As summer is officially on us, I get to partake in one of my favorite summer pastimes…pool watching. This is only the second summer that I have lived in an apartment complex with a community pool, but I learned a lot from last year. Always bring sunglasses…it helps you watch better and always position your chair farther back so everyone is in your sights (I stole this picture from a website…so this is not the shenanigans that go on at my pool).

If you are lucky enough to live in an apartment complex with a pool you will notice that most of the people fall into these categories:

Creepy (out of work/rich) old guy: This guy has feathered hair and is completely tan. In the late 40s/50s age range. He will be at the pool 95 % of the time and he knows everyone who comes by their first name. This person normally drives a really expensive car, which doesn’t make any sense because you live in an apartment complex in a suburb. Note: Could be seen with girl 15/20 years younger!

I have experienced this person at both of my pools. This year the guy has a young hot/trashy chick with him. I have spied on them for 3 days and I have been unable to figure out their relationship. At first glance, they seemed like a couple but after listening on their conversation he talked about banging a chick the night before…

The Pool Authority: This is normally a young guy, the biggest and strongest out of his friends. He will be seen having conversations with friends and walk across the pool while continuing to talk. He acts as if it is his pool and we are all visitors. ALWAYS CARRIES BEER! Can be seen working “the grill” and offering up hamburgers, hot dogs, and beers to strangers. Note: Also, can be seen with “minority” friend who agrees with everything and tries hard to be extra cool.

My “pool authority” this year is so classic. His Asian sidekick always has sunglasses on…even in doors, has spiked hair, and walks straight up and with a bounce in his step. Actaully, I ran into the pool authority at Supercuts yesterday and he was just stopping in to get his eyebrows waxed…with sidekick by his side.

The Teenager(s): Generally travels in groups of 3 or more. Features are self-explanatory. Note: Don’t get caught looking at under 18…especially if mother is accompanying.

The Old Couple: Woman has a tendency to read a book or magazine. She is happy just to get out of the house. Men wears shirt, hat, and sunglasses and is starring at any piece of ass that is under the age of 50. Note: Can be there for long hours, snoring optional.

The Young Couple: Kids optional. Marriage needed. Woman is in first 1 piece bathing suit of her life. Man looks pissed and wonders what happened to his skinny bride. Man starring at any piece of ass that is under the age of 50 (see above). Note: If with kids, Mother and Children have “Cheetos mouth and hands” and Dad wishes he would have worn a condom, or just left.

I still got it person: Man or Woman. In mid to late 20s. Woman is trying to squeeze in college bathing suit but fat rolls are bunching up anywhere. Can be seen pushing out chest and sucking in stomach. Man has on teenager style board shirts and is frequently sucking in stomach, but normally loses battle as stomach hangs over bulging velcro fly. Note: I am definitely guilty of being “that guy”

Enjoy the pools!

As I’m writing this, the Philadelphia Sixers are tied 2-2 with the Detroit Pistons in the opening round of the 2008 NBA playoffs. I haven’t watched more than two Sixers’ regular season games this year, but I’ve been watching the playoffs closely…and I’ve seen enough!

Andre

Iguodala is the “Worst” Best Player on any team in the playoffs. Because of that, and the disappointing 3rd quarter of Game 4, the Sixers will lose in 6 games to the Pistons. I can remember back to the Sixers draft day in 2007. We debated with Phil Jazzner of the Philadelphia Inquirer about how good the Sixers were going to be. I’ve said since the beginning of this season, that the Sixers were going to be on the cusp of the playoffs (7th seed) and would continue in mediocrity for the next 3-5 years (remains to be seen). Here’s the problem: the Sixers have some talented players who play really hard but they lack the talented shooter(s) to make it deep in the playoffs. For arguments sake, let’s say they pull off the major upset and beat the Pistons. Do they really have a chance to win the NBA title? No! And to me the problem starts right at the top.

