I used to write Welcome to the Rockgarden, but I packed up and moved. Now I'm at octaviaandvicky.com, which is a space I have designed to share my passion for parenting, teaching, technology, food and enjoying the small things in life. I am wife to Paul and mum to Charlotte, two years old. I am a junior primary teacher. I love to cook and eat, read and write, shop and surf (the net!). I named my blog Octavia and Vicky after a story I wrote when I was five years old.

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheRockGarden" />
<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/" />

Hi there!

I finally did it! I missed you guys. I hope you missed me too. Please visit Octavia and Vicky to see what’s going on.
Without blogging I feel ……lost. I do love blogging, but The Rockgarden and it’s hodge-podge-diary-of-a-mummy style was just not working for me anymore. It took saying goodbye to The Rockgarden for there to be room in my brain for an idea to grow. Over night it has made my brain explode!

I am not saying goodbye to blogging for good. I will be back. I’d love it if you could hang on to this little space, because when I’m back, holding this little baby of an idea, I’ll be so excited to show you. Keep your RSS feed, keep your email subscription, keep your Facebook and Twitter friendships, because I think you’re going to like where I’m going, and you’ll need to be there with me.

For now, I’ll see you around the blogosphere while I keep enjoying visiting you.

Goodbye

We need to talk.

It’s not you it’s me.

It’s over.

I have decided to stop publishing The Rockgarden. <strike>Very shortly it will be closed to the public.
Pebble is still recovering from this looooooong viral visit. I really wish it would just bugger off. This afternoon we got a glimpse of our little girl again, she started singing, dancing, chatting, running around like a mad thing. It was quite a shock actually! A shock to me and then…. .eventually…. to her. Now she has hit a wall, she looks like a zombie again, all red ringed and saggy baggy eyes, and pale blotchy cheeks.

She was diagnosed with Fifth Disease (slap face) on Friday afternoon, and since then the rash has completely disappeared. However the zombie look was constant, along with no appetite, until Sunday afternoon. It was so good to see her enjoy a little meat feast at Grandad David’s BBQ birthday lunch! This morning Paul and I were still very unimpressed with her progress though, and a bit worried about her little pale and tired face. I dragged her to the doctors again (that’s three times in a week, if you’re counting). He was very reassuring, she checked out fine, he said she’s just still recovering from the virus. So, we wait. A few more days he says, and she should be completely healthy again.

Meanwhile, Pebble had her very first dentist appointment today. She was a super star and it was no drama at all. I also had my first dental appointment for about two years….. and boy, do I know about it! I’ve always had healthy teeth, and very little need for attention (except for that whole ‘braces’ thing in my teens). This time it seems I’ve pushed things too far and I’m paying the price – I actually can’t even tell you how many fillings I need and what kind they are, I literally lost count. She said I could have two appointments or four to get the work done. I opted to get it over and done with, so two it is. Just before Christmas. Shout out to SkyBeeJazz, wishing you and the kiddies well soon xx

To make the most of an evening at home I thought I’d get a little bit fancy, but still keep it pretty simple and relaxed, with some homemade pizzas. Pebble joined in, making her own tomato, cheese and ham pizza. She was so excited to “make it! make it!”. While trying to eat it she kept talking about how she made it herself, she was so proud. Unfortunately the pita bread was a little chewy for her. I managed to cook it perfectly for toddler mouths, just warm enough to melt the cheese, not crunchy or hard, but it was still a bit too hard to manage. I was thinking of trying an English muffin next, or just plain bread. I would feel more confident about those ideas if Pebble actually ate regular toast, but she doesn’t. Weetbix all the way for this kid. Needless to say we will be doing more cooking together when we can in the future, it definitely helps to have Daddy around to help out too.

