Is a Garage Door Receiver Kit right for me?

You may have been recommended by one of the team at Remote Warehouse to purchase a Garage Door Receiver Kit – but you might be wondering what this is, how it works and whether it’s the right solution for your garage door.

In this guide we explain exactly what a Garage Door Receiver Kit is, why you might need one, how easy it is to install and how to determine if it’s the right option for your setup.

What is a Garage Door Receiver Kit?

A Garage Door receiver Kit is an independent standalone receiver that can be mounted or attached to the exterior of your existing Garage Door Opener to provide a secondary receiver or take the place of your Garage Door Opener’s existing receiver board when it has degraded or failed. It is a cost-effective solution to replacing an entire Garage Door Opener if the only problem is the internal receiver board no longer receiving a signal from remotes to open and close your garage door or when you can no longer get remotes for your brand and model of Garage Door Opener.

Why do I need a Garage Door Receiver Kit?

On some older Garage Door Opener Motors there are no longer any reliable Genuine Replacement or Aftermarket Compatible Remotes available which may be due to:

The era or frequency of your Garage Door Opener or a combination of those two things which means replacement remotes are no longer available.

You have an uncommon brand that is no longer in existence or has left the New Zealand market, so replacement parts and accessories are unable to be sourced.

You have an ageing Garage Door Opener & remotes with diminished signal and replacing them with new remotes hasn’t improved the problem.

How do I install a Garage Door Receiver Kit?

This is an easy straight forward DIY process that you can do yourself without the need for an electrician and will take you around 10 to 15 minutes to do. In most cases you will either need to insert the plugs attached to your receiver kit into the accessory terminals of your Garage Door opener or wrap the wires attached to the receiver kit around the accessory terminals on your garage door opener similar to the examples shown below. Full support by email, phone or live chat is provided should you need further help & all our Garage Door Receiver Kits come with easy-to-follow instruction manuals specific to your brand and model of garage door opener with clear diagrams & photos showing you exactly how to set up and attach the Garage Door Receiver kit.

Does the Garage Door Receiver Kit come with everything I need for installation?

Our Garage Door Receiver Kits will come with everything you need for set up, including a pre-wired receiver, mounting/fixing tape, instruction manual & 2x preprogrammed remotes. The receiver has capacity to store up to 100 remotes in its memory so adding further remotes is no problem and programming these into the receiver is super simple (instructions are included in your Receiver Kit manual). More remotes can be purchased separately from our online store, and we also stock a range of upgrade remote styles, accessories such as sun visor clips & wall brackets (to turn your remote into a wall mount remote) for your new Garage Door Receiver Kit.

Top Sales to Upgrade Your Garage, Gate, and Car Alarm Remotes in NZ

Sales are the perfect time to replace your dodgy remotes or upgrade to something a bit more reliable. Between garage doors, gates, car alarms and family vehicles, most Kiwi households juggle more remotes than you’d think. When one starts to fail, or you suddenly need a spare, it’s always nicer to get a backup at a discounted price rather than paying full dealership costs.

Remote Warehouse makes it easy to upgrade the remotes you rely on. Everything is DIY friendly, shipping is free across New Zealand, and most replacements take only a few minutes to set up. If you’ve been putting off buying something new, these discounted remotes, batteries and key shells might just be the nudge you’ve been waiting for.

Garage Door Remotes for Sale

Depending on where you store your garage door remote, it can take a beating over time, particularly if it’s clipped to your keys. A new remote gives you more responsive buttons, reliable range and less risk of leaving you locked out.

Depending on the make and model of your garage door, you’ll find single-button remotes and multi-button remotes available on sale. Not sure what you’re after? Get in touch, and our team will be happy to help.

Gate Remotes for Sale

If your gate remote has faded buttons, cracked casing or an unreliable range, a replacement is a quick fix. Even if yours still has a bit of life left in it, it’s worth picking up a spare while prices are reduced.

As always, before replacing a remote, it’s worth investigating first. If every remote in your household has suddenly stopped working, that usually points to a gate system issue. In that case, it’s best to contact your installer or gate technician first.

Discounted Car Alarm Remotes and Shells

Key shells and alarm remotes are one of our best-selling products because they face a lot of wear and tear. Whether you’ve just bought a used car with an iffy alarm remote or you’ve run over a brand new one, a fresh shell or full replacement car alarm remote doesn’t need to cost the earth.

If the right remote for your car brand and model is on sale, it’s worth grabbing a few spares so you can give one to a second driver and keep one at home as backup. All products on our sale page include compatibility details to help you choose the right fit.

Batteries and Other DIY Essentials

The vast majority of remote issues come down to weak remote batteries. Replacing yours takes seconds and can usually fix intermittent range or buttons that only work sometimes. It’s worth keeping a couple of spares, so you’re never caught out.

You’ll find the relevant batteries listed in our dropdown menu below garage, gate, auto and home categories.

Shop Sale Remotes at Remote Warehouse

Along with our great range of remotes on sale, you can also browse our full catalogue and filter by the brand & model you need. We offer both genuine and aftermarket remotes and provide a 10% discount when buying two or more remotes of any type.

If you’d like a hand choosing the right remote or battery, get in touch, and our team can point you in the right direction.

Padlocks for Home vs Commercial Use

Choosing the right padlock might seem like a small decision, but it makes a big difference to how secure your property is. Not all padlocks are created equal, and many don’t do more than provide a visual deterrent. If you want a padlock that actually prevents intrusion, this article is for you.

Across New Zealand, padlocks are commonly used on home gates, garages, sheds, and workshops, as well as on commercial storage cages, site boxes, and business gates. The good news is that to upgrade or replace padlocks is usually a simple DIY job, and it’s an easy way to improve security without calling in trades or specialists.

At Remote Warehouse, you’ll find a wide range of padlocks suitable for both home and commercial use, making it easy to choose an option that fits your setup and security needs.

Key Considerations When Choosing Padlocks

The needs of a family home are quite different from those of a workshop, storage unit, or business premises, and using the wrong type of lock can leave you exposed or frustrated. Here are some of the different factors to consider when choosing a padlock.

Security level

Padlocks for home use are often designed to balance affordability, ease of use and security. Commercial padlocks are typically heavier, tougher, and harder to tamper with. While a standard garden shed may only need a home padlock, if you’re storing high value equipment, it’s worth choosing a commercial padlock that provides a higher level of protection.

Material and durability

Material makes a noticeable difference to the longevity of a padlock, especially outdoors. Brass padlocks are common for indoor or sheltered use, while stainless steel and laminated steel offer better resistance to rust. Hardened shackles are often used on heavy-duty padlocks for commercial or high-traffic areas.

Size and shackle type

Before buying, check the size of the hasp, chain, or latch you’re locking. A padlock that’s too small won’t fit properly, while one that’s too large can allow movement or weak points.

Keyed or combination

Some people favour keyed padlocks, where a single key can open multiple locks - it’s certainly easier for your keyring! Combination padlocks can be useful when several people require access, but they may not be suitable for high-security scenarios. Consider how you plan on using the padlock, and then choose a style that suits.

Benefits of Upgrading or Replacing Padlocks

If you’re struggling with stiff keys or corrosion, it’s usually easier and quicker to replace padlock hardware than to keep fighting with it. Lost keys, unknown duplicates, or changing security needs are also good reasons to upgrade.

Replacing an old or worn lock can instantly improve security and peace of mind. Most are designed for DIY replacement, so there’s no need for professional services.

Choose the Right Padlock with Remote Warehouse

Whether you’re securing a home gate or upgrading locks at a business, it’s worth taking the time to pick the right padlock for the job.
How to Choose the Right Wall-Mounted Garage Remote Button

Wall-mounted garage remote buttons are a small but essential part of keeping your garage access simple and seamless. Whether you’re replacing a faulty button or adding a second one near an internal entry point, choosing the right model comes down to a few key details.

