Singlelistas, I have to ask! Are you following your resolutions?

Are you going to the gym everyday?

Have you scheduled your trip to the Mediterranean?

Have you paid off that credit card debt that you’ve had since college?

I don’t know about you but I’m still paying on acrylic nails that I bought way back in 2001…

Oh, the shame!

I digress.

The reason that I’m checking on YOUR resolutions is because I really want this year to be all about YOU!

We declared that 2011 would be the Year of the Single Woman, but we never really talked about what that meant.

You’ve been heavy on my heart lately because I’ve been thinking about all of the phenomenal things that we, as single women, could be doing with this time of freedom and independence in our lives, yet I wonder how many of us actually use this time to really fulfill that.

I thought about this because not too long ago I had a Vision Party with a gaggle of my girlfriends, which if you haven’t been to or hosted one this year, I highly recommend that you do!

Anyway, as we were sipping sangrias, eating Asian-inspired tapas, and creating 2011 vision boards, complete with enough glitter to prompt the sequel to Mariah Carey’s cinematic catastrophe, I was really taken aback by the number of women who kept putting wedding-themed icons on their boards.

There were wedding rings, wedding dresses, wedding venues (castles of course!), and wedding favors literally spilling off of their pages, yet not a single one of them had a boyfriend, a strong suitor, or even a blind date on the horizon.

Now, I didn’t say anything then (and I imagine my phone will begin rigorously ringing as soon as this posts!) but I really thought for a moment that I had entered the bridal twilight zone.

Like, maybe it’s just me but how do you plan to be married this year, and you haven’t yet found a suitable mate?

*blank stare*

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m as much of a hopeless romantic as the next chick. I carry my glass slippers around in my purse and I allot extra vacay time in my Blackberry just in case Prince Charming comes riding along unannounced and whisks me away to his paradise in the sky.

But in looking at the boards as they were being designed and blinged, I couldn’t help but think what a waste of space it was to plan for something over which you have such very little control.

Call me old school, but I honestly believe that men decide when they are going to propose, and we decide whether we are going to accept.

Now I know there are some lovely ladies out there who proposed to their husbands and rode off happily into the sunset, but for the most part, that’s not really how it works- and it's certainly not the way most of us envisioned it as young girls- because yes, we’ve all been planning these weddings since we were four!

I may have actually began planning immediately after my birth, but that’s a totally different story!

My point is, that fairly or not, for most women it’s pretty much a waiting game.

We have to wait for a man who doesn’t repulse us to come along.

We have to wait until he decides that he can’t live without us another day (even though we’ve known that all along!)

We have to wait until he’s ready to purchase our 10-karat ring (yes, I said 10!).

We wait until he's willing to withstand the ridicule of “the fellas,” and we wait until he buys the proper knee guard equipment that will enable him to comfortably drop down in front of all of humanity, and whimsically declare his undying love.

Whew!

And as most of us have noticed, ummm…we just might be waiting a while, especially for those of us who are waiting on the right guy to come along.

Which brings me back to my vision boards.

I’ve been giving it a lot of thought and I’ve decided that the difference between being a "single woman" and a "singlelista" is all in how you wait.

Instead of filling our resolutions with goals that we may or may not be able to achieve, based on factors…ahem, men…beyond our control, what if we filled our visions with the other things in life that make us happy?

As modern women, we want it ALL-- The man, yes.

But also the houses, the cars, the clothes, the careers, the vacations in Venice, the summers on the Vineyard, the pup, the nonprofit, the Grammy, the Tony, the Oscar, the Golden Globe-it ALL!

Recognizing that, we should resolve to fill up our vision boards with things that remind us to be our best selves- to be stunning, kind, fashionable, charitable, brilliant, healthy, whole, spiritual, and happy!

I believe that if we redirect the energy we spend wallowing in love unfound, and invest it in ourselves, on an uncompromising journey to become better everyday, we can truly find the happiness which we all seek.

Singlelistas, I want 2011 to be all about YOU.

Do the things you’ve always wanted to do.

Redesign your wardrobe. Buy your house. Charter a plane. Travel the world. Parachute out of the sky. Open your business. Start a nonprofit. Run for political office. Buy yourself a diamond (OK, maybe not a 10-karat one, but you see where I'm going with this)!

LIVE FOR YOU!

And by the time you finish loving and investing in your phenomenal self, as luck would have it, I’d venture to bet that the love you’ve been searching for will be much closer than you imagined.

Stars attract stars.

So go ahead singlelistas, SHINE!

This year is all about YOU!

It's a new year which, according to your resolutions, means a new you!

In 2011, you've vowed to be effortlessly fabulous and while the perfect outfit is very important, your makeup simply cannot be ignored. After all, your face is the first thing people see and you deserve to look and feel gorgeous.

Now a word of caution before we move forward, when going for Hollywood worthy glam, many of us make the big mistake of over doing our makeup.

Always remember, less is more!

For example, if you plan on rocking a bright or sequin dress, you want to play down your makeup. If you’re opting to go simple—a classic little black dress for instance, then you can play up your makeup with bold colors and even a little glitter.

We at The Singles’ Salon have scoured the net for some of the latest celebrity makeup looks to inspire you to get in touch with your inner superstar this year!

Now because we believe in total beauty, on the inside and out, there are some very important, fundamental steps you must take to prep your skin before we'll even tell you how to glam out your makeup.

Begin by moisturizing your skin and conditioning your lips (find a facial moisturizer and a lip balm you love and use them religiously).

Evenly apply your foundation all over your face. Be sure to blend in any hard edges or lines.

Next, apply concealer to any blemishes or scars for ultimate coverage.

Next, lightly dust translucent powder over your entire face- emphasis on the lightly.

Finally, brush your brows with a spoolie and fill in any areas where needed with a shade appropriate eyebrow liner.

Now for the fun part!

Follow these easy instructions and be picture perfect and ready for your close up all 2011 long!

Kim Kardashian’s Infamous Smokey Eye

1. Line both the top and bottom lash lines with a black eye pencil.

2. Use a small eye shadow brush to soften the edges of the eye line.

3. Use a dark shadow with a smudge brush to go over the penciled area and smudge—this will also set the eye liner.

4. Apply a lighter shadow preferably in a neutral tone encircling the entire eye to soften—to give a perfect blended smokey eye.

5. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara on top and bottom lashes.

6. Apply a peach-toned colored blush to the apples of your cheeks and stroke the brush along your cheekbone towards your ear.

7. Apply a nude gloss to your lips.

Keri Hilson’s Sultry Lavender Eye

1. Apply an eye base primer.

2. Use a vibrant, satin lavender eye shadow color and apply from the lash line to your eye crease. Leave brow bone bare.

3. Use black eyeliner on your top lash line and your water line and take a smudge brush with some of the purple/lavender eye shadow to smudge underneath your lash line.

4. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara on the bottom and top lashes.

5. Apply a shimmer peach or pink colored blush to the apples of your cheeks and stroke the blush brush along your cheekbone towards your ear.

6. Color your lips with a nude or light brown gloss.

Christina Aguilera’s Classic Red Lip

1. Apply an eye base primer.

2. Use a light brown matte eye shadow and brush the color over your eyelids.

3. Use black eyeliner on your top lash line only! Use white eye liner for your water line.

4. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara to the top. Apply a strip of false lashes and reapply mascara only to the top lashes to blend in the false lashes with your real lashes.

5. Apply a very faint pink blush to the apples of your cheeks and stroke the brush along your cheekbone towards your ear.

