In today’s media landscape, the path to stardom seems to run through reality television. From VH1′s seemingly endless supply of shows that churn out recognizable characters at an assembly line pace to the uber-successful Dancing with the Stars franchise. Well, BET and Nascar hope to be able to tap into that same formula to establish a presence in previous untapped demographics for their product.

On Wednesday night, BET premiered a show called “Changing Lanes” that features a field of 30 minority drivers that will be narrowed to 10 and move into a house together, much in the spirit of MTV’s “Real World.” The show will follow the participants as they work with their cars in the shop, undergo intense physical training and compete on the track and in the classroom with the eventual goal of establishing a successful Nascar career.

Although the participants ultimate goal is to become a successful driver, the show has even greater aspirations. “Changing Lanes” hopes to develop a fan base outside of its traditional southern white roots and open the door to new marketing opportunities and sponsorships by providing exposure to drivers who would normally go unnoticed.

To achieve the first, the show attempted to give historical context to the connection between minority groups and Nascar by hi-lighting minority racing pioneer, Wendell Scott. Scott was the first and only African-American to win a Nascar event in what is now the Sprint Cup. During the show, the contestants all spoke about what Scott’s contribution to the sport meant to them and how it has enabled them to be where they are. A biographical segment about Scott’s trying journey through Nascar was also featured with voice over done by rapper Ludacris.

They hope to achieve the second goal the same way as other successful reality franchises that precede their project.

“One of the things that’s pretty much fascinated me with respect to awareness and brand building was the formula for ‘American Idol,’ ” Max Siegel, the show’s creator said Monday in a telephone interview. “By the time their records came out, went to market, the singers had a built-in fan base.”

“What really struck me as a huge impediment to be able to get corporate sponsorship was, no matter talented these athletes were, no one knew who they were,” Siegel said. “There was limited TV for the development series and, quite frankly, there was no media platform to justify an investment.”

Max Siegel, the man behind the show, is a former music executive. He currently is the global president of Dale Earnhardt Inc., and became involved in Nascar in 2003. Reggie White, a Hall of Fame NFL star, set out to start a minority-based racing team. When White died in 2004, Siegel began to spearhead the operation to bring White’s dream to fruition.

It still remains to be seen if this attempt by Nascar to to open new doors will be successful, but it is an intriguing project nonetheless.

“Not only will it allow us to tell the story of the Drive for Diversity program,” said Marcus Jadotte, the managing director of public affairs for Nascar, who oversees the sport’s diversity efforts, “but it will be for many an introduction to the sport and that is important for growing Nascar audiences but also important for encouraging young people, kids, to get involved in and take an interest in motorsports.”

Cee-lo Green is no stranger to viral internet success and he has seemingly done it again with his latest jam, “Fuck You”. Since the original video was released two weeks ago on YouTube, it has garnered almost 4 million views. The bare bones video was not much more than the lyrics of the song set against a variety of colorful backgrounds, reminiscent of the old commercials with the annoying bouncing ball over the words. Today, the former Goodie Mob star fleshed out an official version.

The song is a catchy, upbeat tune that has a 1950′s barbershop quartet feel with an obvious modern twist. It tells the story of a boy shunned by a girl that he adores and the ensuing feelings that come from seeing her with another guy of higher stature. It’s a quirky song with a hilarious bridge where Green seemingly regresses to adolescence, but the song itself is infectious.

Although his current single may be the most viral of his hits, Cee-lo has burned up the internet on previous occasions. In 2006, with his Gnarls Barkley counterpart Danger Mouse, Crazy had the internet and the radio going exactly that for an entire summer. It seemingly instantly spawned thousands of covers on youtube and became radio DJ’s default song. The duo also put out a video for another of their popular songs, Who’s Gonna Save My Soul, that also became an internet cult favorite.

The hallmark of Cee-lo’s viral success seems to be pushing artistic limits. With Who’s Gonna Save My Soul, it was a bloody, singing heart that represented the heartbreak of a bad breakup. With the official version of Fuck You, it is the striking visual of a young boy expressing his disdain of his rejection is such a jarring manner (if not just the lyrics themselves).

Fuck You can officially be certified viral by virtue of the fact that yesterday evening, I heard the song on the radio, on more than one occasion with all of the curse words dubbed out (which essentially left whole bars muted in some instances). The song also has been remixed numerous times, most notably by 50 cent. Despite the fact that viral circulation and radio penetration are pluses for any artist, I’m hoping the song doesn’t get played to the point of over saturation (a la Andre 3000′s Hey Ya).

Cee-lo’s album, LadyKiller, will be released in the US and in the UK on October 4th.

