I love a good patriotic craft, and today I have a super fun and EASY patriotic craft project.

This Uncle Sam’s hat vase is made entirely from scrapbook paper!

Seriously, the hardest part about this red, white, and blue decor is deciding whether you want Uncle Sam’s hat to sit upright or upside down.

(I still can’t decide which way I like better. I would love your input!)

Uncle Sam’s Hat Vase Supplies:

12×12 Glitter Scrapbook Paper

Glitter Tape

Embellishments

Stapler

You don’t need many supplies for this craft project, but I am pushing the need for glitter.

When I think of July 4th I think of sparklers and fireworks which makes me think: GLITTER!!

So for this project I am using some of the glitter papers from American Crafts as well as their glitter tape and the Pebbles glitter stars.

You can use solid sheets of glitter, but I’m choosing to use some more decorative glitter paper.

The red strip glitter paper is perfect for Uncle Sam’s hat.

The blue polka dot glitter paper helps add a touch of whimsy to the brim of the hat.

Uncle Sam’s Hat Vase: The Crown

Uncle Sam’s hat is traditionally shown as red and white striped so I added white glitter tape to the red striped glitter paper.

Next, roll the paper (I have kept it at its original 12×12 size) into a cylinder and staple it in place.

Wrap one end of the cylinder with blue glitter tape.

I did 3 rows of tape.

Add the red and silver Pebbles stars on top of the blue tape.

These stars are self adhesive and stick great to the glitter!

Uncle Sam’s Hat Vase: The Brim

Roll another sheet of 12×12 paper (it does not have to be glitter paper, any cardstock will do, but I used blue glitter paper) and place it inside the cylinder you already have.

Now the inside of our vase looks nice!

Take the paper you are going to use for the brim of the hat and cut out two 6.5″ circles.

Then cut out a 3″ circle in the center of each of the 6.5″ circles and adhere them together back to back.

Glue the cylinder (blue glitter band down) to the circles.

Now we have our Uncle Sam’s hat vase!

Uncle Sam’s Hat Vase Cover

You’re probably wondering HOW a paper vase works.

Well, it’s really more of a vase cover.

Grab a vase that will fit inside the hat (you can find ones that will fit at the dollar store) and some long stem fresh flowers.

Slip the Uncle Sam’s hat vase cover over the vase then insert and arrange the flowers.

Now the tough choice: right side up or upside down??

I think it depends on where you place the vase.

I currently have mine on my mantel and think it looks best upside down.

Otherwise you can’t see the brim on  a ledge that high up.

If I set it on a table I think I would place it right side up.

I shared a sneak peek of this project on Instagram over the weekend.

I am SO excited with how this project turned out!

I turned heat transfer vinyl from my Patriotic Farmhouse collection (no longer available) into fabulous HTV Zipper Pouches!

If you like these patterns, grab them quick! They will only be available a few more days.

Can you believe you can use HTV like fabric?

I was so excited I ended up with 4 new HTV zipper pouches – one of which my husband has already confiscated to keep in Old Blue (our ’66 Ford F100).

The old Ford belonged to my grandfather who bought it new in 1966.

He used it as a farm truck for years and years, before retiring it to live in a barn.

There is stayed for 20 years until my husband came along and asked my grandmother if he could have it to fix up.

But life was busy then, and the Ford ended up living in our detached garage for another 10 years before COVID hit and suddenly everyone had more time.

Now it runs, and we take it to town on errands and whatnot.

We all love it!

And it has a lot to do with the vinyl collection I created.

HTV Zipper Pouches: Instructions

Cut your fabric and HTV to be the same size.

I am using 6″x9″ pieces.

You want a nice solid fabric to be the base of your HTV.

Iron the HTV to the fabric according to package directions.

For this vinyl, that is 18 seconds at 305 degrees F.

You will need to “sheet” of the new HTV fabric, both at the same size.

You will also need two pieces of fabric, also 6″x9″ for the inside of the zipper pouch.

Stitch one side of the outer zipper fabric, and one part of the inner zipper fabric to your zipper.

Repeat with the other side of the zipper.

This tutorial is fairly brief as far as the direction for sewing a zipper pouch go.

For a more in depth directions, visit my washi tape zipper pouch tutorial.

You should now have a front and back of the zipper pouch with the outer and inner fabrics.

Line up the outer fabric on top of one another, as well as the inner fabrics.

TIP: Be sure the zipper is OPEN before sewing.

Stitch around the edges of the fabric, leaving a gap that is several inches wide (see arrow).

Pull the fabric right side out through the hole.

Stitch the hole closed.

And this is the result!

How fun is this HTV zipper pouch??

The HTV gives the pouch a fun feel, almost like duck cloth.

 TIP: If the HTV looks too wrinkly for your likes, cover it with a piece of cotton fabric and iron at 300 degrees F to smooth it out.

I can barely believe this zipper pouch started as a piece of heat transfer vinyl.

I obviously had to do a mini photo shoot with the HTV zipper pouches and Old Blue.

Don’t they go together nicely?

This is the zipper pouch my husband confiscated from me.

He said it should live in Old Blue, and I agree with him.

Besides, I have 3 others (so far!) to play with.

Now what other HTVs should I try this with….???

It’s always hard to believe when we’re at the end of another school year.

The fall always seems to drag on, then the spring semester zooms by!

And luckily I was able to whip up these fun teacher gifts in time for the final week of school.

I can’t wait to go into more detail about these fun zipper pouch teacher gifts.

I used some new heat transfer vinyl I am now OBSESSED with and custom made some keychains with my 3D printer.

And, of course, I have a complete supply list added to the end of the post.

Fun Zipper Pouch Teacher Gifts: Puff Vinyl

First up, the vinyl on the zipper pouch.

It’s called EV Puff vinyl from Expressions Vinyl.

It acts like puff paint when heated!

I have a video of it in action on my Instagram if you want to check it out.

I love the texture it gives to the zipper pouch

You can find the zipper pouches I used here.

They are perfect pencil pouch size.

For the puff vinyl, I used it in white, neon blue, black, and purple.

And how about the wording ON the zipper pouch????

I was shopping with my mom and saw something similar that said “Could be makeup, could be snacks.”

I thought it was SO funny!!

I love it for the teachers using school supplies in place of makeup.