6. Line your lips with a red lip liner and fill in with a rich red lipstick. Add gloss.

Eva Mendes’s Fierce Cat Eye

1. Line your top lash line with a black liner and wing out the corners of your eye to give yourself the cat wing.

2. Use the same black eyeliner to gently line your lash line.

3. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara on the top and bottom.

4. Apply a pink blush to the apples of your cheeks and stroke the blush brush along your cheekbone towards your ear.

5. Apply a soft peach lipstick to your lips.

Rihanna’s Lashes and Wine Stained Lips

1. Apply an eye base primer.

2. Pick a natural color eye shadow and apply it from your lash line to right above your crease.

3. Line both your top and lower lash lines with a black eye liner.

4. Curl your lashes and apply black mascara, then apply a strip of false lashes from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner of the eye. Reapply mascara to blend the false lashes with your natural lashes.

5. Apply a pink colored blush to the apples of your cheeks and stroke the blush brush along your cheekbone towards your ear.

6. Line your lips with a wine colored lip pencil, then fill in the lip with the same lip pencil to stain the lips, next use a deep red matte lipstick to go over the lips.

Well, there you are singlelistas! Superstar glamour for a superstar you!

Now, the only thing left for you to do is pose for the camera.

What Chilli REALLY Wants: The Interview

She may be cute and petite, but R&B legend Chilli has a giant’s worth of wisdom-- especially when it comes to love and relationships.

With renewed popularity from her hit reality show, What Chilli Wants, the self-described tomboy who once told us she “could have any man that [she] want[s] to, time or place that [she] choose[es] to” is proving that while that may be true, not just any man can have her.

The five-foot starlet is patently clear about what she doesn’t want in a man, and after sharing her now infamous “list” with the world, many skeptics believe that Chilli’s "Mr. Right" may not even exist.

So what exactly does the notoriously single singer really want?

The answer might surprise you.

Chilli, born Rozanda Thomas, learned an important lesson about relationships at a very early age. “I saw my mom in a marriage that didn’t work,” she says “and I learned that when it’s not right, it’s not right.” Her mother, whom she describes as a very strong woman, ultimately left that marriage, teaching her daughter a lesson that would forever remain with her— the importance of not settling.

“I could be alone until I’m 50 years old and that’s fine with me because I’m alone, but not lonely,” she says with a smile that sparkles almost as brightly as the Chanel diamond earrings that offset her casually upswept bun.

“So many people who are telling me ‘Oh, you need to be in a relationship,’ are so unhappy, she says emphatically. “All you have to do is look around; so many people are so unhappy in relationships. Why would I want that? Who is that for?” she pauses, “I was going to say that’s for the birds, but I don’t even wish that on the birds. Why would anybody want to be an unhealthy, unsatisfying relationship?

Beautiful, witty, and incredibly down to earth, Chilli is much more big sister than pop diva as she extols about her hard-learned lessons on the importance of loving yourself first.

“I know what it feels like to be extremely unhappy in a relationship, to lose who you are, as a person. In your twenties you’re learning about yourself and you may be afraid to just be who you are you for fear that somebody may not like it. [In your twenties] you care more about what other people think of you and you get into relationships you have no business getting into,” she recalls. “I know what that feels like, and in knowing that I will never put myself in that situation again.”

Now with almost 40 years of life and love under her belt (although she gives most 20-somethings a hard run in face and physique), it is clear that Chilli’s lessons in self love have been greatly influenced by many other dynamic women in her life.

Her “Big Momma” once warned her against being an “old fool”- a person who goes through a particular experience, but never learns anything. Chilli heeded that word of caution and applied it to her love life, as much as she did to every other aspect of becoming a whole and happy woman.

“I never want to be the old fool, and old doesn’t have a number on it. It’s less about age and more about the experiences that you’ve had. It’s something that’s familiar to you but if you’re not learning from that ill feeling, or even that great feeling of it, then that’s stupid on you. I constantly keep that in mind. I understand who I am as a woman. I embrace everything about myself and about my character. I know how God built me as a woman, and because of that I could never settle for the wrong relationship with the wrong man.”

Chilli talks with founding editor Kelly Smith Beaty about how she's able to be "alone, but not lonely."

Chilli dishes love advice "big sister" style. In my mind, we're now BFFs and are going shopping together on Saturday!

With publicist Christal Jordan Mimms of Enchantd PR, Chilli beams recalling how she came to find happiness within herself, and how now appreciating her worth will keep her from ever settling in the wrong relationship again.

With an infectious smile, radiating self-confidence, a son whose name alone makes her eyes dance, indisputable success, fortune, fame, and fierce designer shades, it’d be hard to argue that Chilli doesn’t already have it all. But she’s quick to point out that her professional success has nothing to do with her ability to hold out for the right man. When asked about the secret to her self-happiness, she immediately responds, “Security.”

Convinced that it’s our own insecurities that cause women to pick a man just for the sake of having a man, or to try to make relationships work that we know we aren’t fulfilled in, Chilli likens women holding on to "Mr. Right Now" to infants holding on to pacifiers. “At some point, we’ve got to learn to put the pacifier down. I don’t care if you burn it, hide it, or throw it away. Do whatever you have to do to stop depending on that pacifier!,” she laughs.

And to make sure that her message does not get confused, she clarifies “It’s OK to desire a relationship. God designed us that way. But it’s the way that we go about it that we have to be mindful of. Don’t just go out there and pick a guy to have a guy. Don’t just go get someone to fill that void in your life. No one can fill that void for you until you fill it for yourself.”

So if Chilli knows all the answers and has already uncovered the secret to love and happiness, then why did she take to a nationally televised show to find a suitable mate?

“I have the show so people can see that we’re all the same. I’ve heard many women say things like, ‘Well if Chilli can’t find a man, what does that mean for me?’ It doesn’t matter what my job is or how many more people know me than the next female, we all generally have the same issues,” she says.

But not everybody gets the well-intentioned “sharing is caring” motivation behind her show. Since it originally aired in Season 1, Chilli has received a lot of criticism for being too picky, with a surprisingly great deal of the backlash coming from other women.

“For women who tell me that I’m too picky, I look at them like, ‘Baby, do you know your worth? Do you know how beautiful you are- inside and out? Do you know all the gifts that God has instilled in you?’ I honestly believe that if all women would truly learn and know and embrace all of that about themselves, then they would all be the same way too.”

It is that message, the power of owning your own self-worth, that Chilli wants to share with every woman.

“In my nightly prayer, it’s always ‘God keep my heart pure and use me all the time.’ I’m sharing my successes and my struggles in hopes that it can change somebody’s life for the better and uplift them,” she explains. “It’s a work in progress but I’m clear. I’ve been good [about recognizing my own self-worth and fully loving myself] for a few years now. I just want other people to get there- truly loving who you are-because when we get there, it’s an amazing feeling, an overwhelming feeling!”

So, again we ask, what is it that Chilli REALLY wants?

She wants each of you, to fully love, accept, and celebrate YOU!

She wants you to be your own source of happiness and fulfillment!

She wants you to put down the pacifiers and never again settle for less than you deserve!

Here are three bonus tips for keeping your life Scrubs free!

1- Become your own best friend.
Learn to enjoy spending time with yourself. Go to a movie by yourself. Take yourself out to dinner. Afford yourself a chance to think a little more and not have to rely on another body being there. Once you know how to take care of you, it will be easier to recognize whether others have the ability to give you the same.

2- Learn Your Love Languages
There are many relationship books out there claiming to teach you how to think, how to act, and how to catch a man. One of Chilli’s favorite books on love, is The 5 Love Languages. This book doesn’t try to tell you how to be different, but rather how to get in touch with your authentic self. The 5 Love Languages will reveal how you personally interpret love, which will better help you find a mate who speaks your language!

