If you are looking for music to help you study or to just kick back and make the time go by a little more pleasantly, this is what you need. The guys over at ChillHop.com are doing an amazing job at mixing together chill hip hop music.

What is chill hip hop?

Simply put, and this is only my own definition, it is ambient hip hop. Basically this is the kind of hip hop that does not draw attention to itself, it just creates a laid-back mood. There are no heavy bass lines or drums, the beats just flow. I find it amazing for actually doing some work, because the songs are relatively uptempo (to keep you awake), while also giving you a chilled, creative mood.

Album of the week (July 7-13, 2014) - Tubular Bells

This is a very famous album. Originally released in 1973 after almost two years of production work, it is the album that propelled Mike Oldfield into stardom. The story of Tubular Bells is closely linked to that of the Virgin record label and is well presented in Richard Branson’s memoir “Losing My Virginity: How I Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way” . Basically, the release of this album paved the way for the success of the Virgin group, providing the financial capital and the public exposure.

Tubular Bells is all instrumental and electronica. Mike Oldfield does a great job of moving from one set of instruments to another in truly fluent composition. This is an amazing album, that is best listened to in its entirety. An interesting and quirky part of the composition is that the end of part one features a session in which the names of the instruments are being called out – as if in the ending of a concert.

Why is it that great?

Well, this is one of these recordings in which you can become lost. There are no sudden changes in tempo, just a constant sound evolution that truly captures your attention. It’s a very complex recording and you will be amazed at the intricacies of the background sound patterns. I cannot really explain this in words, but the background of Tubular Bells gives me a tingling sensation in my chest. This physical manifestation is not something I experience often – only happens with some pieces of music. This is why I decided to use this album as this week’s recommendation.

This really strikes a chord with me, I remember fondly how I missed my hometown and country while gone for 6 months. You can never underestimate the connection you have with your "homeland". Amazing song, another one which gives me the goosebumps.

T.I. and Rihanna. This it is a truly good song.

I like the whole idea of going your own way in life. I don't know about you, but this song makes me feel better about what I do have. All things considered, I think we're all doing pretty well.

Even if you're just sitting in front of the computer reading this post, you're still ok. You might even be enjoying a snack or a drink. Personally I'm just sitting back in my chair, writing a little bit before going to my warm bed. The speakers are softly playing this song in the background, my lava lamp is on. Things are great actually.

Other people don't have the luxury of just sittin' around. I'm really thankful for what I have and I am going to do what's right and give something back every day of my life.

T.I. feat. Rihanna - Live your life

In case you're wondering, the opening part is adapted from a hit song here in Europe, Dragostea din Tei, by O-Zone. It's a band from Moldova and since I'm Moldavian myself, it does make me kinda proud to hear that beat in a Rihanna song.

This lady's voice is just so sexy. I can't put my finger on the reason why this is but she sounds amazing. She is Liliana Saumet, the vocalist for Bomba Estereo, from Colombia. I discovered this amazing musical project while watching Dexter, the TV series with the serial killer who works for the police :) Interesting show.

Ok, in this post I'd like to share some songs by Carlos Santana, the famous guitarist. If you're not listening to Santana yet, you really should play the following songs. Me saying that he is a great musician is not even necessary. It would be like me saying to you something like "chocolate is good". It's that good believe me!

His music is wonderfully smooth and always up-to-date. Even if he's been playing since the 60's, he always collaborated with other musicians. He also commands massive respect in the music industry for promoting talented young musicians.

These are songs I really love, all of them produced by Santana, featuring various other great artists:

1. Adouma - from the album Shaman, featuring Angelique Kidjo.

God, I just forgot that this song always sticks to my mind. Adouma-douma-douma-douma :) Brings back memories too.

2. You are my kind - also from Shaman. Santana and Seal.

This is a more laid back beat, but very nice and smooth. This is what I understand by a true love song. I'm not into the whole soapy emotional stuff. This is just real. If you were ever in love, you'll definitely enjoy this.

3. The entire Shaman album :)

You should really get this one. It's an amazing album. It works in every situation. You can hang out with friends and have it playing in the background, you can use it for long driving situations, walking to school with your headphones on etc. It's a great mixture of musical styles, all held together by Santana's amazing guitar playing.

4. Into The Night- from the album Ultimate Santana, with Chad Kroeger from Nickelback.

Chad Kroeger has a wonderful voice. It works wonders with Santana's guitar.

5. Smooth - from the album Supernatural, with vocals by Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20.

Just like the name states, it's a very smooth song.

Okay, this is my short selection of Santana songs, but really, I have yet to hear a bad song produced by this guy. It's just the kind of music that you can listen to no matter what genre you're into. There's always something new in Santana's music and it's really addictive. Great job Carlos, i give you my humble thanks for creating this amazing music!

Flo Rida

Flo Rida really made it big time. He does deserve this popularity though, because most of his songs are really really fun to listen and dance to. That's the way to go I think in today's music. If you produce fun stuff, more people will listen to your songs, you'll get more airplay etc.

I am truly a sucker for a happy beat. Call me shallow, but at the end of the day, I'd much rather look back on all the smiling moments that happened. There's a lot to be sad about, but if you use fun uptempo music as a cure for a bad mood, things will get better!

So really, try to play some of the songs on this blog in the morning before you go to work. I promise you'll have a better, more productive day and whoever you meet, you'll brighten up their day as well. That's the beauty of music really...it can spark up a lot of joy!
