Benny's Many Faces

These are from our time at the lake, but I took so many, I thought they could just be in a post alone... Love this little face!

A trip to the lake

2013-08-07T22:33:00.002-04:00

We just got back from a visit with my fabulous Aunt Karen and Uncle John at their lake house. Because of distance, work schedules, etc., we don't get to seem them nearly as often as we would like. I've always admired my aunt and uncle because they're wonderful people. They're out to make the world a better place. What was really special to me this time, however, was watching my uncle interact with Benjamin. They are two peas in a pod.

Benjamin with Sophie.

When Jake and Lindsey are together in a photo, apparently rays of sun shine down from the heavens and the angels start singing. They're ridiculously beautiful.

Jake and Andy playing Mexican Train with Aunt Karen.

Such a beautiful view!

Benjamin loved being in the lake, even though the water was pretty cold!

Ben and his new best friend. Uncle John let him drive the boat!

Playing Bananagrams with Aunt Karen.

Superhero run!

Jake and Andy were pretty inseparable. You might wonder why I don't have many photos of Jacob from this trip. Well, he and Andy were pretty much off on their own doing 8/9-year-old boy things like playing video games and arguing over the rules of Star Wars Monopoly.

I regret not getting a good photo of this, but if you look very carefully, you can see Benjamin fishing with Uncle John on the dock.

Greg being attacked by wild dogs. I took photos.

The last night at the lake.... Benjamin was completely out during dinner.

The Runaway

2013-07-21T15:47:00.003-04:00

Most kids reach a point when they just can't take it anymore and they have to bail... Fortunately this usually happens when they're too young to do it well and are caught before they leave the house. I did it once in kindergarten. My dad caught me on the deck and gave me a heartfelt talk about how much he'd miss me. I ended up sobbing and never tried again. My brother attempted to go movie-style and tied sheets together and dropped them out the front window (note to kids: If you drop your escape line in front a the dining room window, you should probably not attempt to escape during dinner.).

Just yesterday afternoon, Greg and I were talking about how much Benjamin is like Greg's brother, Steve. (Bear with me.... it'll seem relevant in a minute.)

Benjamin loves helping. He is a great worker and quite handy around the house. Greg was working on the stairs yesterday and had an area of the floor that had construction dust and mess. Everywhere else was clean. He told Ben to avoid the messy area. Ben walked through it accidentally. Greg reminded him not to do that and to watch out. Apparently Benjamin was having a spacy day and did it a couple more times. Greg told him (a little more forcefully, but definitely not yelling) to stay away from the messy area. Benjamin ran upstairs.

A few minutes later, Greg told me Benjamin was upstairs crying. I went up there to check on him and saw him, with tears in his eyes, cramming stuffed animals into his backpack.

The mom part of me wanted to grab him, hug him, and just cuddle him for a long, long time. The other part struggled not to laugh and wondered:

* Would it be completely wrong to run downstairs and grab my camera?

I resisted, but it was hard. I had Greg come upstairs and he talked to Benjamin for a couple of minutes. I ended up holding him and cuddling him as much as he'd let me. I think when I "ran away," my thoughts were along the lines of, "They don't love me or want me" or "They don't understand me." I think Benjamin was just ticked off. He's a hot-headed little thing. He hugged me but wouldn't let Greg near him for a bit.

Oh.... and to tie Greg's brother in. He was their family's only runaway. :) Yet another thing Benjamin has in common with Uncle Steve.

A Cluster of Photos

2013-06-23T20:08:00.002-04:00

I'm hoping to actually start posting regularly again some time in the near future, but for now, here are a bunch of photos uploaded to my computer today...

Jake and Hannah, Arby's, and Estates

2012-11-13T19:39:00.000-05:00

When I picked Jacob up from school today, I thought he'd be in a great mood. I'd had a parent-teacher conference with his teacher, and she had only wonderful things to say about him. I told him about it and he seemed a little pleased, but was still in a rotten mood. At one point, he said, "Benjamin just makes my life more difficult." I told him that was a really mean, hurtful thing to say. I asked, "Wouldn't you feel horrible if something bad happened to him, like he got hurt?" He shrugged. And I wondered about my child and if he could possibly mean that.

And then.... a few minutes into it, a lightbulb lit up. Oh yeah.... Jacob gets like this when something else is bothering him. Duh.

"Um, Jake? Did something happen at school today?"

"No."

"Are you sure? Is something bothering you?"

Silence.

"Anything at all?"

Pause.

"Well, it's just that sometimes after we do our homework on the computers at BAC, Hannah wants to go outside and I don't always want to. And if I don't, then she gets really, really upset."

