Fun New Look?

Was bored this weekend and completely sick of the old look. That former template had been used by so many damn bloggers that it had run its course probably 8 months ago. This new one just has a fresher look, but it may also have some bugs that need to be worked out. I'll also have some tweaking to do as time goes on to make it fairly unique to the Sports Dollar, but please be patient. :)

One thing I'm noticing right away, is the top image/header not showing up completely. It definitely does appear to be working in IE...hopefully no one uses that shitty browser anyway.

So tell me what you think of the new look!

Make Money with Twitter - IZEA Launches Sponsored Tweets

Within the last day or so, IZEA launched a new money making program for Twitter which everyone should check out called "Sponsored Tweets." It really was only a matter of time before someone launched a service like this, and with IZEA, at least you know it'll be legit and not some shady link selling service.

Basically, the service looks at your Twitter account, decides a price that you should charge to tweet whatever sponsors want, and then automatically tweets it once you've accepted.

The sign-up goes something like this:

1. Sign up by allowing their application to access your Twitter account.
2. Choose a few simple settings.
3. Wait for advertisers to contact you.

It seriously took me 45 seconds to sign up with two different accounts. Plus, it doesn't ask for social security number or address or phone or any of that other obnoxious crap that affiliates usually ask for.

Once you've allowed their application access, they give you an estimate of how much you should charge per tweet and per click but also allow you to set whatever price you want. The algorithm apparently bases its price on how many actual followers you have which makes sense.

Advertisers will be allowed to sign-up within the next few days, but there are rumors of people already receiving offers so it's worth checking into right now.

Picad Media - In-Picture Advertising is Quite the Concept

A month or so ago, I was approached by a new PPC advertising company called Picad Media. They pitched me a new advertising technology called "In-Picture Advertising" which sounds interesting enough right? So I gave it a try...

The service is actually a pretty ingenious idea allowing small google-esque ads to be placed onto any image you choose throughout your site. Basically, when you hover over an image on any of our pages, you should see a little advertisement in the bottom. (Go do it now!)

They also promised us some pretty high payouts on clicks! That always sounds good in theory, but with a new compnay sometimes you just never know.

After testing the easy installable script onto our body section, we let the service roll to see what kinds of profits we could actually make. Well, the returns were not super great, and who knows why. Here are a few questions we asked ourselves:

Is this idea too ahead of its time?
Are the ads annoying when you go to click on a picture?
Are the ads just not easily seen?
Who actually hovers over pictures anyway?
Were our sites not necessarily the picture clicking type?
Does the service just suck?

Whatever the case may be, I still like the idea of it. Like I mentioned earlier, it was a simple script that just took right over your images, but also allowed you to pick and choose if you'd like. The reporting features on their site were not our favorite and we never really knew how up-to-date they were.

The service still appears to be in "beta" status, so I suggest you go check them out and apply to their beta program. Maybe your site is an image monster and will just kill it with clicks.

UberTwitter = Uber Pimp

OK, I dare someone to find me a better BlackBerry Twitter application than UberTwitter!

This thing is seriously the most ridiculous Twitter app ever for the BB! I was wasting my time for a solid 3 months now with TwitterBerry and BBTweet. Why didn't someone tell me about this damn app long ago?

Let me just break this down for a second:

Allows "retweets"
Interacts with your camera and photos with ease
Is a location machine
Allows you to check out tweets of people near you
Plants your location on your tweets if you choose
Allows you to search Twitter
See trending topics
Copy tweets

It is absolutely fantastic. Anyone else with a BlackBerry not using UberTwitter?

Our 3 Favorite Twitter Clients/Apps/Whatever...

If you still aren't using Twitter, boil some water, throw a pot of noodles in it, and allow your significant other to lash the hell out of you for the next 15 minutes. Not only has it taken the internet by storm, but it has also taken the damn sports world by storm and has become a daily fixture in the life of bloggers and athletes alike.

There will be a ton of Twitter posts to come in the near future, but we thought we'd start off with the 3 Twitter applications we use throughout our, oh so busy day of spamming the Portland Trail Blazers masses.

Twitterberry

This bad boy allows us to be mobile wannabe sports blogging moguls. Not only does it look sexy on your phone, but athletes like Shaq have dissed the iPhone to jump onto Twitterberry. And if that doesn't work for you, try holding up the phone extra high at the club Friday night so the ladies can see the little blue birdy tweeting around on the BB.

