The Shapiro Family

Shapiro Summer 2010...Part 1

2010-07-14T11:25:00.006-10:00

What have we been doing this summer???
Well...
(Slideshow is at the end)

We got to Minnesota on June 2...My baby sister's 30th birthday. We got to celebrate with her, and that was really fun. She's having her first baby in August, so we had a lot of fun seeing her big belly.

We've been keeping busy with a paddleboat ride on the Mississippi River with our friends...Ilana and Daniel and thier mom Julie. Julie and I have known each other since we were really little, and we love when we get to hang out with them for the summer. We saw a bald eagle which was REALLY cool.

Sam has studying 4 days a week for his Bar-Mitzvah which will be July 9, 2011. He's prgressing nicely, and we are all really proud of him.

Haley left July 14 for 2 weeks at Camp Herzl in Wisconsin. This is her second year at this camp, and Sam's been going for 4 years. She had a great time, made new friends and survived the thunderstorms and tornado warnings.

Sam went to 2 classes at the Scienc Museum. He took one class where he designed a miniature golf course- His was Hawaii themed. His other class was designing and creating a computer video game.

Charlie is back at "Farm Camp." It's actually the preschool I went to a (very) long time ago. They have horses, llamas, goats, bunnies, chickens, etc. and a pool, arts and crafts, science, etc. He LOVES going there, and it is always a highlight of his summer.

The day we picked Haley up at the bus stop from camp, we whisked her off to a Twins game at the new stadium. We had a great time, and the stadium is fantastic. I even got to meet up with a sorority sister who live in Germany who I haven't seen since my wedding...Thank you facebook!!!

Early the next morning we went to New York. We spent a few days in the city with Ar's parents, Jerry and Joan- celebrating their anniversary, His sister, Ilana, and her her two boys, Ben and Eli. We went on a Circle Line tour to the Statue of Liberty, The HUGE Toys R Us, where we met Spiderman and Ironman, saw Mary Poppins on Broadway, and I saw a friend from MN who I haven't seen since I was in High School...again, thank you facebook!

We then took the train upstate to Copake, NY where Ari's family has a beautiful farm. We were joined by Shapiro Family reunion with Ari's cousin Larry, his wife Caren and thier daughters, Amanda, Carly and Ilyssa. It was fantastic to reconnect with them. We all got along so well, that we're planning on vacationing with them again soon.
Ari's cousin Sari came up with her boyfriend, Aaron. We approve immensely, and we hope to welcome him to the family soon...no pressure guys!
There were 20 of us, and we had a blast!!!
We rented a pontoon and some kayaks on Copake lake, rode horses, swam in the pool at the farm, and ate a Chinese Restaurant I've been thinking about since we were there 3 years ago...it did not disappoint.
Back to the city for one night, and Ari and I went with Sari and Aaron to see American Idiot on Broadway. Many of you know of my great love for Green Day and Billie Joe. Although Billie Joe was, of course, not in the show, the singing, dancing an denergy were unbelievable. The show was amazing, and I highly recommend it if you have the chance to see it.

Back to MN, and we quickly had to get ready for the baby shower. Haley and I hosted a baby shower for my baby sis. We had about 20 people for brunch, games and gifts. We all had a great time, and it was nice to be able to do something nice for my sister. I've waited a long time for one of my sisters to have a baby. I mean, I've given them 3 children to spoil, and I'm ready for my turn.

We rented a boat on the St. Croix River. We were out for 4 hours with my sister, Nancy, who came in from Maui also. (So fun to have all 3 sisters together. It doesn't happen very often). We all drove the boat, and had fun exploring the river, and there are some great photos of the kids jumping off the boat.

Lastly, we sent Sam off to camp this morning. He'll be at Camp Herzl for 3 weeks, and he's looking forward to hanging out with the great friend's he's made here the past few summers at camp.

Enjoy the photos from summer part 1. We are having a great summer so far, and we hope you are too!