Bolt hadn’t lost an individual race in two years until last month, when Gay beat him in Stockholm in a 100- meter race.

Bolt says his priority is major events, where’s been beating the American.

The Jamaican sprinter told BBC radio on Wednesday that “deep down I think he probably just hates my guts.”

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Bolt won both the 100 and 200 in world-record times, and helped Jamaica win another gold and set another world record in the 400-meter relay.

A year later, he again set world records in the 100 and 200 at the world championships in Berlin.

The event covered a range of Apple innovations including a revamped Apple TV device and the next generation of iTunes which included some social integration. An announcement was also made that the iPod classic was being discontinued. Despite all of the other news, Jobs made it clear that the iPod was the “entree of the day.”

iPod Shuffle

The popular iPod shuffle is entering it’s fourth generation. It will be available in a 4GB capacity at an enticing $49 price point. Aesthetically, the Shuffle returned to the smaller body structure similar to the first and second generations. Software-wise, it is the same as the last generation with playlist integration and voice over.

iPod Nano

The Nano has been completely overhauled. As has been speculated for weeks on the internet, the Nano will have a multitouch display like the Touch model. It will be available in an 8GB and 16GB version for $149 and $179 respectively. It will feature a clip like the Nano and be available in seven colors including a Product(RED) model.

iPod Touch

Last, but certainly not least is the new Touch. This is definitely the marquee item of the event. The new Touch will have the the widely praised Retina Display and a front facing camera that enables Apple’s Face Time, both of which were first introduced earlier this year on the iPhone4. This generation has also lost a bit of weight, being both thinner and lighter than previous models. There is also a rear facing camera that records in 720p HD and it will run the new iOS 4.1. There will be an 8GB model for $229, a 32GB for $299 and a 64GB for $399.

On Tuesday, it was announced that his iconic mane was insured for one million dollars by the British reinsurer, Lloyd’s of London. The policy was taken out by shampoo conglomerate, Head and Shoulders, that has an advertising campaign anchored on Polamalu’s head, figuratively and literally.

The popular ads feature Polamalu making references to his hair during post-gmae interviews and largely become internet sensations in their own right.

Polamalu began growing his hair in 2000 as a tribute to his Samoan heritage and is noted for its length and uncanny thickness. So much so in fact, Head and Shoulders is on record stating that his hair is “so ridiculously long and full that end to end [his hair] spans 100 football fields.”

The press release by Head and Shoulders:

August 30, 2010 – head & shoulders® announced today that they are taking out a $1 million dollar insurance policy on Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu’s trademark hair. The head & shoulders spokesperson’s iconic mane will be protected throughout the NFL season by the world’s leading insurance agency, Lloyd’s of London.

No other NFL player’s hair has been so recognizable to warrant this first ever type of insurance policy. In fact, Troy’s hair is so ridiculously full and thick that end to end it spans 100 football fields.

“head & shoulders has gone above and beyond by insuring my Samoan locks for a cool $1 million dollars. This reinforces that my full and thick hair is unstoppable,” says Troy Polamalu.

Fans can log on to Troyshair.com to learn more about Troy’s secret weapon, head & shoulders’ Hair Endurance for Men. The website also hosts more information on the insurance policy, a fun interactive experience, and opportunities to win outrageously cool NFL prizes including a Super Bowl XLV VIP package.

While Earl isn’t expected to make landfall in the U.S., even a small jog to the west from its current track will have an impact on the mid-Atlantic states, said Bill Read, director of the National Hurricane Center.

Earl, a Category 4 storm, or the second-strongest on the five-step Saffir Simpson scale, is on a track that would take it just past North Carolina’s Cape Hatteras early Sept. 3 and then on toward Nantucket and Cape Cod in Massachusetts later that day, according to the center.

President Obama and the White House staff are going out of their way to avoid the now infamous “Mission Accomplished” moment regarding Iraq that has become a hallmark of his predecessor’s presidency. White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs, has stated that Tuesday night’s presidential address will not be a declaration of any overt victory in the conflict. Yet, it will serve as a platform to honor the men and women who have served valiantly and made the ultimate sacrifice, and mark a transition in our mid-east strategy as a whole.

The speech will be Obama’s second presidential address since taking office, the first coming on June 15 when he spoke to the nation about the BP oil disaster, the challenges that it posed and the plan to go forward.

This speech is geared to do much of the same.

While the speech has not been released yet, aides have stated that the speech will follow the format of his first. The key points of the speech will be marking the end of a combat presence in Iraq and a drawdown to 50,000 troops, about the difficult task of assisting in the formation of a real and sustainable democratic government in the war-torn country and about the new role that the remaining troops will undertake.

