The temperature war has been raging for centuries in the deepest, darkest, filthiest areas of the Internet. No I’m not talking about not animal porn sites, I’m talking about temperature discussion forums. For those of you who don’t know, Celsius has been reining supreme for a while in the temperature scale universe, with Fahrenheit only being used in a few countries such as the USA. However, Fahrenheit is beginning to make a come back. Find out all the details after the break.

Recently Celcius has come under a lot of criticism from Fahrenheit fanboys, saying that its powerful Max/Min technology does not make it a superior scale. Some more virulent Fahrenheit fans have accused the Celsius scale of trying to appeal to ‘hardcore temperature enthusiasts’, and excluding the ‘casual market’.

Things were not looking good for Celsius late last night when Frank Fahren Heit instigated a violent discussion on www.temperatureunitcomparisonsandcontrasts.com where all hell broke loose.

While there were over a hundred criticisms of the Celsius scale, they can be summarised into two general accusations:

1. The Celsius scale has too many different versions (for example the Kelvin scale). It is confusing to decide which one to go with.

2. Not all Celsius scales have full backwards compatibility with the Réaumur scale.

Carl Celsi Us, who changed his name due to his love of the Celsius scale, replied to the claims:

‘We believe that a temperature scale should not have to rely on an Italian heating technician called Fario, in order to sell. We also believe that being able to adjust the position of a thermometer using a motion sensing wand is a gimmick. Finally, the lack of a competent online service prevent the Fahrenheit scale from reaching its full potential.’

Regardless of what the Celsius scale team say, one thing is sure: Fahrenheit could be making a come back.

Another month, another console war prediction from the Webush Morgan analysist Michael Patcher. Over the past year, Patcher has been giving his predictions on the Console War and gaining noteriety within the gaming community. For the last two months, Patcher has been beating the PS3 drum, extoling to anyone that will listen that the PS3 would beat the 360 in sales in March and April, especially in light of GTA IV’s release. He’s been wrong. In fact, before GTA’s release, he predicted that PS3 sales would cause over 2 million units sold against only 1 million due to GTA alone. Wrong again.

In fact, Patcher’s been so wrong lately that the Webush Morgan analyst announced yesterday in an interview with gamepolitics.com that he was getting out of the video game business and moving on to other things. Find out what, after the jump.

In his recent interview, Patcher was quoted as being, “tired of being wrong” and “tired of being shown up by no-nothing fanboys.” Yes, it seems that Patcher’s 20% success rate finally caught up with him.

What’s next? Well Patcher went on in the interview to make a number of bold predictions about the environment, the US economy, the Presidential Election and a number of controversial topics.

Patcher predicted:

The sun will come out “tomorrow”

A president will be “elected” in November

Humans will continue to have opposable thumbs, for the “forseeable future”

Gas will be “expensive”

The Dark Knight Movie will be “awesome”

He thinks apples are “good”

The TV show Lost will air episodes for “only” two more seasons.

Today I am happy to announce we’ve begun work on a mobile version of the site that loads fast and makes catching up on the latest Sarcastic Gamer news a breeze from anywhere.

Call of Duty 4 - May 16th - 9:15 CST: Have I grown bored of GTA? Not by a long shot. I’ve just felt like I was mistreating my once loving mistress Call of Duty. Because of these strange feelings for inanimate objects, one of the two North American gamer nights this week will be going back into the trenches for Call of Duty 4. I imagine if Doc is there, you may get to try out SG-Tag, or just watch helicopters fly through the city for a while. The European gamer night this week is heading into Liberty City for much chaos and destruction. If you’re in North America and want to get in on the action, it starts at 4 pm CST.
Mario Kart - May 16th - 6:00 CST: I got to play this last week, and I’ve got to say - it’s an absolute blast! I can see why this is a popular choice for gamer nights. Whether you use the Wheel or a Gamecube controller, you’re going to have loads of fun racing with the Sarcastic Gamer community. Also, if you’ve got Brawl, you can stick around when the races finish to get into some more action.
Smash Bros Brawl - May 16th - 8:00 CST: Another game I got to play for the first time, and it’s Smash Bros all the way. Another fine choice for gamer nights.
Editors Note: Another nifty blog entry from the Sarcastic Gamer User Blogs.

by Destyn

The Wii has been dubbed the retarded redheaded stepchild of the gaming world around here lately. I don’t get it, it’s by far been the most successful of the current generation consoles and beloved by 99% of its owners, so…

Like the inimitable Lono, I’m a recent Wii owner; and as such something of a convert - for the simple reason that I gave up trying to figure out why I hated it from the other side of a store window and actually played it.

