The Camera I Have Been Waiting For: Canon EOS M

I think I have found the camera suited for my blogging and street photography needs, the new Canon EOS M! With its compact size, excellent video features, APS-C size sensor for low noise performance, high quality photos and videos and ideal price range, it seems to be the almost perfect match for my photography requirements.

My requirements as a blogger:

Compact and not a DSLR especially for venues/events that does not allow DLSRs like concert
Very good image quality for both photos and videos
Low light performance both on video and photos
Continuous auto focusing while shooting videos
External Mic connection for better audio in video interviews
Exposure control during video recording

My requirements as a street photographer:

Compact so it's not threatening to subjects on the street and to improve my "invisibility"
Very good image quality for photos
Low light performance since like to take photos inside malls and indoor public settings

Why Canon EOS M is Ideal for my Needs?

Aside from the obvious reason that I have invested in Canon gears like my 580 EXII flash and Canon EF-S mount Sigma lens, that I can use with the M, here are the reason I think this camera is the one for all solution for my blogging and street photography requirements.

1. Compact

With the small dimensions (WxHxD) of approx. 4.28 x 2.62 x 1.27 in./ 108.6 x 66.5 x 32.3mm, it is very compact compared to a DSLR with the same sensor and processor specification and weighs only 14 ounces/392g.

It's not really the weight or the bulk that made me enumerate compactness as a requirement, it is the stigma of the DSLR being a professional camera that made compactness a prime consideration. A lot of events like concerts does not allow audience to bring in DSLRs. When I was covering the David Cook Live in Manila concert at the Smart Araneta last July 14, 2012, we were instructed by the organizer not bring any DSLRs but compact cameras were allowed. Actually, the Big Dome policy is no DSLRs allowed but you can shoot as much as you want with compact cameras.

Let me put more weight in this requirement by sharing my experience. During the same concert, the authorized photographers were allowed to bring DSLRs. They were positioned at the photo pit in between the stage and the mosh pit separated with a barrier were allowed to shoot with their DSLRs but only during the first 3 songs. After the 3 song, they were all sent away. I was at the barrier in the front of the stage at the mosh pit and was able to shoot photos with my G12 and videos with my LX5 throughout the duration of the concert untouched by security because I was using a compact camera! I would have taken these photos and a complete set videos of the concert if I was using a DSLR.

In Street Photography as well, having a compact camera helps you to be more "invisible" and it's less "threatening" to your subjects in the street. They will just think of you as someone not too serious or just like a tourist who will not publish their photos for commercial gain or for the media.

2. Very Good Image Quality (IQ)

DSLR are equated with very good IQ because of their use of larger sensors like the APS-C. While the compacts have reasonably good IQ almost comparable to DSLRs especially in very good lighting conditions, it still falls short. This is due to the smaller sensors they use which does not performs as good as the bigger ones used in DSLRs especially in low light conditions.

The Canon EOS M is a mirror-less compact camera with same large APS-C 18 megapixel censor and same Digic 5 processor found in its bigger DSLR sibling, the Canon t4i/650D. With the same sensor size in a compact body, the M can deliver the same quality as the Canon t4i/650D theoretically.

3. Low light performance both on video and photos

The camera's low light performance depends heavily on it's sensor size and processor. Since the M uses the larger APS-C sensor and the latest sophisticated Digic-5 processor, the low light performance ot the M is very impressive as it's DSLR sibling. ISO can be set to 100-6400 (expandable to 12800 in H mode) for video recording, ISO 100-12800 (expandable to 25600 in H mode) for still images.

In addition, the standard lens provided is a 22 mm f/2.0 fast lens. With it's f/2.0 fast wide aperture capability which will allow more light to come in combined with the above specs, it stretches your limits when it comes to shooting without flash in low light situations. This is very important when covering events in poorer lighting and shooting street style photographs indoors.

4. Continuous Auto Focusing while Shooting Videos

The M is equipped with Movie Servo AF for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects. It uses Hybrid CMOS AF that uses both phase and contrast detection to deliver faster autofocus speed for video. In addition, with the new STM (stepping motor) focus technology, focusing is silent so it does not interfere with your audio in the video recordings.

