Welcome to a New Guild Year!

The RIQG Board welcomes everyone back for another
year of new projects, new skills, finishing UFO’s,
friendship building, and general creative merrymaking.
We want to express a big THANKS! to the ladies who
have volunteered to participate in the guild as board
members, coordinators or specialists. Our board and
coordinators have come up with some fabulous projects,
workshops and ideas that are sure to please everyone.
This first newsletter will give you an overview of each of
the different project areas with specific details to follow
in coming months. If you’ve been actively creating all
summer, we hope you can squeeze in a guild project or
two in the coming months. If your quilting and creating
has taken the back seat to other things this summer, it’s
time to dust off the sewing machine and blow out the
cobwebs in that creative mind. Let’s have a great year!

We are accepting new membership!

Welcome back everyone. The hot summer months has seen us winding down our activities. A number of our members traveled abroad to visit new places, friends or family at this time. Some even went to exciting Quilt shows in the summer! We shall look forward to members sharing their experiences at the quilt shows.

We are privileged this year to hold our meetings in Craft Kingdom. This allows us better access and better still, we could nip in and shop before or after the meeting. Due to local custom, we respectfully ask that you leave your men at the door. We have also changed the meeting day and time. We now meet every third Saturday of the month (Click on meeting tab to see dates) from 09:30 to 13:00. Workshops are from 13:00 to 16:00.

At the September meeting, we got to hear about every single member (old and new), where they come from, where they live and when they started quilting. There were 14 different nationalities in the room! How exciting! Members of this year's board also had to share their favorite sewing/quilting tool. (Heads up ladies there will be a favorite sewing tool swap in January.)

The winners for door prizes this month are: Veronika, Linda and Evelyn D. Congratulations ladies!

If you are new to Riyadh or new to quilting and would like to get in touch with other quilters this is your chance!

Mothers?! This is your chance to leave your children with the husband and hangout with other ladies!
Working? Our new schedule will suit you better! No more night treks to a compound at the other side of town where you may be refused entry if you forgot to bring your ID.
Our new location is very close to the new Financial District. Husbands may choose to browse at Saco world (Exit 5) or Abyat while waiting.

About the Riyadh International Quilt Guild

The Riyadh International Quilt Guild is open to women in Riyadh. We meet once a month from September to May. We promote and support the art of quilting. The guild provides an opportunity for the ladies to learn, exchange information, ideas and share their enthusiasm for the craft.

Our members are represented by all ages, and quilting abilities, from beginners to international award winners. At our last count, our membership has been from 12 different nationalities around the world, all come together for the love of quilting.

Annual membership dues are 150sr, or come as a guest for 30sr. We have an exciting program planned for the monthly meetings, with opportunities to show finished quilts or works in progress. Members stand a chance to win a quilt related door prize each month. Participate in our Block of the Month program where instructions are given. Members participate in special events such an annual bus trip to the Al Zamil craft store for fabric and other quilting supplies. It's a fun day out with the ladies!

This year we have been privileged to hold our monthly meeting at Craft Kingdom. So ladies will have an opportunity to shop during the break or after the meeting. Interested? Email riyadhquiltguild@gmail.com for more information

It was last meeting for long time members, Marisol, Marilyn, Medina and Janet, but we also had guest, Robin, Martina and Audrey, who are new quilters on Seder Compound. Robina another guest, was also welcomed.

The prizes were:

· Marilyn – needle inserter

· Frauke – quilting tape

· Gladys – needle inserter

· Julie – binding miter tool

On May 17 there will be a workshop from Noura, our judge from Jubail: Wedding ring table runner.

Abeer won the first prize in the “Innovation in Art” category at the Dubai International Quilt

Show in March. She also won judge Ricky Tims favorite and viewer’s choice. She brought along her quilt to show everyone. Once again “Congratulations Abeer”.

Janet also displayed her quilt that she entered.

Janet and Siti showed their thread holders they made at Gladys’s workshop.

Evelyn showed a lovely small quilt with a pink heart that was quilted with techniques learnt at

Cindy Needham’s workshop in Dubai, and she then presented it to Marilyn as a goodbye gift.