“We will be their ally, but the responsibility of charting the future of Iraq first and foremost belongs to the Iraqis,” White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told CNN’s “American Morning.”

The speech is expected to be short, only lasting 15 to 20 minutes, but significant, marking a pivotal turning point in US-Iraqi relations.

Indicative of the political climate, House Republicans will make a “prebuttal” to the president’s speech tonight. House Leader, John Boehner will speak in Milwaukee to about 10,000 people on Tuesday afternoon about a range of defense and foreign policy matters, but the focus will be the US’s course of action in regards to Iraq.

Boehner stated in an op-ed piece that the same surge that the president and vice president opposed is what made it possible for us to take the action we are taking now. He continued to say that he is not convinced that the “advisory” presence of 50,000 troops are enough to guide Iraq through this tumultuous period and sustain the progress we have already made.

Watch the President’s speech tonight, 8pm ET.

But, for all of my real 80′s babies (pre ’86) and those that came before, sitting glued to the tv on a saturday morning in your pj’s with a big bowl of Rice Krispies was as big a part of your life as dinners with the family. Well, the good folks as Complex decided to compile a list of the 50 greatest saturday morning cartoons to take you back to your childhood — ahhh, nothing like a little nostalgia. All of my personal favorites, and some that I’m ashamed to admit I watched, made the cut. Voltron and Thundercats literally made me the man I am today, well…something like that. The Smurfs were a lock on the list but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little upset about the fact that everyone always neglects the Snorks. They were like smurfs that could swim, c’mon people! And don’t think I didn’t notice that G.I. Joe is mysteriously absent. Check the whole list over at Complex.com.

A mere three months ago, social networking giant, Facebook went through what can only be described as a public relations nightmare regarding their cavalier approach to subscribers’ private information. The conglomerate unveiled a series of new settings that were set to share user information with other sites by default and made the process of opting to retain privacy exceedingly difficult, all without informing its members until it became a national media story.

In the immediate aftermath, the reaction from the public was swift. Users of facebook created group pages expressing their discontent with the site’s recent actions, with the most popular among them garnering tens of thousands of supporters. It even escalated to the level of some publicly advocating either legal or political action.

With the fallout from this incident just recently being extinguished, one would assume that other tech giants would heed the lesson of the case, Privacy v. Facebook. Quite the contrary.

At the Techonomy conference earlier this month, CNBC host Julia Boorstin correspondent sat down with Google CEO, Eric Schmidt. The focus of the conference was on the way that technology is and will continue to change society. Schmidt’s predictions on the subject are enough to give the most staunch tech geek, at the least, a moment of pause.

Boorstin started her line of questioning based on a statement that Schmidt made while speaking at the conference, essentially saying that anonymity is a dangerous thing. “In a world of asynchronous threats, it is too dangerous for there not to be some way to identify you,” he said.

Schmidt was quick to make a distinction between privacy and anonymity though.

“Privacy is incredibly important. Privacy is not the same thing as anonymity. It’s very important that Google and everyone else respects people’s privacy. People have a right to privacy; it’s natural; it’s normal. It’s the right way to do things.”

After that though, he continued on to explain why he felt anonymity, specifically on the internet, posed a serious security threat. He compared retaining anonymity on the internet to attempting to do the same in the courtroom, an analogy that to put mildly, is a stretch:

If you are trying to commit a terrible, evil crime, it’s not obvious that you should be able to do so with complete anonymity. There are no systems in our society which allow you to do that. Judges insist on unmasking who the perpetrator was. So absolute anonymity could lead to some very difficult decisions for our governments and our society as a whole and I don’t think we want that either.

Taken on its on merits, the statements may be interpreted as slightly skewed due to one man’s proximity to such issues. But, when coupled with Facebook’s blatant disregard for user privacy, Google’s documented issues with improperly disseminating information through its new Chrome service and past comments from other leaders of tech giants, this issue could serve as cause for alarm.

Sun Microsystems CEO, Scott McNealy, is on record saying, “you have zero privacy anyway.” Fellow tech pioneer and Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison stated, “the privacy you’re concerned about is largely and illusion.”

The irony of the issue is that the very companies that have the most access to personal information are the same ones that are forecasting this ominous path. Facebook recently reached 500 million users and specifically state that any information uploaded onto the site becomes Facebook property. Google is estimated to receive more than 300 million hits daily. Both are in the business of mining and sharing vast sums of private information and both have the same idea of the way privacy in cyberspace is going — scary.