Iguodala is one of the top 5 slashers/scorers in the game. Once he makes his way to the basket, there aren’t many people that can stop him. He may also be the worst shooter on the Sixers, and it’s becoming apparent in this series with the Pistons. In the playoffs, the interior defense gets tighter and the lanes get smaller. Iguodala can’t get to the basket with ease and the Pistons are allowing him to shoot. You have to give credit to this young Sixers team. Amazingly they’ve won TWO games despite Iquodala’s poor shooting (he has shot multiple air-balls in this series). Andre’s high arcing, closely defended, fade away from 20 feet makes me shake my head in disbelief…it almost comical because the ball has no chance as soon as it leaves his hand.

It’s kind of ironic that the Sixers have built their team similar to these Pistons: small and fast, play as a team, defense wins championships mentality. The missing piece for the Sixers is that great shooter like Richard Hamilton or Chauncy Billips.

My advice for Iggy; keep running, slash to the basket, and only shoot when you are wide open (kind of like Strap in Hoosiers).

The most pathetic thing in the world is ONE guy sitting at the bar in a Hooters eating wings, while being sober. And I did it last night. It IS worse than going to a strip club by yourself because at least the lights are off and no one can see you.

Now, I have spent some time at the Hooters in Atlantic City, drunk of my ass, eating at the bar after midnight but I never dreamed that I would do what I did last night.

While I was sitting at home watching Wrestlemania 19, I get a call from my girlfriend that she is going to see Camelot featuring Lou Diamond Phillips (He has fallen very, very far since La Bamba) in downtown Providence, RI. She invited me, but I would rather lick cat litter for an hour then suffer through that bullshit. So her and friend went.

It was very exciting when I got the news that I would be on my own for dinner, because we have shared almost every meal since I moved to Rhode Island a month ago. I knew exactly where I wanted to go! The previous night, I had watched the Hooters Dream Girl pageant that had commercials of those big, juicy wings…it was all I wanted. Now when I was living in Philly, I use to spend my Saturdays picking up wings at the local Hooters then pounding beers and watching old school wrestling while eating those delicious pieces of Chicken Wing Heaven.

I never ate at Hooters by myself because the people that do look pretty pathetic. Normally, I would drink a beer at the bar while I order my wings to go…a technique that was passes down to me by Scotty.

So last night, I am on my own and I travel 10 minutes to the only Hooters in Rhode Island. When I walk into the restaurant, I was overwhelmed with emotion seeing those bright orange shorts on slightly overweight girls, and giant boobs that were accompanied by below average faces.

I was approached by a waitress that offered a mug of overflowing beer and I accepted with a big smile on my face and as I was making my final decision on my order…it happened. She informed me that it was all you can eat wing night. I had to wipe away the tears of joy because for $10.99, I could get all I can eat wings and curly fries. They start you off with 15 wings and curly fries and bring out more when you need it. Now, I knew I wouldn’t eat more than 15 wings because by wing #9 you realize how disgusting they are anyway. But the 15 wings and curly fries was the best deal of the week, so I told the waitress I would have an order to go. “Sorry, you have to eat here for the deal!” I froze with panic. I looked around and realized that a man looking like John Mark Karr was sitting two stools away eating BY HIMSELF and 4 stools in the other direction a man that was easily 350 pounds was eating BY HIMSELF. I didn’t know what to do. I pretended that I forgot my wallet so I could walk out to the car and make a decision. I pondered passing on the deal of a lifetime…but I just couldn’t do it. So I stayed

I bellied up to the bar, I drank my beer, I ate my wings, I played Sports Trivia at the bar (Got 1st Place too!), and my lows got lower!

And of course, I had diarrhea an hour later at home!

Fox 29 is consistently in the bottom half of the local news war in Philadelphia and could use the free publicity and curiosity that Lane attracts to spike their ratings. Lane could bring the looks and controversy that has become so well associated with News Corp./Fox News.

Could you imagine the 5 o’clock newscast with co-anchors Alycia Lane and Kerrie-Lee Halkett. It would be the most talked about and most watched news program in the Delaware Valley. Guys would tune in to check out the two “model-like” anchors and women would watch to find out what the women are wearing and to critique their styles and fashion.

Alycia Lane’s reputation is severely damage and Fox could probably get her at a steal because of the incident with the NYC police officer. I’m sure Lane could even turn her incident into a great “sweeps” piece where she can beg for forgiveness and show her embarrassment over the situation.

