What a way to end the baseball season, unless you are a Red Sox or Braves fan. You could not script a better ending and it is the reason I love sports. There is no better reality TV. I'll look back at what happened in Atlanta, Tampa and Baltimore with each game coming down to the final at bat, and the rest of the games that effected playoff teams. Plus a look at the playoffs and the season awards. Enjoy.

Second weekend of the season saw a couple of upsets, but mostly what it did was seem to put almost the whole league at 1-1. What we are seeing is a ton of offense. When will the defenses start to catch up, or are we at the start of a record setting offensive year? Enjoy.

The NFL season starts tomorrow night with a match-up of the last two Super Bowl champions, when the Saints visit the Packers. After a summer of lockout talk, it is great to have real football so close. So, who will emerge from the 2011 season and become the champions. My pick is for the Packers to repeat adn I'll discuss why and who I think will join them in the playoffs. Enjoy.

Mark Sanchez spoke to GQ Magazine and did another photo shoot for the magazine. Biggest noise from the piece was Sanchez saying that he wanted to fight his coach when there was talk of his benching late last year. I think it's time for Sanchez to keep quiet and take the next step towards being a better quarterback in the NFL. Plus that new kickoff rule is not going over so well with the player and the coaches.

Adam Scott won the World Golf Championship at Firestone CC and after the win, his caddie, Steve Williams, was interviewed by CBS. Well, from listening to Williams, you would not know he actually was the caddie and his golfer won the event. After defending him two weeks ago, now I need to knock Williams down a few pegs and hope he let's Scott be the star of this pairing.

Quietly Jim Thome hit his 600th career home run and that's too bad, because Thome's numbers should be more celebrated, but have been tapped down due to the steriods era. Plus some are questioning if he is a Hall of Famer and that should not be much of an arguement. Plus a look at Logan Morrison's demotion to AAA by the Florida Marlins.

Does it matter if the Red Sox or the Yankees win the AL East, while the other is the wildcard? In the current format, no, but what if the division winner got a few days off, while the wildcard team had to face a second wildcard team in a one or even three game playoff? Would you be excited. I throw out a couple of ideas for adding another playoff team and also take a look at the nice battle brewing for the AL Cy Young Award.

Keegan Bradley won the PGA Championship in a playoff over Jason Dufner. Who and who? While some, maybe most, were disappointed in the no-names atop the leaderboard and eventually in the playoff, I thought it was exciting golf, despite the lack of star power on the leaderboard. Also, did you think it could get this bad for Tiger?

The NFL lockout is over and in the end both sides seems to get some winnings to boast about to all. Fans can now breath a sigh of relief and get those fantasy draft lists ready. Day to day NFL workers, not in pads, can get their jobs and paychecks back. We'll take a quick look at the settlement and what is there that fans will notice and maybe not notice.

Tiger Woods, in cleaning house and trying to start over, fired his caddie of 12 years Steve Williams and Williams isn't happy about it. In an interview Williams stated he was upset with the troubles Tiger got into, disapproved of those troubles and said so to Tiger. Some are saying Williams should just be quiet and count the money he earned because of Tiger. Why does Williams getting rich because of Tiger mean he must lose his moral compass?

Why do we treat our women's teams with kid gloves when they lose, when if the same thing happened to a men's team, the pundits would have a field day. Bryant Gumbel pointed this out in wondering about the "it's OK attitude" towards the Women's World Cup team in its loss to Japan. Know what? He is right and its not just with this soccer team, but in all women's sports. The women deserve better.

So now the Oregon Ducks football program has caught the NCAA's eye after a story has surfaced about possible violations revolving around a scouting service. I don't care about the allegations as much as I want to see how Oregon's staff handles it. Will Coach Chip Kelly learn from the Jim Tressell mess at Ohio State and make sure he holds nothing back? Also, Bruce Pearl tries to explain those "couple of misstated answers" he gave to the NCAA.

The NBA has now joined the NFL in locking out its players because of a labor dispute. As always, the arguements are over how to split each leagues' revenue. That is the similarity between the two disputes and it ends there. How both are beign negotiated and eventually settled, will be as different as night and day.