So then we talked about how it's okay to disagree. It's okay to not always want to do the same thing. It's okay as long as you're nice about it. I said sometimes it's also nice to do what the other person wants. He said he does do that. So then I said what Jacob often needs to hear most: "Disagreeing with her doesn't make you a bad person. You're a good kid. You're a nice kid. You're allowed to have different opinions."

And then he was magically better and decided Benjamin wasn't so bad after all.

*******************

So, Jacob took it to heart when I told him I really want to know when things bother him. I really do. His mind is always going 100 miles per hour. I'm guessing he enjoys video games so much because it's his time to just focus on ONE thing at a time. With his constant thinking and analyzing, he worries a lot.

On the way home, Jacob said, "When are we going to eat at Arby's again? I really like Arby's."

I said, "Oh, I don't know. It's not really very good and it's expensive for a fast food restaurant. We can spend just a little more and go to a regular restaurant."

Jacob said, "I really like their curly fries."

I said, "Yeah, they're pretty good."

A minute or two later, Jacob said, "When you say things like you don't like Arby's, I just feel like you're discounting my opinion."

He humbles me.

*******************

Oh, and one more little "Jacob" thing...

- His teacher said she was asking a group of them to guess a word that starts with "e" and means all of someone's property and what they own... And Jacob got it -- "estate." She was shocked.

Ben Can Read! and Jake is Jake

2012-10-08T21:53:00.001-04:00

Benjamin read a book! By himself! They're the "Mat and Sam" books... He read a couple of them gleefully to us. He likes to switch a word occasionally and then see if we notice... He'll read it and then pause and you can see his cheeks curve as he tries not to laugh....

Tonight at dinner we had to each choose a bird to be. Greg chose an albatross. Jacob said, "Did you know they can sleep while they're flying?" He has random trivia for everything!!!

Jacobisms...

2012-08-26T13:25:00.002-04:00

Just to document these so I don't forget them one day when Jacob's excelling in whatever field he chooses...

The other day we were in the car and Benjamin saw a truck with two scorpions on it.

Benjamin: "Look! It's a truck with two lobsters!"
Jacob: "Those aren't lobsters. Those are scorpions."
Me: "Jake, he's 4. They do look like lobsters."
Jacob: "Um, I guess... They do both have pincers and segmented bodies... but scorpions have a stinger and don't have antennae... they have hair for feelers."
Yep.

**************************

On the way home from school, Jacob said he wants to be a scientist when he grows up. Or an inventor. Like the guy who invented the telephone was a scientist and taught during the day but made inventions at night. He'd go to work all day, come home and sleep for a bit in between, and then invent at night. :-)

The first invention he was pondering was how to make real life light sabers. He said (I can't verify this because I don't pay attention) that in Star Wars, the light sabers work with an energy crystal stuck in a handle and the energy crystal is kind of magical and creates the light. He said maybe he could take a regular crystal, put it in a handle, and then add tons of tiny mirrors all angled in just the right way so the light (and then added, "Maybe an LED light") would bounce off of all the mirrors and create enough energy in the handle that light would shoot out.

He's 7.

When I was 9 or 10 we had to come up with an invention in school. The best I could come up with was a cloth-covered ice pack because ice in the bag by itself kind of stings. This was the best I could think of. And it wasn't until years later that I realized it wasn't even a new idea...

****************************

It's titled Jacobisms, but Benjamin pulled one out the other day.... He randomly asked us if 3 plus 4 plus 5 is 12. Well, that just stunned us a bit. :)

Jacob's First Concert!

2012-07-08T19:49:00.002-04:00

Greg and I absolutely love going to concerts. Love it. Not the big, screaming outdoor concerts packed with huge crowds and really well-known artists. Nope, we like the smaller venues with lesser-known groups. The ones most people haven't heard of. One of our favorite bands is Jukebox the Ghost. Jacob LOVES them. He passionately belts out the words to their songs. He'll sing the background music as well. When Jukebox announced a concert at totally crunchy, non-alcohol-serving venue, we decided this was the time. In case you don't know him well, Jacob is not your typical 7-year-old. We've been able to reason with him since he was two (or possibly younger). In a lot of ways (definitely not all), he's like a mini adult.

The concert was HOT. It was sweltering outside, and inside... it didn't feel like there was any air conditioning in the building. Being an old building with lots of tall, lovely stained glass windows, none of the windows opened. So, suffocatingly hot with no air circulation. We arrived at 7 and left at 11.... UGH.

But, Jacob loved it.

Fists!

Travis, Jacob, Chloe

Kid fists!

Before the concert started, the kids entertained themselves by making each other go cross-eyed.