Fun Zipper Pouch Teacher Gifts: Custom Keychains

The other custom made part of the teacher gifts are these fun 3D printed keychains.

I made them with my Ankermake M5, and I will include filaments colors at the end of the post.

They turned out SO fun!

The Music teacher and football coach/Science teacher were easy to figure out what design to make.

For the other 3 teachers, I had my son figure out what his teachers enjoy, possibly outside of class.

The English teacher loves the Friends tv show (and rightly so in this blogger’s opinion) and has Friends references all over her classroom.

The Social Studies teacher loves Hamilton.

The Math teacher has llamas all around her classroom.

My 3D printer does not currently have a color changing function so I had to manually pause the print to make the color change on each keychain.

For the Friends couch, I actually used acrylic paint on the dots between the teacher’s name.

It was very easy and the plastic takes the paint very well.

I used these keychain rings and clasps for the 3D prints and attached them to the zipper pouches.

I love them because they are easy to put on and off, but still very secure.

Fun Zipper Pouch Teacher Gifts: School Supplies

I stuffed each zipper pouch with school supplies including Sharpie gel pens (these are AMAZING!), sticky notes, dry erase markers, Amazon gift cards, and, for the music teacher, fun music-shaped paperclips (links below).

I think it all turned out so fun!

Useful gifts are the best gifts, in my opinion, for our teachers.

Hopefully they can use these items in their classroom next year.

Patriotic Farmhouse Vinyl Collection

To help inspire you with ideas to use these patterns I have come up with 8 fun designs using them AND am giving you the free SVG files to cut them out.

I’ve also used a few of the SVG files with the vinyl so you can see what they will look like in real life.

I’m also showing off the projects I made using the vinyl with the free SVG files I am giving you.

FLAG PATTERN

Everyone needs a good flag shirt to sport during the summer.

I love this one using the barn quilts pattern as the stars and the red gingham as the stripes.

I made the flag pattern on a white t-shirt and just love how it came out!

Because this is all straight lines, you don’t even need a die cut machine to cut it out if you do not have one.

QUILT PATTERN

The barn quilts pattern definitely inspired using the various pieces in this collection as a quilt.

You can easily mix and match any of your favorite designs into this quilt pattern.

This is probably my favorite design of the set!

And, again, with all of the straight lines you do not HAVE to have a die cut machine for this pattern.

I also have a quick tip for using this design.

Iron on the center square first.

Follow that with the next layer of triangles, but fold the corners of the triangle together and pinch the middle.

You can see that I did this with the piece I am ready to iron on.

It will help center all of the triangles around the square, and, once iron, that pinch mark will disappear.

FARM SWEET FARM PATTERN

This sweet pattern make a glorious wreath or just a sign for your home.

It would be sweet as an iron on as well!

I used the adhesive vinyl to create the Farm Sweet Farm sign on a piece of 12×12 acrylic (1/16″ thick – affiliate link).

I used my Crop-a-dile (affiliate link) to punch a hole through the acrylic to add a ribbon for hanging.

TRUCK HAIR DON’T CARE

I definitely need to put this on a ball cap!

I’ve shared this pattern two ways:

The longer version would be cute on a t-shirt.

The small version would be perfect for a ball cap.

MOUSE HEAD PATTERN

Obviously being a Disney fan I had to include a Mickey Mouse head.

I will definitely be making this for my next trip to the parks!

MADE IN THE USA PATTERN

This is another fun one for summer!

TENNESSEE HOME SWEET HOME PATTERN

Being a TN girl, I had to include this one.

I think it is so sweet in the large floral pattern, but would totally use one with the pickup trucks, too!

FARMERS MARKET PATTERN

And, finally, I have this fun Farmers Market sign.

It is a fun use of the borders design that includes all of the collection in one sheet of vinyl.

Custom Vinyl Collection Collaboration

I have designed 10 patterns that have been turned into both adhesive vinyl and heat transfer vinyl.

I’m calling it the Patriotic Farmhouse Collection!

It’s all about old pickup trucks, florals, and the red, white, and blue.

I am a scrapbooker at heart, and one of my favorite things about a scrapbook paper collection is always a sheet with a mixture of the entire collection.

I wanted to create that with my vinyl collection.

This sheet includes all of the patterns together in one sheet.

Several years ago we threw an EPIC Super Mario Bros. birthday party for my youngest and it never made it to the blog.

With the new Mario Bros. movie out, it seemed like a great time to dig out those photos.

There were SOOOOO many fun and creative craft and food ideas that were incorporated into this party!

I feel the need to share in case you can use them, too.

I also have a couple of fun printables available at the end of the post.

And, of course, I will list the supplies used at the end of the post.

Having two little boys, we obviously have a deep love of video game in this house.

Mario Kart is a game we love to play as a family, and, believe it or not, I have my original Nintendo game system and introduced the boys to the original Super Mario Bros. games!

They loved the old games.

And they definitely inspired this Mario Bros. birthday party.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Invitation

Let’s start with the Mario Bros. birthday party invitation I designed.

The template is extremely similar to my superhero newspaper invitation, just with that Mario Bros. theme.

The invite can be folded up like a newspaper for mailing out.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Table

There are SO many fun details to this party table!

I have a list of all the foods and party decorations that were made and directions for several.

The centerpiece of the table is the Mario Bros. birthday cake.

The cake is surrounded by lots of decorations including green pips, characters made from Legos, and little figures from the Mario Bros. games that the boys already had.

We have lots of fun food for snacking and some “Princess Peach” punch for drinking.

I covered the table with light blue plastic tablecloths (2 because they are so thin) and cut clouds out of white poster board to scatter around the table so it looked like the sky.

The “gold coins” hang from the light fixture are yellow paper plates taped together with a yellow cardstock rectangle taped to the center.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Cake

This may be one of my favorite birthday cakes to date.

It is several layers of vanilla pound cake covered in light blue buttercream.

The clouds, grass, and black writing on top of the cake are all buttercream.

The castle is brown fondant that was cut to shape with a knife.

Then I used a ruler to create the “brick” look by making indentions in the fondant.

The black castle doors and windows are black fondant.

The same castle design is repeated on all sides of the cake.

The flag pole is a skinny dowel rod with a painted wooden bead on top.

