Be ready for Christ’s coming
Luke 21:34-36
Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.’

Not too long ago, our congregation closed a funeral service with a joyous rendition of this popular hymn:
“Soon and very soon, we are goin’ to see the King! No more cryin’ there, no more             dyin’ there.  Hallelujah, hallelujah, we’re goin’ to see the king.”

Afterward, as folks stood around talking, many enthused about how wonderful it was to sing together this lively and celebrative song. And how the deceased person would have taken such happiness in it.

The hymn is a hopeful affirmation of Christ’s coming and what that will mean for us and for the world. Christ’s coming is a time that we long for, a time when God’s government will come to full power.

Today’s reading sounds a different note. Taken at face value, it sounds ominous, an occasion to pray for strength to escape. There will be distress among the nations and cosmic disturbances. These sorts of passages were troubling to me as a young person as I heard them read in church. I hoped that these ominous times would not come to pass.

When you think about it, life in this world is always presenting times of tribulation for someone, and thanks to the 24/7 media reporting we are more immediately and fully aware of wars, rumors of wars, suffering and woes.

Luke had certain troubling events in mind: political struggles leading to the destruction of the temple, the siege of Jerusalem, and times of persecution. These frightening events were interpreted as signs of God’s redemptive action. Luke’s words can be words of assurance that despite the lack of evidence for God’s reign. God is not yet finished! God’s government will triumph!

Sometimes God seems hidden from us and our lives. We can be comforted and consoled that God’s presence does not depend on our sensing it and on our understanding of what God is up to in the world. That is always good news! So even while we puzzle about what God is doing or not doing in our lives and world, we can be confident enough to sing, “We are goin to see the King!”

Gracious God,
Lift our hearts, unburden them, stir up your spirit in our lives and world. Give us confidence that your work is not finished and that our cryin’ and dyin’ will cease.

God Rules
Revelation 1:8     I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

Sometimes I think Revelation is the most misunderstood book in the Bible. Many people insist on reading it as a mysterious prediction of the violent end of the world. More learned scholars say it is a very political attack on the Roman Empire that encourages Christians to obey God not the emperor. A political prisoner calls on seven persecuted churches to oppose the Caesar, using only nonviolent prayer and martyrdom.

Our passage is taken from the introduction where the title “who is and who was and who is to come” is used twice in eight verses. People in those days would recognize it right away as a title used for the wicked Nero. You can see what the prophet John means if you read it out loud, as he instructs, and emphasize the first word.  In other words, “I, the Lord God, not Nero the emperor, is he who is and who was and who is to come.” God rules, not the Roman emperor. Paul makes the same claim when he says the first Christian confession was simply, “Jesus is Lord”, a direct rebuke to the Roman pledge of allegiance, “Caesar is Lord”.

We can get the full impact when we remember I John proclaiming “God is love”. If the Caesar rules by the power of the sword; God rules by the power of love. Love is the first and the last word.

That contrast still works. Things got so embattled during the recent presidential campaign, people on both sides lamented they would move to a foreign country if the opposition got elected. That is placing far too much faith in any human leader, even an elected one in a democratic system. We want to keep things in proper perspective. Love, not violence, makes the world go round. God the Lover, no political leader using military power, rules the world. Don’t be afraid to love.

Let us pray:  We give thanks that you alone rule this world, Father, and that you rule in love and forgiveness. Pour your love into our hearts that we might follow you without fear and be part of this earth’s redemption. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Are We There Yet?

