Soldier surprises parents at center ice during Bruins game

BOSTON -- A surprise on the ice for a local family Saturday night at the Bruins game.

It was supposed to be two proud parents dropping the puck at the Bruins game in honor of their son who is serving in Afghanistan.

Little did Lori and Daron Jacobs know, their son Charles was waiting just off the ice with the surprise of a life time.

“It was one of the most exciting moments of my life, I was shaking. My heart was coming out of my chest, it was so unreal,” said First Lt. Charles Jacobs.

On this Veteran’s Day weekend 17,000 fans gave the Jacobs a standing ovation that brought the couple to tears but even the crowd didn’t know what was coming next.

“All of sudden the crowd got a little louder and I’m trying to look up at the jumbotron, I see nothing. What’s going on?” said Daron Jacobs, Charles’ father.

“Please welcome home your son,” could be heard over the loud speaker.

First Lt. Jacobs had not seen his parents for the most of the year until he emerged; his mom and dad had a hard time keeping it together.

Court Orders Immediate Halt to Gay Military Ban

A federal appeals court ordered the U.S. government on Wednesday to immediately cease enforcing the longstanding ban on openly gay members of the military.

In a brief two-page order, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said the "don't ask, don't tell" policy must be lifted now that the Obama administration has concluded it's unconstitutional to treat gay Americans differently under the law.

The ruling was the latest legal development in the effort by gay rights supporters to end the policy. It came in response to a motion brought by Log Cabin Republicans, a group for gay GOP members, which last year persuaded a lower court judge to declare the ban unconstitutional.

After the government appealed U.S. District Judge Virginia Phillips' decision, the 9th Circuit agreed to keep the policy in place until it could consider the matter. The appeals court reversed itself with Wednesday's order by lifting its hold on Phillips' decision.

"The circumstances and balance of hardships have changed, and (the government) can no longer satisfy the demanding standard for issuance of a stay," the panel said.

The appeals court noted that Congress repealed the policy in December and that the Pentagon is preparing to certify that it is ready to welcome gay military personnel. It was not immediately clear what effect the court's ruling would have on the timeline for eliminating the ban.

Dan Woods, the lawyer representing Log Cabin Republicans, said that unless the administration appeals the order to the U.S. Supreme Court, "don't ask, don't tell is over."

He cautioned gay servicemembers against rushing to declare their sexual orientations until the government declares that it intends to abide by the ruling.

The Pentagon has been moving carefully to implement the repeal of the 17-year-old ban on openly gay troops. Under the law passed and signed by the president in December, final implementation would go into effect 60 days after the president and his senior defense advisers certify that lifting the ban won't hurt troops' ability to fight.

Helicopters descended out of darkness on the most important counterterrorism mission in U.S. history. It was an operation so secret, only a select few U.S. officials knew what was about to happen.

The location was a fortified compound in an affluent Pakistani town two hours outside Islamabad. The target was Usama bin Laden.

Intelligence officials discovered the compound in August while monitoring an Al Qaeda courier. The CIA had been hunting that courier for years, ever since detainees told interrogators that the courier was so trusted by bin Laden that he might very well be living with the Al Qaeda leader.

Nestled in an affluent neighborhood, the compound was surrounded by walls as high as 18 feet, topped with barbed wire. Two security gates guarded the only way in. A third-floor terrace was shielded by a seven-foot privacy wall. No phone lines or Internet cables ran to the property. The residents burned their garbage rather than put it out for collection. Intelligence officials believed the million-dollar compound was built five years ago to protect a major terrorist figure. The question was, who?

The CIA asked itself again and again who might be living behind those walls. Each time, they concluded it was almost certainly bin Laden.

President Barack Obama described the operation in broad strokes Sunday night. Details were provided in interviews with counterterrorism and intelligence authorities, senior administration officials and other U.S. officials. All spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive operation.

By mid-February, intelligence from multiple sources was clear enough that Obama wanted to "pursue an aggressive course of action," a senior administration official said. Over the next two and a half months, Obama led five meetings of the National Security Council focused solely on whether bin Laden was in that compound and, if so, how to get him, the official said.

Normally, the U.S. shares its counterterrorism intelligence widely with trusted allies in Britain, Canada, Australia and elsewhere. And the U.S. normally does not carry out ground operations inside Pakistan without collaboration with Pakistani intelligence. But this mission was too important and too secretive.

