A quick exchange can turn an unfamiliar purchase into a new favorite.

November is an especially good month to make those connections. With family meals, visiting friends, and holiday gatherings ahead, a market stroll can spark ideas before the planning starts to feel like another job. And you don’t have to be hosting anything to enjoy yourself. Pick up something for your own evening. Take a few minutes to browse. Let dinner be inspired by what catches your eye rather than what’s been sitting on your usual grocery list.

At The Right Slice, we’re looking forward to a month filled with familiar faces and new ones. Maybe you’re stopping by after work, visiting the island for the first time, or bringing home something sweet because an ordinary Sunday deserves a little celebration, too.

For those still finding their footing after the hurricane, we know a new month doesn’t magically put everything back in place. Some days bring progress; other days ask for more patience than we expected. We’re carrying that awareness into this season of gratitude, with appreciation for every person helping our community move forward. Election Day is coming up on Tuesday, November 3, another opportunity to take part in the life of our community. As November begins, let’s keep showing up for one another in all the ways we can. Make the phone call. Invite someone over. Take a break long enough to enjoy your food. And if there happens to be pie on the table, we certainly won’t argue with that.

Today has its own kind of last-minute energy. A costume needs one more adjustment. Someone is looking for the bag they used for candy last year. Somebody bought candy early and has discovered that keeping it in the house for a week was a risky decision. I hope you get to enjoy whichever version of Halloween you like best. Maybe you love walking around with the keiki and seeing what everyone came up with. Maybe you prefer staying home and greeting trick-or-treaters. Maybe you’ll spend the evening with family, dinner, and a movie. A quiet Halloween can be a good one, too. A practical thought before the evening gets away from us: Make a dinner plan. I know it’s tempting to focus on everything else and figure out food later but later tends to arrive when everybody is hungry at once. A pot pie before the festivities can make the night easier. And if you want a grown-up treat that isn’t from the candy bowl, we have a few ideas involving pie.

I’ve also been thinking about everything October held. The Right Slice turned seventeen this month. We talked about favorite pies, local food, community events, and the way the calendar seems to speed up as the holidays approach. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared an anniversary memory, visited us at a market, or brought one of our pies to your table. Those visits mean a great deal to a small business. They’re part of what lets us keep opening the doors, making pies, and doing the work we care about. I hope you know how much we appreciate your support. October also came after a difficult September. Some parts of Kauaʻi are finding their rhythm again, while some neighbors are still recovering from the hurricane. As we head into the busy holiday season, I hope we keep checking in. An offer to bring dinner, help with an errand, or spend an afternoon with someone can make their week a little easier.

For tonight, please be careful on the roads and keep an eye out for keiki. Take a moment to admire a costume someone clearly worked hard on. Say hello to a neighbor. Enjoy a piece of candy if you want one and save room for pie if there’s pie. Tomorrow is November. We’ll be thinking about Thanksgiving soon enough. First, let’s enjoy Halloween and close out October together.

The chocolate crowd is usually quick to answer. Give them something rich, and they’re happy. Pumpkin has people who wait for this part of the year and are ready to defend their choice. Fruit pie fans can make a good case for something bright after a meal, especially when lilikoi gets involved. The most interesting people are the ones who say, “It depends.” Depends on what? The weather? The meal? Who else is at the table? What you had for lunch? I want the whole explanation. As someone who spends a lot of time around pie, I can confirm that “it depends” is sometimes the most honest answer.

While we’re talking about food, have you thought about Halloween dinner? It is easy to spend all your time on costumes, plans, and candy, then realize everyone needs a meal before they go anywhere. If that sounds like your house, let a pot pie do some of the work. It’s much nicer to begin the evening fed than to sort out dinner when everyone is tired. The final days of October have me thinking about more than holidays, too. For some of our neighbors, the hurricane is beginning to feel further away. For others, it’s still present every time they walk into a room that needs repair or look at another task on their list. As you make your weekend plans, consider checking in with someone you haven’t spoken to recently. You don’t need a perfect thing to say. Asking how they’re doing is a good start.

Now I’m returning to the question we can actually have some fun with. If I put pumpkin, chocolate, and fruit pies in front of you, which one gets the first slice cut? If fruit is your answer, you have to name the flavor. And yes, you’re allowed to tell us you’d take more than one home.

I’ve been thinking about how differently people can show up for their community. Some have the time and energy to volunteer for hours. Some can support a local vendor when they’re out with family. Some are helping a neighbor with one task nobody else even knows about. All of those things count. That became especially clear after the hurricane. There were big needs that required a lot of people and equipment. There were also smaller needs that mattered deeply to the person dealing with them: a meal, a ride, help picking something up, or a phone call to ask how the day was going.

The smaller things can be easy to overlook once regular life gets busy again. Someone may be back at work and still managing repairs at home. Someone else may have finished the cleanup but be worn out by everything it took to get there. I hope we keep asking how people are doing even when the hurricane is no longer the first thing everyone talks about. Events like today’s give us places to reconnect. You might go to lend a hand at Lydgate. You might walk for someone you love. You might head downtown, see a familiar face, and spend twenty minutes catching up. Sometimes that conversation is the most useful thing either person does all day. I also hope there’s room to enjoy yourself. If you’ve been working hard since the storm, a little music or an evening out doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten anyone. We all need moments that give us energy for the days ahead.

Our own Saturday has a pretty familiar schedule: bake pies, help customers, and try to keep up with the things a busy shop asks of us. If your plans take you near The Right Slice, stop by. A pot pie can be dinner after an event. A sweet pie can go with you if you’re visiting friends. And if you’re spending the day at home, a slice is just as welcome there.