5. External Mic Connection for Better Audio in Video Interviews

In addition to its built-in stereo mics, the M has a input jack for an external microphone. This is very important if you want to use an external microphone like a unidirectional mic or lapel to improve the quality of the audio in interviews during video coverages.

6. Exposure control during video recording

Adjusting / overriding the automatic exposure before and/or during video recording is critical for proper exposure. The M has manual exposure control or exposure compensation depending on the mode you.
It has even manual audio level adjustment.

The reasons above are my main consideration in concluding that the Canon EOS M will be a perfect match for my requirement at the target price range of around P 35,000 pesos.

Other Negative Factors and Considerations

Nothing is perfect of course. With its scaled down size comes compromises.

Battery
The battery is smaller so it would not last longer. Coupled with no optical viewfinder, the dependence on the usage of the LCD for framing and as interface control, wlll definitely reduce battery life. I have to consider buying an extra batter to counter this issue similar to the one I have with the Lumix LX-5 as well.

Slower Focusing for Photos
The M's new sensor-based AF system to focus, while this system is great for video it's not nearly as powerful it's DSLR sibling's 9-point optical autofocus sensor. Focusing will be slower and could be a concern in events photography and street photography. I have to really try it out in actual to be able to judge if it's fast enough.

The search continues (and the search of funding as well) for my ideal blogging and street photography camera.

The Great Northern Sale Fashion Show was held July 13, 2012 at SM City North EDSA as part of its shopping Sale activities. It was a 30 minutes runway catwalk held the the Atrium of The Block.

SM Southmall, the premiere shopping destination in South Metro Manila held the 3rd edition of SM Southmall Runway Picks on Saturday, July 7, 2012 featuring top fashion brands local and global brands – SM Department Store, SM Ladies Fashion, GTW, 3 Stars & a Sun, Bench, Blue, Inc., Celine, Charles & Keith, Fox, Gingersnaps, Girbaud, Human, Jag, Just G, Kali, Kashieca, Levi’s, Mags, Mendrez, Michelis, Osh Losh, Parfois, Payless, Peppermint, Periwinkle, Petite Monde, Plains & Prints, Promod, Sabella, Shubizz, Tomato Green & Red, Yves Rocher. Travel Photography TV Show: What I See - With Francisco "Paco" Guerrero

I recently saw a TV show related to photography, Travel Photography to be more precise. It's called "What I See". It stars Francisco "Paco" Guerrero and airs on Talk TV channel. This series was shown before in GMA News TV.

According to Wikipedia, Talk TV is available over SBN 21 on free TV, SkyCable channel 16, Global Destiny Cable channel 28, Cablelink channel 48 and Cignal Digital TV channel 21.

According to the Talk TV website schedule, the show airs on:
Saturdays: 11 am
Sundays: 3 a.m. and 7:30 pm
Mondays: 7 am and 5:30 pm

I saw part of the first episode aired last July 1, 2012 at 7:30 pm. The episode is about his travels to the Bicol region.

First episode was quite interesting. If you have not seen the series before, I think its a good show for photography enthusiasts especially if you are into travel photography.

See In Mono: A new Black and White Only Photography Facebook Group

There is a new facebook photography group whose common interest is their love for Black and While Photography. The group is called See in Mono.

In their About page, they mention:

This is an OPEN-GENRE and NON-POLITICAL group. This page was created to showcase some of the best and exceptional black and white images captured by its members around the world. It is our aim to elevate the awareness of every photographer and that of viewing public that the world can also be viewed without colors and still as beautiful, if not more. It is this group's united motto..
...." only the best, when good is simply not enough".

It was born out of the idea of Jo Cayas whose aim was building a bridge worldwide for mono/black and white enthusiasts. He said although there are already existing similar groups in Facebook, he wanted the Filipinos to lead and be active with this new group. Thus the group begun.

He solicited the help of fellow enthusiasts. Erick G. Mendiola created the Closed Facebook group and added Jo Cayas and together they initially administered and moderated the group. The group was really growing fast so they solicited the help of fellow enthusiast like Jeff Mercader, David Mar Quinto who are already popular with their Black and White portfolio postings in their walls, various groups including Street Photography groups where monochrome photos are popular. Currently as of today, July 1, there are 11 admins.

The membership has now grown to 352 members in just a week and still growing.

