Located in Decorah, Iowa, it streams live video day and night - an amazing view into the life of an eagle family.

Adult eagle with 2 of her 3 eaglets

If your lucky you'll catch one of the adults bringing prey to the hungry 8 week old raptors.

Watch the eagle cam HERE.

The Rez is also home a home to many eagles with a number of nesting locations having been identified over the years.

Last December we posted a few eagle photos that were taken in Forest Point just off Spillway Road. If you missed the photos you can catch them here.

Written by Francis Miles Finch, it was originally published in the September 1867 edition of The Atlantic Monthly.

THE BLUE AND THE GRAY.
Francis Miles Finch

By the flow of the inland river,

Whence the fleets of iron have fled,

Where the blades of the grave-grass quiver,

Asleep are the ranks of the dead;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Under the one, the Blue;

Under the other, the Gray.

These in the robings of glory,

Those in the gloom of defeat,

All with the battle-blood gory,

In the dusk of eternity meet;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Under the laurel, the Blue;

Under the willow, the Gray.

From the silence of sorrowful hours

The desolate mourners go,

Lovingly laden with flowers

Alike for the friend and the foe;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Under the roses, the Blue;

Under the lilies, the Gray.

So with an equal splendor

The morning sun-rays fall,

With a touch, impartially tender,

On the blossoms blooming for all;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Broidered with gold, the Blue;

Mellowed with gold, the Gray.

So, when the Summer calleth,

On forest and field of grain

With an equal murmur falleth

The cooling drip of the rain;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Wet with the rain, the Blue;

Wet with the rain, the Gray.

Sadly, but not with upbraiding,

The generous deed was done;

In the storm of the years that are fading,

No braver battle was won;

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Under the blossoms, the Blue,

Under the garlands, the Gray.

No more shall the war-cry sever,

Or the winding rivers be red;

They banish our anger forever

When they laurel the graves of our dead!

Under the sod and the dew,

Waiting the judgment day;

Love and tears for the Blue.

Tears and love for the Gray.

The right lane of I-20 eastbound, just past the Pearson Road Exit (Exit 48), has been closed for cleanup of an 18-wheeler accident that occurred earlier this morning.

Prior to the evening rush hour traffic, crews will open all lanes of I-20. MDOT crews have postponed the recovery of the 18-wheeler and will not shut down the interstate today.

There will be temporary closures on I-20 tomorrow, May 26 to allow crews to remove the 18-wheeler.

MDOT will keep motorists posted on road conditions as information becomes available. Motorists are encouraged to take an alternate route and expect delays when traveling in this area while crews work on the cleanup of this accident.

For the most up-to-date information in your area, please visit www.MSTraffic.com and sign up for your traffic alerts. Also, visit http://www.mstraffic.com/mobile to get the latest traffic information from MSTraffic.com on your mobile device.

MDOT advises the public to pull off the road to a safe location if you need to check the MSTraffic.com website while driving. MDOT’s number one concern is the safety of the traveling public.
The application can be downloaded for free from the Android Apps section of Google Play.

The Child ID App, first released in August 2011 for iPhones, provides parents with an easy way to electronically store pictures and vital information about their children in case they go missing—whether it’s a toddler wandering away at the mall or a teen who has been snatched by a stranger.

Using the app, you can show pictures of your kids and provide physical identifiers such as height and weight to security or police officers on the spot. You can also quickly and easily e-mail the information to authorities with a few clicks. The app also includes tips on keeping children safe as well as specific guidance on what to do in those first few crucial hours after a child goes missing.

To date, the iPhone version of the app has been downloaded more than 121,000 times.

Charged with Exploitation of a Child

Jackson, MS—A Rankin County resident has been arrested and charged with two counts exploitation of a child, announced Attorney General Jim Hood today.

Charles Crownover, age 32, of Brandon was arrested yesterday by investigators with the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Unit with assistance from the Madison Police Department and the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, all partners in the Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. Crownover is charged with two counts Exploitation of a Child.

“This case is a great example of the effectiveness of a task force like ours,” said Attorney General Hood. “We began with information originating in one area that instead led us to another. Through communication and cooperation, we made this arrest. I appreciate the assistance of Chief Waldrop and Sheriff Bailey and their officers in this case.”

Crownover was taken to the Rankin County jail. His initial appearance has not yet been set. If convicted, he faces up to 80 years behind bars. As with all cases, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The case will be prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General Brandon Ogburn of the Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Unit.