Scripture Reading: Mark 13:9-13
“It’s going to be brother killing brother, father killing child, children killing parents. There’s no telling who will hate you because of me.
“Stay with it-that’s what is required. Stay with it to the end. You won’t be sorry; you’ll be saved. (Mark 13:12-13 The Message Bible)
“Are we there, yet?”  My parents must have heard that dozens, no, hundreds of times when we traveled somewhere by car when us girls were little.  We had no patience and no good sense of time when we got in the car to go off for vacations or visits to relatives.  We were just three little whine machines in the back of the car, eager to reach our destination (forget about the journey).
The disciples might not have been whiners, per se, but they also often seemed more interested in the destination than the journey.  When will the kingdom of God arrive?  When will the meek inherit the earth?  When will God’s justice prevail?  When will the end times come?  Are we there yet?  Jesus doesn’t tell us when, any more than he told his disciples.  What he did do, was prepare them (and us) for the journey.  Times will be tough – but that’s not the end; you’ll get persecuted for Jesus’ sake – but that’s not the end; there will be strife and killing, even among those in the family – but that’s not the end; lots of people may hate you because of your faith and belief – but that’s not the end.  Jesus wasn’t an ‘end times’ kind of guy.  What he wanted his disciples (and us) to focus on, is staying the course – love one another, even when it hurts and others ridicule you; care for one another, even when disaster strikes, and all you want to do is look out for number one; practice justice and peace, even when the world thinks you’re a fool.  Hang in there, because being a follower of Jesus is as much about the journey as the destination.  And that’s because the kingdom of God isn’t in some far off place – the kingdom of God is, at least in part, here and now, within and around each of us.

Prayer:    Lord, teach me to appreciate the journey that is my faith.  Help me not look so far into the future that I miss opportunities to be your disciple in the present.  Amen.

Revelation Dates and Symbols

I thought you might be interested in my recent discoveries in understanding the Book of Revelation. Since I was a kid I have been fascinated with the images of the book and the whole idea of the end times and what they would be like. Through my research I found something I did not expect, Revelation is actually written as much as a study of church history as it is about the end times. As with the entire Bible, each book was written for the benefit of the original recipients, and for each age of the church thereafter. For instance, Isaiah was not just fore telling about Christ when he told about the virgin birth, he was also “forth” telling about an event that would occur soon (within Isaiah’s original reader’s lifetime).¹ What is so wonderful about this is that God is giving his believers a small taste (a foretaste of the things to come) of his greater kingdom to his people now, with an additional promise for a more complete fulfillment of all his promises later. I see this pattern repeated often in the Bible. It’s God giving us a little bit of his kingdom one bite at a time and also asking us to trust Him for the complete fulfillment in a later time. [In a side note, I believe God would give us more now, if we were only willing to accept more of his magnificent grace- but we are a bit slow to understand due to our sinful nature].

Revelation Dates

So I started my research into the book by studying the circumstances in which it was written. The churches in Asia Minor (the seven churches referred to in the book) were under intense persecution, which was about to get even worse. The persecution was coming from two sources: the Jews who had rejected that Jesus was the messiah, and the Romans. In many cases the Romans were actually incited by the Jews to do something about the “heretics” namely the newly converted to Christ, who were “causing an uproar”. Of course the biggest “uproar” was that the Jewish worship system was being rejected and the Jewish leaders were losing their power over the people. Jesus was liberating his true believers from no longer having to worship to the “types” and “references” to Christ, but who could instead worship Jesus directly without a sacrificial system and without human priests. Jesus said this was going to happen when he said he came not to bring peace but to bring fire to earth.²

Most if not all students of Revelation believe that the period of persecution referred to occurred during the time frame from Cesar Nero (AD 67) to Cesar Domitian (AD 95). How one interprets Revelation is greatly influenced by the date you pick (either the early date of 67 or the late date of 95). I was really intrigued by this debate and read a book that gives the evidence from both sides. I was really glad I did this study (although I must say the book is written in scholarly language which made reading laborious at times). I can see how modern scholars could be persuaded with the later date as it involves a second century (AD 190) account by the early church Bishop Irenaeus. That evidence to me was vague whereas the following evidence seems much more direct and has the added advantage of being in the Bible itself (what the scholars refer to as “internal evidence”).