The best thing about the group is it's OPEN-GENRE and NON-POLITICAL. Atmosphere is relax. A good place to view amazing works of art in monochrome photography. The varied genre ranging from complicated Street Photography to the simple portraits and minimalist landscapes. It's an eye candy in Mono.

Just last June 30, the have created a public Fan Page with the same name See in Mono. This Fan Page showcases the best of the photos selected by the curators of the group.

Visit the their fan page and enjoy the works of art of Black and White photography enthusiasts. If you like it and want to be part of their group, join by adding your self to the group See in Mono.

Coverage of The Wild Side Open Photoshoot Competition-1st Leg

The 1st leg of the Wild Side Open Photoshoot Competition organized by O-N International Production Phil. Corp. in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, and various Provincial governments was held June 23-24, 2012 at the island of Alabat, Quezon.

The Travel

The exciting two day excursion to the scenic landscape of the town of Alabat, Quezon started at the meeting point at the Penthouse of Jay-Ar Rosales, president of the O-N International Production Phil. Corp., in Pasay City. Leaving there at 4 a.m. traveling on a chartered air-conditioned bus towards the port of Atimonan, Quezon with one stop to pick-up the other crews of the event.

We arrived at the Atimonan Port by 8:40 a.m. and travelled by pumpboat by 9:15 a.m. to the island of Alabat.

We arrived at the Port of Alabat around 10 a.m. The island was expecting us with the welcoming poster of the event hanged in the port's waiting area.

Around 10:30 a.m., we arrived at the La Villaneuva Beach Resort after trans versing the mountain slopes by tricycle.

We had lunch of fresh seafood that includes adobong pusit and sinigang na hipon. You can really taste the difference in freshness of the daily catch. There was also the refreshing pure buko juice.

Everybody settled in their assign rooms and cottages for some rest and prepared for the afternoon photoshoot.

The Photoshoot - Location 1

It was almost 3 p.m. when we went to the 1st location of the shoot: the rocks near the resort. I was first with Jun, one of the photographer contestants and followed his action at the 1st location.

On the way to the 2nd location, I saw Amor, another contestant, and captured in video a portion of his lively shoot.

At 3:50 p.m., we took a banca to the next location.

It started drizzling as we left to the second location. After a short 5 minutes banca trip, we arrived at the 2nd location. Fortunately the rain stopped.

The tide was still low so the banca anchored on an almost knee deep waters and we walked to the shore.
I was again with Jun and documented his shoot at the 2nd location.

The 2nd location embodies the concept of this Open Photoshoot Competition. Beauties in Nature!
The beauty of the Philippines’ natural environment showcased in a photo competition that combines nature and beauties in fashion in one composition.

3rd Photo Video Expo Coverage: Framed Shots Exhibit

When I visted the 3rd Photo Video Expo last June 14, 2012, I noticed a big exhibit between Hallway 1 & 2. It was the exhibit of Framed Shots Camera Club (FSCC). It is a camera club based in Manila, Philippines. It was founded in October 1994 by a group of photography enthusiasts who just finished their basic photography workshop. It is affiliated with the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation (FPPF).

One thing different in their presentation is their style of display. The photos were done as triptych, using 3 panels.

I visited the Bawal Mag Shoot Dito (BMSD) Pilipinas booth at Booth 202 at the 3rd Photo Video Expo last June 14, 2012 at the SMX Convention Center.

They have cosplayers and models to liven-up the booth. You can strike a pose and take photo of them or with them.

I visited the booth of Philippine Center for Creative Imaging (PCCI) at the 3rd Photo Video Expo Coverage on June 14, 2012. PCCI is country's premier training center for digital media and photography. At the expo, they were conducting mini lectures.

One of the highlights of the 3rd Photo Video Expo is the photo exhibition. Different photography groups will be showcasing their members works.

One of the photography groups exhibiting is Chasing Light Batch 11. Chasing Light is the premiere landscape photography workshop in the Philippines. It is facilitated by Canon Brand Ambassadors Edwin Martinez and Jay Jallorina. Batch 11 is one of the batches of photographers who took the workshop.

I went to the expo on June 14, 2012. I was invited by Cathy Javier, a member of group, to visit their exhibit. During my visit to their exhibition, I managed to interview one of their members, Paul Resurreccion.