Haley Lei Day

2010-05-24T19:50:00.002-10:00

These are photos and video from Haley's Lei Day performance. The video is very grainy-Sam's been playing with my video camera, so I'm blaming him.

Bumper Boats, rock walls and trapolines!

2010-05-03T12:00:00.009-10:00

OK, last post of the day. I swear!!!

We went to a birthday party yesterday at the Sports Park. The birthday girl asked for no presents, but instead to bring food for the food bank. She gave out a prize to the kid who brought in the heaviest bag of food. Haley won!

Sam and Charlie on the bumper boats

Haley has her game face

Charlie even got to go solo...

Check him out on the climbing wall!!!

He's so high up there (heehee...nice angle Sam)

Feeling like the bigkids

Sam made it all the way up the 2nd hardest

Look how close he was the hardest. His arms were about 1 inch to short to really get a good enough grip to pull him up, but you can see how close he was

Charlie did the big bounce trampoline. He didn't love it, and stopped early...but he was smiling (above) when he got off. Just so glad he's a kid who's willing to try new things.

Random April pictures

2010-05-03T11:20:00.003-10:00

I need to explain a few things in this post, but the slide shows don't give me enough room...

The videos of Haley (please ignore her unzipped shorts)...the first one is the 3rd grade class performing the virtue of the week. Every week at Carden, the kids study virtue. At the dance assembly every year, the 3rd grade class does a dramatic interpretation of the week's virtue.
The second video is of her dance performance.

The video of Sam...for those of you who don't live in Hawaii, May Day is Lei Day. Many schools i the islands have May Day performances. Seabury had theirs on April 30 (And so qualifies to be in April photos). The 6th graders and seniors teamed up for a group performance. There is a royal court complete with a processional, and every grade does it's own performance of music, hula and song. Charlie was climbing all over me, so the video is shaky. Ifyou get ill watching it, I totally understand. Sam promised me that he'd smile for my photos...yeah right!

Easter at Children's Garden

2010-05-03T10:47:00.003-10:00

Every year the kids make their own hats. Love it!!! They
also make their own Easter baskets.

They parade on a little stage...

And then they hunt for Easter eggs.
This is Remy, his girlfriend.

Happy 12th Birthday Sam!

2010-05-03T10:15:00.003-10:00

March 31 was Sam's 12th birthday. Our good friends the Dodge Family were visiting from Minnesota, so they came over for dinner and birthday cake (Well, cupcakes and cookie bars).

Ari and Sam enjoyed a game of darts before dinner

Sam got his own stand up paddle...

Spring Break 2010

2010-03-25T12:22:00.002-10:00

So, I was worried about the cold and snow, but we had mostly bluebird days skiing.
We stayed at our friends house...Thank you Bobby!!! His house on Garfield Bay, just outside of Sandpoint, is beautiful with just amazing views. We made fires every night, and loved to snuggle up after a day on the mountain.
We skiied almost every day at Schweitzer. The kids and I took 3 days of lessons...then we just played the rest of the trip. I have lots of videos and photos below.
We got to visit with lots of friends too. The Evans families (they used to live on Maui) live in Sandpoint, and they just started a coffee roasting business. It was fun to catch up with them and see how big their kids have gotten.
The Wilcox family (also used to live on Maui) also came to visit from Spokane. Amy and I sat by the fire and chatted while the dads took the kids on a nice, mellow hike.
We had a great vacation, and we are already talking about when we get to go back.
Enjoy our photos...

As if I didn't inundate you enough with photos...I realized that I forgot to add a series of cute pictures from the pool at the Kea Lani where my grandparents stayed.

February

2010-03-11T09:30:00.018-10:00

What a big month!
We had a really fun month with a lot of activity. There are lots of pictures, and lots of videos to enjoy! My kids interviewing my grandparents in the first slide show is great. and the videos of the kids going (and me) going down the water slides are really fun too.
Feb 1-9: My grandparents Visit to Maui

Feb 5: Haley's school talent show

Feb 12: Charlie's Valentines Day Party
Charlie made tissue paper flowers for his valentines this year. Actually, I made them, but he DID pick out the tissue paper, and told me which colors to layer for them. He passed out valentines, decorated a cookie, and got to play with his friends.