The first thing that seems odd about an AD 95 dating of Revelation is that it falls well outside the dates of the other New Testament books. If Peter and Paul were both martyred in Rome in the AD 60’s, it means their writings were complete by that time. Luke’s book of Acts ends before Paul’s death and therefore it’s reasonable to conclude it was written no later than the AD 60’s. As for dating the other NT books, why do none of them mention the end of Jerusalem which occurred in AD 70? By all accounts this event was monumental not just to Israel but to the world at that time. In writing about God’s prophesies how could any biblical author at that time omit the end to the political and temple religious life of Israel when Jerusalem fell?

The AD 95 dating of Revelation might lead one to assume that the events prophesied in the book were to take place in the future. This leads to the heresy (in my opinion) of the Left Behind books and the misguided predictions of the date of Christ’s return. What you believe does make a difference in your actions. Just look at the poor people who believed in Harold Camping and how crushed and disappointed they were when Christ did not come at the appointed time. This puts a stain on the whole Church in my opinion.

Now here is the evidence I found for the early dating (AD 64 – AD 68). The bible refers to the coming of a great tribulation which is “soon” to occur. Both Jesus and John make the case that these events are to occur within the generation that crucified Jesus (the Olivet discourse, Luke 21:24-32)³. The tribulation that occurred under Nero was severe and not only that, it was directed against the new believers in Christ but it was also directed against the apostolic ministry as well. Revelation 13:5 says the beast would continue for 42 months. The Neronic persecution was instituted in 64 AD and lasted until his death in June 68 AD, which is three and a half years, or 42 months. The tribulation that occurred in the Jerusalem War in AD 67-70 resulted in the destruction of the Temple for three and a half years of suffering and death to its inhabitants.

Revelation Symbols

The Book of Revelation can be dated within just a couple of years by understanding how the people and the churches of John’s time would understand the following passages:

Rev.17:9-10 “Here is the mind which has wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sits, and they are seven kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while.”

The seven mountains refer to a geographical location which, at the time of Revelation, would refer to Rome. The seven kings refer to the kings of Rome, which at that time were called Caesars. Here is the list of the seven Caesars or Emperors: Julius, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, and Galba. Nero is the sixth in line of the Caesars and he persecuted Christians after the fire of AD 64 as recorded by non Christian historian and Roman senator Tacitus (born AD 56). Nero had no surviving children and therefore no heir to the throne. So five kings had fallen, Nero was the sixth, and Galba had not yet come, his reign was very short, 221 days.

The other reference to this timeframe is to Nero as the Beast (Rev. 11, 13, 17). Here is a quote from Wikipedia:

The Beast

Nero was even called the Beast. Apollonius of Tyana specifically states that Nero was called a ‘beast’: “In my travels, which have been wider than ever man yet accomplished, I have seen man, many wild beasts of Arabia and India; but this beast, that is commonly called a Tyrant, I know not how many heads it has, nor if it be crooked of claw, and armed with horrible fangs. … And of wild beasts you cannot say that they were ever known to eat their own mother, but Nero has gorged himself on this diet“.^[26]

Nero was known for his cruel and despicable acts and was eventually called an enemy of the state by the Roman senate. He committed suicide shortly after that decision in AD 68. Since Galba had not yet come this puts the date of Revelation at AD 68 or earlier.

The Mark of the Beast

Finally, the readers of Revelation were told to “calculate the number of the Beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six” (Rev. 13:18). John did not expect that his readers “who had understanding” to have any difficulty identifying the beast, since they could simply calculate the meaning of this number. “Neron Kaisar” (the Greek rendering, documented by archaeological finds), when transliterated into Hebrew נרון קסר (Nrwn Qsr) had a number of 666. The variant number 616 found in some manuscripts of the Greek text of Revelation may represent the alternative Hebrew spelling נרו קסר (Nrw Qsr) based on the Latin form “Nero Caesar”. The variant probably existed to keep consistent the meaning of Nero as the Beast.[29]

The Greek spelling, “Nerōn Kaisar”, transliterates into Hebrew as נרון קסר or “nrvn qsr”. Adding the corresponding values yields 666, as shown:

