The Azzurri faced the USA for the 11th official time (according to RSSSF) from the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa. Italy had won seven and drawn three. Tonight was the first-ever loss against the United States of America at the senior level.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the last time that the Azzurri lost in Genoa was in January 1920 (0-4 vs. Austria). Italy had won 15 games and drawn five times since that time before the US loss.

"I gave everything and am not happy because we could have scored. But it is not easy to come into a game off the bench. I missed scoring a goal on two occasions. Perhaps also due to emotion. Italy boss, Cesare Prandelli, gave another press conference ahead of the US friendly tomorrow night from Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa:

His Starting Lineup

"Vi ho abituati male, all’Europeo non ve la darò più" chiosa il c.t. Intanto, però, eccola: Buffon; Maggio, Barzagli, Ogbonna, Criscito; Marchisio, Pirlo, Nocerino; Thiago Motta; Matri, Giovinco."

"I've made you accustomed to me (not releasing the lineup before a game) in a bad way. At the Euro, I won't do it anymore. Anyway, here is the lineup:

Buffon; Maggio, Barzagli, Ogbonna, Criscito; Marchisio, Pirlo, Nocerino; Thiago Motta; Matri, Giovinco."

On Italy's Chances at Euro 2012

"Dove può arrivare l’Italia? La pressione aumenta. Dipenderà anche dal clima generale, da tutti. Non possiamo discutere così (come successo ieri, ndr) del modo in cui interpretiamo il codice etico, mi cadono le braccia. Non dobbiamo arrivare a Euro 2012 con fragilità tecniche o psicologiche. Le principali avversarie sono facili da individuare: Spagna, Germania e Olanda. Ma noi dobbiamo anzitutto pensare al nostro girone. La Croazia quindi è temibile quanto la Spagna".

On Upcoming Friendlies

"Ce ne saranno spero altre due, ma a ridosso dell’Europeo. Quello di domani con gli Usa è dunque un test importante. Mi serve capire quanto questa coppia d’attacco può essere interessante. Così come capire se giovani come Ogbonna e Borini possono fare parte del gruppo che andrà all’Europeo. Bisogna valutare le alternative, anche se in testa l’11 per l’Europeo ce l’ho".

"We hope there'll be two more but right before the Euro. The one tomorrow against the USA is therefore an important test. It helps me to understand how interesting this strike partnership can be. Also to understand if young players such as Angelo Ogbonna and Fabio Borini can take part of the group that will go to the Euro. You have to evaluate alternatives even if I have a starting XI in mind already."

On His Azzurri Attack

"E’ da ricostruire. Voglio aspettare sino all’ultimo momento Rossi e Cassano. Questa partita mi può servire, per questo intento. Matri dà profondità, Giovinco è bravo a trovare la posizione tra centrocampo e attacco, e i gol li sa fare. Balotelli ha preso 8 giornate di squalifica, sinora, in Inghilterra. Sono tante. Un grande giocatore deve saper fronteggiare le provocazioni, non devono reagire. Non mi ha chiamato, no. Poi potenzialmente può avere una carriera straordinaria. Ma non ci sono giustificazioni per certi comportamenti. Di Natale? Non mi sembrava giusto convocarlo dopo un infortunio. Non ha bisogno di essere provato. So già dove può giocare. Borriello e Quagliarella già depennati? No, li seguiamo comunque".

"It has to be rebuilt. I want to wait until the last minute for Giuseppe Rossi and Antonio Cassano. This friendly can help me with this intent. Alessandro Matri gives width, Sebastian Giovinco is very good to find the position between the midfield and the attack. And he knows how to score goals.

Balotelli has had eight games of disqualification, up to now, in England. That's a lot. A great player needs to know how to handle provocations. They can't react. He didn't phone me. No. He can potentially have an extraordinary career. But there are not justifications for certain behaviors. Antonio Di Natale? It didn't seem right to be to call him up after his injury. He doesn't need to be tested. I already know where he can play. Are Marco Borriello and Fabio Quagliarella already out of the mix? No, I'll still continue to follow them."

On De Rossi's Exclusion

"Ho voluto provare altri centrocampisti. I miei sei giocatori di metà campo (i 4 che giocano, più il romanista e Montolivo, ndr) devono considerarsi tutti titolari. Manca un classico trequartista nel nostro progetto tecnico recente. Poi seguiamo giocatori come Diamanti e Cossu".

