Dealing with Rejection

2019-08-30T19:44:00.002-04:00

Hey everyone,

I hope you all have wonderful plans for the holiday weekend. As for myself, my little one and I will be having fun and hopefully sampling some good food in PA.

I wanted to see how everyone was and let you know what I have been up to. I am working on a few projects. One of the children's books that I submitted to a big-name agent did not make the cut. However, I will keep pressing on. Being an author means more than just celebrating victories but learning from setbacks.

Are you an author or a reader? Which types of books do you like to read and/or write?

...A Penny for Your Thoughts?

While I have been working on my pre-launch of the new 'The Shaky Shelf' website, I have been researching the best ways to communicate with my readers. It has been difficult trying to figure this out since Google has gotten rid of Google+. For those of you who are still here, I would like to thank you for sticking it out. I promise, you will not be disappointed.

I would love to know what kind of content you would like to see on the new blog/website. Please comment below!

Updates and New Releases!

2019-04-06T13:36:00.003-04:00

Good afternoon everyone! I hope that you are all enjoying your Spring thus far. I wanted to touch base since I have not blogged in quite some time. My goal for this year is to revamp The Shaky Shelf. I am unsure as to whether I will remain on the blogger platform or switch to another one, such as Word Press.

In any case, I will continue posting here and update you on what is going on. I have released new books since my last post:

'Happy Birthday to Me!' (free for a limited time)

'This is my Bucket'

Hi Everyone! What are you doing?

2018-08-13T23:00:00.001-04:00

I apologize for the long hiatuses. I have been extremely busy to say the least. I am working on several projects including one epic novel!

I realize that sometimes I can get caught up in the "All-or-nothing" frame of mind where...if I have not completed my larger works, I should stop writing entirely until I have completed said works.

I no longer subscribe to that idea and believe that as long as you are writing and writing your passion...that is enough. Getting caught up in the minute details of such things can actually be a hindrance not only to you as a writer but your self-growth overall.

One of the titles that I was working on is now complete. It is entitled 'This is my Bucket'. It is a picture book about the power of imagination.

Grab your copy here!

Thank you so much for sticking with me as an author. There are several great works that are in production that I would love to share with you.

What books have you been reading lately? Leave me a comment!

Hello All!

2017-11-13T21:38:00.001-05:00

I have been away for a while. There have been a lot of changes happening lately (some good and some not so much). That being said, I have been working on some really interesting stuff including: children's books and a fantasy novel (stay posted). I was so excited that I had finally found a publishing house that did not require an agent! I decided that I would put all of my fear aside and present a polished package to them in hopes that they would bite. Unfortunately, as passionate as I was about that particular project, the review period had gone by (roughly 6 months) and nothing!

As you can imagine, my pride had taken a hit. Being turned down by a publishing house is rough. It is the equivalent of someone telling you that your beautiful baby..the one that you were so proud of, was hideous. Actually, I sent out two children's books to two different houses. It didn't hurt so much when the other title was not picked up..it hurt but not as much as my beautifully-crafted love-child. As much as I wanted to sulk..I decided to shop the book to another publisher and am now awaiting their reply. I still want to go after this original publisher but I have decided that I will specifically create a title that fits with their style as opposed to having a title already created and trying to make it fit (if that makes sense).

Being an author is hard work. It is not all peaches and cream and some (like myself) still have a 9-5 that they go to every day and while I love my job, I look forward to a time when I can do what I do best..create.

What have you been up to lately? Would you care to share some of your successes and struggles? What makes you tick? Why do you want to write?

What is holding you back as a writer?

2015-07-07T08:30:00.000-04:00

As I sit here at my laptop peering into the pale white screen. I can’t help but wonder “Where are the words?” and “Why do the words come when I am everywhere BUT next to paper or my computer? We’ve all had those times where we began an ambitious journey down the road of novel writing. We’ve also been to a precipice in our writing where we hit writer’s block. I don’t mean writer’s block where you just need to take a small break. I mean writer’s block to the point where you wonder if you should even go on and wonder if you will ever turn this “writing thing” into more than just a hobby.