By contrast, the Latin title for Nero is spelled simply “Nerō Caesar”, which transliterates to “נרו קסר” or “nrv qsr” and has a value of 616, which may explain that variation in some manuscripts.[30]

Summary

To summarize, I believe there is just as much evidence if not more, that the book of Revelation was written around AD 64-67 and that is big key to understanding a great deal of the symbolism in the book. However I do not believe that God predestined any of this to happen. He only wanted to convey to the Churches in the first Century what was about to happen and to warn them. He was warning both the churches in Asia Minor and the Jews in Jerusalem that a persecution was about to happen and if they stood strong in their faith they could be assured of their eternal rest with Him. By predicting these events ahead of time his followers could be assured that God could deal with history which is not the same as predestination.

There are different schools of thought on Revelation and all share some good points about both the end times and our own personal journeys of faith throughout Church history. I believe we just have to be discerning and weed out the good from the bad. Some people believe that all the events in Revelation occurred in the past and I think that is heresy as well. We are still waiting on the ultimate culmination of God’s plan of redemption with His faithful believers.

One thing I would recommend if you are interested, is to research Irenaeus’s statement on the dating of Revelation and draw your own conclusions. One other thing to note about Irenaeus is that he is not in the mainstream on his views about Jesus’ ministry. He believed Jesus ministered when he was in his forties and was crucified around age 45. My challenge to people who insist on the late date for Revelation is “tell me about your evidence and let me decide”.

In the first two parts of the Historical and Prophetic view of Revelation, I explored the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, and Jesus’ words about the end times.  (Just a reminder, the “end times”refers to the end of the Jewish sacrificial system and worshiping at the Temple in Jerusalem).  In this part I want to talk about John’s prophecy to the early Christian church.  Although there is some debate about the date, I am convinced his prophecy was sent to the new Christian churches within one generation (40 years) of Jesus’ warning  ( which occurred around AD 30) .  This understanding of John’s prophecy directly ties to Jesus and the Old Testament prophecies, but in this case, John’s teaching went directly to those people about to be effected by the “end times”.

Exploring the Ancient World:

How can we possibly explore the Ancient world some thousands of years after the events that took place so long ago and outside anyone’s memory who lives today.  Well we do this by reading the recorded history, both written and buried (as in Archeology).

Let me give you a modern day example.  When I was young, I heard about a great maritime disaster called the sinking of the Titanic.  All I knew was the Titanic was a big ship that hit an iceberg and sank.  I didn’t know when it happened or who it happened to.  Also I didn’t see any evidence of this sinking.

I heard about this through the modern media and through my family.  My dad actually had a book (he got from his parents) called The Sinking of the Titanic and Other Great Sea Disasters (1912, click to read online).  However as a young boy this was all like a myth to me.  Where is the evidence of this I thought?  How could a ship sink by hitting ice?  Why did so many die? And finally, why do people even care about something that happened so long ago?

Dr. Robert Ballard is an oceanographer and explorer.  He too had heard about the Titanic and wanted to find it’s wreckage.  But how?  The ship was supposedly sunk in the deep ocean.  Would there be any remains left of the ship to find?  Through a measure of faith he found the ship broken but still very recognizable.  But how did he find it?  He found it through written records and Archeology.

On the night of the disaster the Titanic used the wireless (radio) to transmit its location to other ships.  And ships nearby recorded where the field of ice was nearby and the wind and currents.  Using some brilliant deduction, Dr. Ballard surmised that it would be easier to find the spilled contents of the ship (the debris field) than the ship itself.  So he started with the best known location and used sonar and video to search the sea floor for the sunken ship.  After a few days he found the ships boiler and by following the evidence (the debris field) he found the ship.

This method is what we need to use to find the truth that is revealed in the book of Revelation.  After all the meaning of Revelation (Apocalypse, click here for details) means “the unveiling” or “uncovering” in the ancient greek. So lets try and uncover the truth through the written record and through Archeology.

