StumbleUpon allows you to channel surf the web by “stumbling upon” web sites of any type as well as web sites that are of interest to you.

In there own words:

“StumbleUpon discovers web sites based on your interests. Whether it’s a web page, photo or video, our personalized recommendation engine learns what you like, and bring you more.”

The StumbleUpon Toolbar

If you’re new to StumbleUpon go create an account and install their toolbar.

The StumbleUpon Toolbar

StumbleUpon offers a toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer. By installing the toolbar you’ll be able to “channel surf” the web by simply clicking on a button that says, “Stumble!“.

Start Voting

Start clicking on the Stumble! button and you’ll be presented with web sites in random order. As you stumble along you can train the system by clicking on the thumbs up “I like it!” button as well as the thumbs down button if you don’t like a web site StumbleUpon delivers to you.

I wouldn’t use the thumbs down too much in the beginning until you’ve used StumbleUpon for a while. You don’t have to vote up or down for any web site. You never know what you’ll end up liking or disliking later down the road. However, using the thumbs up - I like it! will help train the StumbleUpon system to bring you more web sites that you might like.

I’ll point out a few more toolbar features but a more complete guide can be found at their site - StumbleUpon Guide.

Other Toolbar Features

From the toolbar you’ll also be able to email a web site you like to people you know.

Reviews - Another feature you might want to try is the review bubble. When you land on a web site you like and you want to see what other people have said about it, click on the white bubble icon on the toolbar. If you hover your mouse over the icons you’ll see a little pop-up window with text that describes what that button does.

Filters - Moving to the right still on the toolbar you’ll find the word “All”. This tells the Stumble! button to select any web site out there to bring to you. After you play with stumbling all the different web sites out there, you might want to filter sites that StumbleUpon brings you by clicking on the “All” button and select a more specific category of web sites you want SU to bring you.

Images and Videos - Other types of web sites you can stumble to our image only and video only websites. There are icons on the toolbar just for those types of sites as well.

I think you get the picture now on how to use the toolbar.

StumbleUpon Friends

As you stumble upon various websites, SU will present on your home page, people who select sites that you’re interested in as well. This is part of the SU formula.

Tagging - There is a tagging feature as well that will give you the ability to tag web sites you stumble and like. The tag button is located on the toolbar so you can easily tag a web site. This will add to the tag cloud on the right sidebar of your SU home pages.

That’s just a quick introduction to StumbleUpon to get you going.

Here’s my profile - http://bills2000.stumbleupon.com/ - if you want to add me as a friend and I’ll add you. Feel free to leave your profile in the comments as well.

I’d be interested in hearing about your links

What links have helped you in the last 24 hours from Twitter?

One final note - I created this blog post in Google Docs and I will probably not do that again. I hate the HTML that was generated as well as missing all the bolds on the numbers. All the HTML ended up all packed together. The permalink was originally 712 instead of 22-terrific-tweets, I know that’s probably not Google Docs job.

I wanted to experiment posting this way but might have to reconsider. Also, on the initial publish of the post from Google Docs it did not send the title of the article, the title was empty. So I’ll go back and check out some of the options in Google Docs to see if I missed anything.

For those of you that have never heard of StumbleUpon, it’s a website that allows you to randomly “Stumble Upon” websites. You install a toolbar in your browser and click on a button that says, “Stumble!” and it will start to present you with websites.

There are categories that you can select so StumbleUpon will only present you with websites that contain the content that you’re interested in. It’s a very easy way to browse the web.

As website publishers and bloggers we can write content that will help drive StumbleUpon users to your site and vote for your site by clicking on a button with the “Thumbs Up” symbol. But users can also click on the “Thumbs Down” symbol as well, which is not good.

For web publishers, this article lays out the foundation for driving StumbleUpon traffic to your website or blog and getting “Thumbs Up” votes on your content. This will help drive traffic to your site and content for a long time as other StumbleUpon users “discover” your site.

