The Return of Layaway

Layaway may sound like an old-school concept, especially in today’s “buy now, pay later” society. But the idea of setting aside products to pay off gradually is making a comeback, and is being praised as a way to regain control of family finances and make sure holiday giving doesn’t fall victim to the economic downturn.

Most people will continue to use credit cards, or, if they have it, pay cash for holiday purchases and other things they need or want. However, for people who can’t afford to pay all at once or anyone who simply wants to avoid using credit cards or keep purchases away from curious present-seekers during the Christmas season, layaway may be the answer.

Stores such as Kmart, Burlington Coat Factory and TJ Maxx cater to this need by offering layaway, even as retail giant Walmart did away with the service years ago.

By paying incrementally, shoppers may be able to afford a higher-quality product, or obtain gifts, furniture, appliances, jewelry and more in a fiscally responsible way. It’s also a relief to finally have the item in-hand without credit card debt hanging over your head.

While some (including spokespeople for the National Retail Association) have referred to layaway as “obsolete,” anecdotal evidence indicates growing interest in layaway as consumers and retailers struggle to adjust to a changing economy.

But layaway is such a hot topic lately that even the 99 Cents Only store chain has announced its own tongue-in-cheek layaway plan.

The layaway concept dates to the Great Depression, when merchants gave people a chance to obtain items they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to afford. It was a win-win, as in most cases the stores wouldn’t have been able to sell to that customer without it. (As recently as the 1980s, some experts observe, only upper-income people had credit cards.) The U.S. Commerce Department’s report that retail sales were down by more than 1 percent in 2008, so layaway may be a way for retailers to reach a market that otherwise would not have shopped at their stores.

RANDOM SAMPLE THOUGHTS

I do know that the best form of a compliment is when someone likes your idea so much that it's replicated over and over again. Such is the case with The Sample Bag.

When TSB was first created the idea of having beautifully designed sample bags arrive at ones door with tons of goodies in a bag combined with a representative/sponsor program was a fabulous idea and creation, in fact it was just THAT good, that throughout the past 1.5 years, and recently I've seen dozens and dozens of sites replicating this idea. All of us have the right to do what we want to more or less on the Net within reason of course, and just like any other retail store, be it clothing, sneakers, candles, etc., there are many amongst us. However, the question is how many can possibly do the same thing without being totally saturated? So now we have the supply/demand issue. Too much supply less and less demand for all involved. Look at the candle industry. I love candles, but when you have 10,000 candle companies, or distributors, after a while you won't find too many to sell to, because they all already have candles from umpteen places and then some.

However, I will say one thing, if anyone thinks that it's easy to run something like this, they are dead wrong. It takes an enormous amount of persistence, creativity, and work to get this type of business to where it needs to be. It is by all means not an easy business, but it IS great fun for those who receive bags and boxes full of surprises!

How much can you really say about samples, whether they come to you in a bag; in a box; in an organza bag or otherwise? lol The concept no matter which way you turn it will always be the same.

The only thing that I can personally say is that TSB is the original since 2007. Original meaning, TSB first came up with the bags and then the representative/sponsor program mix that enables one to earn from selling our items. Since that time I've seen names pop out of the wood works calling it everything similar including our own Yahoo group name. lol Interesting dilemma I say, it's a pity that we can not patent an Idea. lol This in fact brings me to another point. What ever happened to copyright laws? Isn't it law that content on a site can not be copied? So we have a copyright symbol on our sites, and some other verbiage. Uh so?

Honestly I don't mind that this idea was copied only because TSB has opened the doors to a NEW sample revolution, if you will. lol It really does not matter what the samples are packaged in, or how words can be turned around to sound differently, the simple truth is it is meant to help businesses and individuals alike advertise and market their items, products and services, but hey if it helps businesses, and it is not ruined by inadequate customer service or other services as a whole then go for it! Bags, boxes, or sacks en-laced with diamonds, matters none....what matters is getting YOUR BUSINESSES out there, known, heard of and getting more sales!

These are just some random thoughts that I wonder about from time-to-time, and I thought I'd share them with you. So what's your take on it? We'd like to know!

WHAT IS AN E-TAILER?

Simply put an e-Tailer is any business, home-business, services-business, etc. that would like the chance to be in our bags and other items. An e-Tailer is not a sponsor or representative of The Sample Bag, nor will any commissions be paid out to e-Tailers.

An E-tailer can send in as many, or as little samples as they would like to at any time. Naturally the more that they send in the more bags they will be in. The only information requested is an e-Tailers name, company name, and description so that they can be on this e-Tailer page. Thus, it showcases who the e-Tailers are along with their business information. There is no fee associated with becoming an e-Tailer as well, anyone is free to send in samples to us. The only thing that we do require is that an E-Tailer grab a banner to place on their sites, or to place our link in their signature tag if they do not have their own Web Sites.