Feb 12: BON JOVI!!!!!!!
So, I'm sure you've all seen the video of Charlie singing Bon Jovi. If for some reason you missed it, click here and scroll down to find those super videos. Bon Jovi came to Oahu for 2 concerts. We knew we had to go! We got awesome tickets, and made a week end out of it. We stayed with our super good friends, the Carharts, and we enjoyed the show, the company and the whole week end.
This was Haley and Charlie's first rock concert. I took Haley to see Demi Lovato last summer, but that doesn't really count. Sam came with us to see Aerosmith. If you ask Charlie, however, he'll tell you this was his 2nd rock concert. We saw our friend, Matt Dodge, perform last summer (Click HERE to read about his band and hear his music), and Charlie says Rockstar Matt was his first concert. For those who don't know, Matt was the boy (Now a 22 year old man...wow!) who I babysat for all through high school and college. The Dodges are family to me, and words cannot express how proud I am of Matt for his talent and pursuing his dreams (can you hear the haros in the background?)I was babysitting him and his little brother Nick in Hawaii when I met Ari...
OK, the pictures...

This is a great picture of Charlie watching the show. He sang loudly at the songs he knew, and studied the show when he didn't.

Singing Livin' on a Prayer

Haley sang and danced her butt off the whole time!

Charlie wore his rock 'n roll jacket (Thank you Morgan for outgrowing it)

We're gearing up for the show.

Feb 13: Oahu waterpark with Coral and Kimber
We've been to Oahu tons of times, but we've never done the waterpark. We took out a second mortgage on our home, and ponied up for a day at the park. The kids had a blast. Check out the fun videos of us going down the slides and playing at the park. Our friends, Kimber and Coral met us there. SO fun!!!

Feb 14: Charlie's first snorkel
The Carharts live in Ko Olina which has a few lagoons. These lagoons have no waves, and it was the perfect spot to try Charlie with snorkeling gear. He's a total fish. He dives off the side, jumps off the diving board, and can swim his basic strokes...and for quite a while. He loves the water! He got the snorkeling thing in like 5 minutes!
Ari got an underwater camera for Hanukkah this year, and Sam will showyou in the video below how cool it is!

Feb 20: Marriott with the Baums
The Baum family- Julie, Ben, Ilana, Daniel and Alicja came for a week to visit from Minnesota. We played in the pools at their hotel, went to the beach, played and ate. It was a really fun visit, and it was not nearly long enough. The Marriott has a really fun pirate ship kiddie pool. The kids all had a great time (until they found some poop in the pool... and then we were out of there. The risks of using the kddie pool)

Feb 21: Zip Line at Piiholo Stables

Feb 24: Dance Party
On the Baums last night here, we had a BBQ at our house with them and our friends the Magys (Also visiting from MN). After dinner, Club Shapiro was in full swing.Dark with the disco lights going...Ilana and Daniel didn't want to leave. We know how to PARTY!!!

Feb 27: Tsunami
My sister Nancy showed up about 4am. She lives just feet from the beach, and being the party animal that she is...she heard about the earthquake in Chile and impending tsunami before the sirens even started. At about 6am, the warning sirens began, and we filled containers with fresh water, got out candles and flashlights, got ready for the impending big tsunami that was headed our way. The news showed continuous footage of past tsunamis and we just sat at our house, looked out at the ocean, and watched the whales, and more whales...but no tsunami. We're all very thankful that the tsunami was as small as it was (about 3.2 feet), and that there was no destruction. However, since we had so much warning, and everyone had plenty of time to get out of harms way, a little more to see would have been nice.
So, this is the view from our lanai at the time that the tsunami was scheduled to hit Maui...