TwitterFox

I have a hell of a time with messaging programs or any of those all-in-one social media machines, so I use TwitterFox. It's an add-in to Firefox that sits in the bottom corner of your browser and constantly updates so you can quickly check on the latest Twitpic's from the self-absorbed. It runs light, updates at different intervals and overall is a nice app.

This little gadget allows me to continue tweeting throughout the day while at work without wasting text messages on my phone and getting caught by the man. Our little friend known as iGoogle uses this Twitter app and so far remains unblocked from my religulously related healthcare internet firewall. A must have for sure.

Text-Link-Ads Manual Submit

At some point, we all decided to check out the evil-text-link-stepchild, also known as Text-Link-Ads to try and snag a couple of extra dollars for our sports blog or 888 betting website. And then right after we did that, we wondered why our website’s PageRank took an instantaneous dip towards the gutter. Well, if you had done 1 Google search worth of research on this money making machine, you would have realized Google severely penalizes just about anyone for using the service. Remember, Google loves limiting our income potential!

In order for Text-Link-Ads to work, you needed to install a “feed” into your site which would be populated with any inventory that TLA sold for you. The process was automatic and there was virtually no upkeep, but the issue with Google hating you for using it remained. So TLA is offering a new service which should help you to sell text links but also hide a little from big brother, Google.

TLA now offers you the opportunity to manually install text links when an advertiser loves you. This way, you can drop your ad into that “resource center” or other sneaky widget you’ve made especially for those text links.

Here are the steps to follow in this program:

You will receive email notifications when an ad is purchased from your site. To verify you are placing it on the correct page, TLA will spider immediately.
If you do not place the ad within 3 days, it will be automatically cancelled. Also, if you do not approve/decline an ad 3 times, you’re inventory will be removed from the service.
Instructions for the ad will be included so you know exactly what is going down and whether it is a betting site something else related to your material.

Any questions? Pretty simple…and it’s about damn time they started this.

Unless You Created that Video, Stop Acting Like it's "Yours"

An interesting trend, which has been touched on before, has sort of taken an interesting turn over the last couple of weeks. You see, there is this culture of bloggers that basically run an entire blog made up of other people’s videos. It could be a commercial that a major company has posted to YouTube, or a video cap of a game highlight, or even an old video that some kid found at home and converted into digital format for internet-goers. I think I’ve shared my feelings on this type of blogger in the past, but lately, some of the chatter around it has really gotten under my skin.

It has almost become a competition for people to post the latest and greatest commercial from Nike, Gatorade, etc. If a blogger is lucky enough to find the video “first”, then a little research is done to see if anyone else has posted the video. If indeed he/she is the first, then the blogger spams out his/her “find” to all major blogging outlets in hopes of gaining links and traffic. (There are obvious ethical issues with this facet of video blogging as well, but we’ll save those for another day.)

So here is the latest interesting scenario…

Blogger #1 “finds” (not creates) this video and spams it to the world. Fine. And as the links start to roll in, they become extremely happy for essentially doing nothing. OK. And then blogger #2 comes along, “finds” the video just as the blogger #1 did and posts it to their own blog. No link or credit is given out as the video was found on YouTube or you know what, who cares where it was found. Bottom line is that they found it on the internet just like blogger #1 did.

Now, blogger #1 finds out that the video was posted and since they think they were “first” to post it that they deserve some sort of credit for it and are now upset! Wait what? Yes, you read that correctly. And then posts to friends start about blogger #2 stealing “their videos” and not “linking back” and yada, yada, yada.

Does anyone else see anything completely ridiculous and wrong with blogger #1? Let’s break this down…

You “found” someone else’s video. FOUND it. F-O-U-N-D it. (Insert hand signals here) Then posted this other person’s video like it was your own. Spread it to the world like you have some sort of stake in the video. And then became upset when someone else in the entire World Wide Web, decided to post it without giving you a link back. W…T…F is wrong with you blogger #1? With all of the millions of visitors that sites like YouTube receive each day, you actually had the balls to claim some other person’s video as yours?

My final thoughts…

If you didn’t create the video, stop treating it like it’s yours.
If you didn’t create the video, stop spamming it to the world expecting returns.
If you didn’t create the video, buy a DVR/Tuner or video capping software.

If you didn’t create the video, IT’S NOT YOURS.

***Update***

I just want to be clear that I don't picture video bloggers as some kind of weird alien species that performs evil tests on babies, but I do think some of them need to chill waaaaaaaay the hell out and start becoming creative.

Super Bowl XLIII Drinking Game!