It is a sad day for this Dodger fan when I saw the news about Frank McCourt putting the Dodgers through bankruptcy proceedings. One of baseball's and all of sports' storied franchises is at its lowest point in existance. How long before the shine is back on the Dodger Diamond?

Rory McIlroy is a record setting 11 under par after the first two rounds of the US Open. Didn't we see this back in April at Augusta? Can he keep it up this weekend, or will Congressional and the Open pressure bring him back to earth? The Boston Bruins captured their first Stanley Cup since 1972 with a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks. While Tim Thomas was outstanding and will get much deserved praise, Roberto Luongo will be facing many questions about his "playing small" when it was on the line. In the end in was a great hockey playoff, which hopefully will bring a few new fans to the sport.

The Boston Bruins forced a Game 7 in these Stanley Cup Finals, where the first six games have been won by the home team in completely different fashion. Will the pattern continue for Game 7 in Vancouver? Will Roberto Luongo again bounce back after the debacle in Boston or do the Bruins break through and win on Vancouver's home ice? Also, did I really hear someone suggest that Miami should consider breaking up this Heat team?

The Dallas Mavericks are the new NBA Champions and showed everyone that they were not the same old Mavericks from prior playoff disappointments. While most are saying the Heat lost, I want to give props to the Mavericks for their well deserved victory. Also, tonight is Game 6 in Boston for this Jeckyl and Hyde Stanley Cup Final.

The Dallas Mavericks are one victory away from the first NBA Championship after beating the Miami Heat 112-103 last night in Game 5, but all that is being talked about is the failure of LeBron James in the last two fourth quarters and how James will never be "like Mike". What will be said if the Heat win the next two games and he scores 40 in each? That he is Jordan? Ridiculous.

So there will be no Tiger Woods at this year's US Open as he says he will listen to his doctor and rest his ailing left knee and Achilles. Will these injuries haunt Tiger for the rest of his career? The Miami Heat took control of the NBA Finals by winning last night's Game 3 in Dallas. Now the Mavericks have the tough task of winning the next two before heading back to Miami. Over in the NHL Finals, the Vancouver Canucks won the first two on their home ice and look to be cruising to their first championship unless Boston can somehow find the back of the net.

I'll admit to thinking the NBA Finals were probably over when Miami had a 15 point lead, but this Dallas team again showed heart we have not seen in prior playoffs. Now we have a series heading back to Dallas for the next three games. Plus the first game of the Stanley Cup finals was great, but a bite highlighted the coverage.

Bad year for the NCAA with Reggie Bush / USC, Cam Newton allegations and now the mess at Ohio State. That's just football and does not cover basketball. So Coach Jim Tressel is out at Ohio State and not as much for what his players did, but for his cover-up of the initial incident and false statements that came since "Tattoo Gate" became public. Now comes word that Terrelle Pryor will also leave the school. What a mess that didn't have to be. Plus the NBA Finals start tonight and the NHL Finals kick off tomorrow night.

BYU suspended its center, Brandon Davies, for violating the school's honor code and more people seemed to question the code itself and the school's thinking in damaging their chances at an NCAA Championship, than applauded BYU for showing the integrity to do the right thing and ignoring what his suspension would mean to the basketball team. We'll look at the BYU decision and why I wish more people/teams/schools would follow their lead. Plus a look around the other sport stories of the week. Enjoy.

The Carmelo Anthony to the New York Knicks trade this week just added strength to the top third of the NBA and has really set the balance of the league on it side. While some think it is good for the league to only have a few elite teams in the big markets, I think it is a recipe for disaster. With a CBA battle on the horizon, I look at why these type of moves are not good for the league and what they could do to rectify it. Enjoy.

