The Joplin Tomorrow Fund is a foundation in Joplin, Missouri, that hopes to raise $10 million to kickstart local business growth in the Joplin area that was so devastated by a killer tornado several months ago.  The fund will provide low-and-no interest loans to businesses hoping to relocate to the Joplin area.  Five local business leaders are serving on the Board of Directors and the fund will work closely with the Chamber of Commerce to raise money.

The word “transmission” means the act of transmitting something or the act or process of transmitting.  The word comes from the Latin word transmissio which means “a sending across,” and that is a fairly good description of what a car transmission does.  It in fact transmits power from the engine of the vehicle to the drive axle.  Why is this necessary?

Let’s use an example that most people can understand.  Most of you out there have ridden a bicycle.  Well most bicycles have a series of gears and as you shift you are shifting the chain from one gear to another, making it easier to pedal the bicycle.  If you shift properly on a bicycle the amount of effort it takes your legs to pedal on a hill or a straight-away should not be different because the “effort” is being transmitted to the gears by shifting.  Essentially the same thing is happening in your vehicle when you shift gears.  The amount of power needed to start out from a standstill is different from the amount of power needed to travel at seventy miles per hour and your transmission (gearbox) is the little miracle worker that does the computations and makes the necessary changes in power transmission.

What is really amazing about modern car transmissions, whether manual transmissions or automatic transmissions, is that although they look terribly complicated they are really just a series of interconnected “simple” machines.  In basic science they talk about the simple machines as being the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, inclined plane, wedge and screw.  From those simple machines come combinations, or compound machines, and thus we have the transmission.  To most of us the car transmission looks quite complicated but to the pros at PDQ it is just a compound machine made up of simple parts.
