Como llevo toda la vida metida en el ambiente académico, para mí los años van de septiembre en septiembre. Bueno, desde que vivo en USA es más bien de agosto en agosto, pero lo que vengo a decir es que cuando me escuchéis decir cosas como “el año pasado…”, sabed que me estoy refiriendo al año académico, y no al del calendario del común de los mortales. Dicho esto, ¡feliz “año” nuevo a todos!

Ha sido un verano intenso. Como siempre, se me ha hecho demasiado corto y casi no me creo que ya estemos en septiembre, pero así es… Desde que vivo en USA, lo que para mí cuenta como verano es el tiempo que paso en España. Este año, como sólo pude estar un mes, pues mi verano ha durado un mes. Lo que vino después es simplemente igual que resto del año: trabajo, pero con más calor, y por esta zona, con más tormentas. Cada “vuelta al cole” viene con una serie de constantes inalterables: “este año me voy a organizar bien desde el principio”, “qué de gente… cada vez tenemos más estudiantes”, “yo no sé si voy a poder hacer todo esto para la fecha límite”… y un largo etcétera. Nos decimos estas cosas cada año, olvidando que el anterior dijimos lo mismo, y el anterior a ése, y el otro… Sí, nos vamos a organizar mejor, pero siempre va a depender de las otras 200 cosas que estamos haciendo al mismo tiempo; no, no hay cada vez más estudiantes, son poco más o menos los mismos pero después de ver Chapel Hill casi desierto durante el verano, parecemos no acordarnos de cómo estaba hasta mayo; y sí, nos va a dar tiempo de hacer todo lo que tenemos que hacer, porque sabemos que aunque no durmamos en dos días, acabaremos ese trabajo. Situaciones, pensamientos y palabras que se repiten constantemente. Pero si hay una constante en esta vida, es paradójicamente el cambio. Todo cambia. A veces cambia tan rápido que no tenemos tiempo para asimilarlo, y a veces tan despacio que no nos damos ni cuenta de que está ocurriendo. Hay que mirar atrás, incluso más de lo que ya hacemos, para saber mejor en qué dirección mirar hacia adelante.

Hace unos días, el 28 de agosto, se cumplieron 50 años del discurso de Martin Luther King Jr., del famoso “yo tengo un sueño” a los pies del monumento a Lincoln en Washington D.C. 50 años no son gran cosa. La esperanza de vida media mundial es de unos 70 años, así que hablamos de menos de la vida de una sola persona. Sin embargo, en 50 años han ocurrido muchas cosas. Para empezar, creo que el mismísimo MLK se sorprendería, con mucha alegría, de que 50 años después de su discurso, vive en La Casa Blanca el primer presidente negro de Estados Unidos, que se encuentra allí por segundo término consecutivo.

Hace unos 50 años USA estaba en guerra con Vietnam, en plena Guerra Fría, comenzaron los conflictos en Irlanda del Norte, Stonewall inició los movimientos a favor de los derechos de los homosexuales, tuvo lugar la crisis de misiles en Cuba, 32 países africanos ganaron su independencia, J.F. Kennedy fue elegido presidente de USA y asesinado dos años después, se comenzó la construcción del muro de Berlín, murió Juan XXIII, Rusia era aún la Unión Soviética, el Che fue ejecutado en Bolivia, el hombre cada vez estaba más cerca de alcanzar la luna para hacerlo finalmente en 1969, año en el que también se lanzó el prototipo de lo que hoy llamamos Internet, se realizó el primer trasplante de corazón, Elvis y los Beatles conquistaban las emisoras de radio mientras Mary Poppins, 2001: Odisea en el Espacio, Desayuno con Diamantes y El Planeta de los Simios hacían lo propio en los cines. Hace unos 50 años…

La media de vida hoy es de 70 años, pero no siempre ha sido así. Pongamos que son 50, para tener un número redondo. Esto significaría que 2.000 años de historia sería el equivalente a la vida de 40 hombres. Puesto de esta forma, 2.000 años no parecen tanto… ¿Qué son entonces 50? Sin embargo, seguramente eran pocos los que hace 50 años pensaban que el 2013 sería como es. Un mundo globalizado en el que gran parte de la población habla diferentes idiomas, tiene distintas herencias culturales y lingüísticas, viaja regularmente y conoce nuevos países, se comunica con seres queridos que viven lejos a través de ordenadores y cámaras que les permiten verse y charlar como si estuvieran en la misma habitación, un mundo en el que en la mayoría de los países hay sufragio universal, en el que prácticamente toda la información que uno pueda desear se encuentra en Internet. Un mundo que, en definitiva, ha cambiado mucho.

Pero, ¿ha cambiado lo suficiente? Este mundo tan moderno y avanzado del que nos enorgullecemos está poblado por más de 7,000 millones de personas. A pesar de que el planeta tiene recursos para abastecer a todas y cada una de ellas, más de la mitad viven en extrema pobreza. 22.000 niños mueren cada día por falta de medios. A pesar de estas cifras, la principal causa de muerte durante toda nuestra historia ha sido lo que hoy calificamos como extremismo religioso. Quizás relacionado con esta interpretación errónea y extrema de las principales religiones en el mundo, cabe decir que un 15% de la población mundial es analfabeta. En definitiva, mucho ha cambiado, pero mucho más debe cambiar.

Generalmente pensamos que nosotros, individualmente, no podemos hacer nada para promover esos cambios. Una imagen vale más que mil palabras.

Esta histórica imagen nos demuestra que un hombre puede parar un tanque, y hasta una fila de ellos. Nadie sabe quién era este manifestante, la historia no ha podido darle nombre. Pero durante la revuelta en la Plaza de Tiananmen en China en 1989, él literalmente se alzó por lo que creía. Lo que ahora puede parecernos imposible o extremadamente difícil, puede conseguirse, pero quedarse de brazos cruzados no es la forma de hacerlo. El corazón es el principal órgano del cuerpo, y sin él no hay vida. Sin embargo, a pesar de ser un órgano tan poderoso, depende de las pequeñas células en nuestro cuerpo, que deben hacer su trabajo para que él pueda hacer el suyo.

A veces no es necesario plantarse inmóvil delante de un tanque para probar algo. Desde nuestra posición en la sociedad (abogados, educadores, médicos, padres, voluntarios, curas, policías, atletas, artistas…), lo que hacemos se refleja en el resto. Igual que en la técnica del puntillismo, millones de puntos minúsculos se unen para formar un todo único y coherente.

No pensemos que ya está todo hecho, o dejemos que otro se encargue de lo que queda por hacer. Como dijo Gandhi, “Sé el cambio que quieras ver en el mundo”.

Since I’ve been in academic environments all of my life, for me years go from September to September. Well, since I’ve lived in the US it’s more like from August to August, but what I mean is that when you hear me say things like "last year...", know that I am referring to the academic year, not to the regular calendar. That being said, happy new "year" to all of you!

It's been a busy summer. As always, I found it too short and I can hardly believe that we’re already in September, but we are... For as long as I’ve lived in the US, what counts for me as summer is the time I spend in Spain. This year, since I could only be there for a month, my summer has lasted a month. What came afterwards was just like the rest of the year: work, but with more heat, and around this area, with more storms. Each "back to school" comes with a series of unchanging constants: "this year I'm going to be more organized right from the beginning," "so many people... we have more and more students each year," "I don’t know if I can do all this by the deadline," and so on. We say these things every year, forgetting that the year before we said exactly the same thing, and the one before that, and the other... Yes, we are going to be more organized, but it will always depend on the other 200 things we're doing at the same time; no, there are not more and more students, there are more or less the same, but after seeing Chapel Hill almost deserted during the summer, we don’t seem to remember how it looked up until May; and yes, we’ll do all that stuff we have to do, because even if we don’t sleep in two days, we’ll finish the job. Situations, thoughts and words that are repeated constantly. But if there’s one constant in life, it's paradoxically change. Everything changes. Sometimes it changes so quickly that we have no time to assimilate it, and sometimes so slowly that we don’t even realize it’s happening. We have to look back, even more than we already do, to know better in what direction to look forward.

Only a few days ago, August 28 marked the 50th anniversary of the speech of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the famous "I have a dream" at the feet of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. 50 years is not much. The global average life expectancy today is about 70 years, so we're talking about less than the life of one person. However, a lot has happened in 50 years. For starters, I think MLK himself would be surprised, with great joy, that 50 years after his speech, the first black president of the United States lives in the White House, and that he’s there for his second consecutive term.

About 50 years ago, the US was at war with Vietnam, in the middle of the Cold War, conflicts started in Northern Ireland, the Stonewall movements began the fight for the rights of homosexuals, there was the missile crisis in Cuba, 32 African countries gained independence, J.F. Kennedy was elected president of the United States and murdered two years later, the Berlin Wall started to be built, Pope John XXIII died, Russia was still the Soviet Union, Che Guevara was executed in Bolivia, we were getting closer to reaching the moon to finally do it in 1969, the same year in which the prototype of what we now call the Internet was launched, we performed the first heart transplant, Elvis and the Beatles conquered radio stations as Mary Poppins, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Breakfast at Tiffany's and the Planet of the Apes did the same in theaters. About 50 years ago...

Life expectancy is 70 years today, but it has not always been so. Let’s say it’s 50, to have a round number. This would mean that 2,000 years of history would be equivalent to the lives of 40 men. When we put it this way, 2,000 years do not seem like much... Then what about 50? However, surely there were few people back in the 60s who thought that 2013 would be as it is. A globalized world in which much of the population speaks different languages, has different cultural and linguistic heritages, travels regularly and visits other countries, communicates with loved ones far away via computers and cameras that allow them to see each other and talk as if they were in the same room, a world in which in most countries there is universal suffrage, in which virtually all the information you could want is on the Internet. A world, in short, that has changed much.

But has it changed enough? This very modern and advanced world of which we are so proud is populated by more than 7 billion people. Although the planet has resources to supply each and every one of them, more than half of the population lives in extreme poverty. 22,000 children die every day for lack of means. Despite these figures, the leading cause of death throughout our history has been what we now describe as religious extremism. Perhaps related to this erroneous and extreme interpretation of the major religions in the world, it must be said that 15% of the world population is illiterate. In short, much has changed, but much more needs to change.

We usually think that we, individually, can do nothing to promote these changes. A picture is worth a thousand words.

This historic image shows that a man can stop a tank, and even a row of them. Nobody knows who this demonstrator was, history has not been able to name him. But during the uprising in Tiananmen Square in China in 1989, he literally stood for what he believed. What now may seem impossible or extremely difficult, can actually be achieved, but sitting down motionless is not the way to do it. The heart is the main organ of the body, and there’s no life without it. However, despite being so powerful, it relies on the small cells in our body to do their job in order to do its own.

Sometimes it’s not necessary to stand in front of a tank to prove something. From our position in society (lawyers, teachers, doctors, parents, volunteers, priests, policemen, athletes, artists...), what we do is reflected in the rest. As in the technique of pointillism, millions of tiny dots come together to form a single coherent whole.

Do not think that everything has already been done, nor let someone else handle what still needs to be done. As Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

"La corrupción del alma es más vergonzosa que la del cuerpo"

El otro día estuve viendo una entrevista de los años 70 a Octavio Paz en el programa “A fondo”. No era la primera vez que lo hacía. Ya la usé como fuente hace unos años para un trabajo que hice sobre El laberinto de la soledad; recordaba vagamente algunos comentarios que hizo durante la entrevista que podían ser útiles para mi tesis y decidí verla de nuevo.

Lo primero que me llamó la atención fue el programa en sí. Me cruzó la mente un breve pensamiento comparando lo que estaba viendo con la telebasura constante que invade la televisión española de hoy. Estoy segura de que si le enseñamos una foto de Octavio Paz y otra de Jorge Javier Vázquez a la gente, la inmensa mayoría no tendría ni idea de quién es el primero… Pero bueno, dejando la tristeza cultural aparte, hubo un par de cosas que Paz dijo que me dejaron pensando y que, de hecho, han causado que escriba esta entrada de blog.

La primera era que el pueblo no debía equivocarse pensando que los sistemas políticos van a terminar con los problemas, ya estemos hablando de gobiernos democráticos o no, de derechas, o de izquierdas. Los problemas que la gente quiere solucionados tienen, por lo general, una base social, y es por tanto en la esfera social donde deben empezar a solucionarse. Puede parecer básico, pero creo que es una idea muy acertada, ya que muchos pecan de esperar que venga alguien para solucionarles la papeleta y quitarse el muerto de encima. Más de uno dirá “pero si es la política la que ha creado la situación…”, y yo creo que ahí es donde radica uno de nuestros problemas básicos. Los españoles somos muy pueriles en ese sentido, muy de mirar alrededor cuando nos conviene y de señalar con el dedo, muy de “si fulano lo hace, ¿por qué no lo voy a hacer yo?”, muy de sentirnos como unos primos si no hacemos lo que la mayoría. ¿Sirve de algo culpar a unos o a otros? De acuerdo, digamos que todos los problemas del país son a causa del gobierno. ¿Y? ¿Soluciona algo saber que es así? ¿Qué hacemos: nos chivamos a su madre? No, el cambio empieza abajo, empieza con las personas. Y no hablo sólo de manifestaciones y pancartas, hablo de acción. El problema no es la política, son los políticos. El gobierno no está corrupto, sino las personas que lo forman. Derecha o izquierda da igual cuando la raíz de la enfermedad está en la misma base: las personas. No necesitamos buenos gobiernos, no necesitamos mejores sistemas. Lo que necesitamos son mejores personas, honestas, con valores, con sentido de la moral.

Eso me lleva al segundo punto de Paz, que me pareció extremadamente interesante. Decía el Nobel mexicano que lo que echa en falta la cultura hispánica (tanto de la península como de ultramar) es “un buen siglo XVIII”. Mencionaba cómo la Ilustración no caló en nuestra cultura, cómo nosotros no tenemos figuras a la altura de Rousseau, Montesquieu, Hobbes, Locke, y muchos otros. La Ilustración dio a Europa el pensamiento crítico, una serie de valores como los derechos individuales y la soberanía social, el bien común, etc. Esos ideales no se llegaron a inculcar en la sociedad española, que yo siempre he considerado que está más de un siglo por detrás de países como Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania… Intentar compararnos y equipararnos, como hacemos, con el resto de Europa es como comparar y equiparar un pueblo del salvaje oeste americano con la Nueva York contemporánea. No hay color… Necesitamos tener nuestra propia Ilustración, y puede que ahora sea el momento.

Ya se ha dicho muchas veces que la generación de jóvenes españoles de hoy en día es la mejor preparada de la historia. Esos jóvenes podrían (¿o puedo decir podríamos?) ser la solución verdadera a tanto problema. Sin embargo, la estupidez y la corrupción de la mayoría prevalecen y los más preparados no encuentran la forma de ayudar y de impulsar los cambios necesarios para las mejoras. Ante esto, sólo queda lo que ya ha ocurrido muchas veces en la historia, como durante la mal llamada “Reconquista”, la dictadura de Franco, la segunda guerra mundial… hablo de la terrible fuga de cerebros. Como si esta situación de por sí no fuera triste, debemos aguantar estoicamente tener que escuchar y leer declaraciones como la que ya mencioné en una entrada anterior de Marina del Corral diciendo que los jóvenes se van por “espíritu de aventura” o la más reciente del ministro Wert afirmando que la fuga de cerebros “no es algo necesariamente negativo”. Ante palabras como éstas, una ya no sabe si reír o llorar. Son sencillamente la prueba de que es cierto eso que dicen de que “la inteligencia humana tiene sus límites, la estupidez no”.