The flag is printed on white cardstock and wrapped around the flagpole.

The jumping Mario figure on the cake is one I lucked across in the checkout line of a store (you can find a similar one here).

The cake was definitely a big hit and plenty to feed a crowd.

You can see some of the Mario Bros. figures around the cake that were already in the boys’ stash.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Food

The food is always one of my favorite things to pull together!

Themed food can be so fun, especially with a popular theme like this were the kids and adults already know all the details.

All of the food for this party was very simple to pull together.

The “Fire Power Veggies” are a bowl of veggie dip with two olives for eyes surrounded by sliced yellow peppers, baby carrots, and cherry tomatoes.

The stem and leaves are sliced cucumbers and broccoli florets.

We also had “Cloud Jell-O” which was layers of blue Jell-O with Cool Whip in between.

Other party foods included “Cheese Puff Fire Balls” (cheese puffs), “Yoshii Eggs” (green grapes), “Super Italian Sandwiches” (Italian sub sandwiches from Publix cut into small portions}, and Princess Peach Punch.”

We also had PB&J rollups for the kids that wouldn’t eat the Italian sub sandwiches.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Chocolates

I turned a plastic candy dish into an angry Goomba by printing and cutting out the face and cutting a black heart for the feet.

The dish is full of Mario Bros.-themed chocolates using this mold.

These chocolates were so easy to make and had so many details on them.

And I love that they have the retro pixelated look to them.

I also made a special video game controller chocolate just for the birthday boy.

I even used the Mario Bros. game chocolates as cupcake toppers for my son’s class at school.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Decorations

To save cost on Mylar balloons, I only bought two that were the Mario Bros. theme.

In addition to those two, I purchase some plain gold stars Mylar balloons and plain green and red round Mylar balloons.

To the star balloons, I layered black and white vinyl to make eyes for a gold Super Star.

To the green and red balloons, I added white circles to make 1-Up Mushrooms and Super Mushrooms.

The biggest project for this party was definitely these Piranha Plants.

You can also see that we made some just plain green pipes with no plants.

They are SO fun, and a great addition to the party decor.

You can also see the fun “Power Up” snacks sign I designed for the table.

Also in this photo, a look at the simple bunting I made from some Mario Bros. fabric that can be hung in the birthday boy’s room later.

To make the Piranha Plants you will need

white felt

black felt

red balloons

PVC pipe in assorted diameters

green cardstock

green paper grass

green spray paint

Piece the two wider diameter pipes together and glue if needed.

Spray paint a couple of coats (any brand of a Kelly green color will look great).

Also spray paint the “stem” of the plant.

Once dry, adhere a round of green cardstock to the base of the pipe.

Place the stem into the pipe and stuff with the green paper grass.

Cut two leaves out of the green cardstock and adhere to the plant stem.

Blow up a red balloon and glue the end with the hole to the top of the plant stem.

Cut circles out of white felt and adhere them to the balloon.

Cut the black felt into the shape of an eye and adhere it to the top of the balloon to create a mouth.

Cut two thin rectangles from the white felt to line each side of the black mouth.

Cut triangles of white felt to make teeth and glue them to the white rectangles.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Bags

For our goody bags, I used a base of a small Kraft paper box.

To that, I added a rectangle of either red or green cardstock for a Mario or Luigi shirt.

That was topped with a piece of blue cardstock cut to look like the Bros. overalls.

Finally, and round, gold glitter “button” was added.

I also made this fun Game Over sign to go with all of the goody bags as the kids grabbed them at the end of the party.

The goody bags were filled with:

a small plastic trophy

Mario gold coins (Party City)

faux mustaches

Mario Bros. tattoos

punch balloons

Mario Bros. pencil (Party City)

The main party decor was in our dining room, but the kitchen is also used to hang out in during parties.

I found these fun, removable Mario Bros. wall decals and added them to the cabinets.

After the party, my son used them to decorated his bedroom door.

Mario Bros. Birthday Party Video Game Truck

A HUGE highlight of the party was that we hired a video game truck to come to the house!

The kids were SO excited.

They had four large screens set up in the truck and multiple game systems available.

On the opposite side of the screens was a long bench for the kids to sit on and play the game.

Someone from the company sat at the other end of the truck to be available to change games and assist as needed.

It was definitely a gigantic hit with the birthday boy and his friends.

The Mario Bros. birthday party was super fun!

I was given the opportunity to review the circle edge punch, a product from Martha Stewart Crafts.

Unfortunately, it does not appear that the starter kit here is available any longer.

However, if you have one already, you can still purchase cartridges for the kit, and there are some super cute ones.

If you cannot find a starter kit, do not fret!

You can still create these adorable doily place settings with a die cut machine which I will talk more about at the end of the post.

The starter kit is for a is a circle edge punch, that uses cartridges to create patterns.

Basically it makes doilies or decorative rounded papers for your crafting and/or scrapbooking.

Shown above is the circle edge punch starter kit.

Let’s break it down…

The starter kit comes with

1) a decorative edge punch cartridge,

2) the punch comes with a plastic cap which contains the counter punch to slip into the base, and

3) the base which holds your paper and the punch.

To get started, you need to remove the counter punch from the plastic and insert it into the base.

The decorative edge punch sits on top of the counter punch and stays attached with heavy duty magnets.

The base allows you to cut the doilies in any size ranging from 6 to 12 inches.

You can adjust the paper width using the sliding ruler (top left) and the circle diameter using the curved slide (bottom right).

To punch your paper, first you need to find the center and mark a small X in pencil.

I’m going to punch a 12″ doily so I need to set both of the number settings to 12.

Remove the round knob (it’s magnetic) and set your paper there.

Replace the round knob.

The center of the knob is see through and has cross hairs so you can line up the X you drew in the center of the paper.

Place the punch on the base and push down to push the punch through the paper.

Remove the punch, give the round knob a quick twist, and the paper will rotate just the right amount to make the next punch.

Replace the punch and continue on until you have worked your way all around the paper.

I made 12″ and 6″ doilies on double sided scrapbook paper.

By the way, all the scraps that you are punching out are collected inside the base to this project is also mess free!

Doily Place Setting

I used my 12″ doily as a placemat and the 6″ doily as a decorative utensil holder to make an adorable doily place setting.

Because of the double sided scrapbook paper, I can easily change the look of the place setting.