Can you relate? Your friends and family tell you that maybe you should “get your head out of the clouds” and focus on or find a job when what you really want to do is write. “Maybe they’re right.” You say to yourself as you stare at that cup of coffee from a few hours ago that you allowed to get cold and wonder if you should warm it up a third time.

Religious or not..we all have our demons. I mean demons not in a spiritual sense but in a self-defeating sense. Our demons tell us that the naysayers are correct and that our lives would be better served underneath a demeaning boss because well..the benefits are good. These demons also tell us that we are not good enough; that we will never be the next Rowling or Grisham so why try?

Hold on..ask yourself this question: How many times have you allowed the demons in your life to hold you back from things that you wanted to do because of fear? Do you recall what the consequences were? How would your life have differed if you had in fact followed your instincts? The only failure lies in that which we have never tried. This means that if you try it and succeed..then great! That was the goal and it is so rewarding to see something positive come to fruition. However, if you try something and it doesn’t quite pan out, there is usually a lesson to be learned. Assess it, learn from it, and move on.

If you ever find yourself stuck at any part of the writing process here are some practical tips that I have and still employ to this day:

Put the keyboard down, step away from the computer, and no one gets hurt! Sometimes we really do need a break from the screen. I find that staring at a blank screen for hours trying to force something out can be extremely counterproductive. Instead, go for a walk and look at your surroundings. Is there something that you can use as a writing cue? What about that nosy neighbor? Is she nosy because she’s hiding something herself? What about the neighbor who has an awesome car and house but never really leaves the house? Does he have a successful home business or is he a drug kingpin? There are many possibilities but you get the picture

Go out. Maybe to the bookstore. Why is that guy acting like he’s reading a book when clearly he’s looking at you? Does he have a genuine interest? Does he think you look familiar? Does he have something more sinister in mind like; following you home and stalking you until he can make his move to kill you? While it’s drastic and highly unlikely it does make for an interesting story. Maybe he’d like to chop you up and serve you as the new “Chef’s Midnight Special” at his family’s diner.

Take baby steps. Maybe you don’t have it in you to start or continue your novel today. Maybe you could just work on a small portion like one of the characters or the title of the book. If you don’t feel like writing at all, do some reading. Read an interesting book..whatever the subject matter and have some fun. You might even get an idea or two from your reading. When I’m really in a rut and feeling discouraged, I look up agents and publishing houses just to see who and what is out there. I draw inspiration from it because I think “That could be MY agent or publishing house!” Find out who critiques or publishes your genre of writing and write down some of the names. Of course it is way too early to contact them but isn’t it nice to dream? I believe in positive thought in addition to action. If you claim something and really believe in it, you will likely succeed. Take oxygen for example: you don’t see it but you are breathing it so it MUST be there! Treat your dreams like that; you don’t see it but it’s already there. Act as if it is oxygen; as if you have no choice but to believe..lest you cease to breathe.

Writing is probably one of the hardest jobs I have ever had because there isn’t always immediate gratification. In addition..there is no one there to hold your hand or to micromanage you. You are essentially on your own. This can make it difficult to stay motivated. However, if you keep working at it and chipping away at your goals and believing that what you desire is already there for the taking, you have no choice but to succeed.

Create your own ebook

2014-01-17T18:47:00.001-05:00

As writers we all have a time when we need something to do in between big projects. Large projects are great sources of income and revenue. However, while you're waiting for a response from publishing houses you need something to supplement your income. If you listen to naysayers, they will tell you that self-publishing is taboo. That is fine for those who are doing well enough to throw away money.

For those of us who do not have the luxury of doing that then you should consider creating your own Ebook. There are a few companies that allow you to do this like Amazon and B&N. Check out the link below to see how you can get started creating your ebook today!
