Hi Listeners,
It is with much regret that I shall no longer be running my internet radio station on Live365. The playlist will cease at the end of my subscription period on Tuesday 17th of January, 2012.

It is due to health reasons that I can no longer continue.

I have really enjoyed the last 8 and a half years being the Rock Doctor, and have appreciated all your contacts and comments during this time from all over the world.

I am also grateful to the many artists/bands who have made contact with me and sent their discs for inclusion on the playlists. I am sure this added to your listening pleasure.

McCartney to start sightseeing business?

Singer wants to offer his own magical mystery tours of Liverpool

Paul McCartney wants to start his own sightseeing business, according to reports.

The Winnipeg Free Press claims that the Beatles legend wants to "give something back" to Liverpool by starting his own touring company, which will give punters a look into his own personal experiences of his home city.

McCartney said "I would really love to start a sightseeing business. I have my own magical mystery tours of the city, my own special route I go on and I think other people would love it, too. I want to give something back to the locals".

Last week (January 9), McCartney announced that his forthcoming new album would be called 'Kisses On The Bottom'. The album, which will be released on February 6, is made up of songs that the singer listened to as a child as well as two new songs, 'My Valentine' and 'Only Our Hearts'.

The tracklisting for 'Kisses On The Bottom', which will feature contributions from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, is as follows:

Tom Petty announces June UK shows

The US legend will preview Isle Of Wight headline slot with short tour

Tom Petty has announced a short UK and Ireland tour for June.

The singer, along with his band The Heartbreakers, will play gigs in Dublin, Cork and London in June. All three shows precede his headline slot at the Isle Of Wight Festival.

Petty will first play Dublin's O2 Arena on June 7, then Cork's 'Live At The Marquee' event on June 8 and finally London's Royal Albert Hall on June 20.

Petty headlines Isle Of Wight Festival two days after the London show on June 22, with Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen acting as the event's other headliners.

The singer released his most recent album 'Mojo' last year, it was the 12th studio album of his career thus far.

Velvet Underground get legal with Apple

The Velvet Underground, the band formed by Lou Reed and John Cale in the 60s, has taken legal action against the Andy Warhol Foundation for selling his iconic Banana album design to Apple.

The artwork was originally used on the 1967 album 'The Velvet Underground & Nico'.

The lawsuit this time claims the image is symbolic of the band and fans relate to the image as The Velvet Underground. They claim that by selling the image to Apple for iPad and iPhone products that the Andy Warhol Foundation is cheapening the name of The Velvet Underground and associating them with a product they would never endorse.

However, the artwork was never copyrighted because Andy Warhol originally licenced the image from an ad.

The album was a commercial failure in its day. It entered the Billboard chart in May 13, 1967 at no. 199 and was out by June 10, 1967 after only getting to no. 177. The group disbanded in 1973 and in years to come the album went on to become one of the most important records of its time.

Bryan Ferry marries for the second time

Singer ties the knot with Amanda Sheppard in the Caribbean

Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry has married his girlfriend Amanda Sheppard in a "simple, private ceremony".

According to the Daily Telegraph, the veteran singer tied the knot with the fashion PR on January 4 at the exclusive Amanyara resort. The pair have been dating since being introduced by one of Ferry's sons in 2009.

Confirming the marriage, 66-year-old Ferry commented on the 37-year age gap between the pair, saying "You never meet people your own age who aren’t married. Unless they are divorcees knocking about, that sort of thing. He also refused to rule out having children with Sheppard, stating: "Oh, I never feel comfortable predicting the future."

Ferry divorced his first wife, Lucy Helmore, in 2003 after 21 years of marriage. He has four sons from the relationship - Merlin, Tara, Isaac and Otis.

The singer was hospitalised with heart problems last year, but has said he now feels much fitter.

Ferry's last album was 2010's 'Olympia', which included collaborations with the likes of Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood and Scissor Sisters.

Sabbath ask fans to send 'vibes' to guitarist

Black Sabbath have asked fans to send 'positive vibes' to guitarist Tony Iommi after he was diagnosed with lymphoma.

The rocker, 63, recently reunited with bandmates Ozzy Osbourne, bass player Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward to work on a new album - their first offering for 33 years.

Black Sabbath insisted they would continue work on the album as Iommi continued to get treatment.

The heavy metal band said in a statement: 'Iommi is currently working with his doctors to establish the best treatment plan - the Iron Man of rock & roll remains upbeat and determined to make a full and successful recovery.'