Set The Foundation

Set the foundation for driving traffic to your blog by knowing what type of content will drive traffic to your blog. Content is King as they say and it applies to writing articles that get stumbled.

Here are 3 resources that will help you create the right content:

Blog Profits Blueprint by Yaro Starak

Killer Flagship Content by Chris Garrett

Cornerstone Content by Brian Clark

Immense yourself in the above information and you’ll be on your way to knowing and creating exactly what type of content will get stumbled.

The kind of content I am talking about is content that encourages people to subscribe to your blog and defines you as a blogger. It also gets linked to from other blogs, as well as votes from social media sites like StumbleUpon. This kind of content does not include short opinion posts, news snippets or weekly roundup links.

A useful exercise for any blogger is to look at the content you’ve created during the previous week or month and ask youself, “Did I write any outstanding content?” If not, continue to read the above three resources and implement content described by their examples.

Another useful exercise is to take one of the example articles from on of the resources above and place words in the article that pertain to your blog. Now, this exercise doesn’t work every time, but it’s worth the time to try so you can see what great content might begin to look like in the area you blog about.

Getting Votes

You need votes from other people to help drive traffic to your site. The more votes you get on your content the more traffic you receive. You need to get votes from different people over time. If the same people on StumbleUpon keep voting your articles, your SU traffic will diminish and could possibly stop all together.

However, it’s ok for the same people to continue to help you with your articles by voting for them. Encourage your voters to use StumbleUpon as it was intended, to “Stumble Upon” various types of Internet content. Subscribe to The Spinning Donut so you don’t miss any future articles that explain how to get different people to stumble your articles.

Also, your regular blog readers are not the same as StumbleUpon users.

Good Quality Content

This is content that people will enjoy. Whether your content is text, an image or a video, it must be good quality. Use common sense when it comes to good content. Whether you’re talking about content for StumbleUpon or not, common sense tells you that good content rules. Again, refer to the three resources above on creating good content.

Be a StumbleUpon User

Install the StumbleUpon toolbar. This will allow you to efficiently stumble websites that you find appealing. While you stumble various sites, notice what’s above “the fold”. The fold is the area you see on a website that is before you have to scroll down the page. Make sure you grab your readers attention above the fold so they don’t have to scroll down to figure out what they’re looking at. There is a higher chance you’ll lose StumbleUpon visitors if they have to scroll down to start reading your content.

Look at Your Statistics

Use the freely available Google Analytics to find out the following attributes of your visitors:

Which browsers are your readers using? Google Analytics will show you this. Install the most common browsers on your machine so you can test what your pages look like in each browser or test them using Browsershots.

What screen resolution are your visitors using? Design your blog around that and make sure they don’t have to scroll horizontally when they arrive. For instance, the majority of my readers come to my site using 1024 x 768 screen resolution. So I made sure my site visitors would not have to scroll horizontally. I also don’t have a humongous image that takes up “the fold”.

Look at the Internet connection speed your readers are using when they come to your site. If you have big images and your users have slower connection speeds, that will impact how fast your home page will download to their machine and whether they stick around or not.

With the above points in mind, re-work the layout of your site if necessary to make sure your readers don’t stumble on to other sites before stumbling yours.

Good Content and StumbleUpon

Timeless Content - Traffic will continue to arrive at content that is not time dependent. Content that StumbleUpon and other social media sites will drive traffic to your blog over a steady period of time and not just a rush of traffic for a short period of time.

Stand-Alone Content - Content that stands alone or could be one web page for instance. A StumbleUpon user should be able to make sense of your content that gets stumbled without knowing anything about your blog or previous articles. If the article that is stumbled is in a series, make sure you provide links to each article in the series. If you’re a WordPress user, the In Series plugin makes it simple.

Eye-Catching Content - Because StumbleUpon users click through sites quickly, make sure you’re site has some “visual-appeal” to it. The use of colors, a different theme or image can help you as long as it doesn’t push your content down further below “the fold”.