The other day I was watching an interview from the 70s to Octavio Paz in the show “A fondo.” It was not the first time I had watched it. I had already used it as a resource a few years ago for a paper I wrote on The Labyrinth of Solitude; I vaguely remembered some comments he made during the interview that could be useful for my dissertation, so I decided to watch it again.

The first thing I noticed was the program itself. A brief thought crossed my mind, comparing what I was seeing with the trash that constantly fills Spanish television today. I'm sure that if we show a picture of Octavio Paz and another one of Jorge Javier Vazquez to people, the vast majority would have no idea of who is the former... Well, leaving aside the sad situation of culture, there were a couple of things that Paz said that left me thinking and that, in fact, have made me write this blog entry.

The first one was that people should not make the mistake of thinking that political systems are going to end up problems, whether we are talking about democratic or non-democratic governments, liberal and conservative. The problems that people want to have solved usually have a social basis, and it is therefore in the social sphere where they should begin to be solved. It may sound simple, but I think it's a very good idea, as many people make the mistake of waiting for someone to fix their problems and thus get rid of them. Some will say "but if it is politics that has created the problematic situation..." and I think that's one of our basic issues. Spanish people are very childish in that sense, very prone to looking around when it's convenient and pointing fingers, very likely to hold thoughts such as "if so and so did it, why not me?", we tend to feel silly if we don’t do what most people do. Does it help at all to blame each other? Okay, let's say that every single problem in our country is caused by the government. So? Does it solve anything to know that? What should we do: tell the government’s mom? No, change must start from the bottom, it starts with people. And I’m not only talking about demonstrations and banners, I mean action. The problem is not politics, it’s politicians. The government is not corrupt, people in the government are. Right or left does not matter when the root of the disease is on the very basis: people. We don’t need good governments, we don’t need better systems. What we need is better people, people that are honest, that have values, that have a sense of morality.

That brings me to Paz's second point, which I found extremely interesting. The Mexican Nobel laureate said that what Hispanic culture (both in the mainland and overseas) is missing is "a good 18th century." He mentioned how the Enlightenment didn’t leave a mark on our culture, since we had no figures at the height of Rousseau, Montesquieu, Hobbes, Locke, and many others. The Enlightenment gave Europe critical thinking, a set of values such as individual rights and social sovereignty, the idea of the common good, etc. Those ideals were never instilled in Spanish society, which I have always considered to be more than a century behind countries like France, England, Germany... Trying to compare with and match the rest of Europe, as we do, is like comparing and matching a town from the wild West with contemporary New York. Impossible... We need to have our own Enlightenment, and now might be the time for it.

It has been said many times that this generation of young Spaniards is the best prepared one in our history. These young people might be the real solution to so many problems. However, the stupidity and corruption of the majority prevails, and those who are best prepared can’t find a way to help and promote the necessary changes for improvement. For this reason, the only option left is one that has already happened many times in history: during the so-called "Reconquest," the Franco dictatorship, the Second World War... I’m talking about the terrible brain drain. As if this situation was not sad in itself, we must endure stoically having to hear and read statements like the one I mentioned in a previous post of Marina del Corral saying that young people leave Spain because of their "spirit of adventure" and the more recent one by Secretary Wert stating that the Spanish brain drain "is not necessarily a negative thing." Listening to such words, one does not know whether to laugh or cry. They are simply the proof that it is true what they say: "human intelligence has limits, stupidity does not."

Es curiosa la capacidad curativa (quizás más bien anestésica) que tiene la escritura para mí. Cuando algo va mal, cuando tengo un problema, lo primero que pienso es en escribir un correo a mi hermano, mandar un mensaje a un amigo, o incluso escribir una entrada de blog.

Esta entrada es personal. No tiene propósito más que liberar un poco de todo lo que ahora mismo tengo dentro, que es demasiado para poner en palabras. Esta entrada viene a ser como una pastilla que te da el médico para que te sientas un poco mejor. Si todo fuera tan sencillo como eso, si escribir unas palabras curara todos los males…

Mi padre está enfermo. No voy a dar detalles, no voy a dar largas explicaciones… Aquellos cercanos a mí ya conocéis la situación y no es necesario decir más. Es difícil ordenar lo que siento: miedo, rabia, impotencia, inseguridad, esperanza… porque la esperanza es lo último que se pierde. Esperanza siempre. Pero eso no elimina todos los conflictos internos que tengo… ¿debería volver a España para la operación? ¿O irme por un tiempo a ayudar en lo que haga falta? Todos me dicen que no: mi madre, mi hermano, y mi padre mismo, que es quien más cuenta. Cuando se lo propuse, me dio un ‘no’ rotundo. Sé que tiene sus motivos, aunque no me los diga de viva voz. Por respeto, no diré los que creo que son; si él no los dice, yo tampoco debo hacerlo.

Con mi padre siempre me he entendido. Muchas veces así, sin necesidad de decirlo todo de viva voz. Cuando mi madre estaba embarazada de mí, él esperaba tener otro varón. Buena sorpresa se llevó aquel 21 de agosto cuando llegué… Aun así, siempre hemos estado muy muy unidos. Quién se lo iba a haber dicho... A ambos nos gusta salir, somos sociales, nos gusta Sevilla, su historia, sus tradiciones, estar con amigos… Los dos somos sensibles y un tanto sentimentalones, de lágrima fácil… Mi padre y yo siempre hemos salido juntos a todas partes: los fines de semana, en Semana Santa, Feria, eventos… Él me ha enseñado prácticamente todo lo que sé de Sevilla, de sus tradiciones y sus leyendas, de sus calles, de cómo era la vida hace años, cuando la ciudad era tan diferente. Las noches de risas con sus amigos, los chistes, el sacar una guitarra y ponerse a cantar, los paseos, las escapadas a algún pueblo para ver un museo… Lo hemos pasado siempre muy bien juntos.

Pero también tenemos nuestras diferencias, y discutimos, y a veces me saca de quicio… Le tengo algunos reproches, no siempre ha hecho bien las cosas. Pero es mi padre y lo quiero como a nadie. Seguro que yo también le he dado motivos para no estar muy contento más de una vez, y aun así sé que me quiere más que a nada en el mundo.

Por todo esto, y por muchísimo más que no puedo ni siquiera aproximarme a expresar, no puedo evitar preocuparme. Por mucho que me diga mi familia “tú no te preocupes”, “piensa en positivo”… a positiva no me gana nadie, y sé que mi padre puede con esto y con lo que le echen. Pero es mi padre… y sé cómo lo está pasando, y yo estoy lejos y no le puedo abrazar ahora que tanto lo necesita… Pero desde la distancia pienso en él, y le mando toda mi energía positiva, y rezo para que todo salga bien.

It is curious the healing ability (perhaps rather anesthetic) that writing has for me. When something goes wrong, when I have a problem, the first thing I think of is writing an email to my brother, sending a message to a friend, or writing a blog entry.

This entry is personal. It has no purpose other than to release a little of everything I have inside right now, which is too much to put into words. This entry is like a pill that the doctor gives you to make you feel a little better. If everything was as simple as that, if writing a few words could heal...

My dad is sick. I will not give any details, I will not give long explanations... Those close to me already know the situation and I don't need to say any more. It is difficult to sort my feelings: fear, anger, powerlessness, insecurity, hope... because hope is the last thing to go. There is always hope. But that does not get rid of all the internal conflicts that I have... should I return to Spain for the surgery? Should I maybe go for a while to help my family? Everyone tells me not to do it: my mother, my brother, and my father himself, who is the most important person in this whole picture. When I suggested it to him, I got an outright 'no.' I know he has his reasons, but I won't say them out of respect. If he doesn't do it, I won't either.

My dad and I always understood each other well. Many times, just like that, without having to say things aloud. When my mom was pregnant with me, he was hoping to have another boy. What a surprise for him when I arrived that August 21… Still, we have always had a very close relationship. Who would have thought... We both like going out, we are social, we love Sevilla, its history, its traditions, being with friends… We are both sensitive and kind of sentimental, we cry easily… My dad and I would always go everywhere together: on the weekends, during Holy Week, Feria, events… He has taught me pretty much everything I know about Sevilla, its traditions and legends, about its streets, about life there years ago when the city was so different. Nights out with friends, jokes, bringing a guitar and singing, walks, day trips to some small town to see a museum or exhibition… We have always had a great time together.

But we also have our differences, and we argue, and he sometimes drives me crazy… I could reproach him for some things, he hasn't always done the right thing in his life. But he is my dad, and I love him no matter what. I'm sure I also gave him reasons more than once not to be happy, and still I know he loves me more than anything in the world.

For all of this, and for so much more that I can't put into words, I can't help being worried. No matter how much my family tells me not to do it, no much how much they ask me to be positive… I'm a very optimistic person, and I know my dad can overcome this and anything else. "La hipocresía es el colmo de todas las maldades"

Hace un par de semanas, Dª Marina del Corral dijo que los jóvenes españoles se van al extranjero “por su espíritu aventurero” y no por la situación económica que se está viviendo. Por alusiones, he tenido desde entonces muchas ganas de dedicarle a esta señora mi próxima entrada de blog. Tal honor para ella.

Que nadie me tome por hipócrita (para hipócrita, esta señora): yo estoy en USA porque quiero, porque en su momento se me planteó la oportunidad y pensé que era buena opción. A la larga, se convirtió en mi salvación, porque sinceramente no sé lo que estaría haciendo por España ahora mismo si no hubiera decidido cruzar el charco. Pero una cosa es ésa, y otra muy diferente saber que, si mañana me quiero volver, sería un suicidio laboral y económico. Así que no, Doña Marina; definitivamente no. La gente no se va por espíritu aventurero. Por espíritu aventurero se pega uno un viaje a la Conchinchina, o se alista en una expedición con Miguel de la Quadra Salcedo, pero no se va del país sin saber cuándo volverá o si llegará a hacerlo.

Estar lejos de la tierra de uno, duele. Estar lejos de la familia, duele. Escuchar las noticias que llegan de España, duele. Ver la imagen que damos y la opinión que despertamos en el extranjero, duele. Nadie busca ese dolor por aventura. Nadie busca ese dolor y punto. Al que le toca sufrirlo, le toca por motivos muy distintos. Y digo estas palabras sintiéndome un tanto hipócrita: yo tengo aquí también una familia, he encontrado aquí a la persona con la voy a pasar el resto de mi vida, veo a mi familia en España tan a menudo como me lo permiten mi calendario y mi cuenta bancaria… Soy una afortunada. No he tenido que echar raíces en otro lugar; sencillamente mis raíces se han extendido a mucha distancia. Pero muchos no tienen esa suerte. Muchos se van sin saber cuándo verán a su familia de nuevo, no logran adaptarse al cambio, no encuentran las oportunidades que esperaban… Se van porque no hay otra. ¿Espíritu de aventura? No, señora: espíritu de supervivencia.

No soy yo partidaria de revoluciones ni medidas drásticas, pero realmente escuchar declaraciones como ésta ofenden y le hacen a una que le hierva la sangre y se le revuelvan las entrañas. No sé si es miedo a repetir tragedias pasadas, pero no entiendo cómo España no es ahora mismo una batalla campal. No sé cómo los políticos tienen cara suficiente para salir a la calle, cómo nos pueden pedir que nos sigamos apretando el cinturón desde sus asientos de primera clase. Poca vergüenza no, ninguna. “Arrieritos somos, y en el camino nos encontraremos” que dice el refrán. No sé yo si esta gente alguna vez van a tener que pagar por todas estas barbaridades que están haciendo y todas las desgracias que están causando, pero si hay justicia, lo harán. Justicia divina o humana, alguna deberá cogerles.

En conclusión, Sra. del Corral, sentada aquí en el aeropuerto de Philadelphia esperando mi vuelo para volver a España para las fiestas, le aseguro que no es la aventura la que aquí me trajo. El que quiera aventura, que se quede en España. Eso sí que requiere valor…

"Hypocrisy is the acme of all evil"

A couple of weeks ago, Mrs. Marina del Corral –the Spanish Secretary of Immigration and Emigration– said that young Spaniards are leaving the country because of their “adventurous spirit” and not because of the crisis. For obvious reasons, I’ve been wanting to dedicate my next blog entry to this lady. Such an honor for her.

Don’t think I’m a hypocrite (we already have enough hypocrisy with Mrs. del Corral): I’m in the US because I want to, because I had the opportunity and I thought it was a good option to choose. In the long run, it turned out to be my salvation, because I really don’t know what I would be doing in Spain had I not decided to cross the pond. That’s one thing, but it’s a very different one to know that if I decided to go back tomorrow, it would be a suicide in terms of work and money. So no, Ms. Marina; definitely no. People are not leaving because of their sense of adventure. Because of their sense of adventure, they would go on a trip to some remote place or join an expedition in the Amazon, but they would not leave the country without knowing when they will be back, or if the will at all.

Being far from one’s country, hurts. Being far from one’s family, hurts. Listening to the news that come from Spain, hurts. Seeing the image we show to the rest of the world and the opinion they have of us, hurts. Nobody looks for that pain because of their “sense of adventure.” Nobody looks for that pain, period. Those who suffer through it do it for very different reasons. And I say these words feeling a bit hypocritical: I also have a family here, I have found here the person with whom I’m going to spend the rest of my life, I see my family in Spain as often as my schedule and my bank account allow me to… I’m very lucky. I didn’t have to find new roots in a different place. My roots simply grew a lot and very far. But many people are not that lucky. Many leave without knowing when they’ll be back to see their families again, they find it hard to adapt to a new place, they don’t find the opportunities they were hoping for… They leave because it’s their only option. Spirit of adventure? No, ma’am: spirit of survival.

Not that I’m in favor of revolutions or drastic measures, but listening to this kind of thing is offensive, insulting, and it makes one want to rebel. I don’t know if it’s because of a fear to repeat past tragedies, but I don’t understand how Spain is not a battlefield right now. I don’t know how politicians dare going out, how they can keep asking people for sacrifices from their first-class seats. They have no shame whatsoever. “What goes around, comes around,” as the saying goes. I’m not sure if these people will ever pay for all the things they are doing and all the calamities they are causing, but if there is any justice, they will. Either divine or human justice, but one of them will get to them.

In conclusion, Mrs. del Corral, sitting here at the airport in Philadephia, waiting for my flight to go back home for the holidays, I can assure you that thirst of adventure is not what brought me here. Whoever is looking for adventure should actually stay in Spain. That takes courage, indeed…

Lo prometido es deuda y, aunque últimamente ando bastante estresada, he decidido que como hoy se cumple un mes desde que Anderson y yo nos casamos, es un buen día para escribir este post. Os dije que os contaría cómo fue el fin de semana de la boda, y a eso voy a dedicar esta entrada.

Tanto Anderson como yo estábamos un poquito nerviosos, especialmente cuando tuvimos que preparar todo para meterlo en el coche. Olvidarse de algo no era opción, ni mucho menos… Vestido, zapatos, cinturón, anillos… Prueba superada: no se nos quedó nada. El viaje fue bien: no había tráfico, escuchamos buena música (no tengo que decir quién hizo de DJ…) y hablamos mucho también. Más de cuatro años juntos… mi familia tan lejos… su abuelo que ya no está… Como siempre en la vida, cosas más dulces y cosas más amargas, pero el sentimiento en general era bueno. Mi familia no estuvo en esta boda, pero estará en la de España. Además, aunque no la presenciaran físicamente, yo sabía que todos y cada uno de ellos estaba conmigo, pensando en mí y yo pensando en ellos. En cuanto a aquellos que ya no están en este mundo… nos gusta pensar que estaban allí pero de forma diferente, viéndonos y alegrándose por nosotros.