Black Sabbath were set to play Download Festival this summer.

Their former manager Jim Simpson told the Birmingham Mail: 'The last time I saw Tony was in the summer and he looked very healthy. He has always been doggedly determined.

'He was always very serious and I don't think he'd do anything without giving it a lot of thought. I'm sure Tony will apply the same dogged determination to beating this.'

Ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist dies at 64

Former axeman passes away aged 64 after suffering gastric intestinal hemorrhage and cirrhosis of the liver

Ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston has been found dead at his home in London.

The 64-year-old, who played with the band during the early 1970s, was discovered after local neighbours became concerned and notified the police on Tuesday (January 3).

Police said today (January 6) that his death is not being treated as suspicious and an autopsy revealed that he died from a gastric intestinal hemorrhage, cirrhosis of the liver and throat problems.

Close friend Steve Fairhead wrote on Weston's official website Bobweston.com "My family and I have lost a dear friend; the world has lost an enormously talented musician, with unfinished business".

Weston joined Fleetwood Mac in 1972, replacing then guitarist Danny Kirwan. He played on the albums 'Penguin' and 'Mystery To Me'.

But the following year, drummer Mick Fleetwood discovered Weston was having an affair with his wife, Jenny Boyd and he was fired from the band.

He went on to release three solo albums, his last effort being his 1999 LP 'There's A Heaven'. Weston also worked with late Small Faces member Steve Marriott, Long John Baldry, Murray Head, and Sandy Denny.

Keith Richards has laser eye surgery

'Not even the seemingly immortal Keith Richards can stop the march of time,' says friend

The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards has undergone laser eye surgery to help save his failing vision, according to reports.

The Daily Mirror claims that despite Richards' reputation for surviving years of rock'n'roll debauchery, the guitarist had the procedure before Christmas in London and had been forced to wear an eyepatch after having the operation.

A source close to the rocker said "He's music's ultimate survivor but not even the seemingly immortal Keith Richards can stop the march of time. It was a harmless, quick procedure and he's very happy with the results".

Richards' previous medical scrapes include a head injury he sustained after falling out of a tree while holidaying in Fiji. The Rolling Stones were forced to postpone their European tour after he was forced to undergo a brain operation as a result of the accident.

Last year, it was reported that Richards and Mick Jagger were set to discuss plans for the 50th anniversary of the first Rolling Stones gig, which takes place on July 20, 2012. The pair are thought to have put aside their recent squabbles and are allegedly in talks with concert promoters regarding the possibility of a world tour

Abbey Road: studio doors open to public

Iconic studio were used by The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush & The Zombies

London's Abbey Road Studios are set to welcome members of the public into the legendary Studio Two, which has been used by The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Kate Bush.

Two tours and talks will take place on March 10 as part of the studio's 80th anniversary celebrations. Led by Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan, authors of Recording The Beatles, the pair will deliver an audio visual presentation entitled 80 Years of Recording at Abbey Road Studios using archive photos, film and audio.

It will cover recordings made in the studio by Sir Edward Elgar, The Shadows, Peter Sellers, Helen Shapiro, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Hollies, The Zombies and Kate Bush as well as film scores recorded in Studio Two, such as those for the movies Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

Vintage equipment used in the recording of classic tracks and albums will also be on display.

Tickets are on sale now and cost £75. There will be two presentations on March 10, one at 10am and another 3pm.

Paul McCartney Names New Album

Singer confirms cheeky title for new LP

Paul McCartney has revealed that his new album will be called 'Kisses On The Bottom'.

Following reports in The Sun that the LP's title had been leaked online, representatives for the singer have confirmed that 'Kisses On The Bottom' is the name of the new record from the Beatles legend.

It was announced in December that McCartney, who reportedly doubled his earnings in 2011 to make £29 million, will release a new studio album featuring covers of some of his favourites songs, as well as two new compositions, on February 6 this year.

On January 1 Paul McCartney hit out at bands who play live using backing tapes and vowed to never rely on them during his own gigs.

Iron Butterfly guitarist dies

Psychedelic rocker Larry Reinhardt was 63

Larry Reinhardt, guitarist with classic psychedelic rockers Iron Butterfly, has died at the age of 63.

Larry Reinhardt, also known as 'Rhino', passed away yesterday (January 2) after being admitted to hospital with an infection last week. He was moved into intensive care on January 1 and then placed on life support.