3- Know When to Go
If you find yourself saying, “I really like him, BUT…” it’s time to stop the clock on a dead-end relationship. Whatever follows the conjunction “but” in that statement is what you are really looking for, and judging by your statement, he’s not it. It’s not his fault that he’s not the man of your dreams, because he is perfect for someone, just not you. Leave while you are still in like, because although it may hurt a little in the beginning, it will pale in comparison to the pain you’ll face a lifetime later when you’re finally ready to accept that he’s STILL not the man for you.

Happy New Year Singlelistas!

I hope you all brought in 2011 with grand style.

We told you last year that 2011 would be the Year of the Single Woman, why else would it begin with 1-1-11?!?

If you're rolling solo then this is sure to be your year, so if you didn't toast to yourself when the clock struck midnight, then I think now is a great time to raise a glass in honor of your fearless, flawless self!

This year The Singles' Salon resolves to continue to give you the news you need to live life freely and happily.

Last year (i.e. last week. Lol! I love that!) we told you that we were working on a really cool article for you. Now you know that we don't normally post on Sundays here, but tonight is a big night for single women everywhere so we had to make an exception.

Now you should know that I absolutely LIVE for this show, because unlike other dating shows out there, this isn't about Ms. Chilli's search for a man. Instead it chronicles her commitment to dating and waiting until she finds THE man.

This singlelista may not be too proud to beg, but she certainly is too fly to settle, and that's why we love her so!

The Singles' Salon had the privilege of attending the sneak peak party of What Chilli Wants, and one thing we can tell you is that Chilli is dishing out lots of eye candy for all of us single girls at home.

Now, while most of the cuties won't measure up to her standards, they are just right for spending your Sunday nights at home on boy watch- after all, what better way is there to kick off the start of a brand new week?

A: "I think every woman should have a list. I'm not asking for anything that I'm not bringing to the table."

Q: What have you learned about yourself (as it relates to dating) since the first season of "What Chilli Wants"?

A: "I learned that I was right. You should have standards. You should always know what you want."

Every Single Penny: Post Holiday Savings

Sooo... about those 12 days of Christmas...yeah... That didn't really happen the way I envisioned it.

I know you’ve seen the commercials – virtually every retailer is having a sale. I’ve found that most items are 30% to 50% off of their original price. If you spent, on average, $2,000 each year during the holiday season this strategy could save you up to $1,000. This includes gifts, greeting cards, wrapping paper, Christmas lights, etc.

2. If you’re thinking of getting a gym membership – don’t procrastinate, join this week.
After all, singlelistas need to stay in shape somehow, right?!

I’ve joined a few gyms in my day and have found that most will waive the initial set-up fees and offer major discounts on your monthly membership fee during this time of the year. Deal or no deal - make sure you read the fine print and are aware of any contracts or early termination fees. Another thing to consider when buying a gym membership is location, location, location. In order to take full advantage of your membership, be sure to find a gym that is near your job, home or a place you frequent often.

3. Lastly, go on vacation after the New Year.
As a jet-setting singlelista, you know that fab U.S. hot spots like Las Vegas, New York, and Miami typically have an increase in airfare and hotel rates around New Year’s Eve. If you can wait until the weekend after New Year’s you will see a 25-50% decrease in rates, not to mention more options.

OK, so granted, I'm a little late and am therefore off by one day, but if it makes you feel any better I was out scoring an exclusive interview with an R&B Singlelista Sensation, that you all are going to DIE FOR!

Now everybody knows that I'm a BIG fan of holiday cheer! And by cheer, I mean spirits! And by spirits, I mean something served in a sugar rimmed martini glass! But during the holidays I have another bev of choice, one that's reminiscent of my childhood days and reflective of an innocence now lost.

Ok..moment over!

#12 Haute Chocolate

Yes, my loves during the Christmas season, I'm all about the cocoa and so item #12 on our list is a Haute Chocolate Bar!

Here's how it works:

Begin with your favorite base of chocolate. You can keep it classic by choosing a popular pre-packaged brand, such as Swiss Miss or Nestle, or you can opt for something a little more indulgent and begin with pure chocolate pieces from Godiva or Ghirardelli. It's one million percent up to you!

Next, set out as many types of fun chocolate toppings and mix-ins as your little childhood heart can dream of (what, you thought mixers were only for adult bevs? Please!). Think marshmellows, candy canes, toffee crumbles, fruit zests, ice cream, liquors, and more. Your imagination is the limit!

Then, set out all of the cutesy coffee mugs you can find (bonus points for mugs that are over sized, or decorated in festive holiday themes or sassy girly-girl phrases!).

Finally, invite all of your girlfriends in out of the cold for an evening of haute cocoa and girl talk--- singlelista style!

Now, I don't want to tell you how to do your cocoa, but I have a few chic suggestions for Haute Chocolate offerings that might help heat up your girls night!

Peppermint White Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

8 oz white chocolate, chopped

3 1/2 cups milk

6 hard peppermint candies, crushed fine

1/2 tsp peppermint extract

2/3 cup whipping cream

Preparation:

Beat chilled cream with crushed mints until stiff peaks form. Refrigerate for about an hour. Meanwhile, heat milk to a simmer, them mix in chocolate. Whisk until chocolate is melted and smooth. Add mint extract and stir through. Pour into mugs and top with minty whipped cream.

Grand Marnier Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

1 cup half n' half

2 cups milk

1/2 cup orange juice

6 oz bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped

1/3 cup Grand Marnier

Preparation:

Heat half and half, milk, and orange juice until just boiling. In a mixing bowl, add about 2/3 cup of hot milk to the chocolate and whip smooth. Add the rest of the milk and whisk again. Simmer for around 2 minutes to reheat through. Add Grand Marnier and serve.

Spiced Hot Chocolate

Ingredients:

4 tablespoons cocoa powder, unsweetened

1/3 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

dash salt

1/2 cup hot water

3 1/2 cups milk

1 teaspoon vanilla

4 cinnamon sticks

Preparation:

In a medium saucepan, combine cocoa, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir in the water. Bring mixture to a boil over medium heat. Boil, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes. Gradually stir in milk and continue to heat until heated through, stirring frequently. Do not boil. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Serve in mugs with cinnamon sticks. Makes 4 servings.

Hot Chocolate Float

Ingredients:

2 envelopes hot cocoa mix

2 cups warm water

2 scoops vanilla ice cream

Preparation:

Make hot chocolate as you normally would. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Serve in a mug with a chocolate dipped spoon for extra flair.

Single Celebs We Love: Taylor Swift

At only a few days short of her 21st birthday, Taylor Swift seems to have life all figured out!

The chart topping pop star has made a lasting name for herself since her life changed drastically only a few years ago.

Taylor began singing karaoke at festivals and fairs but it was during a traffic-stopping performance at a local shopping mall, when Swift caught the eye (and ear!) of a talent manager. A few contracts and record deals later, Taylor has become a bona fide superstar!

The New York Times describes Swift as “one of pop’s finest songwriters, country’s foremost pragmatist and more in touch with her inner life than most adults.”

In an attempt to let fans in on the makings of her soul stirring croons, Taylor explains that “sometimes when things impact you so intensely, it takes writing a song to get over them.” (People Magazine)

A gifted storyteller, and an obvious rebel of the rule “Don’t kiss and tell," Taylor is well known for writing songs about her exes, present loves and crushes. (Industry insiders are all abuzz speculating that the track "Dear John" from her latest album is an open letter to ex-fling John Mayer!)

Talented, beautiful, and wildly successful, Ms. Swift seems to have it all. But don’t look for her to add "married" to that list anytime soon.