Cuando llegamos a casa de los padres de Anderson, luces apagadas, sólo Mike salió a recibirnos… Un poco extrañados, entramos y descubrimos qué pasaba: ¡sorpresa! La madre y la abuela de mi ahora marido nos habían hecho una preciosa tarta de boda. Yo, por supuesto, empecé a llorar… Y ése fue sólo el comienzo de un largo fin de semana de lágrimas. Después de la sorpresa de la tarta nos dieron unos regalos y unas tarjetas. Tanto el gesto como las palabras que nos dedicaron me hicieron llorar de nuevo… Supongo que ya estaba con los sentimientos a flor de piel, y poco se necesitaba para hacerme soltar una lagrimita. Eso sumado a mi naturaleza llorona… el resultado era de esperar.

A la mañana siguiente, la madre de Anderson nos preparó un desayuno increíble: fruta, tostadas, rollos de canela, torrijas (que aquí llaman French toast pero que son torrijas de to la vida…) y, después de eso, el tiempo empezó a pasar muy muy rápido. Hicimos un par de mandados y luego me tocaba la rutina de la novia: peluquería y maquillaje. Ambas fueron experiencias interesantes, ya que nunca antes me habían hecho un peinado ni me habían maquillado. Sinceramente, yo me sentía muy rara, pero todos dicen que quedó muy bien, así que para mí eso es más que suficiente. Cuando volvimos a casa, sólo había tiempo para vestirnos. Una vez con el vestido, los zapatos y todo, llamé a mis padres. Más lágrimas… una combinación de alegría y tristeza muy difícil de explicar. Tras limpiarme las lágrimas y venirme arriba un poquito, fotos. Nuestra fotógrafa oficial fue la hermana de Anderson, Savannah. Le dejé mi cámara e hizo un trabajo excelente. Hemos recibido muchos cumplidos por las fotos, así que le estoy muy muy agradecida.

La ceremonia fue en Bath, y llegamos justo en el momento adecuado: a la puesta de sol, lo que nosotros queríamos. No hacía frío, no había ruido, el paisaje era precioso, y fue una pequeña ceremonia íntima que no voy a olvidar nunca. Contuve las lágrimas todo lo que pude, pero cuando llegó la hora de decir los votos… me costó un poco más aguantar el tipo. Anillos, beso, abrazo… y oficialmente casados.

Después de la ceremonia les pedí a la familia que nos acompañaran al cementerio. Quería dejar mi ramo, que había hecho yo misma, en la tumba del abuelo de Anderson. A él le encantaban las flores y sé que le hubiera encantado estar con nosotros ese día… Era mi manera de demostrarle que para nosotros, él estaba allí.

Finalmente, nos fuimos todos a cenar y lo pasamos muy bien. Una cena agradable con toda la familia y, por fin, ya más relajados y sin la tensión y los nervios de antes. A pesar de que nos regalaron unos postres, volvimos a casa para comer la tarta de boda que nos habían preparado Vanessa y Mema. Estaba deliciosa… De repente, nos dimos cuenta de lo tarde que era. ¡Anderson y yo nos teníamos que ir! Habíamos reservado una habitación en un Bed&Breakfast en New Bern, que está casi a una hora de Little Washington. Así que con las maletas y nuestro letrerito de “Just Married” que nos había hecho Savannah colocado en el coche, nos echamos a la carretera.

Llegamos muy tarde y casi perdemos la reserva, pero fueron amables y nos dejaron mantenerla. El sitio era pequeño y bonito, una de estas casas antiguas restauradas en el centro del pueblo. El día siguiente lo pasamos paseando, haciendo un poco de turismo… y luego de vuelta a Chapel Hill. A pesar de las ausencia de mi familia, fue un fin de semana de boda muy especial. Hoy hace un mes ya y no podría estar más feliz…

A promise is a promise and, although I have been quite stressed out lately, I’ve decided that since today it is a month since Anderson and I got married, it is a good day to write this post. I said that I would tell you how the wedding weekend went, and that’s what I’m going to do in this entry.

Both Anderson and I were a little nervous, especially when we had to prepare everything to put it in the car. Forgetting something was not an option, of course… Dress, jacket, shoes, belt, rings… Test passed: we didn’t leave anything behind. The trip went well: no traffic, we listened to good music (no need to say who was the DJ…) and we also talked a lot. More than four years together… my family being so far away… his grandpa not being with us anymore… As it always happens in life, things that are sweet and others that are sour, but in general we felt happy. My family could not be at this wedding, but they’ll be at the Spanish one. Also, even though they were not there physically, I knew they were all with me, thinking about me and me thinking about them. Regarding those who are not in this world anymore… We like to think that they were there but in a different way, looking at us and feeling happy.

When we arrived at the family’s house, lights were off and only Mike came to see us at the door… It was strange, but once we came in we soon discovered why: surprise! Anderson’s mom and grandma had made a beautiful wedding cake for us. Of course, I started to cry… And that was just the beginning of a long weekend of tears. After the surprise, they gave us some presents and cards. Both their gesture and the words they dedicated to us made me cry again… I guess that I was already extra-sensitive, so not much was needed to make me shed a tear. That plus my crier nature… the result was expected.

The next morning, Anderson’s mom prepared an incredible breakfast for everybody: fruit, bagels, cinnamon rolls, French toast… and, after that, time started to pass by very very fast. We run a couple of errands and then I had the typical bride routine: hair and make-up. They were both interesting experiences, since I had never had a hairdo or my make-up done before. Honestly, I felt very weird, but everybody thinks it looked good, so that’s more than enough for me. When we cam back home, we only had time to get dressed. Once in the dress, shoes, and everything, I called my parents. More tears… a combination of joy and sadness impossible to explain. After drying my tears and cheer up a little, photo session. Our official photographer was Anderson’s sister, Savannah. I gave her my camera and she did an excellent job. We have received many compliments on the pictures, so I’m very very thankful.

The ceremony was in Bath, and we arrived at the perfect time: sunset, as we wanted. It was not cold, there was no noise, the landscape was gorgeous, and it was a little private ceremony that I will never forget. I held my tears as much as I could, but when we got to the part of our vows… it was extremely difficult. Rings, kiss, hug… and we were officially married.

After the ceremony I asked the family to go to the cemetery. I wanted to leave my bouquet, which I made myself, over Pa’s grave. He loved flowers and I know he would have loved to be there with us that day… It was my way to show him that, for us, he was there.

Finally, we all went for dinner and we had a great time. A nice family dinner at a nice restaurant, more relaxed and without the tension and the nervousness we had had before. Although they gave us some complimentary desserts, we came back home to have some of the wedding cake that Vanessa and Mema had made. It was delicious… Suddenly, we realized it was very late. Anderson and I had to leave! We had reserved a room in a Bed&Breakfast in New Bern. So with our suitcases and our “Just Married” sign that Savannah had made for us in our car, we got on the road.

We arrived very late and we almost lost our reservation, but they were very kind and let us keep it. The place was beautiful and cozy, right in downtown New Bern. We spent the next day walking around and sightseeing. Then, back to Chapel Hill. Despite the absence of my family, it was an extremely special wedding weekend. It’s been a month, and I could not be happier…

Mirando hacia dentro

Experimento: echar un vistazo a mis recientes estados en Facebook para hacer un análisis de qué parece haber sido importante o digno de mención en mi vida últimamente.

Método: ir bajando con el cursor mi página de perfil. Tomar notas mentales. De vez en cuando mirar lo que tengo por mi escritorio para relacionarlo con lo que voy leyendo y obtener un análisis más exhaustivo.

Herramientas: ordenador, wi-fi, manos, cerebro.

Observación: parece que los temas centrales del último mes (poco más o menos) han sido: haber cumplido 30 años, la importancia de la familia y los amigos, estrés por trabajo/estudios, cocina, boda, política en USA y España.

Conclusiones: parece que los 30 no me han afectado para nada. Estuve súper-feliz de cumplirlos rodeada de un montón de amigos y pasándolo genial. La felicidad duró lo que duró, y con el comienzo del curso vino rápidamente el estrés y la falta de suficientes horas al día para hacer lo que tenía que hacer. Sin embargo, sigo viva y dando guerra, así que no hay que quejarse. Una vez más, la familia y los amigos consiguen que todo sea mejor y se olvide el estrés un poco: fiestecillas, reuniones, grandes sesiones de Skype con la familia, cocinar con Anderson… Valorar las pequeñas cosas, como encontrar bonitas flores en mi porche cuando salgo por la mañana temprano al campus, puede marcar una gran diferencia. Siempre hay una nota amarga que nos desafía: mi abuela está malita y eso hace que no haya visto a mi padre por Skype tanto como de costumbre, por haber estado acompañándola en el hospital; la madre de una muy buena amiga está también enferma y la tiene muy preocupada… Pero supongo que la vida es así y siempre nos da un granito de cal y otro de arena...

Experiment: taking a look at my recent status updates on Facebook to make an analysis of what seems to have been important or noteworthy in my life lately.

Method: scroll down my profile page. Take mental notes. Occasionally look what I have on my desktop to relate to what I'm reading and get a more thorough analysis.

Tools: laptop, wi-fi, hands, brain.

Obervation: it seems that the central topics of the last month (more or less) were: having turned 30, the importance of family and friends, stress due to work / studies, cooking, wedding, politics in the U.S. and in Spain.

Conclusions: it seems that turning 30 has not affected me at all. I was super happy to do it surrounded by a bunch of friends and having a great time. The happiness lasted for a while, and then the beginning of the school came quickly and with it, stress and lack of enough hours in the day to do what I had to do. However, I'm fine, so I should not complain. Again, family and friends make everything better and make me forget about the stress a bit: parties, hanging out, great Skype sessions with the family, cooking with Anderson ... Valuing little things, like finding beautiful flowers on my porch when I leave early in the morning to go to campus, can make a big difference. There is always a bitter note that challenges us: my grandmother is sick and that is why I have not seen my father on Skype as much as usual, because he has been accompanying her in the hospital; the mother of a good friend is also sick and she is having a hard time... But I guess that's life and it always gives us six of one and half a dozen of the other…

Señor presidente del gobierno, señores ministros, diputados, alcaldes, concejales, y demás numerosos políticos españoles:

Ni van a leer ustedes nunca estas líneas, ni yo voy a hacer esfuerzo alguno porque lleguen a ustedes. Todos estos comentarios de los ciudadanos, recogidas de firmas y protestas públicas varias han demostrado ser completamente inútiles a la hora de cambiar las cosas en nuestro país. Sin embargo, yo soy una fiel defensora del “derecho al pataleo” y por tanto, ejerzo el mío para expresar pública y libremente mi opinión sobre la triste situación que vive España desde hace ya años.

No tengo una afiliación política determinada. Yo sólo creo que las personas deben ser libres para tomar decisiones que les conciernen de manera individual, y que el deber de un gobierno es el de asegurar el bienestar general de la población con respecto a derechos básicos, sin entrar en juicios morales o temas religiosos. No sé de leyes, no he leído nunca la Constitución Española de cabo a rabo, no entiendo de economía, ni tampoco de estrategias políticas. Lo que sí tengo es sentido común, que como alguien ya bien dijo parece ser el menos común de los sentidos. También tengo una conciencia. Si no saben de qué hablo, les recomiendo la lectura del cuento de Pinocchio, donde deben prestar atención al personaje de Pepito Grillo (aunque en el libro no recibe ese nombre), que representa esta conciencia. Por desgracia, mucho me temo que ustedes ya despidieron a su Pepito Grillo particular, o le hicieron una reducción de jornada, y ahora estará como muchos otros en la cola del paro o viviendo en el extranjero.

En el extranjero es donde yo misma me encuentro desde hace seis años, al otro lado del océano. Y créanme, ver desde la distancia cómo unos pocos destrozan mi país, se ríen de él, y predican a los ciudadanos que los recortes de los derechos más básicos son la solución al problema, causan rabia y vergüenza casi por igual. Si encima esas personas viven sin problema alguno, sin la preocupación de qué va a pasar con sus hijos el día de mañana, si utilizan el dinero de las arcas públicas para sus fiestas privadas, viajes, y demás caprichos, ya es cuando la sangre de una empieza a hervir. Definitivamente, ustedes perdieron su conciencia en su camino hacia la cumbre política.

Como ya dije, estoy lejos de ser una experta en economía. Sin embargo, pedir un préstamo para saldar una deuda, me parece una idea de lo más absurdo. Reducir el dinero destinado a la educación, la sanidad, la ayuda a las personas con problemas, etc., me parece un acto hipócrita y egoísta digno del más despreciable Judas. Siguiendo con las referencias literarias, les recuerdo que Judas se encuentra en la última fosa del último círculo del infierno de Dante, el más profundo nivel que corresponde a los traidores. Y así los veo yo a ustedes, como traidores. Los ciudadanos escuchan sus palabras, ponen su fe y su voto en ustedes, y lo que les dan a cambio es un peor nivel de vida y una sarta de mentiras en forma de discursos que los más ignorantes siguen creyendo y contra los que los más avispados no tienen armas.

Sus sueldos mensuales se cuentan en los miles de euros, pero ustedes aprueban decretos y enmiendas que reducen a los pocos cientos el dinero con el que una familia entera debe subsistir. Ustedes mandan a sus hijos a las mejores escuelas privadas o al extranjero, mientras que condenan a los demás españoles a un sistema educativo público cada vez peor y más caro. Ustedes cuentan con sus clínicas y médicos privados, mientras que retiran fondos de la sanidad pública, sin importarles los ancianos que con su mínima pensión no alcanzan a comprar sus medicamentos. En definitiva, ustedes viven del cuento, a base de contar cuentos al resto de los españoles. Si eso no es una traición, ya me contarán ustedes qué es.

Estoy segura de que podrían darme infinitas explicaciones “técnicas” de por qué estas medidas son necesarias. Estoy segura de que me citarían leyes, normativas, teorías económicas… No niego que incluso ustedes mismos hayan llegado al punto de creerse sus propios cuentos. Pero creo que ya todos tienen edad como para salir del mundo de la fantasía y entrar en el real. Este mundo debería regirse por el sentido común, y ese sentido común me dice, al menos a mí, que éste es el momento en que las grandes fortunas deben dar la cara. Tras años de haber sido mimadas y consentidas por los gobiernos, ahora se les debe exigir que tomen responsabilidad. Que si hay que hacer recortes, se les hagan a ellos. Que si ha que subir impuestos, se les suban a ellos. Ya hemos pagado más que suficiente nosotros los ciudadanos de a pie como para encima tener ahora que arreglar los problemas creados por otros.

Según la lógica de ustedes, España es una madre con dos hijos. Mientras juegan, el mayor rompe un jarrón muy caro. La solución que ustedes sugieren es la de quitarle la paga al pequeño hasta que se pague el jarrón, mientras que el mayor sale impune, sigue con su paga semanal (que por supuesto, es mucho mayor que la de su hermano), y es libre de seguir rompiendo lo que se le ponga por delante. Qué más da. Ya lo pagará el pequeño… Sólo les pido cuidado con esta lógica suya. El hermano pequeño se puede rebelar en cualquier momento.

Open Letter

Dear Mr. President, ministers, members of parliament, mayors, city councilors, and other numerous Spanish politicians,

You are never going to read these lines, and I am never going to make any effort to make them reach you. All those comments of citizens, collections of signatures and public protests have proven to be useless when trying to change things in our country. However, I am a faithful supporter of the right to complain and, therefore, I exercise mine to express my opinion publicly and freely about the sad situation that Spain has been living for some years.