Wouldn’t this make a super fun addition to your holiday table!

I folded and wrapped the utensil holder with some twine to hold it together.

I’m a bit of a doily fanatic so this product is definitely right up my alley!

It’s super easy to use and the end product is phenomenal.

All in all, I am loving this punch and the number of crafty projects I can create with it!

Don’t have the starter kit?

Cut sweet shapes around the edges of your scrapbook paper using a doily die cut on your die cut machine!

I can’t speak for the Cricut, but I know the Silhouette Image Library has TONS of doily shapes (and I probably own half of them!).

But, like I’ve said before, I did not get a lot of good photos during the party (too much fun being had!).

But I’m sharing some pics I was able to take later, and, luckily, I did get photos of the my son blowing out his birthday cake!

Harry Potter Birthday Party: Wand Shop

I shared this photo with the Wand Shop post, but since it contains a lot of the decor I wanted to share it again here.

Can I just say that brick background is AMAZING!

It really made the space for the wand shop!

Harry Potter Birthday Party: Potions Class

We also had a potions class, which I broke into 2 posts because we did so much!

It was almost as much fun as making the wands!

We did several potions including a potion that sorted the kids into the Hogwarts houses.

They REALLY loved that one!

Can I just say that “slime” makes for great potions?

That’s what is in all the test tubes! (Test tube rack found at Michael’s.)

But more on that in the potions post (coming soon).

I’ll also share about making that life-size Professor Snape soon.

Harry Potter Birthday Party: Quidditch

I made some cute Golden Snitches to decorate the DIY Quidditch field.

I just cut out wings from white cardstock and hot glued them to gold paper lanterns (affiliate link).

To make the wings stand out away from the lanterns I glued popsicle sticks to the back of them.

Harry Potter Birthday Party: Decorations

In the “great hall” where we had the food table I hung LED taper candles (affiliate link).

I strongly contemplated collecting paper towels rolls to make my own taper candles, but these ended up being just over $1 each which seemed well worth the purchase.

I hung them from our dining room light with fishing line.

I found this awesome Daily Prophet fabric at JoAnn’s and cut it up to make some fun bunting.

It made for a great backdrop for the gift table.

Harry Potter Birthday Party: Hogwarts-Inspired Book Cake

Now for the Hogwarts-inspired cake!

I used my favorite chocolate pound cake recipe and buttercream recipe.

I love using pound cake because I know the cake will hold up without much need for extra support.

The book covers are made from Wilton’s brown fondant (affiliate link) which is chocolate flavored and surprisingly tasty for fondant!

It’s also super simple to use.

It did take 2 boxes for this cake.

It took three rectangular cakes to make the books.

The bottom layer is two full sheets of cake stacked to make 2 layers, and the top is one cake cut in half and stacked to make 2 layers.

I iced the entire bottom layer, let it set up in the fridge, then rolled out the fondant, cut it to size,  and placed it on the top and one long side of the cake.

I cut strips of the fondant to place along all of the other bottom edges of the cake to look like the cover on the bottom of the book.

I also cut two small rectangles of fondant for the spine and attached it by wetting the back side of the fondant with water.

I used extra buttercream to pipe out the name of the book.

I repeated the process with the smaller book.

And, because of the denseness of the pound cake, I didn’t need to use dowel rods to support the second layer of the cake.

I managed to make the buttercream edges look like book pages by repeatedly pressing a pair of 5-blade herb scissors (affiliate link) into the icing while it was nice and cold.

It worked perfectly!

I used some gold cake dust to dress up parts of the cake.

The gold cake dust could be mixed with water and used as paint so I added it to the strips on the spine, the book titles, and the HP logo I hand cut out of some extra fondant.

I also added streaks of the gold to the book pages to give them an aged look.

I used my Silhouette Cameo to create and cut out a fun Harry Potter cake topper!

The black is black cardstock that I cut twice and glued together to make 2 layers thick for durability.

The sorting hat, lighting bolt, owl, snitch, Quidditch player, and wand are decorated with an extra layer of adhesive vinyl.

To use it on the cake I glued a skewer to the back of it.

The other items on top of the cake are a miniature sorting hat that actually talks (affiliate link) and a small “wand” made from a chocolate covered pretzel.

I also wanted to show off the “suitcase” I made for the cake to sit on.

I wanted a real vintage-style suitcase but couldn’t find one for a reasonable price so I created on out of a box and some accessories I found at Hobby Lobby.

I’m obsessed with how the entire cake turned out!

I’m obviously no cake expert and the cake has it’s issues, but since the books are suppose to look older, my lack of ability actually worked more for me than against me.

Not like that will happen very often, right???

I have a huge weakness for scrapbook paper.

I rarely scrapbook these days, but my love of paper has never wavered!

I try to stay away from it at the craft stores, but every once in a while it gets the best of me, and I take a little peak.

Lucky I did because I came across these gorgeous pink gingham, vintage floral, and wood plank papers!

I thought paired together I could make the cutest little Easter decor.

I couldn’t be happier with how my framed paper bunny turned out!

And it goes to show, even the most basic of craft supplies can create something so pretty!

Framed Paper Bunny Supplies

You actually only need 2 sheets of scrapbook paper for this project if you’re using these papers, but 3 if using others.

The gingham and the florals are actually front and back of the same 12×12 scrapbook paper (from My Mind’s Eye).

The wood plank paper is 8.5×11″ and is the Hobby Lobby brand.

You will also need my egg and bunny template.

Framed Paper Bunny Cutting

Trim the gingham (background) paper down to 8″x10″.

Print the egg and bunny template and cut out the egg.

Trace it on the back of the wood plank paper and cut out.

Cut out the bunny from the egg and trace it on the remainder of the floral paper but on the gingham side and cut out.

Center the egg on the 8×10″ gingham paper then the bunny on the egg and adhere together with glue or double-sided tape.

It’s pretty cute just like this, but I think we need to embellish our new little friend!

Framed Paper Bunny Pom Pom Tail

For some dimension and, let’s face it, complete cuteness, I made a pom pom bunny tail.

To make a pom pom, wrap yarn around a ruler or serving fork many, many times.

Pull the yarn off of the ruler and wrap the center with a piece of yarn and tie it in a knot.