The way to get meat in a vegan place? Order Jimmy John's! They're freaky fast!

Jesse setting up his drums.

I don't like to use flash much during the shows... I think it's somewhat rude. The people behind us had no problem taking 20 or so photos during a song, each one with flash.

Okay, so not a very good photo of Tommy, but we kind of stalker-snagged him as he came into the room and we had a huge crowd of teenage fans closing in on us...

Ben and Jake. After two hours of performing in a bajillion degree heat, he somehow doesn't look hot and sweaty. Must be the tank top.

And Jesse with Jake. He is the happiest drummer ever. Jacob was so impressed with him.

Jacob with his signed poster.

And... a late night Denny's run. Jacob could barely keep his eyes open, but he was hungry. While he was sleepily eating his food, I made him promise that he'll never decide it's not cool to hang out with his parents and that we'll always be concert buddies.

Teaching Mom a Lesson

2012-04-07T21:58:00.000-04:00

A few weeks ago (or maybe a month or two ago?), Jacob and I were in the drive-through at McDonalds. I guess I should back up a bit and start this by telling you a little about growing up as an asian person in a very un-asian community.

I haven't known many asian people. There just weren't many asian people around where I grew up, so it's possible I was one of the only asian people some of my classmates had met at that point in life. As a result, I've been told I look like just about any female asian person who has ever appeared on television. Kristi Yamaguchi? Connie Chung? Margaret Cho? Yes, yes, and yes. Do any of them look at all alike? Not in my opinion. Do I look like any of them? Not at all.

So back to McDonalds. Jacob watched the last season of The Sing Off with us. His favorite group was Afro Blue. As you can guess, most of the singers were black. As we approached the window, Jacob said, "That girl looks like a singer from Afro Blue!"

I looked. I saw no resemblance to any of the singers from Afro Blue.

Um.

Me: Why do you think that?

Jacob: Because she looks like a singer from Afro Blue.

Me: Um.... Are you saying that because they have a similar skin color?

Jacob: (Very patiently, the way you speak to someone who's a little slow...) No, I'm saying it because she looks like one of the singers from Afro Blue.

Me: (Still not seeing any resemblance at all) You know, sometimes people think people look alike just because two people might have something in common. Like people think Auntie Anne and I look alike because we're both asian. Do you think we look alike?

Jacob: No. (With a definite "duh" tone thrown in)

Me: Well, a lot of people do just because we're asian. A lot of people sometimes get confused when people have similar traits so they just decide they look the same. I was wondering if maybe you thought that about the person in the window.

Jacob: Mom. (A little exasperated by now) It doesn't matter. We are all part of the same big family. We are all God's children!

How do you respond to that? He definitely had me there. I should have known better.... I assumed he was only seeing color, which is something Jacob would never do. He is the most wonderfully color/size/status-blind kid ever. He truly only sees people. When Jacob's classmates occasionally make fun of or don't like another kid for reasons we as jaded adults see as obvious (not that we think it's right), Jacob is clueless about why the kids wouldn't like someone. He doesn't notice someone's weight, he doesn't notice someone's clothing, he doesn't notice if someone is "cool" or not. He forms his opinions based on how much fun someone is, if they're nice to him, and they only get bonus points for things like being able to talk Star Wars or knowing funny knock-knock jokes.

How did I end up with such a cool kid? He is such a good person. I hope he never changes!

Recently Heard Around the House....

2012-04-07T21:28:00.000-04:00

Jacob on 4/7/2012: The four types of germs are bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi.

Benjamin on 4/7/2012: It seems to me that these red cups have circle tops and square bottoms.

Jacob on 3/20/2012: I think I'm getting better at staring because I can stare for longer and the nerves in my eyes aren't screaming to my brain, "Give me water!!!"

Benjamin on 2/27/2012: Chicken is from chicken and ham is from hamskers.

Lying for a Cause

2012-03-09T13:44:00.000-05:00

Jacob's after school program at the YMCA is trying to raise money to help needy families. Jacob loves a good cause. He loves helping people and sharing what he has. He is a very generous little soul. He's interested in saving the planet, saving the world, and pretty much anything he hears about that will help someone. I love this guy.

So, the YMCA has a contest between the boys and girls to bring in dollars and coins. So, a couple of times a week, we'll give Jacob our change or a couple of dollars to bring in. Nothing special. One afternoon, the program director made a point of thanking me for our donation. I said, "Um, you're welcome?" Pretty confused. She said, "Did Jacob not tell you? I asked him four times if you'd say it was okay and he said yes." "Um...." Jacob had donated $40 that morning. She said, "I wasn't sure so I didn't turn it in and I can give it back. I'm so sorry!" I told her not to worry and that I'd talk with Greg and Jacob that night.