Our adult pizzas looked a little different to the kiddy version. I tried a recipe for prawn, zucchini, feta and pesto pizzas and O.M.G! They were SO good. Light, fresh, tasty, just beautiful. I will definitely make them again…. just not often. The whole last minute chopping/assembling/oven hovering is just not my day to day cooking style. Not to mention the overall cost of it all. These days I look for recipes that are quick, easy, budget friendly, freezer friendly and child friendly. This recipe was none of those things, but it was perfect for a Saturday night stay at home treat. It was gorgeous with an asparagus, tomato and balsamic salad. Yesterday afternoon Pebble came up with a rash (déjà vu). She’s been a little more clingy, and a little less into food, but other wise ok. The doc says it’s a viral rash, and there’s not much we can do. One of her ears is slighty red and fluidy too, and she’s been grabbing at the other one (strange enough) today. We’ll see what tomorrow brings, and we’re booked in for a follow up docs appointment in the arvo.

Of course, this means no child care, so it has been Super Gran and Super Dad to the rescue this week. Grandma looked after Pebble on Wednesday, as usual, then they both took care of her Wednesday night while I was at a Dyslexia information night (two students diagnosed last term), Paul had today off work with her, and tonight he played super daddy again while I went to a loooooooong awaited hair appointment. Bless their cotton socks, I don’t know where I’d be without them both. I am a lucky mummy. You can count this as this week’s grateful!

I’m coming off the back of two long days at work and two busy nights, with Sports Day to look forward to tomorrow, so I’m taking myself to bed very shortly. Go Kookaburras!

Water + Paint Brush + Warm Weather = Toddler Fun!

It was early on Sunday morning and Pebble as keen to get outside with Daddy, who was getting ready for some hard work. The weather was just warming up, slowly making it’s way to a top of 31 degrees. As you can see, it was perfect weather for party shoes and that ever present tutu! I just shrug my shoulders and say, sure kid, knock yourself out! If wearing a tutu keeps her happy, then I’m happy.

We used a teeny tiny bucket of water to paint stripes, spots, and shapes, then to make little “puddles” for jumping in. Then Pebble discovered the nearby garden bed filled with wonderful, filthy dirt! She dipped the wet brush into the dirt and was amazed to see the dirt stuck to the brush. Daddy suggested that she rinse the brush in the bucket….. she was delighted to see the dirt wash away and that became the game for the next few moments.

More fun was found in rinsing out the dirty water and replacing it with clean water. I tipped the dirty water into the edge of the garden, where Pebble found another muddy puddle to poke the brush, as well as a down pipe to explore.

These are the corners of our garden that I never pay attention to. I would never have noticed that perfect little spot, right on the edge of the lawn, that was just waiting to be made into a muddy puddle. In fact, I had never noticed that the down pipe was chipped … how did that happen?

Thank you Pebble, for opening my eyes up to a whole new world, right outside our back door.

You can join in with Point + Shoot at Lou’s place.

Oooh, that’s pinteresting….Party Dresses

The party season is nearly upon us and I am keeping my eyes open for something gorgeous. I have no idea what I’ll actually like until I try a few things on. I am loving some floaty summer beauty, but also get caught up in the idea of something more structured or modern. They may not turn out to be a winner for me in reality, but here’s some lovelies that caught my eye.

<img style="display: block; She’s only just started to occasionnally use three word sentences instead of always two word sentences, and she communicates so much with those few words – not to mention the emphatic gestures and intonation. For example:“GO ‘WAY MUMMY” (grand sweeping arm movements). Just lovely. Or: “want to, want to” (with a big sulky frown, and which actually means ‘I don’t want to’).

Tonight at dinner, however, I got some much friendlier conversation.

Me: Who did you play with at Toddler House today?
Pebble: Um, Ayex (Alex, primary carer)
M: Who else?
P: Nona (Fiona, primary carer)
M: Anyone else?
P: Um. Kids.
M: Can you tell me the kids names?/
P: Ummmmm. Yockie (Lockie – I assume!).
M: Did you play in the sandpit today?
P: (nods) dig, dig (digging motion)
M: Who played in the sandpit?
P: Ayex
M: Did you do some painting today?
P: (nods)
M: What did you paint?
P: Boo (blue)
M: Blue? That sounds nice.
P: (thinks for a minute) Red!
M: Red too?
P: pink!
M: What did you have for lunch today?
P: Soup. Dink It.
M: What else?
P: Bed (bread). Sweep (sleep).
M: Did you sleep at Toddler House?
P: (nods and makes snoring sounds).