And how could she not be when she is dominating the country music scene and brokering major business deals?

The last artist to achieve this remarkable feat was Lil’ Wayne with Tha Carter III – back in 2008.

While indisputably, a stand out in her class, this singlelista is certainly not alone.

Rumor has it that Ms. Swift is seeing a certain Jake Gyllenhaal (Did you see him in “Love and Other Drugs??!!!” I’m beyond jealous!!!!) but I think she hits the nail on the head when she explains her philosophy on love.

“I don't think that love can possibly be easy all the time, in fact, most of the time it's going to be hard. We at The Singles’ Salon know first hand that the holidays can be a difficult time for some singlelistas. So for any of you experiencing the singlelista blues, we thought now would be a great time for another installment of "Notes from Down the Aisle"- a preview of the other side of “I DO!”

Our mystery matronista is back with more exclusive insights from wifedom. Pay attention ladies, you just might discover that being married isn’t all mistletoe after all!

'We' instead of 'Me': Holiday Edition

Ahhhh, the holidays! There’s no better time of year.

You have vacation time and oh so many options. What will you do? Will you read that long anticipated book by the fire? Will you organize your closets? Maybe you’ll catch up with family and friends that you haven’t seen in a while. Maybe you’ll sit at your mother’s house and eat yourself into a comatose state. Maybe you’ll catch up on your favorite reality shows or movies that you haven’t seen on your TiVo or DVR. Maybe you will just take a fabulous trip to Europe.

Singlelistas, the options are limitless!

However, once you say “I Do”, your holiday plans are no longer entirely your own. If you thought you had too much to do during the holidays as a single woman; once you add the hubby, you can multiply your list by two (not including gifts).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful feeling to be a part of a dynamic duo. However, truthfully speaking, when I first found out that I had to cancel my long awaited holiday spa visit complete with a peppermint facial scrub and gingerbread foot salts for one of his Christmas gatherings, my initial feeling was one of resentment.

I had so many questions.

When did he find out about the event anyway?

Whose function is it?

How does he even know these people?

Does he HAVE to go?

Hell, do I HAVE to go?

When it came down to it, none of the answers to these questions even mattered. What mattered is that these events were important to him and he wanted his wife to be there. PERIOD.

Well, either I could have continued to be resentful or I could choose to be happy about spending that special time of year with the man that I love. I chose to take the positive route, and had to take the following steps to come to terms with relinquishing some of my holiday time:

1. Be considerate. I know it’s difficult, but try to place yourself in your significant other’s shoes. I like to show up fashionably late with my husband on my arm at my events. So why should I feel that my husband feels any differently about being with me at his events?

2. Have an honest conversation with your significant other about their expectations for the holidays. Through trial and error, I’ve learned to start the holiday season by asking my husband what he plans to do for the season. This includes what events he wants to attend, what events he wants to host, what friends and family he wants to see, how much he plans to spend, what events we can go to solo, etc. From there, I give input about my plans. Then we compromise if there are any conflicts. (Trick: Unless your mate is more social than you, ask him what he plans to do first- 9 out of 10 times, he has 3 things compared to your 10. My hubby tends not to put up as much of a fuss if he thinks that his events got first preference.)

3. Communicate your intentions to your family and friends. Prior to me meeting my husband, my family was a neat little foursome and we spent all of our holidays cooking, eating, talking, watching movies, and just enjoying each other’s company. The first holiday that my husband and I were together, we spent half of the day with his family and the other half with mine. I felt so guilty because I felt that I destroyed our neat little foursome, by having a husband. It just wasn’t the same anymore. Weeks prior to the holiday, I sat down with my family and talked about my holiday plans so that we could devise a way to make it through the holiday without anyone feeling neglected. I also try to let my friends know if I have any conflicts early on, so that I can schedule other times to see them one-on-one if possible.

4. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare. You may attend several events in the same day, so be sure to dress to accommodate all of the events and do your shopping or preparing of dishes early. You keep a better attitude if you don’t allow the events to be overwhelming.

5. Make the best out of the situation. Happiness is a choice. You may not think you have much in common with your mate’s friends, family, and/ or co-workers, but you’re a renaissance woman. Your expansive knowledge allows you to relate to anyone from a CEO of a Fortune 500 company to a five-year-old child. If you just can’t bring yourself to enjoy the food, the surroundings, or the music after a while, and then go to number 6.

6. Tag out. You and your significant other need to have a sign or code word for when either of you have had enough. If his family or co-workers get on his nerves after a while, it’s likely that they’ll get on yours much faster. Both of you have to agree that after the code is given that you are leaving- and soon.

7. Make time to do something that you want to do for yourself. The great thing about following tips 1-6, is that after all is said and done you can do what you want with your time. Sneak away on a Sunday after church (while he’s watching football) and get a holiday flavored drink at a local coffee shop and read your favorite book or magazine.

Being a matronista can be a fabulous thing! However, going from “me” to “we” during the holidays can be a trying process.

So for you all of you “MEs” out there, enjoy the freedom of the season, and have yourself a holly jolly holiday!

Movin' On Mondays: Bye bye, Butterfly!

When I was a young girl, my mom used to read me a story about a very hungry caterpillar and all the transformations he went through before fully developing into a butterfly. I never really remembered the name of the story, or the author of the book, (Thank God for Google, right?!) but the lesson about life changes and life stages is one that stayed with me forever.

So now surely you're thinking "What does this have to do with me being single and fabulous?"

The short answer is absolutely nothing.

In fact, unlike all of the others, today's blog post has nothing to do with YOU at all.

As we all know by now Movin' On Mondays is dedicated to helping some of our newly single sisters transition smoothly into singledom-- out of Heartbreak Hotel and into self-love bliss. It occurred to me today that sometimes the biggest hurdle we face in moving past painful break-ups is learning not to overanalyze ourselves over the course of hours, days, months, years, and sometimes lifetimes trying to figure out what WE did wrong.

Now yes, sometimes we can be too much, too fab, too amazing, and too perfect for our partners to handle, but I think it's also important to understand that sometimes break-ups aren't about US at all.

Nobody likes to hear, "Baby, it's not you, it's me." And hell, at this point none of us would hardly believe it anyway, but sometimes believe it or not, it's true.

The men in our lives, much like the hungry little caterpillar, go through transitions into manhood, even if they are full grown, 55-year old, 401-K having, AARP card-carrying caterpillars.

For humans, transitions not only come with age and developmental stages, but also life experiences and change. I think that sometimes we forget that men go through changes too.

Much like us, men also experience things that take them out of their comfort zones and cause them to reevaluate their own sense of self. During these times they often retreat into their cacoons, and put up barriers from the world while they sort through their thoughts and- *GASP!* feelings!!- in a place that's private and personal, for only their eyes to see.

Over the years, I've learned that men don't handle change as easily as women- I mean, we're forced to change every 21 days whether we like it or not- I think in this way we ladies are much more resilient. We've learned to hope for the best but expect the worse, and picking our broken hearts up off the floor, for many of us, has become as natural as falling and getting back up is to a small child learning to walk.

Men are strong, but in a different way. When they fall, it seems that it takes them a little bit longer to get back up.

So why am I telling you fabs all of this?

Because I want you to know that sometimes when your romantic dreams aren't realized, it has nothing to do with you.

I want you to stop beating yourselves up and picking yourselves apart. You are wholly and perfectly made, and just like I'm sure you already told your BFF, "No girl, he won't find another woman as good as you!" :)

But what he might be looking for, at this particular time is himself.