Link, name, description and banner will be placed on the e-Tailer page for a period of one month, in the month that they send in their samples to us. Example: If we receive an e-Tailers samples on September 15, they will be listed until October 15 and so on. This is completely free advertising for an e-Tailer along with being in our bags!

All Samples should be prepackaged in an appealing way, such as cello bags, with business cards attached. If you do not have tangible samples, gift certificates/coupons are welcome as anyone can use these for extra savings, but tangible items are preferred.

stores are tempting shoppers with samples

Dee D’Amico, 70, paid her bill, picked up her bag, proceeded to the exit, halted and eyed the food samples as if she were on a mission.

She bypassed the rosemary-infused extra virgin olive oil and crackers in favor of a cube of Bavarian smoked cheese on the tip of a toothpick.

But she did not eat it.

“It’s for my little dog, Sassy. I shop here often and always on my way out I check the sample table to see if there’s something for Sassy,” said D’Amico, whose 8-year-old miniature American Eskimo always waits in the car while she makes her weekly visit to Lotsa Pasta in St. Matthews.

“She’ll be very disappointed if she doesn’t have something for the drive home.”

Customers, too, would be disappointed if Lotsa Pasta, Whole Foods Market, Heitzman Bakery, Baskin-Robbins and other places noted for their modest-to-lavish complimentary offerings folded up their sample tables.

During these recessionary times, a free nibble is a nice touch, designed to put shoppers in a good mood and inspire them to purchase the sampled item if they like it.

On that recent day, Sassy missed out on other Lotsa Pasta samples, including salsa, sun-dried tomato-cheddar spread, tortilla chips and Breton mini crackers.

For an edible treasure hunt, just walk through the aisles of Whole Foods on Shelbyville Road. The produce section entices with crudités (including broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery and white asparagus) waiting to be dipped in a Dijon wasabi sauce.

At the seafood counter, hunger pangs can be assuaged from succulent samples of lobster chowder, seafood gumbo and Maryland-style crab soup.

As you continue grazing, er, shopping, you’ll encounter smoked salmon spread, New York flat bread with pepper jack cream cheese, New Zealand cheddar and smoked mozzarella pasta salad.

Shopper/sampler Sarah Gray, a real-estate agent from Crescent Hill, is a big fan of Whole Foods’ samples.

“I think samples work. They generate business. If I try something and like it, I’ll generally buy it — particularly because I would feel guilty trying all these samples and not buying at least one,” said Gray, 44, who frequents Whole Foods every other week.

Whole Foods marketing specialist Tim Roethgen acknowledged that “These are challenging times for everyone and samples in our store are more important than ever … sampling is part of our culture, and our team members love to share delicious food and customers enjoy the fun interaction.”

At Liquor Barn’s Springhurst location people ages 21 and older can sip free wine samples from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturdays in the new Tasting Bar.

Recently, those of age could try Cape Diamond merlot, Graham Beck sauvignon blanc and Jim Beam Black Label (straight or on the rocks with Coke) while customers of all ages filled up on Mountain Gorgonzola from Italy, guacamole dip and slices of Blue Dog Bakery baguettes.

The store’s olive bar is always equipped with toothpicks, encouraging customers to try green olives with Sicilian herbs, Lombardo peppers with garlic cloves, onion-stuffed jumbo green olives and a Greek olive mix.

“For many customers, this is their place to stop by for an appetizer on their way home,” said manager Kim Strange.

Scott Buckingham, a general contractor from Prospect, shops at Liquor Barn twice a week and said he enjoys hanging out for a while at the Tasting Bar.

“You really learn a lot through this adventure of tasting. Yes, there’s the money-saving factor (free samples) but it’s exciting for me to try different items from around the world that I would otherwise not taste,” said Buckingham, 56, who had high praise for the Port Salut semi-soft cheese sample from France.

Valu Market at Iroquois Manor Shopping Center, located in an ethnically diverse neighborhood in south Louisville, sells a variety of foods with an accent on Cuban, Bosnian, African, Jamaican and Asian cultures.

“It’s important to offer samples to get our customers open to new flavors and experiences when it comes to food,” said grocery manager Bill Boberg, who added that the store’s Cuban sandwich (marinated roast pork, Swiss cheese and ham) is the most sampled item.

Fried plantains, potato balls and ham croquettes also are popular, he said.

Simple sample strategies

Even if sample tables aren’t set up during your grocery shopping excursion store personnel are generally amenable to offer a sample upon request. For example, if you’re curious about the mesquite-smoked turkey breast in the Kroger deli just ask for a slice.

Dozens of other places in Kentuckiana routinely tempt shoppers with free food morsels.

Among them are Costco, Sam’s Club, ice cream parlors (including Graeter’s, Baskin-Robbins, Cold Stone Creamery and Bruster’s), most bakeries, Paul’s Fruit Markets, Williams-Sonoma and all the major grocery chains.
