The Skip Magazine reaches 4th Birthday!!

We have been so busy we forgot that the magazine reaches it's 4th birthday in July, how the time has flown!!

I remember ringing a lot of strangers up and letting them know that we were launching The SKIP as a dedicated trade magazine to the waste industry back in June 2005 and thankfully enough people shared the same vision and advertised in that very first issue.

The strangers back in 2005 have become very good friends over the years, we can't list everyone in detail the web page would take to long to load but special thanks go out to

Roger Hudspith "The Garbage Guru"

Riverside Waste, Smulders Waste, Hammel UK, Firstgrade recycling, Bmc Trucks, Baughans Barrel Screens, GM Insurance Brokers, Waste handling Solutions and everyone else we thank you for joining us and making The Skip Mag great!

Not forgetting the readers who love the magazine and submit all the pictures that make up our skip hunks and skip chicks and we promise to update them on the web soon!!

The Skip Rotator, skip lifting equipment

THE ROTATOR!!!

The Skip presents a new design relating to loading and off-loading of all types of skips. Saving TIME and MONEY for YOU the operator.

The product is a step-less and unlimited rotation device which enables loading and off-loading of skips at any desired angle. The design offers many advantages, especially in urban areas where skips are often required to be placed in or collected from almost impossible locations.

The Skip Rotator Loading

Skips can be loaded or off-loaded over the sides of trailers. When large trailers with three skips loaded in a row are used, even the central skip can be easily reached. Extra devices previously used in these situations are now no longer required.

Surveys show that on average, skip-lorry drivers must perform 5 extra positioning movements per day to satisfy the customer’s wishes. These extra movements waste time and fuel which translates directly into higher running costs for the skip operator. Calculations show that a skip rotator can pay for itself in as little as 1 year.

The Skip Rotator in action

The skip rotator will also improve the longevity of a skip loader. With a skip rotator the telescopic arms are more evenly loaded which reduces wear. The skip rotator also prevents bending or twisting of a single telescopic arm through over-loading.

The rotary drive is an electric/pneumatic unit and is easily coupled to the existing power sources already present on the vehicle.

The skip rotator can be fitted to all makes of new or used skip-loaders up to a capacity of 18 tonnes.
Up to 4 empty skips can still be stacked on a vehicle fitted with a skip rotator.

These are available for £8850 + vat + delivery with fitting included

‘Theft by Finding’ Charge for Teen Who Dumped Wallet in Skip

A Northumberland youth, who found a wallet on a bus and later threw it into a hire skip, has been charged with the lesser-heard offence of ‘theft by finding’.

When the 17-year-old, from Alnwick, found the wallet on the 518 service last year, he chose not to do the honourable thing of handing it in, but instead got himself caught
on CCTV ditching it in a skip near Alnwick bus station.

The wallet was later reunited with its owner, who claimed that £40 was missing.
Discovering the hard way that possession is in fact not nine tenths of the law, the teen dumper pleaded guilty to ‘theft by finding’ and received a nine hour reparation order, under the supervision of the Youth Offending Team.

We say: “Why wasn’t he charged for the skip jacking offence if he was caught in the act??”

Bizarre Waste Survey

Waste recently became the subject of a national survey, turning up some strange cast offs. The survey, of one hundred waste transfer stations and household tips, was conducted by waste management firm HIPPOWASTE™ in a bid to discover the top ten strangest thrown away items.

James Bennett, managing director of HIPPOWASTE™, explained:
“Waste and how much we throw away is a serious business in the UK but we wanted to
do some light-hearted research into what ends up in our bins. This survey has generated some fascinating results and shows that people will literally throw anything away, whether intentionally or by mistake!”

So what strange objects made it into the top ten? Well for starters we have a mattress stuffed with over £5,000 worth of savings left by an elderly lady who had forgotten it was there! Next up is an entire collection of The Beano spanning 25 years. A spooky suitcase full of human skulls and bones was also found. (The bones were reportedly from a biology lab.) A £3,000 wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses were sent on a rubbish detour, instead of going to the dry cleaners. And a live tortoise was discovered crawling around a green waste bin. Happily though, the tortoise was reunited with its owner.

A rather disgruntled wife, on discovering her husband’s infidelity, trashed his entire wardrobe including golf clubs. Contents of a police evidence bag for a court case mysteriously found their way into the bin as well as top secret documents and blueprints for a British aircraft carrier. In the most dramatic instances a hoax bomb was discovered, initiating an army investigation and £200,000 of travel agency takings, found in black bin liners, instigated a major recovery operation.

Other items not quite making the top ten included false legs, passports, anti-aircraft shells, the entire Saturday takings of a major shopping centre, old coins from 1820 featuring Queen Victoria and a week’s worth of family washing.

So keep an eye on what comes in on those skips. You could get rich, become a hero by saving a beloved pet or find yourself in the middle of a police investigation.