The Packers and Steelers gave us a great and exciting game with Green Bay finishing up on top 31-25 with their defense stopping Pittsburgh from driving for the winning TD. At the end, we are left with the Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the Super Bowl 45 crown. Last week divisional rivals met in the AFC playoffs, while the NFC had rematches from the regular season. For the Championship games, it has flipped as the AFC game is a rematch from week 16 with New York going to Pittsburgh, while over in the NFC, it is the third game of NFC North rivals when the Green Bay visits Chicago. We have seen #1 seeds go down in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs, but not both top seeds in such convincing fashion. Aaron Rodgers had one of the best games ever by a playoff quarterback, while the Jet defense played the perfect game against the high scoring Patriot offense. Meanwhile the Steelers had a great second half in beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens. Then in Chicago, the Bears looked like a team off a bye week playing an inferior opponent in rolling the Seahawks. Mike joins me to go over the weekend's action and breakdown the games. Enjoy.

On Sunday, four NFL games were determined on the last play of the game (led by the Eagles comback over the Giants), while a few others were still up for grabs with a minute or so to go and all had some playoff implication attached to them. As the baseball world was waiting for Cliff Lee to decide between the Yankees or Rangers, Lee threw the best curveball of his career and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Just a big "Wow!". After 297 straight starts in the regular season, Brett Favre was finally forced to miss a game. It has been a great run, one that started in 1992, and when we see all the players missing time each and every season, it just makes it even more amazing. As for the games on the field, the Patriots didn't suffer a letdown, but it looks like the Jets did. The Chiefs and Packers show they really need their starting QBs and it looks for sure like a team with a losing record will win the NFC West. Enjoy.

While the NFL is king this time of the year, there are other sports and news from those sports going on at this same time. The Heisman Trophy was awarded to Cam Newton while the college football fans wonder if he will keep it. Urban Meyer leaves the Florida Gators and this time means it. The NBA and NHL are both over past the quarter-pole of their regular seasons and we are starting to see a few trends developing. How much money did Jason Werth get? Yikes. Guess the agents for Cliff Lee and Carl Crawford are happy, while the teams pursuing them need to find some more cash. I have been down on the Jets this year, despite their 9-3 record, but no way did I see a 42 point beating happening. Question is, how did the Jets let this happen? I'll look back at the action from week 13 and look at the playoff possibilities as teams play their final four games, many of which are match-ups between many of these playoff contenders. Also, while all the attention was on the AFC early in the year, the NFC has moved up to the NFL big boys' table. Enjoy.

LeBron James' return to Cleveland did not play out anything like Cavalier and Cleveland sport fans wanted it to and was probably the worst scenario possible. Blowout Heat win, James scoring 38 and seeing his former teammates joking with him has to feel like a punch in the gut to Cavs' fans. I'll give my impressions of "The Return" and the spotlight around it. Also last night, the Eagles and Michael Vick needed a 4th quarter comeback to beat the Houston Texans, and the NCAA says Cam Newton won't be punished for his dad, Cecil Newton's mistakes. Think Reggie Bush and USC raised an eyebrow? Enjoy.

Ten games down for each of the NFL teams and we still don't have a team that we can point to and say they are the best of the bunch. Know what? It's ok as we have many good teams and that will make these last six weeks of games very entertaining for those of us who like jockeying of teams as the playoffs get near. We might get a little better feel of the NFC teams with the Packer / Falcon and Eagle / Bear match-ups this weeks. As for week 11, how great is it when the Colts and Patriots get together and did we see the last meaningful game that involved Brett Favre? Enjoy.

NASCAR must wish the calender said 2005, instead of 2010 as they have the last race of the season with its 4 time champion, Jimmie Johnson, chasing the upstart in Denny Hamlin, while Kevin Harvick sits behind both of them with a chance to win it all and nobody is noticing the excitement. Well, I'm noticing (albeit late in the season) and will look at the final race for the NASCAR championship. Plus there will be college football games in both Yankee Stadium and Wrigley Field this Saturday and a look at the awards given out so far this baseball off-season. Enjoy.

The NFL is back on track as the bye weeks are done and all teams have now played the same amount of games. One thing that has been proven this year is that anytime you think you have a grasp on what is going on with the teams and the league, the Sunday games get played and you are left scratching your head. The hammer finally fell of Wade Phillips and after that atrocious effort on Sunday night, he just had to go as Jerry Jones could not fire all the players mid-season. In the same division we might have the two best NFC teams with the Eagles and Giants, while the Falcons just keep on winning. In the AFC there are many good teams and it looks like a fun second half of the season as these teams play each other and work out their "slots" in the hierarchy. I'll take a look back at week 9 and look forward to the week 10 schedule. Enjoy.