Cut all the loops above and below where you wrapped and knotted the yarn.

Trim the pom pom until all of the ends are the same length and glue it to the bunny.

Framed Paper Bunny Embellishments

I added a little lace collar at the bunny’s neck as well as some small floral embellishments.

These extra embellishments are just extra, but so cute!

Isn’t she the cutest??

Just add her to your favorite 8×10″ frame and you have yourself a stunning new piece of Easter decor!

I have always wanted to make an DIY Easter egg wreath.

They are so festive for spring, don’t you think?

And there are so many styles!

A fun plastic egg wreath that kids would love.

Or one with the muted colors of a vintage-style wreath.

And, for me, one with a little farmhouse flair to it.

I’m so happy with how my DIY Easter egg wreath turned out!

Can you believe this started as a plain grapevine wreath?

DIY Easter Egg Wreath Supplies

Small grapevine wreath

8 foam eggs (affiliate link)

8 eucalyptus branches

2 berry branches

Acrylic paint (Americana Decor in Colonial Blue, Spa Blue, Coral, and Bright Salmon)

Not shown:

Wire cutters

Floral wire

Painting Eggs for DIY Easter Egg Wreath

If the eggs you use are on picks like these, simply remove the skewers and invert them so you can paint the entire egg at one time.

Apply 2-3 coats as needed for good coverage.

Adding Eucalyptus Leaves to DIY Easter Egg Wreath

Trim each the eucalyptus stems just under where all of the branches come together.

Push the ends of the stems into the grapevine wreath (see arrow).

Space them evenly around the wreath with all of the branches facing the same direction.

Some of the longer branches of the eucalyptus will be sticking way out from the outside of the wreath.

Cut small pieces of floral wire (~4″ long).

Pull the longer stems back toward the wreath and wrap them and the wreath together with the wire to keep the stems in place.

Trim off any excess wire and hide it under other eucalyptus stems.

Repeat with all of the long stems.

The wreath should look something like this when you are done wiring the eucalyptus in place.

Adding Berry Branches to DIY Easter Egg Wreath

Now it’s time to add the berry branches.

These branches have several long stems on each branch.

Trim off each stem so that 2-5 clusters of berries are on each stem.

Tuck these branches into the grapevine wreath just as you did with the eucalyptus, evenly spaced around the wreath and with all of the stems facing the same direction.

Wire any unruly stems to the wreath.

Adding Eggs to DIY Easter Egg Wreath

Now it’s time to add the eggs.

You can either hot glue the eggs to the wreath or use the floral wire.

Before permanently adding the eggs, first place them on the wreath where you want them to go so that you can space them evenly.

This DIY Easter egg wreath turned out so pretty!

I love the pops of color the berries bring to the eucalyptus stems.

I wired the eggs to the wreath so I can remove them and use the wreath after Easter and add the eggs back in next year!

It may only be February, but spring is in the air here in Tennessee!

Daffodils are blooming, trees are budding, and even my iris are starting to peak out of the ground.

It has me in the mood to decorate for spring!

This month’s FloraCraft® Make It: Fun challenge was to create a spring project using their foam egg shapes.

As a former scientist, I love it when I can bring science into my crafting.

I had this crazy notion to grow crystals on Styrofoam eggs to make them a spectacular piece of home decor in the form of crystallized egg.

And it worked!

Supplies to Grow Crystals on Styrofoam

Borax

FloraCraft® Make It: Fun® Foam Eggs, size 2 1/2″

Mason jar

Not shown: twine, heavy duty magnets, Popsicle stick, toothpick, food coloring

Borax is a standard detergent that you can find at your local grocery store.

Setup to Grow Crystals on Styrofoam

Before we get into how to grow the crystals, we need to figure out the setup of our experiment.

The main drawback to growing crystals on foam is that foam floats.

And to grow crystals over the entire surface of the egg we need it to be completely submerged in our solution.

So we are going to rig it!

1. Cut a toothpick in half and push the sharp ends into each end of the foam egg, about halfway in.

2. Tie a short piece of twine to one toothpick and a longer piece to the other end.

Tie the other end of the longer piece of twine to the Popsicle stick.

3. Place the end of the short piece of twine between two heavy duty magnets.

4. Place the egg contraption, magnet end first, into a Mason jar and rest the Popsicle stick on the rim.

Set a third magnet under the jar.

The magnets attached to the twine will be drawn to the magnet under the jar.

Adjust the lengths of twine as needed to be sure the egg will be in the center of the jar (from top to bottom).

The magnet under the jar and the Popsicle stick can both be adjusted to be sure the egg stays away from the sides of the jar.

If the crystals growing on the egg or the side of the jar touch, they will fuse together.

Solution to Grow Crystals on Styrofoam

Now it’s time to create the solution!

Remove the egg from the jar. We will add it back once the solution has been made.

1. Boil enough water to fill the jar.

2. Once boiled, carefully add the water to the jar. Do not fill all the way to the top! Adding the egg will displace the water so it will overflow if too full.

3. Add Borax to the water while stirring. Continue to add Borax until it no longer dissolves in the hot water. We are creating a saturated solution.

4. Add food coloring if desired.

5. Add the egg contraption as you practiced previously. Be sure the egg is not touching any of the sides of the jar.

6. Wrap the jar with a dishtowel and cover the top with a potholder so that the solution cools down at a slow rate.

Leave for 12-24 hours. The more saturated the solution you create, the bigger the crystals will be. Once you remove the egg from the solution, remove the toothpicks and set the egg on paper towels to dry.

The coloring is really faint.

If you want a more intense color you could try spray painting the eggs and allowing them to dry prior to placing them in the solution.

I like the subtle color of the crystals shown here.

These little crystal eggs can be displayed as is or further decorated.

I thought they looked pretty cute with these little faux blooms in them! I simply inserted the stems in the holes from the toothpick.

They make pretty little vases, don’t you think?

These crystallized egg vases are a fun little pop of spring decor to get me started with my indoor decorating.

Did you know you could grow crystals on Styrofoam?

Now I’m itching to crystallize some more things!!

This is a fun project to let the kids help with.

Just be sure an adult handles the boiling water.

These Harry Potter howler envelope snacks are a must have for any Harry Potter themed party!

We made them for our epic Harry Potter charcuterie board for Halloween a couple of years ago.