It’s not until you have spent some time with the Wii that you begin to understand its charms - and the brilliance of the Nintendo corporate brain. If somebody was to tell you a few years back that a console based firmly toward the Japanese market would achieve market penetration in the west to rival any of the other superconsoles would you believe them? No, but it did. And here’s why: it’s unique. It’s pervasive. It’s intuitive. It’s completely Japanese.

From opening the box you immediately know that what you have purchased is something not made for the standard western audience: for starters, the design is way off base from what we’re used to. Where are the controller ports? Why isn’t it geometrically solid? Where are all the pretty and bright LEDs? This is the first pull - the Wii is not made to be flashy and show you what it can do. The Wii is made to show you what you can do with it. It’s about interaction, not form.

Into the menu then, and you’ll realise that the lack of an HDMI or component cable actually hasn’t hampered the visuals the way you thought it would. Where was the splash screen? Did you miss it? Did you need it? Has it really loaded that quickly? Presented with a small amount of TV screens from which to make your choices, you begin using the Wiimote, and realise it fits very securely in your hand. You point it at the screen, and receive instant visual and tactile feedback, allowing you to quickly acclimatise to the new input method - after all, it’s the same as using a TV remote. Any game you load into the slot loader appears in it’s own “channel”, always on the top left of the screen. Flicking through to the mail/memo application is also intuitive, as the screen literally “flips” into the next screen, with a feeling of continuity and flow. Each “channel” and screen is met with its own little noises and tunes.

On creating a “Mii”, the graphical representation of your character consistent throughout the games, you realise it isn’t important that you can’t identically map your face into the game using a camera. You don’t have to spend hours aligning that left eyebrow so it’s juuuuuust right, because if you were a cartoon, you’d look like what you’re seeing here anyway. The lack of options has forced you to be happy with what you have, and happy with what everyone else has - a quick look into the Mii Plaza reveals that there is still a lot of individuality to be gained, but within the overall limits of the society Wii has created. A particularly telling indicator of the social environment Wii engenders is the “Everybody Votes” channel. You’re given a simple question, and two options - you vote for the one you want. Then you get to choose which option you think will win. After the votes are in (you’ll be sent a mail), you get to see how popular your opinion is, and how far you are away from everyone else’s opinions. Compliance is encouraged in a very subtle, ‘we’re all one big family, let’s help each other’ way.

So what’s the point of all this? Being happy with what you’ve got. Function over form. Compact size over flash. Homogeny. The ability to obsessively collect things (stars, points, other people) in your game. Interaction on a very basic level - seeing real people in your games even when they’re not playing. Anthropomorphisation. The very things that are almost always guaranteed to win over the incredibly fickle Japanese market are working just as well here - with a focus on the games not the glitz, Nintendo have managed to enact a culture shift through a very insidious method, and one which will continue to grow. If we can lose our obsession with stats, frame rates, game hours… then we can get back into what gaming should be about: losing yourself for a short period of time, which was exactly what they intended when creating the Wii.

So next time you want to beat down the console for not being hi-spec enough, or for not having the guts and glory of the other megalithic consoles out there, try something new: play it first.

Oh yeah, I suckered you in, didn’t I. The new game? Yeah, it’s a bean bag tossing game called Target Toss Pro: Bags. Those Incredible Technologies? Yeah, that’d be the developer’s name. The cumulative image of the Wii just sank another notch lower in my book. We now have video game equivalents of simple kids games.

You toss a bean bag into a hole. Wait, that was over-simplified, let me quote the words of the developer: “You stand at one end of a court with four beanbags, and at the other end there is a slanted, wedge shaped box with a hole in it. Your goal is to toss the beanbag into the hole.”