On April 29, Obama approved an operation to kill bin Laden. It was a mission that required surgical accuracy, even more precision than could be delivered by the government's sophisticated Predator drones. To execute it, Obama tapped a small contingent of the Navy's elite SEAL Team Six and put them under the command of CIA Director Leon Panetta, whose analysts monitored the compound from afar.

Panetta was directly in charge of the team, a U.S. official said, and his conference room was transformed into a command center.

Details of exactly how the raid unfolded remain murky. But the Al Qaeda courier, his brother and one of bin Laden's sons were killed. No Americans were injured. Senior administration officials will only say that bin Laden "resisted." And then the man behind the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil died from an American bullet to his head.

It was mid-afternoon in Virginia when Panetta and his team received word that bin Laden was dead. Cheers and applause broke out across the conference room.

Tensions were high at an emergency town hall meeting held Rep Jim Moran (D-VA) last Thursday, April 7th to address concerns regarding a potential government shutdown. Frustrated constituents shouted from the audience, asking the congressman to work longer hours and through the upcoming two week holiday break. A large number of federal workers live in Moran's Northern Virginia district.

He mentioned that this was the sixth continuing resolution and attempt to finalize funding to keep the government from shutting down, but said he "saw no reason why [lawmakers] would not keep the government running at the same level of spending for just a few days."

One of the audience members was Wayne Tunick, a 27 year disabled veteran who had a question for his representative that affects hundreds of thousands of military personnel fighting for our country: “Why are you here and not in congress trying to figure out how to stop this from happening?”

Tunick was referring to a memo released by the Department of Defense which stated that in the case of a government shutdown, the Pentagon would continue to prosecute the war in Afghanistan, but “All military personnel will continue in a normal duty status” but that “military personnel will serve without pay until such time as Congress makes appropriated funds available to compensate them for this period of service.”

Though the rhetoric of the guidance issued by the DOD was airy and fluffy, its meaning was not: our brave men and women will continue to fight, but without getting paid.

While members of Congress often believe they are serving some sort of selfless service by holding a town hall and allowing constituents access to them, Mr. Tunick’s question is the most important question that could have been asked to a representative while they are less than 24 hours away from the government shutting down; “what are you doing here?”

While lawmakers did come to an agreement shortly before midnight Friday night, the American peoples’ anger has not ceased. Is Mr. Tunick’s question, followed by Rep Moran’s disrespectful reply indicative of what’s to come?

Terry Jones, the controversial Pastor of a small Gainesville, Florida church first made national headlines last year by planning to set thousands of copies of the Qur’an on fire on the ninth anniversary of September 11th. Ultimately after General Patraeus weighed in saying he believed it would be detrimental and dangerous to US troops abroad, and other Government agencies condemned the idea, including a phone call from Secretary Gates to Jones himself, Jones says his church decided “to wait and pray about it.”

The Pastor slipped from national headlines once again until March 20th of this year when he held a “mock trial” finding the holy book of Islam “guilty.” Following the verdict his church streamed live online the burning of a Qur’an and promoted it on Facebook.

Only about 30 people attended the burning, which went viral and incited deadly riots in Afghanistan. At least 20 people were killed and many more injured after violent protests of Pastor Jones and America broke out in Afghanistan between Friday April 1, and Sunday. Reports suggest rioting has tamed but that angry crowds chanted “Death to Karzai” and “Death to America.”

The FBI says that Hezbollah has a $2.4 million bounty on Jones’ head, who vows to put the Islamic prophet Mohammed on trial next. Afghan president Hamid Karzai has called on Congress to condemn the burning.

In a roughly twenty minute interview with the pastor, Sean asks now that he sees the results of what he has done does he take any responsibility. “We take no responsibility” he confidently snaps back. While Jones continues to hammer his point that he wants to “raise awareness of the dangers of Islam” Sean makes a clear cut distinction between Islam and radical Islam.

Sean then forces Jones to confront the question why would he knowingly create a situation that put American lives in danger: “when General Patraeus, who is leading these brave men and women are fearful that you would provoke a situation where the troops’ lives are in jeopardy, why would you ignore that despite the consequences they told you it would be? I would heed that warning and admonition. Why won’t you?"