The Written Record of the End Times:

We have at least two written accounts of the end times.  The primary one is from John the apostle of Jesus in the Book of Revelation and the second one is Josephus’ account of the Jewish war with the Romans (which occurred between 66 and 73 A.D.).  From these two accounts we can piece together what was going to happen (and what did happen) in John’s day.

1) The first key to understanding what John wrote was that these events were “soon” to take place.  In the Bible the word translated as “soon” literally means in a short time, or it’s also translated “the time is at hand”.  These events were going to take place very soon.  Jesus said they would take place in a generation.  So forty years from Jesus’ day would be around AD 70.   These are the days John is referring to.

Another clue to the date is found in Revelation’s reference to the Beast.  Here is the explanation from Wikipedia the free encyclopedia:

Much evidence is given by preterists scholars as to why the Beast from the Sea could only have referred to Nero.

This interpretation is based upon the Angel’s explanation of the beast in Revelation 17:7, that the beast’s seven heads are seven kings (Rev. 17:10) and that Nero, is the sixth king “who is”, who was possibly alive and the emperor reigning at the time John was writing the book.^[24] The five kings who have fallen are seen as Julius, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula and Claudius, and Galba is the one who “has not yet come, but when he does come, he must remain for a little while”. (Rev. 17:10). Moreover, Rome was known in antiquity as the city of seven hills (Rev. 17:9) and Revelation was a warning about events that were “shortly” to take place (Rev. 1:1).

In Rev. 13:5-8, the Beast was given a mouth speaking in blasphemies against God and His Name. Inscriptions have been found in Ephesus in which Nero is called “Almighty God” and “Savior”.^[25] In verse 4, the Beast is worshiped by the world alongside the Dragon that gave it authority. Nero and Caligula “abandoned all reserve” in promoting emperor worship – they were the only two who demanded divine honors while still alive. Nero claimed to be the sun-god Apollo.

Revelation 13:7 speaks of the power given to the beast to make war with the saints. Nero was the first of the imperial authorities to persecute Christianity. Tacitus records the scene in Rome when the persecution of Christians (or Chrestians^[26]) broke out: “And their death was aggravated with mockeries, insomuch that, wrapped in the hides of wild beasts, they were torn to pieces by dogs, or fastened to crosses to be set on fire, that when the darkness fell they might be burned to illuminate the night”.^[27]

Revelation 13:5 says the beast would continue for 42 months. The Neronic persecution was instituted in 64 AD and lasted until his death in June 68 AD, which is three and a half years, or 42 months. Nero was even called the Beast. Apollonius of Tyana specifically states that Nero was called a ‘beast’: “In my travels, which have been wider than ever man yet accomplished, I have seen man, many wild beasts of Arabia and India; but this beast, that is commonly called a Tyrant, I know not how many heads it has, nor if it be crooked of claw, and armed with horrible fangs. … And of wild beasts you cannot say that they were ever known to eat their own mother, but Nero has gorged himself on this diet“.^[27]

Philippians 2:7, Paul wrote that Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.”

2) The other written record of the events we have is from Josephus a Jewish general and historian who first-hand witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70.  Here are some key statements from Josephus compared with Revelation. (From WordPress site written by pjmiller here).

John’s Revelation – “Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath.” (16:19)

Josephus– “it so happened that the sedition at Jerusalem was revived, and parted into three factions, and that one faction fought against the other; which partition in such evil cases may be said to be a good thing, and the effect of divine justice.” (5:1:1)

John’s Revelation – “And there were noises and thundering and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth.” (16:18)

Josephus - “for there broke out a prodigious storm in the night, with the utmost violence, and very strong winds, with the largest showers of rain, with continued lightnings, terrible thunderings, and amazing concussions and bellowings of the earth, that was in an earthquake. These things were a manifest indication that some destruction was coming upon men, when the system of the world was put into this disorder; and any one would guess that these wonders foreshowed some grand calamities that were coming” (“Wars of the Jews” 4:4:5)

John’s Revelation – “And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent.” (16:21)

Josephus -  “Now the stones that were cast were of the weight of a talent, and were carried two furlongs and further. The blow they gave was no way to be sustained, not only by those that stood first in the way, but by those that were beyond them for a great space. As for the Jews, they at first watched the coming of the stone, for it was of a white color, and could therefore not only be perceived by the great noise it made, but could be seen also before it came by its brightness;” (5:6:3)

This last passage refers to the mighty catapults  the Roman army used to hurl great stones at the city walls of Jerusalem when it was under siege.  Click on image below to see a description of how the Roman catapults were built and used.

