Between reading this post, sending out a follow-up and my last comment here (an hour at the most), I'm delighted to report that I got a response! This newspaper is on my dream markets list and they wrote back to commission my article! Yay!

The ed said that the original mail was in his spam folder - it does pay to ask him to check!

Thanks again for this post - I'd have never gotten around to sending the follow-up without it.

Interesting about the morning pages!!

I've at times done them too, & at times I did plain old journalling, or some sort of getting-organized/to do lists etc (or a combination of those)..
I guess it depends how you do them & what you write..

If you keep dwelling in the angst it may be negative, if you do 'worst case scenarios' (possibly into absurdity, until you can laugh about them, or find new & better solutions!!) it may all be helpful..
I have some really funny short stories inspired by my own terror!

The idea of Artist's Dates is new to me, thanks! :)

& WOW, writing for Oxygen!! :) I bow in admiration!!

Yup, still relevant! Love the part about work-life balance. Now I'm fighting the idea that a pedicure will help me meet tomorrow's deadline...

This is an excellent post. Thank you for sharing your experience. I like when you mention being non-confrontational, as I am too. This makes it hard to follow-up on a query, and like Dwayne above said, "I don't like to bother people." I'm wondering what other writers think about how much we should "bother" editors? I also liked you mentioning that it's good to form writer-friends and not competitors!

Thank you. The marketing is the worst part for me. I just don't like to "bother" people.

As someone who's been looking into starting a freelance career on the side of a full-time job, I've been reading a lot about these "writer mills". Although I understand all the drawbacks of working for a content aggregator, I thought, "Gotta start somewhere, right?" Now, I'm not so sure!

By the way, what do people think of the website True Slant? http://trueslant.com/

Is this also a writer mill? Or a legit site?

Well, I’ll come out of the closet to show the mud on my face. I freely admit to writing an archeology column for Examiner.com. I fell into it out of self defense as my regular blog was getting too many suggestions that weren't on topic. Right now, I'm enjoying it as I build up my own personal readership outside of regular Examiner marketing venues.

Am I still apprehensive when I see all these articles about aggregators? Sure. I want my writing to be taken seriously just as the next guy. Do I expect to make a fortune? Yeah, right...next question.

Will I continue writing for them? It depends.

I'm marketing the articles (all evergreen type vs. the typical Examiner stuff) to a couple of segments that would find them helpful. However, I also have a drop dead date. If the markets don't pan out, then I'll consider taking my work elsewhere.