This guide covers what to look for, what to avoid, and how to find a compatible replacement quickly.

What Is a Wall-Mounted Garage Remote?

Not to be confused with an exterior keypad or a handheld garage door remote that you might keep in your car, a wall-mounted garage remote is a small wireless button designed for indoor use only. You’ll typically find them near a garage’s internal access door or light switch.

They’re battery-powered, easy to install, and allow you to open or close the garage door on your way out, without reaching for your main remote.

Choosing the Right Remote: 5 Key Considerations

Before adding a new wall-mounted garage remote button to your setup, here are the five most important factors to help you choose confidently and correctly.

1. Check Compatibility First

Garage remote buttons aren’t universal. Each model is designed to work with specific garage door motors, so it’s important to match your remote with the make and model of your existing opener.

At Remote Warehouse, every product listing clearly shows which openers the remote will work with. If you’re still unsure, contact us before purchasing.

2. Decide on Button Type

Wall-mounted garage remotes come in:

Single-button models – to control one door

Multi-button models – for properties with two or more garage doors or roller doors

If multiple people in your household will be using it, larger buttons with tactile feedback can also make things easier.

3. Choose a Safe, Accessible Mounting Spot

Wall-mounted garage remotes must be installed inside the garage only. They’re designed for convenience, but they open your garage door (and in some cases, your whole home) with just a single press, so security is key.

Install the button:

At a comfortable height for adults (out of reach of toddlers)

Near the internal access door or light switch

Away from sunlight, moisture, or high-impact areas

Never mount these remotes on external walls, in exposed areas, or anywhere someone could press them without entering the garage first. They don’t require a PIN, so placing them in unsecured locations poses a serious security risk.

4. Understand the Power Source

Most wall-mounted remotes are battery-operated. Check:

What battery type is required

How easy it is to access and replace the battery when needed

Always try a new battery before replacing a remote that seems unresponsive.

5. Consider a Wall-Mount Bracket for Your Handheld Remote

If your existing handheld remote still works, but you’d like the convenience of wall access, a wall-mount bracket might be all you need.

This low-cost add-on holds your handheld remote in place on the wall, great for keeping it accessible without needing a second remote.

Explore our wall-mount brackets here. Each listing shows remotes compatible with that bracket, so you can be sure of your choice.

Signs It Might Be Time for a Replacement

Consider upgrading your wall-mounted garage button if:

It’s no longer responding, even with a new battery

The casing is cracked, or buttons are worn down

You’ve changed garage door openers and your old button is no longer compatible

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the compatibility check – Always confirm the button works with your garage door opener model

Mounting in the wrong spot – Remember, these remotes are strictly for internal use

Replacing without testing the battery – A new battery could save you the cost of a new unit

When your automatic gate remote stops working, it’s not just annoying.

Whether you were just heading off to work or arriving home with a carload of grizzly kids, a stuck gate can throw your schedule into complete chaos: setting off a chain of consequences that will leave you frustrated, frazzled, and frantically searching for a solution.

Before you assume something major has gone wrong, know this: in most cases, the issue is with the remote itself, not the gate system.

At Remote Warehouse, we specialise in helping Kiwis identify and fix everyday gate remote issues quickly and affordably. If you’re dealing with an unresponsive gate system, here’s what to know first…

It’s often easy to tell when your gate remote is on the way out. Watch for:

One remote not working, while your backup or spare still does. This points to an issue with that individual remote – most likely the battery or internal wear.

Inconsistent signal (it only works sometimes, or up close). A weak battery or internal interference can reduce the remote’s range or responsiveness.

Stuck buttons or cracked casing. Wear and tear, exposure to the elements, or dropping your remote from a height can affect how buttons connect internally.

Remote feels loose, worn, or rattly. If the shell is damaged or the internal components have shifted, it may stop registering button presses correctly.

If any of these sound familiar, the fix could be simpler than you think. A fresh battery or a replacement shell is often all you need.

Easy Troubleshooting Steps for Gate Remotes

In some cases your remote itself may have done its dash.

Replacing your remote is easy. We sell an extensive range of gate remotes online, and you can contact our team for help selecting the right one. Just try these simple DIY steps first to rule out other issues:

Swap out the battery – A flat battery is the most common culprit for an unresponsive gate remote. Try a fresh one first.

Test a spare remote – If you have a second remote that works, you’ll know the issue is isolated.

Check the casing and buttons – A cracked or water-damaged shell can affect performance. We sell replacement shells if yours is still functioning but structurally compromised.

Try reprogramming or resyncing – If instructions are available for your model, try re-pairing the remote to the receiver. Not all remotes require this, but some do after battery changes.

Keep a backup battery handy – Especially for rural properties or tradies on the move. Having a spare can save a lot of stress.

When It Might Not Be the Remote

If all of your gate remotes stop working at the same time – or if they still don’t respond after battery replacement and basic checks – it’s likely not the remote after all.

If this is the case, the problem is likely with your gate motor itself - such as the receiver that picks up signals from your remote, the wiring, or another fault within the motor. Remote Warehouse doesn’t diagnose or repair these issues; our expertise is in replacing garage and gate remotes.

In these cases, we recommend contacting a qualified gate technician or electrician.

When to Buy a New Remote

If your remote…

Has water damage

Won’t respond after battery replacement

Has a cracked, faded, or worn-out shell

…it might be time for a new one.

Equally, if you need a backup remote for emergencies, or to give to an additional household member, we can help – browse our full range of gate remotes to get started.

Between tradies on the move, holiday homeowners, and those of us that like to keep a spare remote in a secret outdoor spot, it’s common for Kiwis to store car or garage remotes outside.

And while it might seem harmless to leave a remote in a shed, under the car, or inside a toolbox, New Zealand’s extreme weather, temperature swings, and salty coastal air can take a real toll on these electronics over time.

At Remote Warehouse, we help Kiwis keep their remotes working longer with smart, affordable protection. Here's what to know about storing remotes outdoors – and how to avoid damage before it happens.

Why Outdoor Storage Can Damage Your Remote

Most garage remotes and car key shells aren’t designed to handle the elements. When stored outside or in vehicles long term, they’re exposed to:

Moisture and rain: Even in a sealed container, humidity or leaks can get in, causing corrosion or short-circuiting.

Sun damage: UV rays can crack, fade, or weaken plastic shells over time.

Heat exposure: Interiors of vehicles or metal storage boxes can get scorching hot, leading to warping or battery leaks.

Dust and grit: Job sites, farm vehicles, and beachside homes all bring fine particles that work their way into buttons and seams.

Cracked or ageing shells: Once the casing is compromised, internal components are far more vulnerable to the elements.

5 Ways to Protect Remotes Stored Outdoors

With a few simple habits and the right products, you can store your remote securely – even outside.

Upgrade the Shell
A new garage door remote case adds an extra layer of defence against moisture and impact. If your current remote is showing signs of wear, it’s worth upgrading the shell before it fails.

Store in a Sealed Container or Key Hider
Whether you’re keeping a spare car key under the vehicle or leaving a garage remote for guests, use a proper lock box designed for storing keys and garage remotes, or a key hider that’s waterproof and tamper-resistant.

Avoid Direct Sunlight
Store your remotes in shaded areas or away from windows inside vehicles. Prolonged UV exposure is one of the fastest ways to weaken plastic and reduce lifespan.

Replace Shells and Batteries Regularly
Even with great storage, materials degrade over time. Proper remote key protection includes checking your shell’s condition and swapping out worn batteries to keep functionality strong.