For today's Movin' On Monday, I want to encourage each of you to let go of the anger and the bitterness and the disappointment of love unfulfilled. Perhaps he really didn't mean to hurt you. He may have truly never meant to make you cry.

All men aren't dogs, divas; some are just caterpillars.

Go on. Live your life. Keep loving and celebrating you!

And if you're lucky, and if it's truly meant to be then, maybe, just maybe, your man will come back to you one day, this time as a fully grown butterfly!

Single Women Make More Money

Dear World:

WE TOLD YOU that being single has its benefits, and this USA Today article just proved it.

According to a study released this week by New York based research firm Reach Advisors, unmarried women between the ages of 22 and 30, who do not have children, earn a median $27,000 a year, 8% more than comparable men in the top 366 metropolitan areas.

In 39 of the 50 cities studied, childless singlelistas out earned their male counterparts and matched the mens' salaries in another 8 cities.

To what can our breadwinner statuses be attributed?

We're smarter!

Yep! According to the survey, "Nearly three-quarters of girls who graduate from high school head to college, vs. two-thirds of the boys." It continues, "Women are now 1.5 times more likely than men to graduate from college or earn advanced degrees."

"Armed with degrees, young women command higher salaries."

Period.

So the next time you're on a date and your suitor asks whether or not you can cook, flip the question and ask whether or not he can cook. Statistically speaking, there's a good chance you'll be too busy earning the bacon to fry it!

A Single Splurge: You GUILTY Girl, You!

OMG! What a week it's been!

I mean, let's be honest. If you're like most of the world, you don't subject yourself to all of that occupational torture because you feel like it. You do it because you have bills to pay, and if you spend like I spend, then you've got BIG bills to pay.

Going to work affords you the luxury of earning an income that you can then have the privilege of handing over to someone else.

Working women of the world, how did we become so lucky?!?

The scent grew stronger, more inviting.

I sniffed.

I knew instantly that what they meant to write was

"The New Fragrance For Me."

Being the tech savvy singlelista that I am, I diverted my attention immediately (albeit briefly) from my Vogue to my laptop and got my Google on.

I discovered that GUILTY is the new fall fragrance by Gucci, which launched at the top of this month (thanks September!) and is comprised of notes of mandarin, pink pepper, peach, lilac, geranium, amber and patchouli.

*Bliss*

Now, we've discussed the pleasantries of pink pepper before, but never quite like this.

The website also stated that Guilty was "designed for the glamorous, daring, brave, and very sexy girls who like to party and enjoy themselves."

Sounds like it was made for singlelistas to me!

Then I saw this hard core trailer for the new fragrance and I thought, "Absolutely Yes!"

Now, I'll have to be honest with you, I considered not sharing the news of my new sinful pleasure because...well, I just wasn't that thrilled about having all you divas strutting around smelling like me. But after purchasing my own bottle and basking in all its delectable fabness, I realized that this really was too amazing not to share.

Ohh...the sacrifices I make for you loves! Sigh...

At $75 for the 1.7 oz and $95 for the 2.5 oz, it may be a bit of a splurge, but you're absolutely worth it!

So singlelistas, for all that you do for everybody else, I demand that today you do something for yourself that will leave you with not one single regret.

Single Celebs We Love: Mashonda

Yep, singlelistas! You read that right.

Mashonda is this week's Single Celeb We Love.

Right about now I imagine that some of you are thinking WTH?! as in What the hell?!? while others of you are likely thinking WTH?! as in Who the hell?!

Well, keep on reading sistas!

When super singer Alicia Keys said "I Do" to super producer Swizz Beatz, the entertainment media couldn't wait to exalt their union of love and happiness.

Somewhere in the quiet however, Mashonda was saying "I Don't" believe that this is happening!

For those of you who do not know, Mashonda was Swizz Beatz's wife when he and the then Ms. Keys became friends, lovers, expecting parents, and finally fiancees.

Aww... Happier days. I bet she'd like to get her hands that close to his neck again now!

We've heard several sides of the story, some that claim that Swizz and Mashonda had been separated before he and Alicia became playmates, others that claim that Mashonda thought she was happily married until she begin finding "evidence" that suggested otherwise.

We don't know which side of the story is true, so we'll reserve judgement, at least publicly, for now. We do know that there are hundreds of thousands of now singlelistas, who were once in an (un)perfect union until the "other" woman came prancing along.

Our commentary is reserved since we don't have all the facts, so we'll let you caption this one.

So today, in honor of all of those who have had their loves stolen from underneath them but still found the strength, the grace, and the dignity to get back up, we at the Salon dedicate this week's Single Celebs We Love post to you!

Mashonda joins our elite rank of fab singlelistas for the sheer fact that no houses were burned nor ex-husbands harmed during the course of this heart wrenching debacle.

Rather than acting out the lyrics to Carrie Underwoods' smash song (pun intended) "Before He Cheats," Mashonda carried herself like a lady and maintained her self respect all along.

Barring the ocassional, tell all interviews (which hardly registers on our pay-back-ometer), Mashonda never acted out in any way that could be potentially damaging to her or her children in the long run.

*cue applause*

Even after the new pair announced their engagement and pregnancy only days after his divorced was finalized with Mashonda, no car windows were smashed and no clothing was set on fire.

And in the biggest "can't we all just get along" move of the decade, Mashonda actually met with Alicia to discuss how the two families can co-exist so that the children can all know one another.

Part 1 of the Swizz family. These two darlings will be meeting their new little sibling very soon. (Ok, the kids are not this little anymore either. But this pic is just so adorable, I couldn't resist!)

*pull curtain. standing ovation*

We have to say that we're very proud of Mashonda for handling this so well. (I don't even know if I'd be that well-adjusted that quickly!)

The R&B crooner is reportedly looking onward and upwards, and is said to already be seeing a new beau. Excuse the flawed grammar, but we ain't mad Mashonda!

We also think that now might be a good time to get her back in the studio. I'm sure there are some amazing singlelista anthems in her just dying to come out!

Here's to the all the women out there who exhibit grace under fire.

Movin' On Mondays: Lessons from the Woods

We're baaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!!

We totally missed you!

And speaking of back, I know you know by now, that Elin Nordegren officially got the green light to run and never look back on her embarrassingly unfaithful ex-husband, Tiger Woods.

I have to admit, that it really hurt my heart to watch that whole horror unfold. I mean, even with a divorce settlement that could re-stimulate half of the American economy by itself, I never feel good about seeing a family fall apart, particularly in such a highly publicized, how-is-it-even-possible-to-have-that-many-mistresses kind of way.

Now with the period finally imprinted at the end of that great tragedy, here are a few lessons I think we singlelistas can learn from the Woods:

1. Never trust a man named after an animal.

So, here's the thing, tigers are predatory. They live in the jungle and they are hunters by nature. Mr. Woods told her exactly who he was from the moment he said, "Hi. My name is_____." We've all been taught not to judge a book by its cover, but you should absolutely judge a man by his name. In a broader, and slightly more serious sense, we as women have to learn to stop looking past the warning signs of potential dating disasters.

So often, the men who wind up causing the most drama in our lives come with some sort of warning label that we choose to ignore. Perhaps it's not always as obvious as an I.D. card that reads "Killer" but the signs are usually there.

Our hearts cannot afford for our eyes to close themselves to the tell-tell signs that he might not be the one. Take in ALL the information, signals, and cues your suitor is giving you, before you leap into "I Do." This holds especially true should you ever come across a man who introduces himself as Lion, Bear, Hawk, Pit Bull, Snake, Shark, or Killer Whale.

