Sen. Kennedy Warms Up for the Figawi

(NECN: Hyannisport, Mass.) - It was a day at the shore designed to send a message. Ted Kennedy has no plans to slow down. Senator Kennedy and his wife, Vicki, went sailing Wednesday afternoon, just one day after it was announced that he has a brain tumor. On a picture perfect day for a sail, Kennedy took his Portugese water dogs for a swim, and then climbed aboard for a sail aboard his boat 'Mya'.

After the sail, Kennedy summed up his health with a one word answer. "Good." He's told family members he's planning to race this weekend in the Figawi, an annual regatta between Hyannis and Nantucket.

Cruising with Bettie Trailer: L.A. to the Bahamas

TheSailingChannel presents a slice of the cruising lifestyle. Have you ever dreamt of "sailing off into the sunset?" Then join Bob and Kaye aboard their 36 foot sloop, "Bettie" as they cruise from Los Angeles to the Bahamas via the Panama Canal on the first leg of their sailing adventure

"Bettie" is based on a Cascade 36 hull. It was custom molded for Bob by Yacht Constructors in Portland Oregon back in 1978. Four years and lots and lots of man hours later Bob splashed her. "Bettie" has a raised freeboard that allows for a flush deck design.

Next, Bob and Kaye cruised north along the eastern U.S. seaboard to Boston. The geese were flying south by October beckoning them back to warmer climes, so they headed south to Guatemala and Honduras. After refitting and some time back in L.A., Bob and Kaye sailed back across the Caribbean to the Florida Keys. TheSailingChannel is partnering with Bob and Kaye to produce a continuing series of cruising documentaries as we follow "Bettie" to the far corners of the world.

Bob Steadman is a highly acclaimed Hollywood cinematographer. He recently served as technical consultant to the Director of Photography on the feature, Body of Lies directed by Ridley Scott and starring Leonardo de Caprio and Russell Crowe. Shot in 16-mm film with sync sound, Jean-du-Sud puts you in the cockpit: Yves speaks as he would to a fellow crew member. Unless you do it yourself, this is as close as you'll ever get to a solo circumnavigation. In attempting to sail non–stop between Saint-Malo, France and Gaspé, QC, Canada through the Roaring Forties and around Cape Horn alone aboard his boat, Jean-du-Sud, Canadian Yves Gélinas added his personal share to the art of sailing a small boat around the world. Besides the voyage, his accomplishments included the design of a system to self-steer his boat, the writing of a book to document the voyage, and the shooting of a 16 mm film while sailing. Even though Yves was unable to complete the circumnavigation non-stop, Jean-du-Sud was the smallest boat up to that time to sail that route. In acknowledgement, the Joshua Slocum Society International bestowed on Gélinas the Golden Circle Award.