Keep a Backup
For work vehicles or shared garages, it’s smart to keep a spare remote stored indoors, just in case your outdoor unit fails.

When to Replace or Repair Your Remote Shell

If your remote is showing any of the following signs, it’s time to take action:

Buttons feel sticky or sunken

Plastic is cracked or brittle

Remote intermittently works (especially after rain)

You notice corrosion or rust in the battery area

In most cases, you don’t need a brand-new remote. Just replace the outer shell – no reprogramming required. It’s quick, cost-effective, and easy to do yourself with Remote Warehouse’s DIY Shell Replacement Guide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using unsealed containers that let moisture in

Forgetting about backup remotes stored in vehicles or toolboxes

Delaying a shell replacement after signs of damage

Overlooking the battery – especially after long storage periods

Protecting Your Remote Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

With the right remote shell and a few smart storage habits, you can extend the life of your car key or garage remote, even when it lives outdoors.

At Remote Warehouse, we stock a full range of garage remotes, garage remote shells, car key shells, gate remotes, batteries and other accessories, all shipped fast from our NZ base and backed by a 12-month warranty.

When to Replace Your Car Key Shell – And How to Do It Yourself

If your car key is starting to look a little worse for wear – sticky buttons, cracked plastic, or a key blade that feels a bit loose – don’t head to the dealership just yet. In most cases, all you need is a new key shell.

At Remote Warehouse, we help Kiwis repair and refresh their car remotes every day with affordable replacement shells and easy DIY solutions. No reprogramming. No stress. No dealership markup.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Car Key Shell?

The shell is the outer casing of your car key remote. It protects the internal electronics (including the circuit board and transponder chip) and houses the key blade. While the inside of your remote might still be working perfectly, a damaged or broken shell can affect usability, durability, or even your ability to start the car.

Replacing the shell is a simple and cost-effective way to restore your remote’s look and function, without the hassle of a full replacement.

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Key Shell

Not sure if it’s time for a new shell? Here are the most common signs:

Cracked or split casing

Worn-down or unresponsive buttons

Loose or wobbly key blade

Water damage or visible corrosion

Remote no longer closes properly

If your key is held together with tape or it’s on its last legs, it’s a good idea to upgrade.

Why Replace Just the Shell?

Because there’s no need to replace the entire remote when the electronics still work. Here’s why thousands of Kiwis are choosing to swap the shell only:

Save money – A new shell is a fraction of the cost of a full remote replacement.

No programming needed – You’re keeping your original circuit board and chip.

It’s eco-friendly – Replacing only what’s broken means less waste.

Quick and easy DIY – Most shell swaps take just a few minutes.

DIY Guide: How to Replace Your Car Key Shell

You don’t need to be a tech whiz to replace your car key shell. Just follow these basic steps:

Open the old shell
Carefully use a flat tool or screwdriver to split the shell along its seam. Take your time – avoid putting pressure on the internal components.

Remove the internals
Take out the battery, circuit board, and transponder chip. This is often hidden under a small cover or inside the key blade section.

Transfer to the new shell
Place all components into the matching spots in your new shell. Make sure everything is secure – especially the chip. This is what lets your car start.

Reassemble and test
Snap the new shell together. Insert your key blade if required, and test the remote to make sure all buttons work.

Tip: Use the Remote Warehouse website filters to find the right shell by car make and model.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting the transponder chip
If you leave this behind, your car won’t start. Double-check before closing the new shell.

Damaging internal components
Be gentle when opening the shell and removing the parts.

Ordering the wrong product
Check your remote model number and compare images carefully. Still unsure? Contact us and we’ll help confirm the match.

It may have been all of a sudden or you may have noticed over time your Merlin Remote is just not working with the same old reliability it once had. Below you'll find some answers & some solutions to help you get to the bottom of why your Merlin Remote is no longer working.

Remote Battery

First things first - check if your Merlin remote's battery needs to be replaced. Make sure you use long lasting, high quality garage door remote batteries. Visit our batteries collection here to purchase a new battery for your remote & find advice here for how to change the battery on your remote.

Remote Signal

Check there is nothing obstructing your Merlin garage door opener's aerial which usually looks like a small wire hanging down from your garage door opener's motor. Sometimes adjusting the direction or position of the aerial can help improve your handheld remote/s performance & range.

Garage Door Opener power source

Your Garage Door Opener motor power source could have been turned off or disrupted. You'll need to make sure the Garage Door Opener Motor unit is plugged in to the power. You may require an electrician to inspect the circuit breaker, fuse or GFCI.

Garage Door Opener Motor malfunction

Sometimes it can just be a simple restart of the Garage Motor unit (Turn the Motor off at the power source, leave for 30 secs before switching on again) that can restore things back to normal function.

Garage Remote/s reset

In the event of a power cut or malfunction your Remote can be disrupted & need to be reprogrammed in order to restore transmission of signal between Remote & Garage Door. If your Remote is new, check through the instructions that came with it or contact the company you purchased from for their instruction guide. You can also find reprogramming instructions in your original Merlin Garage Door Motor booklet.

Wall Button Switch

If you have a hard wired Wall Button Switch you will need to check it still opens & closes your Garage Door. This will isolate if it is just a problem with your Garage Remote or if the problem is with your Garage Door Motor.

Other Garage Door Remotes

If you have other Merlin Garage Remotes operating the same Garage Door you will need to check if it is just the one Remote or all of the Remotes that have stopped working. If all Remotes have stopped working then it is most likely a problem with your Garage Door Opener's Motor & you will need to contact a local garage door serviceman in your area to come & take a look at the receiver board inside your motor. If it is just one Remote not working this points towards the Remote being the problem & you could safely look at replacing just that remote control with a new one which should fix the problem.

Remote controls & transmitters for Garage Door Openers have been around for over 40 years now & as you can imagine from those very first models in the 1980's to today, technology has changed dramatically. To add more complexity to the mix, many brands have also developed their own individual unique technology over time to increase protection & security to your home. This means the method in which you programme your Remote will depend on the brand & model of Garage Door Opener motor you have & the era it originates from.

The Beginning - Fixed Code / DIP Switches (earliest technology 1980's to mid 1990's)

The earliest Garage Door Remote's operated on anywhere between 27MHz to 339MHz & had a set of either 8, 10 or 12 tiny DIP Switches inside the back arranged in an up/down or up/middle/down pattern that matched the same sequence of DIP Switches found inside your Garage Door Opener Motor. This technology was known as 'fixed' code due to the code shared between your remote control & your Garage door opener's receiver always being the same. The key to programming these is to ensure any new remotes have their DIP Switch pattern set to match the same pattern inside your existing remote/s & your garage door opener. Its such a simple effective method that some industrial & commercial brands of Garage, Gate, parking complexes & buildings still use this dipswitch matching technology in their remote controls today. It means tenants & employees don't have to access the motor/control board which is often locked inside an enclosure or situated up high in the roof to programme any new remotes.

The Middle - Rolling Code Technology (late 1990's to now)

The next phase in garage remote control technology was called 'Rolling Code' or 'Code Hopping' as the code generated by & shared between the remote & your garage opener's receiver changes each time you press the button to open your garage door hence the 'Rolling' name. Programming these remotes is done by accessing the Garage door opener's control panel where there will be a dedicated programming button you press to enter programming mode & then you will press the button on your new remote once (sometimes twice depending on the brand + model) that you want to open & close your garage door which saves it into your opener's memory. The programming button is sometimes labelled 'LRN', 'Learn', 'Code Set', 'Set', 'PGM' or 'PGRM' depending on the brand & model of garage door opener you have. With so many different brands & models developed over the years there are variances in where the programme button is situated, the sequence, method & timeframe in which you have to enter & exit the programming mode on your garage door opener's control panel & the number of times you need to press the button on your remote to programme it. So it is best to consult your specific opener's manual or the instructions that come with your new garage door remote control to ensure you follow the correct method.