Attention Grabbing Headlines - Writing headlines that grab their attention and an opening paragraph will encourage them to keep reading.

Bad Content and StumbleUpon

Slow Loading Pages - Here are some ways to ensure people who come to your website will quickly move on to other sites and not stay at yours:

Large graphics that take forever to load

A bunch of widgets that are supposedly “cool” and provide lots of functionality but take time to load and do their thing

Playing music when someone lands on your website can slow it down as well as annoy the heck out of your readers and interrupt the music they might be already playing on their computer.

Perform a speed test on the pages you want stumbled with this free website performance tool and web page speed analysis - Web Page Analyzer. The faster the page loads the better. It will also depend on the connection speeds of your readers that you discovered with Google Analytics.

Web Page Errors - If you’re pages contain errors, fix them. If you know how to fix them yourself, great. If not, get help in forums or hire a technical person to fix them for you. If you’re a blogger and the technical side of things interest you, read Caroline Middlebrook’s Blog Validation: Do You Validate Your Blog?

You might try Elance or Guru.com if you want to hire someone to do all the work for you.

Too Many Ads - StumbleUpon users are ‘web-savvy’ folks. Like anyone visiting your website, most folks will tolerate some ads. But if you trick your site out with every possible ad that comes your way so you think you can make megabucks, you’ll have visitors going the other way - away from your site - quickly.

If you want to check out other ways to make money with your website read Make Money Blogging By ‘Selling’ Your Knowledge.

Social Media Voting - If you submit your articles to multiple social media sites, don’t submit the link from one social media site to another. In other words, DO submit the content page from your blog or website to a social media site, but don’t submit a link from Digg to StumbleUpon. This is considered greedy because you’re actually trying to stumble another social media link and not the link to you content.

Don’t Tie Their Hands (or Browsers) - Pop-ups or stuff that gets in the way of your content being read by StumbleUpon users is not good. Anything that takes your reader’s attention away from your content will cause irritation. Just say no.

In Daniel Scocco’s article Are Social Networks Like the Fashion Industry? at DailyBlogTips, Daniel presents an argument on whether social networks are like the fashion industry where one social site becomes popular for a period of time and then everyone moves on to something new and cool, and then - rinse and repeat. Daniel asks, “Are we looking for something that will add real value for our lives, or are we just following what everyone else is doing?” As I started to comment on Daniel’s article I realized I had switched over into book mode and not short comment mode. So I wrote this blog post.

Being Cool with Social Networks

(Tongue-in-cheek) Well, duh, we all want to be cool, and being involved with the latest social networking site(s) will definitely make you the life of the party. If you look at social networking in the context of being cool, then yes, it will make you cool in the short term. Again, tongue-in-cheek. Some people in your life might think you’re cool because you stay on top of the new things happening online and they count on you to keep the coolness going so they can benefit from your coolness. Again, t-i-c. Thanks for letting me indulge.

Using Social Networks for Your Blog

Another context you can benefit from using the social networking sites is building traffic to your blog, promoting your blog posts and gaining subscribers. People might click on your profile at a social site to find more about you. I know I do it and I subscribe to new blogs that I find interesting and valuable.

If you’re a commentor at blogs, you are engaging in a social network. Maybe for a while and maybe for a long time or maybe even sporadically. Who knows. And, if you’re interested in the responses to a certain blog post, you can subscribe to that blog post’s comments. Blog comments are a social network.

When you’re a new blogger, you’re taught to go find other blogs in your niche and comment. This gets you out there and involved with everyone else in your niche. It provides a sense of community by getting involved.

Remember, blog comments can be auto-emailed if you subscribe to them. There are also services to manage your comments at blogs. Like comment management, there are also services to manage the messages you send to social networking sites.

One way to blog, is to write a weeks worth of posts on the weekend and then time those blog posts to go out during the next week. While the blog posts are automatically being published for you, you can then spend a portion of your time during the week socializing on your social sites, including commenting at blogs and forums, etc.