I got into the car and asked Jacob if he had anything he wanted to tell me.

Jake: Nope.

Me: Anything you might have lied about?

Jake: Nope.

Me: Ms. Catherine said you donated $40 this morning.

Jake: Well, it was in my wallet so I thought you put it there to donate!

Me: Jake, you know we didn't do that. You put it there and you hid it from us.

Jake: No, I just didn't remember it was in there, so when I saw it, I thought you had said it was okay to give to them.

Me: I think you're lying.

Jake: No, I'm really not! I really thought you said it was okay!
Me: We never talked about this. You're lying.

Jake: (silence)

Me: Jake, I love that you like helping people. I do. I know you're lying, though, and you can't lie to us.

Jake: (whispering) I know.

Me: Why would you lie to me and to Ms. Catherine? That's just awful!

Jake: Well, it's just that... When I gave them the money I just felt really good.

(ARGH! How are you supposed to punish that?!?!?)

Me: Okay, well, we'll talk about it at home. (We were in the car so I couldn't actually look at him.)

I tried to change the subject and asked how school was. I only got quiet, very sad, one-word replies. This kid is so good at breaking my heart.

When we got home, Jacob got out of the car, walked past Greg and Benjamin, and put himself in the time out chair. I almost started laughing during his very serious, tragic moment. We haven't used the time out chair for Jacob for several years. Greg gave me a "What's that about?" look and I had him join me in the bedroom to talk. I was leaning toward not punishing him at all because he was already truly sorry. Greg pointed out that we can't just overlook lying. Sigh. Sometimes trying to be a good parent is very difficult.

When I went back to Jacob in time out, he was crying quietly (Way to go, Jake... Rip mom's heart into shreds).

Me: Jake, you are such a good kid. You are a good person. You care so much about people and you want to help everyone, and I think that's wonderful. I'm happy that you wanted to give your money to another family. But you can't lie to help people.

Jake: (sniffling) I know. I'm sorry.

Me: What do you think I should do?

Jake: You should punish me! (still sniffling)

Me: Well, what do you think would be fair?

Jake: No video games for two weeks! (And then he started to cry again... he LOVES video games and he only gets to play them on weekends.)

Me: Well, let's just do one week and then we'll talk a little more about not lying.

Fast forward to the next day. When I picked Jacob up from school, I asked him how his day had been.

Jake: Great!

Me: Really! Why?

Jake: Well, I told Ms. Catherine I was sorry for lying and I feel SO much better!

He may be prone to to whining, he may be a bit bossy at times, and he has many other flaws just like the rest of us, but this boy has such a good heart. He is such a good, good person and I am so proud to be his mother.

Our Chicago Adventure aka The One With the Missing Backpack

2012-02-26T19:41:00.000-05:00

Last weekend we surprised the kids with a trip to Chicago. Actually, it was all Greg's idea and he was initially going to surprise me as well before deciding it was too difficult to prevent me from making plans for the weekend (true). The kids each got to make one guess each night for the week leading up to the trip. The guesses ranged from "Florida" to "George Bob and Papa's hotel" to "skocket." (The last one was Benjamin's... several of his guesses weren't real words.)

To make this trip even cooler, we decided to ride the train instead of driving. Trains score major cool points. The downside is that the train to Chicago leaves at 5:45 a.m. and the train back from Chicago arrives at 11:50 p.m. So..... Saturday morning, I woke up at 3:45 a.m. so I could shower before we left the house at 4:30 a.m. Benjamin had gotten to sleep VERY late Friday night (excitement will do that!). We assumed he'd sleep on the train ride there. Um, no.

So, we started our trip with a very tired, cranky 3-year-old. Oh, and hungry. We had snacks with us on the train, but nothing very satisfying -- cookies, chips, etc. Sugar, carbs.

Our first stop was the Shedd Aquarium. We took a bus there and discovered the line was pretty long even right after getting there an hour after opening. It was in the 30s. We decided to wait it out, not knowing it would be 3 HOURS before we actually made it into the exhibit areas. During those 3 hours, the kids waited patiently for a while, but then hunger and boredom took over. We did get them each a hot dog from a snack stand nearby. Benjamin entertained the college-aged people behind us, dancing to music from a phone and making monster faces at them. At one point he and Jacob were chasing each other around Greg and Benjamin did a face plant into the concrete.

Once inside, I think Jacob could have spent weeks in there observing and learning. Benjamin had other ideas. Plus, it was so crowded (we later found it was a free day to Illinois residents... eek!). So, we wandered around for a bit and then decided to go get food.