Recently - Code Copying Technology (Remote to Remote)

As an alternative to the older fixed code & the current rolling code remote programming methods, code copying remotes were developed. Also known as Universal Remotes, Auto Scanning & Face to Face remotes, these remotes require an existing working remote that is already programmed in to your Garage Door Opener's memory to copy the code from. The method differs slightly amongst different brands in the market but in general involves placing the original remote & the new code copying remote nose to nose / face to face (where the signal emits from each remote), pressing a button on the code copying remote to enter it into copying mode & then holding that button down & also a button that opens & closes your garage door on your original remote down in order for it to emit a signal for the code copying remote to collect & save. Once done the new code copying remote will now operate your garage door opener if your original remote was an old fixed code type. If your old remote was a rolling code style you may need to follow a short additional procedure to save it directly to your garage door opener's receiver also.

The main selling point of the code copying remotes are their ability to combine a few different remotes onto one remote, so for example your Garage Door Remote & your Gate Remote have the potential to be reduced & combined onto 1 Remote Control with a code copying remote. However it is important to note that not all remotes created are capable of being copied - there are limitations. There is no single code copying remote that exists that has the the latest up to date & retro fit capacity to copy every single remote control brand & model ever created around the world from the beginning of time to the very latest models today & also Patents mean legally some remotes cannot be copied also. Remote Warehouse stocks 2 brands of code copying remotes, Remote King Australia's Smooth Operator Remote & Italfile's IRIS & PRIME Remotes from Italy. The Smooth Operator is a great option for many common Australasian brands, while the Italfile IRIS & PRIME are excellent for many European garage & gate brands.

If your car remote is still working but the shell is cracked or broken or the buttons have fallen out or missing, replacing the exterior case/shell is your most economical option. Car remotes & keys are designed to last a long time, however the hard plastic can degrade or crack if left out in the elements, run over or dropped etc. Remote Warehouse stocks a wide range of replacement car key remote cases & car key shells for most brands in the New Zealand market.

How do I know which replacement case or shell to purchase?

Replacing the exterior case or shell on your car remote or car key needn't be difficult. The 3 main things you need to look at & consider when purchasing a replacement car remote case or car key shell are:

Your Car Brand - Ensure you are looking at replacement shell options that are for your particular brand of car only. The model & year can sometimes help narrow it down but with so many variables within certain years it is best to keep it simple by looking firstly at replacement cases & shells listed under your car's brand & not worrying too much about the model & year. If you have a car alarm installed you will need to be looking for replacement remote case options for the brand of car alarm system you have rather than the brand/make of car you have.

Your original car remote or car key design & shape - Once you have narrowed down your search to those only for your brand of car or car alarm system then you can look at the options available for your particular shell or case design within those for your brand of car or car alarm system. Compare your existing car remote, car alarm remote or car key's front & back & also inside front & back with the photos on our website to narrow down the best matching option/s.

The key blade style on your original car key - Lastly if you are looking for a replacement car key shell rather than a replacement remote case you will need to ensure you select the replacement key shell that has the same blade type as your original key. Once you've narrowed down the options for your car brand & that match closest in design & shape on the front + back & inside front + back to your existing car key you may find you have a couple of options that all look the same. The difference you may not have noticed between these is the key blade design. Make sure you are holding your key with the blade in the same direction & on the side as the photos to check before you order. as some blades also have have a right or left option in their design. If in doubt Contact Us for help & we can assist in ensuring you get the correct replacement car key shell & blade combination.

How do I fit my new replacement car remote case or car key shell?

Fitting the new replacement case or shell is relatively simple. Most car remotes & car keys simply unclip or unscrew to come apart & you can remove the circuit board & chip (if you have a chip) & insert them into the new case or shell & clip or screw the new one back together. Look for any small screws or grooves or indents along the edges of your old remote or car key case to open it & use a flathead screwdriver to gently unclip it. As you are just moving the circuit board over there is no need to reprogram your remote so it will work exactly as it did before you replaced the case.

*Please note if you buy a replacement car key shell with a key blade you will need to take this to your local car key shop to be cut as most are molded into the key shell section.

Whether replacing an old T-Handle lock or installing a new one from scratch onto your Garage, shed, barn, storage unit, commercial or industrial premise's door there are a few things to consider. We've created a helpful guide to take you through the options available so you can decide which T-Handle best fits your requirements.

What T-Handle do I need:

There a few things to consider when looking to replace an existing T-Handle or adding a new one & this can seem daunting when faced with the selection on offer, so we've broken it down into the 3 main points to think about prior to purchasing:

1. Material: Remote Warehouse stocks 2 brands, our metal (solid diecast zinc alloy) T-Handles from Lock Focus which are Australian designed & manufactured & our black (super strong fibre reinforced plastic) T-Handles from Heller which are designed & manufactured right here in New Zealand.

2. Fixing Style: Once you've decided what material you want, your next decision is to decide if you want a front fixing tee handle or a rear fixing tee handle.

Front fix (also known as Through fix) T-Handles styles are attached & fitted through the front of your door into the front of the T-Handle. The simplest method to install & replace but less secure due to the fixings being visible from the outside if security is of the utmost importance.

Rear fix (also known as Concealed fix) T-Handles are attached & fitted through the rear of your door into the back of the T-Handle. This method is slightly more difficult to attach but offers a higher level of security as the handle cannot be unscrewed & removed from the front & a more aesthetically pleasing look with the fixings being hidden.

3. Key Measurements: When retro-fitting / replacing an existing T-Handle you will need to remove it & check the spindle length & bolt hole distance measurements (shown below). These are the 2 main measurements you will need to look for & match when purchasing you're new replacement T-Handle. If installing a brand new T-Handle you have more flexibility & the T-Handle you select will be dependent on things such as the door width. Full specs & exact measurements for all of our T-Handles can be found under the 'Specifications' drop down tab in each T-Handle product listing.

Protect your business from break-ins, theft & ram raids

When securing your commercial or industrial property, businesses often neglect to secure their roller, shutter or tilt-a garage doors properly. Whilst securing the chain on your roller & shutter doors to the wall or using slide bolts on your tilt-a doors lock the door on either side they don't protect the entry point fully & leave the middle of your door as a weak point to target for ram raiders. One of the best ways you can protect your business is to install dead locks on the concrete floor to your garage door which anchor your door to the ground & create a much stronger brace against forced entry & ram raids.

Xtra-Lok Security Floor Lock Systems

Remote Warehouse stocks Australian brand Xtratec's specialist Xtra-Lok floor locking systems. Established in 1999, these are designed & made in Australia specifically to protect industrial & commercial buildings using roll up, shutter & tilt-a style Garage Doors from ram raids. They also act as excellent wind anchors in high wind areas.

Check them out in action preventing ram raid attempts:

We stock all 3 models of Xtra-Lok; XL1A for flat concrete floors, XL2A for stepped concrete floors and XL2A-EXT an exterior model with a padlock shield for added protection. All models come with a fold down flap to allow forklift and truck access without damaging the lock & come ready to install with all fixings included with purchase. Its recommended to install 2 Xtra-Lok systems if your door is over 2.4m wide & there is 10% off when purchasing 2 or more of these from Remote Warehouse.