Florida State kept their top women soccer players home and did not send them to the ACC Tournament because they wanted to be fresh for the NCAA Championship. It cost them money and a scolding from the ACC "higher-ups", but I wonder in the big picture if FSU was wrong in their thinking and will other teams maybe do this, but maybe not in such blatant ways. Plus, I will admit that I have been just browsing the NASCAR races and the standing as they wrap up their season, but after yesterday's race in Texas they have gotten my attention. Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton got into a fight and Jimmie Johnson replaced his pit crew in the middle of the race. I'll take a look at what I have been missing this NASCAR season. Plus another college football weekend is in the books and the baseball free agency period started. Did you notice? Enjoy.

This NFL season has been as confusing as any I can remember and I am not sure if it we will see "normal" this year, or maybe this craziness is this year's "normal". The Ravens needing overtime to beat the winless Bills and giving up 30+ points in the process, while in New Orleans, the Saints lost to the Browns. I'll take a look back at week 7 and a glance forward at week 8. Plus tonight is Game 1 of the World Series between the Rangers and Giants. Josh Luchs tells us he decided to open up to Sports Illustrated so that his reputation was not defined by his suspension of his agent's license. He seems to be sweeping under the rug his 20 years of breaking rules and feels he did right to provide for his family. After reading his account, I come away with a much different feeling as to why he told his story. Plus for the second straight week the top college team lost as Ohio State fell to Wisconsin and now it's Oregon's turn at #1, while Boise St. just waits its turn for the big boys to fall. The Saints lose to a team with a free agent rookie starting at quarterback that does not score a running or passing touchdown? Tampa Bay comes back on the road against a Bengal team is getting terrible quarterbacking from Carson Palmer. The Raiders block two punts and hand another loss to the Chargers, while in Dallas, the Cowboys rack up over 500 yards, but still lose to the Titans and fall to 1-3. What is going on here in the NFL. So there is some life with the "Ol' Ball Coach", as Steve Spurrier coached his South Carolina Gamecocks to an upset victory over #1 Alabama. Ohio St. now takes the top spot, but will they be on top of next week's first BCS ranking? Anyone have Florida and USC losing again on consecutive Saturdays? I'll take a look at the college games from this weekend. Plus, the Yankees and Phillies have advanced after each swept their Divisional Sereis, but for me the Yankees advancing was a "yawn". Will anyone but Yankee fans care if they keep moving forward? Also, besides ratings for Fox, are the Yankees winning good for baseball? We'll explore. Enjoy.

Three weeks into the NFL season and we are left with only three undefeated teams (Pittsburgh, Kansas City and Chicago), and all three are quite the surprise. Another highly touted college quarterback shrunk when put in the spotlight, as Ryan Mallatt throws three intereceptions allowing Alabama to comeback and beat Arkansas. Saturday night, Michigan St. coach Mark Dantonio made a gutsy decision in calling for a fake field goal in overtime against Notre Dame. The play worked, MSU won and Dantonio was a hero. Two hours later he was in the hospital after suffering a heart attack. This comes nine months after Urban Meyer's collapsed following the SEC Championship game. What is going on here and is it all worth it? I'll give my thoughts about coaches and the health scares that have occured. Plus, I'll look at some of the college action from the weekend.