Highway Patrol

No Repeat of Last Memorial Day Weekend

Even though there has been a remarkable reduction in the number of fatalities in Mississippi over the past seven years, last year’s Memorial Day Weekend was particularly deadly.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol recorded nine fatalities on the roads and highways covered by troopers during the 2011 Memorial Day Weekend. The 78 hour Memorial Day Holiday begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday, May 25th and ends at midnight Monday, May 28th (Monday night into Tuesday morning).

“The Memorial Day weekend is the traditional beginning of the summer holiday travel season,” Public Safety Commissioner Albert Santa Cruz said. “One fatality is too many but nine in a 78 hour period is something no one wants to see. We plan to have all available resources out this Memorial Day Weekend to encourage motorists to obey the rules of the road.”

Over the past seven years, there has been a steady decline in the number of statewide fatalities. In 2005, 931 people died on Mississippi roads and highways. Last year, 630 people were killed in traffic crashes.

“Seat belts save lives,” Santa Cruz added. “The motoring public is better educated about the importance of wearing their safety belts and it is making a difference. As a result of the seven-year decline in fatalities, more than 300 people are at home with their families today who did not die in a car crash.

Additionally, MHP will use about $140,000 in federal grants to beef up patrols as the Click It or Ticket campaign continues. Mississippi was one of eight states where the Click It or Ticket campaign began in 2002.

“In 2002, Mississippi’s seat belt usage rate was 50-percent – only half of our motorists wore their safety belts,” MHP Director Colonel Donnell Berry said. “Since then, we have increased seat belt usage to nearly 82%. Even though we’ve had this increase, we are still below the national and regional average and still have work to do.”

The Click It or Ticket grants will increase the patrol’s presence statewide by 378 troopers during the enforcement effort, which began May 21st and will continue until June 3rd.

During the 2011 Memorial Day Holiday, MHP issued 4,643 tickets, investigated 92 crashes, made 117 DUI arrests, and issued 382 seat belt violations and 43 child-restraint violation tickets.
The Independence Day Celebration will be a salute to our country’s troops. The event will include activities in both Old Trace Park and Lakeshore Parks. The parks will host kid zones, live music, food vendors and static military displays.

Patrons of both parks will enjoy the lighted boat parade, and a grand fireworks display which will finish the evening. Admission will be free to all! Both Rankin County and Madison County sides of the reservoir will be able to partake in the celebrations in their local parks.

The Barnett Reservoir Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3, was recently established to promote the reservoir and surrounding businesses. The Foundation looks forward to introducing ourselves to the community with the Independence Day Celebration.

Fireworks had been a tradition at the Barnett Reservoir since the 1980’s. With changes in business ownership around the reservoir, the fireworks went silent after the 2005 show. We hope to make this an annual tradition, becoming bigger and better each year.

Wounded Warriors and Operation PROP will serve as our Grand Marshals for the 1st Annual Lighted Boat Parade. We are honored to be able to partner with these organizations during our salute to our country and troops.

Sponsorship, volunteer help and advertisement are a must to make this event a success.

A VIP section will be provided at the Jackson Yacht Club and tents with parking area will be available for the significant sponsors use.

(L to R) Rep. Mark Baker, Governor Bryant, Sen. Josh Harkins

Governor Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2703 Tuesday afternoon. The bill makes changes to the makeup of the 14 member board of directors for the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District.

The bill, introduced by Senator Josh Harkins, sparked lively debate and survived many amendments before finally passing both chambers.

SB 2703, which takes effect January 1, 2013, requires 8 of the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District board members to be holders of residential leases from the PRVWSD or live in a subdivision that contains leasehold property. The current law requires only one leaseholder.

After January 1, 2013 the PRVWSD board of directors will be made up in the following manner:

1 member directly appointed by the board of supervisors from Hinds, Leake, Scott, Rankin and Madison counties. The appointees from Madison and Rankin counties must be a leaseholder. Five board members are appointed by this rule.

1 member appointed by the governor from a list of 3 names submitted by the board of supervisors from Hinds, Leake, Scott, Rankin and Madison counties. The names submitted by Madison and Rankin counties must be leaseholders. Five board members are appointed by this rule.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, Mississippi Forestry Commission, Mississippi State Board of Health and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, each get one appointment. Their appointee must be a leaseholder. Four members are appointed by this rule.