I had so wanted to include them in our amazing Harry Potter birthday party, but ran out of time to get them made.

The howler envelopes are instantly identifiable as being from the Harry Potter movies, especially with the addition of the eyes and lips.

They are both a must have Harry Potter food!

And it seems the original recipe I followed to make them is no longer available. Boo!

So I have written out the recipe below as I remember so we can all make them anytime.

Harry Potter Howler Envelope Snacks

These Harry Potter howler envelope snacks are reminiscent of crab rangoon using a won ton and cream cheese filling.

However, you can change up the cream cheese filling ingredients in any way you desire.

We prefer a savory treat for our charcuterie board so we stuck to adding green onions and salt only to the cream cheese filling.

But if you prefer a sweet treat, you could add jam or just sugar to the cream cheese.

Or change it up altogether with Nutella or some similar filling.

Harry Potter Howler Envelope Snacks

Howler envelope snacks are a must have treat for any Harry Potter fan.

Prep Time 30 minutes

Cook Time 30 minutes

Total Time 1 hour

Ingredients

• 1 package won ton wrappers
• 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
• 2-3 green onions, finely chopped
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 3 cups vegetable oil for frying
• Small bowl of water
• Red and black gel icing

Instructions

1. In a small bowl, mix softened cream cheese, green onions, and salt.
2. Place a won ton on the counter so that is in the shape of a diamond.
3. Add 1 teaspoon of cream cheese mixture in the middle of the won ton.
4. Dip fingertip in bowl of water and rub around the edges of the won ton wrapper. This will help seal the edges of the won ton when it is folded.
5. Fold won ton wrapper in the shape of an envelope by folding the bottom corner up to the middle of the wrapper, followed by each side, then the top corner.
6. Heat oil over medium heat (or ~350° F).
7. Once hot, fry envelopes in small batches as will fit in your pan, ~3-4 minutes per side.
8. Place cooked envelopes on paper to drain.
9. Once cooled, use gel icing to create angry eyes and lips on the side of the envelope with seams.

Notes

A good seal on the envelope edges ensures cream cheese filling will not leak out during cooking. You can rub more water on the seams prior to frying if you think they need it.

I think I’ve officially been to the Disney parks more as an adult than I went as a child!

My family has been to Disneyland twice during our fall break in the last few years.

That time works best for our schedule, and we love that it coincides with their Halloween celebrations.

I’ve also visited Disney World several times on a girls trip with my besties from college!

Let me tell you, a girls trip, sans kids… it’s the best, you guys.

Disney with your kids is an amazing experience – seeing it all through their eyes.

But not having to take nap breaks, push strollers, and getting to meet all the princesses (#boymom) is super fun, too!

And making your own DIY Disney-themed t-shirts, whether for yourself or your entire family, is such a fun idea! 

I swear you get more interaction with the cast members and even some of the characters when you wear custom shirts, and even a little extra pixie dust!

For our girls trip this last April I decided to DIY myself some new DIY Disney-themed t-shirts!

And I’m sharing all the deets on how I made them and how YOU can make them, too!

DIY Disney-Themed T-Shirts: Toy Story

When I sat down and decided what shirts I wanted to make, I realized that I might be better off just starting on Etsy.

There are already so many great designs on there!

And I knew I could modify any files I might need to in my Silhouette software.

This Toy Story #squadgoals shirt is exactly what I had in mind to make.

You can find similar designs here.

The only edit I made was changing the hashtag font from the Walt Disney script to something more similar to the Toy Story font.

You can easily do this yourself with the Gil Sans Ultra Bold font.

TIP: To create the staggered look to the letters, ungroup the phrase and tilt each letter slightly in opposite directions and overlap them. Then use the OFFSET option to create an outline of the phrase.

I cut this design on Metallic Gold Heat Transfer Vinyl.

It was the perfect shirt to wear at Hollywood Studios to meet Woody and Buzz!

DIY Disney-Themed T-Shirts: Minnie Mouse

For the Magic Kingdom I wanted something more classic.

I didn’t know exactly what I wanted and went down a serious rabbit hole on Etsy looking at designs.

When I stumbled across a Minnie head full of Disney characters I was hooked!

I used Pewter and Red Metallic Foil Heat Transfer Vinyl for this shirt.

To use two colors on the design I simply ungrouped the file then regrouped all of the characters together and all of the bow parts together and cut them one at a time.

DIY Disney-Themed T-Shirts: Mountains

This year we ventured to Epcot which we hadn’t done in the past.

I didn’t have a specific shirt in mind for this park but had seen a super fun shirt using the phrase “The mountains are calling and I must go” that is popular with hikers, campers, and adventurers, but with a Disney twist… with all the “mountain” rides at Disney World!

Granted none of these rides are in Epcot, but I really wanted this shirt!

I found two designs I liked on Etsy, each with different aspects that I liked: one with the arrangement of the words and the other with the image of the rides.

So naturally I purchased both designs and combined the parts I liked on each!

I used Royal Blue Metallic Foil Heat Transfer Vinyl for this one.

Fun Fact: I didn’t pay more than $3 for any one design I purchased!

Our 100th Day of School is approaching!

My sons’ school loves to celebrate and this year, instead of dressing like they are 100 years old as we’ve done in the past, they want the kids to wear 100 Days of School shirts!

My boys LOVE LEGOS (that is SUCH an understatement!) so I knew we needed to incorporate them into our shirt theme.

I came up with this fun LEGO heat transfer pattern that uses, you guessed it, 100 LEGOS to spell out!

I’m sharing the free cut file with you guys today and all the deets on how to thriftily use all this different colored heat transfer vinyl (affiliate link) to create a unified pattern.

100 Days of School LEGO Shirt Pattern

This design is made up of exactly 100 LEGO bricks, perfect for celebrating the 100th Day of School!

This is a great scrap-busting project so gather any primary-colored heat transfer vinyl (affiliate link) that you have been stashing.

NOTE: Remember to always flip images horizontally for heat transfer projects!

100 Days of School LEGO Shirt Coloring Sheet

The easiest way to keep track of the colors you want to use on the pattern is to print out the design and color in the bricks.

I had 6 HTV colors on hand to use, but you can use and many or few colors as you like.

You will need to alter the image slightly in order to print, and I have some step by step directions for you.