If you are Fox 29, this is an opportunity that is worth the risk. You can test her out just on the 5pm newscast as long as she is willing to apologize and show that she is reformed. Trust me, Alycia Lane is hot and that helps the public forgiveness factor.

Your welcome Fox 29!

The New England Patriots loss to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII is one of the biggest upset or “chokes” in sports history. Some will debate the difference between an upset or a choke. But if you don’t win a game that you should, there’s no difference in my mind. This got me thinking - did the Patriots just commit the biggest choke in sports history?

While creating this list, I took into account the historical significance of the event and the overall impact it had in sports history.

Honorable mention:

Philadelphia Phillies’ Mitch Williams: World Series ending Home Run pitch to Joe Carter (1993)

Seattle Supersonics: The first #1 seed to lose in the opening round of the playoffs to a #8 seed, Denver Nuggets (1994)

Gary Anderson (1998 Minnesota Vikings NFC Championship)

The Vikings’ kicker went 35 of 35 kicking field goals during the regular season and missed a 38 yarder with minutes remaining in the 4th quarter which would have given the Vikings a 10 point lead. Instead the Viks lose in overtime and become the first team in NFL history to go 15-1 in the regular season and not make it to the Super Bowl.

9. Mike Tyson (February 11th, 1990)

James “Buster” Douglas was a 42 to 1 underdog, but caught Tyson with a right uppercut in the 10th round to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World. Douglas would lose his only title defense to Evander Holyfield and Tyson would eventually have an ear for dinner.

8. Russian Olympic Hockey Team (1980 Winter Olympics)

Uncle Ivan Koloff would not be proud as the professional Russians take on a bunch of college hockey playing Americans. The Russians had won 8 out of the last 9 gold medals in Olympic Ice Hockey and had beaten the USA team 10-3 just weeks earlier.

7. Chris Webber (1993 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship)

The “time-out” with no time-outs remaining gave the Michigan Wolverines a technical foul and loss of possession. It was the second year in a row that the Wolverines lost in the NCAA finals.

6. Greg Norman (1996 Masters)

A career tortured by chokes, Norman went into the final round of the Masters with a 6 stroke lead. He shot a final round, 78, to lose by 5 strokes to Nick Faldo. Norman never won a “green jacket,” but had way cooler hair than everyone.

(tie)5. Jean Van De Velde (1999 British Open)

This unknown went into the 18th hole of the British Open needing just a double-bogey, 6, on the final hole to win. After one terrible decision after another, including an attempted hit out of water, Van De Velde shot a triple bogey which forced a playoff that he eventually loss to Paul Lawerie.

(tie)5. The 1985 Georgetown Hoyas Men’s Basketball team

The Hoyas were the defending national champions, number one seed, and ten point favorite going into the NCAA Finals against the Villanova Wildcats. The Wildcats shot 22-28 from the field and became the lowest (8th) seeded team to win the national championship in a 66-64 victory. Their team shooting percentage,78.6%, remains an NCAA tournament record.

4. Scott Norwood (Super Bowl XXV)

“Wide-Right” Norwood missed a 47 yard game winning field in the final seconds of the Super Bowl. This lead to the Buffalo Bills first of four consecutive loses in the Super Bowl, but gave us “Ray Finkle” in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

3. Bill Buckner and the Boston Red Soxs (1986)

Do you really need an explanation?

2. New York Yankees (2004)

The most famous curse in sports history was broken in the biggest comeback in MLB history. No team had ever rallied from an 0-3 deficit and the Yankees looked to be invincible but a 9th inning rally in game 4, a bloody sock, and a grand slam all helped the Red Sox pull off the greatest feat in baseball.

1. New England Patriots (07-08)

The Patriots were on their pursuit of perfection, the Giants were just happy to be there. The high powered Pats offense broke numerous records throughout the season while Eli Manning barely kept his job. The Giants stopped history with a 17-14 Super Bowl XLII victory, David Tyree becomes the new Bucky Dent and the Pats lose the most watched game in NFL history.

Since I have moved back in with my parents, a bunch of people have told me that I need to watch Grandma’s Boy. I really didn’t want to watch it because a movie that reflects my current “loser life” did not sound like entertainment to me. But it happened to come on HBO and the screen is so nice on my parents’ 42″ flat screen TV AND my mom had just bought fresh cold cuts so I decided to check it out.

