door).  You can click on this & to be taken to the Compatible Aftermarket remote to find out more.

H) After clicking on the compatible PTX-4 remote we double check & find in the description & in the compatibility photo that this Aftermarket remote is compatible with our Genuine PTX-4 Blue Remote.

I) So we now have two options we can select from to replace our existing Remote - a Genuine ATA PTX-4 Blue Remote or an Aftermarket Compatible PTX-4 Remote. 

2. Model: 

Our website also enables you to search by Model number.  Some Remotes will have their model number (usually on the back, but it can also occasionally be on the front of the Remote).  If you can't find anything that looks like a model number on your Remote, have a look on the back & side panels of your Garage Door Motor.  Once you have a remote control or garage door or Gate opener Model number you can enter that into our Search Bar at the top of the page & hit 'Enter' on your keyboard & our website will display all Remotes matching your Model number.  To help we've added an example of how to Search By Model on our website: 

Garage Motor Model search -

A) Here is our example Garage Door Motor we are going to search for on the website.  We have identified the brand is Dominator & the Model number is GDO-11V1 found on the back panel of the motor:

B) We head to the Remote Warehouse website & enter in the Brand + Model number to the Search Bar at the top of the page & hit 'Enter' to search for that model.

C) Here are our results for all Garage Door Remotes that mention that particular combination of brand + Model.  We find the remote we think is a match & click on it:

A) If we know what model our Garage Door or Gate Remote is we can enter that into the Search bar at the top of the page.  In the example below my B&D branded Remote's model number is TB-7V1:

E) Just to be totally sure we have the correct remote, we enlarge the photo that shows the front + back view of the red remote & compare it with our existing remote to see it matches exactly. So we can now confirm that this is the correct remote to purchase.

You'll need a small screwdriver, typically a Phillips or flathead, to open the remote's casing.

2. Open the Remote

Look on your remote for any screw/s (sometimes the screw/s are embedded deeper than surface level so what might appear as just a hole on your remote will have actually have a screw in it to open your remote) If you can’t find any screw/s, your remote will have have an indented area somewhere along its edges where you can gently unclip it using a flathead screwdriver or similar to open it.  

Top Tip: Remember to store any screws removed in the opening process in a safe place so they don’t get lost & you can put your remote back together once the battery is changed.

3. Replace the Battery

Once the remote is open, locate the old battery. Carefully remove it and replace it with a new one of the same type, ensuring it's inserted with the correct polarity (positive and negative ends).

4. Close the Remote

Put the remote's cover back in place and secure it with screws or clip back together.

5. Test Your Remote

Press the buttons on your remote to ensure it's working correctly with the new battery.

Note: You should not need to reprogramme your remote after changing the battery as this does not affect how the remote is already memorised/stored in your garage door or gate opener’s memory. 

Top tip: Remember to dispose of the old battery properly by recycling it at an appropriate facility.

1. Garage Door Remote: 

The number one culprit for your Garage Door opening randomly is your Garage Door Remote.  It also happens to be the easiest & cheapest fix out of the three possibilities. 

A) Have a quick look over all your Garage Door Remotes.  Are the buttons clean & free from debris?  Are any of the buttons are stuck in the 'pushed' in position? Having the buttons stuck in the pushed in position can lead to a confused signal with the Remote trying to open & close the Garage Door all the time.  Give all your remotes a good wipe over to make sure there's nothing stuck in or around the buttons too that can cause this.  If your Remote is old & the buttons keep getting stuck in this position it might be worth replacing the Remote.  Take a look at Remote Warehouse's range of all Remotes Here, or check out our handy guide What Garage Remote Do I need to help you select the correct Replacement Remote to work with your Garage Door or Gate.   

B) When was the last time you replaced the battery in your Remote/s?  Try changing the battery in each Remote to see if this makes a difference.  You can purchase Batteries Here for your Garage Door Remotes.

2. Garage Door: 

The number two reason for your Garage Door opening randomly is your Garage Door itself or to be more exact the Safety Sensors on it. All Garage Doors manufactured after 1993 incorporated Safety Sensors which enabled it to 'sense' if the descending door hit an object.  If the door hit an object the sensors would relay this to the motor & the door would ascend back up to prevent the object or effectively the person or animal from being crushed by the door.

A) With this in mind have a thorough check around your Garage Door & the door tracks to make sure there is nothing in the way blocking it from closing.  Some doors are more sensitive than others, so anything no matter how small you think is potentially in the way of the closing door should be moved. 

B) Also check the condition of the Garage Door tracks as if they are bumped or bent, this can misalign or damage the Safety Sensors & cause the Door to randomly open also.

3. Garage Door Motor: 

The number three reason your Garage Door is opening randomly is your Garage Door Motor.  Unfortunately this also happens to be the most expensive & technical problem requiring an expert to fix it.

A) Electrical surges, stormy weather can disrupt and damage the circuit/logic board or short circuit wiring in your Garage Door Motor effectively causing it to send the wrong signals to your Garage Door. In this case we suggest hiring a Garage Door Specialist or Electrician to identify & fix or replace the damaged parts.  In the event replacement parts are not available for purchase (usually due to the age of the Garage Door Motor), replacing the entire unit may be a cheaper solution - take a look at our range of Garage door motors Here

Don’t panic, plan