The Taliban is far from defeated and will soon shift tactics towards political assassinations, according to the number two American general in Afghanistan.

At a Pentagon briefing Tuesday, Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez, head of the NATO Joint Command and Deputy Commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, pointed to valuable progress made this year, but said "the Taliban's not on the ropes yet."

Rodriguez said he believes that during the remaining months of winter, typically a slow period for attacks, the Taliban would alter its strategy for the warmer months to focus more intently on carrying out assassinations of local officials who have cooperated with allied forces.

"They're going to come back with a different type of strategy... which I believe is going to be focused on the leadership much more than it ever has, the political leadership... and the government leaders,” Rodriguez said. "They will not be as direct in their confrontations as they were last year, I believe."

Among the tactics he expects they'll employ are the use of assassination squads and more improvised explosives devices (IEDS), such as roadside bombs, already the deadliest weapon at the Taliban's disposal.

According to Pentagon figures, IED attacks jumped from roughly 9,000 in 2009 to nearly 14,500 in 2010 as the U.S. surge of 30,000 troops fanned out across Afghanistan to engage the Taliban. The death toll rose as well. The makeshift landmines killed 268 American troops in 2010, 100 more than the previous year and the number of service members wounded by the devices was up 178 percent to 3,366.

Rodriguez says the commanders on the ground are not to the point yet of recommending how many of the approximately 100,000 U.S troops will be asked to leave in July, when President Obama has said the withdrawal of U.S. forces will begin.

To get to the point of withdrawal, Rodriguez said, Afghan security forces need to be properly trained. And while he said the Afghan Army is much improved over the last year, the police are still in bad shape. In addition to a shortage of trainers, the police force suffers from high rates of illiteracy, corruption, drug abuse and desertion.

During a NATO summit in Lisbon late last year, leaders discussed a plan to increase the size of the Afghan Security Forces to 378,000 men by October 2011, 70,000 more than originally sought. Commanders in the field and defense officials are in disagreement about the plan, some arguing that by building the force too quickly will mean lowering the already poor standards for recruitment, sending the police and Army into a downward spiral. Rodriguez said the plan is still being discussed.

As for Pakistan, Rodriguez echoed the repeated call for that nation’s military to do more to suppress Islamist radicals and Taliban fighters hiding in its northwestern tribal regions. But this time he had a new message for the Pakistanis: we can do it with or without you.

"We're going to encourage them to do more, because that makes it easier on what we're doing. But I think it's still doable without them," Rodriguez said. If Pakistan's military decided not to go into the lawless Waziristan region, Rodriguez said, "that's not a mission-stopper."

Officials Scramble to Review Emerging Afghan War Documents for 'Damage'

As if the release of more than 75,000 classified documents on the Afghanistan war weren't enough, the whistleblower group behind the leak said Monday that another 15,000 are on the way -- sending officials scrambling to screen the documents as they emerge for "potential damage" to U.S. security.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan told reporters Monday that the military takes the leak "very seriously" and is in the process of reviewing the information. Wikileaks.org, the website that released the records, claims the full set is more than 91,000 pages -- Lapan said it could take "weeks" to review all of them as they are released.

"As they are made available, we will be looking at them to try to determine the potential damage to lives of our service members and our coalition partners, whether they reveal sources and methods and any potential damage to national security," he said.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said he released 76,000 documents and that the remaining 15,000 were being withheld pending further review. He said some would be released and others would be withheld until it is safe to release them.

Al-Qaeda claimed the failed December 25 bombing of a US-bound aircraft in a statement picked up by US monitors Monday as the jihadists threatened attacks on Western targets and Yemen vowed no let-up in its campaign against them.

President Barack Obama accepted the Nobel Peace Prize by laying out a detailed case for war, making the argument that the Afghanistan conflict is necessary to keep America and other nations safe. {Watch The Video}

“We must begin by acknowledging the hard truth,” Obama said, repeatedly evoking the notion of a “just war.” “We will not eradicate violent conflict in our lifetimes. There will be times when nations — acting individually or in concert — will find the use of force not only necessary but morally justified.”

Obama quoted presidents and past peace prize recipients like Martin Luther King, who preached non-violence, yet said such ideals could not be his only guide, as the commander-in-chief of a nation at war on two fronts.