Although, I felt like a piece of shit because the main character is named Alex too, the movie is fucking hilarious. I am still laughing at the scene when Alex jerks off on his friends mom and he yells out, “I can’t stop, it fells so good.”

The worst part about my life is that certain aspects of the movie are playing out in my real life. I finally got my XBOX 360 back from Microsoft’s repair shop yesterday, so I was pumped to finally play the new Guitar Hero. My mom saw me playing Guitar Hero III and she asked if I could teach her. She ended up playing for over an hour. Eariler today, my dad walked in front of me when I was trying to play “Cult of Personality” and he fucked up my perfect score.

I have developed a list of rules to make sure my parents don’t bother me while living at home.

I only drink when they drink OR after they go to sleep.

Otherwise they will monitor every sip and start hassling me to get a job instead of being “lazy and a drunk.”

I make sure I am not playing video games when they come home from work.

Even if I had just started playing, it looks like I have done nothing all day and they will hassle me to ”do something important.”

Shower and change clothes from pervious day

Self explanatory

Put dishes in the dishwasher/Bring in Trash cans

This may not seem like a big deal but it can sometimes trigger a “domino effect” of shit.

Offer to do something at least once a week

It can make you seem like you want to help out

If you follow those rules, you should be able to get by living with your parents for a short period of time. Remember these are rules to follow for short-term living, not long-term!!

So I have been requested to blog my daily activity. This seemed like a good idea at first, but the more I think about it, why did I want to see in writing how little I’ve been doing. Now, even though it took me forever to write, I knew that I would beat Scotty.
There is nothing extremely interesting to report. Married life is fine, my house is really clean, the Flyers on NHL 07 for XBOX are tops in the league, my guitar hero skills are at their peak, and I’ve decided to quit smoking. I started taking Chantix, the miracle pill that helps you quit. Should be interesting…

I’ve also found that a stiff Captain and Coke in the morning can leave you less full than having a few beers with breakfast.

Stay tuned for the Holiday Podcast, where we will talk about the rude customer Scotty encountered at the XMAS Tree Farm, how my wife is going to be surprised this XMAS when there are no presents under the pole, and how Alex’s Suicide Watch has been upgraded to Orange!

The Talk may have failed but the Rock is definitely not any better.

I have listened to WYSP the past couple of days and I think the Rock is going to have trouble succeeding as greatly as it once did at WYSP. Here is why:

Terrible/Old rock bands – The state of rock music right now is very average. The best bands are the same bands that were putting out music during the 90s. Modern Rock/Alternative stations popped up everywhere during the 90s because rock was BOOMING. The grunge era in the early 90s and the heavy rock/rap of the late 90s produced some of the greatest rock music since the late 60s and 70s. The music was in demand and rock stations benefited. Right now, there are some decent rock bands but nothing that gets the general public excited. Despite a few newer songs, WYSP is playing the same music they were playing from 1995-2001. People are just not craving rock like they once did.

There are THREE rock stations in Philadelphia - When rock was booming in the 90s there was a market big enough to have 3 rock stations in Philly. But as the popularity for rock declined in the early 2000s, one of those stations (Y-100) flipped because there just wasn’t the demand anymore. WMMR, WYSP, and 104.5 are splitting the rock audience into 3, which means lower shares for everyone…someone has to give, and it wont be WMMR.

No Howard Stern – Howard Stern was a radio phenomenon that MAY never be seen again. Although I don’t have the exact numbers or proof, when we worked at WYSP people in management who had been there for years told us that after Howard Stern, WMMR would consistently beat WYSP the rest of the day. Stern would generate such a huge audience during mornings (5 hours) that it would mask the below average ratings in other dayparts. Like I said, no proof just what we were told.

More Choices –Unless you wanted to pay $16 for a CD , WYSP use to be the only place to hear the newest rock music. But between Ipods, the Internet, and satellite radio there are so many choices now that rock radio is not a necessity to hear your favorite and newest songs.