Feb 28: No rain, no rainbows
This was just to make all of you cold mainlanders jealous. Even when we wake up in the morning to winds and rain...we have true beauty.

January

2010-03-10T19:25:00.018-10:00

New Years Day:
We went to a fun New Years Eve party with tons of fireworks, friends and drinks. We have a great view of the midnight fireworks, so we raced home at about 11:50, and we just made it...all of us!
It's our tradition to go to the beach on New Years Day.

Jan 2: Iao Valley

Sam found a great relaxing rock

The boys are getting ready to hike downstream

This was the first time Charlie went with the big kids

Swimming in the pools of the stream...sooooo cold, but even Charlie didn't mind it.

Haley and Charlie with Grandma

Jan 9: Whale Watch
I know everyone laways thinks they went out on the BEST whalewatch ever! But we really did! The whales were unbelievable! One whale came up on one side of the boat, and then went under the boat and came up on the other. 3 whales breached at the same time super close to the boat...just like at sea world (oh don't get me started on the sea world thing, I'm just using it as an analogy). Super fun, and the kids, my sister and my mom had a great time!

Jan 24: Vikings play in conference championships
We were in full Vikings mania for the month of January. It was a heart-breaking loss, but we did have a fun time watching the game, and hte Vikings gave us fans a lot to be proud of this year.

Haley and my sister Nancy always raid the fridge for my Bubbe's Pickles. If you like real garlic homemade pickles, you must try these pickles. They are very pricey, and you will never want another brand of pickle again.

It's like a Bud Light ad...Nancy works for Budweiser :)
Jan 30: Maui Ocean Center

My grandparents came in town for 2 weeks. They haven't been here in 9 years, and it was great to show them around Maui. The weather was a little funny while they were here with some wind and light rain. In a way it was nice because it wasn't real hot, but it did make touring a little tricky.
Their first day was a trip to the Maui Ocean Center.

The Rest of November...

2010-03-10T15:35:00.002-10:00

So it has come to my attention that I am a terrible blogger since it's march and I haven't posted anything since November. So, since I now feel guilty and anxious that I am behind on something, I need to catch up. I will post one update for each month over the next day or so.

Enjoy the updates.

THANKSGIVING:

Every year, the preschool does a really cute Thanksgiving feast on the Wed before Thanksgiving. The kids all make their own costumes, and then they perform, and then we eat a potluck lunch prepared by the families. I totally blew it. I had the times all wrong, and we showed up JUST as the kids were done performing and lunch was starting. Charlie had no idea what he had missed (thank goodness) and he performed a solo for me...a little hard to hear since it was really windy, but cute anyway...and he still wore the costume and had fun with his friends. If the video doesn't play, click HERE to be directed to the blog where it should work.

On Thanksgiving day, we had a nice morning at the beach, and then a nice casual and yummy meal. My once-a-year tofurkey was a treat! Since Ari left that night for Europe (and we had yummy desserts), we celebrated his dad's birthday also.

A nice, low-key family holiday.

December

2009-12-16T16:07:00.016-10:00

Here's December- Blogger is not uploading my videos, so they are all in smileboxes. If they don't play in this email, click here to go directly to the blog.

Dec 4: Haley's 9th Birthday

Since we already had her big party and Ari was out of town, we had a simple celebration. Her Nana and PopPop went out for dinner with us at Longhi's. She got lots of nice presents (check out the HUGE Husky that kept freaking people out at the restaurant) and even wore her new make-up from Aunty Nancy (which she applied herself just before dinner).

Dec 6: Sam's piano recital

Nana and Pop Pop were able to join us at the recital

Sam and Ms. Marti the piano teacher (who is from Minnesota and used to teach at McPhail Music Center).

December 13: Charlie's birthday party/Hanukkah party

Ari came back from Europe on the morning of Charlie's party, and my mom flew in the night before. We went to the Ohana Ranch of Maui. They have the cutest miniature horses, and I totally want one. They can't be any more work than our crazy dog!