Archeology – The End of the Temple and the Sacrifices

To this day there are no longer any sacrifices the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.  It was utterly destroyed as Jesus predicted.  The stones that Herod’s builders used to make the temple were thrown down.  With the destruction of the Old Temple, a New Jerusalem was made – namely the new believers in Christ.  They would worship Him all over creation in living temples.

How Jesus Knew about the End Times:

One thing that has always puzzled me about Jesus.

Philippians 2:7, Paul wrote that Jesus “emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.”

And this passage:  Matthew 24:36, However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows.

So how did Jesus know approximately when and how the Temple in Jerusalem was to be destroyed and God’s judgement would come as he explains in the Olivet Discourse (Mark 13, Matthew 24 and Luke 21).

I believe he learned this from his time as a young man studying the Scriptures and in this case the Book of Daniel.  Remember what he said to his parents: Luke 2:49, “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”  Which is also translated “about my Father’s business”.

Jesus most likely studied Daniel and the other prophets and saw passages like this one:  Daniel 9:25-27, ‘Here is what you must understand: From the time the word goes out to rebuild Jerusalem until the coming of the Anointed Leader, there will be seven sevens. The rebuilding will take sixty-two sevens, including building streets and digging a moat. Those will be rough times. After the sixty-two sevens, the Anointed Leader will be killed—the end of him. The city and Sanctuary will be laid in ruins by the army of the newly arriving leader. The end will come in a rush, like a flood. War will rage right up to the end, desolation the order of the day.

²⁷ “‘Then for one seven, he will forge many and strong alliances, but halfway through the seven he will banish worship and prayers. At the place of worship, a desecrating obscenity will be set up and remain until finally the desecrator himself is decisively destroyed.’”

Just so you know, the “sevens” referred to mean 7 year periods.  Seven also symbolically stands for perfection as in God’s perfect timing.  I am not going to go into it, but here is a timeline of events leading to the coming of the Anointed Leader (Jesus) until the destruction of the Temple and the Judgement of nations opposed to God’s son.

JESUS’ SERMON ON THE END TIME DESTRUCTION OF JERUSALEM AND THE TEMPLE:

His words are found in the Olivet Discourse as summarized by Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

After his teachings in the previous chapter, all set in the Temple courts, Jesus finishes his teaching in the Temple for the day and leaves. On his way out of the Temple an unnamed disciple remarks how great the Temple (Herod’s Temple) is. The buildings might have reached up to 150 feet (45.72 m) in height and they were adorned with gold, silver and other precious items.^[1]

“‘Do you see all these great buildings?’ replied Jesus. ‘Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” (2) Jesus seems to say that the Temple will be destroyed, although not when or how. This is the last thing that Jesus does in the Temple.

Later Jesus travels back to the Mount of Olives. Mark says that Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Jesus privately, as he was sitting opposite the Temple on the mountain, “Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?”:

Jesus then predicts a disastrous event in Judea:

“When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong— let the reader understand— then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let no one on the roof of his house go down or enter the house to take anything out. Let no one in the field go back to get his cloak. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! Pray that this will not take place in winter, because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now— and never to be equaled again. If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect—if that were possible. So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time. (14-23 NIV)

Since Jesus is speaking to a first century audience about the year 30 AD it’s reasonable to assume that these events will take place in their lifetime.  But just to emphasize the point remember these two quotes from Jesus and from his disciple John.

Luke 21:31-32 (Jesus)

“Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.”
Revelation 1:3  (John) Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.

Revelation 22:10 (John) Then he told me, “Do not seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, because the time is near.