Uh, yeah, that’s better?

At what point does a parent (or even kid) decide that paying money for a virtual bean bag and a virtual hole is a better investment than filling a sock with pinto beans and cutting a whole in a board?

Every time a decent game gets released on the Wii, I feel a little bit less validated for my personal dismissal of the system as a whole, but then there’s inevitably a bunch of stuff like “bean bag tossing” to remind me what a crap-magnet the Wii has become. Make no mistake, Wii owners/lovers, I’m not saying there are no good games for the system, I’m saying the machine is a shovelware-prone crap-magnet. I dare you to deny that fact… double DOG dare you.

I’d love to see someone work out the Hits-to-Sh*t ratio of the three current gen systems. Ah hell, that seems easy enough to do… let’s hit Metacritic.com and compare games scoring over 80 to games scoring under 80 for the three consoles. Wow, that’s actually pretty interesting to see… For the PS3, every hit game is matched by 3.12 sh*t games. For the 360, every hit game comes along with 4.15 sh*t games. Lastly, we have the Wii… where every hit game, drags along 9.09 sh*t games in its wake. I think that speaks for itself.

Incredible Technologies… you’re aptly named, although I think you intended the “good” connotation of the word “incredible” instead of the one I’m thinking of… the one realizing that on a percentage basis there is over twice the crap on the Wii as the 360 and almost three times the crap as the PS3.

From the Sarcastic Gamer User Blog of Kromax44

Over the weekend, I was all set to write a post about how you can divide the world into three types of people: Docs, Daves and Lonos. (Confession: I was trying to make it to the front page.) I had the outline in my mind.

I asked my wife to listen to a couple of recent podcasts to validate my belief that I am a Lono (prone to going off the deep end, emotional, condescending at times, etc.). Naturally, being an ardent anti-gamer, she refused to listen. I sweetened the deal by offering to help do some of the preparations for a big party that we threw on Saturday, and reluctantly, she agreed.

I randomly selected Episode 32: Lono’s Got a Brand New Bag. (Read on-it may not have been so random.)

I think it was about fifteen minutes into the show when she told me that I’m a Dave. I was shocked. I was mad. I was defiant. I asked her to reserve judgment until the show ended (at that point, she already informed me that she would not listen to another show).

When Lono made his comment that the 360 was the “Russian Roulette of video game consoles,” I said, “hey, that’s something I would say.” She shrugged her shoulders. When Lono went off on Doc about how he didn’t even know the name of my own team, I reminded her of the tantrum I recently threw at a car dealership (long story). When Dave made the “my hood against your hood” comment when discussing GTA IV multiplayer, I shuddered a little bit, since that actually sounded like something I might say. She pounced on it, as if it sealed the deal.

I wanted to be a Lono. I was convinced I was a Lono. Lono is a lawyer. I’m a lawyer. Lono has a temper I have a temper. Lono can be mean. I can be mean. (I could go on.) I was actually offended at being labeled a Dave. I had always thought of Dave as the whipping boy, the sidekick, the unintentional butt of the joke (think Hank Kingsley from The Larry Sanders Show). But you know what? Dave is pretty clever. Dave is more inclined to interject one-liners, sort of pick his spots. Dave is talented; who doesn’t look forward to the “Dave, take us out” segment?

In retrospect, I would rather be a Dave (no offense Lono). In fact, I’m proud to be a Dave.

What are you?

I love Rock Band. I don’t play it enough. One of the best, but puzzling things about the game is the constant DLC that EA brings out to support the game. Some may disagree, but having new songs to download every week keeps the game fresh, for me personally, and extends the life of the game in general. That’s the good, but what keeps me puzzled is the selection of DLC. Why is it that Faith No More’s only DLC is “We Care A Lot?” When are we going to get the Who’s “Baba O’Riley?” When are we going to get a Pearl Jam download pack?

I want it all.

Enough with the fringe stuff from our favorite rock bands. Bring on the hits. That said, here’s ten songs that I want in Rock Band and I want it NOW!

10. Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie

I was introduced to a cover version of this song in Guitar Hero. I’m sure that I had heard the song before playing that game on the PS2, but I absolutely fell in love with the song while playing it in Guitar Hero. After playing it, I went out and bought as much Bowie as I could. Unfortunately, most of his stuff does not approach the greatness of Ziggy Stardust. It’s a great mid-tempo song. I want to sing that song, I want to play the drums on that song. The master track needs to come out for Rock Band.

9. Gentlemen by the Afghan Wigs

This is my indulgence pick. What can I say, I love the Afghan Wigs and Gentlemen is their best song. Great song to sing, play guitar, bass, and drums.

8. Thunderstruck by AC/DC

I know people want “Shook Me All Night Long” or “Back in Black,” but for my money “Thunderstruck” is the most kick ass song by AC/DC. Who wouldn’t want to tackle that guitar riff on expert? Get your Carpal Tunnel Surgeon lined up, cause I wants me some “Thunderstruck!”

7. Midlife Crisis by Faith No More

Enough with “We Care A Lot” bull crap. Bring on the Faith No More hits and believe me, there’s more than just Epic. They’ve been around a long time and have made some really great songs. It’s less of a sing song, but the drums on it are great.

6. Sober by Tool

When are we going to get some Tool? Nuff said.

Top five coming up on page 2!

Ever since episode one of the Sarcastic Gamer Playstation Podcast aired, I have been getting as much love from the Playstation community as I have been getting hate from the Xbox neighborhood. Considering the console war never meant a damn thing to me before (and still doesn’t), seeing as how I have alway been a proven PC addict, news that I am now a biased PS3 fanboy struck me as ludicrous, and more than a little funny.

Check out why I went with the PS3 over the 360 after the jump!

Do I like the PS3 more than the 360? Without question. Do I think the 360 sucks? No, and anyone that believes I do needs to take 10 chill pills (Pez candy of course) and go back to their Halo 3 happy place.

I agreed to co-host SG’s new Playstation Podcast because I recognized the opportunity it presented to speak out on a lot of what is going on within the Sony gaming world, a world that has been widely, and unjustly vilified by one-sided Podcasts, sites and shows. Also, the original SG podcast is NOT an Xbot show and anyone who thinks it is needs to have their hearing checked. The 360 was the first console the hosts owned and is their main gaming platform of choice, but they have no qualms about knocking the 360 down a peg, or two, when deserved. Rothbart, Frawlz and I intend to be just as critical (if not more so) of the PS3.

I may not own all three consoles, but that does not mean I have not played on all of them extensively over the past 2 years. If anyone wants to travel back in time to previous things I have written it should be obvious that I WAS a critic of the PS3. I thought Rothbart was deluded to think that Sony could bounce back, but unlike Xbots and their PS3 equivalents, I have the ability to admit I was wrong.

Why was I swayed towards the PS3, away from the 360 (which was originally ahead)? The answer to that takes into account numerous issues.

I pay enough monthly fee’s already, and I have yet to see ANY direct correlation between XBL paid subscriptions and quality support. Major down time two years in a row during the holiday season? Nice, the only time of year when I have a load of free time to play and I can’t. Having XBL drop for even two days over the Christmas break would have me foaming at the mouth. RRoD? Sure, if this was an isolated, 1 in a million occurrence, I’d consider it a non-issue. The fact that every single one of my IRL friends with a 360 has had RRoD at least once, if not multiple times is a huge negative for me. Exclusives? Sorry, not one Xbox semi-exclusive has ever made me want a 360 that badly since the great ones will make it to my PC eventually (hello superior Mass Effect). That does not mean I think Halo or Gears of War are crap (though I am not a big fan of either since few shooter titles hold my attention long) or that I cannot understand the attraction. On the whole, the games I want to play on the 360 are also available on the PS3. 25+ games with high MetaCritic scores that DO interest me on the PS3 are more than enough thank you very much. Oh wait, Ninja Gaiden II is a 360 exclusive, but I’ll live without it.