All Xtra-Lok Locking Systems should be paired with a high quality padlock

We recommend buying an equally high quality security padlock to pair with your Xtra-Lok. If you are investing in a good quality locking system it makes sense to not skimp on the padlock you pair with it. Remote Warehouse has created packages pairing each Xtra-Lok model (XL1A / XL2A / XL2A-EXT) with our recommended padlock option/s. You will find these as 'Options' within each style's product listing on our website (shown in the example below). Simply click on the Xtra-Lok style that best fits your needs & click on the options shown in that product to select & view the price & what each option includes. You can also see our entire padlock range Here to purchase separately.

Car key safe for surfers available in New Zealand

Protecting your keys, remotes, cash, cards & other small valuables from thieves while surfing or partaking in any other outdoor pursuit is made easier & more secure by placing them inside a car key safe. Theft is on the rise & certain areas & situations are hot spots for thieves, providing easy pickings & while no one can guarantee total security from having your vehicle or valuables stolen, you can take some extra steps to make it harder & less desirable for them to attempt to:

- Avoid parking in remote secluded areas if possible.

- Avoid leaving valuables easily visible in your vehicle.

- Avoid hiding keys/remotes on or around your vehicle - especially on top of your tyre.

- If your vehicle has a removable top, canopy or roof box or pod make sure you secure & lock them.

- Store your car keys, fobs & remotes & other small valuables in a key safe or lock box.

What is a Car Key Safe?

A Car Key Safe or sometimes also known as a Lock Box is essentially a portable or wall mountable miniature safe. They come in a variety of sizes with varying internal storage capacity & use a variety of opening methods with 4 digit combination, push button, keypad & Bluetooth options available. Whilst many are wall mounted & made to secure to a surface wall, some versions have a detachable shackle or cable enabling you to secure the key safe onto your vehicles tow bar, door handle, wing mirror or lock it onto a metal pole close to where you surf.

Our Key Safe & Lock Box recommendations for surfers:

Probably our favourite & fast becoming our most popular are the 2 portable key safe options from Master Lock's latest range. Featuring one of the largest internal storage capacity areas for holding keys, remotes, fobs, cards & more on the market & available in 2 options (with a shackle or with a cable), the MA5480 & MA5482 are both great options for surfers. A rubber back on both prevents scratches & marks on your cars paintwork & the weather resistant body & shutter door over the 4 digit combination dial lock offers a simple & effective protection for your keys, remotes & more.

Another great option is the Master Lock MA5414 which is one of the strongest & heaviest key safes on the market & features a heavy duty metal body, shackle & foam covered back to protect your car or other surface against scratches & impact. A great option where something a little more solid is required.

Finally for those early morning & evening starts where light is an issue we have the Master Lock MA5424 light up dial Key Safe with shackle & rubber back to protect your car from scratches. A full length weather shield covers dials when not in use & the dials light up in low light conditions to help you easily & quickly maneuver the dials to your opening combination.

Note - those with newer vehicles using key fob proximity technology will need to invest in a faraday (signal blocking) pouch or wrap to block the signal transmitting from your vehicle's key fob to your vehicle when using a key safe or lock box.

How to programme a Merlin Garage Door Remote Control

Having trouble programming your Merlin Garage Door Remote? Check out our blog post which includes full instructions to help you program your Merlin Remote. We also cover where to find the 'LEARN' button on your Merlin garage door motor unit.

More

Merlin branded Garage Door Openers & Remote Controls have been around for over 40 years now & remain one of New Zealand's most enduring & popular brands. Part of the large Chamberlain group which is made up of such brands as Merlin, Chamberlain, Motorlift, Homentry, Liftmaster you can be sure they are on top of the latest advancements in security to keep one of the main points of entry into your house (your Garage Door) safe & secure from unwanted access.
Advances in technology through the years mean the method in which to programme your Merlin Remote has changed & evolved so the best way forward is to figure out what era of Merlin Remote you have...

The Beginning - Dipswitches (earliest technology 1980's to mid 1990's)

Merlin's earliest remote's shown below operated on 303MHz or 339MHz & had a set of either 8 or 12 tiny dipswitches inside the back which was how you programmed them to operate your Merlin Garage Door Opener. Some even incorporated a small side switch that could be either up or down. Due to the obscure combination of frequencies with number of dipswitches (which varied according to the button colour of your Merlin remote) there is no longer a direct genuine Merlin replacement or an off the shelf compatible/aftermarket remote available for these & most companies will recommend updating to a brand new Garage Door Opener Motor.

Remote Warehouse understands this can be expensive & frustrating especially when your Merlin Garage Door Opener itself is still performing well. So we are pleased to say there are a couple of solutions we have up our sleeve to help you:

- If you still have an original Merlin Remote we can create a new modern Smooth Operator Remote for you that matches your old remote's settings (shown below)

- If you no longer have a remote we can provide a new add on receiver kit with 2x modern 433MHz remotes that attaches to your old opener.

Click Here to find out more about our options.

Merlin Blue - Legacy Range Dipswitches (1996 - 2001)

The next generation of remotes from Merlin standardised a set frequency (40MHz) & set of 12 dipswitches. The good news Merlin still supports this era with the Genuine M802 blue button Sun Visor style remote still in production today & available to purchase Here (All other styles in this range have been discontinued).

Programming is very simple & a matter of removing the battery cover or back cover from your old remote & your new remote to expose the set of 12 tiny dipswitches in each. Simply match the pattern the dipswitches in your old remote are arranged in (up or down) on your new remote & it will work instantly. If you don't have any old original remotes remaining you can find the same set of 8 tiny dipswitches on the outside of your Garage Door Opener's motor & simply match that pattern onto your new remote. Super simple!!

Merlin Green - Legacy Range Rolling Code (2001 - 2007)

The end of dipswitches & beginning of rolling code technology. Merlin's very popular legacy green range shown below is still supported by Merlin with the Genuine M842 2 button key ring style remote still available for purchase Here (all other styles in this range have been discontinued).

Programming any of the below remotes became a bit more advanced but a lot less involved - no fiddly opening up remotes & setting tiny switches. Instead programming was done via a 'LEARN' button found on the Garage Door Opener's motor. The 'LEARN' button can be found hidden underneath a Green strip on your Garage Door Opener's motor (Hint: sometimes you will need to remove the white light cover on your Garage Door Opener to find the Green Strip that hides the 'LEARN' Button). Once you've found the 'LEARN' button press it once for 1-2 seconds & release, then on your remote press the button you wish to programme for 1 second, release & then press it again for 1 second to confirm & that is it your Remote is programmed.

Merlin Security+ Technology

All remotes from this era are easily identified by having a Merlin+ logo on the front. Be careful not to confuse this range with the very similar but later Merlin+ 2.0 range as they are not compatible with each other (remotes will have Merlin+ 2.0 written on the front). The entire Security+ range from Merlin has been recently discontinued & replaced with the latest dual technology Merlin Premium+ Range. You can shop Here to easily find your old original Merlin remote & discover its latest upgraded version for purchase.

Programming the Security+ range of remotes is done via the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel. On some Merlin Door Opener's the control panel will be hidden underneath the motor's light cover. The 'LEARN' button will be marked 'LEARN' or 'LRN' & is usually a square Orange or Purple coloured button. Simply take the your Merlin remote & hold down the button you wish to programme & at the same time press & release the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel, then release the button you have been holding down on your remote. Programming complete!

Merlin Security+ 2.0 Technology

All remotes from the Merlin Security+ 2.0 range are identified by having Merlin+ 2.0 on the front. They are not compatible with the previous & very similar Merlin Security+ Range which are distinguished from each other by having either Merlin+ or Merlin+ 2.0 printed on the front of the remote. This entire range is also in the process of being phased out by Merlin & replaced with the latest Merlin Premium+ Range which combines the technology from both Security+ & Security+ 2.0 ranges. You can shop Here for the remaining stock we have of the Security+ 2.0 Range & also the latest updated options to replace your discontinued Security+ 2.0 remotes.