This whole exchange was relaxed and chatty, while we ate our dinner and hung out. We often have little chats but this time it really felt like she understood everything I was saying. Usually she understands a little bit, and then we get something lost in translation and she’ll start talking about something totally random. I’m going to lap every little bit of this up before she starts answering these daily questions with “nothing” and “dunno”.

What’s the dinner table conversation like at your place?

Pebble – 21 months

Dear Pebble

Twenty one months! You are nearly two, but it seems like you’re really two already. You are so independent, so VERY independent. Everything is “me do”, “me turn”. And you can do nearly everything yourself (as long as mummy is patient). Here are some of the things that you’re doing and loving and saying these days:

You love:

dancing and wearing your dancing skirt

drawing

playing with “bes fens” (best friends)

hide and seek (still!)

taking baths with your toys

playing “oside” (outside)

going to the park

play dough

playing at your grandparents houses

shopping!

reading books with mummy and daddy

sleeping with your big teddy, little teddy AND baby

eating pasta, rice, cheese, peas and grapes (some things never change)

to have control over everything, all the time

cuddles in bed with mummy and daddy

playing “etend” (pretend - shopping, eating, driving, mummies and babies)

help mummy do jobs around the house (dust, pack up toys, refill the toilet paper holder, hang out washing, put your dishes in the sink, put your rubbish in the bin)

kicking a ball

Peppa Pig. LOTS of Peppa Pig

You don’t like

being told what to do

getting into or out of the bath. the middle bit is fun

putting your head under the water in swimming lessons

having your nappy changed (since birth!)

getting dressed (unless it’s in a “serk” (skirt)

big groups of people. It takes you a while to warm up

You have learned to:

sit still while you have your hair washed (YAY!)

count to ten with help from mum or dad

say almost any word that you want

say your favourite words much more clearly

say three words in a sentence

climb almost anything

brush you teeth pretty well by yourself

climb into your car seat on your own

sing lots of nursery rhymes

do all the actions to Justine Clarke’s ‘Dancing Face’

try lots of new foods, even if you decide that you don’t like them

do a ‘fluff’ on demand whenever you hear anyone else do one (not Mummy, of course)

sleep in your own big bed through the night sometimes

take off your own clothes

say please nearly every time when you ask for something

You are an absolute pleasure, we laugh and learn with you every day.
I was about to write “I’m tired”. But I’m not tired. My eyes are hanging out my head, my brain is buzzing faster than I can keep up, I’m raring to go but not sure where to start. I have so many ideas right now and I can’t seem to pin them all down. Here’s a few things that are kicking around in my head, I gotta get them out some how:

Pebble’s second birthday

teaching 6-8 year olds about the interconnectedness of countries. OMG.

CHRISTMAS

calling {insert loved ones names here} and catching up

the meal planning and cooking merry go round

crafty projects for the home – blank walls be gone!

the amount of dishes one small toddler makes in one day.

how do I get flv files to burn and play in a DVD player? anyone?

house work. never ending housework. poorly achieved housework.

ideas for the garden that I constantly neglect

making a family poster for Pebble’s child care. only six months behind on that one.

the overstuffed calendar for this weekend, week, month. how did that happen? my fault.

the pile of teaching text books glaring at me every day.

family personal history project… still a little seed of an idea, not quite flourishing yet

half read library books with return dates are creeping on up

the gym, must get to the gym. more.

how am I going to store and display Pebble’s art?

pinterest. I’m pinning stuff in my sleep!

