<itunes:summary>It's not every day that you get to meet a hero, whether online or in person.  To get to hear a hero's story, though, is like icing on the cake.  And it is always an honor.
This is the first feature in this new blog series, Great Stories and Recipes from Great American Heroes.  None of these individuals featured were told they were being called a hero.  I just want to be clear about that because I have never heard a hero label himself as a hero, and this is no different!  We shared the definition for the word, "hero," in our introduction of this series, but when it comes to those who serve country, I would say there are very few who would argue that these men and women are, in fact, heroes!
And in this series, we will honor them and learn from them as they share their stories.

The Hero

Anne | The Lucky Wife

Lieutenant Colonel Brooks Dyer, then a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, was living his dream.  He had just recently graduated from Stanford University.  His father, out of concern about his wild tendencies in college and knowing he had always wanted to fly airplanes, arranged a meeting in Saint Louis, where the family lived, with a Marine Corps recruiter.

Basically, as soon as 2LT Dyer expressed his interest in flying, the recruiter signed him up for a flight physical the following week.  So he entered the Marine Corps and went to flight school.  He served active duty from 1961-1966 and then in the Reserves from 1966-1982 as a Fighter Pilot and Attack Pilot, while working full time for American Airlines until his retirement.

The Stories
While in flight school, 2LT Dyer had his first realization of the risks that come with flying.  While standing duty one day, there was an aircraft accident between two planes, which resulted in the deaths of one instructor and two students.

One of the students was in his barracks, and it was 2LT Dyer's responsibility to inventory everything the student had in his room, expected by his superiors to be completed immediately.  He recalls:

I can still remember he had rolled his socks up neatly and he had his name on the socks as he was taught to do.  And there I was taking the socks out of his drawer that he had put so neatly into the drawer....I learned then that life could be over in a minute and you had to live while you were here.  This guy had put his socks in his drawer to wear them again.  And here I was taking them out and he would never wear them again.
Needless to say, it was a defining moment for him.

Another interesting experience 2LT Dyer had very early on came just a month after he got his wings in September of 1962 when things began heating up for our military.  The Cuban Missile Crisis broke in October.

About two years later, as a member of the first squadron to say there were Russian radar and missiles in Cuba, 2LT Dyer was sent with a team on a reconnaissance mission over Cuba.  In our podcast portion of this series, he shares with us the story of that mission, what happened that caused them to lose contact with their Commanding Officer for hours, and the news of tragedy from home the team received while relaxing after the ordeal was over before heading home the following day.

Hear him tell the story in the podcast!
[At the beginning of this post... see above, top of page]

The Recipes
LTC Dyer shared his favorite recipe with us, which you can get from Chef John in the podcast, if you have not yet listened to it (see above).   I suspect most men would love this recipe!
LTC Dyer also shared that his wife, Teena Cahill, makes "the best eggplant anyone has ever tasted."  I have only eaten eggplant once in my life at my favorite restaurant.  I have thought several times since then about finding some eggplant recipes to try at home, so I'm looking forward to trying this one!