Programming the Security+ 2.0 range of remotes is done via the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's control panel. Easy peasy!

Today - Merlin Premium+ Technology

Merlin’s latest Premium+ technology combines both the previous Security+ & Security+ 2.0 Technologies onto one remote. So the entire range (shown below) is backwards compatible with both previous Merlin Security+ & Security+ 2.0 ranges. This is great for those that have 2 or more garage doors or a garage door & gate that are each currently operated by Merlin motors/receivers but from differing Merlin eras that until now had 2 different remotes to operate them (Security+ & Security+ 2.0 eras only) You can learn more & shop Here for the latest Merlin Premium+ range.

The programming method with these is fairly straight forward & just the same as the 2 previous generations where you will need to find the 'LEARN' button on your Garage Door Opener's motor & follow the same method of holding down the remote button & pressing & releasing the 'LEARN' button. The only difference on these latest Merlin Remotes is because they are dual technology you may need to perform a simple procedure on the remote first to switch it between the two programming modes (Security+ or Security+ 2.0). By default new remotes arrive in Security+ 2.0 mode. By holding down the left & right buttons of the remote until the Remote's LED stays on you switch it over to the older Security+ mode. Once you have set the remote to the correct era to match your Merlin Garage Door Opener you can proceed to programme it into your Garage Door Opener's motor.

Remote Warehouse is New Zealand’s largest online retail store of Garage & Gate Remote Controls. We stock over 300 different varieties across all brands, from ACDC to Windsor, genuine to compatible, remotes over 40 years old to the very latest remote models. We understand the sheer volume of remote control options available can make your search seem rather daunting. Especially if you have an older hard to find Garage Door or Gate Remote, but we cannot stress enough how important it is to select the correct remote for your particular brand & model of Garage Door Opener. A common mistake we see people make is to think they only need to match the frequency of their current remote. While this is important it doesn't mean that any remote with the same frequency will work with your Garage Door or Gate Opener. If you consider how many different brands & models of Garage Door & Gate Openers there have been over the last 30 or more years, all developing & improving on their own unique technology to keep your home secure it will give you some idea of how many variables there can be.

Below is our brief guide to help you decipher some of the options available for those with old, hard to find or obsolete remote controls & spoiler alert: despite what you may have been told, no you don’t have to go out & buy a whole new Garage Door Opener!!!

Original Remotes

For some older remotes the original is still in production which is amazing & means you can replace your original remote with exactly the same remote!

A good example that springs to mind is the Merlin M802 (Shown below on our website) which began life in 1996 & is still being manufactured today almost 30 years on.

Updated Genuine Branded Remotes

For the majority of remote models around 5-10 years old, the original manufacturer has updated it with a newer model which may look very different from the remote in your hand. On the one hand this is a good thing that the manufacturer is still supporting their old remote’s & systems but on the other hand it poses a problem when you are scouring the internet for the remote you have which has since been discontinued. To make your search easier, we at Remote Warehouse provide active product listings for all old/obsolete/discontinued remote models so you can still easily find the remote that looks like your original one. Once in that product listing it will clearly show & tell you what your new updated remote will look like & you can directly order through that to receive the correct updated remote model.

A great example of this is the ATA TX5 (Shown below on our website) which has now been replaced with the updated & completely different looking ATA PTX-4.

Compatible Aftermarket Remotes

With many of the really old remotes you will find technology has moved on & the original manufacturer has chosen to no longer support or provide an updated replacement option or the company itself is no longer in operation. In these instances we will recommend a Compatible or Aftermarket Remote option for you. The terms Compatible & Aftermarket simply mean the remote is not a Genuine Branded item. It has been made by a different manufacturer to suit or act as an alternative replacement for your original branded Remote. Quality varies amongst Compatible & Aftermarket Remotes & this dictates the price you pay but a general rule is they will always be priced more competitively than the Original Genuine Branded remote control.

One of the best examples of this is the Tilt-A-Matic (Shown below on our website) which has now been replaced with Remote Warehouse's Tilt-A-Matic Compatible Aftermarket Remote.

Code Copying Remotes

Another option we may suggest is a code copying remote. Often known as a Face To Face Remote or a Universal Remote these remote’s come in varying degrees of quality & reliability. Our preferred brand is the Italfile range Here which offer a 2 button (IRIS) or 4 button (PRIME) or (JANE) options. Italian designed & made & at the forefront of the latest access control technology developments, this is our recommendation for longevity & reliability. Italfile remotes are able to replace many old obsolete &/or hard to find models & also many of the newer model remotes. They offer customers the ability to have their old garage door opener remote combined with their new Gate opener or vice versa. The only barrier being you will still need a working remote from each access point (garage door, gate etc) that you wish to open so you can copy the code from those onto the Italfile remote.

One of the best examples where we offer an Italfile code copying remote as a replacement for an old & obsolete remote control is the Dominator ADS (Shown below on our website).

Add On Receiver Kits

In some instances there will be cases where none of the above replacement remote options discussed are suitable or made for your particular rare, old or obsolete remote. In these circumstances there are 2 more options available to you - Purchase a brand new Garage Door Opener Motor (costing upwards of $1000 installed) Or Install an Add on Receiver Kit ($189 & install yourself with full instructions & tech help provided).

An Add on Receiver Kit is a cost effective solution when your Garage Door Opener is still working manually but the receiver inside that receives the remote control's signal is no longer working or you have a very old but still working Garage Door Opener but no remote controls for it & there are no longer remotes available to purchase for it.

A good example where there are no longer any replacement remote options available so an Add On Receiver Kit Upgrade is recommended by us is the Easylifter 27.145MHz remote (Shown below on our website) which if purchased would be replaced with Remote Warehouse's Receiver Kit.

We also provide a range of dedicated Add On Receiver Kit Upgrade solutions for a range of specific common discontinued remote controls Here.

AHI & Tiltamatic branded Garage Door Openers were originally manufactured from the late 1980's to the mid 1990's & made to a very high standard which is why they have lasted so long. The accompanying Tiltamatic & AHI TRV-300 Tilt-A-Matic branded Garage Door Remotes for these openers (shown above) were rather large handheld devices which included a removeable sun visor attachment (which you may or may not still have attached) & used the at the time revolutionary dipswitch system to programme the remote to the Garage Door Opener.

Garage Door Remote technology has long since moved on from the 1980's dipswitch system & most remotes that used this have long since ceased production. Which may leave you wondering well what do I do now, my garage door opener still works but if I can't get a remote its useless. Luckily there are still a couple of great compatible options available to replace your old remote. To help you decide which one will be best suited for your needs we've compiled a brief guide on each.

Modern Compatible Dipswitch Remotes

Remote Warehouse's compatible version of the original AHI Tiltamatic Remote is a much smaller, compact, single button remote that fits on your key ring (shown below). It has been specifically manufactured to replace many obsolete genuine branded Dipswitch remotes that are no longer manufactured by the original company & is a great cost effective option to replace the large bulky original remotes.

Easily programmed with or without an original remote. So no need to worry if you have lost your old remote!

Programming involves opening up the back of the new remote (shown below) & opening up either the back of your original remote or your Garage Door Opener's motor where you will find a set of 8 small dipswitches. They will be arranged in a unique pattern (with each dipswitch in an up or down position). This pattern needs to be arranged exactly the same in each new remote to match the pattern inside your Garage Door Opener's motor & the pattern inside any original remote/s you still have. It is as simple as that & once done your new remote is programmed & will immediately work to open & close your Garage Door Opener (full detailed instructions are included with purchase).

