The great New York Post reports that the usual suspects are dead set against a postage stamp

Benny Hill not fit for stamp?

Britian’s postal service has rejected “Benny Hill” for a stamp because his girl-chasing ways are no longer politically correct.

Royal Mail, as the post office is called there, had been considering a stamp to honor the famously naughty British comic as part of group of stamps to mark the 40th anniversary of his network, ITV, according to a report yesterday in London’s Daily Telegraph.

But, according to the minutes of a committee making the decision, the PR arm of the Royal Mail raised an objection saying Hill’s antics were “in direct opposition to [the] company’s policies on harassment in the workplace.”

“Benny Hill” ran on British TV for 20 years — from 1969-89 — and was one of its first and most successful exports. For a generation of Americans in the 1970s, it was the first British TV show they ever saw.

The show was a half-hour sketch comedy, full of slapstick and scantily clad girls (”Frasier” star Jane Leeves was a “Benny Hill” girl for a short time) usually being spied on by the leering Hill.

Alfred Hill, the actor who played Benny, died in 1992.

I saw this video on YouTube making the rounds. New Mexico’s women’s soccer star Elizabeth Lambert -- young, athletic, photogenic, and a natural heel getting a little bit of notoriety online.

She’s a real-life heel. What a woman!

On the November 5, 2009 edition of TNA Impact, TNA owner and bigshot Dixie Carter decided to open the show with a video of a speech she gave in front of much of the TNA roster of wrestlers.  It was a strange presentation, as the clearly nervous Carter basically ordered them all to support her 100% and not dare question her leadership (even though her track record as head of TNA invites questioning).

Well that was weird.  Who wants everybody in TV Land to see your boss threatening to fire you unless you fall in line behind her questionable business moves, like signing TNA into some kind of ‘partnership’ with Hulk Hogan?

So I had some thoughts about this strange segment and emailed them to Bryan Alvarez, host of Wrestling Observer Radio, and he decided to read my email on the air and address my comments.  I’m glad to report that we are overwhelmingly on the same page.  Enjoy this brief segment from his show.

Well, at least most of the roster. I didn’t see Nash, Steiner, Sting, Foley, Angle, Tenay or Taz.

Did you guys get a weird vibe from that segment where she demands unwavering and unquestioning loyalty from the TNA wrestlers?

I laughed when she said if you are not prepared to give 100%, then you will be working somewhere else. I had heard that some wrestlers on her roster specifically WANT to leave TNA but can’t get releases from their contracts.

I’m thinking Dixie enjoys being on tv, which isn’t good. I also figure this is laying the groundwork for Dixie to play the heel owner/authority figure to confound Hulk Hogan when he finally shows up on tv more regularly. Unless it was real, in which case it just didn’t belong on tv.

In any event, it made TNA seem small time to me.

La-Z-Boy crash leads to DWI in Proctor

A Proctor man driving a motorized La-Z-Boy lounge chair hit a parked vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Dennis LeRoy Anderson, 62, pleaded guilty Monday in St. Louis County District Court to DWI in connection with the Aug. 31, 2008, incident in Proctor. There were no injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, Anderson drove his motorized chair into a vehicle parked near a Proctor bar. Anderson told police he was traveling from the Keyboard Lounge after consuming approximately eight or nine beers. His blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.29 percent, more than three times the legal limit to drive.

Anderson claimed he was driving the chair fine until a woman jumped on it and knocked the chair off course. He has one prior DWI conviction. He couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.

Proctor Deputy Police Chief Troy Foucault said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. It has a stereo, cup holders and other custom options, including different power levels.

A National Hot Rod Racing Association sticker is posted on the chair’s head rest. The chair had a small steering wheel, about a third of the size of a golf cart’s, coming straight up from the middle of the La-Z-Boy.

Proctor City Prosecutor Ronald Envall said he charged Anderson under the portion of Minnesota law that makes it a crime to operate a self-propelled motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. He declined further comment.

Anderson had to forfeit his motorized chair to Proctor police, who plan to auction it with other forfeited items, Foucault said.

Captain Lou Albano

RIP 1933-2009

LordsofPain.com just reported that WWE Hall of Famer Captain Lou Albano (Louis Vincent Albano) has passed away. He was 76 years old.

Captain Lou enjoyed a 40+ year career in the pro wrestling business as a wrestler and manager. He was a one-on-a-kind personality and a longtime favorite of wrestling fans.

The “manager of champions” guided 15 different tag teams and 4 singles competitors to championship gold. Fans may remember that his association with Cyndi Lauper helped usher in The Rock & Wrestling Connection, which helped mainstream pro wrestling and helped lead to the first Wrestlemania.