Last week Boise St. was set-up to make the BCS Championship game after their thrilling victory over Virginia Tech. Fast forward to today and the Broncos are no longer BCS darlings after not playing this week and Virginia Tech losing to James Madison at home. Huh? Makes no sense and that's what makes the BCS and also pre-season polls ridiculous. The NBA got much exposure this off season with the free agent movement this "Summer of LeBron". Well it seems the league owners are not fans of the player movement (Didn't these same owners offer these contracts?) and the "trade me" talk from other players. A NY Times story talks about greater financial punishment for players leaving their current teams. That will easily be a new CBA talking point. Can the league really try to restrict movement even more? I'll take a quick look at this new development. Plus, the NFL preseason ends Thursday night, so I'll look around the NFL camps, including an expensive mistake for the Cincinnati Bengals and see what is happening around Major League Baseball. When NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell wants something, he usually gets it, and although not a done deal, it sure does look like the NFL will start playing 18 regular season games starting with the 2012 season. Putting aside whether this is good or not for the league, it sure will have an effect on the other sports and television schedules / viewing. I'll take a look at those effects. Plus, Stephen Strasburg will be needing Tommy John surgery, and while this is bad news, it is not terrible news. Also, Tiger comes back to the pack at The Barclays, Payton Manning doesn't like a new NFL rule, Albert Pujols hits home run number 400 of his career and Pete Rose is giving Roger Clemens advice. It has been 73 years since a National League player has won baseball's Triple Crown and with 35 games to go we have two players, the Reds' Joey Votto and the Cardinals' Albert Pujols, with a shot at it and to add to the excitement their teams are battling for the Central Division crown. Sadly though you wouldn't know it unless you are a baseball fan. Will the chase get more play with only twenty games to go, or because it involves Cincinnati and St. Louis and not New York, Los Angeles or Boston, will this get lost until it actually happens at season's end? Plus, thanks to others the Blue Jays' Jose Bautista is guilty until he proves his innocence, Notre Dame wants to cut commercials from its games and Jim Furyk needs a better alarm clock. Enjoy.

The NHL held a "rules camp" where they experimented with some of the rules to make the game better. While none of them were "game changers", I did like some of the ideas that were discussed. I'll take a look at what is being thought about to make hockey even better for players and the fans.

Plus, Tiger and Elin are now officially divorced and there is some rumbling around golf that Tiger Woods might dismiss Steve Williams from being his caddie. If it is true, why do this now and by doing it now is Tiger saying Williams is part of the reason for his poor play or maybe he wants a clean slate? Also it was another fun time watching the Jets on "Hard Knocks" and more from the NFL and MLB. Enjoy.

Roger Clemens threw many "purpose pitches" during his career, but on Wednesday afternoon the Federal Government threw one at Clemens when he was indicted on charges of lying to Congress in 2008. I'll look at the baseball and public sides of this newest black eye for baseball. Plus it has been an eventful week of other sports news with Brett Favre returning to the Vikings with the help of some friends, Lou Piniella's immediate retirement, Kyle Busch pulling off a NASCAR "first" and don't wear a Gators cap to a Razorback press conference. Finally watched the first episode of this year's HBO series Hard Knocks and so far it sure showing differently than the prior years, especially after last year with the Cincinnati Bengals. Rex Ryan sure is the star of this team and it was put front stage during the first show. I'll give my impressions of the Jets TV time, plus discuss what rules hockey is looking at changing, and how the Texas Rangers new ownership is showing fans they are different than prior ownership. Also, we may see less Peyton Manning next spring. Enjoy.

What a way to end a major golf championship. Dustin Johnson's "penalty" costs him two shots and a chance at the PGA Championship. While the ruling was correct, the whole situation brings up many questions and observations about golf rules, what the players should know and if anyone should have "helped" Johnson. All that and no talk about the actual tournament. I'll look at this weekend's PGA, plus the happenings around baseball, including Twins' pitcher Kevin Slowey leaving a game with a no-hitter in place, and the pre-season football action. Enjoy.

So Tiger Woods was in the golf news again this week, but it had nothing to do with his words or actions. Instead it was the "he said / he said", finger in the chest confrontation between US Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin and Golf Channel reporter Jim Gray about Tiger's spot on this year's US Ryder Cup team. Who ever thought a golf news conference could turn into the WWE? Plus I'll take a look at the latest news from the other major sports and why more girls will probably watch the NFL Kickoff event. At 12:01am the latest version of Madden Football was released, and like I have done the past ten years or so, I was out being one of the first to get it in my hands. Well, I put the controller down long enough to catch up with Mike about what is going on around the sports world. Some of what we talk about is Ilya Kovalchuk's voided contract being upheld, Tiger Woods place on the Ryder Cup, the Miami Heat's "buzz" and some MLB & NFL news. Enjoy.