Click Here for further information about this Compatible Remote

Latest Technology Code Copying Remotes

Exclusive to Remote Warehouse is the Italian manufactured & designed JANE remote from Italfile which is equipped with the latest code copying technology. This is a premium quality remote with the long lasting superior reliability you would come to expect from Italian made.

The JANE remote requires an existing working AHI or Tiltamatic remote to copy the code from.

Provided you have a working remote that is currently operating your AHI or Tiltamatic Garage Door Opener, this JANE remote will work. The beauty of the JANE code copying remote is you won't have to open up any remotes or open up your Garage Door Opener's motor to change dipswitches over. Instead a simple easy to follow procedure (instructions are included with purchase) by placing the old original remote in a specific position with the new JANE remote to capture the code/signal & save it onto the new JANE remote. Once done both your new JANE remote & any old original working remotes you have will continue to work alongside each other to open & close your Garage Door.

It can be a real pain when your garage door remote stops working suddenly or has been slowly & steadily fading in performance & range. Below we take you through some possible causes & provide some solutions for what can seem like a real mystery at times.

Remote Battery

The very first thing is to check if the battery needs to be replaced. Make sure you use long lasting, high quality garage door remote batteries. Visit our batteries collection here to purchase a new battery for your remote & get advice on how to change the battery on your Garage Door Remote Here.

Remote Signal

Check there is nothing obstructing your garage door opener's aerial which usually looks like a small wire hanging down from your garage door opener's motor. Sometimes adjusting the direction or position of the aerial can help improve your handheld remote/s performance & range./span>

You can also find reprogramming instructions in your original Garage Door Motor booklet or sometimes printed on the Garage Door Motor itself.

Wall Button Switch

If you have a hard wired Wall Button Switch you will need to check it still opens & closes your Garage Door. This will isolate if it is just a problem with your Garage Remote or if the problem is with your Garage Door Motor.

Other Garage Door Remotes

If you have other Garage Remotes operating the same Garage Door you will need to check if it is just the one Remote or all of the Remotes that have stopped working.

We know this can be a tricky one so here is our guide to finding the right garage remote to suit your Garage Door Opener or Gate. We have New Zealand's largest range of Garage & Gate Remotes with over 200 different makes & models available so we will have something to suit but if the guide below isn't any assistance contact us Here for further help & advice.

Brand:

The easiest way to search & find your replacement Remote is if you know the brand of your current Remote or Garage Door Opener. Some Remotes will have their brand emblazoned on the front which keeps your search easy but if not have a look on the back of it as it will sometimes be printed there too. Otherwise have a look at your Garage Door Opener – usually the back or one of the side panels of your Garage Door Opener will have the Brand & possibly a model number printed on it. To help we've added an example of how to Search By Brand on our website:

A) Here is our example Remote we are going to search for on the website. We have identified the Brand is ATA (Automatic Technology Australia) found on the front & back of the Remote shown below:

B) We go to The Remote Warehouse home page & along the main menu at the top of the page we find 'Shop By Brand' & scroll through the list of brands to find 'ATA Automatic Technology' section & click on it to go to the ATA Collection of remotes. The below examples show the method to find & search by brand on our website on your computer.

C) Now we can look through the ATA remotes & search for a remote that looks similar to our existing one. We find the ATA remote we think is a match & click on it:

D) Which takes us to its product listing below:

E) We see there are further photos in the product listing & click on one of them to enlarge it so we can compare our remote in hand to the one in the product listing & it matches exactly. So this is the correct remote we need to purchase.

F) You can also find at the bottom of the product listing an area called 'Compatible with' which shows other compatible options for this remote which include accessories such as sun visor clips, replacement cases & also compatible remote option/s (if there are any). For the Genuine ATA PTX-4 remote, we see in the example below, there is a cheaper alternative Compatible Aftermarket remote (Aftermarket meaning it is not made by ATA but will operate & work alongside your existing ATA PTX-4 remotes to open & close your garage door). You can click on this & to be taken to the Compatible Aftermarket remote to find out more.

H) After clicking on the compatible PTX-4 remote we double check & find in the description & in the compatibility photo that this Aftermarket remote is compatible with our Genuine PTX-4 Blue Remote.

I) So we now have two options we can select from to replace our existing Remote - a Genuine ATA PTX-4 Blue Remote or an Aftermarket Compatible PTX-4 Remote.

2. Model:

Our website also enables you to search by Model number. Some Remotes will have their model number (usually on the back, but it can also occasionally be on the front of the Remote). If you can't find anything that looks like a model number on your Remote, have a look on the back & side panels of your Garage Door Motor. Once you have a remote control or garage door or Gate opener Model number you can enter that into our Search Bar at the top of the page & hit 'Enter' on your keyboard & our website will display all Remotes matching your Model number. To help we've added an example of how to Search By Model on our website:

Garage Motor Model search -

A) Here is our example Garage Door Motor we are going to search for on the website. We have identified the brand is Dominator & the Model number is GDO-11V1 found on the back panel of the motor:

B) We head to the Remote Warehouse website & enter in the Brand + Model number to the Search Bar at the top of the page & hit 'Enter' to search for that model.

C) Here are our results for all Garage Door Remotes that mention that particular combination of brand + Model. We find the remote we think is a match & click on it:

D) Which takes us to its product listing below. We read through the compatible Garage Door Motor models & see our model - GDO-11V1 is listed there:

E) If we click back to our GDO-11V1 search we find next to the Genuine Dominator PTX-5V1 remote we have just looked at, an Aftermarket compatible remote option.

F) We click on it to go to its product listing for more information. We also find our Garage Door Motor model listed here as being compatible with this Aftermarket Remote:

H) So we now have two options we can choose from to replace our existing Remote - a Genuine Dominator PTX-5V1 Remote or an Aftermarket Compatible PTX-5V1 Remote.

Remote Model search -

A) If we know what model our Garage Door or Gate Remote is we can enter that into the Search bar at the top of the page. In the example below my B&D branded Remote's model number is TB-7V1:

B) So I enter that Model number into the search bar:

C) Here are our results for all Garage Door Remotes that mention that particular model number 'TB-7V1'. We find the remote we think is a match & click on it:

D) Which takes us to its product listing below. We can see it is for a Genuine B&D TB-7V1 remote & we also see it comes in either Black or Red colours that you select when purchasing.

E) Just to be totally sure we have the correct remote, we enlarge the photo that shows the front + back view of the red remote & compare it with our existing remote to see it matches exactly. So we can now confirm that this is the correct remote to purchase.

If you've noticed your garage door remote is a little less reliable than it once was, or it has stopped working altogether, it's likely time to replace the battery. If you're not sure how to change your garage door remote battery, we’re here to help. The question of how to change a garage door remote battery is a surprisingly common one, and the good news is that it's a simple task that most people can do themselves.

At Remote Warehouse, we specialise in all things related to garage door remotes, from replacement remotes to garage door remote control batteries. We're here to support our customers, whether that means selling them one of our products or simply offering reliable advice. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of replacing a battery so that you know what to do next time your battery runs out.

Understanding Your Garage Door Remote Battery

Your garage door remote relies on a battery to transmit signals to your garage door opener. Different brands and models of remotes may use different types of batteries, but they all have a finite lifespan. When your remote stops responding or the signal weakens, it's often a sign that the battery needs replacing.

It's important to note that not all garage door remotes take the same size battery. To identify what size you will need, check your remote's manual or look at the battery itself, which will show you the type needed. The most common battery types are CR2032 and CR2025 - you can find these in our online store here and in some supermarkets and high-street stores.

How to Replace Garage Door Remote Battery Yourself

Replacing your garage door remote battery is a straightforward process. Here's everything you need to know to get started:

1. Gather Your Tools

You'll need a small screwdriver, typically a Phillips or flathead, to open the remote's casing.