The the line thickness of a Silhouette Studio file is 0, so while you can see the pattern on your computer screen, it will actually print absolutely nothing.

1) The first thing to do is resize the paper size to 8 1/2 x 11 to fit your printer paper size.

Rotate the image to fit on the paper, resize if necessary.

You can always resize again when you’re actually ready to cut the images.

2) Open the Line Color Window in the toolbar and change the line color to black (this step is totally optional, but I usually do this because

1) black is easier to see on paper and

2) you have more black toner in your printer than any other color)

3) Open the Line Style Window in the toolbar, set the Line Style to the solid line and set the Line Thickness to 1.5.

Now you can easily print the image and color in the bricks so you can keep up with the color pattern.

Cutting 100 Days of School LEGO Shirt

There are a couple of options to cut this design.

The first one will use a lot more HTV, but will be quicker.

The second uses MUCH less HTV (scrap-buster!) but takes a little longer.

The end result for both will be an impossibly cute LEGO shirt!

OPTION 1: Use the printed pattern as a guide and delete all bricks except of one color (example: if you’re cutting red HTV, delete all bricks that will be any other color other than red). Leave the red bricks in place, flip image horizontally, and cut the bricks out. Click UNDO (or Ctrl Z) until you return to the original image then delete all bricks but those of the second color you are cutting. Repeat this process until all the bricks are cut. Then you simply need to lay down the vinyl, one color at a time, and iron it onto the shirt. The bricks will all align perfectly.

OPTION 2: Follow the first step from above. Pick the color you want to start with, delete all other bricks of another color, flip horizontally, and cut. For ALL OTHER BRICK COLORS, select just those bricks and line them up tightly in the top left corner of the cutting mat in the program. Instead of taking up so much square space leaving the bricks in the original design, you can cut them all in a very small area making this great for using up scrap HTV.

In option 2, when cutting the other brick colors other than the original first where they are left in the original design, you want to cut all the way through the HTV (plastic, too) rather than just the HTV itself. To do this, set the CUT THICKNESS to 25.

As you can see in the photo above, I used OPTION 2 for my design.

I cut the yellow HTV (shown white above because it’s the back side) first in the original pattern and removed the excess vinyl.

I cut all other bricks on scrap HTV and deepend the cut thickness to 25 so that each brick was an individual piece.

I added the other color bricks to the original design in yellow by following the printed guide and simply lining up the “bricks” and laying them face down (plastic side down) on the sticky-backed plastic of the original design.

Continue adding “bricks” to the original pattern until the image is complete.

Then simply flip over and iron on to the shirt.

Ironing 100 Days of School LEGO Shirt

Peel plastic back while still warm from the iron.

Some of the extra plastic from the bricks may come off with the large sheet of plastic, and simply peel off others that do not.

The final result of the 100 days of school Lego shirt!

Doesn’t it look fun??

These little guys each love their 100 days of school LEGO shirt!

They even double checked me to be sure there was indeed 100 LEGO bricks on their shirts.

Our 100th day is actually tomorrow so they can’t wait to wear them!

Now that my kids are in middle school, we do not really have to deal with coming up with 20-30 class valentines (per child!) anymore.

On the one hand, it’s a huge relief as I do not miss scrambling to come up with the perfect witty Valentine.

I have been wanting a tobacco stick star for years, and I finally broke down and bought one this fall.

I can’t wait to add some Christmas lights to it and set it up with our outdoor decor this holiday season!

Something new I’ve been seeing around here at barn sales and flea markets are tobacco stick Christmas trees.

They are darling!

And I decided to try my hand at making some miniature ones myself.

BUT I didn’t have access to tobacco sticks.

So I made some knock offs!

FloraCraft® Make It: Fun came out with their 2016 Holiday E-Book and challenged their team members to recreate something in it in our own style.

There are some beautiful faux wood stars in the book made from sheets of foam so I used a similar technique to make these Christmas trees.

It is a method I have used before to make my faux wood platter.

Making Faux Tobacco Sticks

Take a 1/2″ sheet of FloraCraft® Make It: Fun foam and cut ten 1″x12″ rectangles.

Cover the top and all four sides with a coat of Smooth Finish.

Allow to dry for a couple of hours.

If you have an faux wood grain embossing folder or stamp, gently press on top of the Smooth Finish to emboss the pattern on it.

If you DON’T have a faux wood grain pattern to use, you can draw one on the Smooth Finish by hand using a stylus or embossing tool.

Allow the Smooth Finish to continue to dry for several more hours as directed on the container.

Once completely cured, sand all of the edges and top smooth with a very fine grit sandpaper.

Round the edges to mimic the look of a worn tobacco stick. In the bottom photo above, the 3 sticks on the left have not been sanded and the 3 on the right have.

Painting Faux Tobacco Sticks

Tobacco sticks typically have a grayish brown to light brown coloring to them.

To mimic this I combined 3 Americana paint colors: Cocoa (2 parts), Slate Grey (1 part), and Espresso (a few drops).

To be sure I had an ultra matte look to the paint I added in Chalk Finish Medium from DecoArt (1 part medium to 2 parts paint).

The medium gives any paint that ultra matte look of chalk paint.

After giving all of the sticks a good coat of paint, I went back and very lightly dry brushed some of the Espresso paint on all of the sticks.

This helps to make the wood grain pattern stand out and give the sticks dimension.

Assembling Faux Tobacco Stick Christmas Trees

Two sticks will act as the two sides of the tree.

Trim the piece that will be the base and save the part you cut off to use as garland on the tree.

Cut a toothpick into thirds and insert each piece into the edge of a tobacco stick.

Use a Styrofoam glue or a hot glue gun on each toothpick then attach all of the sticks together.

Go back and add the “garland” to the back of the tree with more toothpicks and glue.

With ten sticks, you have enough to make 3 trees with 1 stick left over.

Cut up the final stick into 3 pieces and use as the 2nd garland swag on each tree.

Paint exposed foam ends of the trees.

You can wrap the trees in lights or even hang mini ornaments on them!

How fun are these??

I am loving how they turned out.

I can’t wait to add them to my Christmas decor!

Have you seen the painted quilts on barns when you drive around in rural areas?

Barn quilts usually have bright, vibrant colors and are square in shape and are hung on, you guessed it, the family barn.