Sports Day. Must get organised for Sports Day.

sorting out my teaching resources. that’s a BIG job. for later.

cleaning out Pebble’s wardrobe and storing the too small bits and pieces. Aw.

budget. ignoring it. ignoring the fact that we don’t HAVE budget.

my phone plan. what’s going on with that?

computer nearly dead. need to back up and send it off to the doctors.

dentist appointment coming up. FLOSS.

hair. to go shorter again, or grow it longer?

TV to catch up on. Ha!

The stuff that I’ve forgotten for this list that will wake me at 2am and send me into a panic.

paying more attention to inspiring quotes.

Goodnight.
I’m a bit late, but I’m here, pointing and shooting! It has been a fun weekend for us. Saturday saw Pebble and I pottering about doing a bit this and a bit of that while Paul helped his brother with some of the last few jobs before he moves interstate. I kept our day low key because it was DATE NIGHT for Paul and I on Saturday night, and I wanted to make sure that Pebble was nice and relaxed, and not too tired (but tired enough, you know?). We had a little excursion to the shops to buy her cousin a birthday present, and that’s about it.

Saturday afternoon we dropped Pebble off at Grandma’s and returned home to chillax with some tunes, some conversation (without interruptions!!!) and a little drink. We were supposed to use our much anticipated Gold Class voucher but ALL the shite movies sold out. I couldn’t believe it! Literally every session was sold out. We were kind of ok with that because there really wasn’t anything on that we desperately wanted to see. There looks to be some good stuff coming up in the next few weeks, so we’ll pop out for a mid-week session then. Mid-week date night! Woo hoo!

We decided to hit up our local pub, which we used to frequent quite a bit more often in the old days. It was SO GOOD to just sit together, chat, laugh, drink, people watch, chat some more. Oh, how I laughed! We really don’t have many relaxed conversations these days. We’re both busy with the (adorable) kid and then any chit chat after her bed time is all business stuff, catching up the mundane communication of this thing we call life. We so very rarely just hang out together, just the two of us. I loved it.

Not to mention the ability to blast music at all hours, stomp around the house and collapse into sleep knowing that I won’t be woken up by a little voice calling “mummy”. I love being mummy, but a break like this is so very appreciated. Thank you Grandma!

Sunday we went to our nephew’s 1st birthday party, a very cute outdoor affair with a jungle theme. We had an easy afternoon of catching up with family and chasing the (many, many!) littlies around the playground. We got home late on Sunday arvo and somehow, before we knew it, the day was done. Goodbye weekend, see you again soon (but not soon enough).

See what other’s are Pointing and Shooting this week at Lou’s place.

Two minute hair style

Shout out to Hair Romance which I stumbled upon via Styling You….. I’m loving these little pieces of styling heaven!* They have helped me feel less like a frumpy mama and more like…. me! The old me, that used to do more than finger comb her hair or shove it in a pony tail. Who used to choose an outfit and use accessories, and not just throw on the same old tired trackies. Who used to actually look in the mirror before leaving the house! The old faithful trackies are still getting plenty of use, but I find myself putting in a little more effort when we go somewhere other than the supermarket (imagine that!).

~image~

I found this cute two minute hair style at Hair Romance and decided to give it a shot. It was SO easy! I started with barely-damp, scrunch dried, wavy hair when I styled mine, which gave it a messier look that I love. I think the final ‘do looks more defined on blonde hair, but I loved it on my darker locks too (p.s. it’s super tricky to take a photo of the back of your own head!).

It’s date night tonight – I think our second night out alone this year! That’s why I was delighted when I was gifted this little notebook from my ….. oooh, let me think, complicated family…. step-cousin? Yep, I think that’s right. Whatever the correct title is, this gorgeous woman did a very generous and thoughtful thing when she gave all the women in the extended family their own little gift.

There is a different prompt on each page for the first half of the book. The second half is left blank for you to record your own stories. I love, love, love this idea, and have been thinking about how I can extend it out to the men too. I’d really like to collect the answers to these questions from Paul for Pebble, and from my own Dad for his children and grand children. Then there’s all our other-side-of-the-family people – our family is huge! So many people and so many stories to collect.