Exhausted, we checked into our hotel. It was very nice, and the front desk person assured us the hotel restaurant was casual and suitable for small children. Luckily, we were there at 5 p.m., because it definitely didn't have a "small children" vibe. The food was very good, Benjamin was getting antsy and he has no problem with causing a scene in a public place, so we high-tailed it out of there without dessert.

Once settled in our hotel room, we spent some time enjoying the view. We spent a little time in the hotel pool, which was quite crowded, and then went back to our room and ordered dessert from room service.

The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast buffet. There were kids running around and everything was very casual, so that was much easier with Benjamin.

Bellies full, we went to the Willis Tower. Once there, they said it would be a 2.5 hour wait. We asked the kids if they still wanted to do it, and they did. A very nice co-worker gave me City Pass coupons leftover from her family's visit to Chicago, so we had two adult and 1 child pass to the Tower. We went to the regular line because we had to buy a ticket for Benjamin. An employee there saw our City Passes and said we could go to the express line. I said we still needed to buy a ticket for Benjamin. He asked how old he was, and even though it says only children 2 and under are free, he said to go on. This probably saved us two hours in line, and Benjamin was free! Woo hoo! It still ended up taking us about an hour to get up to the Sky Deck, but so much better than what we initially expected.

The downside to it was that they packed people into the elevators. We had to take 3 elevators to get up to the top and 3 down. It was so tight I couldn't pick Benjamin up with everything else I was carrying, and he thought he was going to be crushed (he wasn't, but it was definitely crowded). On one elevator, Jacob was close enough to put his arms around Benjamin. It was so adorable. I could see Benjamin visibly relax when he saw Jacob. On the way down, he had had enough and just started screaming. Luckily, I was able to pick him up then. He later told me (lower lip stuck out) that on the elevators he looked and looked but just couldn't find us and that we'd left him. I said we had been right next time him and tried explaining that he just couldn't see our faces, but he didn't believe me.

Afterwards, we had some time to kill, so we hopped on a bus again. At some point we realized we no longer had Benjamin's Thomas backpack with his monster hat, the trip home travel snacks, and their Willis Tower lollipops. Thank goodness Piggy was not in there. Jacob had been the one carrying the backpack, and he was devastated. Benjamin started wailing a sad, low cry. We decided to give finding it our best shot. We tracked down the bus we had been on, thinking we'd left it in the back. The bus driver was very nice and remembered us. She said she didn't think we'd had the backpack with us when we got on, but said we could go look. I went to the back of the bus and asked if anyone had a Thomas backpack under his or her seat. There was a collective, "Awwwww...." but no backpack. We then realized it had probably been left at the bus stop. We took a bus back to that spot and didn't see anything there. At that point, we decided it was probably gone for good. Benjamin kept asking, "Why did someone steal it?" I said maybe someone who didn't have food was able to get some food. He was still pretty sad and any time anyone looked at him, he would sadly say, "I lost my backpack."

The train ride home was much easier than the train ride there. The kids both slept for part of it. I had some lovely Kindle time. A wonderful trip, but so incredibly exhausting.

My Boys Are Silly

2012-02-05T23:11:00.000-05:00

My kids crack me up. Benjamin is a little clown. Half an hour before bedtime, he said to Greg, "But you said I could wear my overalls today." So, he made the most of his overalls time... even better without a shirt, right? And after being inspired by the drumline on the Super Bowl halftime show, he got out his drum and hooked it to the front of the overalls.

Yesterday Benjamin spent a good chunk of the day helping Greg in the garage. Greg's building shelves for our toy room. Benjamin LOVES helping out and got to help sand.

Jacob isn't into handiwork or anything like that. He prefers video games. A lot. We have to cut him off.

This is his preferred face for photos (below).

I realized it had been a while since I'd taken any photos of them.

They decided we should take some together.

It was hard to get a group shot so we decided to try it while lying on our backs on the floor.

This inevitably leads to silliness.

So when Jacob is overdramatic about everything from Benjamin destroying his Lego creations (somewhat valid) to not having his favorite yogurt flavor available (ridiculous), and when Benjamin repeatedly gets notes home from daycare about throwing rocks/forks/etc. or biting/hitting/etc., I will look at these photos. I will take a deep breath and remember that most of the time, they are sweet and precious little angels.

Playing Catch Up

2012-01-18T15:28:00.001-05:00

So 2011 kind of flew past me. I didn't really blog, I didn't take as many photos, and I didn't document as much of the special moments with the kiddos as I would have liked... So, in big mish-mash style, here are a bunch of photos, Facebook updates, and random "jottings."