One of the highlights of the 3rd Photo Video Expo is the photo exhibition. Different photography groups will be showcasing their members works.

As a street photography enthusiast, one of the group exhibits that I look forward to seeing is the exhibit of Usapang Kalye (UK), a Filipino street photography forum.

I went to the expo on the opening day, June 14, 2012.

UK's exhibit panels are located just before the entrance of Hall 2 opposite the registration area.

Don't miss UK's exhibit when you visit the 3rd Photo Video Expo. Their exhibit alone is worth the trip to SMX. Also, visit their booth at Booth # 203 which is just besides the Bawal Mag Shoot Dito (BMSD) booth.

GAMING
ABS CBN Interactive also brings on the biggest gaming event of the year, Amped Fest 2012. They will launch of the most awaited Relic of Mystra and Version 4 releases of online gaming flagship brands, Shaiya and WarRock. The new gaming roster for 2012 as well as an Android and java mobile gaming portal will also be unveiled. GM Barbie Lee and a host of other models will also cosplay favourite Amped characters. Kapamilya (ABS-CBN Channel 2) celebrities will also make special appearances for the Kapamilya gamers.

Amped Fest will also serve both the culmination of Netopia Cafe Wars and the opening of JBlaze Cup 2012, where winners are sent to Korea to compete with other international online gaming champions.

COSPLAY

The biggest crowd drawer for the convention is cosplay, and this year all costumed heroes revolve around the Cosplay Universe. The Philippine Toycon features a huge space where cosplay fans can enjoy photo-ops in six huge themed exhibit spaces: The Anime Planet, Superhero Stars, Movie Nebula, Toy Supernova, Gaming Galaxy and Kids Constellation, all of which make up the Cosplay Universe. Aside from being photo backdrops, the Cosplay Universe will also be the biggest Cosplay competition in the country which will feature celebrity guest judges from the international Cosplay circuit and where contestants vie for big prizes in six cosplay categories. This year there will be two stage platforms!

TOY COLLECTIONS

The TOYCON Gallery will be held inside the Megatrade function rooms which will serve as the museum of the event.

The event’s main draw is the huge dealers’ floor where anything and everything pop-culture can be found and purchased at bargain prices. Almost 180 booths will be open to sell pop apparel, cosplay accessories, superhero merchandise, fantasy and sci-fi collectibles, comics, cards, and of course, all sorts of toys overflowing from action figures, transformers, diecast cars, robots and high-end statues and 1/6 scale Hot Toys.

ART

The convention also brings together the best assembly of local and international artists to exhibit much anticipated work. Seattle-based Hawaiian designer Arron “Angry Woebots” Martin shows off his brand of pop graffiti and design in an exhibit of his world famous panda art which has graced museum walls, skateboards, vinyl figures and books. Friends from Komikon will also bring in the best of our very own roster of artists: Heubert Khan Michael, Lui Antonio, Gilbert Monsanto, Lyndon Gregorio, Ariel Atienza, Lei Muncal, Jon Zamar & Sherry Zamar. The artist panel will be on hand to sign comics, do sketches and fan art and sample the best local indie and mainstream titles.

ESSAY - A Basic Photojournalism Workshop by Philippines Institute of Architects Photography Club (PIAPC) conducted by Edwin Tuyay last June 9, 2012 at the PIAPC HQ located at 65 East Capitol Drive, Pasig. It was attended by almost 20 participants.

The training started 9am. There was a coffee break, and a lunch break with yummy Chow King Lunch. At around 3pm, the lecture concluded for coffee break, and group hug. At around 3:30 pm, the group went for a photo walk towards EDSA.

The first day of the workshop is the lecture part which was held that day. The workshop was quite interesting. The essence of what Photojournalism, its code of ethics, captioning, how to make photo essays, how to get assignments from foreign publications are few of the topics discussed. Edwin, also showed his work and shared his experience while shooting them. He shared very good insights and tips about the field based on his extensive experience as a photojournalist for more two decades. An assignment of shooting an environmental portrait and a photo essay were given as well.

The second part of the workshop will be on June 16. This is where the two assignments given will be for discussion and critique by Edwin and a guest photojournalist.