Who doesn't love those yearly Super Bowl Drinking Games? Super Bowl XLIII Sunday approaches and that means your ridiculous party should be on mind as well as those timeless drinking games. Of course this year we have the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. the Arizona Cardinals which is a fantastic match-up in itself on the field, but off the field it will help you get incredibly drunk! And fat!

Chug your beer…

1. Every time Kurt Warner and Hall of Famer are mentioned together.
2. Every time an Bill Cowher is mentioned.
3. Every time Vince Lombardi’s name is brought up.
4. Every time the Steelers defense is mentioned as one the best ever.
5. Every time you hear a player is giving it “110%“!
6. Every time Larry Fitzgerald makes a ridiculous catch.
7. Every time your buddy says “that commercial sucked/was lame/stupid.”
8. Every time you see a Gatorade commercial.
9. Every time you see a Budweiser commercial.
10. Every time you are happy that Bryant Gumbel is NOT announcing the game.
11. Every time Kurt Warner gets sacked.
12. Every time Ben Roethlisberger breaks a tackle in the pocket.
13. Every time Hines Ward's injury is mentioned.
14. Every time a new dot com company is unveiled in a commercial.
15. Every time they show video of Anquan Boldin walking off the field.
16. Every time Obama is referenced for picking the Steelers.
17. Every time you see a commercial for another worthless NBC sitcom.
18. Every time a team goes 3 and out or fails to get a first down.
19. Every time the new "young" breed of coaches is mentioned.
20. Every time you are thankful for no Joe Buck.
21. Every time someone at your party uncomfortably high fives someone else.
22. Every time you pee after “breaking the seal.”
23. Every time a friend yells out “that was a horrible call!“
24. Every time a woman at your party reminds you that she only cares about the commercials.
25. Every time a player says “I’m going to DisneyLand!“

That should be enough to get you through the game or at least through the first quarter! And of course, depending on the level of alcoholic you are, you may need to adjust the amounts of each rule.

Doc's Sports - Super Bowl Predictions

The Super Bowl match-up has finally been set! The Steelers return to previous territory while the Cardinals enter unfamiliar. Who knows what the odds to win the super bowl are, but I do know that Doc's Sports has you covered.

I'm sure the rest of you are as excited as I am during this time of the year, but the storyline of Arizona and Kurt Warner coming through in dramatic fashion has made this all the better. And I am so damn glad it was Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh. How awful would that have been? The media coverage is obnoxious enough without the teams being from the same damn state. Either way, this should be one to remember. It could be a time for both quarterbacks to solidify their spots in the Hall of Fame.

And as a final reminder, whether it's for Super Bowl Odds or for Super Bowl Picks, Doc's Sports always brings the best to help ease your decision.

Sports Dollar's 2008 Year in Review

Most people like to write this post with just a few days remaining in the year, but we didn't want to just blend in with all the others during such an important period that we thought we'd wait until people were actually back to work click-clacking away.

It has been quite the year! We finished our first full year of blogging! Woo-freaking-hoo pimps! The road was long and treacherous but we managed and still actually kept our 8 to 5 even though half of our hours are likely spent rambling to all of you! Ultimately, the year couldn't have been better. We started 3 blogs, sold one, made some money with one and jump started another which looks to be a hit. What more could you ask for aside from Yahoo Sports asking us to write full-time? (Wishful thinking jerk-off!)

So our year-in-review will simply be a look back at some of our favorite posts that we felt actually helped our readers rather than just expanding our PayPal account.

The Beginning Stage:

1. We gave you our initial 100 fluffs to building a better sports blog!
2. Then popped out our most popular Google friendly post, with the top 5 Blogger template sites.
3. Possibly one of our more controversial pieces was the guide to BallHype.
4. And our first installment of the top 50 sports blogs!
5. We then warned you to stop spamming BallHype, Yardbarker and Digg.
6. And for some reason many of you ignored this one.
7. Entrecard came and went, but this was the ultimate guide to it. And part 2.

Another Early Stage:

1. We decided to have some fun with A Blogger is Like...
2. Then bid farewell to that f-ing Entrecard.
3. Asked you what your favorite tools were.
4. Introduced a sports blogging job board!
5. Cuzzy gave you his 25 traits to being successful in part 1 and part 2.
6. Reminded you that BlogBurst was pretty sweet during the NBA Playoffs.
7. Then slapped you with 80 more tips to better your sports blog!