Frauke showed another lovely baby quilt, Janet a pink quilt that is to Canada with Marilyn.

Nadine showed the first quilt she has made courtesy of Evelyn’s beginners class.

Corina presented Janet with a series of lovely yellow ducks.

Corina displayed a fabric book to keep blocks in.

March meeting

Our march meeting was special in different ways: we had a special quest, Judy, she joined us via Skype at 6am NZ time, and we had our BBQ swap (see post).

The monthly prizes went to Odette (fray check), Karen (ruler) and Renate (marking pencil).

The BOM's should be finished by May 20, in time for the AGM on 25 May 2014. She offered to hold a day where people who had missed out on any of the workshops could attend, tentatively scheduled at the end of April, details will be emailed to members.

Challenge Quilt needs to be completed and handed to either Evelyn or Allison by May 14.
We will have two judges, Noura from Jubail and Debra from Jeddah; both are experienced quilters and have quilt stores of their own. It is possible that Noura will run a workshop while she is here, details to be confirmed, places will be limited, so it will be a first come, first served.

Evelyn displayed the finished charity quilt; she has named it “Burst of Light” which the guild agreed was a good choice. Members were invited to take raffle tickets, at a cost of 20 Riyals each. The charity we are supporting is The ADHD Society (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). Allison met with them and they were happy to be a recipient. In February meeting we had several new guests:

Tehseen a beginning quilter who has moved to Riyadh from Dubai and her friend Rihanna.
Janetsa a friend of Claire’s who showed us a lovely blue bag with embellishments she had made,
Shelley who has recently arrived in Riyadh, she came with her Bernina and 11 bags of fabric!

Door prizes, Gladys won safety pins, Yvonne, steam a seam, and Julie a thread sniper.

Charity Quilt was a successful 2 day event, Evelyn bought along the finished top, paper pieced blue and yellow pineapple blocks.

The thimble swap was a success, some interesting and unusual thimbles were shared:

Facebook page is up and running, for current members and past members, it is a closed group; you have to ask to join. Good place to share what we are working on, asking other members for help and advice.

Yvonne did a presentation about thread painting which is included in the next block for the BOM. She recommended Terry White as a got to person.

Marisol donated some books to our library.

Show and Tell, our guest Tehseen showed a quilt she had done; Nadine showed a pencil case she had made from fabric from a dress she bought at the Princess Souk.

22nd September Meeting

Our First Guild Meeting for 2013-2014 was a great success, with many new members joining us. We have a lot to look forward to this year! The board members presented the guild activities and exciting new projects. Please click on the tabs above for detailed information on the Challenge, BOM and Swaps.

This year the Guild will be making a “Pineapple Quilt” which will be given to charity. Members are asked to donate “tone on tone” cotton fabrics in shades of blue and yellow. Fabric scraps from 2 ½ “x 5” will be collected from members next meeting.

Evelyn presented the “Challenge Quilt” for the year. The theme is “Your Initials”, members will be emailed all the instructions.

Janet introduced the “Block of the Month” project; it is a non-traditional quilt and nice souvenir of living in Saudi Arabia. It promises to be an exciting project with a lot of new techniques.

The first BOM is Prairie Points:

Many ladies took the brown bags for the "BBQ" swap.

Planning is under way for the Annual bus trip to Al Khobar to visit the Al-Zamil Craft Store, to purchase fabric, notions and any other craft you may be interested in. This is tentatively scheduled for the 9 or 16 November. Members can bring along friends. Price for the bus will be announced.

December Christmas dinner date is to be confirmed. It will include a “Secret Santa placemat” with a Christmas theme, any technique, Christmas colors preferred, they must be wrapped and will be swapped at dinner.

For our end of year quilt exhibition, Allison is looking at new venues.

Announcements

There will be a Quilt Display in the Sedar Compound Coffee Shop from 9.30 am on 26th May before and during the AGM.

The AGM Meeting will be at the Seder Restaurant from 7:00 for 7:30 pm, Sunday 26^th May and folled by the AGM Dinner. Dinner is SR100 per person. Guests and husbands welcome.

