Be a part of the Great Monterey Clam Chowder & Calamari Festival and help benefit The Salvation Army of the Monterey Peninsula. Proceeds from this exciting event will help fund our program and the volunteers will also receive a T-Shirt.

Date:  May 26-28 (Memorial Day Weekend)
Location:  Custom House Plaza at Fisherman’s Wharf
Time Frame:  Shifts are between 10:30 am to 7:00 pm

Volunteers are needed to assist with the following:

• Cooking Demonstration Assistant
• Carnival Games Operator
• Food Service
• Maintenance
• Runners

Monterey residents be ready!  Saturday, May 12th will be the National Association of Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. If you live in the city of Monterey, non-perishable food donations that you put out with your mail will come to The Salvation Army Monterey Peninsula Corps to support families right here on the peninsula. You may have already received a bag with The Salvation Army Red Shield logo on it. Simply put your food donations into the bag and put out by your mailbox. Your letter carrier will make sure the food gets delivered to us! If you didn’t receive a bag from the Post Office, that’s okay too. Just put your food donations in any bag and put out by your mailbox.

Don’t live in the city of Monterey? No problem. Each post office has decided where the food will goes. Most of the other local post offices are sending their food to the Food Bank of Monterey County that is located in Salinas. Either way, local families will still get the food they need.

What if Saturday doesn’t work for you or you want your food donations to come to The Salvation Army even if you don’t live in Monterey? That’s okay too. We always accept donations of non-perishable food items year round. You can drop off food donations to us directly at our Good Samaritan Center, located at 800 Scott Street in Sand City, between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. We are closed for lunch from 12:00pm–1:00pm.

The Salvation Army Disaster Services has began providing disaster relief following a string of tornadoes in the Midwest this week. With even more expected Friday, The Salvation Army is not only providing relief to those areas already by the storms, but also have teams on standby to help who may still be affected.

Alexandria, Virginia (March 1, 2012) – The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) teams are providing food, beverage and spiritual support to survivors and first responders in impacted areas following the severe weather and tornadoes that passed through the Midwest on February 29. In addition to providing hands-on relief for communities in need, the EDS teams are collaborating with Emergency Management groups at the local, county and state levels to help.

Following the tornadoes and severe weather, which are responsible for the deaths of at least 12 people, The Salvation Army activated their EDS response teams and equipment in five states, including Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois and Tennessee. The Army’s response units are operating in some of the hardest-hit areas:

· Harveyville, KS: A team of EDS volunteers from Topeka provided drinks, meals and snacks to more than 300 people on Wednesday, including first responders, survivors and clean-up crews, through a mobile feeding kitchen. The Salvation Army will continue mass feeding operations as clean-up efforts begin in earnest, and it is also providing emotional and spiritual care services to those in need.

· Branson, MO: A Salvation Army canteen is providing meals, snacks and drinks to first responders, survivors and clean-up crews, along with emotional and spiritual care to anyone in need. The Salvation Army will continue to collaborate with other area organizations and government agencies as the response efforts continue.

· Kimberling City, MO: A Salvation Army canteen and team are providing meals, snacks and drinks as well as emotional and spiritual care to community members in need.

· Harrisburg, IL: Two Salvation Army canteens are in the area to assist. One canteen is set up at the Walmart located on 710 S. Commercial.

· Cumberland County, TN: A canteen and trained crew of volunteers are on site to serve survivors and first responders in the area with meals, snacks and beverages.
Mobile feeding units in Louisville, Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville are also on stand-by and ready to respond if needed; these units are able to provide thousands of meals per day. Additionally, response personnel are standing by in Richmond and Bardstown, Kentucky.

OVERVIEW:

The Good Samaritan Center Director is responsible for maintaining and administering the program according to the national social service standards, leading staff through the social service review process, submitting necessary documentation, and following up with the required action plan. The Director will oversee the Spiritual wellbeing of the center, staff and its ministry to those coming in for assistance! In the chaplain’s absence, the Director will provide spiritual counseling and daily devotions.

The Director will also promote The Salvation Army’s work in the community; develop outside relationships and network with other service agencies which will help in supporting this program and those whom we serve.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work with a minimum of 5 years’ experience or an equivalent level of education, with 2 years of administration and supervisory work experience.
2. Understand the purposes of the Good Samaritan Center
3. Be able to work within the guidelines of the International Mission Statement of The Salvation Army.
4. Have an earnest desire to alleviate the difficulties of people in need.
5. Be able to communicate with demanding and difficult individuals.
6. Be able to supervise and work with people from differing socio-economic backgrounds.
7. Have sufficient computer knowledge to be able to supervise the record keeping and management systems of the center.
8. Understand criminal and substance abuse tendencies in certain clients, which may lead them toward dangerous and damaging conduct.
9. Have experience in grant writing, government contracts and working with funders.
10. Possess a valid California Driver’s License
11. Possess a strong Christian Faith and practice, respecting and following the Army’s doctrines, principles and mission.
12. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, but not required.