Apparently they have been around for a long time, but became more popularized in the last couple of decades.

In fact, barn quilts are so popular now that you can even find barn quilt trails to follow.

Our family has talked for ages about adding one to our family farmhouse’s barn, and we really need to get together and get one made.

I love these idea of these quilts so much I decided to make some barn quilt gift tags to share with you all!

One of the gift tags set is in color and the other is black and white so you can color them in yourself.

You can find the download for these gift tags at the end of the post.

Colorful Barn Quilt Gift Tags

I love the color scheme of these gift tags!

You might notice they are similar colors as my farmhouse chic Christmas tags.

I loved the colors on those other Christmas tags so much I used them on these barn quilt gift tags as well.

These gift tags are for general gift giving, but I think they could definitely also pass as Christmas gift tags, don’t you think?

All you need are a pair of scissors and a hole punch (I highly recommend a Crop-a-dile (affiliate link)) to get these gifts ready to use.

Simply write your “to” and “from” on the back of the tags and attach to gifts with some twine.

Black and White Barn Quilt Gift Tags

I also created a set of the barn quilt tags in black and white.

You can leave the tags this way, but they are rip for some coloring.

These gift tags are the same patterns as the colorful gift tags so if you need color pattern ideas you can look to those tags for inspiration.

As with the colorful tags, you just need scissors and a hole punch to get these tags ready to use.

Coloring is such a therapeutic activity.

You can color these gift tags to match your gift wrap or in the recipient’s favorite colors.

OR you can give them uncolored and let the recipient color them.

Totally up to you, but aren’t they fun?

Just a close up shot so you can see just how cute these gift tags are and some of the fun details.

I just love the Christmas vibe from the colors.

Farmhouse Chic Christmas Tags Tools:

You do not need a lot of supplies to cut out and prep these gift tags.

In fact, you can do with just a hole punch and a pair of scissors.

But if you have a 2 1/2″ circle punch, it will cut the round gift tags perfectly.

And a Crop-a-dile makes punching all of the small holes in the tags a breeze (you can even do them all at once if you line them up!).

And, of course, Baker’s twine adds a fun look to the gift tags when you hang them from your packages and gift bags.

I wanted to show what each sheet looked like printed vs cut out.

I just love how the vintage trucks turned out.

And my old holidays designs incorporate quite nicely, if I do say so myself!

And while the truck designs are repeated on each sheet, they are on different tag shapes.

I am in an Italian food Facebook group because, though I am approximately 0% Italian, I am 100% obsessed with Italian food.

This group is awesome because these people are serious home cooks and home bakers and share photos of all of their amazing creations.

At Halloween, though not an Italian dish, someone shared a photo of the most adorable pumpkin deviled eggs they had created for their family.

How have I never seen little pumpkin deviled eggs before?

It has to be the cutest and simplest idea ever!

And by pumpkin deviled eggs, I mean deviled eggs that look like the yolks are little pumpkins.

NOT pumpkin flavored deviled eggs because that would be… we’ll just say ew.

I decided I needed to share this awesome idea for the masses so I adjusted my deviled egg recipe for you all.

This recipe will definitely be added to my Thanksgiving Planner Pages for future family feasts!

Can you imagine how adorable these will look on your fall holiday table?

The Perfect Boiled Egg

I have upped my egg game with this Dash Egg Cooker (affiliate link).

This bad boy will hold up to 12 eggs to boil at a time.

Not only does it cook them perfectly on a timer (~20 min for 1 dozen), but the shells are super easy to peel without any additives to the water.

I use this egg cooker for all our holiday meals (because deviled eggs are a must have side for this family), Easter eggs, and for making hard boiled eggs for egg salad.

Step one: Boil eggs, place in an ice bath to stop cooking, then peel off the shells.

Look at those gorgeous yellow yolks!

That is boiled egg perfection, my friends.

Step two: Slice peeled eggs in half and remove yolks then mash yolks with a fork.

Pumpkin Deviled Eggs: Preparing Egg Yolks

Step three: Add deviled egg ingredients (this is for 6 eggs).

3 Tbsp mayonnaise

1 tsp Dijon mustard

salt and pepper to taste

Mix ingredients thoroughly.

If the egg mixture is too dry, add more mayonnaise.

Add food coloring to egg yolk mixture (see next photo).

Pumpkin Deviled Eggs: Coloring Egg Yolks

You will need red food coloring and possibly yellow food coloring depending on the shade of orange you are going for.

Photo 1: This light orange color is after the addition of 3 drops of red food coloring. It was a little light for me.

Photo 2: After the addition of 3 more (6 total) drops of red food coloring, the shade of orange was a little too bright.

Photo 3: I added 3 drops of yellow food coloring to tone down the bright orange and was pretty happy with this shade of orange.

Food coloring totals: 6 drops of red food coloring + 3 drops of yellow food coloring.

Pumpkin Deviled Eggs

Step four: Fill the egg white with the orange egg yolk mixture.

I put the egg yolks in a pastry bag (affiliate link) for easy filling.

Step five: Cut chives into 1/2″ pieces and place one to the top of the egg yolk mixture to create the pumpkin stem.

Yield: 12

Pumpkin Deviled Eggs

Print

These festive pumpkin deviled eggs will add whimsy to your fall feasts.

Prep Time 2 minutes

Cook Time 18 minutes

Additional Time 10 minutes

Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

• 6 eggs
• 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
• salt and pepper to taste
• red and yellow food coloring
• chives

Instructions

1. Boil eggs, place in a water bath to stop cooking, then peel off the shell.
2. Slice eggs in half, remove egg yolks, and place yolks in a small bowl.
3. Mash egg yolks thoroughly with a fork.
4. Add mayonnaise and mustard to bowl and mix thoroughly.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
6. Add 6 drops of red food coloring and 3 drops of yellow food coloring to egg yolk mixture and mix thoroughly.
7. Place egg yolk mixture to a pastry bag and fill the egg whites.
8. Chop chives into 1/2" pieces and place into the top of the orange egg yolk on each egg to look like a pumpkin stem.

Notes

Eggs can be boiled ahead of time, but do not make deviled egg mixture and fill eggs until the day you are serving them.

If egg yolk mixture is too dry, add more mayonnaise.