Compare this with Daniel’s revelation of the same events made a few 400+ years earlier.  Again you see how Scripture ties into Scripture.  Nothing God planned to do with Jerusalem was unforeseen by Jesus because the prophesy of Daniel foretold the same events to come to the generation (typically 40 years) after Jesus.

Daniel 8:26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”

The next and final part of this Historical and Prophetic series will show the Beast to be the destroyer of Jerusalem.  The Beast is Rome and it’s leader is Nero.  The Beast with the help of the False Prophet – Apostate Israel leads to the destruction which brings the abomination of desolation (the end of the Temple and its sacrificial system) to be replaced by the New Temple – Jesus.  Read Revelation Chapters 12 through 21.

BACKGROUND:

Some background. I grew up watching disaster movies. I felt great excitement at watching people in peril. I believe I needed to see them make some gut wrenching decisions, but also find some redemption through experiencing the hardship, surviving that, and becoming stronger and more enriched (in truth and love). My first experience learning about the “priesthood” was watching Gene Hackman in the Poseidon Adventure. He was a down to earth Reverend, who wasn’t sure he fully trusted God and when things went wrong, he really let God know about it!!

The Poseidon Adventure:

Then I became a disaster movie junky (and somewhat interested in these priests and especially their personal relationship with God).  Maybe you have seen some of these movies too: The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Dante’s Peak, Titanic, Twister, Deep Impact, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012.  I have seen them all and appreciated them as Christian movies because they deal with sacrifice, redemption and love.

REVELATION AS THE FINAL CHAPTER IN GOD’S BOOK (THE BIBLE)

Now on to Revelation.  Revelation is the final book of Bible and as such it has to wrap up and conclude God’s story of love to his people.  And as in any good book, Revelation makes allusions to all the previous books of the Bible from Genesis in the Old Testament to the Epistles of Paul and other writers in the New Testament.

Revelation is full of apocryphal language which means it is written in a certain style to convey the utmost meaning to its intended audience.  Here is where we 21st century Christians need to show a little restraint.  The Book of Revelation was written to the Seven Churches in Asia, the Church in Rome, and the Church in Jerusalem (Israel).  It has specific meaning to those people and a more general meaning to us.  The specific meaning to the early churches was “be ready, a storm is coming”.  “God through his Son is about to save his true people while judging the nations for their false teachings and idolatry.  All the nations of the known world at that time are about to be held accountable for not loving the Son and one of those nations is apostate (fallen) Israel and its city (the Great City) Jerusalem.

God’s judgement of the nations has taken place throughout history.  And God’s warning might be summed up in this writing from Psalms (attributed to King David).

Psalm 2 is the second Psalm of the Bible. It tells us that people can either defy God and perish, or submit to him and be blessed. Psalm 2 itself does not identify its author, but Acts 4:24-26 in the New Testament clearly attributes it to David.^[1]

Psalm 2

Why the big noise, nations? Why the mean plots, peoples?
   Earth-leaders push for position,
   Demagogues and delegates meet for summit talks,
   The God-deniers, the Messiah-defiers:
   ”Let’s get free of God!
   Cast loose from Messiah!”
   Heaven-throned God breaks out laughing.
   At first he’s amused at their presumption;
   Then he gets good and angry.
   Furiously, he shuts them up:
   ”Don’t you know there’s a King in Zion? A coronation banquet
   Is spread for him on the holy summit.”

 ^7-9 Let me tell you what God said next.
   He said, “You’re my son,
   And today is your birthday.
   What do you want? Name it:
   Nations as a present? continents as a prize?
   You can command them all to dance for you,
   Or throw them out with tomorrow’s trash.”

 ^10-12 So, rebel-kings, use your heads;
   Upstart-judges, learn your lesson:
   Worship God in adoring embrace,
   Celebrate in trembling awe. Kiss Messiah!
   Your very lives are in danger, you know;
   His anger is about to explode,
But if you make a run for God—you won’t regret it!