FACEBOOK

2/6/2011 Jacob: Daddy washed all of those dishes.
Me: No, I did some of those.
Jacob: Well, I thought Daddy did most of those.
Me: Well, Daddy might have done a few, but Mommy did most of these.
Jacob: You're talking in the third language.
Hee hee.
And he just corrected it to: My friend, who's not really a friend, Malachi, talks in the third person language.
What kind of 6-year-old talks about third person?

2/22/2011 So tonight I asked Jacob about Lindsay, his girlfriend, and what all of that means. He wasn't sure how to explain it at first, but finally said, "It's just, well, she seems so special to me."

3/6/2011 Yesterday I while I was in the shower, Jacob decided to help Benjamin use the potty. This is what I heard:
Benjamin: Wah! I just went pee pee in my mouth!
Jacob: Well, that's because you weren't holding down your weiner!
SO wrong.

4/2/2011 I am in a REALLY good mood. Completely in love with Butler and especially enjoyed singing the Butler War Song with Greg and the boys when they won! Woo hoo! :) Benjamin might not know all of the words yet, but he got a few and made up for the ones he missed with happy dancing.

5/8/2011 Jacob just gave me a card he made and a bag of pine cones he found at school. Benjamin said he also had presents for me and brought me a reading book, a drum stick, and the trailer from a toy truck. I said that was probably enough presents. He said, "Yeah, you can have the rest at Christmas." Hee hee. I love my boys. :)

5/14/2011 During lunch today, Greg opened the blinds in the kitchen to let in some sunshine. Jacob said, "Oh, so we don't need this anymore" and turned off the kitchen light.

Benjamin's whole body crumbled and he started sobbing, "I can't see! I can't see!"

5/14/2011 Jacob, on showering before his girlfriend Lindsay's Birthday party: "I'm going to use conditioner today because it's Lindsay's birthday!"

5/15/2011 Benjamin, looking at the mousepad: "Oh, is that a mouse coaster?" :) Love it!

6/24/2011 Benjamin charmed the socks off of about 50 different people at the grocery store tonight. He smiled at anyone within a few feet and said, "Hiya! I'm making friends!" and would then chat about anything that came to his sweet little mind.

6/29/2011 Wisdom from Benjamin: "People don't like to smell feet."

7/1/2011 We had a VERY random dinner tonight: PB&J on hotdog buns, blueberries, roasted broccoli and cauliflower, crackers broiled with cheese and bacon bits, and banana chocolate cake (end of the week, just grabbing whatever out of the fridge!). Jacob Stone said, "It's like a George Bob (Jane Thornquist Bogetto) meal, only hers don't usually have vegetables." Ha ha. :)

7/6/2011 ‎Benjamin Stone: I didn't get a snack. Me: Yes, you did. Where did it go? Benjamin: I lost it. Me: Where did you lose it? Benjamin: In my mouth.

7/21/2011 Tonight Benjamin Stone told us he wants to be a fire engine when he grows up.

7/24/2011 On Friday we were listening to music and Jacob said, "I think that's a timpani." Greg said, "It does sound like it. Where did you learn that?" Jacob replied, "I taught myself. I teach myself most things. Well, except for things about the world. I learn that in school." He taught himself to ride a bike, pretty much taught himself how to swim, and has so much random knowledge in his little head... he may be right.

8/1/2011 Jacob just brought me something he thought was hilarious... a typo in his Book of Trivia Questions and Answers. My sweet baby makes me proud. :)

8/5/2011 At the Indians game. Jacob cheered through the whole thing. He is completely in love with baseball. On this hot, muggy night, he did note that it "smells like old socks." Ha ha. So true.

8/7/2011 ‎Benjamin Stone, on the VERY brief rain shower just now: "You can actually hear it sparkling outside. Sparkling is rain."

8/8/2011 Jacob, on a (tiny) spider building a web under his desk: "It already built the spider web and now it's probably gone out to mate." What???

8/9/2011 A little nervous about Jacob's first day in "real" school... It seems like I'm going to forget something. And... today Benjamin went to Time Out, misbehaved in Time Out, and had to go to the main office. Wow.

8/12/2011 Jacob, in one breath: "Goodnight, Mommy. Did you know the oar fish can be as long as five canoes?"

8/13/2011 I can buy Jacob's love with breakfast food. Jacob, as I'm flipping a piece of French toast: "Ooo, French toast! (pause) I love you, Mommy." *Hug* It's way too easy.

8/15/2011 Benjamin, at Jacob's baseball game: "Is the construction site open?" (He meant concession stand.) And, while talking about his babysitter: "Becca has bracelets in her mouth. Do only girls have that?"