I think Kidd Chris will do great in mornings at WYSP but I hope management gives him time to try and take down some of the other morning giants, because it WILL take time. Also, it has to be hard because he has a lot of pressure to carry the station because it has been in the dumps for so long.

I understand that I might be biased against the rock so here are some good aspects of WYSP going back to music.

Cheaper – Radio is a business, and it is all about the money. Running a talk station you have to pay A LOT of money in salaries. Playing music saves WYSP hundreds of thousands of dollars in salary.

Never LOW ratings – Playing music will generate at the worst, average ratings. You don’t have to give music time to develop like you do a talk show. People recognize songs and listen. WMMR had such high ratings the past couple of years because they were the only game in town but neither of the 3 rock stations will EVER see numbers like that as long as there is competition.

I STILL believe that Talk radio is the future of terrestrial radio. What makes Talk radio so great is the fact that you force listeners to tune in everyday for new content. Music radio plays the same songs over and over again and if you enjoy music you can get a better and more personalized selection of your favorite music from the Internet, Ipods, and satellite radio. Talk radio is fresh EVERY SINGLE DAY. You cannot get it later, if you missed a great talk radio show then you missed out. So people will tune in as much as possible to make sure they don’t miss the hilarious or informational radio moment.

The Free-Fm format was not as bad as everyone made it out to be, it was just poorly executed. I don’t think I need to explain how poor of a choice David Lee Roth was for Howard Stern’s replacement, but there were plenty of other bad decisions that CBS made along the way. Here are some:

Opie and Anthony’s split show – I think Opie and Anthony are extremely talented broadcasters and they could have carried this format if they had ONE full show on FM. O&A’s hardcore fans listened on XM and had a disdain for the FM portion of the show because they felt it was watered down. O&A’s FM show was also stopped right in the middle of prime-time 9am. If they were able to continue to 10am or 11am they would have drawn huge numbers. The fact is that stations live and die with their morning and afternoon drives. We could have had 90% of the night-time audience and it would have barely made a blip in the ratings.

Lack of Normal Dayparts - I strongly believe in the traditional dayparts. Mornings 6am –10/11am, Middays from 10/11am to 3pm, Afternoons 3pm-7pm, Nights from 7pm-11pm. I think jamming one or two hour shows here and there over saturate a station, and gives the audience too many voices to listen to. It is impossible for those shows to gain traction in such a sort amount of time.

Average Talent - If you ever listened to some of the talk shows throughout the county that were put on Free-Fm stations, they were awful. One bad talk show can ruin a station, you know the old saying you are only as strong as your weakest link.

One of the biggest grips we had when we came to WYSP, was that it took 6 months for us to stop playing music. We always felt that it hurt our show and made us appear weak to the audience. Here we were on a talk station and we are the only show playing music. We use to get calls EVERY night, complaining about too much music or complaining that we were talking too much. For those first 6 months we were alienating the audience, for the people who wanted talk, we played to much music and for the people that wanted the music we talked too much. Talk about pissing EVERYONE off.

We truly felt that our show was starting to take off before we left because of a couple of key things that we noticed.

From February to July, we went from 23rd place to 16th place, it was nothing to write home about but it was improving. In August, which we felt was the time our show was starting to hit its grove (Harry Potter incident) the show ended up in 5th place (that also included an Eagles Preseason game so we don’t know exactly what our impact was)

When we first started, we would get sent to concerts and people would constantly yell at us to play more music. In August at Ozzfest, 15 out of 16 people (we kept count and talked about it on the air) came up and talked about how much they loved the show. We were expecting to get yelled at our whole time at Ozzfest but instead we took a boatload of pictures with fans and signed autographs.

And for a show that a lot of people think is finished in radio or can only succeed in a small market, I think we have a lot going for us. We have some important people looking to land us a job somewhere, and in just 10 months at WYSP our stock rose within CBS. We were offered a morning job at another CBS station that we turned down in July and we were told that during our time at WYSP that we should not worry about our ratings and focus more on developing our show because “we would not be doing nights forever.”

We are excited about our next opportunity and for the chance to tell all of the critics and naysayers to “BEAT IT.”

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

I had 9 Sam Adams Winter Lager yesterday during Thanksgiving. Yeah, Yeah!
