The Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI) Presents a California Direct Care Workforce Fact Sheet

The Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute (PHI), with support from The SCAN Foundation, presents a fact sheet addressing critical issues surrounding the direct care workforce of California. Each day, more than a half million personal attendants, home health aides, and nursing aides provide essential daily living services and supports to persons with disabilities and chronic care needs, including the elderly.
This fact sheet explores the demographics and growing demand for a highly trained direct care workforce to meet the current and future needs of older Californians and those with disabilities.
To read the PHI fact sheet regarding California’s direct care workforce, please click here.

Brookings Report: Achieving Better Chronic Care at Lower Costs Across the Health Care Continuum for Older Americans

The SCAN Foundation and The John A. Hartford Foundation announce the publication of a Brookings Institution report, “Achieving Better Chronic Care at Lower Costs Across the Health Care Continuum for Older Americans,” which examines one of the most urgent issues affecting health care policy today. Improvements in the efficiency and quality of care delivered by the U.S. health care system is largely dependent on reforming the way that care is supported, reimbursed, and delivered to older Americans, who often have multiple chronic illnesses and are in need of long-term services and supports (such as home and community-based services, intermediate care facilities for people with mental retardation/developmental disabilities, or nursing homes).

The National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP), with support from The SCAN Foundation, presents a State Health Policy Brief focused on health reform provisions that give states additional options for financing Medicaid home-and community-based services and supports.
The brief analyzes scenarios whereby states, which have significant roles in implementing many aspects of the Affordable Care Act, might implement a combination of new Medicaid state plan options, enhanced Medicaid matching payments, and demonstration projects to expand community-based care.