Born in Florida in 1948, Reinhardt began his music career in the 1960s, performing with The Load and The Second Coming with Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley, both of whom went on the join The Allman Brothers Band.

He replaced Erik Brann in Iron Butterfly alongside Mike Pinera, working with the band on their fourth album, 1970's 'Metamorphosis'. He joined the band after the release of their biggest hit, 1968's 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida', which was taken from the 25 million selling album of the same name.

After Iron Butterfly broke up, Reinhardt and Lee Dorman formed Captain Beyond with Rod Evans from Deep Purple and Bobby Caldwell from Johnny Winter, reports Sarasota Patch. The band split in 1977.

Reinhardt then formed his own band Rhino in 1979, who released their final album last year.

The Rock Doctor would like to wish all his listeners and readers a very Happy New Year!

I still have a few songs that I am still searching for the artist\band name for one of my listeners to my radio station. I have had this part-only song for several years now, so you will hear it is quite a difficult song and artist to identify.

The song was recorded off-air from a Brazilian pirate radio station sometime in the seventies, I have been through nearly all of the artists\bands that I have in my playlist (over 82,000 songs now!!). Still nowhere near finding the artist for my listener. Now you have finished Stuffing the presents and wrapping the turkey (or something like that!) how about helping him find this artist please.

The Doors' five-disc set is cancelled

A planned five-disc super deluxe edition of the Doors' 1971 album L.A. Woman has been scrubbed by Rhino Records.

Original announced by the Doors' manager back in September, it seems that Rhino has decided that a set of this size was not commercially viable.

The manager, Jeff Jampol, said in the group's on-line forum "there are concerns at [Rhino's] end" and "they want to be sure that not only is the market there, but do we have a place to distribute them?

It will probably be not be an expensive, all-out designed hard box but instead will probably be reduced to a 3-disc set (with just the alternates/outtakes/chatter), and packaged so as to be affordable."

Currently on the schedule is a two-disc version of the album on January 24 followed by the three-disc version later in the year. Most likely, the three-disc album will be a limited edition with few or no repeated tracks. This, in essence, would equal the five-disc version but done in two separate albums.

Frampton sues label over digital royalties

Peter Frampton is suing his record label over unpaid digital music royalties.

The Tennessean reports Frampton has filed suit against Universal Music Group for a half-million dollars in unpaid digital music royalties and for unspecified damages, making him the latest artist to take a label to court on such claims.

Rapper Eminem’s producers prevailed on similar claims earlier this year.

Frampton filed suit Friday afternoon in a Los Angeles federal court.

On Thursday, an heir to the drummer for The Knack, a rock band best known for the 1979 hit “My Sharona,” filed suit claiming Capitol Records similarly withheld digital music royalties.

Each of the suits was brought by Nashville attorney Richard Busch, a partner with King & Ballow.

Busch represents Eminem’s producers, Frampton, and Felice Catena, the sister and heir to The Knack drummer Bruce Gary, who died in 2006.

“The issues in these cases go beyond simply breach of contract,” Busch said. “The plaintiffs allege the wrongdoing here is a part of deliberate effort to deprive the parties of their royalties.”

The disputes all center on the question of how revenue should be shared between artists and record labels in sales of digital music — basically, songs downloaded on services such as iTunes or Amazon or ring tones sold through phone providers.

Record labels have argued that online sales should be treated the same as physical album sales, with the company getting a lion’s share of the royalties for such transactions, typically between 80 percent and 90 percent.

Artists have argued that because the sale of music online involves none of the expenses that record labels typically incur for selling an album — such as packaging and shipping — they’re entitled to the same larger royalty checks that artists typically get for music licensed to movies or TV shows. That is most often a 50/50 royalty split.

Aerosmiths Steven Tyler 'engaged'

Steven Tyler is rumoured to be engaged. The star's long-term girlfriend Erin Brady was spotted wearing a huge diamond ring on her left hand over the weekend.

According to TMZ, sources close to the couple have confirmed it is an engagement ring. The pair went to Maui for a tropical Christmas day together. It is not clear whether 63-year-old Steven proposed before or after the trip.

The couple have been together since 2006. Before they began dating Erin had already witnessed Steven's famous womanising ways. She used to tour with Aerosmith as their accountant.

The 38-year-old had a unique way of dealing with his behaviour.