Staying Organized When Using Social Networking Sites

What some folks ask is, “How do I keep up with all this socializing?” One way to start thinking about all these social sites is to not think about them. Just get them out of your head. But know that they exist and you have one place to go when you want to manage them.

If you’re a follower of Getting Things Done by David Allen or some derivative of GTD like LEO’s Zen to Done, you’ll know that getting things out of your head is one of the matras. If you join a social site or two you’ll have to manage it. “Shoot, another thing to think about. Geez!!”

One way to help is to use a Social Site Messenger or SSM for short (I just made that term up so don’t think it’s an industry standard). If you want to send a message to one social site or multiple social sites like Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Myspace, Tumblr, and on and on…, you could certainly use a service like Ping.fm (in beta), FeedTweeter or Posty. If you try Ping.fm you can use the beta code “pingbewithyou” without the quotes (as of 7/13/08).

A way to manage all those sites is to create a bunch of tabs in Firefox that all automatically log you in to the social networking sites you belong to. Then save all the tabs as a group like you can in Firefox 3 and when you need to visit each site, open your Firefox 3 browser and go to that bookmarked group and select “Open All in Tabs”. This will get you logged into your social networking sites as quickly as possible and allow you to efficiently work with them on a schedule.

Note: Keep in mind, if you use a service that sends one message to multiple social sites, those messages could show up in sites like FriendFeed and BlogCatalog. These sites have the capability to display messages from the other social sites that you belong to. So for example, you could see the same message multiple times on your FriendFeed account. Which isn’t too pretty.

It’s Just Not Right!!

Now, some folks might think sending one message to many social sites is not right because it shows that you’re not really involved with that site. Ultimately, you’ll want to spend some time at those sites if they are appropriate for what you’re doing with your blog or whatever reason it is for you to be involved in social networking sites.

Besides, if you equate social networking to going to church, the club, a monthly group that meets every Thursday night at the local restaurant, or any other gathering where people are for any topic that you’re interested in, you’re socializing in a network at multiple social networks.

The Value of Social Networks

The value in all this, whether sites come and go, is what you give and what you get from it all. Like a church or any other organization that you receive valuable information for free from, you also give of yourself to that organization as well. Like cleaning tables and plates at a church social function.

I wrote 21 Terrific Tweets to show just a small sampling of what you can get out of Twitter tweets. This was at a time where I had just started following folks on Twitter.

Others have connected with folks to do contract work.

Use Summize to extract data you’re interested in or want to keep an eye on.

New found friends that you actually call on the phone or send stuff to and from through snail mail.

Hooking up with someone clear across the world where you probably will never go but finding out more information about that place by the folks who live there and are also on the same social networks as you are.

One could certainly start a blog based on the information provided in tweets and Summize. It’s loaded with valuable information. Yes I know, “But Bill, you can find that information elsewhere.” I don’t know man, you can find a lot of stuff using the advanced search capabilities of Summize and in short order too.

Like any other non-virtual network, networks come and go. Give the value and take whatever value you get from it.

Social Networking and a Wrap-up on Mindset

So what’s the mindset when you’re using one of these services that sends one message to many social sites? Five points to help you with your social networks and not getting overwhelmed.

Don’t think about it, just get it out of your head so it doesn’t become a mantra of “I have to do this, I have to do that on this and that site.”

Social networks are like any other non-virtual network - church, clubs, restaurants, etc.

Send one message to multiple sites of your choice.

Visit your multiple social networking sites using one browser with multiple tabs.

Designate a time of the day and amount of time you spend at those sites just like commenting at blogs, forums, etc.

Use compete to keep an eye on the popularity factor of these social sites to help you decide what direction you’d like to go with social networking. Maybe you use all of them or maybe you use one or a few of them. Whatever you do, the moment you create it, manage it. Create the simplest management plan for that site that fits your processes and schedule.