As you can see, God does not suffer those who reject Him or his Son.  But God is not harsh or arbitrary in his judgements.  The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion.  So he is giving the nations plenty of time to turn back to him while at the same time He protects and restores his People (the Global universal set of believers).

HISTORICAL GROUNDWORK FOR REVELATION

When the first temple in Jerusalem was destroyed the Israelites were scattered and Daniel and his friends were captured by the Babylonians.  God promised the exile would last 70 years and Daniel noticing the end of this time-frame, started to pray to God to show him the fulfillment of God’s promise to return His people back to the Holy Land. Daniel was also given insight into the Babylonian king’s dreams which predicted the rise of four nations before the promised Messiah would come to judge and rule the earth.

The four kingdoms refers to four monarchies, or world empires, described in dreams and visions in the Book of Daniel of the Hebrew Bible. The actual term “four kingdoms” occurs once, found in Daniel 8:22. These four kingdoms are described in different ways throughout Daniel, beginning with chapter 2 and paralleling with chapter 7, chapter 8 and chapter 11. Since Classical antiquity, expositors on Daniel have offered various identities for each of the “four kingdoms”, often with a historicist approach.

1. Neo-Babylonian Empire
2. Medo-Persian Empire
3. Macedonian Empire of Alexander and his successors to the Ptolomaic and Seleucid Empires together, and
4. Roman Empire

This was the scheme described by Jerome in his Commentary on Daniel.^[7]

Daniel’s first vision^[2] is that of four beasts and he asks for an interpretation of them. He is told that the four beasts represent Four monarchies to appear on Earth. Unlike Chapter 2, only the latter half of this vision, beginning with the fourth beast, is given a textual interpretation.

Beast like a lion

The first beast is like a lion with eagle’s wings, in which they are torn off. It is then standing on two feet and given a man’s heart.

Beast like a bear

The second beast is like a bear, raised up on one side, and has three ribs in its teeth. He is told to gorge himself on flesh.

Beast like a leopard

The third Beast is like a leopard with four wings and four heads is given authority to rule.

Fourth beast

The fourth beast is a terrifying, powerful beast, unlike any other, crushes and devours the whole earth with its iron teeth—trampling it down.

Vision

7 After that, in my vision at night I looked, and there before me was a fourth beast—terrifying and frightening and very powerful. It had large iron teeth; it crushed and devoured its victims and trampled underfoot whatever was left. It was different from all the former beasts, and it had ten horns.

Textual interpretation

23 The fourth beast is a fourth kingdom that will appear on earth. It will be different from all the other kingdoms and will devour the whole earth, trampling it down and crushing it. 24 The ten horns are ten kings who will come from this kingdom.

So what Daniel is saying is that the Fourth Beast is the Roman kingdom and if we read further it is the time of the coming of God’s Son Jesus to rule the earth in his love and merciful judgement.

THE TIME OF CHRIST’S RULE OCCURS FROM THE FIRST CENTURY TO TODAY

Little horn

8 While I was thinking about the horns, there before me was another horn, a little one, which came up among them; and three of the first horns were uprooted before it. This horn had eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth that spoke boastfully.

After them another king will arise, different from the earlier ones; he will subdue three kings. 25 He will speak against the Most High and oppress his saints and try to change the set times and the laws. The saints will be handed over to him for a time, times and half a time.

Divine judgment

9 As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. 10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him;ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

26 But the court will sit,

11 “Then I continued to watch because of the boastful words the horn was speaking. I kept looking until the beast was slain and its body destroyed and thrown into the blazing fire. 12 (The other beasts had been stripped of their authority, but were allowed to live for a period of time.)

and his power will be taken away and completely destroyed forever.

Final kingdom

• 13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.
• 13 (jewish alternative) “I was watching in night visions and behold! with the clouds of heaven, one like a man [= someone, that is the annointed King (Rashi)] came; he came up to the One of Ancient Days, and they brought him before Him.”^[3]
• 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
• 27 Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an everlasting kingdom, and all rulers will worship and obey him.