TO NASRO OR NOT TO NASRO?

The Skip magazine has received an overwhelming number of calls and letters from operators requesting the set up of a trade body to represent the views of the skip hire and recycling industry. We have recently attended a meeting with various representatives from the sector and propose the formation of the National Association of Skip & Recycling Operators (“NASRO”), which we believe you will agree, is long overdue.

The benefits of the NASRO will include;

1.	A powerful lobby for facilitating change in the regulatory regime where change is needed by creating strength in numbers;

2.	A collective voice when dealing with the Environment Agency, local authorities and other statutory bodies, where as individual operators would otherwise be loath to make complaints for fear of backlash perceived or otherwise.

We are interested in receiving comments from those of you who feel it would be advantageous to get involved with this new trade body. It has been suggested that any membership fee should be nominal, principally just to cover administration costs.

Please email or write your thoughts and ideas to Jenny Watts (jw@dynesolicitors.co.uk, Dyne Solicitors Limited, The Whitehouse, High Street, Tattenhall, Cheshire, CH3 9PX) or call Jenny on 01829 773100. We are arranging an open forum meeting in February at a venue and date to be confirmed nearer the time. This will give all interested parties an opportunity to join up and voice their concerns and opinions.

The association name is not set in stone hence we would be grateful if any of you have suggestions for a good name? If we decide to use your suggestion, membership will be offered free for the first year and who knows maybe a bottle of bubbly might be thrown in to celebrate!!!

We wish to extend our appreciation to Dyne Solicitors Limited for hosting the first meeting of what we anticipate will be a hugely successful trade association. Also our thanks to; Greencycle PLC, Tudor Griffiths Group, Envirolink Northwest, Oaktree Environmental Limited, Southport Skip Hire, Bradwell Skip Services and Hugh Hoather President of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management for attending and supporting the first meeting.

£68,000 Arson Attack

Hertfordshire Skip Hire in Leyden Road, Stevenage was the victim of an arson attack at the end of last year. Brothers Robert and Paul Crane, who run the business, are facing a crippling £68,000 worth of damages after three lorries and an excavator were destroyed in the fire.

The brothers, of Broadwater, Stevenage, said:
“We've lost all our skip lorries and we are desperately searching for replacements so we can deliver skips to clients.

“The cost of all the damage is around £68,000, but we are determined to carry on despite what has happened. We won't be driven out of business by what has happened.”

Fire crews from Stevenage, Hitchin and Welwyn fought for almost two hours to get the blaze under control.

A police spokesperson said:

“It’s believed at this stage that the offenders gained access to the property and started at least two separate fires in two lorries - the fire spread to a lorry and plant machinery and caused substantial damage.”

If anyone has any information about the incident, they are being urged to call DC Neil Davies on 0845 33 00 222.

Waste Industry 1, Heritage 0

The Waste Industry appears to be gaining status, as it becomes a higher priority than historical buildings. Halton Council’s Development Control Committee has approved a plan to bulldoze Ivy House – a derelict eighteenth century, grade two listed building, in Marsh Lane, Runcorn – and replace it with a waste transfer station.

A proposed 53m-long building would enclose all operations. The operations being the sorting and segregation of dry waste materials including soil, hardcore, and construction waste, as well as timber, paper, green waste, plastic and metal.

The station would be operational twenty-four hours a day and planning officers have ordered that a dust suppression system must be incorporated.

A report determined that the deterioration of Ivy House, which was listed as a grade two building over thirty years ago, meant its importance was now limited. It said:

“Due to the significant degradation of the building a substantial amount of work and rebuilding would be required to renovate the property into a useable building.
“When considered against current listing criteria for a building of this type, any such renovated building is unlikely to warrant its status.

“It has been demonstrated that the loss of Ivy House, which is necessary to facilitate this proposal, is acceptable.”

Sherlock Home Videos

Staff at skip hire company Haulaway Ltd, in Hailsham, have donned the proverbial deer-stalker and pipe and turned detective after a video camera was found dumped in a skip.

The discovered articles contained family footage including a graduation, a garden party and a birthday celebration. The camera was found, with three tapes and a memory stick, in a skip outside building works in Upper Carlisle Road, Eastbourne.
Depot manager Steve Walton said: “For all the world, it looks like the camera has been stolen and chucked away. The footage that is on there, those sort of memories are too good to throw away.

“You look at the graduation ceremony and you think, this is somebody's life. It is precious to somebody, we just can't see that they could have physically thrown this sort of equipment away.”

In a bid to return the property to its rightful owner, staff at Haulaway Ltd have been searching the videos for clues. They came across a car in the films but unfortunately the registration plate was unreadable.

The owner of the camera can contact the depot manager on 01323 441396 and will be asked to describe the contents of the films as proof of ownership.