Hanukkah Party

We went right from Charlie's Birthday party to the Community Hanukkah Party.

Haley and my mom

Sam and Nancy, my sister

Haley and her friend eating fried latkes and donuts...yum!!

Sam, Haley, Charlie and some friends lighting the menorah

Dec 15: Charlie turns 4

It is tradition in our house to have donuts instead of birthday cake. My kids aren't real into birthday cake, and it means I don't have any leftover cake (which I would finish off as soon as the kiddies were out of eyesight).

December 16: Charlie's starring role in Holiday performance

Last Beach Day of 2009:

Sam loves to paddle board, just like daddy. He's so sweet, he always take Haley out with him on the back of the board.

Halloween, Swim Meet and Party!!!

2009-11-11T14:35:00.006-10:00

I didn't realize how much has been going on the past few weeks...so here are a few updates (including Halloween pictures and a swim meet)...

Nov 10-11
We had a somewhat last minute and fairly early slumber party for Haley last night. Her birthday is December 4, but with the Thanksgiving break and Ari's European travels at the end of this month for 3 weeks...it was no or never. Enjoy the slideshow, and turn up the volume so you can rock out to the 2 theme songs of the party!

OCTOBER 31
Today was a real busy day! We had a soccer game, a swim meet...and of course trick or treating.

Halloween Night:

Swim meet:
This was Haley's 1st swim meet.
She was dq from the breast stroke and the fly (but with her times she would have placed 7th and 5th respectively). On freestyle, she placed 3rd (and won her heat).

October 30
Every year Charlie's preschool does a really cute Halloween carnival. Each of the 3 classes learns a song or poem, they parade to the other classes and perform. Then they have carnival games, a bouncy castle and break their homemade pinatas.

fun carnival games

They made their own trick or treat containers- a spider

Pinata

Aerosmith
On October 20, Ari and I took Sam to his first rock concert. Aerosmith played here, and we had fantastic seats. Steve Tyler performed like he'd never hurt his shoulder, Joe Perry split his pants, and Sam was exposed (I hope for the first time) to people openly smoking pot (We had some funny discussions about it during the show- Sam was a little nervous that the cops would swoop down and start arresting people). Anyway, it was a great show, and a GREAT first rock concert for Sam!

Haley's Fall Fest Assembly

2009-10-23T21:59:00.001-10:00

This morning was Haley's Fall Fest Assembly. Their class did the cutest presentation. This is a long at 7 minutes, but soooo worth it. Enjoy!

SOOOO... my computer was not cooperating and uploading photos, so I made a few scrapbooks and lsideshows to show what we've been doing the past few weeks. Enjoy!

Carden Fall Festival
Today was the Carden Academy (Haley's school) Fall Festival. They had pony cart rides, organic/local pumpkins adn produce, games, food, music...
Today was also the AYSO Friendship Games. This is an annual event with any of the Maui teams playing tournament style, but... the kids (and coaches and parents) are judged by their sportsmanship, and can lose points if they do not show "friendship."

Yes, three posts in one night...but I had to break them up a little bit :)
These are our summer photos. The Childrens Museum, Nickelodeon Universe and hanging out with family and friends were huge highlights.

We went to my sister's house for dinner one night. She came out with a can of Reddi-Whip. Well, Charlie knew what to do and tilted his head back ready for a squirt, and I obliged. When my brother-in-law, Bill tried to do the Same, Charlie was squirming and it got all over Charlie's face...Thus, a food fight began.

Summer Camp

2009-08-21T21:50:00.002-10:00

For the past few years, Sam has been going to Herzl camp inWisconsin. It is a sleep-away camp, and this year, Haley was old enough to attend as well. They did not go at the same time, however. Haley went first for one week. She had so much fun that she wanted to hide in Sam's suitcase when he went a month later. They have both made great friends that got to see outside of camp as well. It makes for a much more fun summer...