It was a really fruitful day of learning for me and the other participants. Everyone is looking forward to doing their assignments and passing it for discussion and critique on the next meeting.

The Wild Side: An Open Photoshoot Competition

O-N International Production Phil. Corp., in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, the Province of Quezon, and the Town of Alabat, Quezon, presents "The Wild Site Open Photoshoot Competition", featuring Beauties in Nature.

This is open to all photographers nationwide to compete in this Open Photoshoot Competition to be held on:

Photo Shoot 1 & 2: June 23 and July 14, 2012 (La-Villanueva Beach Resort, Alabat Island, Quezon Province)
Photo Shoot 3: July 28, 2012 (Cavite)
Photo Shoot 4: August 11, 2012 (Batangas)
Photo Shoot 5: August 18, 2012 (Laguna)
Photo Shoot 6: August 25, 2012 (Rizal Province)

CONCEPT

The beauty of the Philippines’ natural environment will be showcased in a photo competition that combines nature and fashion in one composition. The concept borrows from the style of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. The concept will put focus on the natural beauty of the Philippines in a novel way and, consequently, generate attraction to the various natural wonders of the country. It will test the mettle and competence of the participating photographers, motivating them to use full creativity in capturing the beauty of the Philippines in a refreshing way.

The contest, will feature the photographers’ own models to be shot against the backdrop of Alabat Island in Province of Quezon. If the photographer does not have a model, a model will be provided upon request.

The photographers will have a chance to show their skill in any of the three (3) categories determined by the fashion components that the models will be wearing, namely:

Two-Piece Swimsuit
Intimate Fashion (Lingerie/Underwear)
Sports/Rugged Wear

Note: Photographer's models will provide the aforementioned outfits themselves.

Photographers will submit only one of his/her best photos through memory cards to the contest committee at the end of the photo shoot day without any computer digital manipulation. In camera editing is allowed.

The entries will be judge according to the following criteria:

Technical Proficiency – 35%
Artistic Merit – 35%
Over-all Composition – 15%
Interpretation of Contest Theme – 15%

The Top (3) three winners will be awarded giveaways and cash prizes

1st Place P50,000.00 cash + P50,000 worth of goods = P100,000
2nd Place P75,000.00 (50% cash + 50% goods)
3rd Place P50,000.00 (50% cash + 50% goods)

EXECUTION

The first part of the competition takes the competing photographers and their models (one per photographer.

On the photoshoot dates, makeup artists and hairstylists will be provided to do the styling as per the photographer’s concept. Each model will be allotted a particular time frame for the hair and makeup, during which styling must be finished. The sequence of the models for their hair and makeup sessions will be determined through the drawing of lots by the participating photographers. The first hair and makeup session will start at 4:00 am on the day of the shoot. In case the photographer wants to bring his/her own hair and makeup team, they may do so at their own expense.

Photographers have the whole day to shoot and have to submit their best photo to the committee by 7 pm.

On August 31 and September 1, 2012, the second part of the competition will be the trade fair awarding night-cum-photo exhibit of the entries of the participating photographers and party to be held at the open concert ground in PAGCOR NAIA, Parañaque City. The event will be a trade fair with fashion show and performances by some of the country’s premier rock bands and celebrity guest performers.

Registration fee is only P 3,500 pesos. The registration fee covers for the photographer's and his/her model's:

Registration fee
Transport from agreed rendezvous point to the resort venue and back
Accommodation on sharing basis at the resort/venue if overnight stay is required
Food during the stay at the resort

ESSAY - A Basic Photojournalism Workshop by PIAPC

The Philippine Institute of Architects Photography Club (PIAPC) will be conducting a Basic Photojournalism Workshop on two Saturdays June 9 & 16, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The workshop will be held at the 4th Floor, PIAPC Lounge, Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA) Center located at # 65 East Capitol Drive, Barrio Kapitolyo, Pasig City.

Edwin Tuyay, one of the industry's leading photojournalist & wedding photographer, will be conducting the workshop. He has worked with Bloomberg News, Asia Week Magazine, and the Manila Chronicle to name a few as a photojournalist.