A Turning Point:

1. Our first and only blog income report!
2. For some reason, used Entrecard again...
3. And then sold our baby. :(
4. But had a ton of fun telling you how annoying your blog was!
5. And then talked about the absurd crap all of us do as bloggers.
6. The second quarter Top 50 sports blogs were released!
7. Decided to follow Google's Logo updates during the Olympics.

A Long Stretch:

1. Ran another big ass contest...it was pretty big and sexy too.
2. Talked about the 6 types of sports bloggers which was a huge hit.
3. Called McCain an idiot for his Palin choice, and of course, we were right.
4. Covered the 7 deadly sins of all sports bloggers.
5. Found ourselves being thankful sports bloggers hadn't adopted some things.
6. Loved this guest post from Apryl Delancey.
7. Brought out the drinker in bloggers by asking what kind of cocktail you are.

Bringing it Home:

1. Reminded you again to stop spamming your stories on social networking sites.
2. Then told you to be careful when submitting someone elses.
3. The third quarter top 50 sports blogs!
4. Also told you to not be a "nofollow" douche.
5. Realized that NFL Power Rankings were a Google gold mine.
6. Welcomed in our new baby!
7. Put together a list for the newbies in the sports blogging world.

The End:

1. Gave you this video looooooooong before anyone else.
2. Watched our Alexa ranking dominate the 100K mark.
3. Compared sports blogs to hotties.
4. And then we cashed out Adsense for the first time.
5. Finished off the year holding it down with our PageRank.

What a year...as I just looked back through posts, I'm having trouble believing this little blog pumped out 400+ posts!

A giant thanks to everyone that has continued to read this goofy little experimental blog of ours. It was an incredible year that wouldn't have been complete without you all calling me out on my ridiculous NFL rankings and feeding me all the current news from around the blog-o-sphere.

No promises will be made going into 2009, but I'm hoping to re-vamp the site and sort of take it in a new direction. Trust me on this, you can only talk about sports blog marketing for so long!

ESPN.com Completes Overhaul?

Starting promptly at 9 PM PST, ESPN.com completed an overhaul and gave you a brand spanking new look.

What do you think?

My initial impressions weren't all that positive after finding myself really getting used to the previous version. ESPN offers so much information on their site that you almost have to learn to use it like some sort of internet geek tool. So the new version seems to immediately be missing some of my favorite assets.

For example, if you head to the NBA page, you are missing the "+more" link which would give you even more information like rumors, photos, and other random garbage that only NBA-fanboys like myself actually looked at.

Obviously there will be bugs and other annoyances that they'll be figuring out over the coming days...should be cool in the long run though! Welcome to 2009 ESPN!

Doc's Sports - Your Spot for NFL Playoffs

As the NFL Playoffs are just around the corner (tomorrow), Doc's Sports should be one of the first places you stop. To print off NFL Playoff Brackets or to check out the latest NFL Playoff Predictions make sure to head over there immediately.

This weekend's games should prove to be just as entertaining as the entire season has been especially with these Wild Card match-ups. After glancing at all four, I can't with any certainty, actually pick winners and feel good about them. Maybe Indie? Who knows really?

After this weekend, things will start getting even dirtier as all those top seeds come off of a long break and are hoping to be completely healed. This is one of those post seasons that I can't wait to get started watching.

Google has given many of us a nice New Year's present by dishing out the last PageRanks of 2008. Assuming that all of the PR's have gone through, it looks like the Sports Dollar stayed put at a PR 4 while our other new venture, Blaze of Love was given its first PR, a 4!

We've read the many rumors on how to increase your PR and who knows what really to believe. All I know, is that we've done pretty well with PageRanks over the year including an opening PR 5 on our old site Le Basketbawl.

Any personal theories as to what affected your PageRank over the last quarter?

End of the Year NFL Power Rankings

After taking most of the 2008 season and giving you our weekly power rankings, we thought we should give you our year end rankings as well.

Since we received the more than solid package from Nick at ImWritingSports.com today, it reminded us of the other package we received a couple of weeks ago from our major sponsor BetUS.

I wanted to give a big shout out to Nick over at IWS (www.imwritingsports.com) for sending us a CC Sabathia signed ball as well as an IWS t-shirt!

We entered into a contest of Nick's earlier in the year and this was the prize we won! A huge thanks goes to him on this one though as his sponsor backed out at the last minute right before he was shelling out prizes and had to spend some of his own cash to make sure everyone got their stuff. Pretty cool, I'd say. Thanks Nick!