The full text of the bill is available HERE.
We have asked for crime data for The Rez area from the Rankin County Sheriff's office but their system is, at present, unable to generate area specific reports.
Sheriff Bailey has said he hope to have a solution soon that will allow us to publish crime stats for The Rez area.
Largemouth Bass Stocked at Lake George & Dump Lake

JACKSON - The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, & Parks (MDWFP) stocked approximately 46,000 largemouth bass fingerlings into Lake George and 16,000 into Dump Lake on May 16, 2012.

Both of these oxbow lakes were formed by the Yazoo River and are located in Yazoo County, near Satartia. Recent population assessments have indicated low numbers of young bass; the additional fish were added to help improve the fishery. “Stocking largemouth bass will provide anglers with more fishing opportunities and help boost the overall fishery at these lakes,” according to MDWFP fisheries biologist Jerry Brown. The bass were reared at the North Mississippi Fish Hatchery.

The PRVWSD is required to get orders for 300 tags before any are manufactured - so - get out the check book, fill out the application form and get your order to PRVWSD. It will likely be later in the year before the tags are available as the bill does not become law until July 1, 2012.

The PRVWSD is considering having a contest to produce a design for the tag, more details on that when they become available.

Like all, specialty tags, there will be a $31 additional charge, of that $24 will go back to the PRVWSD and be deposited in a fund that will be used to improve The Rez facilities such as parks, boat launches, etc.

Show the world you support The Rez - pre-order your tag now.

Print off the application form and return it with a check to the Pearl River Valley Water Supply District office in Ridgeland at 115 Madison Landing Circle
or mail the form and check to:

A Reservoir Patrol officer made a traffic stop and radioed in the license number of the driver. The dispatcher runs the number against files maintained by the Mississippi Highway Patrol to make sure the license if valid.
Here is the conversation.
(name and ID info edited out)

When a driver gets a citation and does not pay the fine or show up on their court date a judge will suspend their drivers license. The suspension order is sent to the Mississippi Highway Patrol where it is recorded on their computer database. The reason for the suspension is noted as a "Failure To Appear" or FTA.

This driver had at least 10.

But, the Reservoir Patrol had charges on him and they were kind enough to reserve a room for him at the Rankin County Jail.

Spotted him taking his owners for a walk around The Rez recently and had to snap a picture of this very big dog.

The dog's name is Teddy Bear, he's joined by Will (the second) and Will (the third) Stuart.

Teddy is a Great Pyrenees - 16 months old and weighs 135lbs.

A bit of info about the Great Pyrenees from the American Kennel Club:

The Great Pyrenees dog conveys the distinct impression of elegance and unsurpassed beauty combined with great overall size and majesty. He has a white or principally white coat that may contain markings of badger, gray, or varying shades of tan. He possesses a keen intelligence and a kindly, while regal, expression. Exhibiting a unique elegance of bearing and movement, his soundness and coordination show unmistakably the purpose for which he has been bred, the strenuous work of guarding the flocks in all kinds of weather on the steep mountain slopes of the Pyrenees.

The MDWP Fisheries Bureau and the Mississippi Bass Federation have announced the 2012 Camp Fish schedule.

Camps will be held June 4-7 at Leroy Percy State Park near Hollandale, June 18-21 at the Turcotte Education Center in Madison County, and July 23-26 at Paul B. Johnson State Park near Hattiesburg.

The camp's purpose is to provide opportunities, skills, and resources to Mississippi's youth and introduce them to the sport of fishing. Some of the topics covered during the 4-day camp will include fish identification and aging, fishing tackle and lure selection, casting techniques, types of boats, and conservation techniques. "The camp is much more than kids going fishing," said MDWFP Fisheries Bureau Assistant Director Larry Pugh. "Classroom discussions and hands-on exercises led by MDWFP fisheries biologists will help students gain a better understanding of fish, fishing, and fisheries management."

CAMPFISH Youth ages 11-15 are encouraged to apply. Because of limited space, only 20 applicants will be accepted for each camp. Applications can be downloaded here or visit our our website at mdwfp.com/fishing for more information.

Contact the MDWFP Fisheries Bureau at 601-432-2200 with further questions. Return completed applications to: MDWFP Camp Fish 2012, Attention: Larry Pugh, 1505 Eastover Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.
