First episode includes a story from an 85-year-old veteran about his recon flight team that was "lost" for a period of time during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Hosted by the authors of a popular food blog, podcast also includes favorite recipes you are sure to want to try in your own home. You will be entertained, and possibly educated, while listening to these men and women, and you will sense the love for America they have, which will inspire you and deepen your own patriotism.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>In celebration of Memorial Day, in memory of great American heroes who have given their lives in service to this country, and in honor of those currently serving, we are sharing a special episode from our Great Stories and Recipes from Great American Heroes series.  And what better day than Memorial Day to share a recipe that would be perfect for a Memorial Day gathering:  Bacon Explosion!

The Heroes

We are honored to welcome two guests today, Lieutenant Commander Kurt Celis and his wife, Alison Celis. LCDR Celis has served in the United States Navy from 1995-2003, in the Army from 2003-2007 and from 2007 to the current time in the Navy again.

The Stories
Alison served as an Army Major from 1998-2009, first as a military resident, then a trained flight surgeon following her Emergency Medicine residency. Serving in the military was something she had always wanted to do. Her Great Grandfather and Grandfather had both served in the Navy and her Aunt went to medical school on an Army Scholarship. This, along with a deep desire to serve her country, is what inspired Alison to follow the same path.
But not only did she receive her education through serving in the Army, she also met the man who became her husband.

You are going to love hearing how they met, along with a story from LCDR Celis’ experiences in combat which included a very brief conversation that changed his life forever and how their love story has led to a new venture, called Hero Matchmaker.

Listen to Part 1 of the podcast here for those stories:

[Part 2 is a favorite recipe they shared.  See below for more details on that.]

The Recipe [Bacon Explosion]
LCDR Celis shared that one of his favorite recipes is called Bacon Explosion, which is actually a trademark of BBQ Addicts.
They gave us permission to share the recipe with you in the podcast:

With permission, we also are sharing some photos of the Bacon Explosion:

See those share buttons below the post?  Share, share, share for the Bacon and BBQ fans in your life!  They are sure to love it!
As I mentioned in the podcast, the instructions for the recipe are pretty lengthy and detailed.  Please visit BBQAddicts.com to make sure you have the instructions handy if you want to try making one.

Their Life Together Today

LCDR Celis and his wife, Alison, enjoy life together today with their beautiful daughter, named Freedom.  As you heard in the podcast (part 1), they also have begun a new endeavor, Hero Matchmaker, to help heroes find the perfect match with someone who is either a hero as well or who understands and has what it takes to share life with a hero.

As Chef John mentioned in part 2 of the podcast, he is a former police officer, so we know the stresses that LCDR Celis referenced when speaking about the type of environment those who serve are in each day on the job.  Honestly, there were definitely days I did not feel "cut out" for the role of "wife of a police officer"!  I admire those who fulfill that role well each day, loving and supporting those who do so much for America.
Maybe you or someone you know would be interested in learning more about Hero Matchmaker.  If so, there is much more information on the Hero Matchmaker website.

Honoring Our Heroes
As I have spoken with those we are featuring in this series, one common “theme” I have found is, not surprisingly, deep patriotism. I have asked each guest if they ever had an experience that made them especially proud to be a part of America’s military, and the answers so far have made me realize just how important it is for those of us who are civilians to show appreciation to our heroes.
Here is what LCDR Celis shared:

Every day I put on the uniform I was proud. But the day we returned home from Iraq and landed in Dallas, the plane was showered with fire hoses, the crew thanked us for our service. It was a time to reflect on a lot of the things that had transpired over the year.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>It's not every day that you get to meet a hero, whether online or in person.  To get to hear a hero's story, though, is like icing on the cake.  And it is always an honor.
This is the first feature in this new blog series, Great Stories and Recipes from Great American Heroes.  None of these individuals featured were told they were being called a hero.  I just want to be clear about that because I have never heard a hero label himself as a hero, and this is no different!  We shared the definition for the word, "hero," in our introduction of this series, but when it comes to those who serve country, I would say there are very few who would argue that these men and women are, in fact, heroes!
And in this series, we will honor them and learn from them as they share their stories.

The Hero

Lieutenant Colonel Brooks Dyer, then a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, was living his dream.  He had just recently graduated from Stanford University.  His father, out of concern about his wild tendencies in college and knowing he had always wanted to fly airplanes, arranged a meeting in Saint Louis, where the family lived, with a Marine Corps recruiter.

Basically, as soon as 2LT Dyer expressed his interest in flying, the recruiter signed him up for a flight physical the following week.  So he entered the Marine Corps and went to flight school.  He served active duty from 1961-1966 and then in the Reserves from 1966-1982 as a Fighter Pilot and Attack Pilot, while working full time for American Airlines until his retirement.

The Stories
While in flight school, 2LT Dyer had his first realization of the risks that come with flying.  While standing duty one day, there was an aircraft accident between two planes, which resulted in the deaths of one instructor and two students.

One of the students was in his barracks, and it was 2LT Dyer's responsibility to inventory everything the student had in his room, expected by his superiors to be completed immediately.  He recalls:

I can still remember he had rolled his socks up neatly and he had his name on the socks as he was taught to do.  And there I was taking the socks out of his drawer that he had put so neatly into the drawer....I learned then that life could be over in a minute and you had to live while you were here.  This guy had put his socks in his drawer to wear them again.  And here I was taking them out and he would never wear them again.
Needless to say, it was a defining moment for him.

Another interesting experience 2LT Dyer had very early on came just a month after he got his wings in September of 1962 when things began heating up for our military.  The Cuban Missile Crisis broke in October.

About two years later, as a member of the first squadron to say there were Russian radar and missiles in Cuba, 2LT Dyer was sent with a team on a reconnaissance mission over Cuba.  In our podcast portion of this series, he shares with us the story of that mission, what happened that caused them to lose contact with their Commanding Officer for hours, and the news of tragedy from home the team received while relaxing after the ordeal was over before heading home the following day.

Hear him tell the story in the podcast!

The Recipes
LTC Dyer shared his favorite recipe with us, which you can get from Chef John in the podcast, if you have not yet listened to it (see above).   I suspect most men would love this recipe!
LTC Dyer also shared that his wife, Teena Cahill, makes "the best eggplant anyone has ever tasted."  I have only eaten eggplant once in my life at my favorite restaurant.  I have thought several times since then about finding some eggplant recipes to try at home, so I'm looking forward to trying this one!