A project like this feels especially relevant today, when I received some sad news about one of my extended family members. It reminded me that the time that we have with each other is so short.

Do you collect stories for your family? How do you do it?

How did I get here?

Yesterday I had a few little jobs to do – quick grocery shop, make dinner, tidy the house, take care of the kid. No big deal. In between throwing loads of washing in and out of the machine I whisked Pebble off to the supermarket to get the ingredients for dinner. She insisted on wearing her ‘dancing skirt’ over the top of her trackies, as she does almost every day lately. I couldn’t be bothered getting dressed properly myself, and chose to go out in my mummy uniform of charcoal work out pants (I don’t even know what to call these – trackies meet yoga pants and have a baby), an old, super faded t-shirt with a few holes in it (no bra – gasp!), and my black hoodie that was NOT coming off under any circumstances.

Of course this would be the day that:

a) I bump into one of the parents and a student from my class. A gorgeous family, honestly, they are such treasures. I just wished I was wearing a bra.

b) Pebble wets her pants – the nappy was dry, it was bizarre!

c) I don’t bring a change of clothes out with us.

d) I don’t pack a snack (she’s an EATING MACHINE right now!).

So there where are, in the car park at Woolies with my kid in a tutu and sneakers, stuffing her face with a bread roll. She was having a lovely time. Sometimes you just have to laugh at life. Then other times you just have to learn how to prepare to leave the house with a toddler. For heaven’s sake woman, have you learned nothing in the last 20 months?

That’s why I write this blog – so I don’t forget moments like these. I can’t let Paul and Grandma go hungry, so I whipped up a quick quiche that they can have with salad for dinner.

I’m not quite sure where I originally got the recipe for this quiche but I do know that I don’t have to look it up ever. It is so simple and easy to do, and so tasty!

Quiche ala Rockgarden

6 eggs, beaten
6 rashers bacon, rind and fat removed, diced
1/2 brown onion, diced (or cheat and use chopped frozen onion, I do!)
grated cheese ~ about half a cup? Maybe 3/4*
300ml cream*
300ml milk*
1 sheet of ready made shortcrust pastry, defrosted*

*I use the low fat version for all of these ingredients. It makes no difference to the taste, I promise!

Preheat oven to 200 celcius.

Spray a pie dish (or you could use a square baking dish, I do this occassionally too) with oil.

Roll out the pastry until it is large enough to fit your dish, then lay it in the dish, pushing it into the corners. Cut off any loose edges (and use those bits to fill any holes – hey, nobody is perfect!).

Put a sheet of baking paper on top of the pastry and fill the pie dish with dried beans (I have had the same dried beans for this job for years. I’m rather fond of them now. That’s probably weird, right?). Bake the pastry for about 10 or 15 minutes, then remove from the oven. Remove the paper and save your beans for next time (careful, they’re hot).

Meanwhile, fry the onion and bacon in a non-stick frying pan until just lightly golden.
While you’re doing that, (such the multi-tasker!) whisk the eggs together with the cream, milk, and cheese.

Add the cooked bacon and onion to the filling mixture then pour the lot into the lightly baked pie dish. Cook for a further 40 minutes, or until the quiche is slightly puffy and golden. There should be no wobbly filling.

This is delicious hot, warm or cold, is great for lunches, AND travels and freezes well.

Dinner is done, dude!
Everything was just a little bit too hard for her. The doll house made her cry. The train set made her cry. Everything was frustrating and she was irritable. I looked around at the dishes and chores to be done, then at the whingey toddler and decided that’s it! We’re getting out of this house!!

I asked Pebble if she’d like to go to the park and, like sunshine breaking after the storm, she smiled. Safe in the knowledge that she would be hitting the swings in no time I got to have a peaceful shower and quickly throw together the nappy bag.