"I saw him, how he behaved. badly, but I just said, 'Hey, listen, if you're going to play, I'm going to play. I just want to make that clear to you.' And he didn't really like it I don't think, when he was on the other side of that scenario,' she told Oprah Winfrey in an interview with both her and Steven.

The American Idol judge has been married twice before. In 1978 he wed Cyrinda Foxe, who he divorced in 1987. He then married clothing designer Teresa Barrick in 1988 and they split formally in 2006. He has also had a string of high-profile romances, including a brief fling with model Bebe Buell. The pair had daughter Liv Tyler together.

Mothers Of Invention Jim Sherwood dies

Jim 'Motorhead' Sherman from Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention died on Christmas Day at the age of 69.

Sherwood was the sax player and vocals and vocal sounds effects for the Mothers and played on the Zappa albums '200 Motels', 'Burnt Weeny Sandwich', 'Weasals Ripped My Flesh' and 'We're Only In It For The Money'.

He also appeared in Zappa's films '200 Motels', 'Video From Hell' and 'Uncle Meat'.

After the demise of The Mothers Sherwood occasionally got together with other ex-Mothers and performed as The Grandmothers.

Shewood and Frank Zappa were childhood friends. They met in 1956. Jim was in the same class at school with Frank's brother Bobby Zappa. Jim and Frank first played together in 1964 in Zappa's very first band The Blackouts.

He joined the Mothers of Invention initially as a roadie and contributed sound effects to the first album 'Freak Out' in 1966. In 1967 he became a full-time member of the band.

Jim's nickname was Motorhead, named because he was always repairing old cars, trucks and motorbikes.

Squire and Hackett form Squackett

Details are few at this time but it has been announced that two classic rock icons, Chris Squire and Steve Hackett are joining forces in a new band called Squackett.

The pair have signed with Esoteric Records which is part of Cherry Red Records. Their first album will be released on May 8; however, further details won't be released until sometime in January.

Chris Squire has been part of Yes from the very beginning and is now the only member who has appeared on every one of the group's albums. He has also released two solo albums, Fish Out of Water (1975) and Chris Squire's Swiss Choir (2007).

Steve Hackett was a member of Genesis from their album Nursery Crime (1971) through Wind and Wuthering (1976). Since then, he has had a successful solo career along with being part of the group GTR with Steve Howe.

Paul McCartney 'falls offstage' at gig

It’s unusual for him to be clumsy,’ says source of Macca’s tumble

Paul McCartney ended his homecoming show in Liverpool by falling off the stage, according to reports.

The singer, who recently announced he would be releasing a new album featuring covers of his favourite songs on February 6 next year, reportedly took a tumble down the stairs when leaving the stage at the Liverpool Echo Arena yesterday evening (December 20).

According to The Sun, a source reported "He's not accident-prone so it's unusual for him to be clumsy. He saw the funny side". Earlier this week,

Paul McCartney posted the first single from his forthcoming and as-yet-untitled LP online. The track, which is a new composition called 'My Valentine', is a collaboration with Eric Clapton. You can hear the song by clicking the link below.

Paul McCartney Sets New Album Release

42 West sent over big news for Paul McCartney fans. The Beatles legend has announced a BRAND NEW as yet untitled album to be released on February 7th 2012. The album is a glimpse into "the songs which inspired the songs" with a tribute to his personal favourites- plus two new McCartney compositions.

Here is the official word: WHILE many a musician is often asked about the tunes that have influenced their songwriting, it is not a question Paul McCartney ordinarily gets to answer – until now. Paul is about to offer a glimpse into "the songs which inspired the songs" with the upcoming release of a brand new album of those standards he grew up listening to in his childhood—plus two brand new McCartney compositions: the album, which is currently untitled, will be released on Hear Music/Concord Records on February 7th 2012.

With the help of Grammy Award-winning producer Tommy LiPuma and Diana Krall and her band—as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, McCartney's new album is a deeply personal journey through classic American compositions that, in some cases, a young Paul first heard his father perform on piano at home. As authentic and daring a musical statement as he could make, this is the album Paul has been thinking about making for more than 20 years - and probably the last thing his fans are expecting. "In the end it was 'Look, if I don't do it now, I'll never do it," he says.

In short, Paul believes it is about time "the songs me and John based quite a few of our things on" received the recognition they deserve. Moreover, the record also features a couple of new original McCartney compositions in the spirit of those classics.