We had a great 4th of July Weekend in Washington, DC. We spent a few days in the city and then spent about 5 days with Ari's sister, Ilana, and her family. It was a great combo of museums, sightseeing and relaxation. Cousin Sari from New york even popped in for a few days.

Cute Charlie Videos

2009-04-29T10:03:00.004-10:00

Charlie LOVES to be a rock start. Infact, some days he wants me to call him Rock Star (As in "Rock Star, time for lunch"). Livin on a Prayer is among his favorites. You can tell he watches American Idol by the way he shakes his head and pulls the mic away when he sings a long note. I have lots more of these videos, but they take so long to upload. So, for now, you've go this. "Take my hand, we'll make I square"...doesn't get much cuter...

When we were in Vegas we went bowling. Charlie didn't have socks so he's wearing his fuzzy sock slippers. He loved the slippery shoes. They were perfect for dancing. You'll also notice that Haley gets a spare, and I happened to catch it on the video...good girl Haley!!!

Easter at Children's Garden

2009-04-29T09:56:00.003-10:00

Charlie's preschool has the cutest Easter Celebration. The kids make hats out of newspaper and then decorate them. They have a parade where the kids come out and model their hats and then have an egg hunt. He had a great time, and our friend, Michelle got to come so it was extra-special for Charlie.

Alexander Graham Bell...aka Sam.

2009-03-05T10:20:00.004-10:00

Every year at Carden, the 5th grade class hold an 1800's fair. Each student chooses some one who was alive at any time during the 1800s to study. They write a paper, and prepare a presentation for the fair. Sam chose Alexander Graham Bell. He really loves doing research, and he was really excited for this project. He did an amazing job, and we are really proud of him (and his A+ for the project).

Ari's parents were able to come and support Sam and see Jeese James, Betsy Ross, and Laura Ingalls Wilder among others...
We also brought Charlie's friend Morgan, and Morgan's cool motorcycle jacket.

Valentine's Week-end Camping

2009-03-05T09:17:00.010-10:00

We hadn't been camping since before Charlie was born. We took Valentines Day week-end, and went camping at the beach with our friends the Jansens. We had a great time despite the high winds. We had never camped at the beach before, but we all had a great time.
Look at this beautiful setting for the tent. The kids slept in the tent (Except for Haley) and Ari and blew up an air mattress and slept in the back of the minivan...how I love my minivan.
We didn't know that George was an expert fire-maker. We had a great campfire every night, and the kids loved making s'mores and lighting sparklers.
Sam and Kaulike woke up early the first morning and made this cool fort. This huge piece of wood was a great hang out for hte kids over the week end.

Ari and george were hoping to get some paddle boarding in...but the weather had other plans

Buddy and Makita chilling by the food table
We explored down the beach. Just after I took this picture, I noticed a big fish in the water...Ari said, "Not a big fish, a little shark." We got everyone out of the water, and folled the little Hammerhead down the coastline. He hung out for a while, but we couldn't get a picture of it. I've seen reef sharks while diving, but never a Hammerhead, pretty cool!

There were lots of cool trees around our campsite to climb and play on. The kids were like moenkeys...in the trees more than on the ground. This is my favorite picture of Sam ever taken!!!
Sam and Kaulike spent a long time whittling their s'mores sticks

Julia, Kaulike, Sam, Haley and Charlie
Betty and I were so glad that the guys got to spend Valentines Day together. For those that don't know, Ari and George go paddle boarding together every chance they get, and they are great freinds. They text each other often and hang out a lot. It has become a source of great jokes for Betty and I...the BFFs...and we're very happy they have each other:)On Sunday morning, the guys took the bigger kids on a hike above the Pali. They didn't get real far, but they enjoyed the views.

Fianlly, before we left on Sunday, it got warm enough for the kids to jump in to ocean for a little bit. The waves were small, but Sam didn't care. He just wanted to get on the boogie board no matter what...it was beach camping afterall.