I have no particular political affiliation. I just think people should be free to make decisions that affect them individually, and that the duty of any government is to ensure the general welfare of the population with respect to basic rights, without judging moral or religious issues. I don’t know about laws, I have not ever read the Spanish Constitution from beginning to end, and I don’t understand economic or political strategies. What I do have is common sense, but as someone already said, it seems to be the least common of the senses. And I have a conscience, too. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I recommend you reading the story of Pinocchio, where you must pay attention to the character of Jiminy Cricket (although he doesn’t have that name in the book), who represents that conscience. Unfortunately, I’m afraid that you fired your own Jiminy Cricket, or you reduced his working hours and now he’s probably, like many others, in the unemployment office or living abroad.

Abroad is where I have been living for six years now, across the ocean. And believe me, watching from the distance how a few people destroy my country, how they laugh at it, and preach to citizens that cutting the most basic rights is the solution to the problem, makes me feel equally angry and embarrassed. If, on top of everything, these people live without any problems, without worrying about what will happen to their children tomorrow, if they use public money for private parties, trips, and more, then one’s blood begins to boil. Definitely, you lost your conscience on your way up to the political summit.

As I said, I'm far from being an expert in economics. However, asking for a loan to pay off a debt seems to me like an absurd idea. Reducing the money spent on education, health, helping people with problems, etc… seems like a hypocritical and selfish act worthy of the most despicable Judas. Following the literary references, I remind you that Judas is in the last round of the last circle of Dante's Inferno, the deepest level corresponding to the traitors. And that’s how I see you, as traitors. Citizens hear your words, they put their faith and their votes in you, and what they are given in return is a worse living situation and a pack of lies in the form of speeches that the most ignorant ones still believe, and against which the smartest ones have no weapons.

Your monthly salaries are counted in thousands of euros, but you approve decrees and amendments that reduce to the few hundreds the money that an entire family has to survive with. You send your children to study at the best private schools or abroad, while you condemn the rest of Spaniards to an increasingly worse and more expensive public education system. You have your clinics and private doctors, while you take funds from the public health system, not caring about the elderly with their minimal pensions not having enough to buy their medicines. In short, you live off other people, while telling stories to the rest of us. If that is not treason, you tell me what it is.

I'm sure you could give me endless “technical” explanations of why these measures are necessary. I'm sure you would cite laws, regulations, economic theories... I don’t reject the idea that maybe you have reached the point of believing your own stories. But I think you are all old enough to leave the world of fantasy and come back to the real one. This world should be governed by common sense, and common sense tells me that this is the time when great fortunes should come forward. After years of being spoiled and pampered by governments, now they should be required to take responsibility. If you have to reduce funding, reduce your funding to them. If you have to increase taxes, increase theirs. We, ordinary citizens, have already paid more than enough, and we shouldn’t have to pay to fix up the problems they have created, too.

According to your logic, Spain is a mother with two children. While they play, the older one breaks an expensive vase. The solution you suggest is leaving the younger one without his allowance until the vase is paid for, while the older one gets no punishment, keeps his allowance (which is, of course, much greater than the one of his brother), and is free to keep breaking stuff. It doesn’t matter. His younger brother will pay for it, right? I’m just asking you to be careful with this logic of yours. The younger brother may rebel any time.

¡Tanto tiempo sin escribir! Y no ha sido por falta de ganas... De hecho, muchas cosas han pasado en los dos últimos meses y llevo queriendo compartir unas líneas desde hace semanas, pero las circunstancias a veces nos obligan a variar el camino que queríamos tomar y debemos dar un rodeo para llegar al mismo sitio...

¿Qué hay de nuevo? Bueno, pues un poco de todo: malo, bueno, y ni lo uno ni lo otro... Posiblemente el hecho más importante de las últimas semanas ha sido, desgraciadamente, la muerte del abuelo de Anderson. Muchos ya sabíais que estaba enfermo, que llevaba más de un año luchando de todas las formas posibles contra un cáncer que se extendía por todas partes... Hasta finales del año pasado, estuvo "bien", pero todo cambió de repente a finales de febrero. Unos resultados de unas pruebas mostraban un principio de fallo hepático. Casi no hubo tiempo de reaccionar... a los dos días lo llevaron a urgencias y allí le dieron la noticia que sabíamos que tendría que llegar en algún momento (pero que no por ello es menos dura): ya no había nada que hacer sino esperar. Era cuestión de días, según los médicos, y todo dependía de la fortaleza del pobre hombre. Días muy difíciles siguieron... todo era una agonía constante, no sabíamos si iba a ser cuestión de un día o una semana. Sin embargo, dentro de lo malo, hubo un momento feliz que pudimos compartir con la familia. El abuelo de Anderson tenía una gran ilusión por vernos casados, pero sabíamos que eso no iba a poder ocurrir. Así que, para que el hombre tuviera una alegría lo más cercana posible a esa, decidimos prometernos ese mismo fin de semana. No fue una decisión totalmente repentina; Anderson y yo ya lo habíamos hablado y, como sabíamos que a Pa le quedaba poco tiempo, pensamos en hacer una pequeña ceremonia con la familia y compartir ese momento con todos ellos. Sin embargo, pensamos hacerlo alrededor de abril, pero los planes cambiaron... Ese mismo fin de semana, Anderson y yo preparamos una cenita, y con la familia a nuestro lado, Anderson me pidió que me casara con él, entregándome el mismo anillo de compromiso que su abuelo le había dado a su abuela 47 años atrás. Fue un momento muy bonito para todos, y es muy especial para mí llevar este anillo. Aunque en España el compromiso "oficial" no sea una costumbre muy común, aquí (especialmente en el sur) sí lo es. Por eso mismo Anderson quiso hablar con mis padres antes de pedirme matrimonio, y así lo hizo. Mis padres entendieron perfectamente la situación, y también sabían que este momento iba a llegar tarde o temprano, así que se alegraron mucho y agradecieron su gesto.

Aquella noche en que nos prometimos, fue la última en la que Pa, el abuelo de Anderson, se levantó de la cama. Incluso comió un poco durante la cena, algo que ya prácticamente había dejado de hacer. Dos semanas después, murió. Han sido, y siguen siendo, tiempos muy difíciles para la familia. Sin embargo, a todos nos alegra y nos conforta saber que Pa tuvo ese momento de alegría poco antes de morir. Y no sólo ése, sino muchos otros que especialmente durante el último año hemos querido compartir con él.

Recientemente, la madre de una persona muy querida en mi familia, también murió. No obstante, no quiero hacer de esta entrada una de tristeza. Muy al contrario, quiero transmitir un mensaje positivo y quizás de reflexión. En casos como éste, de un familiar que nos deja (especialmente un padre o un abuelo), es difícil encontrar algo que decir que alivie el dolor de la familia, algo que hacer por ellos que les pueda hacer sentir mejor, una palabra que no suene superficial ante tanto dolor... Quizás no hay palabras, pero sí imágenes. Todos guardamos en la memoria momentos especiales que vivimos con nuestros seres queridos. ¿Quién no ha recordado cosas que ya ni sabíamos que se encontraban en nuestra memoria cuando pensaba en un ser querido que ya no está? La memoria puede ayudarnos a través de los momentos más difíciles...

Pero es muy fácil caer en el error de considerar la memoria algo retrospectivo, y de ahí la cita que he escogido como título de esta entrada. No pensemos en la memoria sencillamente como un recuerdo del pasado. La memoria está viva, y como una planta, hay que alimentarla. Cada día vivimos momentos que, algún día, serán nuestros recuerdos. Por eso hay que aprovechar cada segundo, ser "pro-activos" (ahora que está tan de moda esa expresión) y pensar no sólo en lo vivido, sino en lo que nos queda por vivir. Cada día creamos recuerdos... Es una especie de hucha en la que vamos metiendo moneditas poco a poco. Ese día, esos pocos céntimos nos parecen un poco inútiles ("¿qué voy a comprar yo con eso, si no es nada?"). Pero un día algo ocurre y necesitamos toda la ayuda posible... Abrimos la hucha y, lo que eran sólo unos céntimos cada día, se han convertido en una cantidad mayor que nos ayuda a salir del problema.

Los buenos recuerdos no son lo único que nos va a ayudar a sanar una herida tan profunda como la que deja la muerte de un ser querido, pero son sin duda un buen ungüento para empezar la cura. El tiempo, la familia y los amigos, la tan difícil de encontrar a veces actitud positiva frente a las cosas... Todo eso y más es necesario. Nadie dijo que fuera a ser fácil, pero muchos sí han dicho que somos capaces de grandes cosas, de mucho más de lo que pensamos que podemos hacer... Cuando el reloj de arena deja caer el último grano, no debemos pensar que ahí termina la historia. Tan sólo hay que tener la fuerza para darle la vuelta a la cápsula de cristal y empezar de nuevo...

Long time no entry! And it has not been because I didn't feel like writing... In fact, many things have happened in the past couple of months and I've been wanting to share some lines for weeks, but circumstances sometimes make us change the path we were planning on taking and take the long way around to get to the same place...

What's new? Well, a little bit of everything: some bad, some good, and some in between... The most important event in the past few weeks has been the death of Anderson's grandpa. Many of you already knew that he was sick, that he had been fighting cancer for over a year in every possible way. Up until the end of last year, he was doing "fine," but the results of some test in February showed the first signs of liver failure. We hardly had time to react... two days later, he had to be taken to the ER and, there, we got the news that we knew for a long time that we would get (although that doesn't make things any easier): there was nothing else to do but waiting. It was a question of days, according to the doctors, and everything depended on the strength of Pa. Difficult days followed that... it felt like a constant agony, we didn't know for how long was he going to stay with us: maybe a day, maybe a week. However, there was a happy moment within this sad situation that we were able to share with the family. Anderson's grandpa had the dearest wish of seeing us getting married, but we knew that that was not going to happen, unfortunately. So, in order to have him enjoy some similar happiness, we decided to get engaged that same weekend. It was not exactly a sudden decision; Anderson and I had already talked about it and, since we knew that Pa didn't have much longer, we thought about having some private ceremony with the family and share that moment with them. However, we thought we would do it around April, but plans changed. That same weekend, Anderson and I made dinner and, with the family by our side, Anderson proposed giving me the same ring that his grandpa had given his grandma 47 years before. It was a very beautiful moment for everyone, and it is very special for me to be wearing this ring. Although in Spain engagements are not celebrated, they are here (specially in the south). For that same reason, Anderson wanted to talk with my parents before actually proposing, and that's what he did. My parents understood the situation and agreed that it would be a beautiful gesture. Besides, they knew that it was coming sooner or later! They did really appreciate the fact that Anderson talked with them and explained everything...

That night in which we got engaged was the last one in which Pa got out of bed. He even had some dinner, something that he practically didn't do anymore. Two weeks later, he passed away. It has been, and it still is, a very difficult time for the family. However, we are all very happy that Pa got to live that moment of happiness before he died. And not only that one, but many others that specially during that last year we've wanted to share with him.

Recently, the mother of a very dear friend of my family passed away too. Nevertheless, I don't want to make this entry a sad one. Quite the opposite, I want to transmit a positive message, and maybe one of reflection. In cases like this, the death of a dear family member (specially a parent or a grandparent), it is difficult to find something to say that may soothe the pain of the family, something to do that may make them feel any better, some word that may not sound shallow in view of such pain... Maybe there are no words, but there are images. We all keep in our memory special moments that we lived with our loved ones. Who hasn't remembered things that we didn't even know that were in a corner of our memory when thinking about a loved one that is not with us anymore? Memory can be very helpful throughout the most difficult moments...

But it is easy to make the mistake of thinking about memory as something retrospective, and that's the reason for the title of this entry. Let's not think of our memory simply as an archive of past events. Memory is alive, and just like a plant, it needs nourishment. Everyday, we live moments that, some day, will be our memories. That's why we have to make a good use of every second of our lives, we need to be "pro-active" (now that that expression is so in vogue) and think not only in what we have lived, but in what is yet to be lived. Everyday we create new memories... It's like a piggybank in which we put a few cents everyday. Those days, we think that those few pennies are good for nothing ("what am I going to buy with this?"). But one day, something happens and we need all possible help... We go to our piggybank and, what was only a few cents each day, became a much bigger amount that help us with our problem.

Good memories are not the only thing that help us heal a wound as painful as the one left by the death of a loved one, but it is doubtlessly a good ointment to start the cure. Time, family and friends, the so-difficult-to-find positive attitude to face things... All that and more is necessary too. Nobody said it would be easy, but many have said that we are able to do great things, things we don't even believe we can do... When the last grain of sand in the hourglass falls, we shouldn't think that things are over. We only have to be strong enough to turn the glass and start over once again...

Adentro, mar adentro mientras quede un solo remo...

Nuevo año, nueva entrada, nuevos planes, nuevas preocupaciones... Ya se ha dicho siempre que los comienzos nunca fueron fáciles, pero sí que es verdad que unos se toman con más entusiasmo que otros. Todos los que, como yo, aún estudian (especialmente en las humanidades), saben del pánico que puede causar un comienzo inevitable para nosotros: la página en blanco. Sin embargo, otros comienzos –como el del año, o el del curso escolar – vienen cargados de nuevas ideas y planes que deseamos cumplir. Ya sabéis, el típico “este curso voy a estudiar desde el principio, para que no se me acumule” o “este año voy a hacer ejercicio al menos tres veces a la semana”.

Y hablando de comienzos, es la primera vez que he empezado una entrada de blog sin saber de qué voy a escribir. Generalmente, me espero a tener algún tipo de idea o pensamiento que quiera compartir, pero esta vez ha sido mero impulso. ¿Quizás estoy encarando este comienzo de año con ímpetu? Qué sé yo... Lo cierto es que lo he tomado con ganas, a pesar de saber que no va a ser un año fácil en muchos aspectos (pregunta retórica: ¿es que hay años fáciles?). Pienso yo que si nos falta la energía o el coraje desde el primer día, poco lejos vamos a llegar... Esto tiene que ver con una cita que compartí hoy en facebook en honor al día de Martin Luther King Jr. que se celebra hoy en USA: “Si no puedes volar, corre; si no puedes correr, anda; si no puedes andar, arrástrate; pero hagas lo que hagas, no dejes de moverte hacia adelante”. El doctor King tenía toda la razón del mundo, desde mi punto de vista, al decir esto. Miles de años de historia ya nos lo dicen: las cosas no son fáciles, la vida es dura, hay miles de problemas, cosas que no podemos controlar, injusticias... Pero al igual que él, yo creo que esto lo que debe provocar es que sigamos luchando, y no que nos demos por vencidos.

Quizás es fácil para mí decirlo. Por graves que puedan ser mis problemas y los de mi familia y amigos, posiblemente no son nada comparados con otras dificultades mayores que afrontan millones de personas en el planeta día a día. Pero, una vez más, pienso que esto no debe pararme, sino hacerme seguir adelante. Dónde, cuándo y en qué circunstancia nace uno es algo incontrolable. Sin embargo, lo que hace uno en ese lugar, ese tiempo y esa situación sí es decisión nuestra. En la clase de historia y cultura que enseño siempre les digo a mis estudiantes “hay que pensar en contexto”. Es el famoso “yo soy yo y mi circunstancia” de Ortega y Gasset. Lo que hay que hacer, creo yo, es lo máximo que uno pueda con lo que la vida le ha dado. Lamentarnos de que a otros les ha tocado más que a nosotros es una pérdida de tiempo, además de absurdo y bueno para nada.