As far as being cool, if you want to be on top of the Twitter action, then check out Twitscoop. Twitscoop:

Through an automated algorithm, twitscoop crawls hundreds of tweets every minute and extracts the words which are mentionned more often than usual. The result is displayed in a Tag Cloud, using the following rule: the hotter, the bigger… You can also input a twitter username in the search box to track a conversation.

I don’t think if these environments as a cool place to be. They are interesting to be involved in, to watch, and to watch which ones fall to the wayside over time. With help from TechCrunch, you can keep an eye on which ones join the infamous deadpool.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

In storytelling, be the teller and a listener

Recently for the 4th of July I visited my sister in Minnesota, USA, where, for a few nights, four families gathered around a campfire on a portion of 3 acres of land sprawled out over a hilly and tree-lined backyard. Neighbors separated by 2-3 acres of the same. Deer running through the yards once a day that stopped conversations and demanded everyone’s attention. Idyllic.

Kids under 10 years old, teenagers, boyfriends, girlfriends, adults. All circled around telling tales of present and past, embellishing every step of the way. Favorite stories repeated from uncles and aunts requested by the older kids, wanting to remember and hear it again from years past. Stories that brought new understanding because of time.

There was food and drink non-stop, making it difficult to stick to any kind of a low-fat diet. We played volleyball in the pool and imagined all those bad calories we consumed were going to fall off. Yea right.

The celebration ended with an extra night of fireworks and s’mores around the campfire. Great fun.

TweetDeck is a Twitter client that runs on your computer using Adobe AIR. It seems to be taking off in popularity and while they are designing it and taking input, I thought I’d write about a few things I would like to see and introduce you to TweetDeck as well.

Here are some TweetDeck features:

Is an Adobe Air application in public beta

Evolve the existing functionality of Twitter

Presents Twitter tweets in manageable bite sized pieces

Seperate columns to display all tweets, replies, direct messages, search results, and groups

Single profile views of someone with the days tweets from that person

Uses Summize as its search engine

A Twitter Status sits in the lower right-hand corner of the application letting you know the status of, Twitter.

Next update in the lower left-hand corner of the application letting you know when the next burst of tweets will be arriving in the All Tweets column.

A Timeframe slider bar allowing you to see tweets at different time intervals - 1 hour, 2 hours, up to 48 hours.

Other features described at the TweetDeck beta webpage

What I’d like to see:

An image box for images people would like to share via a link - like Plurk - pop-up a window if you’re running TweetDeck in single column viewing mode. If TweetDeck is running in full screen, show the image in a box in one of the available columns. Do the same thing with YouTube videos - again, kind of like Plurk.

At the top of the All Tweets column place a count of all new tweets that are waiting at the top of the column if the readers is not at the top of the column. Currently, when you’re reading half way down your list of tweets and new tweets come in, the scroll bar shoots you to the top of the All Tweets column. This is not cool and I’m sure the kind folks at TweetDeck are working on it.

Can the local database reside somewhere on the web when TweetDeck users are moving between multiple computers? Or maybe a synchronize feature. The local database allows you to tweet while offline (while Twitter is down) and catches up when twitter is available at a later time.

Provide a way to refresh tweets. If it’s there, I just don’t see it. Again, I’m sure something the developers won’t overlook.

Allow me to shut updates off. I could use this feature to catch up on tweets. Maybe provide predefined time intervals for updates.

Support all search parameters from Summize.

The folks over at TweetDeck are using uservoice to provide feedback. Uservoice is a website you can use to create feedback pages for your customers. It’s free during their public beta. Check that out as well.

That’s it for now. TweetDeck is coming along and I’m pretty much using it as my main Twitter application. It sits full screen on an extra 21-inch monitor.

Here are a few other blog posts about TweetDeck:

Twitter Needs Groups. TweetDeck Kinda Sorta Solves The Problem by Demo Girl

TweetDeck: A Different Twitter Client by ReadWriteWeb

Tweetdeck by freshAIRapps.com

If you feel cutting edge and you want to play a long, give TweetDeck a try. The beta feels pretty good and you’ll be part of the growth process of TweetDeck.