Achievements and Gamerscore mean next to nothing to me, so the lack there of on the PS3 is a non-issue. If you like’em, good for you, but I for one never got the attraction and marvel that people equate skill level with either. I admit I would like to see something basic like a competitive stat page for a given game. How many online matches have you won, how many kills do you average a match, who have you defeated etc… Anything beyond that does not interest me in the slightest. The only thing seeing that you have found all the flags or discovered all the Easter eggs in a game proves to me is that you spent a whole bunch of time achieving things that are only passably fun.

A new video of the Convoy gameplay in Gears of War 2 was released yesterday, and I’ve got to say that my excitement for the game has started to grow. I wasn’t a big fan of the first installment, but from what I’ve seen so far in Gears 2, they’re fixing quite a few of the problems I had.

Take the jump to see the video and get my impressions on the different changes Epic is making to the franchise.

The first thing I noticed when the video started was just how much was going on in the background. While there was always fire going back and forth in Gears 1, it felt very slow and constricted to me. Gears 2 looks like some of the battles will be much more epic, with more things to do than sit behind cover and pop off a few shots when it’s safe.

Then of course, the second thing I noticed was that Marcus was using a Locust as a meatshield. I bet this is going to be very useful when trying to get around the battlefield, and the execution when he was done with his shield was also pretty awesome. It would be an interesting mechanic to show up in multiplayer, but I doubt that will happen. It also looks like the executions were changed a little bit from the first one, because instead of just stomping on the downed Locust’s head, Marcus felt it was necessary to get down and dirty to do a brutal wrestling style beatdown on his foe. Necessary? No, but it looked cool.

It wouldn’t be Gears of War without the chainsaw, and it looks like that aspect of the game is getting a pretty awesome overhaul. You now have different animations depending on where you attack the enemy, and the chainsaw duel from the teaser trailer from GDC is finding its way into the full game. From the interview you can find below, Cliff mentions that when you initiate a chainsaw kill or duel, you’re no longer invincible, which can only spell good things for the gameplay. Also, the duels will take no longer than a regular kill, so you won’t have to worry about dueling someone for a full minute only to be shot in the back by their buddy.

Another little tidbit from the interview is that multiplayer matches will be bumped up by 2 people, meaning 5v5, instead of 4v4. I always felt the maps felt a little small and restricted in multiplayer, so hopefully this means they’ll be more fleshed out in the sequel, and hopefully that will mean there’s more strategy to it than a marathon run to the power weapons.

All in all, the trailer and interview definitely put Gears 2 on my radar, since I was ready to blow it off because of my experiences with the first game. It was definitely a visual masterpiece, but the gameplay and combat felt a little bland to me. Judging from just this short trailer, it looks like they’re kicking up the action, and hopefully the multiplayer will get the same jump start.

For those of you who don’t know already, I am the love child of video game legend PacMan and a female Polar Bear. Abandoned by my father, I was raised in the cold Canadian North by my loving Polar Bear mother Bernice. While I did inherit PacMan’s love of video games, my mother taught me everything I know. From finding the best garbage dumps to rummage through to picking the best tourists to maul, my mom made me the man I am today.

That’s why news that Polar Bear’s may become the newest mount in World Of Warcraft has made me so angry! Would you want a bunch of pimple faced shut-ins to mount YOUR mom?!

Find out all the details on Blizzard’s Polar Bear cruelty after the jump!

Blizzard staff member Tigole let slip this past Monday that Polar Bear’s may become a new mount for the WoW: Wrath of the Lich King expansion. This horrific news was confirmed today by Blizzard staff member Bornakk.

My extended family is furious at the news and I cannot blame them. My mother, brothers and sisters (those not eaten by my uncle Bob) deserve better. If WoW gamers wanted to mount Brown Bears, Panda’s or even Koala’s, I would not care. Brown Bears smell, Pandas are the clowns of the Bear kingdom and Koalas…let’s just say I don’t like’em and leave it at that shall we?

Mom deserves to be able to roam the ice sheets of Alaska and the North West Territories, eating abandoned fast food, starring in Coca-Cola commercials and occasionally tearing off the leg of a foolish tourist who got too close to my new baby sister Vespa, in peace, the way mother nature intended. If I showed up at YOUR house with a saddle, asking to ride your mom around the countryside, you’d be pissed off too.