2. It's perfectly OK to kick his a#@.

Jaws dropped, we all watched the news story that reported Elin had all but clubbed Tiger to death. The story I kept waiting for, but never saw, was the one where she had been charged with domestic abuse, assault and battery, or attempted murder. Nope, it never happened. So ladies, what you now have is legal precedent that an occasional a#@ kicking is nonpunishable by the law, when so obviously deserved.

Now, here at The Singles' Salon, we don't condone or encourage domestic abuse of any form and have no interest in watching any of our beloved singlelistas on an upcoming episode of Snapped. That said, we do condone, admonish, and encourage all women to kick a cheating flame's unfaithful a#@...to the curb! Love should make you smile way more than it makes you cry, and it should never, ever humiliate you.

You're a fab, fly, superwoman, and when you find that you can do bad all by yourself, then by all means, be by yourself. Besides, we'll always love you!

3. Being single has its benefits.

In Elin's case, said benefits amounted to a staggering settlement of 750 million dollars!

Right! It doesn't matter how many times you read, hear, or say that, it never loses it shock factor!

It pays to do the right thing, and that's exactly what Elin did. I know that there are those who truly believe in "til death do us part," but I don't think that applies when your sweetie's reckless actions are going to lead to your untimely death. That doesn't just go for sex crazed men. It also applies to those who hit women, or even those who just too often make us cry. Your physical, mental, and emotional health are paramount. Don't ever put that on the line for anyone.

It may seem difficult to walk away from a toxic relationship, but living in your own self-imposed misery for a lifetime will be far worse. Love you. Live for you. And don't waste your time with anyone else that can't love and live for you too.

Even if you don't get a $750 million payout, you'll absolutely gain your peace of mind-- and that, my loves, is priceless!

1 oz amaretto almond liqueur

No, I'm not really asking you, because well, how would you know?!? Instead I'm giving you a hint about the lucky girl that's fab enough to be named this week's Single Celeb We Love.

If you guessed the ultra-hip host of the Style Network's "How Do I Look?" then you're 10000000% correct!

Jeannie Mai is her name and style is her game (and we must admit, she plays it VERY well!)

We don't know a whole lot about this TV newcomer, but we definitely believe she's one to watch!

The Vietnamese-Chinese-American fashionista actually began her career as a make-up artist with MAC cosmetics and has managed to successfully move from behind the camera, to front and center as a successful TV personality herself.

Her sass, wit, and impeccable sense of style keeps us glued to our sets every Saturday night at 8PM EST.

We also love that through her show, Jeannie has the opportunity to transform women's looks and lives on a weekly basis, and she does it masterfully, if we may say so ourselves.

Ms. Mai's TV career has brought her into our homes via the Today show, TLC's Miss America: Reality Check, MTV's Granted, and as a host on several special features on the E!, USA, and Lifetime networks.

We weren't able to dig up a lot of dirt on the starlet's love life, but we did find an older interview where she admitted to being "single, but not available." Does that mean there's a boyfriend lurking around somewhere? Hey Ms. Mai, inquiring minds want to know!

Well whatever the case, her style, charm, and wit, coupled with her Midas touch for turning potential-rich caterpillars, into bombshell butterflies has absolutely earned her a spot among our highly-coveted list of Single Celebs We Love!

Dear SS:
I haven’t been on a date in a minute and while I don’t really mind given my hectic schedule and recent lackluster encounters, I was in the mood to get dolled up and head out for a night on the town with a cute guy...no strings, pretense or drama attached.

I’m a proud Singlelista but I’m woman enough to admit that I sometimes need the companionship of the opposite sex – the type of up close and personal attention you get when you’re on a semi-date with a cool guy you know who shares your interests but not your bed.

You may or may not have dated but still keep in touch and hang out from time to time when you’re not seeing someone else. He probably still likes you so he’ll gladly play boyfriend-girlfriend for the night so you can get your man-fix (don’t judge me…you know you’ve done it before).

Coincidentally, my friend (and former flame) "Kevin" called and suggested we get together for dinner and a movie this weekend. Kevin is one of the most honest, hard -working people I know so I wasn’t shocked or even pissed when he got caught up at the office and postponed our plans.

Since I clearly wasn’t going to have a fabulous Singlelistas Night Out, I was determined to enjoy a phenomenal Singlelistas Night In. That’s right….One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show [a reference to your previous post---my personal fave]!

I changed into my favorite PJs, poured myself a glass of Moscato and dived right into a new book at the top of my reading list, “On Being a Bachelor: Thoughts on Dating, Mating and Relating,” by one very fabulous Singlelista at heart, Blane Bachelor (yes, Bachelor is her real last name).

I love to read but only a handful of relationship books have ever held my attention like this one.

Seriously, the book had me alternately sighing and laughing hysterically the ENTIRE NIGHT!!!!! Ms. Bachelor managed to strike the perfect balance between providing side-splitting, dead-on observations about the dating scene and offering words of wisdom and encouragement. It’s hard to pick my favorite one-liner or scenario but here’s a sampling of some memorable excerpts.

On deciphering the language of love:

“You’re going to make someone so happy one day.”

Translation: That someone will never be me.

The embarrassment of a lingering hickey:

“Of course, a hickey doesn’t look especially classy, but it’s not like you have pubic hair stuck in your teeth.”

On Valentine’s Day:

“When Valentine’s Day rolls around, I almost feel sorry for the guys, agonizing over how much to spend, where to make reservations and whether buying that red lace teddy will get them slapped or laid.”

On First Loves:

“…who can forget the first person they fell hard for – and who fell for them in return? Even if it ended, as it often does, in searing heartbreak, all the stuff up to the eventual break can make an indelible mark on our soul and our psyche.”

On finding out her ex-boyfriend was gay:

“My ex dropped the announcement into an email without much elaboration, and [my friend] S. broke the news to me as gently as possible. My first thought, however, was anything but gentle: Was he taking it up the ass while we were together?”

A Resolution to Live By:

“I will excuse myself from the pity party. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Being single is the equivalent to the ultimate American right: freedom! We can do what we want, with whom we want, without a soul to answer to but ourselves.”

It Coulda Been Me!

All the single ladies make some NOISSSSSSSSSE!!!

How many of you just screamed?

Okay, I'm kidding, but I do wonder if any of you ever get embarrased when the d.j. gives shout-outs to all the single women in the club.

I mean, if you're anything like me, it was cute when you were younger. (My requisite single ladies scream came like clock work after I was done raising the roof when they asked whether the 21 and up crew was in the house.)

But somewhere after 25, the screams became more and more faint, and after 30 they turned into indiscernible mouse peeps accompanied by a quick scan around the room to see whether anyone else actually heard me.

It's not that I'm ashamed of myself, it's just that there is something really taboo about being the single, older woman in the club. Like, just the other day my girlfriends and I were laughing about the stupid things we'd say when we were young, stupid, college girls.

Feeling ourselves because we were young, fine, and...well...stupid, when the d.j. asked for the "30 and up crew" we'd regularly balk that "If I'm still 30 and in the club, please just slap me." To which the automatic response was always, "Ugh! I know! 30!?! Shouldn't they be home with their husbands and kids?"

Well fast-forward about a decade, and my girlfriends and I still make guest appearances in the clubs, and a few of us still have neither a husband nor child.

Now before this reminiscence sends you down the road of "It wasn't supposed to be this way!" and you rush to dust off your Vesta "Congratulations" album circa 1988, allow me to give you some news you could probably use.

Yesterday, I read this story about a Cleveland woman who learned of her husband's 2nd marriage by finding him tagged in his new wife's wedding photos on Facebook!