2. Open the Remote

Look on your remote for any screw/s (sometimes the screw/s are embedded deeper than surface level so what might appear as just a hole on your remote will have actually have a screw in it to open your remote) If you can’t find any screw/s, your remote will have have an indented area somewhere along its edges where you can gently unclip it using a flathead screwdriver or similar to open it.

Top Tip: Remember to store any screws removed in the opening process in a safe place so they don’t get lost & you can put your remote back together once the battery is changed.

Are Garage Door Remotes Universal?

If you’ve lost your original garage door remote, replacing it will be a top priority. But how do you know where to start? When your TV remote goes missing or stops working, replacing it with a universal remote is usually a quick fix - so can you do the same for your garage door remote?

The short answer is no. Generally, garage door remotes are not universal, although some are compatible with more than one system.

Here at Remote Warehouse, we know that you want to get back up and running as quickly as possible, and we understand that a one-size-fits-all remote control garage door opener would be the ideal answer. However, most garage doors are designed to work specifically with their own technology, so finding the right remote is crucial.

We’re here to offer expert advice, so you don’t have to take the risk of using a universal remote that might not work as expected with your garage door system.

Understanding garage door remote compatibility

When it comes to garage door remotes, compatibility is the most important factor. If there’s enough overlap in the technology, a manufacturer may offer a garage door opener that works across multiple models, but you need to read the fine print to make sure your model is one of them.

While universal garage door remotes do exist, the majority are only compatible with certain makes and models of doors, so they aren’t quite as “universal” as they first appear. The exception is this IRIS 2 button remote & this PRIME 4 button remote from Italian company Italfile who specialise in universal garage door remotes with expansive compatibility. Remote Warehouse is the exclusive distributor of the Italian made & manufactured Italfile range.

The importance of compatibility and programming

Selecting a garage door opener remote that is compatible with your specific garage door may seem like searching for a needle in a haystack, but it’s key to ensuring smooth and reliable operation (and isn’t half as difficult as you might think).

At Remote Warehouse, we take pride in being a reliable source of a wide range of compatible garage door remotes in NZ. Whether you need a Merlin compatible garage door remote or any other brand, we have you covered. Our knowledgeable team can assist you in finding the perfect match for your system, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

Once received, follow the manufacturer’s easy-to-use instructions for programming the new remote, as this will ensure seamless synchronisation with your garage door. Should you encounter any difficulties, you can seek assistance via phone, email or live chat for technical support at no additional cost, as it is included in the purchase price.

Expert advice when you need it most

Realising your garage door opener is damaged, misplaced or lost is frustrating enough as it is. That’s why we recommend speaking to a member of our team in the first instance. You’ll receive expert guidance from remote control specialists, making the whole process as smooth as possible.

We offer a wide range of garage door remotes in NZ, from Merlin garage door remotes to Dominator and other respected brands. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us for expert guidance and explore our comprehensive range of (brand-specific) universal garage door remotes and remote control garage door openers today.
Garage Door opening randomly? Its an uneasy feeling when your Garage Door starts randomly opening at strange times of the day & night. The last thing you want is to arrive home to find your Garage Door has randomly opened while you were out. We expose the likely culprits behind this strange phenomenon & show you how to solve it.

1. Garage Door Remote:

The number one culprit for your Garage Door opening randomly is your Garage Door Remote. It also happens to be the easiest & cheapest fix out of the three possibilities.

A) Have a quick look over all your Garage Door Remotes. Are the buttons clean & free from debris? Are any of the buttons are stuck in the 'pushed' in position? Having the buttons stuck in the pushed in position can lead to a confused signal with the Remote trying to open & close the Garage Door all the time. Give all your remotes a good wipe over to make sure there's nothing stuck in or around the buttons too that can cause this. If your Remote is old & the buttons keep getting stuck in this position it might be worth replacing the Remote. Take a look at Remote Warehouse's range of all Remotes Here, or check out our handy guide What Garage Remote Do I need to help you select the correct Replacement Remote to work with your Garage Door or Gate.

B) When was the last time you replaced the battery in your Remote/s? Try changing the battery in each Remote to see if this makes a difference. You can purchase Batteries Here for your Garage Door Remotes.

2. Garage Door:

The number two reason for your Garage Door opening randomly is your Garage Door itself or to be more exact the Safety Sensors on it. All Garage Doors manufactured after 1993 incorporated Safety Sensors which enabled it to 'sense' if the descending door hit an object. If the door hit an object the sensors would relay this to the motor & the door would ascend back up to prevent the object or effectively the person or animal from being crushed by the door.

A) With this in mind have a thorough check around your Garage Door & the door tracks to make sure there is nothing in the way blocking it from closing. Some doors are more sensitive than others, so anything no matter how small you think is potentially in the way of the closing door should be moved.

B) Also check the condition of the Garage Door tracks as if they are bumped or bent, this can misalign or damage the Safety Sensors & cause the Door to randomly open also.

3. Garage Door Motor:

The number three reason your Garage Door is opening randomly is your Garage Door Motor. Unfortunately this also happens to be the most expensive & technical problem requiring an expert to fix it.

A) Electrical surges, stormy weather can disrupt and damage the circuit/logic board or short circuit wiring in your Garage Door Motor effectively causing it to send the wrong signals to your Garage Door. In this case we suggest hiring a Garage Door Specialist or Electrician to identify & fix or replace the damaged parts. In the event replacement parts are not available for purchase (usually due to the age of the Garage Door Motor), replacing the entire unit may be a cheaper solution - take a look at our range of Garage door motors Here

Lost Your Garage Door Remote? Here's What to Do Next

Just when you thought your week couldn’t get any worse, you’ve found yourself searching, “I lost my garage door opener remote!” Nothing throws a spanner in the works quite like realising you’ve misplaced your garage remote. Whether it has fallen off your keychain, the kids have found a new hiding place for it, the dog’s eaten it, or you’ve been a victim of theft, here’s what you need to do next.

Don’t panic, plan

It’s easy to go straight into panic mode when you realise your garage door remote has gone missing but keep in mind that, worst-case scenario, you can always order a replacement.

If you’ve left a spare with a friend, neighbour or family member, give them a call so you can get access in the meantime. Then, retrace your steps and check all the places you may have left it. Usually, after a bit of searching, it’ll appear where you least expect it.

If you’re still empty-handed, it’s time to move on to the next step.

Secure your garage, safeguard your home

A remote control garage door opener can easily end up in the hands of the wrong person. If your garage door remote was stolen along with your handbag, it doesn’t take much research for someone to link the name on your bank cards to your home address.

With that in mind, it’s crucial to secure your garage as soon as you realise your remote is missing, and if your garage is attached to your home with internal access, even more so.

The best way to do this is to delete all remotes from your garage door opener’s memory, which will ensure all current and previously stored remotes will no longer be able to access your system. You can then reprogramme any remaining remotes you have on hand within the family and/or trusted friends, leaving the stolen remote unable to access your garage door.

Future proofing ideas

If this experience has left you uneasy there are a couple of other options you may want to consider.

Look at installing a wireless weatherproof keypad where, rather than having a remote, you have a pincode entry. We stock a range of systems here.

Many modern security systems also have the option of an app-based access system, allowing you to control your home from your phone. This is a great option for busy households, especially those with forgetful teens coming and going!

Or, keep it simple with a spare remote secured in a lockbox somewhere out-of sight. You’ll find a great range here.

Get a garage door remote replacement

Once your property is secured, you can focus on making life easier moving forward. As long as you know the brand and model of your garage door, finding a replacement remote is relatively straightforward.

At Remote Warehouse, we offer free shipping on all purchases and carry a huge range of stock, including Dominator, Tiltamatic and Merlin garage door remotes.