Lo que sí es cierto es que, tengamos lo que tengamos y sea cual sea nuestra situación, es necesario no olvidar dar importancia a las cosas “pequeñas”. Para cada cual, estas pequeñas cosas pueden ser algo diferente, pero en ellas se encierra la esencia de la felicidad. ¿Algunas de las mías? El sonido de la lluvia, el olor a café, los días fríos con sol, una carta inesperada... Si sólo nos contentamos con lo grande, lo caro, lo material, lo que no está al alcance de todos... pronto olvidaremos lo que de verdad nos hace felices, lo que nos arranca una sonrisa, lo que nos conforta sin saber por qué...

No quiero decir con esto que no debamos soñar con grandes metas, pero sí que sepamos disfrutar el camino que escogemos para llegar a ellas. Siempre está la muy plausible posibilidad de no llegar, así que más nos vale que al menos el trayecto se nos haga dulce. Hay que hacer que cada uno de los granos de arena del reloj de nuestra vida valga la pena...

New year, new entry, new plans, new worries... It has always been said that beginnings are not easy, but certainly we face some with a better attitude than others. All of those that, like me, are still studying (especially in the humanities), know about the fear that an inevitable beginning can cause: the blank page. However, other beginnings – like the new year or the new semester – come along with a bunch of ideas and plans that we want to accomplish. You know, the typical “this semester I’m going to study from the beginning, so that I don’t get overwhelmed at the end” or “this year I’m going to exercise at least three times a week.”

And talking about beginnings, this is the first time that I start writing an entry without knowing what I’m going to be writing about. Normally, I wait until I have some idea or thought that I want to share, but this time it’s been an impulse. Maybe I’m starting this year with energy? Who knows... What’s true is that I was really looking forward to this new year, even though I know it’s not going to be easy in many aspects (rhetorical question: are there easy years at all?). I think that if we lack energy from the first moment, we won’t get very far... This is related to a quote that I shared on facebook today commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s day: “If you can't fly, then run; if you can't run, then walk; if you can't walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” Dr. King was completely right, in my opinion. Thousands of years of history already tell us: things are not easy, life is hard, there are many problems, things that we cannot control, injustice... But, just like him, I think that this should make us keep fighting, and not feeling defeated.

Perhaps it’s easy for me to say this. No matter how serious my problems and the problems of my family are, they’re probably nothing compared to other bigger difficulties that millions of people in the world face everyday. But, once again, I think this shouldn’t stop me, but keep me going. Where, when, and in which circumstance one is born is something that nobody can control. However, what we do in that place, that time, and that situation is indeed our decision. In my class of history and culture, I always tell my students “you have to think in context.” It’s the famous “I’m me and my circumstance” by Ortega y Gasset. What we need to do, in my opinion, is the most out of what life has given us. Complaining because others have more is a waste of time, apart from absurd and good for nothing.

What is actually true is that, no matter what we have and what our situation is, it is necessary not to forget giving importance to “small” things. For each person, they may be different things, but they keep the essence of happiness. Some of mine are the sound of the rain, the smell of coffee, sunny cold days, an unexpected letter... If we are only happy with big and expensive things, material stuff, those things not reachable for the majority... we’ll soon forget what truly makes us happy, what makes us smile, what comforts us not knowing why...

I don’t mean we shouldn’t have dreams and big goals, but I think we should know how to enjoy the path we choose to reach our objectives. There is always a plausible possibility of not reaching that goal, so we better make our way as sweet and nice as possible. One has to make each of the grains of sand in the hourglass of our lives be worth it...

Antes que nada, por supuesto: ¡Feliz Navidad! Ha pasado más tiempo del normal desde que escribí la última entrada, pero es que este semestre ha sido en general una locura, y el final... más aún. Aún así, ya pasó todo: acabaron las clases y el resto del trabajo, se hicieron los exámenes, se entregaron las notas... Y aunque hubo más de un contratiempo, lo importante es que ahora toca relajarse un poco y disfrutar de las vacaciones y de la familia.

Como no puede ser de otra manera, esta entrada tiene que ver con la Navidad. Pero no desde un punto de vista tradicional e idílico, sino más bien desde la perspectiva del tiempo, como siempre me gusta hacer. A lo que me refiero es a cómo cambia nuestra visión de las cosas. Cuando éramos pequeños, la Navidad era claramente sinónimo de felicidad, familia, regalos, comidas, diversión... Y no es que yo haya perdido esa ilusión infantil en estas fiestas, pero es mucho más difícil olvidarse de las cosas no tan ideales y de las situaciones no tan alegres que hay a nuestro alrededor. No sólo me refiero a “cómo está el mundo”, o “la cantidad de cosas malas que hay”, sino a un nivel más individual.

Estas fechas, creo yo, siempre son época de hacer balance, de medir las penas y alegrías que nos trajo el año que se va, de hacer planes para el año que entra y de mantener ilusiones y esperanzas de que todo vaya a mejor. Y, aunque yo sea una optimista nata (por suerte o por desgracia), no dejo de reconocer que cada año parece más difícil mantener una actitud positiva frente a lo que esté por venir.

En estas fechas, no puedo evitar pensar en mi abuela, que ya no está con nosotros; en mi madre, que la echa tanto en falta y que en algunos días también estará echándome de menos a mí cuando vuelva a EEUU; en el abuelo de Anderson, que a pesar de mantener una actitud estoica ante su enfermedad, está pasándolo mal; en Anderson y el resto de su familia, que tienen que vivir una situación tan difícil en unas fechas como éstas... Obviamente, los problemas son problemas todos los días del año, pero cuando lo que a uno le venden en los medios es la idea utópica de un tiempo de paz y felicidad, resultan más palpables las carencias.

Aun así, como dije antes, el optimismo me puede... Y creo que a pesar de TODO, necesitamos tomar esto como una oportunidad de adquirir perspectiva sobre las cosas, de valorar lo que sí tenemos. Si no hubiera malos momentos, los buenos no resultarían tan dulces. Supongo que es ley de vida...

Así que, por difícil que pueda resultar, espero que todos podamos sacar la fuerza y el ánimo en estos días para centrarnos en las cosas buenas y olvidarnos un poco de las malas. El regalo que pido para todos vosotros, aparte de salud – que es lo más importante – es el de la esperanza, para mirar siempre adelante sin miedo y enfrentarnos a lo venidero con la mejor actitud.

First of all: Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! It’s been longer than usual since the last entry, but this semester has been crazy, especially at the end. However, now it’s over: classes and work are over, exams are done, grades are turned in... Even if there was more than one setback, the important thing is that now we can relax and enjoy the holidays and the time with our families.

Of course, this entry will be related to Christmas; but not from a traditional and idyllic point of view, but rather from the perspective of time passing. What I mean is how our view of things changes. When we were little, Xmas was a synonym for happiness, family, presents, meals, fun... And it’s not that I’ve completely lost that feeling, but now it’s more difficult to forget about those not-so-ideal things and those not-so-happy situations around us. I’m not only talking about the situation of the world in general, or the amount of bad things that happen, but rather about more personal things.

During these days, I think, we tend to evaluate things, to measure the good and bad things that the year that is about to end brought, to make plans for the one about to start, and to be hopeful that things will get better. And, even if I was born an optimist (for better or worse...), I can’ deny that every year it seems to get more difficult to keep a positive attitude about what is to come.

During the holidays, I can’t help thinking about my grandma, who is no longer with us; about my mom, who misses her so much and soon will be missing me when I go back to the US; about Anderson’s grandpa, who despite the incredible attitude he has concerning his disease, is going through a very difficult time; about Anderson and his family, who have to endure such a situation in days like these... Obviously, problems are problems every day of the year, but when the media only sell us this utopic idea of a time for peace and happiness, what we lack is even more tangible.

Nevertheless, as I said before, my optimism wins... And in spite of EVERYTHING, we need to take this as an opportunity to gain perspective about things, to give value to what we do have. If there were no bad moments, good ones wouldn’t be so sweet. I guess that’s life...

So, even if it’s difficult, I hope we can all get the strength and the spirit to focus on the good things and forget a little about the bad ones. The present I hope you all get – apart from health, which is the most important thing – is hope, to be able to always look forward without fear and to face what is to come with the best possible attitude.

Hombres de luz, que a los hombres almas les dimos...

La última entrada que escribí se titulaba “Nosce te ipsum”, la famosa inscripción “conócete a ti mismo” en el templo de Apolo en Delfos. Creo que ya todos sabéis de mi afición por las citas y no hace mucho encontré una anónima que decía: “no sabemos quiénes somos hasta que vemos lo que somos capaces de hacer”. Pues bien, algo que yo no estaba segura de poder hacer, finalmente, lo he hecho:¡aprobé mis exámenes! Casi no me lo creo todavía... Estaba tan asustada, con tanto miedo... Sé que sólo son unos exámenes, que si los hubiera suspendido, sólo es cuestión de repetirlos otra vez en un par de meses... Pero puse TANTO esfuerzo en esto, que si hubiera suspendido, no podría haber evitado pensar que perdí un verano, que llevo meses sin ir a España y ver a mi familia para nada... Pero, finalmente, todo salió bien. A todos los que me habéis dado ánimos y apoyado tantísimo durante estos meses (y más...), mil gracias de todo corazón.

Hablando sobre conocerse a uno mismo, es curioso cómo nos definimos dependiendo de la situación. A veces nos presentamos como “la hermana de...”, “la amiga de...”, como “profesora”, como “estudiante de la clase X...”. Vivir en un país extranjero hace que uno de los rasgos definitorios más importantes sea precisamente el de la nacionalidad. La pregunta “¿tú de dónde eres?” es una de las que me encuentro con más frecuencia. ¿Mi respuesta? “De España. De Sevilla, en el sur”. Por eso, cuando hace unas semanas el señor Artur Mas nos dedicó otro más de sus insultos para ensalzar a su tierra, tuve muy claro de qué iba a tratar mi próxima entrada de blog.

Resulta triste que el único medio que parece encontrar este hombre para destacar lo catalán sea tirar por tierra a otras comunidades. Sé que con esto demuestra sencillamente su propia ignorancia, que tonterías como ésta hay que ignorarlas... pero todo el que me conoce un poquito sabe lo orgullosísima que estoy de ser de Sevilla, de Andalucía, del sur. Así que no puedo evitar que me hierva un poquito la sangre en las venas y que me den ganas de darle a este hombre una contestación, en perfecto acento andaluz, de lo inculto y lo irrespetuoso que es.

Al contrario que este personaje, a mí no me hace falta insultar a nadie para saber el valor de mi tierra. A mí tan sólo me hace falta mirar atrás y deleitarme con una interminable lista de personas que consiguieron logros inigualables para Andalucía, para España, y para la humanidad (que por algo lo decimos en nuestro himno). Para alguien que estudia literatura, como yo, es un orgullo que dos premios Nobel de literatura, Juan Ramón Jiménez y Vicente Aleixandre, fueran andaluces. Y sí, ambos hablaban con acento andaluz. Sin embargo, no son ni mucho menos los únicos literatos reconocidos que ha visto nacer mi tierra: Luis de Góngora, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Juan Valera, Luis Cernuda, Francisco Ayala... Todos hablaban andaluz y yo creo que a todos se les entendía bien... Ya lo decía otro andaluz, Antonio Machado: “nosotros los andaluces hablamos el español sin las dificultades propias del idioma”. A lo mejor es que el señor Mas y otros no llegaron a abrir el libro de lengua y literatura de la EGB, porque estos nombres están por todas partes, ya que los andaluces han destacado desde hace siglos...

A lo mejor el señor Mas y sus colegas tampoco abrieron el libro de arte, porque se habría dado cuenta de que las páginas estaban llenas de obras de Romero de Torres, de Murillo, de Velázquez y de Picasso. ¿Y sabrán algo de música? Puede que a lo mejor les suenen nombres como Manuel de Falla o Andrés Segovia...

Antes de que España fuera un país unificado, antes de que España sufriera de movimientos independentistas sin sentido que tan sólo esconden intereses económicos, los primeros pobladores de la península se acumulaban en las costas del sur por su riqueza. Es por eso que aquí, en el sur, en lo que hoy es Andalucía, vimos nacer a dos emperadores romanos, Adriano y Trajano, o a filósofos como Séneca. Dimos luz también a importantes figuras de al-Ándalus, como Maimónides y Averroes, que fueron extremadamente importantes para las ideas filosóficas y sociales de toda península durante la Edad Media. También en la Edad Media se escribe la primera gramática española, redactada por un sevillano: Elio Antonio de Nebrija. Y, ¿cuándo consideran los historiadores que termina la Edad Media? En 1492. ¿Y por qué? Porque de Huelva salen tres carabelas que, a la voz de un sevillano, Rodrigo de Triana, descubren las Américas. Y marchan hacia la nueva tierra muchos andaluces, porque no somos flojos y perezosos como nos pintan, no. Los andaluces hemos emigrado durante siglos buscando una vida mejor y más oportunidades. Y figuras como Bartolomé de las Casas, sevillano, y José Celestino Mutis, gaditano, defendieron y ayudaron a dar autonomía e identidad a las colonias. Quizás más de uno tenga que repasar también el libro de historia...

Pues sí, los andaluces siempre hemos luchado por nuestras ideas. Que se lo digan a Mariana Pineda... Hemos sido innovadores y hemos influenciado a otros por diferentes medios. No hay más que pensar en un malagueño: Francisco Giner de los Ríos. En una época de escolasticismo y cerrazón mental creó la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, donde se educaron los más importantes intelectuales de principios del siglo XX: los hermanos Machado, Juan Ramón, Ortega y Gasset, Gregorio Marañón...

En un mundo ideal, todos esos que nos encasillan en estereotipos de chachas y porteros graciosos, que se ríen de nuestro dialecto (porque sí, es un dialecto), que nos tachan de flojos, de incultos... en ese mundo ideal, esas personas pensarían un poquito antes de hablar y se darían cuenta de que Andalucía es cuna de cultura y de libertad. Y no sólo nos enorgullecemos de quienes somos, sino que no nos hace falta la crítica a otros para valorar lo que tenemos en casa.

Cuando hablo a mis estudiantes de España, enfatizo siempre la riqueza: las diferencias culturales entre norte y sur por las distintas herencias históricas, los tantísimos diferentes tipos de cocina, de costumbres, de acentos, de dialectos... No entiendo por qué muchos toman esto como una excusa para la separación. ¿No es increíble pertenecer a un lugar con TANTO que ofrecer? ¿No es algo de lo que sentirse orgulloso? Coged un puñado de arena en vuestra mano y miradlo. Parece uniforme, ¿verdad? Observad de cerca y veréis como cada grano tiene un color y forma diferente que ayuda a dar un tono particular al conjunto de arena...

The last entry that I wrote was entitled “Nosce te ipsum,” the famous inscription “know yourself” at the temple of Apollo in Delfos. I think you all know about my taste for quotes and not long ago I found an anonymous one that said: “we don’t know who we are until we find out what we are capable of.” Well, something I wasn’t sure of being able to do, eventually, I did it: I passed my exams! I can hardly believe it... I was so scared, with so much fear... I know they are just exams, that failing them would have only meant that I had to retake them in a couple of months... But I put SO MUCH effort into this, that I could not have helped thinking that I had wasted a summer, that I had spent months without going to Spain and seeing my family for nothing... But eventually, everything worked out. To all of you who have been encouraging me and supported me so much during these last months (and more...), a million thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Talking about knowing oneself, it is curious how we define ourselves depending on the situation. Sometimes we introduce ourselves as “the sister of...,” “the friend of...,” as a “teacher,” as “the student in the X class...” Living abroad causes that one of the most important defining traits is precisely the one of nationality. The question “where are you from?” is one of the most frequent ones that I get. My answer? “From Spain. From Sevilla, in the south.” That’s why, when a few weeks ago, when Mr. Artur Mas (a politician form Catalonia in favor of their independence) dedicated us, people from the south, one more insult in order to praise his own native land, I had very clear what was going to be the topic of my next blog entry.