"When I kind of got into songwriting, I realised how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them," Paul explains. "I always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of those guys - I just thought the songs were magical. And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it's beautiful, the way they made those song'."

Determined to approach the record in a new and unique manner, Paul enlisted the help of LiPuma and Krall and her band—who delivered ultra-high quality musicianship and were completely in tune with Paul's restraint and feel for the music. In the studio, the recording of this album was also a new challenge for Paul who, for the first time ever, performed exclusively in the vocal booth without no instrument – no guitar, no bass, no piano - which led to a vocal performance like no other in his career.

He adds, "It was very spontaneous, kind of organic, which then reminded me of the way we'd work with The Beatles. We'd bring a song in, kick it around, when we found a way to do it we'd say 'Okay, let's do a take now' and by the time everyone kind of had an idea of what they were doing, we'd learnt the song. So that's what we did, we did the take live in the studio."

"It was important for me to keep away from the more obvious song choices so, many of the classic standards will be unfamiliar to some people. I hope they are in for a pleasant surprise."

The album was recorded at the legendary Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, New York and London throughout 2011. It also features guest musicians Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder, respectively, on the original compositions 'My Valentine' and 'Only Our Hearts'.

Bowie Top of the Pops footage found

A retired cameraman has been speaking of the moment he realised he owned footage of David Bowie on Top of the Pops which was thought to be lost.

John Henshall, 69, from Stanford-in-the-Vale, Oxfordshire, retained a copy of Bowie performing Jean Genie in 1973.

He said: "I just couldn't believe that I was the only one with it. I just thought you wouldn't be mad enough to wipe a tape like that." It was unveiled on Sunday at an event held by the British Film Institute. The annual event, Missing Believed Wiped, was the first time the footage had been seen since January 1973.

Mr Henshall said he only kept it because he wanted it for his showreel. In the footage he used Telefex Fisheye lenses which he had designed himself. He also ended up in the background of one of the shots.

After the recording he asked producers for a personal copy on 2in (5cm) broadcast videotape.

Mr Henshall said: "I didn't realise that it had been wiped by the BBC. "They'd been looking for it for years, hoping that somebody had maybe pointed an 8mm home movie camera at the screen, because there was no VHS in those days.

"I didn't realise that anybody wanted it. I'd just had it because it was my Fisheye. I had loads of ideas for optical effects back then."

Bowie's performance of Jean Genie was recorded on 3 January 1973 and transmitted the following day for the first and only time.

After realising he had a "rarer than rare" piece of television history, Mr Henshall went to Westpoint Television in London to view the footage.

Mr Henshall used one of his own lenses to create the optical effects seen in the recording "The hairs stood up on the back of my neck," he said. "There it was in full broadcast quality. Amazing."

After his time with Top of the Pops, Mr Henshall went on to film professional music videos for Blondie, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Kate Bush, Spandau Ballet, Roxy Music and Queen.

Among other items recovered and shown at Sunday's event were two missing episodes of Doctor Who, a television play by Dennis Potter called Emergency Ward 9 and a comedy sketch featuring Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

The first transmission of Jean Genie since 1973 will be in a BBC4 documentary, Tales of Television Centre, to be broadcast in the new year.

Beach Boys to reform for anniversary

Founding members line-up a huge tour and new album

The Beach Boys have announced plans to reform for their 50th anniversary.

The founding members - Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and David Marks - are planning a new studio album and a 50-date international tour next April.

No official tour dates have been announced yet but they will appear as one of the headliners at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which takes place from April 27 to May 6, 2012.

The band will also spotlight the band's entire catalog, with several new commemorative releases planned for 2012, including a new hits collection and a career-spanning box set.

Frontman Brian Wilson said of the reunion "This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again".

Love added "We got together at Capitol Records and re-recorded 'Do It Again.' Brian and I wrote that song which went to number 1 in Great Britain, Australia and elsewhere some 44 years ago. Brian paid me a compliment saying, 'How can a guy sound that great so many years later?'

"Later on, while working out some harmonies on a new song Brian had written, I got a chance to return the compliment.

"Music has been the unifying and harmonising fact of life in our family since childhood. It has been a huge blessing that we have been able to share with the world. Wouldn't it be nice to do it again? Absolutely!"

The band first formed in 1961 and enjoyed huge success throughout this period.

Frontman Brian Wilson last performed with The Beach Boys during the making of their 1996 album 'Stars And Stripes Vol.1' and has toured as a solo artist since.