I’d like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Captain Lou Albano. He shall be missed.

As if liberal elite sycophants can’t make themselves appear more absurd, along comes CNN, performing a pointed fact check of a Saturday Night Live skit that spoofed President Obama.

You can’t make this up.

Today would have been the 107th birthday to one of the alltime great movie funnymen, Larry Fine (Louis Feinberg) of The Three Stooges.

Thanks for all the laughter, Larry! You shall live forever in the hearts of your fans!

Pledge victory in federal court

The Knights of Columbus scored an important victory in federal court in New Hampshire on Wednesday, September 30, when U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe upheld the constitutionality of the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Atheist Michael Newdow had filed the lawsuit against the school system in Hanover, New Hampshire on behalf of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, in a case that mirrored his earlier lawsuit against schools in and near Sacramento, California.

As with the California case, the Knights of Columbus sought and received permission from the court to become a “defendant intervenor,” allowing attorneys representing the Order (from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty) to participate directly in the court proceedings.

The California case, argued before a panel of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in December 2007, has still not been decided. Read the New Hampshire court decision.

Well, Barry went to bat for his hometown of Chicago and for the USA, so they might hope to host the 2016 Olympics.  Barry stuck his neck out, and he is the worse for wear for it.

CNN was all ready to report an Obama triumph, but the IOC had other plans.  After a passionate plea to the IOC, the votes were tallies and Chicago came in dead last, eliminated in the first round of selection.

The announcer is particularly funny, repeating “Chicago is Out?” Yes, Mr Newsman -- Chicago is out.  Period.

Honestly, i don’t know why Barry and friends should be so surprised.  President Obama has been running around for months telling people how the USA is rotten.  In that context, is it surprising that the IOC wouldn’t want a sucky nation like ths USA to host the Olympics?

Probably the only memorable thing about the 1967 film Dr Dolittle is this song, Talk To The Animals.  In the film, it’s performed by Rex Harrison with a slow placed, almost conversational delivery.  I prefer the faster paced renditions, like those performed by Sammy Davis Jr. and in this video, Vanda King.

The song is a personal favorite of mine and has been since childhood.  I find the lyrics quite clever and the melody infectious.  The only problem I have with the song is the same problem I have with the film -- both are way too long.  Dr Dolittle clocks in at almost three hours when the intermission is included -- a brutal exercise, punctuated by the fact that the film is primarily for children.  Expecting kids to sit there for 3 hours is just too much, I think.

For years, I have felt that the narrative should have been tweaked and Dr Dolittle should have been presented as two 90 minute films, released a year or so apart.  That’s much easier for children to digest, and a lot easier for the adults in the audience, too.

As it stands, the film was enormously expensive and, sadly, a commercial failure, and caused financial mayhem with 20th Century Fox, which continued to feel the pain until almost a decade later when they released Star Wars in May, 1977.  Dr Dolittle also marks the beginning of the end of major leading roles for Rex Harrison.  20th Century Fox also launched an all-out marketing blitz for the film, further compromising the bottom line.

In the end, Dr Dolittle has earned a warm spot in the hearts of many fans over the decades.  Perhaps its most enduring legacy is that it marked the end of this type of film: a musical children’s adventure that’s nonetheless good for fans of all ages.  These days, that niche is dominated by animated films featuring the voices of established stars, a genre that’s grown tedious and tiresome.  I’d like to see this type of film make a comeback -- I think if it were done well, it could be huge.

So, what courageous filmmaker has the guts to try it?

Nancy ‘Ma’ Pelosi is revealed to be an obnoxious fake once again.  Set the Wayback Machine to 2006…

Leave it to some wide-eyed liberal doctor -- who has been in general practice for four years -- to get up at one of Rep Shelia Jackson Lee’s Town Hall Meetings and lob a softball question!

The problem is that our friends at the Patterico’s Pontifications blog did a little digging, and found out that the self-described ‘general practitioner’ has no medical degree and no medical practice.

The Lone Star Times dug deeper and revealed that, while Roxana Mayer isn’t a doctor, she certainly is a Barack Obama campaign volunteer.  The Lone Star Times managed to get this confession out of Mayer:

Our own David Jennings secured a phone interview, in which Mayer admitted to impersonating a physician, saying — get this — she thought it would help her credibility. (It didn’t.)

Patterico’s Pontifications managed to get this screen capture from The Houston Chronicle’s report of the event, capturing the moment when Mayer and Rep Lee evidently find true love.

After some third-party fact checking and digging (it’s called journalism), The Houston Chronicle changed the caption and identified her as Roxana Mayer, sans “a pediatric primary care physician.”