Daan Photowalk - Sneak Peak Avenue

Daan (Street), a Street Photography (SP) group, is having a photowalk on May 19 from 8am onwards along Taft Avenue. They are inviting photographers who wants to get into this exciting genre of SP. Seasoned and all levels of street photographers are also welcome for camaraderie enjoying the common passion for SP.

Meeting place will be at the Plaza Salamanca on the corner of Taft Avenue and T.M. Kalaw at 8 a.m. where participants will be oriented about the photowalk.

The first leg of the walk will have the theme of "Overcoming Fear in Street Photography". Some tips will be given by experienced street photographers. Armed with the tips, the photowalk then commences.

A pit stop for snacks somewhere in Herran and some review of photos taken in the 1st leg. A short talk on tips and techniques in creating great street photographs in preparation for the second leg of the walk.

The walk will culminate somewhere in Vito Cruz (venue to be announced) for lunch (KKB) and orientation about the upcoming seminar of Eric Kim in Manila. There will be also a c & c session / open table discussion for photos taken during the PW and Q & A as well.

Bawal Mag Shoot Dito (BMSD) Pilipinas Ayala Malls Photowalk

On May 11 2012, Bawal Mag Shoot Dito (BMSD) Only in the Philippines held their Ayala Malls Photowalk. This photowalk in the Greenbelt Malls in Makati is also a protest walk to denounce the strict rules of photography in the Ayala Malls. BMSD is advocating for more relaxed rules on photography in the malls and public places open to the public especially with DSLR users.

The assembly started at 11 am at the McDonalds in Paseo de Roxas in front of the Asian Institute of Management in Makati. Around 11:30 am, they assemble in front of the restaurant to start the photowalk. With the press present interviewing Mel Cortez, the founder of BMSD, the Ayala security personnel were trying to stop the media from using their video because they did not have any permit to shoot. After sometime, the issue was resolved and the photowalk started around 11:50 am.

The photography enthusiasts walked around and inside the Greenbelt Malls and surrounding areas. One of the spots they stopped was at the mural of Jaime Zobel's photos. It was an IRONY that Jaime is into photography yet the Ayala Mall's policy toward DSLR users does not sympathize much towards the photographers.

They passed by Ayala Museum, Phil. Stock Exchange Plaza and then proceeded to the Ninoy Aquino Monument at the corner of Paseo De Roxas and Ayala Avenue for group shots. The walk did not have much of the usual resistance from the security personnel. I think they have been instructed to allow the photographers to shoot freely. There was freedom contrary to what DSLR photographers experience usually when they shoot in Makati especially if you include buildings in your photos.

The second part of the photowalk was to join and support the protestors in front of the Chinese Embassy at The World Center, Sen. Gil Puyat Avenue to protest China's bullying of the Philippines over the issue of sovereignty of Scarborough Shoal. The photowalk concluded there.

Although small in numbers due to the photowalk being held during a work day, this photowalk was a significant milestone for BMSD. After it's accomplishments in putting into light photographers right to shoot in public places, this adds to the lists of photowalk protests done in Luneta, Intramuros, QC Circle, and SM MOA. It's definitely still an uphill struggle and a long way to go.

As a DSLR users, definitely you have encountered problems with mall security not allowing you to take pictures. Even DSLR are so common nowadays, it still have the stigma that you are a professional photographer or you will use your picture for commercial purposes when you take a picture with it.

Samahan Ng Mga Litratistang Pinoy (SLP) Photo Contest Results

Samahan Ng Mga Litratistang Pinoy (SLP) Manila Inc., a SEC registered photography club headed by Edwin Pranada, had a on the spot photo contest last May 13 2012 held in the Quiapo Area in Manila. Since it was Mother's Day, the theme was "Mother's Day"! Around 30 photographers joined the contest.

The photographers were given 2 hours to shoot for the competition around the colorful busy district of Quiapo. The submission and judging was held at Mang Inasal at Evangelista St. Entries submitted were given to the lab for printing.

Mr. Dante del Mundo and Ms. Claudine Callanta, seasoned professional photographers, of the Rizal Digital Photographer Association, were the judges of the competition.

One of the highlights of the competition was the live judging and critique. The judges selected the pictures that did not make the cut. They called the photographers who owned the photo, explained why the photo does not work and gave them advise as well on how to improve the composition!