I nearly dropped my morning mimosa (yes, that's how we do it over here, and no I didn't actually drop it because as appalled as I was, I didn't see the point in wasting perfectly fine champagne!) when I re-read that to make sure the story didn't say ex-husband.

Nope!

She is still married to him!

Once upon a time in a love far, far away! The once happy couple

O-M-G! Singlelistas!! Can you imagine!?! Now I do not condone domestic violence in any shape, form, or fashion but I was absolutely certain that what I was reading was the intro to a new episode of Snapped!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! I mean, not only are you having an affair on me, but it's so deep that you two actually have the foresight to plan the rest of your lives together. Then you actually have the gall to execute the wedding. Then you are wreckless enough to post your wedding pictures on Facebook?!?

WHAT!?!? I CAN'T!!

I'm sorry! I need a martini just to finish writing this story. Hold please....

Okay, I'm back!

Sigh... as I was saying. I read this poor woman's story and had so many questions. Like, how much time was he spending away from home that he had time to plan a whole second wedding? Where did he tell you he was while the actual ceremony was taking place? How are you not in jail? (Oh, wait. No violence. Let's move past that-- quickly!)

Ladies, I couldn't even do justice to this story if I tried to recap it for you, but I promise that it has more scandal than every episode of "Falcon Crest" combined (Note: if you are not old enough to remember "Falcon Crest," you are not old enough to read this blog. I kid! Kinda!).

So what did the two-timing husband have to say about all of this? I'm so glad you asked. In an interview for the Today show he said, and I quote:

"I don't think I was cheating. "If you have a marriage that's not right from the beginning, it's not right at the end."

*dead* as in I literally just died!

Seriously singlelistas, I can't make this stuff up!

I'm sure many of you heard the story and had a similar out-of-body experience, because really... WHO DOES THAT?!?

But that's just it. People do. Her husband did.

Now, I'm not at all implying that all men are bad, and that every man you meet is going to do this to you. In fact, most won't. This case is clearly an extreme and I'm not trying to scare you off the aisle forever.

My point in sharing this story (aside from having the obvious, "Can you believe this!?" girl talk session) is that you should be glad that this wasn't you.

I'd be willing to bet you anything that when she was originally swept away in her fairy-tale romance, she could have never imagined that a few years later her prince charming would be picking another princess and saying "I Do" in the magic kingdom, while she got left behind. (Oh! Did mention that, according to the Associated Press, he also took their son out one day and never returned home. She later found out that he and the kids had moved to Florida with, wait for it... THE NEW WIFE!!! I can't!!!)

As I was sitting at my kitchen table reading this script for the next Lifetime "based on a true story"movie, I thought back on all the princes I'd loved and lost, and thought maybe everything really does happen for a reason.

Now, I don't think any man would run off and get married while still married to me (umm...I can actually almost guarantee you of that. There are just some things you just don't try with some people. I'm just saying!), but I do believe that having to let go then, has saved me from a lot of hurt and heart break now.

I can't imagine how the (first) wife must be feeling right now, and I wouldn't want to change places with her in a million years.

Okay, this isn't really her. Just think of of this as a dramatic interpretation.

It's true that everything that glitters isn't gold, and that applies to flawless, princess cut, Harry Winston, diamond,wedding rings too. I honestly believe that if it were my time to be married, I would be. But looking back, I'm glad that I didn't rush myself into any situation, that wasn't really a perfect fit.

To the original wife, my heart truly goes out to you, and our doors here at the Salon are always wide open.

As for me, the next time I'm at the club and the d.j. starts asking the single women to make some noise, I plan to be the loudest (and the flyest!) singlelista on the dance floor!

Notes from Down The Aisle

So singlelistas! It occurred to me one day, that so many of us are chasing marriage, when we in fact have no real idea of what marriage is.

I mean sure, those among us who had the luxury of growing up in a two-parent household got a front row to seat to our parents' marriages, and of course, there is the never-ending marital bliss we get to see courtesy of our TVs and nearest movie theaters, but how often do we really get to examine what it means to be married, and more importantly what it means to no longer be single?

So often, we women push, fight, and kill to get down that aisle, but do we really know what awaits us after we jump the broom?

Well singlelistas, your fab single-god mother's got you covered! Beginning today, and on thehe first Wednesday of every month hereafter, The Singles' Salon will proudly present to you Notes from Down the Aisle, a series articles written expressly for you about what the transition into marriage has really been like for some.

The wives who participate in this feature have promised to be candid and forthcoming with you about what it's really like to be a bride- well after the festivities have stopped.

"The showers have dried up. The “I Do’s” are done. So, what now?

As a former singlelista (and current singlelista at heart) after the nuptials, I looked in the mirror one day and didn’t know quite who I was or who I was supposed to be. I had always taken such pride in being strong, independent, successful, and free to do anything my heart desired. I was also self-confident and forward-thinking enough to feel that if the right man came along, that marriage was an option… and if not, I would continue to be single and fabulous for life.

Well, it happened! The whirl-wind love affair, brief engagement, and lovely wedding transformed me from the woman who I had always seen myself as (and grown to love by the way) to a person that I didn’t even know. Being strong took a back seat to letting my husband handle it. The independent woman traded in “I” for “we”. My successes seemed to merge with his and the freedom to fulfill all of the desires of “my” heart had to be “our” decision. I was afraid that I had given up being the fabulous diva that I was for my husband's sake.

Singlelistas, finding your prince charming is only half of the battle. The real work is in keeping Mr. Right, keeping Mr. Right happy, and remaining happy yourself… all while trying not to sacrifice who YOU really are (if you’ve even discovered who that fabulous woman is yet). Whew!

To keep my sanity during this identity crisis, I quickly had to realize one thing- in my journey from a singlelista to a matronista, there had to be some CHANGE. I could not continue to be the same person because my life was just not the same anymore. I had to adapt to the current situation because my many (too many) single days were now a thing of the past. Now whether this change was “for better or for worse” (pun intended), that was up to me.

I decided that the Stepford Wife kind of changing was not for me. Besides, wearing a lace-trimmed apron and baking a bundt cake is SO not my style. I decided to make a couple of adjustments at this is juncture in my life to enhance my life without destroying the integrity of the person that I had worked so hard to become:

I HAD TO BE MORE CONSIDERATE- Fortunately (and unfortunately) it’s not just about me anymore. I am a quintessential Leo and it has always been all about me. However, when I got married, surprisingly I found myself being concerned about what my husband felt or thought or what other people thought about him for that matter. I don’t just represent myself (or my momma’s home training) anymore.

I HAD TO STOP BEING SO HARD ON MYSELF- As a perfectionist with a Type-A personality; it has always been hard for me to admit failure or defeat. I thought that I was a superwoman and could do everything (and do it well). Once I reached the point of exhaustion, I realized that I am indeed, as much as I hate to admit it-- HUMAN. However, we do everything our husbands do and more. So, if the dinner doesn’t come out perfect, order take out. Or even better...let him cook!

These are just a couple of the changes that I have made and I’m still making new changes every day. I've made a choice not to view the changes that I made as giving up myself for my husband, but as making the person who I was a better life partner-- but understand singlelistas, that is indeed a conscious choice.

When I decided to say "I do," I didn't realize then that I was also saying "I don't," as in "I" "don't" live here anymore. The I's no longer have it, I've become okay with that. Becoming "we" is definitely an adjustment, and it's one that you have to be absolutely certain you're ready to make.

Through all of the change however, there is one thing that has remained constant- I am ever-evolving, yet still absolutely perfect."

Single Celebs We Love: Kelly Rowland

You liked that, right? No, it's not my attempt at poetry again. Those are the lyrics to Ms. Kelly's newest song "Commander," and don't they just scream "I'M A SINGLELISTA!"

