Globe Pendant - Behind the sceenes

THE GLOBE PENDANT

Here is a few pictures of the making of the Globe Pendant. It is not a casted item. Unfortunately I should have taken more photos on the soldering mesh.

It took days to make, a lot of experience and an equipped workshop.

This was a commissioning and one of a kind. It is 22 mm in diameter and 925 silver - sterling silver.

Every component is sawn from a piece of flat sheet of sterling silver.
The globe is hollow, each continent soldered separately. The word axial tilt it accurately 23.5 degrees.

This Globe Pendant is of Sterling Silver, hollow, 11.9g (including ring-bail) and 22mm in diameter. It rotates on its rotational axis with the earth's axial tilt to a line perpendicular to its orbital plane around the sun.

Baby Spoon in Progress

Baby spoon/christening spoon

Each spoon is unique. I work from my own idea sketch. I would also make to a clients specification.

With this design I had the baby feeding spoon in mind.

On this photo the spoon is not completed. I have completed the hammer work. The next step is to smooth it with files and sand it to a very fine sheen. The final step is to raise a fine silver surface to prevent oxidation.

To the left is the same spoon during the forming process.

These spoons are totally handmade with a piece of silver, a hammer and an anvel. I normally start with a bar of silver 6 x 6 mm thick and an estimated length, depending on what I make.

I spend about 15 - 20 hours per spoon.

A silversmith creates hollowware (dishes, bowls, porringers, cups, vases, ewers, urns, etc.), flatware (forks, spoons, knives, etc.), and other articles for household use from gold and silver sheetmetal.

This pattern in chain making is a very old pattern and I have read somewhere that is found amongst articles of old graves dating as far back as 6000 years.

These angles are handmade. The wings and body are hand forged - in this case I had casted a limited number of the wings and bodies of different sizes in Sterling Silver. The beads are preferably stone or alternatively glass - in this case the heads are clear faceted rock crystals and the drop beads are glass. The wings are stamped with the content guarantee 925 and my 'rae' signature.

Ashanti Fertility Amulets

An Ashanti carving that may become something.

I am also working on an African theme for Ubuntu Project in Italy - Ashanti fertility figures, but with a difference. The tribal fertility amulets are traditionally female - but what about the men? Since the medical field have proved to the modern mind that it is not just the woman that has to be fertile to produce offspring, then the man should also be represented when it comes to fertility. Do you agree?

Candleholders aka Candelabra

This candelabra
(name and info sited on , read more...) or commonly known as candleholder was handmade in the 18th century.

This candle holder was completely handmade. It was in for restoration with one of my mentors during my apprenticeship.

If I had paid more attention, I would have remembered the date and silversmith and which town it was made... but all this can be looked up by referring to the stamps in the last photo.