"I wanted to try out other midfielders. My six midfielders (the four who play, De Rossi and Riccardo Montolivo), have to be considered as starters. A classic 'trequartista' (a creative player such as Roberto Baggio who bridges the midfield and attack) has been missing from our technical project recently. Then, we follow players such as Diamanti and Cossu."

On Leonardo Bonucci of Juventus

US manager, Jurgen Klinsmann, showcased his excellent command of Italian at a pre-match press conference in Genoa ahead of the friendly with Italy tomorrow night.

How the Game Came About

"Ho chiamato Prandelli per provare ad organizzare questa partita, e lui l’ha fatto, lo ringrazio. L’amichevole qui a Genova di domani sera ci offre un’opportunità di crescere come squadra. In giugno cominceremo le qualificazione per Brasile 2014. Incontrare l’Italia, in questo cammino, è speciale. Siamo qui per competere e imparare. Mi aspetto una partita eccitante, spero lo stadio sia pieno e ci sia una bella atmosfera".

"I called Cesare Prandelli to try to organize this friendly. And he did it and I thank him. The friendly here in Genoa tomorrow night gives us an opportunity to grow as a team. In June, we begin qualification games for the World Cup in Brazil. To encounter Italy on this road is special. We're here to compete and learn. I anticipate an exciting game. I hope that the stadium is full and that there is a great atmosphere."

On His Italian Playing Experience

"Qui in Italia ho imparato tante cose. Apprezzo la cultura italiana e il vostro modo di vivere. La cultura sportiva? Non sono in grado di giudicare. Il codice etico di Prandelli? Lo capisco benissimo. Deve avere un gruppo che tira nella stessa direzione. Poi ogni caso è diverso. Questo vale per Balotelli. Noi abbiamo avuto Jones squalificato in Bundesliga, ma ho continuato a chiamarlo in nazionale. Ripeto, ogni caso è diverso. Un codice etico è necessario nella società, prima ancora che nello sport. Il rispetto è importante in ogni ambito della vita. Poi ogni cultura è diversa. Io ho capito qui in Italia che bisogna adattarsi al Paese, all’ambiente, io da giocatore ho fatto così".

"Here in Italy, I learned so many things. I appreciate Italian culture and your way of life. The sporting culture? I'm not in a position to judge. The ethical code of Prandelli? I understand it very well. You have to have a group that shoots in the same direction. Then, every case is different. That is true for Balotelli.

We had Jermaine Jones disqualified in the Bundesliga but I continued to call him up for the national team. I repeat, each case is different. An ethical code is necessary in society before one in sport. Respect is important in all walks of life. Then, each culture is different. I understood that here in Italy that you need to adapt to the country and the environment. As a player, I did it."

On the US Team

"Non siamo venuti qui per difenderci. Abbiamo giocatori che sono protagonisti nei campionati in Europa, hanno qualità. Vivo in America, a Los Angeles, da 14 anni, ho la moglie americana, e i bimbi più americani che tedeschi".

"We didn't come here to defend. We have players who are protagonists in European leagues. They have quality. I live in America, Los Angeles, for 14 years. I have an American wife and children who are more American than German."

On Germany and the Challengers to Spain

"La Germania è veramente forte, non so se è più forte dell’Italia. Infatti avete una Nazionale molto forte, Prandelli ha fatto un grandissimo lavoro in prospettiva Europeo. La Germania è stata più costante, negli ultimi anni. Poi bisogna considerare anche l’Olanda e la Francia, che abbiamo affrontato di recente. Bisogna vedere chi potrà battere la Spagna".

"Germany is truly strong. I don't know if they are stronger than Italy. In fact, you have a very strong national team. Prandelli has done a great job ahead of the Euro. Germany has been more consistent in the last few years. Then you need to also take into account the Netherlands and France, who we took on recently. You need to see who will be able to beat Spain."

On Major League Soccer

"La lega americana sta crescendo ogni anno, anche se non è ancora a livello europeo. Del Piero in America a fine stagione? Io non l’ho sentito. Certo può essere un’esperienza stupenda per qualunque giocatore".

On His Future and the Current State of Internazionale

"Adesso penso a qualificare gli Usa per il Mondiale in Brasile. Il futuro? Si vedrà. L’Inter? Tifo per loro. Ho vissuto tre anni stupendi a Milano in nerazzurro".

"Now I am thinking to qualify the USA for the World Cup in Brazil. The future? One will see. Inter? I support them. I experienced three great years in Milan as an Internazionale player."