2^nd VP - Allison

A Charity Quilt Day Workshop for Sandwiching and Binding using fabulous new “stick” technique was held during the last month. There was also a second session for the "Zippered Pouches" Workshop.

There are no workshops planned for May as members are completing their projects for the AGM.

“Sign Up” sheet for names was passed around for the AGM Dinner.

BOM - Sharon

“In a Japanese Garden”

Many beautiful blocks were on display and included the Apple Blossom tree, the Snow Circle and two completed quilts produced by Janet and Renate, which were all beautifully done.

Lucky incentive draw winner was Sharon who won a pack of Quilt carbon papers.

Members are encouraged to have their BOM completed for display at the AGM in May.

The guidelines are:

· Quilt to be assembled with the traditional 3 layers (top, batting, backing)

· Edges to be finished - binding

· Hanging Sleeve

· After discussion it was felt that BOM top only would also be acceptable

· Collection Points are Evelyn’s, Joy’s Shoppe and Frauke on Seder compound

Alice is away on holiday but in her absence it was noted that Entry Forms and the criteria will be emailed to Members by the end of April.

Library –

In Cindy’s absence Marilyn collected in the library books. The library is closed now for the end of 2012/2013 and will re-open again September 2013/2014.

President Bernice - General Business

AGM, Election of Executive and Coordinator Positions for 2013-14

It is the time of the year for member to think about these positions and their contribution to the Guild. Bernice emailed nomination forms out to individual members asking them to consider volunteering for positions on the Board. So far we do not have a President or 1^st VP or 2^nd VP or Secretary. Bernice pointed out that without these Executive positions being filled there will be no Guild in 2013 / 2014 and she asked everyone to reflect on volunteering for these positions.

President’s Chosen Charity

President Bernice proposed supporting the "Family Safety Program for Battered and Abused Women and Children in Riyadh" as this year's Guild charity. From “working” mornings we have some completed quilts and some tops finished are ready for binding while others still need some assembly. Bernice made a request for ‘orphan blocks’ and unwanted UFO’s to be handed in and used for the charity. Members could also donate a quilt and/or materials and especially time. Bernice will be inviting Dr Maha Al Muneef, the Organiser of the Program, to attend the AGM to present her with some completed quilts and perhaps present her with more quilts which will be made during the summer recess.

Programme - Sharon

Sharon gave a ‘hands on’ demonstration of Kanzashi Japanese Fabric Folding Flowers. Members brought pre-cut fabric and folded the fabric this way and that to create pretty flowers. Allison thanked Sharon for doing the demonstration and gave her a pack of six fat quarters.

Show and Tell

Not sure what to do with those outgrown T-shirts? Crystal made this wonderful memento-quilt for a friend using his old 's T-shirts; and her multi-coloured triangle quilt was more proof of her quilting talents!

Crystal also gave us her ‘name block’ for the member’s wall-hanging as she leaves next month to live in Mumbai. Best wishes Cindy!

Congrats to Cindy who will soon be a first time grandmom! The lucky baby will receive the lovely pink quilt below that Cindy made as one of her first quilting projects. Janette's two lovely flannel rag quilts will be keeping some lucky person warm! All three quilts are great examples of the hidden talents of these newby quilters!

And some experienced quilters just have too much talent!!! Glady's "Monthly Monday (M&M) " quilt and her "Stars and Triangle Table Runner" and Bernice's pink, white and green Millennium quilt left us in awe!

Many beautiful Blocks were on display including the Apple Blossom tree, the Crane, kimonos including a 3d block and the Sacred Gate - all beautifully done. Lucky incentive draw winner was Cindy.

Sharon showed the “Snow Circle “ which is the final block - a Sashiko embroidered block with a padded fabric applique circle around the centred embroidery design.

Sharon demonstrated how to make a “bow” for the Kimono.