OK, besides the fact that Kelly and I share the same name (I mean you can't be a Kelly and not be fab!), the ever-resilient, don't-call-it-a-comeback songstress has been on our radar for quite some time, and today we're proud to give her the props she's due!

Ms. Rowland first burst onto the scene as a member of the infamous Destiny's Child. Somehow managing to not get voted off the island, in what sometimes seemed to be more of an installment of Mark Burnett's Survivor, than an R&B singing group, Kelly proved that loyalty and commitment to true sisterhood reaps big rewards.

In 2004, after already having established herself as an entertainment heavyweight, Kelly added a a new title to her bio that would bring her tears of joy in the beginning, and tears of heartbreak in the end.

In what turned out to be a rather short-lived engagement, Kelly was once the fiancee of Dallas Cowboy safety, Roy Williams. The pair, both 23 at the time, decided to make a life-long commitment to one another after dating for roughly six months (Nope...I'm not even going there. Keep reading!). After conducting a battery of interviews about her pre-bridal bliss, including one that landed her on the cover of Modern Bride magazine, Kelly announced that she had called off her engagement, exactly two months before the exchange of vows was to take place.

Not one for pity parties, Ms. Rowland pounced back into her work in both entertainment and philanthropy and has not slowed down since.

Although Destiny's Child officially broke up only months after the split between Kelly and her beau, the starlet has continued to prove that attitude really does determine your altitude. Today Ms. Kelly's career boast three solo albums, with the third being scheduled for release later this year.

Determined to take the world by storm Kelly set her sights overseas and has graduated from American celebrity to global sensation, consistently topping the U.K. charts.

In addition to her work in music, Kelly also has credits as an actress (Freddy vs.Jason, The Seat Filler, Girlfriends, American Dream, Smart Guy and others) and TV host (The Fashion show alongside Isaac Mizrahi). She is also a humanitarian, giving back to those in need through her work with the Survivor Foundation, the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, the Staying Alive Foundation, and her most recent philanthropic undertaking, the I Love My Girlfriends Foundation (Hey Kelly! We at The Singles' Salon love our girlfriends too! Sweet!!!!)

Ms. Kelly teaches us that there is no limit to our potential once we decide that failure is not an option, and that there is no point in crying over spilled milk.

Kelly Rowland is indeed a survivor, but more importantly, she's a bonafide singlelista!

Movin' On Mondays: The Greatest Love of All

Hey singlelistas! How was your weekend? Absolutely DIVINE I hope!

Well, it's Monday (sad face!) but more than that it's the first day of our new feature Movin' On Mondays (excited face!).

As we've shared with you, our mission at the Salon is to empower and uplift single women everywhere, and part of that is helping some of our newly single ladies transition into full singlelista status.

We know it's hard to celebrate being single when you're still mourning over the loss of your other half. Break-ups hurt (Don't I know it!?! Remind me to tell you of the time I locked myself in the basement of my parents' house in the dead of winter with no heat on, while playing Etta James "I'd Rather Go Blind" on repeat. On second thought, let's just say it wasn't pretty and move on. Ahem...) so we're dedicating Mondays to helping would-be-singlelistas push past the pain and enter into full out fabulousness!

Today we're helping one reader check out of Heartbreak Hotel and into The Singles' Salon. An excerpt of what she wrote us is below:

"I just don't know what to do."

"...I've been in this relationship for 11 years now and for the past five I've watched it deteriorate to almost nothing.

We don't really talk anymore and we fight more than we get along because I believe he's doing things that my boyfriend shouldn't be doing. I've never really CAUGHT him cheating, but I know enough to know that things aren't on the straight and narrow with him.

We used to do almost everything together, but now it's as though we lead two completely separate lives. In my head I know I'm holding on to what we used to have, because I would have never signed up for this B.S. that we have now. My heart isn't quite ready to let go though because I really and truly do love him.

I can't believe I'm even writing this letter, but I can't talk to my friends about it anymore because they don't like him and I already know what they're going to say. I just don't know what to do. Should I stay or should I go? I just want to be happy. I used to be happy with him. Now I just don't know anymore."

Oh, doll! My heart is breaking just reading your letter because it's a feeling I know all too well. The question of when to call it quits is so personal that I unfortunately can't give you a static timeline that tells you exactly what point you need to wave the white flag, as much as I wish I could.

I can tell you this with complete confidence though, you should not be alone in your relationship. One of the biggest complaints women who are not in relationships have is that we get tired of being alone. What many of us forget though is that we have the freedom of choice in that matter. No, we may not be able to speed dial the man of our dreams on command, but there usually is somebody we can call if we really just want company for the moment. (Don't judge me. Even Broadway has stand-ins for its leading men!)

The problem with being in a two-some where the other person has seemingly gone awol is that even in your loneliest hour, you no longer have the freedom of calling up your stand-in.

I'm not going to tell you to whether or not to leave your relationship, because that's a call that only you can make. I do however want to address the last line of your letter. My strong advice is Don't chase a relationship, chase happiness.

When we place our relationships as the most important priority in our lives, if we don't choose well we usually wind up sacrificing our own happiness. When we put our happiness first, we often sacrifice bad relationships. Once you learn to love you first, it will be much easier to gauge your partner's love (or lack there-of) for you.

Finally, with absolutely no judgement attached, I want to point out that the fact that he is still your boyfriend after 11 years may be very telling. It's also worth noting that many times when our friends, those who truly love us, don't approve of our partners there's usually a really good reason for that.

It is true that love is blind, but let the pursuit of your own happiness be your eyes. You have the power to mend your own broken heart, and it sounds like you've got a strong circle of friends to help support you through it.

Single Celebs We Love- Drew Barrymore

"So I didn't settle with the wrong person yet. Big deal!"

While this certainly sounds like a sentiment conceived by our writers here at the Salon, this ode to freedom actually comes from a very famous CoverGirl. The fact that Drew Barrymore had enough chutzpah to speak this truth in her interview in this month's Elle magazine, tells us everything we need to know to certify that she is indeed a singlelista!

The ever-so-accomplished Barrymore has quite a list of achievements. The actor, producer, director, entrepreneur, spokesperson, and model began her acting career at 11 months old, and has been working it ever since.

Although it wasn't her first acting gig, Barrymore won our hearts in 1982 when she played the epically adorable Gertie in the sci-fi classic E.T. (Note: if you are not old enough to remember actually watching this movie, then you are not old enough to be reading this blog. In that case, we're going to kindly refer you to the Nickelodeon or Disney Channel sites. Thank you!).

With more than two decades of stardom behind her, Barrymore has managed to keep her place in both the hearts and minds of the world, by achieving true superstar status and maintaining her relevance to pop culture and permanency in showbiz.

The road for this starlet hasn't always been easy; at only 13 she battled a very public drug addiction and was labeled a Hollywood bad girl by the media (no need to re-read that. I didn't switch subjects to Lindsey Lohan. Drew's just been there, done that. Maybe there's hope for Lohan after all!). As an adult, Barrymore was married, and divorced-- twice. (Her last husband was the is-he-really-even-funny comedian, Tom Green. I must admit I wasn't sad to see them split. I always thought she was too classy for him anyway).

"If you're 35 and single and it's a choice, it feels fine." Barrymore tells Elle in the August 2010 issue.

Being the true singlelista that Barrymore is, she never let life's obstacles derail her train to happiness. With an unapologetic on-again-off-again boyfriend "situation", a resume that even movie star veterans would kill for, and enough chick flick sensations to cement her legacy in Hollywood history, Drew Barrymore continues to prove that self-love really does conquer all.