It is pitiful that the only way that this man seems to find to highlight Catalonia is to insult other Spanish regions. I know that, with this, he’s simply showing his own ignorance, that silly remarks like this have to be ignored... but anyone who knows me a little, knows how proud I am of being from Sevilla, from Andalucía, from the south. Thus, I can’t help feeling that my blood boils in my veins, and wanting to reply to this man, with a perfect southern accent, how ignorant and disrespectful he is.

Unlike this guy, I don’t need to insult anyone to know how much my homeland is worth. I simply need to look back and enjoy a never-ending list of people that achieved wonderful things for Andalucía, for Spain, and for humanity (we have this words in our anthem for a reason). For somebody that studies literature, like me, it is wonderful to take pride on knowing that two Nobel Prizes in literature were born in Andalucía: Juan Ramón Jiménez and Vicente Aleixandre. And yes, they both talked with a southern accent. However, they are not at all the only literary figures that my homeland gave birth to: Luis de Góngora, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti, Juan Valera, Luis Cernuda, Francisco Ayala... They all spoke “andaluz” and I think they were pretty well understood... Another Andalusian writer, Antonio Machado, already said so: “we, people from Andalucía, speak Spanish without the difficulties inherent to this language.” Maybe Mr. Mas and others didn’t get to open their Language and Literature book in school, because these names are everywhere, since people from Andalucía have stood out for centuries...

Maybe Mr. Mas and his friends didn’t open their Art book either, because they would have realized that the pages were full of works by Romero de Torres, Murillo, Velázquez and Picasso. Will they know anything about music? Maybe, names like Manuel de Falla or Andrés Segovia sound familiar to them...

Before Spain was a unified country, before Spain suffered from pro-independent movements that only hide economic interests, the first inhabitants of the peninsula gathered around the coasts of Andalucía because of their richness. That is why here were born two Roman emperors, Trajan and Adrian; and philosophers like Seneca. The south also gave birth to important figures in al-Andalus, like Maimonides y Averroes, who were extremely relevant for the philosophical and social ideas across the peninsula during the Middle Ages. Also in the Middle Ages, the first Spanish Grammar is published, and it was written by a Sevilla native: Elio Antonio de Nebrija. And, when do historians consider that the Middle Ages are over? In 1492. Why? Because from Huelva, in the south, three caravels depart and, after Rodrigo de Triana, from Sevilla, screams “land ahoy!,” they discovered America. And many Andalusian people go to the New World, because we are not slothful and lazy, as many depict us. No. We have emigrated for centuries looking for a better life and more opportunities. And figures like Bartolomé de las Casas, from Sevilla, and José Celestino Mutis, from Cadiz, defended and helped giving autonomy and identity to the colonies. Maybe some people also need to review their history book...

So yes, we Andalusians have always fought for our ideas. Just think of Mariana Pineda... We have been innovative and we have influenced other by different means. Just think in a Malaga native: Francisco Giner de los Ríos. In a time of scholasticism and narrow-mindedness, he created the institute of Free Teaching, where the most important intellectuals of the early 20^th century were educated: the Machado brothers, Juan Ramón, Ortega y Gasset, Gregorio Marañón...

In an ideal world, those that pigeonhole us within stereotypes of housemaids and funny caretakers, that laugh at our dialect (because yes, it is a dialect), that say that we are lazy, uneducated... in that ideal world, those people would think a little bit before talking and they would realize that Andalucía is the birthplace of culture and freedom. And we not only take pride on who we are, we also don’t need to criticize other others in order to give value to what we have at home.

When I talk to my students about Spain, I always emphasize its richness: the cultural differences between north and south because of their diverse historic heritage, the so many different types of cuisines, of traditions, of accents, dialects... I don’t understand why many people take this as an excuse to justify separation. Isn’t it wonderful to come from a place with SO much to offer? Isn’t it something to feel proud of? Take a handful of sand and look at it. It seems uniform, right? Take a very close look at it and you’ll see how each grain has a different color and shape that helps giving a particular hue to that handful of sand...

Es un poco tarde ya, pero llevo todo el fin de semana estudiando casi sin parar y ahora me espera una semana de trabajo bien intensa, así que mi relajación nocturna va a ser “bloguear” un poco. Lo primero que quiero hacer es daros las gracias de todo corazón a todos por leer el blog consistentemente, por mandarme emails con vuestros comentarios, por los ánimos que me dais para seguir: GRACIAS. Y de hecho es el agradecimiento precisamente el hilo principal de esta nueva entrada.

La gran mayoría sabéis que estoy en puertas de los que son, posiblemente, los exámenes más importantes de mi carrera. Una vez pasados, ya “sólo” me queda escribir la tesis… Muchos pensaréis que es la defensa de la tesis la que debería ocupar el primer puesto de importancia, pero no. Una vez escrita la tesis, si tu director cree que ya estás listo, la defensa es una mera formalidad ;) Sin embargo, estos exámenes que tengo ya tan cerca son decisivos. Sé que si no paso, no es el final del mundo, los puedo repetir en poco tiempo. Es sólo que quiero quitarme esto de encima desesperadamente… He trabajado y sacrificado mucho este verano preparando mis lecturas. Me he quedado todo el verano en Estados Unidos, por lo que me he perdido cosas como la boda de una de mis mejores amigas y, por encima de todo, pasar tiempo con mi familia.

Cuando uno se encuentra en estos momentos decisivos de la vida, no hay NADA que pueda igualar el apoyo y el ánimo de amigos y familia. Hace muchos años encontré una cita que decía: “Tenemos que llegar a conocernos tanto, que empecemos también a conocer a los demás. En cada persona que se cruza en nuestro camino hay algo de nosotros mismos”. Esa reciprocidad entre individuos, casi complicidad, me parece una de las cosas más hermosas sobre las que uno puede pensar. La vida, como ya han dicho muchos, es un camino en el que nos vamos conociendo a nosotros mismos poco a poco… es un proceso de autodescubrimiento desde el primer hasta el último día. Y es la misma vida, sabia maestra, la que nos pone junto a personas que, de un modo u otro, nos ayudan a descubrir algo nuevo.

Mi madre siempre me ha dicho que “he nacido con estrella”, y tiene toda la razón del mundo. Siempre me he considerado una persona extremadamente afortunada, en especial por la gente que siempre me ha rodeado. Donde quiera que haya ido, he encontrado buenas personas que me han ayudado, cuidado, aconsejado… siempre. Es imposible mantener contacto constante con toda la gente a la que queremos; yo trato de hacerlo lo máximo posible, y aún así no creo que sea suficiente… y sin embargo, hace un par de semanas por ejemplo, por mi cumpleaños, más de cien personas (sin contar familia) me mandaron sus mejores deseos para ese día. Es difícil sentirse más especial y afortunada. Más de uno podrá pensar que peco de orgullo diciendo esto, pero lo que siento es completamente lo contrario: humildad.

En estos días en los que estoy tan nerviosa y tengo tanta falta de seguridad en mí misma, mis amigos y, en especial, mi madre y mi hermano, me animan como nadie y tienen una fe en mí que yo misma no encuentro. Mi madre me repite “tú vales mucho…. tú puedes hacerlo… estoy muy orgullosa de ti”… Y yo casi me siento mal por que ella piense que, sea lo que sea lo que yo haya hecho, lo he hecho yo sola. No es así… NADA de lo que he hecho ha sido sola, siempre he tenido ayuda. Sin unos padres que me apoyan en todo, no creo que hubiera hecho la mitad de las cosas que he hecho en la vida. Sin un hermano que está detrás mía en cada paso, no habría tenido la seguridad de hacer nada. Sin una familia que siempre me ha demostrado su amor, su confianza, su fe en mí, nunca me habría sentido capaz de nada. Sin unos amigos que, a pesar de la distancia y las largas ausencias, siguen estando ahí para mí en todo momento, no habría tenido motivación para seguir adelante. No quiero hacer de esta entrada una ñoñería ni un discurso “pasteloso”, pero no puedo evitar sentir la necesidad de haceros saber que valoro en extremo todo lo que me dais, que estoy segura de que es más de lo que merezco.

Cuando empecé a escribir este blog, tenía muchas reservas. Pensaba que nadie lo iba a leer, o que la gente pensaría que son tonterías o que soy una cursi… Han pasado menos de cuatro meses y cada día recibo más apoyo y comentarios de todos vosotros que me hacen pensar que, quizás, no es tal tontería. Por esa dosis de confianza que me habéis dado, he pensado que qué mejor forma de agradeceros que dedicando esta entrada a todos los que, desde diferentes partes del mundo, habéis hecho que me sienta un poco más comprendida, con menos miedo a expresar lo que pienso y siento, y más cerca de cada uno de vosotros.

Creo que aquí voy a dejar esta entrada, un poco más corta que de costumbre. La próxima vez que escriba, espero que sea con buenas noticias sobre mis exámenes. Si no puede ser, bueno, pues os escribiré para deciros mi nueva fecha ;) En fin, peores cosas hay en la vida que tener que repetir una prueba… pero pocas cosas hay mejores que tener tanta gente con la que compartir penas y alegrías. Ya se sabe que un solo grano de arena no es nada, pero muchos pueden formar la más hermosa de las playas…

It’s kind of late now, but I’ve been studying all weekend, almost without stopping, and an intense week full of work is waiting for me, so my relax time is going to be for blogging a little. First of all, I wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for reading the blog consistently, for sending me emails with your comments, for the encouraging words to keep going: THANK YOU. And, actually, gratitude is going to be the central idea in this entry.

Most of you know that I’m about to take, probably, the most important exams in my career. Once I pass them, I “only” have to write my dissertation… Many of you would think that it’s my dissertation defense the one that should be number one in the rank of importance, but not really. Once the dissertation is written, if your director thinks that you are ready, the defense I just a formality ;) However, these exams that are so close now are decisive. I know that if I don’t pass it won’t be the end of the world, I can take them again in not too long. It’s just that I desperately want to get rid of this… I’ve worked and sacrificed a lot during this summer preparing my readings. I stayed in the States all summer, which made me miss things like the wedding of one of my best friends and, especially, spend time with my family.

When you find yourself in these decisive moments in life, there is NOTHING equal to the support and encouragement of friends and family. Many years ago I found a quote that said: “We have to get to know ourselves so well that we start to know others, too. In each person that comes into our lives, there is something about ourselves.” That reciprocity among individuals, almost complicity, seems to me one of the most beautiful things one can think about. Life, as many have said, is a path in which we get to know ourselves little by little… it is a self-discovery process from the first to the last day. And it’s life itself, wise teacher, what brings us close to people who, in one way or another, help us discover something new.

My mother has always told me that I was born “with the luck of the devil”, and she’s completely right. I’ve always considered myself an extremely fortunate person, especially for the people I have around me. Wherever I went, I always found good people who have helped me, taken care of me, given me advice… always. It is impossible to keep in constant touch with all the people that we love; I try as much as I can, and I still don’t think it’s enough… and, nevertheless, a couple of weeks ago, for example, for my birthday, more than a hundred people (not counting family) sent me their best wishes for that day. It is difficult to feel more special and lucky. Some people may think I’m being arrogant, but what I feel is precisely the opposite: humility.

In these days in which I’m so nervous and I have such a lack of confidence, my friends, and especially, my mom and brother, encourage me more than anyone and have great faith in me that I can’t have myself. My mom tells me all the time “you’re worth a lot… you can do it… I’m very proud of you…” And I almost feel bad that she thinks that, whatever it is I have done, I’ve done it myself. It’s not at all like that… NOTHING that I have done it’s been without help. Without parents that support me in everything, I don’t think I would have done half of whatever I’ve done in my life. Without a brother that was behind me every step of the way, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do anything. Without a family that has showed me their love, trust, faith in me, I would have never felt able to do anything. Without friends that, despite the distance and the long absences, are always there for me in any moment, I wouldn't have had the motivation to keep going. I don’t want to make a cheesy discourse out of this entry, but I can’t help feeling the need to let you know that I do really appreciate everything that you give me, which I’m sure is much more than I deserve.

When I started writing this blog, I had many reservations. I thought that nobody would read it, or that people would think it was silly or that I’m lame… It’s been less than four months and everyday I receive more support and comments from all of you that make me think that, perhaps, this is not so silly. For that dose of confidence that you have given me, I thought that the best way to thank you would be dedicating this entry to all of you who, from different parts of the world, have made me feel a little more understood, with less fear to express what I think and feel, and closer to each one of you.

I think I’m going to stop this entry here, making it a little shorter than usual. Next time I write, I hope I can give you good news about my exams. If I can’t, well, I’ll let you know my new exam date ;) In any case, there are much worse things in life than having to retake a test… but there are few better things than having so many people with whom one can share sorrows and joys. You know, a single grain of sand is nothing, but many of them can create the most beautiful beach…

Definirse es reducirse

Y de nuevo, mucho tiempo sin escribir… El verano se está pasando volando, casi no me puedo creer que ya estemos en agosto. Son muchas las cosas que tengo y he tenido en la cabeza últimamente (aparte de mis santas lecturas para los exámenes), y, una vez más, en mis huracanes mentales, les pongo un lacito a todas y les busco un punto común. El ojo del huracán.