Program - Janette

Topic - “Janette’s Journey - Dyeing”

This was a very informative, interesting and unique presentation. Janette’s kitchen will never be the same after “cooking” the variety of spices and vegetables to create natural dyes. A new “language” with strange terms and names was also introduced, for example ”mordants” and the use of common products such as vinegar and baking soda in the dyeing process. Then it was the bugs (very dead and in a jar) called “cochineal” and the vibrant colour to be gained in using this dye. Other dyeing products include Alkernet, Madder and Indigo as well as Inkodye for dyeing in the sun and the familiar acid commercial dyes. Other influencing factors in dyeing and colours achieved include the type of fabric, the fabric protein content, the water, and the mordant used.

Show and Tell

From rags to riches!
Cindy made a “Rag Quilt” made for a baby gift.

Show and Tell included three President’s Charity Quilts- a quilt as you go row quilt and two other quilts using a variation of the Rail Block pattern.

Bernice realized that fabrics she thought she didn't like were actually lovely when put together with imagination and style!

Alison doubled our pleasure by showing her two quilts for the President's Charity!

Corina then spoke to us about a “Go Green” box she had made using supermarket plastic bags, which had been knitted together. The sides were made with more plastic bag “squares” by ironing two layers of plastic between paper, then cut into squares and stitched together with some more embellishments. Finally Corina gave us a treat of showing us postcards with an “Owl” theme (thinking of wisdom) made by using a variety of techniques using paint, fabric, buttons to name a few.

24 February 2013 Meeting Minutes

The President Bernice opened the meeting and welcomed members and one guest, Soni from Toronto.

The door prize draws resulted in Siti winning a block viewer, Alice quilting snips and Elke, a small ruler.

A successful workshop, run by Allison, making zippered pouches had been held last week and another workshop making box shaped zippered bags is to be held 28^th March. Allison is pricing this as buy one class get one class free, thus if you did the first class you can do the class on 28^th free. If you did not attend the first class but would like to attend this class on 28^th there will a charge of SR100.

A Quilt along day will be held 21^st March for members wanting help with their Fabric Swap project, Go Green Challenge, BOM pieces or working on the charity quilts. Sign-up sheets were passed round for members to indicate their intention to come along for the workshops. Allison also called for volunteers for a programme presentation.

Block of the Month. Members brought along their finished pieces of the Japanese lantern and Japanese Crane and Marilyn won a pincushion for her efforts. Sharon was absent so Allison and Bernice gave advice on making this month’s BOM pieces of the Kimono and the Sacred Gate.

Go Green Challenge Janette talked about the forthcoming competition in May for the “Go Green” Challenge and explained the application form. She illustrated her talk by showing us her ‘Birds on a Wire’ quilt. On judging day – 26^th May, viewers will be given 3 tokens each to choose ‘Best interpretation of theme’, ‘Best use of embellishment’, and ‘Best use of colour’. The quilt with the most accumulated votes will also be deemed ‘Best in show’

Fabric Swap Alice announced that there will be a competition – “Day of Judgement Fabric Swap” on 26^th May our AGM meeting. Using a minimum of 50% of the fabrics from the fabric swap we are encouraged to make a quilt, bag or garment etc. Projects are left to the creativity of the individual. This month’s fabric swap was brown coloured textured fabrics.

Blog Rae leaves KSA soon and a new blog co-ordinator is sought. Ursula took the photos this month for the blog records.

Charity quilts The next workshop for the Charity quilt making will be on 7^th March. Batting and extra wide backing fabrics are needed to continue making quilts for this worthwhile cause.

Programme Bernice gave a presentation entitled “Labour of love, Label of love” different techniques for constructing labels and the information needed on the labels was outlined. We were urged to label quilts and not leave it to chance that future generations wonder who made this quilt and when, as we owe it to our descendants to tell them about our part of this historical revival in quilt making.

The meeting closed with members admiring and studying Show and Tell quilts brought in by members. Frauke showed us 2 baby quilts, Elke brought her maple leaf quilt, Cindy showed a completed UFO – a table runner, Marisol showed us her mini post-cards and a large quilt completed from a tutorial, Allison showed us her ‘Tommy Hilfiger’ type quilt. Finally there was a selection of zippered bags from the Zip along workshop.
