Noted British historian Norman Davies returns to Meet The Authors to talk about his book, "No Simple Victory: World War II in Europe, 1939-1945".

Davies crushed the typical Western view of WWII's European Theater as a struggle between freedom and fascism that climaxed with the Normandy landings, and shows how the British and American campaigns were a sideshow when compared to the titanic conflict between the Wehr-macht and the Red Army on the Eastern Front, where most of the fighting and decisive battles occurred. The war was therefore not a simple victory of good over evil, Davies contends, but the defeat of one totalitarian state, Nazi Germany, by another, the Soviet Union, whose crimes were just as vast.

Noted British historian Norman Davies talks about his book Rising '44: The Battle for Warsaw, which covers how Poland tried to rise up against Nazi occupation during World War Two.

The Warsaw rising of 1944—not to be confused with the Warsaw Ghetto uprising of 1943—pitted Polish insurgents of the Home Army against the Germans in a two-month battle that left the city in ruins. Almost as bitter are the historiographical controversies over the failure of the Allies, particularly the Soviets, whose army was idling nearby, to rescue the city.

Mr. Stiff discusses many aspects of the covert war fought by National-Party ruled South Africa towards the end of its rule, including a failed coup of the Seychelles Islands, and attempted control of the black homeland areas

An interesting note in this interview is that Mr. Stiff alleges that Eugene Terreblanche was a government agent, trained by the South African police and inserted into right wing organizations by the police to "bring troublemakers to the forefront".

The Kensington Runestone

In 1898, Swedish immigrant farmer Olof Ohman discovered a 202-lb. tablet engraved with runes while working the fields on his Douglas County, Minnesota property. Ohman claimed the stone was proof that Vikings were in America before Christopher Columbus, but was quickly ruled to be a fraud.