¿Algunas de estas tantas cosas? Familia, distancia, enfermedad, muerte, identidad, búsqueda… Algunas relacionadas entre sí, otras más distantes. Muchas veces un pensamiento simple me lleva a otro, y a otro, y a otro… y en cuestión de unos minutos pienso “¿cómo he llegado yo a esta idea?”; y me paso otro rato recorriendo mis mismos pensamientos en sentido inverso para llegar al origen. Estoy segura de que esto es algo que nos ocurre a muchos, pero a mí es que esta cabecita que Dios me ha dado no me para nunca… A esto se le une la monotonía de mis días, en los que si hay algún cambio, es siempre el mismo cambio; y si hay alguna novedad, es sencillamente el orden en el que las cosas monótonas ocurren. Y es mi día a día, mi llevar aquí en “mi colina” todo el verano, que me hace pensar más en lo que extraño: mi familia, mi casa, mi tierra… Sólo hago repetirme que en diciembre vuelvo a Sevilla, a mis padres, mi hermano, mis amigos… Pero hay también cosas que extraño que ya nunca las voy a tener. Últimamente he pensado mucho mucho en mi abuela… en cómo se fue, estando yo tan lejos… No es un pensamiento aleatorio; de hecho, pienso en ella prácticamente a diario, pero estos días han sido diferentes… pero, como digo, no es aleatorio: el abuelo de Andy está muy muy malito, el hermano de mi abuela murió hace unos días… y todo eso me ha hecho pensar incluso más. Y no me quiero obsesionar hablando de muerte, que bastante presente la he tenido siempre y demasiado miedo me ha dado como para encima dedicarle una entrada de blog; pero sí que es cierto que ha sido una de las ideas más presentes que he tenido en estas semanas… ¿Y cómo relaciono esto con las demás cosas que mencioné antes? ¿Qué tiene que ver la muerte con la identidad? Hay que seguir pensando…

El miedo a la muerte, creo yo, es uno de los más comprensibles que una persona puede tener. Pero es que yo, aunque esto no sean noticias para el que me conozca un poquito, soy una cobarde nata. Yo creo que si soy responsable es más por miedo que por carácter. Me aterra que algo pueda ir mal, me da miedo lo desconocido, el tener una situación inesperada que no puedo resolver o controlar… ¿Y qué hay más desconocido, aleatorio e incontrolable que la muerte? La muerte es, en el fondo, sólo una cosa más de la que no sabemos nada. Para el que tenga la suerte de haber nacido con la fe suficiente como para creer en la certeza que algunas religiones ofrecen sobre lo que hay después de morir, puede que sea más llevadero. Para los que estamos en esta desesperación de la incertidumbre, de querer creer pero no poder, como decía Unamuno, para nosotros es más complicado…

Qué problema éste, el de las estructuras binarias que inundan el mundo: vivo/muerto, hombre/mujer, sí/no… Por definición vamos a estar siempre en un lado, lo cual nos incapacita para saber cualquier cosa del otro. Y eso me lleva al tema de la búsqueda y la identidad. Como hijos de la Ilustración (que parece que queda muy lejos, pero 200 años en historia no son nada), somos muy dados a definir, a poner etiquetitas a todo. Si pudiéramos, meteríamos en botecitos de cristal cada elemento de la creación y les pondríamos su nombre en una etiqueta (poco más o menos lo que supone que hizo Dios, mostrándole a Adán cada cosa para que la nombrara). Pero, como ya dijo alguien, definir es reducir. Las palabras, creación humana y, por ende, imperfecta, no son suficientes… Todos vivimos, todos experimentamos en primera persona lo que es la VIDA. Sin embargo, se va uno al diccionario y lee:

Vida:

1. Fuerza o actividad interna sustancial, mediante la que obra el ser que la posee.

2. Estado de actividad de los seres orgánicos.

3. Unión del alma y del cuerpo.

4. Espacio de tiempo que transcurre desde el nacimiento de un animal o un vegetal hasta su muerte.

Y así siguen los sabios de la Real Academia hasta un total de 20 definiciones para esta palabra. Sin embargo, las leemos, una tras otra, y son sólo palabras… No están siquiera a años luz de expresar lo que VIDA significa verdaderamente…

Y aquí es donde lo uno todo, todas esas ideas de muerte, de identidad y de mil cosas más que me pasan por la mente: nuestra limitación. Estamos tan limitados desde nuestro primer día de existencia, que es casi cruel… Estar expuesto a tanto mundo con tan pocas herramientas… Mientras vivamos, no sabremos lo que es la muerte; mientras necesitemos palabras, no vamos a poder comprender lo que son verdaderamente las cosas… El ser humano es, en verdad, una mezcla tan compleja de tantas cosas… Y esa misma complejidad que nos hace uno de los elementos más increíbles de la creación, es precisamente lo que nos limita.

Escribo. Paro. Releo lo escrito. Y, una vez más, estas palabras que aquí veo no alcanzan a describir lo que hay en mi cabeza… Puede que esa sea la belleza de la literatura: tantos géneros que existen, tantos libros que se han escrito… Parece ser un desesperado y sublime grito de auxilio, un intento constante de los hombres de llegar a describir algo que todos vemos, pero nadie puede tocar, algo que lo convierta en real. Y no sólo la literatura: las artes en general parecen ser la esperanza humana, el empeño continuo de querer expresar algo y descubrirlo en su esencia.

Puede que algún día encontremos la clave para solucionar todos estos dilemas. Hasta entonces, tendremos que seguir intentado lo que decía mi querido Unamuno: “hay que sentir el pensamiento y pensar el sentimiento”, seguir intentando ver el otro lado, incluso sabiendo que está en sombras a nuestros ojos; seguir girando el reloj de arena con la esperanza de algún día entender ambos lados.

And, again, a long time without writing… Summer is going by very quickly, I can’t believe we are already in August. There are, and there have been, many things in my head lately (apart from my dear readings for my exams), and, once again, in my mental hurricanes, I gather them together, I tie them, and I look for a common spot. The eye of the hurricane.

Which things? Family, distance, sickness, death, identity, search… Some are related among them, some are not. Many times, a thought takes me to another one, and another one, and another… and in minutes I start thinking “how did I get to this idea?”; and I take some more time to go back, thinking in reverse, to reach the origin. I’m sure this happens to many of us, but it’s just that this head of mine never stops working… To this we have to add the monotony of my days, in which changes are always the same; if there is anything new, is the order in which my daily routine happens… And it’s my day by day, my being here in “my Hill” all summer, that makes me think about the things I miss: my family, my home, my homeland… I’m always repeating to myself that I’ll be back in Sevilla in December, with my parents, my brother, my friends… But there are also things that I miss that I’m never going to have anymore. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my grandmother… about how she left, with me being so far away… It’s not a random thought; in fact, I think about her daily, but these days have been different… but, as I say, this is not random: Andy’s grandpa is very very sick, my grandma’s brother died a few days ago… and all that made me think even more. And I really don’t want to talk too much about death, I’ve had enough with having it always quite present and being too scared of it as to also dedicate an entry of my blog to it; but it’s true that it’s been one of the most constant ideas that I’ve had during these past weeks… And how do I relate all this with the rest of the ideas I mentioned before? What does death have to do with identity? We have to keep thinking…

Fear of death is, in my opinion, one of the most understandable fears that a person can have. It’s just that I am, and this is not news for those who know me a little, a natural born coward. I think that if I’m responsible, it’s more out of fear than out of character. I’m scared of things going wrong, of the unknown, of facing an unexpected situation that I can’t fix or control… And is there anything more unknown, random and uncontrollable than death? Death is, in the end, just one more thing about which we don’t know anything. For those who are lucky enough to have been born with faith to believe in the certainty that some religions offer about what’s after death, it may be easier. For those of us who live in the desperation of uncertainty, of wanting to believe but being unable to, like Unamuno said, for us is more complicated…

What a problem, this one of the binary structures that flood the world: alive/dead, man/woman, yes/no… By definition, we are always going to be on one side, which disables us from getting to know anything about the other. And that takes me to the topics of search and identity. As good children of the Enlightenment (that seems to be far away, but 200 years in history are nothing), we are very prone to defining, to labeling everything. If we could, we would bottle every single element of creation and we would write its name in a label (pretty much what God supposedly did, showing Adam every thing so that he would name it). However, as someone already said, to define is to reduce. Words, human creation and, thus, imperfect, are not enough… We all live, we all experience in the first person what LIFE is. Nevertheless, one goes to the dictionary and reads:

Life:

1. Strength or substantial internal activity, by means of which the being that possesses it acts.

2. State of activity of organic beings.

3. Union of body and soul.

4. Space of time between the birth and the death of an animal or plant.

And the wise men of the Academy keep going this way until the reach a total of 20 definitions for this word. However, we read them, one after the other, and they are just words… They are not even light years away from expressing what LIFE means…

And here is where I bring all these ideas of death, identity and more together: our limitation. We are so limited from our very first day of existence that it’s almost cruel… Being exposed to so much world with so few tools… As long as we live, we’ll never know what death is; as long as we have words, we won’t be able to understand what things truly are… Human beings are, truly, such a complex mix of so many things… And that same complexity that makes us one of the most extraordinary elements of creation is precisely what limits us.

I write. I stop. I reread what I have written. And once again, these words that I read here don’t get to describe what’s on my mind… Maybe that’s the beauty of literature: so many genres, so many books that have been written… It seems to be a desperate and sublime call for help, a constant attempt of men to get to describe something that we can all see, but nobody can touch, something that would make it real. And not only literature: the arts in general seem to be the human hope, the determination of wanting to express something and discover its essence.

Maybe one day we’ll find the key to solve all these dilemmas. Until then, we will have to keep trying what my dear Unamuno said: “we have to feel the thought and think the feeling”, keep trying to see the other side, even knowing that it’s in the shadows in our eyes; keep turning the hourglass with the hope of, one day, understanding both sides.

Lost in translation

Bueno, bueno… ¡por fin de vuelta! Llevo queriendo escribir semanas, pero he estado MUY liada… Una de las cosas que más tiempo me ha quitado ha sido precisamente una traducción que me encargaron. Mi primera reacción ante el proyecto fue “¡Por supuesto!”. Una nueva oportunidad, un poco de dinero extra… Sin embargo, no pensé en mi ya antigua relación amor-odio con las traducciones. Ya dijo alguien que cada idioma es una forma de entender el mundo; pues bien, si hablando el mismo idioma tenemos problemas al tratar de entendernos, ya se puede uno imaginar lo que ocurre cuando tratamos de expresar lo que OTRA persona ha dicho en OTRO idioma: caos.

Si es verdad que todo esto es por castigo de Dios por tratar de construir la famosa Torre de Babel, la verdad es que nos jorobó a base de bien… La referencia religiosa me recuerda de hecho a San Jerónimo. Allá en el siglo IV, cuando le encargaron la traducción de la Biblia al latín, el pobre hombre ya se halló con el eterno dilema: ¿traducir palabra por palabra o sentido por sentido? A esto se le añade la complicación siguiente: la Biblia, escrita en tres idiomas diferentes, por diferentes autores, muchos de los cuales ni siquiera dominaban el idioma en el que escribían, tenía que ser traducida al latín, lengua que ya nadie hablaba de forma nativa. En mi opinión, una receta perfecta para crear algo completamente diferente del original… En fin, que las traducciones no son fáciles.

Y esto me hace pensar en la cantidad de veces que nos encontramos palabras que, sencillamente, NO se pueden traducir… Hace un par de años, la basílica de la Macarena de Sevilla decidió renovar su museo. Con la intención de hacerlo más interactivo e internacional, decidieron poner tanto en español como en inglés todas las explicaciones que se ofrecían: tanto resúmenes históricos que contextualizaban lo que se muestra en el museo, como explicaciones de cada uno de los objetos que se exponen. ¿Traductora de dichos textos? Servidora. Y a ver, señores, cómo le explican ustedes a un yanqui o a un británico blanquito con colores en las mejillas y sandalias con calcetines, lo que es una bambalina, un respiradero o un llamador… Y que el hermano mayor de una hermandad no es el Big brother, que los nazarenos no son del Ku Klux Klan… Bueno, explicar se puede (más o menos), pero el espacio necesario no es poco… Y en las breves explicaciones que se encuentran en un museo, lo último que sobra es espacio. Al menos un libro da la opción de notas a pie de página, ¿pero un museo? Pues ahí estaba yo, haciendo lo que podía, pidiéndole ayuda al pobre Anderson que, ni católico ni español, hizo todo lo posible por entender de qué narices le estaba hablando para ayudarme a buscar la palabra adecuada… Tras muchos videos, fotos, y explicaciones culturales, el resultado fue lo más exacto posible, en mi opinión. Pero aun así, la frustración de no tener una palabra exacta, perdura.

Lo mismo ocurre con el inglés traducido al español. Ni qué decir tiene que, el castellano, es una lengua con muuuuucho más color (y arte) que el inglés, pero sí que es cierto que esta gente tienen palabras para todo… No tienen tanta variedad en un mismo campo, el español gana por goleada en eso y en sinónimos que sólo varían unos de otros en pequeños detalles; pero, ¿palabras específicas para CUALQUIER COSA? Ahí el inglés nos puede… Además, tienen esta bendita posibilidad de crear verbos de nombres. El pobre hablante de español tiene que “buscar en google” o “mirar en google”; el angloparlante ha creado el verbo “to google” para esto, y se queda tan contento. Lo mismo con Wikipedia, al hispanoparlante que no sabe algo, le dice su amigo: “búscalo en Wikipedia”. Tres… largas… palabras… ¿En inglés? “Wiki it”. Ahí, en un plis-plas. Ni te enteras de lo que te ha dicho el paisano, ha sido rápido como el rayo…

Y entre ambos mundos estamos los “exiliados” de nuestra querida España (u otro país de habla hispana) que vivimos en cualquiera de las partes del mundo donde se habla inglés (aunque me imagino que también ocurre con otros idiomas): que ya no hablamos ni lo uno ni lo otro. Yo hago todo lo posible por no convertirme en una de esas personas que, fuera de España por mucho tiempo, acaba hablando raro y usando palabras incorrectamente, sólo porque se parecen a las inglesas. Cada mes, yo pago rent por mi casa, que NO es renta, es alquiler. Y cada año, tengo que rellenar mis taxes, que no son tasas, son impuestos. ¿Cuál es la ironía de todo esto? Que mi puñetero blog está en dos idiomas y, ahora mismo, escribiendo lo que os estoy escribiendo, pienso “¿cómo narices voy a traducir todo al inglés?”. El cuento de nunca acabar…

Estos problemas de traducción me hacen pensar en grandes eventos como reuniones de la ONU, y cosas así. Si a los políticos no los entiende nadie en su propia lengua, Dios mío de mi vida lo que deben pensar de ellos los representantes de otros países… Esos que tan sólo pueden confiar ciegamente lo que le dice un intérprete a través de un pinganillo. Intérprete que, por mucha formación, estudios y práctica que tenga, es humano y tiene que ser exacto y fiel a lo que sea que diga quien esté hablando. Y si se confunde o se le escapa algo… ¡hala!, conflicto armado, ruptura de negociaciones, bla bla bla… Y todo porque donde dije digo, digo Diego… (¿“Where I said I said, I say Diego”? Véis, si es que no hay solución…).

Al mismo tiempo, la cuestión de los idiomas tiene sus ventajas (aparte de la obvia de poder ir a más sitios y entenderse con la gente). Si, como decía antes, cada idioma es una forma de entender el mundo, aquellos con varios idiomas tienen una mayor perspectiva de las cosas, una visión más amplia. Y yo soy desafortunada por sólo tener el inglés, pero conozco a varias personas que tienen tres, cuatro, o más idiomas… Para mí, una de las cualidades más envidiables…

En fin, que esto de los idiomas y las traducciones es complejo… Pero también “engancha”: es como una especie de puzzle, o rompecabezas. Queremos encontrar la pieza específica que encaja a la perfección en el hueco y no paramos de buscar hasta que damos con ella… Es buscar un grano de arena específico en una playa (o en un reloj… ;) ).

Well, well, well… back at last! I’ve been wanting to write for weeks, but I’ve been VERY busy… One of the things that took me more time has actually been a translation that I had to make. My first reaction to the project was “Of course!” A new opportunity, some extra money… However, I was not thinking about my old love-hate relationship with translations. Someone said once that each language is a different way to understand the world; well, if speaking the same language we already have problems to understand each other, one can only image what happens when we try to express what ANOTHER person has said in ANOTHER language: chaos.

If it’s true that this is all God’s punishment for trying to build the Tower of Babel, He really messed it up for us… The religious reference actually reminds me of San Jeronimo. Back in the 4^th century, when he was assigned the translation of the Bible into Latin, the poor fellow found himself wondering about the eternal dilemma: translating word by word or meaning by meaning? To this, we need to add the following complication: the Bible, written in three different languages, by several authors, many of which were not even fluent in the language in which they wrote, had to be translated to Latin, a language that nobody spoke natively anymore. In my opinion, the perfect recipe to create something completely different from the original… Oh well, translations are not easy.

And this makes me think about the amount of times that we find words that, simply, CANNOT be translated… A couple of years ago, the basilica of la Macarena in Sevilla decided to remodel its museum. With the objective of making it more interactive and international, they decided to write both in Spanish and in English all the explanations that they offer: historic summaries that give context to what is in the museum, and descriptions of each of the objects that are displayed. Who was the translator for these? Exactly: me. And, let’s see, how would you explain to a “yankee” of a whitey British man with pink cheeks and sandals and socks, what is a bambalina, a respiradero, or a llamador… And that the hermano mayor of a brotherhood is not the “Big brother”, and that nazarenos are not from the Ku Klux Klan…* Well, one can explain these (more or less), but the necessary space for it is not little… And in those brief explanations that can be found in museums, last thing to spare is space. In a book, at least, one has the option of footnotes, but a museum? So there I was, doing as much as could, asking for help to my poor Anderson who, neither catholic or Spanish, did as much as he could to understand whatever the heck I was talking about to help me look for the right word… After many videos, photos, and cultural explanations, the result is as exact as it could be, in my opinion. Nevertheless, the frustration of not having an exact word, remains.