8/19/2011 Jacob: "Those are crickets. Probably trying to find a mate." Me: "Did you read that in your bug book?" Jacob: "No, I just knew it." Me: "Well, you have to learn it somewhere." Jacob: "No, I just told myself. I do that. A lot. I don't know why. I guess my brain is silly."

8/21/2011 Benjamin is wandering around the house singing bits of "Half Crazy" by Jukebox the Ghost. It's also one of Jacob's favorites (he sings it start to finish, including the instrumental parts - hilarious). My boys are awesome! :)

9/18/2011 For an early celebration, I bought my chocolate-loving son a DQ ice cream cake. I offered leftovers as a snack. "Well, Mom, it's mostly vanilla ice cream." "Oh, so you didn't really like it?" (He hadn't said a word while eating it.) "Not, really. (pause) But I'm still very thankful for it." Some days, he is so incredibly sweet! :)

10/20/2011 Tonight, in exchange for a new movie ($7.99), Jacob promised to not cry, complain, or pout for one YEAR. We shook on it. I love entering into agreements with 7-year-olds.

10/23/2011 While watching the pumpkin-eating dinosaur at Waterman's, Jacob said, "I thought dinosaurs were carnivores!" I laughed and said, "You're silly, Jake." He said, "I know. I was joking because I KNOW dinosaurs were carnivores." Ha ha.

10/29/2011 The Toys R Us big catalog came recently. Jacob wants a huge Lego set from Santa. I asked Benjamin what he thought he'd want. He replied, "I'll just like whatever he gives me." I think it's pretty true. He's a pretty laid back little guy. :)

10/29/2011 Benjamin doesn't think I can keep him safe in his room because I'm not 33 (like Greg). I said, "Don't you want me to stay in here with you?" He said, "Well, do you want to?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Well, but... sometimes I get scared with people who are only 32."

11/5/2011 Benjamin: What is Easter? Greg: It's when Jesus rose from the dead. Benjamin: And dropped chocolate on the ground?

11/11/2011 Jacob, on the way home: "What does gross mean?" I asked where he'd seen it. "On a sign that says, '11,000 lb gross limit.'" I explained that it was a weight limit for how much total could be on the bridge at the time. He said, "So that means it can only hold five and a half tons?"

11/14/2011 Tonight Jacob chose an apple for his bedtime snack. He said it was because it's "delicious, good for you, and only has natural sugars." He is such a funny and wonderful kid!

11/26/2011 Benjamin told me he's going to get us "grown-up stuff" for Christmas: computers, phones, and gum. :)

12/12/2011 thoroughly enjoyed the car ride home... Jacob suggested taking turns choosing Christmas carols to sing. For his turn, Benjamin said we should all just laugh. He started with an over-the-top fake laugh, which ended with the four of us laughing pretty hard. :)

12/26/2011 On Saturday night, Greg Stone was putting Benjamin Stone to bed, and Benjamin asked what the garage door noise was (at my parents' house). Greg said it was Uncle Ben going out to see some friends. Benjamin said, "But he forgot to take me! I wanted to go to the party with him. I was going to be his wingman."

11/21/2011 Email from Greg: Last night when I was putting the kids to bed, I asked Benjamin what he was going to ask Santa for. He said, “A tuba – the kind you wear.”

Little Guy on the Field

2011-08-21T22:23:00.000-04:00

This past spring was Jacob's first time playing baseball. He'd played soccer the year before. He liked it, got into it, and had a pretty good time. Then he started baseball, and from the very first practice, you could see that he LOVES it. He is passionate about it and he loves every second of each practice and each game.

In the spring, he played on a team with 4- to 6-year-olds. He was one of the tallest kids on his team, and no one had been playing for very long. While he wasn't the strongest on the team at batting, throwing, or catching, he wasn't the worst, and... he really stood out for his running. He is fast (it doesn't come from me!) and his head is in the game. He knows where to throw the ball, even if his arm doesn't get the ball where he's aiming. When covering first, he once got three batters out in a row by running past the kid running to first, grabbing the ball, and then beating the kid back to base. Fast.

This fall, he's playing on a team with what we're guessing to be 6- to 8-year-olds. He's one of the babies. The kids on his team are impressive. They are tall and some of them look like 10-year-olds to me. They can throw, they can catch, and they know what they're doing. They have weight behind them to actually hit home runs. And they don't have the patience to indulge a sweet little boy who's still trying to get the hang of things.

At today's game, Jacob struck out each time he was at bat. As a great improvement from his first few games in the spring, he no longer makes a dramatic exit with a very slow, drawn out walk off the field, but you can definitely see a slight slump of the shoulders and the disappointment on his face. Shame, even though I wish he wouldn't feel that way.