First we hit up the park, where Pebble played with a boy a little older than her, joining in his game of selling ‘lamingtons and lattes’ at the little play bench. Then swishing bark all over the place. Then piling bark back up again. We did the see saw, little slide, big slide, balancing beam, climbing wall and then did it all again. And again. “Fun, mummy!”

From there we popped in to Coles for some essentials. It’s amazing how much a few essentials can add up to these days! I still haven’t planned this weeks meals (tsk tsk) and I walked out of there over $100 lighter in the pocket.

Then it was off to the library. Pebble’s favourite thing in the library is the little train that she gets to climb into. Except that today the train was gone. So she picked her second favourite thing, the abacus and bead puzzles. “Beads, mummy! Look mummy! Beads look!”.

I picked up a huge pile of books for Pebble and a couple of novels plus a couple of audio books for me. Now I just have to find time to read them! Pebble fell asleep in the car on the way home (perfect timing, just call me super mum) and I popped her into bed where she stayed for two hours! I got to wash the dishes, tidy the house and catch up on some telly. LOVE school holidays.

Pebble woke up, had a cuddle and a snack and I had the urge to move again. I don’t know about you but sometimes the hardest part of going out is getting ready. I was already dressed and ready to go, and the nappy bag was packed so there was nothing to stop us. I had in mind some bits and pieces to add the finishing touches to Pebble’s room, so we ducked off to Westfield. Lucky for Pebble there was a free kids disco and she got to get her groove on. She loved it! I picked up about ten items and walked out with a cute little cardi and striped top for under $20. Then I had the shopping bug. I snuck into a few more shops and picked up some el cheapo accessories to brighten up my spring wardrobe. I would love to splurge on more clothes but this will have to do. For now.

I did get side-tracked by Temt and this striped maxi dress. I loved it on the rack, but it looked awful on. I take it that Pebble was expressing her opinion too. She picked a winner! \

We also stopped in at the new (freakin awesome!) Cotton On shop that’s recently opened up. I wasn’t going to go in but Pebble demanded it. Seriously! She stopped and said “Mummy, in! In!”. Then she proceeded to grab necklaces, bracelets, scarves, sunglasses and everything else pretty, then hide under the various unique displays. We bid adieu to that little nightmare (with a cute bright pink scarf for $5, whoops) and we slowly made our way out of the Westfield maze, via the usual treats of course … Wiggles car, Play school ride, pet shop, mezzanine view.

And finally made it home. Our little day out kinda turned into a big day out but I think we both enjoyed our adventure.

Have you had a Little Day Out lately? That’s Grandad and Nana ‘Nette to you. Her cousins invited her to play Hide and Seek. It’s her favourite game. Still, she needed a little persuading. The poor kid was in a mood, perhaps just tired, maybe teeth, maybe she had her period. Who knows? Still, she joined in eventually. It was her turn to hide. The cousins counted as she dashed inside and found her hiding place. Are you ready? Here it is:

I love how pleased with herself she looks.

Just to be clear, we were all outside in the courtyard, where the cousins were counting. Pebble was hiding behind the screen door. The glass screen door. Which is made of GLASS.

Her eldest cousin, age 6, was so perplexed by this hiding spot that he walked right up to her, stared at her, then walked away. This only made Pebble grin wider, as she thought she’d found the BEST hiding spot EVER! She was invisible!

I’m playing Point + Shoot with Sunny + Scout. Make sure you go and see what others are Pointing + Shooting too. Lou has an AMAZING peacock photo this week. Such a clever lady.

Sunday Sessions

It’s Sunday night, I’ve just fought with a cheeky toddler to get her to sleep, all after a WEIRD day of behaviour from her. That’s another story that I may or may not get to another time. Right now I want to SING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS.

This is something from WAY back when. Because that’s really the only music I know. I’m SO out of touch with music these days. So old. *sigh*. Anyhoo. Sing it and sing it loud.

Brought to you by Do I Really Wanna Blog?