He hinted earlier this year that he wanted to reform with the surviving members. Two former members Dennis and Carl Wilson died in 1983 and 1998

Reg Presley of the Troggs hospitalized

Reg Presley, lead singer of the 60's hitmakers The Troggs, has been hospitalized in Winchester, England for pneumonia, fluid around his heart and a possible stroke.

The 70-year-old is having the fluid drained off from around the heart and is reported to be in poor condition. His wife Brenda told the U.K.'s Daily Mirror that the problems started early in the month. "It started that weekend [December 3] but he was contracted to do [a show] so thought he had better go ahead. He came back and got steadily worse. In the last couple of weeks he has gradually deteriorated ' it is like he has hit a brick wall all of a sudden."

Presley had previously had a stroke last year.

The Troggs were formed in 1964 and had hits with Wild Thing (1966/#1 U.S./#2 U.K.), With a Girl Like You (1966/#29 U.S./#1 U.K.) and Love is All Around (1967/#7 U.S./#5 U.K.) among others.

Presley has continued to perform throughout his life and added expertise in the paranormal and crop circles during the last twenty years.

Rod Stewart\Faces Hall of Fame reunion!

The mod icons will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in April 2012

Rod Stewart has spoken about the chances of reuniting with the Faces following the announcement of their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next year.

Speaking about the induction ceremony, Stewart was asked if he'd consider joining the band for a performance. The band reunited last year to headline the Vintage at Goodwood festival, but with Mick Hucknall on vocals. "Oh, yeah! I'd love it," said Stewart to Rolling Stone. "If they're all available I'll definitely make myself available."

Rod Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 1994, but was unable to attend the ceremony in Cleveland because an earthquake hit Los Angeles and he wanted to stay in the city with his family.

When asked if he minded that the Faces have toured without him, Stewart responded: "No, not at all, mate. It's something that I would want to do, but it's getting a commitment from Ronnie [Wood] – who is hanging onto what the Stones are going to do. He'll suddenly say, "Hey, let's tour next week!" I'll say, "Hold on Ronnie, I've got commitments! I've got commitments for the next year.""

"If we all sat around and said, "Let's do it next summer, or let's do it for charity" or whatever reason, I would do it. It's not totally ruled out," he added.

Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys have also been chosen as the next acts to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. They will be officially inducted at a ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 14, 2012.

Jagger & Richards: tribute to blues artist

Howlin' Wolf guitarist Hubert Sumlin has passed away aged 80

The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger and Keith Richards have paid tribute to blues guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who has passed away aged 80.

The pair paid their respects to Sumlin, who enjoyed a career that spanned 40 years - including nearly two decades playing guitar with the singer Howlin' Wolf and a stint with Muddy Waters - before he died from heart failure earlier this week (December 4).

Richards, who featured on Sumlin's 2004 solo LP 'About Them Shoes', said: "With sorrow I received the news of Hubert's passing. He put up a long hard fight. To me he was an uncle and a teacher, and all the guitar players must feel the same as myself."

He went on to add "Warm, humours and always encouraging, he was a gentleman of the first order. Miss him, yes, but we have his records. All my ondolences to his family".

Jagger, meanwhile, said: "Hubert was an incisive yet delicate blues player. He had a really distinctive and original tone, and was a wonderful foil for Howlin' Wolf's growling vocal style.

"On a song like 'Going Down Slow' he could produce heart rending emotion, and on a piece like 'Wang Dang Doodle', an almost playful femininity. He was an inspiration to us all."

Sumlin, who was nominated for a Grammy award on four separate occasions but never won the prize, was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 2008 and was also included in Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time.

It was recently reported that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were set to discuss plans for the 50th anniversary of the first Rolling Stones gig, which takes place on July 12 2012.

UFO Announces New Album Release Date

Nothing would be easier for British rock legends UFO than to rest on their laurels. The band could easily release the occasional best-of album to earn a few additional royalties and be content with looking back at an exceptionally glorious past. And it certainly wouldn't be a problem for UFO to sell out tours on the strength of its name.

But idleness or indeed a musical standstill have always been out of the question for Phil Mogg, Paul Raymond, Andy Parker, and Vinnie Moore. These in equal measures experienced and ambitious musicians are interested in the present, their love of creativity and the active continuation of their celebrated band history. And now we can look forward to "Seven Deadly," the band's latest studio album which combines present and future with UFO's greatest fortes.