When they first came out onto the field, the older kids on his team were throwing the ball back and forth as players do. Jacob kept putting up his glove and saying, "Here! Throw to me!" and they ignored him. Again, a slight slump of the shoulders, but he didn't whine or complain, which is a big accomplishment for him on some days. This is what is hard for me. I wanted to go out on to the field and tell those boys to be nice. I wanted to tell them they have to take turns and they have to include everyone. I wanted to see my baby happy and smiling on the field. But that isn't how it works in sports (from what I hear, not that I've ever actually participated). He has to take it, deal with it, and get over it.

I worry that playing with kids who are so much better will crush his excitement. I have never enjoyed doing things when I'm not one of the best. That's usually my signal to quit. I see those traits in Jacob at times, and I hope his love of baseball will overcome them. We talked on the way home about how the other kids are older and have been playing longer, and how they weren't as good as they are now when they were his age. We talked about how he'll be able to do a lot more in a couple of years when he's bigger. He seems to accept this for now. Fingers crossed that it will keep him going until his body catches up to his brain!

I took the summer off and Jacob's first day of school....

2011-08-11T19:29:00.000-04:00

So apparently I took the summer off. It wasn't intentional, but things just got busy. Really busy. And it's not that they've gotten slower, it's just that I feel I'd be failing as a parent if I didn't document Jake's first day of 1st grade....

Yesterday Jacob had his first day. We were so nervous about it, but Jacob sailed on through. When I picked him up, he told me about breakfast, about lunch, and about snack at the after school program. And that's about it. Today, he told me about snack after school and what they're having tomorrow. Can you see what's important to him?

Yesterday I had his outfit picked out... plaid shorts because Jacob loves plaid and a white shirt so it was still match-y. I didn't think about socks, (stupidly) assuming he'd just choose white ones.

He managed to get a little "Jacob flair" in... I saw this after school.

And here's my other little stinker. He had frowny faces on his daily report THREE days in a row. One day he went to time out for throwing mulch at his teacher, and in time out, tried spitting at her, so he was sent to the main office. Nice. Today he finally came home without a frowny face. It's impossible to stay mad at this face. He entertained us at dinner by telling us the little song about a peanut on a railroad track turning into peanut butter. Super cute. :)

In other news, Jacob told me last night he's saving up for a metal detector to hunt for treasure so he can become rich. Ha ha. I asked if he planned to hunt for pirate treasure in Indiana. He said, "Um, no. I would have to go near the beach, somewhere like Florida." Duh, Mom.

My Amazing Little Guy

2011-06-12T14:52:00.000-04:00

We were at BD's Mongolian Grill last night (tasty!). Benjamin was being Benjamin. To be fair, it was late and they were tired, so it was to be expected. Benjamin kept saying he wanted to get a cherry cheesecake dessert. They were only $2, so we let him choose his own. He is a chocolate fiend, so we were pretty sure he wouldn't like it much. He didn't. Jacob chose to share a full-size dessert with Greg. A chocolatey, gooey mess of deliciousness. Benjamin wanted this, but only said so once Greg and Jacob were done with it. Benjamin then dropped his spoon on the floor. Our server was only somewhat competent, so it seemed like we'd be done before he brought a replacement spoon. Instead, I asked Jacob to go get a spoon from the soup/salad bar for Benjamin. It was, no surprise, a soup spoon. That doesn't work very well with a tall, skinny glass for ice cream sundaes. Benjamin didn't want to use anyone else's spoon. I cleaned Greg's off and offered it to him. Nope, he didn't want it. He didn't want the soup soon.

And then, Jacob came up with a brilliant idea. "Hey, I can take the spoon over there (the soup/salad bar area) and pretend to come back with it!"

Would it really work?

Jacob went off with the cleaned off tall spoon and took his time going to the soup/salad bar area. He came back and presented Benjamin with Greg's cleaned off tall spoon.

It worked like a charm.

Things They Say

5/17/2011:

Me (to Benjamin, while hugging him like crazy): You're my cuddle bug.
Benjamin: Yep. And your other cuddle bug is at the baseball game.

6/4/2011:
A storm was getting ready to start. Benjamin was nervous. I told him it would just bring rain to help the trees grow and that we'd be safe in the house. Benjamin didn't want to hear the thunder or see the lightning. I said our house was really safe during all of that. Jacob said, "So we probably wouldn't get hit by lightning?" I said no, because our house isn't very tall and we don't have anything around to attract it. Jacob said, "Right, because it would probably go to tall things like tall trees and tall buildings downtown." (pause) "Except it wouldn't hurt the tall buildings downtown because they have things on top that keep the lightning from hurting the building."