Same thing happens with English translated into Spanish. I don’t have to say that Spanish is a language much more colorful than English, but it is also true that these people have words for everything… They don’t have as much of a variety per field as we do, Spanish wins that battle easily, as well as the one of synonym words that only differ from each other slightly; but, specific words for ANYTHING? English wins that one… Also, they have that wonderful ability to create verbs from nouns. The poor Spanish speaker has to “look for something in google” or “check in google;” the English speaker has created to verb “to google” for this, and that’s it. Same thing with Wikipedia; if a Spanish speaker doesn’t know something, a friend may say: “search in Wikipedia.” Three… long… words… In English? “Wiki it.” There you go, in a heartbeat. You almost couldn’t hear what the guy said, it was fast as lightning…

And in between those two worlds it’s us, the “exiles” of our dear Spain (or any other Spanish-speaking country) that live in any of those parts of the world where English is spoken (although I guess it also happens with other languages): we don’t speak one or the other anymore. I try my best not to become one of those people who, after being abroad for a long time, ends up speaking in an odd way, using the wrong words just because they sound like the English ones. Each month I pay “rent”, which is NOT renta, but alquiler. And each year I file my “taxes”, which are not tasas, but impuestos. What’s the irony in all this? That my freaking blog is in two languages and, right now, as I write, I’m thinking “how the heck am I going to translate all this into English?” A never-ending story…

These translation problems make me think of big events like the UN meetings, and things like that. If nobody understands politicians, even in their own language, oh God, what may the representatives of other countries think of them…? Those who can only trust blindly what they hear the interpreters say through their earpieces. Interpreters who, no matter how much education or practice they may have, are human and they have to be exact and faithful to what the person talking says. And if they make a mistake or something escapes to them… bang!, an armed conflict, a breaking of negotiations, blah blah blah… And all because donde dije digo, digo Diego… (Spanish idiom, not sure how to translate… You see??? Translation is not easy!!).

At the same time, the question of languages also has advantages (apart from the obvious one of going to other countries and being able to understand people). If, as I said before, each language is a way to understand the world, those who know several languages have a better perspective of things, a broader view. And I’m not that lucky, since I only know English, but I have friends that know three, four, or more languages… To me, an enviable ability…

So, yeah, this thing of languages and translations is quite complex… But it also grips you: it’s like a puzzle. We want to find the specific piece that fits perfectly in the space and we don’t stop until we find it… It’s looking for a specific grain of sand at the beach (or in an hourglass… ;) ).

Decía Unamuno: “procuremos más ser padres de nuestro porvenir que hijos de nuestro pasado”. No sé si será porque siempre me ha gustado mucho como escritor, pero veo mucha verdad en esta frase. Y lo más curioso es la cantidad de cosas a las que se puede aplicar…

No quiero, ni mucho menos, convertir este blog en una columna de opinión sobre política, pero una de las cosas con las que es fácil relacionar esta frase es con las opiniones que he visto de mucha gente acerca de la reciente victoria del PP. No soy yo un animal muy político, pero supongo que si tuviera que definir mis tendencias, serían más bien socialistas. Sin embargo, no me enfada ni me molesta que haya sido un partido de derechas el que haya ganado las elecciones. De hecho, creo que es algo bueno: debe existir un balance. No creo que ningún país deba estar siempre bajo un mismo tipo de gobierno. Con el tiempo, todo se corrompe… Es bueno, yo diría necesario, que el poder cambie de manos. El problema es que en España tenemos esta tendencia a ser “hijos de nuestro pasado” y hablar de la derecha es pensar en “fachas”, dictadura y sufrimiento. Es cierto que, por desgracia, tenemos una historia negra de cuarenta años de represión y cosas peores que no se debe olvidar; pero también es verdad que no podemos dejar que algo que ocurrió hace tantos años siga corrompiendo nuestra imagen de la realidad. Hay que empezar a mirar adelante, y no sólo atrás. Hay que quitarse de los ojos y de la mente los estereotipos y empezar a ser un poco más críticos y tener nuestras propias ideas, y no dejar que la memoria histórica sea la que decida nuestro futuro. ¿Va a solucionar el PP los problemas que tiene España? Posiblemente no todos y ciertamente no de la noche a la mañana. Sin embargo, pienso que hay que dar un voto de confianza y ver esto como aquel necesario cambio del que todos hablaban y por el que tantos se han manifestado.

No obstante, dejando la política aparte, la cita de Unamuno es una de las muchas cosas que me ha tenido pensando en el tema del tiempo esta semana. Acabo de terminar de leer Amor y pedagogía, novela precisamente de Unamuno también. El vasco estaba ciertamente obsesionado con los temas de la muerte, la religión y la inmortalidad y expresa en sus obras la necesidad de CREAR como única forma de vencer a la muerte. ¿Y cuál es la creación última para perdurar en el tiempo? Los hijos… Ya lo decía Shakespeare en el soneto XII:

Cuando cuento las horas que sumergen

El día airoso en noche aborrecible,

Cuando veo marchitas las violetas

O argentados de blanco rizos negros,

Cuando encuentro desnuda la arboleda

Que fue dosel umbrío de rebaño,

O en gavillas el verde del estío

Y erizado de barbas entrecanas,

Evoco inquisitivo tu belleza,

Que al fin vencerá el tiempo ineluctable,

Pues gracias y dulzuras se corrompen

Y mueren mientras otras proliferan.

¿Y por qué la referencia a Shakespeare? No es pedantería, sino una forma más de demostrar que hace 500 años, en otro país, en una época completamente diferente a la de Unamuno y a la nuestra, existían las mismas ideas y preocupaciones… Y eso me lleva al ahora, a nuestro presente. Creo que TODOS, jóvenes y mayores, hemos escuchado alguna vez “es que la juventud de ahora…”, “en mis tiempos las cosas estaban mucho mejor…”. Yo misma me he encontrado pensando y diciendo cosas por el estilo, ahora ya que me acerco a la treintena. Pues, para muestra un botón:

"Nuestra juventud es decadente e indisciplinada, los jóvenes ya no escuchan los consejos de los viejos, el fin de los tiempos está cerca." (Caldeo, 2000 antes de Cristo)

En fin… que al final va a ser verdad lo del carácter cíclico del tiempo y de la vida misma. Somos siempre diferentes y siempre los mismos… Sin embargo, como “nadie escarmienta por cabeza ajena” (hoy el día va de citas y refranes…), tenemos que pasar por el proceso para aprender las mismas cosas que otros antes que nosotros ya aprendieron y, si tenemos suerte, podemos aportar algo más. Nuestro pequeño granito de arena para el gran reloj…

The Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno said: “let’s try to be parents of our future rather than children of our past.” I don’t know if it’s just that I’ve always really liked him as a writer, but I see a lot of truth in this quote. And the most curious part is the amount of things to which we can apply it…

I don’t want to turn this blog into a political opinion column, but it’s easy to relate this quote to the opinions and reactions that I’ve seen in a lot of people in Spain concerning the victory of the right-wing party (PP). I’m not exactly a “political animal”, but I guess that if I had to define my tendencies, they would be rather liberal. However, it does not upset or bother me at all that the PP has won the elections. In fact, I think it’s a good thing: there must be a balance. I don’t think any country should be always under the same type of government. With time, everything becomes corrupted… It’s good, I’d say necessary, that power goes to different hands. The problem is that in Spain we have this tendency towards being “children of our past” and talking about the Right means thinking about fascists, dictatorship and suffering. It’s true that, unfortunately, we have a black history of forty years of repression and even worse things that we must not forget; but it’s also true that we can’t let something that happened so long ago to keep corrupting our image of reality. We have to start looking forward, and not only looking back. We have to take away from our eyes and minds those stereotypes and start being a little bit more critical and have our own ideas, and not let historical memory to be the one deciding our future. Is the PP going to solve all the problems that Spain has? Most likely not all of them, and certainly not overnight. However, I think we have to give them a vote of confidence and see this as that necessary change that everyone was talking about and so many protested for.

Nevertheless, leaving politics aside, Unamuno’s quote is one of the many things that had me thinking about time this week. I just finished reading Love and Pedagogy, another of Unamuno’s works. The Basque writer was definitely obsessed with the topics of death, religion and immortality and he conveys in his works the necessity of CREATING as the only way to defeat death. And what’s the ultimate creation to remain in time? Children… Shakespeare already said so in Sonnet 12:

When I do count the clock that tells the time,  

And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;  

When I behold the violet past prime,  

And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white;

When lofty trees I see barren of leaves  

Which erst from heat did canopy the herd, 

And summer's green all girded up in sheaves  

Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard,  

Then of thy beauty do I question make,  

That thou among the wastes of time must go, 

Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake 

And die as fast as they see others grow;  

And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence 

Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.

Why the reference to Shakespeare? Well, it’s not pedantry; it’s just a way to show that around 500 years ago, in a different country, in a very different time from Unamuno’s and ours, we find the same ideas and worries… And that takes me to now, to our present. I think that ALL of us, old and young, have heard sometime “these young people nowadays…”, “in my time things were much better…”. I have found myself thinking and saying similar things now that I’m growing older. Well, here’s another example:

“Our young people are decadent and undisciplined, they don’t listen to the advice of old people, the end of times is close.” (Caldeus, 2000 b.C.)

Oh, well… in the end it’s going to be true that thing about the cyclic character of time and life itself. We’re always different and always the same… However, since “nobody learns from other’s mistakes” (today it’s all about quotes and proverbs), we have to go through the process to learn the same things that others already learned before us and, if we’re lucky, we may contribute with something else. Our little bit, our grain of sand, to the big hourglass…

Se empieza con un granito de arena...

Ya llevaba tiempo dándole vueltas a la posibilidad de crear un blog, pero la idea de tener una especie de "diario público" no me acababa de convencer. Sin embargo, ahora lo empiezo a ver de otra forma: más que un diario público es una carta abierta a quién la quiera leer. ¿Por qué el reloj de arena? Mi vida está entre España y Estados Unidos y, al igual que un reloj de arena debe ser constantemente volteado para seguir ejerciendo su función, yo voy y vengo, cruzo el Atlántico de este a oeste y viceversa para seguir adelante con esta vida entre orillas que he escogido vivir.

Y digo escogido con cierta duda... ¿Lo decidí yo o fue circunstancial? La decisión como tal existía: volver a España con un futuro incierto y un nivel de paro cada vez más elevado o quedarme en USA con un trabajo y una beca de estudios... Uno de los motivos que me ha llevado a empezar este blog es precisamente la situación en la que se encuentra España ahora mismo: con motivo de las elecciones de este fin de semana, muchos jóvenes se han echado a la calle a quejarse y a demostrar que les importan las cosas mucho más de lo que la gente se piensa. Yo, como parte del millón y medio de españoles desperdigados por el mundo, me siento orgullosa y, por primera vez en mucho tiempo, representada. Por fin una "revolución", un movimiento para enseñarles a los políticos, al país y al mundo que hay una enorme generación de jóvenes que quieren un futuro mejor, quieren hacer y no les dejan... La frustración tiene un límite.

No sé la cantidad de veces que he hablado con familia y amigos sobre lo mal que están las cosas en España, el paro, problemas sociales... Será porque soy estudiante, será porque soy profesora, o será porque estudio precisamente la relación entre pedagogía y política, pero yo a todo esto le veo una base en la educación misma. ¿Os acordáis cuando nos decían de pequeños que teníamos que estudiar "para tener un futuro"? Que se pongan lo altos cargos, los políticos y los que mandan a pensar en la frustración de todos esos que se mataron estudiando, consiguieron becas, sacaron su carrera... y ahora, con su título en la mano, hacen cola en el INEM o dan gracias por tener un trabajo "de lo que sea". ¿Es ése el futuro que se nos prometía? Se quejan muchos ahora sobre a falta de interés de los estudiantes desde los cursos más básicos... pero claro, si estamos en un país donde el "saber por el saber" no se inculca y el "saber por fines prácticos" no sirve, ¿qué interés van a tener? Pero bueno, el saber que la juventud española piensa así también, que están reaccionando... ayuda a mantener la esperanza de que las cosas pueden cambiar. Problemas, de uno u otro tipo, los habrá siempre, pero al menos sabemos que aún tenemos capacidad crítica y capacidad de reacción. Tenemos el derecho al voto y tenemos las urnas abiertas este domingo. Tenemos la atención de medios de todo el mundo que reflejan lo que los corruptos medios nacionales no quieren mostrar. Tenemos la capacidad y tenemos la fuerza. Ahora, como decía un profesor mío, "ni un paso atrás, ni siquiera para coger carrerilla..."

Nota: la traducción correcta de "reloj de arena" es "hourglass", pero me pareció más creativo hacer una traducción literal. Además, me gusta como suena ;)

I had been thinking for a while about the possibility of creating a blog, but the idea of having some kind of "public diary" did not sound very appealing. However, now I see it in a different way: more than a public diary, it is an open letter to anyone that wants to read it. Why an hourglass? My life is divided between Spain and the US and, just like the sandwatch must be turned up and down to keep fulfilling its purpose, I travel up and down, crossing the Atlantic Ocean from east to west and vice versa to keep going with this life in between shores that I've chosen to live.

And I say "chosen" not being completely sure... Did I decide or was it the circumstance? The choice as such was there: coming back to Spain, to an uncertain future and a place with a rising unemployment rate, or staying in the US with a job and a scholarship... One of the reasons that made me start this blog is precisely the situation that Spain is going through right now: because of the coming elections this weekend, many young people went out to the street to protest and complain and to show that they do care about things much more than people think. I, as one of the more than a 1.5 million Spaniards spread around the world, feel proud and, for the first time in a long time, represented. At last a "revolution", an uprising to show politicians, the country and the world that there is a big generation of young people who wants a better future, they want to DO and they're not allowed to... Frustration has its limits.

I have no idea how many times I've been talking with family and friends about how bad things are in Spain, unemployment, social problems... Maybe because I'm a student, maybe because I'm a teacher, or maybe because I study the relationship between pedagogy and politics, I see education as the grounds to all this. Do you remember when we were told that we have to study "to have a future"? Now those in charge, those politicians, should start thinking about the frustration of all of those people who spent so much time studying, getting their degrees, applying for scholarships... and now they are, with their diplomas in their hands, on the line of the unemployment office, or they're told they have to be thankful to have ANY type of job. Is that the promised future? Many complain nowadays about the lack of interest of students at the most basic levels... but, if we are in a country where "knowledge for the sake of knowledge" is not instilled and "practical knowledge" is not useful anymore, why would they have any interest? As sad as it is, the logic of the child makes much more sense...

But, oh well, it's good to know that Spanish young people think in the same way, that they are reacting... it helped to keep high hopes about things being likely to change. Problems, of one or another kind, will always exist, but at least we know taht we have critical awareness and the ability to react. That we have the right to vote and open ballot boxes this Sunday. We have the attention of worldwide media that show what the corrupted national media don't want to. We have the ability and we have the strength. Now, as one of my teachers used to say, "no steps back, not even to take a run-up..."

Note: I know that the correct term is "hourglass", but I'm doing a direct translation from Spanish because I like the way that it sounds ;)
